Background Cyclic motor patterns (CMP) are the predominant motor pattern in the distal colon, and are important in both health and disease. Their origin, mechanism and relation to bioelectrical slow-waves remain incompletely understood. During abdominal surgery, an increase in the CMP occurs in the distal colon. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of detecting propagating slow waves and spike waves in the distal human colon through intraoperative, high-resolution (HR), serosal electrical mapping. Methods HR electrical recordings were obtained from the distal colon using validated flexible PCB arrays (6 × 16 electrodes; 4 mm inter-electrode spacing; 2.4 cm2, 0.3 mm diameter) for up to 15 min. Passive unipolar signals were obtained and analysed. Results Eleven patients (33–71 years; 6 females) undergoing colorectal surgery under general anaesthesia (4 with epidurals) were recruited. After artefact removal and comprehensive manual and automated analytics, events consistent with regular propagating activity between 2 and 6 cpm were not identified in any patient. Intermittent clusters of spike-like activities lasting 10–180 s with frequencies of each cluster ranging between 24 and 42 cpm, and an average amplitude of 0.54 ± 0.37 mV were recorded. Conclusions Intraoperative colonic serosal mapping in humans is feasible, but unlike in the stomach and small bowel, revealed no regular propagating electrical activity. Although sporadic, synchronous spike-wave events were identifiable. Alternative techniques are required to characterise the mechanisms underlying the hyperactive CMP observed in the intra- and post-operative period. New findings The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of detecting propagating electrical activity that may correlate to the cyclic motor pattern in the distal human colon through intraoperative, high-resolution, serosal electrical mapping. High-resolution electrical mapping of the human colon revealed no regular propagating activity, but does reveal sporadic spike-wave events. These findings indicate that further research into appropriate techniques is required to identify the mechanism of hyperactive cyclic motor pattern observed in the intra- and post-operative period in humans.

Possible mechanisms of left-axis deviation (LAD) in the setting of left bundle branch block (LBBB) include differences in cardiac electrophysiology, structure, or anatomic axis.The purpose of this study was to clarify the mechanism(s) responsible for LAD in patients with LBBB.Twenty-nine patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathies and LBBB underwent noninvasive electrocardiographic imaging (ECGi), cardiac computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging in order to define ventricular electrical activation, characterize cardiac structure, and determine the cardiac anatomic axis.Sixteen patients had a normal QRS axis (NA) (mean axis 8° ± 23°), whereas 13 patients had LAD (mean axis -48° ± 13°; P.001). Total activation times were longer in the LAD group (112 ± 25 ms vs 91 ± 14 ms; P = .01) due to delayed activation of the basal anterolateral region (107 ± 10 ms vs 81 ± 17 ms; P .001). Left ventricular (LV) activation in patients with LAD was from apex to base, in contrast to a circumferential pattern of activation in patients with NA. Apex-to-base delay was longer in the LA group (95 ± 13 ms vs 64 ± 21 ms; P.001) and correlated with QRS frontal axis (RLAD in LBBB appears to be due to electrophysiological abnormalities rather than structural factors or cardiac anatomic axis.

Background Second-generation cryoballoon ablation is safe and effective in patients with paroxysmal (PAF) and persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). Objective This study aimed to assess the long-term clinical outcomes and freedom from AF in patients undergoing thermal-guided cryoablation without the use of an electrical mapping catheter. Methods All patients who had undergone thermal-guided second-generation cryoablation without electrical mapping between January 2015 and April 2018 at Eastbourne District General Hospital were retrospectively analysed. Success was defined as freedom from atrial arrhythmia lasting >30 s during the follow up period. Results The study included 234 patients with a mean age of 65.3 ± 10.6 years. There were 134 (57.0%) and 100 (42.7%) patients who had PAF and persistent AF respectively. Arrhythmia recurrence occurred in 38 of 134 (28.4%) PAF and 42 of 100 (42.0%) persistent AF patients after mean follow up of 40 ± 9.2 months. The patients with PAF had a significantly greater freedom from arrhythmia than patients with persistent AF (p = .040). The mean procedure time was 55.5 ± 12.2 min and the mean fluoroscopy time was 10.9 ± 4.8 min 73.5% of patients were discharged on the same day. Conclusion Thermal-guided cryoablation is feasible, safe and results in freedom from arrhythmia in the majority of paroxysmal and persistent AF patients in the long term. Randomised controlled trials are required to confirm the findings of this study.

Background: Multisite pacing strategies that improve response to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) have been proposed. Current available options are pacing 2 electrodes in a multipolar lead in a single vein (multipoint pacing [MPP]) and pacing using 2 leads in separate veins (multizone pacing [MZP]). Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare in a systematic manner the acute hemodynamic response (AHR) and electrophysiological effects of MPP and MZP and compare them with conventional biventricular pacing (BiVP). Methods: Hemodynamic and electrophysiological effects were evaluated in a porcine model of acute left bundle branch block (LBBB) (n = 8). AHR was assessed as LVdP/dtmax. Activation times were measured using >100 electrodes around the epicardium, measuring total activation time (TAT) and left ventricular activation time (LVAT). Results: Compared to LBBB, BiVP, MZP, and MPP reduced TAT by 26% ± 10%, 32% ± 13%, and 32% ± 14%, respectively (P = NS between modes) and LVAT by 4% ± 5%, 11% ± 5%, and 12% ± 5%, respectively (P 5 cm vs

Graphene metrology needs to keep up with the fast pace of developments in graphene growth and transfer. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a non-contact, fast, and non-destructive characterization technique for mapping the electrical properties of graphene. Here we show several case studies of graphene characterization on a range of different substrates that highlight the versatility of THz-TDS measurements and its relevance for process optimization in graphene production scenarios.

Background Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an established treatment in patients with heart failure and prolonged QRS duration where a biventricular pacemaker is implanted to achieve faster activation and more synchronous contraction of the left ventricle (LV). Despite the convincing effect of CRT, 30–40% of patients do not respond. Among the most important correctable causes of non-response to CRT is non-optimal LV lead position. Methods We will enroll 122 patients in this patient-blinded and assessor-blinded, randomized, clinical trial aiming to investigate if implanting the LV lead guided by electrical mapping towards the latest LV activation as compared with imaging-guided implantation, causes an excess increase in left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (LVEF). The patients are randomly assigned to either the intervention group: preceded by cardiac computed tomography of the cardiac venous anatomy, the LV lead is placed according to the latest LV activation in the coronary sinus (CS) branches identified by systematic electrical mapping of the CS at implantation and post-implant optimization of the interventricular pacing delay; or patients are assigned to the control group: placement of the LV lead guided by cardiac imaging. The LV lead is targeted towards the latest mechanical LV activation as identified by echocardiography and outside myocardial scar as identified by myocardial perfusion (MP) imaging. The primary endpoint is change in LVEF at 6-month follow up (6MFU) as compared with baseline measured by two-dimensional echocardiography. Secondary endpoints include relative percentage reduction in LV end-systolic volume, all-cause mortality, hospitalization for heart failure, and a clinical combined endpoint of response to CRT at 6MFU defined as the patient being alive, not hospitalized for heart failure, and experiencing improvement in NYHA functional class or/and > 10% increase in 6-minute walk test. Discussion We assume an absolute increase in LVEF of 12% in the intervention group versus 8% in the control group. If an excess increase in LVEF can be achieved by LV lead implantation guided by electrical mapping, this study supports the conduct of larger trials investigating the impact of this strategy for LV-lead implantation on clinical outcomes in patients treated with CRT. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02346097. Registered on 12 January 2015. Patients were enrolled between 16 February 2015 and 13 December 2017. Transparent electrodes attract intense attention in many technological fields, including optoelectronic devices (solar cells, LEDs, touch screens), transparent film heaters (TFHs) and electromagnetic (EM) applications. New generation transparent electrodes are expected to have three main physical properties: high electrical conductivity, high transparency and mechanical flexibility. The most efficient and widely-used transparent conducting material is currently indium tin oxide (ITO). However the scarcity of indium associated with ITO’s lack of flexibility and the relatively high manufacturing costs have prompted search into alternative materials. With their outstanding physical properties, silver nanowire (AgNW)-based percolating networks appear to be one of the most promising alternatives to ITO. They also have several other advantages, such as solution-based processing, and compatibility with large area deposition techniques. First cost estimates are lower for AgNW based technology compared to current ITO fabrication processes. Unlike ITO, AgNW are indeed directly compatible with solution processes, never requiring vacuum conditions. Moreover, due to very large aspect ratio of the NWs, smaller quantities of raw materials are needed to reach industrial performance criteria.The present thesis aims at investigating important physical assets of AgNW networks – unexplored (or not explored enough) so far – in order to increase the robustness, reliability, and industrial compatibility of such technology. This thesis work investigates first optimization methods to decrease the electrical resistance of AgNW networks. In situ electrical measurements performed during thermal ramp annealing and/or chemical treatments provided useful information regarding the activation process at the NW-NW junctions. At the scale of the entire network, our ability to distinguish NW areas taking part in the electrical conduction from inactive areas is a critical issue. In the case where the network density is close to the percolation threshold, a discontinuous activation process of efficient percolating pathways through the network was evidenced, giving rise to a geometrical quantized percolation phenomenon. More generally, the influence of several parameters (networks density, applied voltage, optimization level) on the electrical and thermal homogeneity and stability of AgNW networks is investigated via a dual approach combining electrical mapping techniques and simulations. A thermal runaway process leading to a vertical crack and associated to electrical failure at high voltage could be visually evidenced via in situ electrical mapping of AgNW networks during voltage plateaus. Moreover many efforts using Matlab and Comsol softwares were devoted to construct reliable models able to fit with experimental results. Due to the increasing demand for portable and wearable electronics, preliminary tests were also conducted to investigate the stretching capability of AgNW networks when transferred to elastomeric substrates. Finally, integrations of AgNW networks in several devices were performed. Specifically, studies were conducted to understand the mechanisms leading to failure in AgNW-based transparent film heaters, and to improve their overall stability. Preliminary investigations of the benefits of incorporating of AgNW networks into electromagnetic devices such as antennas and EM shielding devices are also discussed at the end of the manuscript., L’intérêt pour les électrodes transparentes (TEs) concerne un large spectre de domaines technologiques, tels que les dispositifs optoélectroniques (cellules solaires, LEDs, écrans tactiles), les films chauffants transparents, ou les applications électromagnétiques. Les TEs de nouvelle génération auront à combiner à la fois un très haut niveau de conduction électrique, de transparence optique, mais aussi de flexibilité mécanique. L’oxyde d’Indium dopé Etain (ITO) domine actuellement le marché des matériaux transparents conducteurs (TCMs). Cependant, la rareté de l’Indium, combinée à ses faibles performances en flexion mécaniques et ses coûts de fabrication élevés ont orienté les recherches vers des TCMs alternatifs. Les réseaux percolants de nanofils métalliques, en particulier les nanofils d’argent (AgNWs), se sont imposés comme l’une des alternatives les plus sérieuses à l’ITO, en raison de leurs propriétés physiques très attractives. Ces réseaux interconnectés offrent également la possibilité d’utiliser des méthodes de synthèse en voie chimique et d’impression à bas coût, sur de grandes surfaces. De manière générale, les premières estimations concernant les coûts de fabrication sont inférieures à celles de l’ITO. De plus, grâce au très haut facteur de forme des nanofils et à la nature percolante des réseaux, les besoins en quantité de matières premières nécessaires pour atteindre un haut niveau de performance sont moindres.Ce travail de thèse s’intéresse à l’étude des propriétés physiques fondamentales – inexplorées ou non encore suffisamment étudiées – des réseaux d’AgNWs, afin d’améliorer la robustesse, la fiabilité et la compatibilité de ce type d’électrodes avec les critères de performance industriels. La première partie est consacrée à l’étude des méthodes d’optimisation utilisées pour diminuer au mieux la résistance électrique des électrodes. Les mesures électriques in situ effectuées au court d’un recuit thermique et/ou après traitement chimique fournissent de précieuses informations concernant les mécanismes d’activation au niveau des jonctions entre nanofils. A l’échelle du réseau, notre capacité à distinguer les zones qui participent efficacement à la conduction électrique de celles qui seraient potentiellement inactives est un défi majeur. Pour les réseaux dont la densité en nanofils est proche du seuil de percolation, un processus d’activation discontinu de chemins efficaces de percolation à travers le réseau a pu être mis en évidence. De manière générale, l’influence de plusieurs paramètres (densité du réseau, tension, niveau d’optimisation) sur l’homogénéité et la stabilité électrique et thermique des électrodes a été étudiée, à l’aide de techniques de cartographie électrique et de simulations. A tension élevée, un processus d’emballement thermique conduisant à la formation d’une fissure physique à travers un réseau d’AgNWs soumis à des plateaux de tension croissants a pu être détecté visuellement. Des modèles de simulation via les logiciels Matlab et Comsol ont aussi été construits afin de confirmer, voire anticiper, les phénomènes observés expérimentalement. Par ailleurs, encouragés par la demande croissante pour les dispositifs électroniques portatifs en toute circonstance, des tests préliminaires ont été conduit pour évaluer le comportement des réseaux d’AgNWs sous contrainte d’étirement mécanique lorsqu’ils sont transférés sur des substrats élastiques. Ce travail de thèse a également donné lieu à l’intégration de réseaux d’AgNWs dans des dispositifs. Des études ont été menées afin d’améliorer la stabilité des films chauffants transparents à base d’AgNWs et de mieux appréhender les mécanismes favorisant l’émergence de défauts. L’utilisation des réseaux d’AgNWs pour des applications électromagnétiques (antennes, blindage) a également fait l’objet de tentatives préliminaires dont les résultats sont commentés à la fin du manuscrit.

Background: Cardiomyocyte progenitor cells (CMPCs) are a promising cell source for regenerative cell therapy to improve cardiac function after myocardial infarction. However, it is unknown whether undifferentiated CMPCs have arrhythmogenic risks. We investigate whether undifferentiated, regionally applied, human fetal CMPCs form a pro-arrhythmic substrate in co-culture with neonatal rat ventricular myocytes (NRVMs).Method: Unipolar extracellular electrograms, derived from micro-electrode arrays (8 × 8 electrodes) containing monolayers of NRVMs (control), or co-cultures of NRVMs and locally seeded CMPCs were used to determine conduction velocity and the incidence of tachy-arrhythmias. Micro-electrodes were used to record action potentials. Conditioned medium (Cme) of CMPCs was used to distinguish between coupling or paracrine effects.Results: Co-cultures demonstrated conduction slowing (5.6 ± 0.3 cm/s, n = 50) compared to control monolayers (13.4 ± 0.4 cm/s, n = 26) and monolayers subjected to Cme (13.7 ± 0.6 cm/s, n = 11, all p < 0.001). Furthermore, co-cultures had a more depolarized resting membrane than control monolayers (−47.3 ± 17.4 vs. −64.8 ± 7.7 mV, p < 0.001) and monolayers subjected to Cme (−64.4 ± 8.1 mV, p < 0.001). Upstroke velocity was significantly decreased in co-cultures and action potential duration was prolonged. The CMPC region was characterized by local ST-elevation in the recorded electrograms. The spontaneous rhythm was faster and tachy-arrhythmias occurred more often in co-cultured monolayers than in control monolayers (42.0 vs. 5.4%, p < 0.001).Conclusion: CMPCs form a pro-arrhythmic substrate when co-cultured with neonatal cardiomyocytes. Electrical coupling between both cell types leads to current flow between a, slowly conducting, depolarized and the normal region leading to local ST-elevations and the occurrence of tachy-arrhythmias originating from the non-depolarized zone.

International audience; For many years, the right hemisphere (RH) was considered as nondominant, especially in right-handers. In neurosurgical practice, this dogma resulted in the selection of awake procedure with language mapping only for lesions of the left dominant hemisphere. Conversely, surgery under general anesthesia (possibly with motor mapping) was usually proposed for right lesions. However, when objective neuropsychological assessments were performed, they frequently showed cognitive and behavioral deficits after brain surgery, even in the RH. Therefore, to preserve an optimal quality of life, especially in patients with a long survival expectancy (as in low-grade gliomas), awake surgery with cortical and axonal electrostimulation mapping has recently been proposed for resection of right tumors. Here, we review new insights gained from intraoperative stimulation into the pivotal role of the RH in movement execution and control, visual processes and spatial cognition, language and nonverbal semantic processing, executive functions (e.g., attention), and social cognition (mentalizing and emotion recognition). These original findings, which break with the myth of a nondominant RH, may have important implications in cognitive neurosciences, by improving our knowledge of the functional connectivity of the RH, as well as for the clinical management of patients with a right lesion. In brain surgery, awake mapping should be considered more systematically in the RH. Moreover, neuropsychological examination must be achieved in a more systematic manner before and after surgery within the RH, to optimize care by predicting the likelihood of functional recovery and by elaborating specific programs of rehabilitation.

Geophysical survey by Automatic Resistivity Profiling (ARP©) system of the Pierrelaye–Bessancourt area revealed remarkable conductive polygon patterns of 20- to 30-m diameter detected between 0.5- and 1.7-m depth. Trenches dug down to the limestone substrate allowed detailing of the pedological and lithological units that compose such polygonal features. The patterns are formed by greenish glauconite and carbonated sand hollows where clay-rich pedological horizons bend downward, forming narrow tongs extending up to 2- to 3-m depth. Such structures were interpreted as a buried polygonal ice-wedge network (thermokarst depressions). Geometrical relationships between the lithological units and consecutive erosional surfaces allowed the identification of successive landscape events and a landscape chronology. The sequence started during the Saalian glaciation with (1) the development of patterned grounds by thermokarstic cryoturbation; (2) the consecutive deflation/erosion during post-permafrost aridity; (3) the loess and eolian sand deposits; (4) the weathering of the former deposits with development of pedogenic horizons during the Eemian interglacial; (5) the recurrent cryoturbation and thermal cracking leading to infolding of the pedogenic horizons during the Pleniglacial optimum (Weichselian); and finally (5) the erosion that levelled the periglacial microreliefs, most probably during the last glacial stage (Weichselian), leading to the modern landscape. In this agricultural area, urban waste water has been spread for more than 100 years by flooding irrigation for food crop production and has led to high levels of metal pollution in the surface horizons of the soils. The polygonal cryogenic structures have major impacts on soil hydrology and dispersion/distribution of heavy metals toward the geological substrate. Such structures are essential to consider when conceiving proposals for future soil management of this polluted area.

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) aims to treat selected heart failure patients suffering from conduction abnormalities with left bundle branch block (LBBB) as the culprit disease. LBBB remained largely underinvestigated until it became apparent that the amount of response to CRT was heterogeneous and that the therapy and underlying pathology were thus incompletely understood. In this review, current knowledge concerning activation in LBBB and during biventricular pacing will be explored and applied to current CRT practice, highlighting novel ways to better measure and treat the electrical substrate.

A combination of electrical and optical mapping experiments has been used to obtain the EL2 distribution patterns in semi-insulating GaAs wafers. The influence of growing conditions such as stoichiometry, mass fraction solidified and moisture in the encapsulant is shown in terms of EL2 uniformity and residual doping level.
