Butterfield was a historian, biographer, and the first editor-in-chief of 'The Adams Papers.' He began his editorial career in 1944 at Franklin and Marshall College with the discovery of a hitherto unknown letter describing the beginning of that institution. This led him to work on the 'Letters of Benjamin Rush, The Papers of Thomas Jefferson,' and finally to the directorship of the Institute of Early American History and Culture. He joined 'The Adams Papers' staff in 1954. Twenty volumes later he retired, in 1975.

The American web press developed gradually through the work of several men whose work has not been adequately recognized. In 1817, Thomas Gilpin began operating his machine, which made paper in rolls rather than in sheets, in Delaware. In 1819, Joshua and Thomas Gilpin began printing on "endless" paper. Henry Betts (1794-1880) of Norwalk, Connecticut, received a patent in 1833 for "printing paper on both sides." Shortly after, a papermaker from Ithaca, New York, Thomas Trench (1808-97), built a web press for printing books. Josiah Warren constructed another web press, for printing newspapers. With an 1843 British patent, Moses S. Beach (1822-92) built a web press in Rhode Island, but Jeptha A. Wilkinson (1791-1873), who received a U.S. patent for a similar press in 1853, was apparently the original inventor of that press. Wilkinson devised a type-revolving press seven years before the more publicized, similar press of Richard M. Hoe appeared. In 1851, Thomas H. Dodge (1832-1910) of New Hampshire invented a web press mainly for job printing, as did George P. Gordon (1810-78) in 1852. In 1853, Charles Montague (1820-85) patented an "Improved Printing-Press for Printing on a Continuous Sheet." Henry A. Bills and Stephen W. Wood of Washington, D.C., acquired a patent in 1858 for a type-revolving web press for printing newspapers, while a similar patent went to Joseph H. Smith and Lloyd M. Orvis in Wisconsin in 1860. A press for printing railroad "through tickets" for connecting railroads was patented by George Bailey in 1860. All these presses were for book, newspaper, or job printing, and actually represented only one kind of web press. 4 illus., 58 notes.

Hamilton was a historian, editor, and administrator whose primary work was 'The Country Printer: New York State, 1785-1830.' He spent his career as a historian at Albright College (1926-49), in the Division of Archives and History of the New York State Education Department (1949-63); and then served as director of that division until his retirement in 1965. While at the archives he became known as a colonial historian, and edited the papers of Sir William Johnson. Five volumes of those papers appeared between 1951 and 1965, and in 1976 he published a biography of Johnson: 'Sir William Johnson, Colonial American, 1715-1763.'

An investigation of the Carroll Family's Irish roots and the efforts to retain their faith and prosper that led them to Maryland had unanticipated twists. This colony had initially welcomed Catholic residents, extending civil rights that were denied in England or Ireland, but later passed harsh laws denying these rights. Because the Maryland assembly never managed to enact any laws depriving Catholics of the right to own land or to inherit property, the Carrolls were able to build and preserve their fortune in part through the work of enslaved people whose lives are also extensively documented in the family papers. Haiti's revolution, a slave uprising that embodied the ideals of liberty, equality, and independence, seems removed from the print culture of the Enlightenment and from the liberal democratic ideology that it helped to develop. This paper examines a substantial print archive that has attracted remarkably few historians, including Saint Domingue's weekly newspapers from 1764 onward, the refugee press of Philadelphia, and histories of the revolution published in the United States and France. This paper addresses the questions of the history of the book to the history of filihusterism. How did these soldiers of fortune and partisans of liberty, who exported revolution from the newly United States to the American territories of Spain, France, England, and the Native Nations communicate with their adversaries and partisans both publicly and in secret? The author shows how the texts associated with the founding of the United States were the model for manuscript writing, the press, and verbal rumor. Traces the life of Albert Boni (1892-1981), founder of the Readex Microprint Corporation. Boni enjoyed success in bookselling and publishing before he turned to studying photography with the goal of using microfilm technology to create a form of microprinting. He served as a consultant to the International Film Book Company that went out of business in 1939 without having produced any works. He then founded the Readex Corporation. The invention of archival quality paper that readily accepted the ink paved the way for Readex to publish bibliographies and collections of material in microprint. Boni retired from the company in 1974.

Presents an obituary for Edward Carlos Carter II (1928-2002). Carter graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1954 and received a Ph.D. in modern European history from Bryn Mawr College in 1962. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Phillips Academy Andover, the University of Delaware, St. Stephen's School in Rome, Catholic University, and Johns Hopkins University. Carter oversaw the serial publication of 'The Papers of Benjamin Henry Latrobe' (1977-86). In 1980 he became librarian of the American Philosophical Society. He served on the boards and advisory councils of many organizations and institutions. He was elected to the American Philosophical Society in 1983 and the American Antiquarian Society in 1987.

The sporting papers in New York in the early 1840s were filled with the witty and irreverent drawings of John H. Manning. A clever delineator from Boston, Manning moved to New York and worked in the shop of Robert H. Elton, known for his comic almanacs. Manning's farcical illustrations in the Whip, the Libertine, the Weekly Rake, and the Flash enable us to see important elements of the popular culture of their day, especially that segment created fur the new male sporting life appearing on the streets of American cities in the era preceding the Civil War. John W. Blassingame (1940-2000) was a distinguished historian of 19th-century African American culture and politics at Yale University, where he began to teach in 1970. Blassingame had an impressive publication record. He published a revision of his Yale dissertation as 'The Slave Community: Plantation Life in the Antebellum South' (1972), which became his best-known work. He assumed editorship of the 'Papers of Frederick Douglass,' and between 1979 and 1999 he led the publication of six volumes. In 1982 he was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society.

Obituary of Lillian B. Miller (1923-97), who taught at various universities before becoming historian of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. A tireless researcher, she published widely on the fine arts in the United States, particularly on Charles Willson Peale, and directed exhibitions as well as publication of the Peale Papers.

Oliver Wolcott, Jr. (1760-1833), secretary of the treasury and governor of Connecticut, was patron and subject of numerous portraits during his lifetime. The artists who made them, John Trumbull, Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Sully, John Vanderlyn, and Rembrandt Peale, were among the most noted of the early republic. Wolcott's portraits have not been studied as a group. Retained by individual family members or donated after his death to public institutions, they have remained uncatalogued, even misattributed. Examination of portraits of Wolcott, those he commissioned of others, and his comments about them in his papers reveal greater understanding of the geometric rise in the number of portraits commissioned in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries in a the United States. Examines the establishment and subsequent growth of newspapers in the British American colonies, within the context of the metropolitan papers on which they were modeled. The 1720's-30's was a period of experimentation that led to great variety, but by the 1740's American newspaper publishing had largely become standardized and mature. The multiplication of newspapers by 1740 led to a much more broadly informed public, since all of the mainland colonies were by then within reach of at least one newspaper.
