Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) in India was realized along the lines of Maoist ideology through the Naxalite insurgency in the 1960s. Novelists have attempted to grasp the mood of this decade of liberation through fiction. This article attempts to study two novels which document the formative years of the Naxalite movement in West Bengal. Translated works from Bengali, Mahasweta Devi's Mother of 1084 (1974) and Bani Basu's The Enemy Within (1991) foreground the necropolitical policies of the demonic state in eliminating these Naxal names. State and non-state actors obliterate the question of the Naxal's identity (enmeshed with his mind and body), making it the focal point of the analysis. Drawing abundantly on concepts of homo sacer, necropolitics, McCarthyism, and democide, the analysis demonstrates that the protagonists are typical of what modern biopolitical states do to non-conformist subjects by creating death worlds. At the center of American political and diplomatic life for four decades, Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. although an Episcopalian by faith, was a constant ally of powerful Catholic clergy in both America and the Vatican during the Great Depression, the Second World War, and the Cold War. His service as President Richard Nixon's special envoy to the Vatican during the papacy of Paul VI from 1970 to 1977 was the culmination of a long and fruitful collaboration with the Catholic Church, which was partially the product of political expediency and partly due to ideological and spiritual similarities. While there were failures as well as successes, Lodge's determination to cultivate leaders of the Catholic Church as allies revealed the growing importance of the Church in both the American political environment and in the tumultuous field of international diplomacy in the twentieth century marked by wars hot and cold. The article explores the interrelationship between the radical right in the post-World War II period of the U.S. during the 1950s and 1960s, taking into consideration anti-communism and McCarthyism, public campaigns to discredit political activists and politicians, and the public administration of metropolitan government. It focuses particularly on the National Municipal League (NML) and Public Administration Service (PAS), organizations established to promote good government and political reform of city governments.

When Jessica Mitford's The American Way of Death hit bookshelves, the American funeral industry reacted as if it had been nailed into one of its own gilded hardwood coffins. "She's a communist," they cried, "and a crackpot as well!" The industry launched a campaign reminiscent of the McCarthy era, attacking Mitford's credibility as well as that of her husband, attorney Robert Treuhaft, on grounds of their associations with the Communist Party. But the industry's ill-prepared spokesmen did little to discredit Mitford's devastating reporting, much of which quoted directly publications of the "dismal trade" itself. Piling on were the likes of ultra-conservatives California Congressman James B. Utt and Albert F. Canwell, a one-term Washington legislator who launched his own anti-Mitford campaign. Despite a flurry of efforts to discredit Mitford and her book, traditional news media generally reviewed the book positively and rejected the anti-Mitford charges. In part this was because it was a clumsy effort; more likely it was that news media, in the recent wake of the McCarthy hearings, were more cautious in embracing such claims. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
