Within the Master's course "Civil Engineering" at TU Darmstadt, a project has to be carried out. In the winter term 2018/2019 this was the design and fabrication of a bridge spanning 6 m and made entirely from paper. Students had to find bridge types suitable for the use of paper, develop and optimise cross sections and bracing systems and furthermore prove the load bearing capacity. This included the use of experimental methods explicitly. Finally, the bridge had to be erected crossing a small creek. No materials other than paper, cardboard and glue were allowed. Many key aspects of bridge design are governed by site-related, geometric, functional and constructional constraints. Economy is yet another decisive factor in public works, whilst enhanced sensitivity to aesthetics is driving the demand for more than merely utilitarian structures. Such exacting boundary conditions often spur careful or even innovative structural design. Since the successful translation of numerous constraints into a reliable, functional, cost-effective structure with aesthetic appeal is primarily a question of sound conceptual design, the importance of this step in the design process as a whole cannot be overstated. This paper summarises the more prominent aspects of conceptual bridge design, particularly in connection with meeting and duly balancing non-standardised economy- and aesthetics-related objectives. Taking the outcome of the conceptual design stage as a starting point, the paper also addresses the use of digital design tools for the development of other construction documents. By way of illustration, the ideas underlying the conceptual design for the Butarque footbridge in Leganés, Spain are discussed, in connection primarily with the specific boundary conditions but also with the actual layout, detailing and construction. The example shows that a modern, technologically advanced design may be compatible with a solution whose elegance meets the most exacting aesthetic standards. Sustainability, climate change issues and carbon emissions have recently become more prominent. To limit carbon emissions and reduce them we need to understand where and how much we use. The bridges and viaducts on major infrastructure projects have a high intensity of carbon compared to the average per kilometre. In this paper the carbon footprint of a range of current bridges and viaducts are outlined relative to cost, length, area, material and traffic type to give a benchmark for future reductions and to outline areas where improvements can be made. Engineers have often kept track of material quantities to estimate cost; the carbon content of a bridge can be calculated from the primary material quantities and construction methods. Information from a database of bridges is used in this research to estimate the capital carbon of 200 bridges. The data show the trends for different bridge loading types, materials and spans. The database can be used to assist with the reduction of carbon in bridges by benchmarking current carbon footprints. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the need for accurate and objective safety assessments of bridges in Brazil taking into account the increase in traffic load and limited funding for infrastructure. In Brazil, the usual method of ensuring bridge safety involves strengthening based on design codes using deterministic analysis and partial safety factors. This method leads to an increase in the maintenance cost of the bridges. Structural reliability assessment, a higher-tier assessment method, is recommended globally for assessing the safety of existing bridges beyond current deterministic methods. This paper presents a study that evaluates the structural safety of existing road bridges in Brazil using the semi-probabilistic method defined in Brazilian standards and the full probabilistic method. The study selected six case studies of existing reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges to evaluate their structural safety concerning current normative loads. The results suggest that the partial safety factors defined in the Brazilian standards are consistent with international standards. The reliability analysis can guarantee the bridges' safety, even with increased traffic loads, without additional costs for structural strengthening. Therefore, the paper highlights the importance of promoting reliability analysis in Brazil to ensure the safety of existing bridges and promote cost-effective and objective safety assessments. Fires are increasingly recognized as one of the major hazards causing damage to bridges and disruption in their operational continuity. As a transportation hub, cable-supported bridges are particularly critical to social sustainability and economic development. However, ensuring the resilience of cable-supported bridges in unexpected fire events has arisen as a challenge in recent years due to the lack of available standards and guidance for practitioners. In this context, this paper presents an up-to-date review of the fire resilience enhancement methods for cable-supported bridges and proposes research needs for impending decades. Representative fire incidents and the concerns of bridge managers are analyzed to define the critical fire scenarios that need to be considered in future fire-resistant designs. The fire performance of cable-supported bridges whose cables, girders, and pylons are exposed to fires are analyzed respectively. To enhance the fire resilience of cable-supported bridges, this paper compiles probabilistic methods, including fire risk evaluation and mitigation based on identified vulnerable bridges, and deterministic methods, including active and passive fire protection measures. This paper reveals that guidance on the fire resilience of cable-supported bridges should be further improved with regard to aspects including the fire performance of cable systems, the ability of cable-supported bridges to provide continued service in fires, risk- and cost–benefit-based fire resistance design, multi-level fire damage determination, and emergency response strategies. The following paper describes the designs and construction of the new stage structure and metal rigging of the National Theatre of Costa Rica (TNCR). The 125-year-old heritage building was subjected to renovations of the stage and rigging, interweaving a new structure that left the original iron and wood structure intact and respected a fully operational historical stage. The project was innovative because it maintained the original loom and added a dual-stage that supports larger loads in a new bolted metal structure while preserving the craft of the stagehand in the original theatre rigging system. There is a growing tendency to assess resilience and sustainability of critical infrastructures (CI), given the significant increment in high-impact natural hazard events affecting socio-economic welfare. Historically, these assessments have been conducted separately due to the independent evolution of each concept. However, recent contributions tend to integrate them. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review of integrated assessments for resilience and sustainability in CI, examining concepts, indicators, frameworks, and methodologies. Additionally, a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis was performed to gain further insights into the prospects of integrated assessments. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology, eligibility criteria were established, leading to the selection of twelve studies. These works were compared based on five dimensions (economic, environmental, social, technical, and governance) to highlight the differences in the indicators used. While all studies considered the social, environmental, and economic dimensions, some did not further analyze sufficient indicators to evaluate environmental and social effects, with governance often neglected. This study emphasizes the relevance of establishing common metrics for a convergent frame for the resilience and sustainability assessment. Modelling the cyclic response for the evaluation of the seismic capacity of existing corroded RC bridges is important as it is well recognised in literature. Procedures exist in the literature for the inclusion of corrosion effects through variation in different parameters like cross-sectional area of reinforcement, stress–strain behaviour, yield strength, ultimate strength and elastic modulus. In the present study, change in the inelastic buckling behaviour of reinforcement and variation in the core concrete damage characteristic under different levels of corrosion are also modelled in detail with OpenSees computational software. Modelling procedures for pristine and corroded bridge piers are validated by comparison of the cyclic response results and backbone curves obtained from analytical modelling with the experimental results reported in the literature. In this paper, the procedure for the cyclic response evaluation of piers for different mass loss percentages for corrosion has been demonstrated. From cyclic response results, the backbone curves for corroded bridge pier specimens are developed for different mass loss percentages of corrosion. The modelling strategy proposed in this paper for the cyclic response evaluation of bridge piers can be adopted for quantifying the effect of corrosion on the cyclic response of similar important structures. The Young Engineers Colloquium 2023 (YEC2023) was organized by the Belgian and Dutch National Groups of IABSE and took place at Ghent University in Belgium. The event provided a platform for young engineers under 35 years old to present their research, engineering, and construction projects to fellow engineers in the structural engineering sector. The Colloquium included oral and poster presentations, as well as a keynote lecture by Prof. José Campos e Matos. The event also featured a city walk and a technical excursion to visit bridges under construction and the Oosterweel tunnel project. Awards were given for the best paper and poster presentations. Conventional evaluation of the overall mechanical properties and ultimate flexural capacity of prestressed hollow core slabs after a fire exposure depends heavily on the inversion of fire scene temperature. To avoid this drawback, this paper presents a new methodology which combines a generalized regression neural network (GRNN) with conventional non-destructive testing technology. Thereby, a neural network model for predicting the material performance parameters after fire exposure is obtained based on conventional testing indices. A hollow core slab bridge is used as an example, and the applicability of the trained network model is confirmed using numerical simulation and a field failure test. Results show that the overall relative error of GRNN in predicting the key performance parameters of the bridge after fire exposure is less than 10%. Further, because of the good thermal inertia of the concrete, the relative error in predicting the material performance parameters of steel after a fire is less than 5%. Moreover, the ultimate flexural capacity of the prestressed hollow core slab after a fire can be accurately evaluated by feeding the material performance parameters predicted by GRNN neural network into the finite element (FE) model. Although the effect of nonuniform shrinkage on the time-dependent behavior of simply supported composite slabs has been extensively investigated, continuous composite slabs have not garnered enough attention. This paper aims to propose the routine design procedures for continuous composite slabs, including the hogging moment over the interior support and the mid-span deflection. Thus, the long-term test data on two-span continuous composite slabs provided by the authors and the related literature were collected to benchmark the current design methods in international specifications. The routine design procedures for calculating the long-term moment distribution and the mid-span deflection of two-span composite slabs were proposed considering the time-dependent range of hogging moment zones. Moreover, the effects of different shrinkage distributions and hogging moment ranges on the long-term performance of these slabs were further quantified. The results showed that the mid-span deflection and the hogging moment over the interior support increased significantly over time; both could not be accurately predicted using the typical design methods described in international specifications. The hogging moment declined by 28.0% when a uniform shrinkage profile was adopted for the design of composite slabs, and the mid-span deflection decreased by 15.0% when a constant range of the hogging moment zones was used. The design procedures proposed herein well described the long-term behavior of continuous composite slabs by accounting for the combined effects of the nonuniform shrinkage and time-dependent hogging moment range. This paper investigates the failure behavior of reinforced concrete beam - column joints (BCJs) strengthened with different schemes of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and the factors causing fracture. In the study, five reinforced concrete BCJ specimens having 1/1 geometric scale were tested under reversed-cyclic lateral loading. While one of them was used as a reference, the others were strengthened with CFRP. Damage development of the specimens was simultaneously monitored by the acoustic emission (AE) technique. Both the structural and AE data were combined to reveal the effects of CFRP strengthening schemes on the fracture pattern ana damage progress. Quantities, scales, levels, and locations of the damage show that the scale of the damage decreased with all strengthening procedures and that the strength and other mechanical properties improved. In addition, extending the strengthening material to the columns and beams contributed more to the structural behavior in terms of strength, energy dissipation capacity and rigidity as well as crack development. Although strengthening by wrapping only the beam and column extensions of the joint can give the desired performance in terms of load bearing capacity, it is not recommended owing to an increased risk of major shear cracks. This paper focuses on the shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with carbon–glass-fiber-reinforced polymer (C-GFRP) plates under different anchoring schemes. The study consisted of four reinforced specimens: specimen CS-1 with no reinforcement and three groups of reinforced specimens SR-1, SR-2 and SR-3. The studies used a four-point bending test to evaluate the reinforcement effect of mechanically anchoring C-GFRP plates. The results of the analysis of load–deflection, strain and bearing capacity indicated that a better reinforcement effect was observed with fiber-reinforced polymer. The test results suggested that the occurrence time of critical oblique cracks was delayed and the development speed of critical oblique cracks was limited by mechanically anchoring the C-GFRP plates. C-GFRP plates significantly increased the stiffness of the reinforced specimen and reflected the superiority of mechanical anchoring. The ultimate shear capacity of the mechanically anchored C-GFRP plates has been significantly improved. With a reasonable increase in the amount of C-GFRP plate, the shear resistance of the test beam became stronger. Compared with the CS-1 specimen without reinforcement, the yield load values of the reinforced specimens SR-1, SR-2 and SR-3 increased by 5.56%, 18.80% and 26.50%, respectively. The ultimate load of reinforced specimens SR-1, SR- 2 and SR-3 increased by 11.64%, 17.47% and 31.51%, respectively. The researchers deduced their theoretical calculation method from the bearing capacity of RC beams strengthened by anchoring with carbon–glass-fiber-reinforced polymer plates. In this paper, in addition to the linear analysis used for typical tunnels, nonlinear seismic analysis of a tunnel has been investigated using pseudo-static method and a damaged concrete behavior model introduced in ABAQUS® software. The simulations were carried out under three conditions, free field, ovaling and racking, at two hazardous earthquake levels according to an Operation Design Earthquake (ODE) and a Maximum Design Earthquake (MDE). Then, the structural capacity curve and the behavior factor for the final tunnel lining were obtained. In order to extend the studies as well as to verify the pseudo-static analyses, seven nonlinear dynamic analyses compatible with the site under MDE conditions have been performed. The results showed that the tunnel lining procedure created limited tensile cracks under compression. At the bottom corners of the tunnel structure, the resultant stresses in the tunnel lining under two earthquakes caused failure and created tensile cracks. Therefore, it was necessary to reinforce the lining at corners. Comparison between different nonlinear time history seismic analysis and pseudo-static methods indicated that the pseudo-static methods resulted in 10–30% less acceleration than the average results obtained from time history analysis. This paper discusses the unique replacement of three historical bridge spans across the Hracholusky dam in the Czech Republic. The erection of the bridge was performed using longitudinal launching of a new bridge structure onto the old one, connecting and rotating the structure around a longitudinal axis before removing the old span. The main cable is one of the essential components of the suspension bridge; accurate calculation of the main cable shape is crucial in constructing a suspension bridge. This paper solves the challenge of the main cable shape for a "short span" in a three-tower suspension bridge by the analytical method of the ideal bridge shape and empty cable shape of the main cable. Feng Chu suspension bridge Xiangyang is taken as a prototype. This paper discusses the main cable shape and anchor-span tension control method in the construction stage of the main cable analyzes the deflection and stress characteristics of the main tower in the hoisting stage of the stiffening beam. The influence of pushing the cable saddle on the main tower provides accurate control of the main cable shape. Design sag and span of the main cable were taken as the known quantities. The sectional catenary equation is used to deduce and iteratively calculate the completed bridge alignment. The completed bridge alignment was taken as the target, the iterative calculation method of main cable bridge alignment and empty cable alignment compiles the corresponding program with MATLAB software. The calculation values of the unstressed length of the main cable, the pre-deflection of the saddle, and the mid-span sag of the empty cable are compared with the design values. A novel method for the design of variable depth single span bridges having maximum depth at the ends and minimum depth at midspan has been presented in a previous paper by the author. This design is possible by "fixing" the ends to "lock-in" negative moments, so that the positive moments at midspan are greatly reduced, allowing a shallow section to be used. The negative moments are locked-in by having short end cantilevers with tie-downs (rock/soil anchors) at their ends. The present paper expands on this work by comparing the static behavior of haunched single span bridges to that of other well-known bridge types, notably: (1) inclined leg and V-frame bridges, (2) three span continuous bridges, and (3) deck tied arch bridges. It is shown that the behavior of haunched single span bridges with tie-downs is very much the same as these three other well-known types of bridges. These haunched single span bridges are intended to be used for long span river crossings or highway overpasses, where only a single span is required, and an aesthetically pleasing graceful shape is desired, and/or the vertical clearance below needs to be maximized. Fire hazards can cause severe and irrecoverable damage to reinforced concrete (RC) tunnel linings. Historically, major fire events have led to months of downtime and millions of dollars of losses owing to repair costs and affected operations. The potential threat to the serviceability of transportation networks emphasizes the need to establish a standardized and effective post-fire damage assessment method to guide repairs and restore functionality. This paper proposes a fire damage assessment framework for RC tunnel linings that integrates advanced modeling with visual inspections, non-destructive testing and material sampling. The framework quantifies fire damage to RC tunnel linings in terms of surface discoloration, crack width, concrete spalling, sectional temperatures, strength loss of materials and residual displacement. A damage classification system is proposed based on a collection of international guidelines and feedback from industry experts to map damage metrics and repair strategies. A case study, using data from recent experiments, is conducted to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework and the benefits of the information obtained from numerical modeling. This framework can also be integrated with risk-assessment methods to optimize the fire design of tunnels with associated active and/or passive fire protection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discloses an early performed study on the fire-resistance design framework for cable-stayed bridges, including (1) the identification of potential fire scenarios and the calculation of fire return periods, (2) computational fluid dynamics simulation of the fire environment and analytical models of flame dimensions, (3) coupling thermomechanical finite element simulation to capture the bridge response, and (4) the determination of fire prevention and protection measures. The framework was then utilized on a two-level steel cable-stayed bridge. The return periods of vehicle fires on the upper, lower, and two-level decks were 1.13, 1.88, and 0.71 years, respectively. Numerical results showed that the bridge could resist car, bus, and truck fires but not tanker fires. Regulative fire prevention measures were undertaken to suppress the fire risk on the bridge, and drainages were designed to exclude the accumulation of fuel leaks. Although the work was finished in 2007, the proposed framework can still be a prototype for designing cable-stayed bridges against fires nowadays. From the current view, the framework can be improved by incorporating traffic data to calculate the fire return periods, using more precise fire models developed for bridges, and quantifying the cost-benefit of employing fire prevention and protection measures. Aerodynamic stability and buffeting response due to turbulent wind have a fundamental importance for long-span bridge design. However, there are no benchmark cases that can be used as a reference estimate for an independent validation of the numerical methods and theoretical approximations. Therefore, the IABSE Task Group 3.1 proposal is to fill this gap by defining a reasonably well predicted set case for the response to wind of long-span bridges, both in terms of aerodynamic stability and buffeting. Specifically, a statistical analysis was performed on the numerical results collected by the task group participants, who used their own methodology and tools (either in time domain and/or frequency domain) to predict the bridge stability to flutter and buffeting response to wind, sharing the same input data (wind conditions, bridge structural properties, and deck aerodynamic coefficients). The benchmark results presented in this paper can be used as a point of reference for other numerical codes, and they include the onset of flutter speed, damping ratio variation with mean wind speed and the root mean square of the displacements as a function of mean wind speed, power spectral density values, and time histories of displacements. This paper explicates an efficient quantitative evaluation method to shed light on the structural safety status of Chinese traditional hall-style timber buildings and to provide a scientific basis for their proper conservation. Firstly, a reducing elastic modulus method for calculating the importance of the components in Chinese traditional timber buildings is developed based on the change rate of the overall strain energy per volume. Compared with the conventional deleting element method, the reducing elastic modulus method is more suitable for Chinese traditional timber buildings. Secondly, through an on-site investigation and structural analysis of a typical case, the main hall of Baoguo Temple, both the obvious damage and the hidden damage of the hall-style timber building are studied and evaluated. Finally, based on the modified analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method considering the component importance, this paper proposes a proper evaluation system, evaluation indexes and index weights of the structural safety status, leading to an efficient quantitative evaluation method for the structural safety status of traditional timber buildings. China's National Sliding Center will hold the bobsleigh, skeleton and luge events during the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. It is the first and only bobsleigh-luge-skeleton track in China; the only track set on a mountain's south face in the world and the Beijing Winter Olympics' project poses the greatest design and construction difficulties. The whole track measures nearly 2000 m in length with a structural system consisting of hyperboloid concrete shell with pendulum column. Along with specially shaped beams made of laminated wood, including 210 large single-sided cantilevers, a new-type wood-steel composite structure is used for the upper sunshade. The construction process of Longyan Bridge was constrained by the conditions at the construction site. At the site, the operation of multiple urban arteries (one river, two railways and two highways) cannot be interrupted. Additionally, this single-pylon asymmetric cable-stayed bridge is located in a karst area. To accelerate the construction of the bridge, a swivel construction method was adopted for minimal disturbance to the traffic and environment. It was decided to launch the steel box-girder through the cast-in-situ pylon without intersecting with the traffic lines and to rotate the asymmetric superstructure by 21° via a spherical swivel system. This method allows construction preparation and implementation in the most efficient way within the available time. This paper elaborates the swivel construction of the bridge where the swivel weight is heaviest (i.e. 2.36×107 kg) in a karst area. The design method for the spherical hinge is presented as an example and validated, in which a simplified method and engineering practice are integrated. Additionally, monitoring and control measures during the rotation process and weighing test are conducted to achieve the stability and safety of the construction. This article discusses the construction of a nodal bridge on Shanghai Rail Transit Line 10 above Line 6. Based on the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of various construction methods, a new type of asymmetric loading cantilever assembly method with a bridge erecting machine is proposed. Firstly, the east half of the bridge is constructed to form a T-shaped structure, and then the bridge erecting machine uses the built T-shaped structure to provide a fulcrum to pass the holes and complete the construction of the west half of the bridge. The two parts are then closed. The method proposed in this paper can solve construction issues when working space under a bridge is limited, and the conventional balanced cantilever assembly method cannot be used for construction. Industrial chimneys, launch vehicles and stacks are examples of large diameter circular cross section structures that can be prone to cross-wind vortex-induced vibration (VIV). VIV has been extensively studied for both fundamental and applied issues, but few documented studies concern high Reynolds number regimes (> 5 × 105) in atmospheric turbulent wind. This paper introduces a field test on a slender light and low damped chimney designed to experience "super-critical" VIV at moderate wind velocity. The chimney was recently erected in a wind monitored field, near the Atlantic coast of France. The purpose of this paper is to present the first vibration results obtained during a sequential 13-day period in September 2020. A statistical analysis has been performed on the amplitude and dominant frequency responses and results are reported in term of probability distribution as a function of wind speed and direction. VIV events of low (<15% of diameter) to moderate amplitude (>30% of diameter) have been highlighted in a range of wind velocity 25% lower than expected, along with significant influence of the wind direction – low turbulence easterly wind giving vortex-induced vibrations with the highest amplitude. This paper describes the principles, analysis and capacities of the axial-deck method developed in research on the optimization of the curved bridges directrices takin place at the UPM university in Madrid. The axial-deck method focuses on the two main structural challenges of curved cable-stayed bridges: the horizontal component of the load introduced by the stay cables on the deck; and the big torsion forces in the deck due to the unbalanced cable-stayed system. Hitherto, these problems have been addressed, either by optimizing the position of the tower and its geometric characteristics, or by modifying the morphology of the stay-cable system. Very little has been written about the possibilities of linking the structural behaviour to the deck directrix. This paper starts by describing the ideal solution equations, without considering the structure as statically indeterminate. Then, based on these equations, it follows the evolution of the method to a nonlinear iterative system. This evolution allows designs to be developed that consider the flexibility relation of all the structural systems involved in the problems. Finally, the method is validated with the redesign of two existing curved pedestrian bridges from prestigious engineering firms and the paper concludes with a structural behaviour analysis of all designs. Although engineers can analyse demanding structures, basic understanding of the structural behaviour is not always clear to them. This is particularly true with cable-stayed bridges having asymmetric spans and inclined or even curved towers. To improve this situation, the present paper with a new simple design approach method is introduced. The method is useful at the conceptual design stage, when only the geometry of the bridge and the approximate weight of the main span is known or easily estimated. No deeper-going computer analysis is needed, but knowledge of basic graphic statics is required. In the paper, analytic formulae are derived for the cable quantity and balancing loads needed. Only harp-type cable-stayed bridges are discussed. The approach is based on the so-called force–length method and curtain cables. The formulae are useful when comparing alternative bridge solutions, or when determining the back-span cable forces and balancing weights needed, especially with curved towers. Good bridge designers strive to balance their desire to build structures that serve their community, blend with the surrounding environment and are attractive to users, with financial and other project constraints. For long span bridges, commonly adopted types achieve good aesthetics just through the expression of a suitable, effective structural form. More than a century of achievements and advancements in the design of suspension, cable-stayed bridges, tied arches, trusses and other types of long span bridges do offer an array of possible solutions that, if developed with the right sensitivity and good attention to details, can bring lasting aesthetic value to the built environment. Although a "Form follows Function" approach does not always translate into good bridge aesthetics, that approach can be more challenging for short and medium span bridges, for which utilitarian structural schemes are more commonly adopted. The development of conceptual studies, good structural design and attention to detailing can achieve aesthetic results for these bridge types while meeting project financial constraints through a strong partnership with owners and the right attention to the needs of the community and the surrounding environment. The Vitruvius concept from "De Architectura" of 2050 years ago—a structure must exhibit the three qualities of firmitas, utilitas, venustas—still provides a good framework to develop simple criteria and aesthetics guidelines for bridge designers. This paper presents a range of examples, from concept studies to built projects, to highlight current challenges and possible accomplishments in the aesthetic design of highway and pedestrian bridges of short and medium span. The projects presented in this paper aim to highlight the challenges faced by designers when looking for possible solutions rather than to provide guidelines or describe accomplishments. The objective of a bridge design is to produce a safe bridge that satisfies all functional requirements with a cost that is acceptable by the owners. However, with accelerated development of people's aesthetic awareness, the design of urban bridges is gradually developing towards novelty, harmony, and customization. The most critical issue in constructing an aesthetically pleasing bridge is that there is no such rule to conceive of the most perfect or elegant design. In recent decades, a large number of bridges have been built on the Haihe River in Tianjin, China. This paper focuses on the introduction and implementation of innovative aesthetics design for urban bridges in this city. The design of new bridges on the Haihe River adheres to the people-oriented conception, and to the successful combination of aesthetics and functional design specifications. Complementary scientific strategies are implemented during the reconstruction of old bridges on the river to protect the cultural relics and preserve the history. The overall design conception in this paper is the harmony of mechanics and aesthetics as well as the harmony of bridges and its surrounding environment. Also, the designers and constructors follow the rules of inheriting historical emotions and human emotions. Several novel bridge cases are employed in the paper to demonstrate the design conception. Joints are the key factors that determine the construction difficulty and structural safety of prefabricated steel structures. However, the existing prefabricated joints of square steel tube and H-shaped steel beam frame have few reference forms, and there are still a series of problems in practical engineering applications, such as construction difficulties and poor applicability. Therefore, a new type of column-column-beam joint with variable beam height and its construction scheme are designed in this paper. The joint is bolted rather than welded in the process of field prefabricated. It can solve the problem of vertical and horizontal connection of steel frame structure through one joint at the same time, thus effectively saving construction cost and ensuring construction quality. In addition, the detailed modeling and comprehensive mechanical properties analysis of the joint scheme are carried out in this paper. The National Namaste Signature Bridge in Delhi symbolically welcomes the world with the Indian welcoming pose, Namaste, its visual form having the emblem of a peacock's feather on its main body. The very complex geometry of the 151 m high slanted steel pylon, meant to be twice the height of Qutub Minar supports a 575 m length deck having a cable-stayed span of 251 m, flanked by approach spans on either side of the main bridge. The steel composite deck integrated with the pylon is supported on spherical bearings having a capacity of 17,100 t, while eight backstays are anchored to specially designed pendulum bearings that can take an uplift of 6380 t, which in turn are anchored to a hybrid foundation of caissons and piles. The unprecedented nature of the design of the foundations, bearings and pylon called for ingenious and novel construction engineering and methodology to be evolved, whether for hybrid foundations, concrete technology, the erection of large capacity special type bearings, fabrication, trial assemblies, welding including very long and critical in situ welding of pylon base & finally segmental erection of three dimensionally varying pylon. In the paper while touching upon briefly the conception part of the other aspects like foundations, general arrangement etc., the detail deliberation on fabrication and segmental erection of three dimensionally varying pylon and steel girders has been made. This paper deals with the seismic assessment of an existing Maillart-arch-type bridge. The evaluations concern a still-in-use deck-stiffened concrete arch bridge, the Viadotto Olivieri (Salerno, South Italy): it's an r.c. deck-arch bridge having a permanent-to-live loads ratio of 6:1. The seismic characterization has been supported by various FEM models. Multiple accurate analyses have been necessary to exploit effectively the potentials of this structural scheme before evaluating any possible retrofit strategies. With this aim, different schemes were checked, changing deck configurations and restraints at the base. The bridge has been modeled in a realistic way, using shells and beams. A preliminary linear analysis has been performed that consisted of applying a total horizontal force equal to 10% of the bridge's permanent loads in both plan directions. This displayed the most vulnerable elements, which were later also confirmed by modal outputs. The response spectrum analysis, assuming the seismic parameters of the site, showed that the highest effects occur for translational local modes in which only a few macro-elements are involved (monolithic behavior). Fibers that are used to enhance the residual flexural and tensile strength of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) are reinforcing materials possessing good mechanical characteristics and properties. The effect of fiber on the flexural strength of FRC at elevated temperatures is limited and hence the present paper studies the influence of fibers (basalt, carbon, glass, polypropylene, polyvinyl alcohol) on strength grades M20, M30, M40 and M50 concrete specimens exposed to elevated temperature for a duration of 30, 60, 90 and 120 min, respectively, with an ISO 834 fire-curve. The objective of the study is to determine the effect of temperature on the flexural strength of fiber reinforced concrete prism and reinforced concrete beam specimens. Past studies have revealed that concrete's tensile strength is one of the primary factors affected by exposure to higher temperatures, more so than its compressive strength. The residual strength of the specimens was determined after cooling in air, and it was found that carbon fiber reinforced concrete specimens retained more residual flexural strength than the other specimens. The residual energy absorption capacity was analyzed and an empirical relationship was established to find the residual flexural strength in terms of the grade of concrete, the type of fiber and the duration of heating. This paper describes traditional strengthening methods and proposes new approaches for strengthening historical steel bridges with the use of modern materials. There is a discussion of known bridge-strengthening methods, and several new ways to strengthen bridges are proposed. The first section presents the history of steel bridges, and discusses structural materials and bridge design. Types of structures and decks used for railway and roadway traffic are mentioned. This section also describes how the materials were joined, and how they were assembled by riveting. The second section lists the flaws and defects that typically occur on historical steel bridges. Each defect is described with respect to its origin, its effect on the structure and possible consequences. This section also introduces the main points that should be investigated when inspecting a steel bridge. The third section discusses ways of strengthening steel bridges. Issues to consider when choosing the most suitable strengthening method are introduced. Traditional methods are presented, followed by modern strengthening methods. The benefits and drawbacks of each method are listed. Finally, new strengthening methods with the use of modern materials such as shape memory alloys, ultra high performance concrete and carbon-fibre-reinforced polymers are proposed. In a half-through or through arch bridge, the hangers (or suspenders) are considered as critical structural components, especially for dynamic performance assessment. This paper aims to study the dynamic impact of stiff hangers in an arch bridge caused by moving vehicles. An iterative algorithm is firstly proposed to solve the three-dimensional coupling vibration between the vehicle(s) and the large-scale bridge. In addition, the uncertainty of the computed strain-based dynamic amplification factor (DAF) due to measurement noise and the relationship between the DAF and local stiffness degeneration are investigated, respectively. After that, the influences of several parameters on the strain-based DAF of the hangers are studied by parametric analyses, including vehicle speed, road surface conditions, loading lane, vehicle spacing and vehicle model. The results show that the proposed iterative algorithm can accurately solve the refined three-dimensional coupled vibration system, and that the strain-based DAF is sensitive to measurement noise and changes of local stiffness. The shortest hanger suffers a more serious impact effect and a higher dynamic fatigue risk. The analysis results of this study could provide some useful and practical recommendations for the routine maintenance and traffic management of arch bridges with stiff hangers. This paper describes the design evolution and construction steps of Gravina (or "La Martella") Bridge, on S.S. 655 "Bradanica" Road, under the authority of the ANAS Department of Potenza, Italy. The final design of the bridge adopted the original solution for a "split" bowstring arch bridge first proposed by Arenas for Barqueta Bridge in 1992. Considering the cultural, historical and environmental heritage of the Gravina prestigious site, the bowstring arch type appeared to be perfectly in line with the contest of "La Martella" bridge. The bridge was re-designed later: the "as-built" solution shows some "adjustments" that were necessary to make bridge construction easier and to improve structural durability. To this end, although the original proportions were preserved, the original "split" arch was replaced by a couple of flanked and converging tubular arches, while a simpler composite deck was used instead of the original steel "boxed-reticular-open section". This paper highlights the nature of the problem related to tunnel liners exposed to fire, and presents a possible approach for assessing the static behaviour of concrete structures under this extreme loading condition. The paper starts with some comments regarding material parameters for concrete subjected to high temperatures proposed by the European Standards. Subsequently, the main aspects to be considered in a structural fire analysis for a tunnel are highlighted by means of a simple calculation scheme. Based on this scheme, an advanced calculation method for assessing the structural behaviour of concrete tunnel linings during a fire event is described and validated. The classic approach commonly used for structural static analyses based on thin elements (beam or shell) is not particularly suitable for determining section forces in concrete structures exposed to temperature changes. This limited adequacy emerges especially in the case of fire. In such cases, the impact of a temperature increase on the structural behaviour could be significantly overestimated. The proposed approach for tunnel fire verification, by properly considering the concrete cracking, provides more realistic results, avoiding unnecessary over-dimensioning of steel reinforcements in new structures, or the protection of existing structures by, for example, additional insulating layers. Human error is the major cause of structural collapse. Design review, together with execution control, is the most effective way to remove human errors from the building process and therefore most societies have procedures for design review and execution control installed. These systems work differently, e.g. preventive or repressive, and consequently affect the involved parties differently. In this paper, the effect of different design review and execution control systems on the acting engineer as an individual will be assessed by addressing human factors that influence design decisions. The paper will focus on the structural design engineer and the benefits of a well-tuned collaboration between the design engineer and the design review engineer, who also performs on-site inspections. The goal is to provide a better understanding of the impact of the design review and execution control procedure on the individual as well as on the development of the project. Human factors affect the design engineer subconsciously and influence the decision making in a significant way. Awareness of these factors and the corresponding influence due to the design review and execution control system will improve the design outcome and the relationship between the design engineer and design review engineer. Built in 1970, the Illzach bridge is located near Mulhouse in eastern France. It is a single 106 m span bridge carrying two traffic lanes, with two lateral steel trusses and an orthotropic slab with transverse cross-beams. After the detection of numerous cracks in the deck welds in 2009, a repair solution, based on the replacement of the asphalt layer by a thin slab of ultra-high-performance fibre-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC), with local connection to the orthotropic steel deck, was adopted. The strengthening technique, called Orthodalle®, was designed as a result of the Orthoplus national research project (2007–2011) and the works were performed during summer 2011. After introducing the bridge and its problems, this paper presents the design, implementation, monitoring and tests of this innovative repair solution. In the following parts, the paper describes the numerous monitoring and testing operations conducted during the 5 years after the repair, and the calculations made for the bridge. The newly-developed method of graphic stability is applied to Robert Maillart's iconic roof design at Chiasso. The truss has an unusual form that emerged from Maillart's graphic statics as the shape dual to the symmetrical equilibrium forces. Although graphic statics can lead to highly efficient structural forms, there can be a tendency for diagonal bracing to be minimised or even eliminated, as at Chiasso. Whilst equilibrium is satisfied, there may be a decrease in stability, and it has not previously been possible to quantify this within the traditional graphical approach. Using Chiasso as an example, this paper demonstrates how the prestress stability of this and similar truss structures may now be assessed within the same graphical setting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The changing climate with resulting more extreme weather events will likely impact infrastructure assets and services. This phenomenon can present direct threats to the assets as well as significant indirect effects for those relying on the services those assets deliver. Such threats are path-dependent and place-specific, as they strongly depend on current and future climate variability, location, asset design life, function and condition. One key question is how climate change is likely to increase both the probability and magnitude of extreme weather events under different scenarios of climate change. To address this issue, this paper investigates selected effects of climate change and their consequences on structural performance, in the context of evolving loading scenarios in three different continental regions: Europe, North America, and Asia. The aim is to investigate some main place-specific changes of the exposure in terms of intensity/frequency of extreme events as well as the associated challenges, considering some recent activities of members of the IABSE TG6.1. Climate change can significantly affect built infrastructure and the society by increasing the occurrence and magnitude of extreme events and increasing potential losses. The Yangsigang Yangtze River Bridge is a mega suspension bridge with a main span of 1700 m. It is double-decked with 12 lanes of motorway serving urban transportation. The bridge was opened to traffic in October 2019 and it has become a significant project case with high reference value, because of its pioneering characteristics such as being a double-decked structure with large span, having large diameter high-strength steel wires adopted for the main cables, having an all-welded structure adopted for large girder segments, being designed with innovative methods, etc. This paper introduces the innovations of the project from the perspectives of design and construction, as well as describe the advanced design concepts and practical technologies used for this truss girder suspension bridge. Recent earthquake events in New Zealand have highlighted the need to improve the post-earthquake reparability of buildings. This paper describes a number of avenues for improving the post-earthquake reparability of buildings and reviews a number of recent and ongoing efforts to improve post-earthquake reparability in New Zealand. Attention is given to the role that non-structural elements play in the reparability of buildings. The work explains how the design and detailing of non-structural elements can be enhanced to achieve improved reparability. To reduce the vulnerability of drift-sensitive non-structural elements, such as plasterboard partition walls, a number of alternative detailing strategies are under development. For acceleration-sensitive components such as ceilings and suspended piping, issues with the industry design, installation and inspection provisions are highlighted and ongoing research aimed at understanding system interaction effects is discussed. The last part of the paper proposes different ways of improving reparability during the conceptual design of a building. Various possibilities are identified, such as the definition of inspection and repair criteria and the relocation of non-structural elements away from structural locations to improve access to non-structural elements. It is concluded that by considering potential inspection and repair needs during concept design, considerable time and repair cost could be saved following intense earthquake shaking, with considerable socio-economic benefits for the community. Perry Bridge is a 130 m long network arch pedestrian bridge, which carries the Te Awa River Ride walk and cycleway over the Waikato River, in the central North Island of New Zealand. This paper gives an overview of the internationally award-winning design, from development of the concept based on network arch theory, to the numerical modelling and computational analysis required to verify the design concept, along with the design of a unique cableway launch method used to install the bridge across the river. The paper also demonstrates how the use of an efficient, cost effective structural form has resulted in a very elegant bridge solution that has presented the project client with the opportunity to create a visually compelling focal point to help attract people to the cycleway. Research on low-damage systems has been significant in recent years. These systems combine post-tensioning, which provides self-centring; and replaceable devices, which provide energy dissipation. Research by the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, on low-damage bridge piers has been used and developed into a real structure: the Wigram–Magdala Link Bridge. This is believed to be the first bridge in New Zealand, and possibly worldwide, to adopt such a system. This paper uses the Wigram–Magdala Link Bridge as a case study to describe the low-damage details adopted. The paper will then discuss the opportunities which exist for future incorporation of low-damage detailing on bridge structures. For example, the unique features of controlled damage, excellent post-damage performance and ease of repair offer the potential for a change in seismic design philosophy. The low-damage connections provide an opportunity to permit controlled and easily repairable damage to occur in a lower return period earthquake than currently allowed. The prefabricated industrial buildings, similar to the one presented in this paper, featured a high seismic vulnerability during the 2012 Emilia earthquake (Italy). The main structural deficiencies were a consequence of the lack of connection between columns, beams and roof elements. The case study presented in this paper is an industrial building composed of two structural units with different initial stiffness. The strengthening approach was different for the two parts. The stiffer part was equipped with Buckling Restrained Braced Frames (BRBF), thus adding stiffness and energy dissipation. The more flexible part was decoupled from the rest of the building and fluid viscous dampers were installed in the joint between the two structural units. The relative movement between the two parts can activate the damping devices, which dissipate part of the input seismic energy, hence a structural weakness is turned into a positive resource for energy dissipation. The bridges built by Toni Rüttimann and his local partners may seem technically simple, but working in remote locations and with limited resources complicates bridge building. Each country, each site, each design and each community has its own challenges. The aim of this paper is to shine a light on some of the technical and social complexities behind bridge building faced daily by Toni, his right-hand men, welders and the villagers. The aim is also to highlight the importance of all these people. The paper is based on a field visit to the welding yard in Yangon and the final assembly of two bridges in Myanmar in April 2019. Traffic patterns increasing and the degradation of existing roadway steel bridges due to poor maintenance has led to the need of an assessment deciding whether to retrofit or to supply a structure replacement. This paper focusses on the rehabilitation of steel truss bridges in order to extend the lifetime of such bridges. Two case studies are presented: the Adige Bridge, located between the provinces of Padua and Rovigo, and the Po Bridge, which connects the Rovigo and Ferrara provinces in northern Italy. In both cases, stress data and displacements are obtained by a 3D finite element model and the results show that loads defined in the European code are enough to compromise material strength in several sections. Appropriate retrofitting criteria are proposed and compared. A multi-criteria decision approach is introduced at the end of the paper to help in the decision-making process of selecting the best option for an additional reinforcement strategy, taking into account four criteria: reliability of the solution, ease of construction, estimated cost and embodied carbon. Grota-Roweckiego Bridge is the busiest bridge in Poland with average daily traffic over 185 000 vehicles in 2017. The 646-m long bridge with main spans of 120 m was built in 1977–1981. The paper presents the design and realisation of the rebuild done in 2013–2015. Modernisation involved widening of two independent decks with braced cantilevers by total of more than 9 m and strengthening the structure by external prestressing. The design included increasing the load capacity of the bridge by using over 100 straight prestressed tendons on each of two superstructures. Special attention was paid to the estimation of the remaining fatigue life of the orthotropic deck. The procedure according to JRC-ECCS recommendations was applied, including fatigue tests of selected parts of the existing deck. The paper also presents technological aspects such as methods of assembling of steel structure, prestressing of the bridge and order of works. Particular attention has been devoted to unexpected behaviour of the structure, that is vibrations of the deck cantilevers near dilatation joints and pot bearing damage during laying of the asphalt pavement.
