1. Performance Limiting Factors of 15-GHz Ku-Band FBARs

Abstract: We study the loss mechanisms limiting the performance of RF filters with epitaxial aluminum nitride (AlN) thin-film bulk acoustic wave resonators (FBARs) operating at the primary mode of 15 GHz. By measuring the dependence of the resonance frequency and quality factor over the temperature range of 79–400 K, we find that electrical loss in the metal electrodes is the primary limiting factor, followed by acoustic loss in the system as well as dielectric loss in the AlN. We model and discuss the measured intrinsic acoustic attenuation mechanisms in the epitaxial AlN layers. From the quantitative analysis of the temperature-dependent small-signal measurements of the filter RF metrics, we extract several temperature-dependent physical quantities, such as the longitudinal stiffness constant ${c}_{{33}}$ of epitaxial AlN, and its longitudinal acoustic phase velocity. A 1% change in the stiffness constant is found to introduce a 100-MHz shift in the resonance frequency. This study identifies roadblocks and provides guidelines for taking the performance of primary mode FBARs to 20 GHz and beyond.

Abstract: Summary: Rural surgery is most commonly provided by general surgeons to the 29% of people (7 million) living in rural Australia.The provision of rural general surgery to enable equitable and safe surgical care for rural Australians is a multifaceted issue concerning recruitment, training, retention, surgical procedures and surgical outcomes.Sustaining the rural general surgical workforce will be dependent upon growing an increased number of resident rural general surgeons, as well as changed models of care, with a need for ongoing review to track the outcomes of these changes.To increase recruitment, rural general surgical training must improve to be less stressful for trainees and to be incorporated alongside a rural‐facing generalist curriculum.Rural general surgical outcomes (excluding some oncology conditions) achieve comparable results to metropolitan centres.Access to, and outcomes of, surgical oncology services continues to be inequitable for rural Australians and should be a major focus for improved service delivery. 5. C-TYPE LECTIN-2D RECEPTOR CONTRIBUTES TO HISTONE-INDUCED VASCULAR BARRIER DYSFUNCTION DURING BURN INJURY

Abstract: Severe burns are associated with massive tissue destruction and cell death where nucleus histones and other damage-associated molecular patterns are released into the circulation and contribute to the pathogenesis of multiple-organ dysfunction. Currently, there is limited information regarding the pathophysiology of extracellular histones after burns, and the mechanisms underlying histone-induced vascular injury are not fully understood. In this study, by comparing the blood samples from healthy donors and burn patients, we confirmed that burn injury promoted the release of extracellular histones into the circulation, evidenced by increased plasma levels of histones correlating with injury severity. The direct effects of extracellular histones on human endothelial monolayers were examined, and the results showed that histones caused cell-cell adherens junction discontinuity and barrier dysfunction in a dose-related manner. Like burn patients, mice subjected to a scald burn covering 25% total body surface area also displayed significantly increased plasma histones. Intravital microscopic analysis of mouse mesenteric microcirculation indicated that treatment with a histone antibody greatly attenuated burn-induced plasma leakage in postcapillary venules, supporting the pathogenic role of extracellular histones in the development of microvascular barrier dysfunction during burns. At the molecular level, intrigued by the recent discovery of C-type lectin domain family 2 member D (Clec2d) as a novel receptor of histones, we tested its potential involvement in the histone interaction with endothelial cells. Indeed, we identified abundant expression of Clec2d in vascular endothelial cells. Further proximity ligation assay demonstrated a close association between extracellular histones and endothelial expressing Clec2d. Functionally, in vivoadministration of an anti-Clec2d antibody attenuated burn-induced plasma leakage across mesenteric microvessels. Consistently, Clec2d knockdown in endothelial cells partially inhibited histone-induced endothelial barrier dysfunction. Together, our data suggest that burn injury–induced increases in circulating histones contribute to microvascular leakage and endothelial barrier dysfunction via a mechanism involving the endothelial Clec2d receptor.

8. A unique subseafloor microbiosphere in the Mariana Trench driven by episodic sedimentation

Abstract: Hadal trenches are characterized by enhanced and infrequent high-rate episodic sedimentation events that likely introduce not only labile organic carbon and key nutrients but also new microbes that significantly alter the subseafloor microbiosphere. Currently, the role of high-rate episodic sedimentation in controlling the composition of the hadal subseafloor microbiosphere is unknown. Here, analyses of carbon isotope composition in a ~ 750 cm long sediment core from the Challenger Deep revealed noncontinuous deposition, with anomalous 14C ages likely caused by seismically driven mass transport and the funneling effect of trench geomorphology. Microbial community composition and diverse enzyme activities in the upper ~ 27 cm differed from those at lower depths, probably due to sudden sediment deposition and differences in redox condition and organic matter availability. At lower depths, microbial population numbers, and composition remained relatively constant, except at some discrete depths with altered enzyme activity and microbial phyla abundance, possibly due to additional sudden sedimentation events of different magnitude. Evidence is provided of a unique role for high-rate episodic sedimentation events in controlling the subsurface microbiosphere in Earth’s deepest ocean floor and highlight the need to perform thorough analysis over a large depth range to characterize hadal benthic populations. Such depositional processes are likely crucial in shaping deep-water geochemical environments and thereby the deep subseafloor biosphere.

9. Exploring the Role of a Large Language Model on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Management: An Observation Study of ChatGPT.

Abstract: Recently, large language models, such as ChatGPT, have emerged as promising tools to facilitate scientific research and health care management. The present study aimed to explore the extent of knowledge possessed by ChatGPT concerning carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), a compressive neuropathy that may lead to impaired hand function and that is frequently encountered in the field of hand surgery. Six questions pertaining to diagnosis and management of CTS were posed to ChatGPT. The responses were subsequently analyzed and evaluated based on their accuracy, coherence, and comprehensiveness. In addition, ChatGPT was requested to provide five high-level evidence references in support of its answers. A simulated doctor-patient consultation was also conducted to assess whether ChatGPT could offer safe medical advice. ChatGPT supplied clinically relevant information regarding CTS, although at a relatively superficial level. In the context of doctor-patient interaction, ChatGPT suggested a diagnostic pathway that deviated from the widely accepted clinical consensus on CTS diagnosis. Nevertheless, it incorporated differential diagnoses and valuable management options for CTS. Although ChatGPT demonstrated the ability to retain and recall information from previous patient conversations, it infrequently produced pertinent references, many of which were either nonexistent or incorrect. ChatGPT displayed the capability to deliver validated medical information on CTS to nonmedical individuals. However, the generation of nonexistent and inaccurate references by ChatGPT presents a challenge to academic integrity. To increase their utility in medicine and academia, large language models must go through specialized reputable data set training and validation from experts. Abstract: Although the exact prevalence of post-COVID-19 condition (also known as long COVID) is unknown, more than a third of patients with COVID-19 develop symptoms that persist for more than 3 months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. These sequelae are highly heterogeneous in nature and adversely affect multiple biological systems, although breathlessness is a frequently cited symptom. Specific pulmonary sequelae, including pulmonary fibrosis and thromboembolic disease, need careful assessment and might require particular investigations and treatments. COVID-19 outcomes in people with pre-existing respiratory conditions vary according to the nature and severity of the respiratory disease and how well it is controlled. 11. The effect of chemotherapy on the complication rates of breast reconstruction: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Abstract: The impact of chemotherapy on complications following breast reconstruction surgery (BRS) is currently inconclusive. This meta-analysis investigates the impact of chemotherapy on complication rates in BRS. Preferred Reporting in Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines was used to search relevant studies published from January 2006 to March 2022. The complication rates of neoadjuvant systemic therapy (NST) and adjuvant systemic therapy (AST) were analyzed via RevMan software 5.4, and a P value of< 0.05 was considered significant. The quality of selected studies was performed using the Newcastle–Ottawa scale for quality assessment. A total of 18 studies comprising 49,217 patients were included. There was no significant difference in the total complications rate, major complications, or minor complications between NST and BRS or control. The rate of wound dehiscence was higher in the NST group compared with the BRS only group [RR= 1.54, 95% CI, (1.08, 2.18), P = 0.02], and the rate of infection was lower in the NST group compared with the BRS only group, [RR= 0.75, 95% CI, (0.61, 0.94), P = 0.01]. No significant difference in the rates of hematoma, seroma, skin necrosis, and implant loss was detected between NST and AST, or NST with BRS only. No statistically significant differences in total complication rates were observed between flap and implant BRS types (P = 0.88). No significant differences between AST and NST were detected for complications. Significantly, NST had more wound dehiscence and less infection rates compared with BRS only groups, possibly reflecting selection bias or issues in the design of reported studies. Abstract: The effects of gaseous chlorine dioxide (ClO2) treatment, applied to inactivate Salmonella, on lipid oxidation, volatile compounds, and chlorate levels of dehulled almonds were evaluated during a 3 month accelerated storage at 39 °C. At treatment levels that yielded a 2.91 log reduction of Salmonella, ClO2promoted lipid oxidation as indicated by increased peroxide values, total acid number, conjugated dienes, and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances. Furthermore, several chlorine-containing volatile compounds including trichloromethane, 1-chloro-2-propanol, 1,1,1-trichloro-2-propanol, and 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol were identified in ClO2-treated samples. However, all the volatile chlorine-containing compounds decreased during the 3 months of storage. Chlorate (26.4 ± 5.1 μg/g) was found on the ClO2-treated samples. The amounts of non-ethanol alcohols, aldehydes, and carboxylic acids increased following ClO2treatments. Some volatiles such as 2,3-butanediol that were present in non-treated samples became non-detectable during post-ClO2treatment storage. Overall, our results demonstrated that gaseous ClO2treatment promoted lipid oxidation, generation of volatiles of lipid origin, and several chlorine-containing compounds.

18. A systematic review of systematic review methodology in plastic surgery journals.

Abstract: Systematic reviews (SR) and meta-analyses (MA) are described as the top level of evidence in clinical research and are commonplace in plastic surgery literature. Their quality is limited both by the reliability of primary studies and the method of aggregating data. This study analysed the overall quality of SR's in plastic surgery and identified influencing factors. The paper critically appraised SR's published in three prominent plastic surgery journals between July 2019 and July 2020. Study selection and appraisal was performed in duplicate. Articles were assessed using A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR). Seventy-six studies were included. 52 (68%) were SR's only and 24 (32%) included meta-analysis (MA) as well. The most common subspecialty areas included breast, craniofacial and hand. 78% of studies followed the PRISMA guidelines. The median (min, max) AMSTAR score was 3.5 (0–7). SR's with MA had significantly higher AMSTAR scores (p <0.001) than SR's alone, with median scores of 5 and 3 respectively. Papers from China had significantly higher AMSTAR scores than the USA. Craniofacial SR's had significantly higher scores than all other subspecialty areas. Most SR's reviewed concluded that there is currently inadequate primary research to make a conclusion and recommended more research be carried out in that area. This systematicreview found overall that the quality of research methodology in Plastic Surgery SRs is low, and their conclusions of limited value. 21. Properties for Thermally Conductive Interfaces with Wide Band Gap Materials

Abstract: The goal of this study is to determine how bulk vibrational properties and interfacial structure affect thermal transport at interfaces in wide band gap semiconductor systems. Time-domain thermoreflectance measurements of thermal conductance Gare reported for interfaces between nitride metals and group IV (diamond, SiC, Si, and Ge) and group III–V (AlN, GaN, and cubic BN) materials. Group IV and group III–V semiconductors have systematic differences in vibrational properties. Similarly, HfN and TiN are also vibrationally distinct from each other. Therefore, comparing Gof interfaces formed from these materials provides a systematic test of how vibrational similarity between two materials affects interfacial transport. For HfN interfaces, we observe conductances between 140 and 300 MW m–2K–1, whereas conductances between 200 and 800 MW m–2K–1are observed for TiN interfaces. TiN forms exceptionally conductive interfaces with GaN, AlN, and diamond, that is, G> 400 MW m–2K–1. Surprisingly, interfaces formed between vibrationally similar and dissimilar materials are similarly conductive. Thus, vibrational similarity between two materials is not a necessary requirement for high G. Instead, the time-domain thermoreflectance experiment (TDTR) data, an analysis of bulk vibrational properties, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) suggest that Gdepends on two other material properties, namely, the bulk phonon properties of the vibrationally softer of the two materials and the interfacial structure. To determine how Gdepends on interfacial structure, TDTR and TEM measurements were conducted on a series of TiN/AlN samples prepared in different ways. Interfacial disorder at a TiN/AlN interface adds a thermal resistance equivalent to ∼1 nm of amorphous material. Our findings improve fundamental understanding of what material properties are most important for thermally conductive interfaces. They also provide benchmarks for the thermal conductance of interfaces with wide band gap semiconductors.

Abstract: Introduction: Detection of a pulse is crucial to decision-making in the care of patients who are in cardiac arrest, however, the current standard of manual pulse palpation is unreliable. An emerging alternative is the use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for direct assessment of the carotid pulse. The primary objective of this study is to determine the interobserver reliability for physician interpretation of pre-recorded point-of-care ultrasound pulse-check clips for patients who are in cardiac arrest.Methods: We conducted a web-based survey of residents and physicians working in an academic center. Participants were shown a tutorial demonstrating POCUS detection of the carotid pulse and then asked to interpret 15 carotid pulse ultrasound clips from patients who were in cardiac arrest. The primary outcome was interobserver reliability for carotid pulse assessment. Secondary outcomes included interobserver reliability stratified by physician role and POCUS experience, median tutorial and median pulse assessment duration. Interobserver reliability was determined by Krippendorff's ⍺.Results: 68 participants completed the study, with a response rate of 75%. There was high interobserver reliability for pulse assessment amongst all study participants (⍺ = 0.874, 95% CI 0.869 to 0.879). All sub-groups had ⍺ greater than 0.8. Median tutorial duration was 35 s (IQR 29). Median pulse assessment duration was 6 s (IQR 5) with 76% of assessments completed within 10 s.Conclusion: Interpretation of the carotid pulse by POCUS showed high interobserver reliability. 24. Perfluorooctanoic Acid Transport in Soil and Absorption and Distribution in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa)

Abstract: Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is used as a surfactant in consumer and industrial products and is frequently found in biosolids from wastewater treatment plants. When present in biosolids applied to croplands, PFOA can contaminate feed and fodder used by livestock, but the extent of PFOA transfer from soil to plants is not well characterized. A single dose of radiocarbon (14C)–tagged PFOA was applied to unplanted soil or soil containing growing alfalfa. PFOA transport through unplanted soil and uptake by alfalfa was monitored over a 10-week study period. Radiocarbon was initially measured in roots, stems, and leaves 7 days after [14C]-PFOA application to soil. PFOA accumulation was greatest in leaves during the 10-week sampling. By week 10, PFOA migration through unplanted soil had reached a depth of 22.8±2.5 cm. In contrast, PFOA migrated to 7.5±2.5 cm in soil containing alfalfa plants. The greatest predictor of PFOA concentration in alfalfa leaves was PFOA concentration in the top 5 cm of soil; PFOA concentrations at lower depths were not correlated with alfalfa PFOA concentrations. PFOA transport through soil may be slowed by the presence of forage; however, PFOA accumulation in edible portions of forage plants may increase food animal exposure to PFOA residues.

25. Peritraumatic Plasma Omega-3 Fatty Acid Concentration Predicts Chronic Pain Severity Following Thermal Burn Injury

Abstract: Chronic pain is a significant comorbidity of burn injury affecting up to 60% of survivors. Currently, no treatments are available to prevent chronic pain after burn injury. Accumulating evidence suggests that omega-3 fatty acids (O3FAs) improve symptoms across a range of painful conditions. In this study, we evaluated whether low peritraumatic levels of O3FA predict greater pain severity during the year after burn injury. Burn survivors undergoing skin autograft were recruited from three participating burn centers. Plasma O3FA (n = 77) levels were assessed in the early aftermath of burn injury using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, and pain severity was assessed via the 0 to 10 numeric rating scale for 1 year following burn injury. Repeated-measures linear regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between peritraumatic O3FA concentrations and pain severity during the year following burn injury. Peritraumatic O3FA concentration and chronic pain severity were inversely related; lower levels of peritraumatic O3FAs predicted worse pain outcomes (β= −0.002, P= .020). Future studies are needed to evaluate biological mechanisms mediating this association and to assess the ability of O3FAs to prevent chronic pain following burn injury.

26. Point of care ultrasound training in Canadian emergency medicine residency programs

Abstract: Objectives: Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) has been endorsed as an important clinical tool by the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians (CAEP) and is a training objective of emergency medicine (EM) residency programs accredited by both the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). Our objectives are to describe the national state of POCUS training in RCPSC-EM and CFPC-EM residency programs and to evaluate the implementation of the CAEP core POCUS curriculum in these programs. Methods: This was an online survey study of all POCUS education leads for both RCPSC-EM and CFPC-EM programs. The survey queried participants on program demographics, description of POCUS training, methods of POCUS assessment, and implementation of the CAEP core POCUS curriculum. Results: The response rate was 100% (39/39). All RCPSC-EM and CFPC-EM programs provide POCUS training for their residents, and 100% of RCPSC-EM programs and 91% (20/22) of CFPC-EM programs have a POCUS lead. All programs provide POCUS training for their residents, but there is variability in how POCUS is introduced to residents, ongoing POCUS instruction provided throughout residency, and POCUS assessment. Only 47% (8/17) of RCPSC-EM and 32% (7/22) of CFPC-EM programs have a quality assurance process for the use of POCUS by their residents. POCUS leads believe their residents are proficient in the CAEP core POCUS applications by the end of training except for advanced cardiac and thoracic ultrasound. Conclusions: POCUS training in Canadian EM programs is prevalent, but there is variability in support for POCUS leads, delivery of training, determination of proficiency, and presence of quality assurance. While almost all programs deliver POCUS education aligning with the CAEP core POCUS curriculum position statement, more support is required both locally and nationally for sharing best practices for POCUS education.

Abstract: American foulbrood disease (AFB) is an economically important, reportable bacterial infection of honey bees (Apis mellifera)caused by the spore-forming pathogen Paenibacillus larvae.Currently, there are no viable measures for treating P. larvaeinfected hives other than incineration. The objective of this study was to determine the activity of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) gas against P. larvaespores. Sporicidal efficacy was dependent on treatment time and gas concentration with effective ClO2concentrations of 645 ng/ml for 30 min, 195 ng/ml for 1 h, 21 ng/ml for 2 h, or 16 ng/ml for 4 h. Treatment of surfaces with 230 ng/ml ClO2for one h or 195 ng/ml ClO2for 2 h completely inactivated P. larvaespores.

Abstract: ObjectiveTo define the incidence and risk factors for infective endocarditis (IE) following surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) and transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).MethodsAll patients who underwent first SAVR or TAVI in England between 2007 and 2016 were identified from the NICOR databases. Hospital admissions with a primary diagnosis of IE were identified by linkage with the NHS Hospital Episode Statistics database. Approval was obtained from the NHS Research Ethics Committee.Results2057 of 91 962 patients undergoing SAVR developed IE over a median follow-up of 53.9 months—an overall incidence of 4.81 [95% CI 4.61 to 5.03] per 1000 person-years. Correspondingly, 140 of 14 195 patients undergoing TAVI developed IE over a median follow-up of 24.5 months—an overall incidence of 3.57 [95% CI 3.00 to 4.21] per 1000 person-years. The cumulative incidence of IE at 60 months was higher after SAVR than after TAVI (2.4% [95% CI 2.3 to 2.5] vs 1.5% [95% CI 1.3 to 1.8], HR 1.60, p<0.001). Across the entire cohort, SAVR remained an independent predictor of IE after multivariable adjustment. Risk factors for IE included younger age, male sex, atrial fibrillation, and dialysis.ConclusionsIE is a rare complication of SAVR and TAVI. In our population, the incidence of IE was higher after SAVR than after TAVI.

Abstract: A global COVID‐19 pandemic, rising asthma and allergies, along with climate change impacting storm intensity and frequency, point to an urgent need to unify U.S. atmospheric biology research. To this end, we briefly define atmospheric biology, summarize its fragmented history, and then outline how to unify the field to provide benefits for the U.S. science community and its citizens. Atmospheric biology refers to the study of concentrations, sources, sinks, transformation, and impacts of airborne microorganisms inclusive of pollen, fungal spores, algae, lichens, bacteria, viruses, cellulose fibers, and other biomolecules or fragments of cells. Here our focus is biological particles, both respirable (PM10) and systemic (PM2.5). Due to its interdisciplinary dependencies and broadness of scales from nanometers to kilometers, atmospheric biology research is highly fragmented in the U.S. science community. It lacks shared paradigms and common vocabulary. This deficit calls for recognizing atmospheric biology as a research community in its own right, thereby linking human health to climate change. We need to recognize atmospheric biology's importance to national security and science diplomacy. 30. Peritraumatic Vitamin D Levels Predict Chronic Pain Severity and Contribute to Racial Differences in Pain Outcomes Following Major Thermal Burn Injury

Abstract: Major thermal burn injuries result in approximately 40,000 hospitalizations in the United States each year. Chronic pain affects up to 60% of burn survivors, and Black Americans have worse chronic pain outcomes than White Americans. Mechanisms of chronic pain pathogenesis after burn injury, and accounting for these racial differences, remain poorly understood. Due to socioeconomic disadvantage and differences in skin absorption, Black Americans have an increased prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency. We hypothesized that peritraumatic Vitamin D levels predict chronic pain outcomes after burn injury and contribute to racial differences in pain outcomes. Among burn survivors (n= 77, 52% White, 48% Black, 77% male), peritraumatic Vitamin D levels were more likely to be deficient in Blacks vs Whites (27/37 [73%] vs 14/40 [35%], P< .001). Peritraumatic Vitamin D levels were inversely associated with chronic post-burn pain outcomes across all burn injury survivors, including those who were and were not Vitamin D deficient, and accounted for approximately one-third of racial differences in post-burn pain outcome. Future studies are needed to evaluate potential mechanisms mediating the effect of Vitamin D on post-burn pain outcomes and the potential efficacy of Vitamin D in improving pain outcomes and reducing racial differences.

Abstract: COVID-19 vaccine supply shortages are causing concerns about compromised immunity in some countries as the interval between the first and second dose becomes longer. Conversely, countries with no supply constraints are considering administering a third dose. We assessed the persistence of immunogenicity after a single dose of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AZD1222), immunity after an extended interval (44–45 weeks) between the first and second dose, and response to a third dose as a booster given 28–38 weeks after the second dose.

Abstract: A unique field termination structure combining a three-step field plate with nitrogen ion implantation to enhance the reverse breakdown performance of Pt/β-Ga2O3Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) and NiO/β-Ga2O3heterojunction diodes (HJDs) is reported. The fabricated devices showed a low Ron,spof 6.2 mΩ cm2for SBDs and 6.8 mΩ cm2for HJDs. HJDs showed a 0.8 V turn-on voltage along with an ideality factor of 1.1 leading to a low effective on-resistance of 18 mΩ cm2. The devices also showed low reverse leakage current (<1 mA cm−2) and a breakdown voltage of ∼1.4 kV. These results offer an alternative, simpler route for fabricating high-performance kilovolt-class β-Ga2O3diodes.

35. One Russia, many worlds: balancing external homeland nationalism and internal ethnocultural diversity

Abstract: ABSTRACTFor many years, diversity management in post-Cold War Central and Eastern Europe was viewed through the prism of the multilateral minority rights “regime” developed through the OSCE, Council of Europe and EU. With all OSCE participating states asserting the importance of the concept during the early 1990s, minority rights were initially understood as a shared political field that could transcend rival nationalisms. This field, however, encompassed widely varying and competing definitions and was created in a context of unequal power relations between West and East. Russia – never wholly embedded within this concept of normative space – has increasingly challenged the multilateral framework rhetorically and in policy practice, as part of a more general shift toward instrumentalization of minority issues by “kin-state” actors within the region. Using new data from a 2014–17 project on practices of national-cultural autonomy (NCA) within Russia, this article demonstrates how today’s Russian state – hailing its own approach to diversity management as superior to that of the West – seeks to co-opt minority NCA bodies in Russia in the service of external policy and geopolitical competition. The article assesses how minorities respond to this strategy and the implications it might hold for ethnic relations within Russia.

Abstract: The ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AZD1222) vaccine has been approved for emergency use by the UK regulatory authority, Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency, with a regimen of two standard doses given with an interval of 4–12 weeks. The planned roll-out in the UK will involve vaccinating people in high-risk categories with their first dose immediately, and delivering the second dose 12 weeks later. Here, we provide both a further prespecified pooled analysis of trials of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 and exploratory analyses of the impact on immunogenicity and efficacy of extending the interval between priming and booster doses. In addition, we show the immunogenicity and protection afforded by the first dose, before a booster dose has been offered.

37. 161 The Effects of Feeding Hempseed Cake on Pancreatic and Intestinal Enzymatic Activity in Finishing Heifers

Abstract: Due to the unique nature of the rumen, unlike monogastric animals, ruminants like cattle largely depend on microbial hydrolysis of feed rather than post-ruminal enzymatic degradation. However, in ruminants fed high-grain diets, significant amounts of starch can bypass ruminal fermentation, where pancreatic and small intestinal enzymes play a vital role in digestion. Ruminal microbiota, as well as the host animal, require protein as a nitrogen source to optimize digestibility. Hempseed cake (containing >30% of crude protein) is a by-product of hempseed oil production, but currently is not used as a feed source as it is not an FDA-approved feed ingredient. Presently, the availability and costs of protein supplements are volatile, and sourcing alternative protein sources is needed. Therefore, information is necessary on the effect of feeding hempseed cake on ruminant digestive function. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of feeding hempseed cake on pancreatic and intestinal enzymatic activity in finishing heifers. Angus-crossbred finishing heifers (494 ± 10 kg BW) were fed for 111 days with one of two dietary treatments: 20% [dry matter (DM) basis] of dried corn distillers grains plus solubles (n = 16, control) or hempseed cake (n = 16, hemp). All animals were slaughtered at the end of treatment. Intestinal tissues for digestive enzyme assays were isolated and stored at -800C following immediate flash freezing with liquid nitrogen. The MIXED procedure in SAS was used to analyze the data. There was a tendency (P= 0.09) of greater pancreatic tissue mass in the hemp group than in the control group. The activity of pancreatic α-amylase, trypsin, and lipase relative to protein (U/g protein) was less (P< 0.01) in heifers fed hemp than in heifers fed distillers grains primarily because protein concentration (mg/g) and content (g/pancreas) were greater (P< 0.01) in the hemp group than the control group. However, there were no differences (P≥ 0.2) in digestive enzyme activity (U/g of tissue) in pancreatic and small intestinal tissues. Overall, our results suggest that there was no adverse effect of feeding hemp on the enzymes responsible for nutrient digestion in the small intestine and that hempseed cake may be useful as an alternative source of protein in cattle fed finishing diets.

Abstract: A safe and efficacious vaccine against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), if deployed with high coverage, could contribute to the control of the COVID-19 pandemic. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine in a pooled interim analysis of four trials.

Abstract: Older adults (aged ≥70 years) are at increased risk of severe disease and death if they develop COVID-19 and are therefore a priority for immunisation should an efficacious vaccine be developed. Immunogenicity of vaccines is often worse in older adults as a result of immunosenescence. We have reported the immunogenicity of a novel chimpanzee adenovirus-vectored vaccine, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (AZD1222), in young adults, and now describe the safety and immunogenicity of this vaccine in a wider range of participants, including adults aged 70 years and older.

Abstract: Fate and distribution studies were conducted with [36Cl]-chlorine dioxide in avocados, eggs, onions, and sweet potatoes. Experiments utilized sealed, darkened chambers, 5 mg of 36ClO2(g), and two-hour exposure periods. Total radioactive residues were quantitated in gas purges, tank rinses, reaction chambers, and on fractions specific to each food. Deposition of the radioactive residue was mostly a surface phenomenon; transfer of radioactivity into albumen occurred in egg, but radioactivity did not penetrate the onion tunic and only small amounts of activity were present in avocado flesh. Potato skin contained essentially all the potato radiochlorine. Regardless of the food product, nearly all radioactive residue was present in edible tissues as chloride ions; the chlorite ion was present only in egg-rinse water. Small amounts (10% or less) of radioactivity were present as chlorate ions, which would be a useful marker compound for chlorine dioxide sanitation.

Abstract: Bismuth selenide layers and nanowires have been grown by molecular beam epitaxy on self-assembled Stranski–Krastanov InAs quantum dots of different sizes and densities on GaAs substrates. The size and density of the InAs quantum dots were modified by changes in the growth rate and composition. The structure and growth habits of the Bi2Se3layers were studied by high-resolution X-ray diffraction, scanning probe microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and high-resolution electron microscopy. The epitaxial growth of continuous layers of (0001) Bi2Se3was observed over flat InAs surfaces. In contrast, the presence of InAs quantum dots induced the growth of 100 nm long and 20 nm wide Bi2Se3nanowires primarily oriented along the [01–1] and [0–1–1] directions. The nanowires coalesced into full layers when the growth proceeded further. A better understanding and control of the Bi2Se3growth habits over these surfaces should lead to novel nanostructures with enhanced physical properties.

47. Formation of Twin-Free Single Phase β-In2Se3Layers via Selenium Diffusion into InP(111)B Substrate

Abstract: Indium selenide, In2Se3, has recently attracted growing interest due to its remarkable properties, including room temperature ferroelectricity, outstanding photoresponsivity, and exotic in-plane ferroelectricity, which open up new regimes for next generation electronics. In2Se3also provides the important advantage of tuning the electrical properties of ultrathin layers with an external electrical and magnetic field, making it a potential platform to study novel two-dimensional physics. Yet, In2Se3has many different polymorphs, and it has been challenging to synthesize a single phase material, especially using scalable growth methods, as needed for technological applications. We recently reported the growth of twin-free ultrathin layers of In2Se3prepared by a diffusion driven molecular beam epitaxy approach, and twin-free Bi2Se3layers grown on these unique virtual substrates. In this paper, we use aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy to characterize the microstructure of these materials. We emphasize features of the In2Se3layer and In2Se3/InP interface which provide evidence for understanding the growth mechanism that leads to the twin-free and single phase In2Se3. We also show that this In2Se3layer provides an ideal substrate for growth of twin-free Bi2Se3with a nearly defect-free interface. This approach for growing high-quality twin-free single phase two-dimensional crystals using InP substrates is likely to be applicable to other technologically important materials.

48. Chemical Conversions within the Mo–Ga–C System: Layered Solids with Variable Ga Content

Abstract: Layered carbides are fascinating compounds due to their enormous structural and chemical diversity, as well as their potential to possess useful and tunable functional properties. Their preparation, however, is challenging and forces synthesis scientists to develop creative and innovative strategies to access high-quality materials. One unique compound among carbides is Mo2Ga2C. Its structure is related to the large and steadily growing family of 211 MAX phases that crystallize in a hexagonal structure (space group P63/mmc) with alternating layers of edge-sharing M6Xoctahedra and layers of the A-element. Mo2Ga2C also crystallizes in the same space group, with the difference that the A-element layer is occupied by two A-elements, here Ga, that sit right on top of each other (hence named “221” compound). Here, we propose that the Ga content in this compound is variable between 2:2, 2:1, and 2: ≤1 (and 2:0) Mo/Ga ratios. We demonstrate that one Ga layer can be selectively removed from Mo2Ga2C without jeopardizing the hexagonal P63/mmcstructure. This is realized by chemical treatment of the 221 phase Mo2Ga2C with a Lewis acid, leading to the “conventional” 211 MAX phase Mo2GaC. Upon further reaction with CuCl2, more Ga is removed and replaced with Cu (instead of fully exfoliating into the Ga-free Mo2CTxMXene), leading to Mo2Ga1–xCuxC still crystallizing with space group P63/mmc, however, with a significantly larger c-lattice parameter. Furthermore, 211 Mo2GaC can be reacted with Ga to recover the initial 221 Mo2Ga2C. All three reaction pathways have not been reported previously and are supported by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), electron microscopy, X-ray spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract: With nearly one-third of the UK’s total consumption of energy devoted to the domestic household sector, sustainable housing developments have an important part to play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to combat climate change. This study analyses a sustainable housing development in the city of Nottingham in the United Kingdom that takes the form not merely of a sustainable housing project, but rather an experiment in developing sustainable communities. In terms of green or eco-innovation, it incorporates innovations in housing design geared to curbing the demand for energy; technological innovations in energy supply centred on a novel community energy system; and innovations in the governance models employed. The scheme is notable for the novel public–private partnership carrying out the development, which specializes in developments characterized by an emphasis on quality urban design and a strong commitment to environmental sustainability.

Abstract: Traffic congestion at peak times has long been a problem facing cities in the United Kingdom.1Latterly concern about combating congestion has been hightened by worries over carbon emissions and poor air quality. In tackling these problems, green innovations incorporating new technologies appear to have much to offer, although progress in implementing these sorts of innovation appears to have been slow. This case study analyses the efforts of one city to tackle these problems by pioneering a number of green innovations including the introduction of a light rail system employing trams known as Nottingham Express Transit as well as electric and gas-powered buses. The nature of these innovations is explored together with a detailed examination of how they came to be implemented and the impact they have had.
