1Two cases of drug-induced rhabdomyolysis, one of them presenting with acute myoglobinuric renal failure are described.2The pathogenesis of rhabdomyolysis and renal failure in our cases is discussed with reference to work published by other authors.3Whereas there seems to be obvious evidence for direct toxic drug-muscle interaction, the mechanism for the development of myoglobinuric renal failure remains unclear.

Electromagnetic generation of sound in the heavy fermion systems CeRu2Si2and UPt3is investigated. Two coupling mechanisms are identified: Grüneisen parameter coupling and Lorentz force coupling. The latter mechanism can be used to determine experimentally the skin effect penetration depth. Some special effects in UPt3are mentioned.

Depending on different Nb and Cu concentration, we studied the formation of nano- and microcrystalline phases in differently annealed samples of FeCuNbSiB. First, the kinetics of crystallization was explored by measuring the temperature-dependent electrical resistivity and magnetization. After this, we collected Mössbauer spectra and did an X-ray diffraction analysis of annealed samples at chosen temperatures to discover the different crystalline phases. It was found how the onset of crystallization had been shifted towards other temperatures. The analysis of Mössbauer spectra shows that building up the well-known DO3 structure of Fe3Si is disturbed in the alloy without Cu. At higher Nb content, we resolve two different crystallization steps in the formation of Fe3Si and a new crystalline phase, probably being a structure like Fe23B6.

The effects of thrombin and histamine on protein phosphorylation in intact cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) prelabeled with 32PO4were investigated. Incubation of HUVEC with either thrombin or histamine, agonists known to induce rapid transient increases in intracellular calcium levels in HUVEC, caused a rapid reversible increase in the phosphorylation of a protein with a Mr= 100,000 independent of the presence of extracellular calcium. Immunological and biochemical studies demonstrated that this Mr= 100,000 protein is elongation factor 2 (EF-2), a substrate previously shown to be phosphorylated by calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase III (Nairn, A. C., and Palfrey, H. C. (1987) J. Biol. Chem. 262, 17299–17303). EF-2 is crucial for protein synthesis because it catalyzes the translocation of peptidyl-tRNA on the ribosome. Phosphoamino acid analysis of the EF-2 immunoprecipitated from HUVEC revealed that all of the thrombin-stimulated phosphorylation occurred on threonine. EF-2 was also phosphorylated when HUVEC were treated with the calcium ionophore, ionomycin. Phosphorylation of EF-2 was not increased by treatment with D-Phe-Pro-Arg-chloromethyl ketone thrombin, phorbol dibutyrate, forskolin, or 8-bromo-cGMP. The transient nature of the phosphorylation of EF-2 is consistent with it having a role in mediating some of the transient effects of thrombin and histamine on endothelial cell protein synthesis and functional capabilities.

We present ultrasonic experiments of the c44-mode on the electronically highly correlated and antiferromagnetically ordering compound CeAl2 performed within a temperature range of 1.2 K ? T ? 30 K. In a certain temperature interval above TN we noted strong dispersive effects in the shear elastic constant coinciding with a high maximum of sound absorption which gives evidence for a phonon scattering process. The dispersive transition can be adequately treated by a Landau-Khalatnikov ansatz and gives evidence for a long lived magnetic excitation in the paramagnetic phase.

Cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) stimulated with thrombin are known to synthesize prostacyclin at least in part from arachidonate released by phospholipase A2, an enzyme directly activated by calcium. In this study, thrombin stimulation of Quin 2-loaded HUVEC caused rapid and dose-dependent rises in inositol trisphosphate (IP3) and cytosolic free calcium (Ca2+i) levels which preceded a similarly dose-dependent rise in prostacyclin production measured as 6-ketoprostaglandin F1 alpha (6-keto-PGF1 alpha) by radioimmunoassay (ED50 = 0.6-0.7 units/ml for all three effects). Thrombin induced these effects in the absence of extracellular calcium (EGTA) or in the presence of either 8-bromo-cAMP or the calmodulin inhibitor W7. Thrombin inactivated with either diisopropyl fluorophosphate or D-Phe-Pro-Arg-chloromethyl ketone was inactive. In contrast, Quin 2-loaded cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells failed to respond to thrombin, although stimulation with trypsin elevated IP3 and Ca2+i levels and increased 6-keto-PGF1 alpha production. Restimulation of HUVEC with thrombin or histamine 5 min after an initial stimulation with thrombin (2 units/ml for 5 min) failed to induce a second rise in either IP3 or Ca2+i levels or further production of 6-keto-PGF1 alpha, whereas restimulation with ionomycin in the presence or absence of extracellular calcium elevated Ca2+i levels and induced further 6-keto-PGF1 alpha production. However, if the initial stimulation with thrombin was terminated by addition of D-Phe-Pro-Arg-chloromethyl ketone within 10-60 s, restimulation with a second dose of thrombin induced second rises in both IP3 and Ca2+i levels and additional 6-keto-PGF1 alpha production that were greatest when the initial thrombin stimulus was briefest. These results are consistent with the conclusion that IP3 acts as a second messenger by which thrombin elevates Ca2+i levels and initiates prostacyclin synthesis in HUVEC and that in vivo endothelial cells may be stimulated multiple times to synthesize prostacyclin if each period of stimulation is brief.

Zusammenfassung Durch aufeinanderfolgende Behandlung mit Salzsäure-Kochsalz-Lösung und 2%iger Lauge kann aus pflanzlichem Material eine Rohfaser isoliert werden, die qualitativ und quantitativ dem nach dem Weender-Verfahren gewonnenen Produkt sehr nahesteht. Die Isolierung ist in 25 bis 30 min durchführbar und erfordert nur wenige und billige Chemikalien. Die Anwendung des neuen Verfahrens scheint auch bei Nichtgetreideprodukten recht aussichtsreich zu sein zur quantitativen Bestimmung der Rohfaser, sofern der vorgeschriebene Feinheitsgrad des Materials eingehalten wird.

Zusammenfassung Als diagnostisch wichtige Zellagen des Taumellolchs (Lolium temulentum L.) sind in erster Linie die Kurzzellen (Rosetten) der Deck- und besonders der Vorspelze, die Querzellen der Fruchtschale, die Pilzschicht der Samenschale und die zusammengesetzten Stärkekörner brauchbar.

Mit steigendem Chloridionenangebot lassen sich auf spektrophotometrischem Wege in Lösungen von Acetonitril und Trimethylphosphat folgende Cl-Koordinationsformen nachweisen: CoCl2, CoCl3-, CoCl4-;K12>K3>K4; NiCl2, NiCl3-, NiCl4-; in TrimethylphosphatK2~K3>K4; in AcetonitrilK3>K4; CuCl+, CuCl2, CuCl3-, CuCl4-;K1>K2=K3>K4. Die Löslichkeit des NiCl2 steigt mit der Basizität des Lösungsmittels.

Die Koordinationsform des Eisen(III)-chlorids in Trimethylphosphat und Dimethylsulfoxid wurden konduktometrisch, spektrophotometrisch und potentiometrisch untersucht. Mit Sicherheit wurden in Trimethylphosphat Fesv3+, [FeCl3]sv und [FeCl4]- und in Dimethylsulfoxid Fesv3+ identifiziert.

Chloridionenübergänge zwischen Kobalt(II)-chlorid, Nickel(II)-chlorid, Kupfer(II)-chlorid und Titan(IV)-chlorid, Antimon(V)-chlorid, Zinn(IV)-chlorid wurden spektrophotometrisch in Trimethylphosphat (TMP), Acetonitril (AN) und Dimethylsulfoxid (DMSO) untersucht und die Bildungs-konstanten der Chlorokomplexe berechnet. Dabei wurde folgende relative Reihung der Chloridionenakzeptorstärken festgestellt: inAN undTMP: CoCl2>CuCl2>NiCl2; SnCl4>SbCl5>TiCl4>NiCl2; inTMP: SnCl4>SbCl5>CuCl2; SnCl4>SbCl5>CoCl2>TiCl4; inAN: SnCl4~SbCl5>CuCl2; SnCl4>SbCl5~TiCl4>CoCl2.

Zusammenfassung Eine Tapiokamehlbeimischung läßt sich im nativen oder im hitzebehandelten Material auf Grund der getüpfelten Tracheen bzw. Tracheiden und Geleitzellen mit Sicherheit nachweisen. Auch die Stärkekörner sind als besonders charakteristisch anzusehen.

Das Ausmaß des Chloridionenüberganges von Triphenylchlormethan zu Metallchlorid wurde in Benzoylchlorid spektrophotometrisch ermittelt und ergab folgende Reihung der Cl--Akzeptorstärken: SbCl5~FeCl3>GaCl3>SnCl4>BCl3> ZnCl2>TiCl4>SbCl3>AlCl3>PCl5. Die Cl--Donorstärken wurden spektrophotometrisch gegenüber Eisen (III)-chlorid untersucht: Et4NCl>AlCl3>TiCl4>SnCl4>PCl5>ZnCl2> SbCl3>BCl3>GaCl3>SbCl5~FeCl3. Die Unterschiede gegenüber dem Verhalten in Phenylphosphoroxychlorid werden auf die relativ schwächeren O-Donoreigenschaften des Benzoylchlorids zurückgeführt.

Herstellung und Eigenschaften von Tetraalkylammoniumaziden werden beschrieben.

VCl3 und CrCl3 verhalten sich in Acetonitril als Chloridionendonoren gegenüber SbCl5, SnCl4 und TiCl4, wobei letztere Hexachlorometallate bilden. Für die Chloridionendonoren wurden die folgenden solvatisierten, oktaedrischen Koordinationsformen sichergestellt: VCl3, V3+, CrCl3, CrCl2+ und Cr3+. Die entsprechenden Hexachloroantimonate und Hexachlorostannate wurden aus den Lösungen isoliert.

Zusammenfassung 1.Die meist durch Aufbereitung isolierten Epidermiszellen der Kornrade sind nach ihrer Form und Farbe unverkennbar. Bei Mehlen kann der Befund auch noch durch den Nachweis der keulenförmigen Komplexstärken unterstützt werden.2.Zur Identifizierung derCephalaria-Früchte muß die kristallführende Fruchtwandepidermis aufgefunden werden. Durch ein längeres Aufschlußverfahren (Säure-Kochung) geht mindestens ein Teil der Kristalle in Lösung und verliert dadurch seine typische Form. Unter Umständen sind die scheitenförmigen Zellen aus den Randpartien des Endosperms bei der Untersuchung heranzuziehen.
