Straipsnio objektas – vienos žymiausių XX a. Ukrainos operos dainininkės Solomijos Krušelnickos (Соломія Крушельницька, 1872–1952) kūrybinės viešnagės Vilniuje 1901 m. vasario 10 d., kovo 21 ir 22 dieną. Šis reikšmingas Lietuvos muzikinės kultūros istorijos faktas neatspindėtas ne tik lietuvių, bet ir ukrainiečių, lenkų, rusų istoriografijose (lietuviškoje Muzikos enciklopedijoje (2003) apsiribota vien apsilankymo Vilniuje metų nurodymu). Publikacijos tikslas – paskelbti detaliai atliktos analizės rezultatus, sudarančius galimybę pažinti pasaulinio garso solistės koncerto ir dalyvavimo operos spektakliuose Vilniuje aplinkybes, pateikti tikslią įvykių, lydėjusių jos atvykimus, seką ir jų recepciją mieste, įvertinti jos pasirodymų meninę svarbą vilniečiams. Kartu šiuo straipsniu siekiama užpildyti tyrimų šia tema spragą ir vilnietišku puslapiu papildyti Solomijos Krušelnickos biografų publikacijose skelbiamą medžiagą. The object of the article is the tours of Solomiya Krushelnytska (Соломія Крушельницька, 1872–1952), one of the most outstanding Ukrainian opera singers of the twentieth century, in Vilnius on 10 February and 21–22 March 1901. Not only Lithuanian but also Ukrainian, Polish, and Russian historiographies fail to reflect this significant fact in the history of musical culture of Lithuania. The concert of the world-renowned Ukrainian opera prima donna and her participation in two performances of an Italian opera troupe in Vilnius were important events in the cultural life of the city. They were warmly welcomed by the public of Vilnius and received glowing reviews. The acquaintance with the singer of extraordinary talent was a new and significant experience for the admirers of operatic art in Vilnius. The aim of this article is to publish the results of an in-depth analysis providing an opportunity to find out the circumstances of the tours of the world-acclaimed soloist in Vilnius. It also seeks to present a precise sequence of events that accompanied her visits and their reception in the city, as well as evaluate the artistic importance of her performances for the residents of Vilnius. At the same time, the article intends to fill the gap in the research on this particular theme and to enrich the material provided in the publications of the biographers of Solomiya Krushelnytska with her “Vilnius page”.

Per pastaruosius trisdešimt metų nepriklausomoje Lietuvoje įvairėjo ne tik valstybinių teatrų propaguojamas klasikinės operos repertuaras, bet ir pradėta skirti daugiau dėmesio šiuolaikinių veikalų pastatymams. Atsirado ir išaugo naujosios operos judėjimas – šis novatoriškas žanras daugiausia pristatomas tarptautinių festivalių programose ir plėtojamas nepriklausomos kūrybinės grupės „Operomanija“ veikloje. Operos kritikė, teatrologė Rima JŪRAITĖ apžvelgia šiuolaikinio muzikos teatro, naujosios operos raišką Lietuvoje: žanro raidos etapus, tendencijas ir kryptis. Over the past 30 years, not only has independent Lithuania diversified the Classical opera repertoires of state theatres, but it has also begun to pay more attention to producing contemporary works. The New Opera movement has emerged and grown: this innovative genre is presented mainly at international festivals, and has been developed in the activities of the independent creative group Operomanija. The opera critic and theatrologist Rima JŪRAITĖ reviews contemporary musical theatre and new opera in Lithuania: the stages in the development of the genre, and its tendencies and directions.

Operos menas istoriškai buvo puoselėjamas aukštuomenės ir valdovų. Nepaisant savo aristokratiškos prigimties, opera nebuvo atmesta ar uždrausta sovietmečiu kaip „buržuazinė atgyvena“. Priešingai, operos žanras išlaikė išskirtinę vietą sovietinėje menų hierarchijoje. Atitinkamai operos solistas buvo prestižinė profesija. Tie, kurie pasiekdavo karjeros aukštumų, įgydavo privilegijų, apdovanojimų ir teisę reprezentuoti sovietinį meną užsienyje. Ši galimybė buvo sunkiau pasiekiama kitų sričių menininkams. 1990 m. Lietuvai paskelbus nepriklausomybę nuo Sovietų Sąjungos situacija dramatiškai pasikeitė. Kaip ir visos kultūros bei meno institucijos, Lietuvos nacionalinis operos ir baleto teatras prarado finansinį stabilumą. Operos solistai iš ankstesnės prestižinės socialinės pozicijos atsidūrė tarp pažeidžiamiausių visuomenės sluoksnių. Kita vertus, teatre, kaip ir kitose institucijose, kilo apsivalymo nuo sovietinės nomenklatūros idėja. Straipsnyje, be šios problemos, taip pat nagrinėjami operos solisto statuso pokyčiai, pasitelkiant prancūzų sociologo Pierre’o Bourdieu kultūrinio kapitalo ir simbolinio kapitalo kategorijas iš jo kultūros lauko teorijos, pagal kurią meninė veikla analizuojama socialiniuose kūrybos, sklaidos ir vartojimo kontekstuose. Despite the fact that the network of Lithuanian culture institutions entered the early stage of independence almost without change, the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre was significantly transformed. The theater was led by prominent singer Virgilijus Noreika, who held a double position—artistic director and director general. This double position and Noreika’s methods of leadership were under strong discussion at various times at the theater. When the Singing Revolution began and lustration was one of the main topics within almost all organizations, the opera and ballet community was also involved in the process. Noreika had both supporters and critics among the staff. Some of them addressed the Ministry of Culture and the Central Committee of the Communist Party with complaints about Noreika. In fact, Noreika was a symbol of the old bureaucratic and Soviet nomenklatura systems with their hierarchy and rites. Darius Kuolys, the first Minister of Culture and Education, and his team decided to separate the functions of artistic leadership and theater management and organize a democratic contest for the post of artistic director. There were five applicants for the post of artistic director, Noreika among them. The contest was won by composer Juozas Širvinskas. Kuolys also signed the order that the theater director (or manager) should be appointed by the artistic director without any competition, at his own discretion. We can conclude from this that at the beginning of independence, creative force and freedom were the most important values. After the long Communist Party ideological rule of cultural life, a new system was launched, placing the priority on creativity and artistry. In the early stages of independence, opera singers’ social status and financial situation changed. Despite the severe social consequences of the economic crisis, the most famous singers developed their cultural capital. Virgilijus Noreika and Eduardas Kaniava dedicated themselves to pedagogical activities. Vaclovas Daunoras succeeded in making a debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he sang for 10 seasons. A few members of the younger generation successfully started international careers. Sergej Larin, Violeta Urmana, Algirdas Janutas, Edgaras Montvidas, Laimonas Pautienius, and many others adapted their skills to the needs of Western opera companies. Some singers developed their symbolic capital (prestige, authority, or influence). These qualities were used by both left- and rightwing politicians to attract voters with popular names. Nijolė Ambrazaitytė began her political career during the National Revival and later became a member of the Lithuanian Parliament. A more significant appearance of popular Soviet-era opera soloists on the political scene was noticeable in the second decade of independence, when an interest in public relations strategies emerged. Kaniava was elected to the parliament for one term. Vladimiras Prudnikovas even worked as Minister of Culture for two years. Noreika did not succeed in being reelected. Two different parties tried to employ his popularity and renown. So, the first decade of restored independence in Lithuania was a period when the opera singer evolved from being a member of the socio-cultural elite to carrying out a specific profession in which high standards of professionalism and success could ensure an exciting, comfortable life.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama rusų kompozitorių ir dailininkų įtaka Čiurlionio muzikai, apsibrėžiant sceniniais kūriniais jūros tema. Iškeliamas oktatoninių sekų vaidmuo lr jų reikšmė formuojant jūros įvaizdį. Analizuojama Nikolajaus Rimskio-Korsak- ovo (1844-1908) ir Mikalojaus Konstantino Čiurlionio (1875-1911) kūrybos paralelės: atskleidžiamas kompozitorių kūryboje panaudotų oktatoninių sekų, lietuvių liaudies dainos „Močiutė mano“ ir Rusijos stačiatikių liturginių giesmių (Obikhod) Panašumas. Pagal mitologinio pasakojimo struktūrą lyginamos ir analizuojamos dvi operos - Rimskio-Korsakovo opera „Sadko“ (1896 m.) ir nebaigta Čiurlionio opera „Jūratė“ (1909 m.). Pirmą kartą atskleidžiami abiejų operų kostiumų ir scenografijos panašumai ir aptariami kiti jų bendrieji bruožai. This paper examines the influence of Russian composers and artists on Čiurlionis’s music, artistic and operatic works based on the sea theme. For octatonic scales itself, based on previous researches, the interrelations between the sea and octatonic scales in the works of both composers will be considered. Moreover, the common features in music of both composers, Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908) and Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911), of octatonic scales and by the similar themes of Lithuanian folksong “Močiutė mano” and Russian Orthodox liturgical chants of Obikhod will be shown. Finally. Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera Sadko (1896) and Čiurlionis’s unfinished opera Jūratė (1909) will be compared and analysed in terms of the story structures from a mythological perspective, and the common features in costumes and stage designs will be shown for the first time.

Lietuvių kompozitorė Onutė Narbutaitė (g. 1956) savo kūrybinį kelią pradėjo, kai įvairiose terpėse itin aktyviai sklandė postmodernizmo idėjos. Kaip ir kitų jos kartos atstovų (neoromantikų) muzikoje, išskirtinis – ir liudijantis postmodernų požiūrį – aspektas Narbutaitės opusuose buvo ryšys su praeitimi, įvairiai naudojantis praėjusių epochų kultūriniu palikimu. Šios kompozitorės kūryba, skambanti moderniai ir atitinkanti dabarties kompozicijos kanonus, yra turiningai praturtinta kultūros praeities ženklais. Muzikologės Paulinos Nalivaikaitės straipsnyje apžvelgiama, kaip šiandienos kompozitorė integruoja praeities muzikos ir kitų menų objektus į savo kompozicijas. Ryškūs pavyzdžiai, reprezentuojantys šią Narbutaitės kūrybos charakteristiką – kamerinis kūrinys „Mozartsommer 1991“ (1991) ir kompozitorės magnum opus, kultūrine atmintimi alsuojanti opera „Kornetas“ (2012). The Lithuanian composer Onutė Narbutaitė (b. 1956) started her creative journey while the medium was dominated by Postmodernist ideas. Like the music of her peers (Neor omantics), a distinct aspect of Narbutaitė’s work that is indicative of a Postmodern outlook is a link to the past, utilising the heritag e of past epochs in a variety of ways. The work of this composer , while sounding modern and complying with all the canons of modern composition, is still enriched with signs of the cultural past. In her article, the musicologist Paulina Nalivakaitė looks at how this contemporary composer integrates aspects of older music and other forms of art into her compositions. The main examples representing this characteristic of Narbutaitė’s work are her chamber piece Mozartsommer 1991 (1991), Magnum Opus, and the opera Kornetas (2012), all oozing cultural memory.

Onutės Narbutaitės opera „Kornetas“ (2012) – reikšmingas Lietuvos kultūrinio gyvenimo įvykis ir savita žymė siaurame lietuvių operos lauke. Daugybė meno kūrinių citatų ar aliuzijų pavidalais formuoja „Korneto“ savastį, derančią postmoderniame kontekste ir provokuojančią atidesnį žvilgsnį ne tik į Narbutaitės opusą, bet ir į patį operos žanrą bei jo pokyčius postmodernioje aplinkoje, ypač sąsajų su svetimais tekstais (transtekstų) gausą, inspiruotą visuotinio praeities reflektavimo. Aktyvus istorijos apmąstymas paskatino ne tik tam tikrų žanrų muzikos refleksijas, bet ir pačių žanrų autorefleksiją ir jos nulemtą intensyvią transformaciją – vienijanti reflektyvumo dimensija lemia glaudžią žanro ir transtekstualumo sąveiką. Pasirinkto kūrinio atvejo tyrimui taikytas individualiai išplėtotas analizės modelis. Operos žanro transformacijos aspektams apibūdinti naudojamasi Gražinos Daunoravičienės žanro kriterijų klasifikacija. Kaip pagrindinė teorinė prieitis klasifikuojant transtekstualumo apraiškas operoje pasirinkta prancūzų literatūros teoretiko Gérard’o Genette’o transtekstualumo teorija derinama su Raymondo Monelle’io teksto autorystės strategijos modeliu ir papildoma lingvisto Romano Jakobsono kalbos komunikacijos modeliu, kuriuo atskleidžiamos transtekstualių elementų funkcijos. Pasitelkus šias teorines prieitis, bakalauro darbo pagrindu parengtame straipsnyje atskleistas Narbutaitės kultūrinių ir kompozicinių strategijų savitumas postmodernaus meno aplinkoje. Onutė Narbutaitė’s opera "Cornet" (2012) was a significant event in Lithuanian cultural life and a distinctive imprint in the narrow field of Lithuanian opera. Many works of art, in a shape of quotations or allusions, form the individuality of "Cornet", that fits the postmodern context and provokes a more atentive look not only at the work by O. Narbutaitė, but also at the opera genre and its changes in the postmodern environment, in particular, the abundance of links with borrowed texts (transtexts), that was inspired by overall reflections of the past. An active reflection of history has led not only to reflections of music in different genres, but also to self-reflection of the genres theirselves and their intensive transformation, thus this reflective dimension determines the close interaction between the genre and transtextuality. For the study of the chosen composition, an individually developed analysis model has been used. For designating the aspects of the transformation of a postmodern opera, Gražina Daunoravičienė’s classification of the genre criterions was employed. As the main theoretical approch to the classification of the transtextual manifestations in the opera, French literary Gérard Genette’s theory of transtextuality has been chosen which was combined with Raymond Monelle’s model of text authorship strategy, and supplemented by linguist Roman Jacobson‘s language communication model, by means of which the functions of transtextual elements have been disclosed. Through these theoretical approaches, in the author’s bachelor thesis based article, there has been revealed the uniqueness of O. Narbutaitė‘s cultural and compositional strategies in the post-modern art environment.

Lietuvoje mažai žinoma apie dailininkės ir scenografės Aliutės Mečys ryšius su šiuolaikinės muzikos atstovu, vengrų kilmės kompozitoriumi Gyorgy’u Ligeti ir tiesioginę Aliutės įtaką kompozitoriaus operai „Didysis siaubūnas“ (Le Grand Macabre), kurios pirmajam pastatymui Stokholme (1978) ji sukūrė kostiumus ir scenografiją. Aliutė dalyvavo operos kūrimo procese. Opera stebina radikalumu, nebūdingu kompozitoriaus muzikiniam mąstymui. Menininkus siejo abipusė meilė, kūrybinės įtakos, panaši trauminė patirtis. Aliutės tapybinis braižas, turintis stiprų egzorcistinį aspektą, pastūmėjo Ligeti sukurti manifestinio pobūdžio veikalą. Menininkai tose šalyse, kuriose gyveno, jautėsi svetimi, neturintys šaknų, traumuoti Antrojo pasaulinio karo baisumų. Abiejų menininkų biografijas paženklino panašios vaikystėje. Patirtos traumos. Aliutės potraukis pasakoms, raganų personažams, Gyorgy’o domėjimasis mitais ir fantastiniais kraštais turėjo gilumines šaknis. Opera sukonstruota tarsi abiejų menininkų kūrybos stilistinė simbiozė, pagrįsta žmogiškųjų afektų ekspresija, potraukiu kaukėms ir marionetėms. Operos personažai funkcionuoja būtent kaip kaukės ir marionetės. Operoje vyrauja dvi temos – meilė ir archetipinė Paskutiniojo teismo bei mirties baimė. Operoje atsiranda specifinė jungtis tarp dvasiškai suluošintų, hibridinių Aliutės personažų ir muzikinio fono, kuris kartu yra ir stilių mišinys, ir plati garsinių afektų paletė. Du egzilio paženklinti menininkai susitiko ne tik fizinėje, bet ir archetipinėje, ne tik realioje, bet ir metaforiškoje erdvėje.

Tarpukario Lietuvos operinė kultūra nebuvo vienalytis fenomenas, greičiau – gana konfliktiška ir polemiška meninės produkcijos ir kritikos lauko sąveika. Jos centre atsidūrė Valstybės teatras, dosniai remiamas vyriausybės ir akylai stebimas kritikos – savotiško visuomenės balso. Kritika, skelbiama pagrindiniame šalies dienraštyje Lietuvos aidas (leistame Tautininkų sąjungos, nuo 1926 m. perversmo iki 1940 m. – valdančiosios Lietuvos Respublikos partijos), prilygo politinės galios lauko balsui, kuriam tad turėjo paklusti meno autonomijos principų bandantis siekti teatras ir jo produkcija. Tai, kad ilgai lauktos pirmosios Nepriklausomybės laikotarpiu sukurtos lietuviškos operos, Jurgio Karnavičiaus „Gražinos“, premjera 1933 m. Lietuvos aido kritiko Vlado Jakubėno buvo sutikta rezervuotai, byloja ne tik to laiko operinio gyvenimo nevienalytiškumą, bet ir vidines įtampas politinės galios lauke, kurios per kritiko tekstus buvo atspindėtos meno sferoje. Tradicinis muzikologijos kanonas nesuteikia reikalingų metodologinių prieigų išanalizuoti priežastis, kodėl „Gražina“ kritiko nebuvo pripažinta kaip „tikra“ tautinė opera; šiuo atveju susiduriame su opera kaip socialiniu fenomenu, o muzikologijos kanonas operos sąvoką suredukuoja iki „muzikos“ arba „muzikos kūrinio“ sensu stricto. Užtat ypač parankia tampa prancūzų sociologo Pierre’o Bourdieu (1930–2002) socialinio lauko teorija ir jos sąvokos. Publikacijos tikslas – taikant šias sąvokas išanalizuoti tarpukario Lietuvos operinės kultūros nevienalytiškumo, o konkrečiai – „Gražinos“ ir jos kompozitoriaus savotiško atmetimo oficialiosios kritikos lauke, priežastis. The operatic culture is inseparable from its social environment, and as such it implicates not only a musicological, but also sociological and anthropological approach. The operatic culture of interwar Lithuania (192038–1940) was a rather controversial phenomenon. In the middle of it stood the State Theatre of Kaunas (then, the capital of Lithuania) that was richly subsidized by the state. However, the critique – reviews in national dailies – particularly those dealing with the subject of national operas, indicated a certain tension or a conflict of interest concerning legitimation in the opera field between its agents. The case of the premiere of Jurgis Karnavičius’ opera "Gražina" (1933) – the first new Lithuanian opera staged in the independent Lithuania – is representative in this regard. A critic of a semiofficial newspaper of the day "Lietuvos aidas" (Lithuanian Echo), Vladas Jakubėnas, wrote in his review: "Our society’s desire to have a national opera was not totally fulfilled this time. As we know from the history of opera, such works get created only by those who descend from the core of the nation. The spirit of Mr. Karnavičius’ music isn’t truly close to our folk tunes". As we can see in this evaluation of the work, the criteria of the evaluation of the work – society’s desire to have a national opera that must be fulfilled and expectation that the spirit of the music must be truly Lithuanian – are not connected sensu stricto with the art itself, but with some extra-artistic expectations. To investigate the reasons of the rejection of Karnavičius’ "Gražina" as a truly Lithuanian opera one could invoke the concept of the social field defined by a French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu (1930–2002) and his definitions of habitus, cultural capital, illusio and others. By means of the Bourdieusque field we could maintain that Lithuanian operatic culture during the interwar period existed as a controversial interplay between at least two fields. The first one was an autonomous field of artistic (in our case, operatic) production, which – after Bourdieu – emerged by refusing or turning upside down the principle of material benefit. The second one is the field of political power that aimed at specific tasks (therefore negating the autonomy of art) and manifested through the critics’ reviews. The aim of the article is to discuss the main definitions of Bourdieu’s "field sociology" as a means for investigating the interwar Lithuanian operatic culture as a controversial social phenomenon.

Žymi šiuolaikinė lietuvių kompozitorė Onutė Narbutaitė (g. 1956) savo kūrybinių įkvėpimų šaltinį atrado Reinerio Maria Rilke’s poezijoje. Tai ypatingas kultūrinis dialogas, atskleidžiantis Rilke’s poezijos gilumą ir paverčiantis ją dabartimi. Aktualios laiko filosofijos idėjos, susijusios su Europos humanistinėmis vertybėmis ir jų apokalipse, bei menininko vienatvės tema rado atgarsį O. Narbutaitės muzikoje. Kompozitorė absorbuoja kultūrinio saulėlydžio estetizmą, ieškodama ypatingų praeities epochų ir asmeninio likimo ženklų. O. Narbutaitės muzikinėje kalboje svarbus Europos kultūrinis kontekstas, apimantis ne tik muziką, bet ir literatūrą, architektūrą, skulptūrą, tapybą, fotografiją, senus laiškus, archyvus ir dienoraščius. Ypač ryškus jos dialogas su vokiečių poeto Rilke’s kūryba, susietas su amžinuoju skausmu, menine visata ir vienatvės filosofija. Šių dienų kontekstas skatina iš naujo atrasti santykį su Europos kultūra ir Rilke’s kūryba, kuri atspindi Europos saulėlydžio patirtį. Filosofinės-estetinės Rilke’s poezijos kategorijos atsiskleidžia muzikoje kaip transcendentinių šifrų seka. Operos kūrinys „Kornetas“ atspindi poetines vizijas ir laiko filosofiją. Kontekstualumas yra pagrindinis O. Narbutaitės kūrybinis faktorius. Rilke’s poetinių kontekstų universalumas padeda atskleisti vientisą laiko ašį, egzistencinę vienatvę, trapumą ir amžinybę. O. Narbutaitė subtiliai išreiškia Rilke’s kūrybos leitmotyvus bei laiko slėpinius.

Kitataučių menininkų lietuviškos tematikos kūriniai yra savitas meno kultūros reiškinys. Daugiausia tokių kūrinių sukūrė kaimyninių šalių rašytojai, poetai, dramaturgai; yra ir muzikos kūrinių. Tokiai kūrybai gali būti taikomas lituanikos, t. y. meno (grožinės literatūros, muzikos ir pan.) lituanikos, terminas. Straipsnyje primenamos kitataučių kompozitorių lietuviškų siužetų operos, kai kurie kitų žanrų kūriniai, Eduardo von Keyserlingo lietuviško siužeto dramos „Pavasario auka“ pastatymai lietuvių scenose. Sylvio Lazzari operos „Le Sauteriot“ („Žiogas“) libretas parašytas pagal Keyserlingo dramą. Straipsnyje apibūdinama operos struktūra, muzikos kalba, leitmotyvų sistema, lietuvių liaudies dainų melodikos savybių vartojimas. Opera lietuvių muzikologijoje nagrinėjama pirmą kartą; naudotasi klavyru. Artworks based on Lithuanian themes by foreign artists form a distinctive phenomenon of art culture, and may be called artistic lituanica. The largest part of such the works were created by writers, poets, and dramatists of neighbouring countries; operas and music works of other genres exist as well. The libretto of the opera "Le Sauteriot" ("The Grasshopper") by Sylvio Lazzari was written after the drama by Eduard von Keyserling "Ein Frühlingsopfer". The structure, musical language, system of leitmotifs as well as the use of features of Lithuanian folk songs is described in the article. The opera has been analysed in Lithuanian musicology for the first time; the vocal score was used.

Straipsnyje kalbama apie muzikos semiotiko Eero Tarasti mokslinių leidinių „Mitas ir muzika“ („Myth and Music“), „Muzikos semiotikos teorija“ („A Theory of Musical Semiotics“), „Egzistencinė semiotika“ („Existential Semiotics“), „Klasikinės muzikos semiotika“ („Semiotics of Classical Music“) problematiką, apie jo veikalų pritaikymą analizuojant meno tekstus ir muzikos kūrinius. Tam tikri Tarasti darbų epizodai taikomi charakteringiems naratyviniams lietuvių autorių – Jono Tamulionio, Jurgio Gaižausko ir Zitos Bružaitės – operų bruožams atskleisti. Kūriniai analizuojami skirtingais, atskiriems veikalams struktūriškai ir žanro požiūriu artimesniais (struktūralistiniu ir egzistencinės semiotikos) aspektais. Atkreipiamas dėmesys į skirtingą operų formavimą ir traktuotę, konkrečiai naratyvumą kaip procesą ir sistemą vaizduojamojo ir psichologizuoto pobūdžio operose. Article is about the topics of academic works by music semiotic Eero Tarasti "Myth and Music", "A Theory of Musical Semiotics", "Existential Semiotics", "Semiotics of Classical Music", where issues are raised about the application of his works while analyzing art texts and music works. Separate episodes of Tarasti’s works are applied for revealing characteristic narrative features of operas by Lithuanian composers – Jonas Tamulionis, Jurgis Gaižauskas and Zita Bružaitė. The works are analyzed from different aspects (structural and existential semiotics of music) closer structurally and with genre to separate works. Attention is given to different opera formation and approach, specifically, narrativity as a process and as a system in the operas of descriptive and psychologized nature.

Lietuvių išeivijos muzikiniame gyvenime JAV svarbią vietą užėmė operetė, ypač XX a. pirmoje pusėje. Ji padėjo išeiviams vienytis etniniu pagrindu, puoselėti gimtąją kalbą ir tautines tradicijas, ugdyti muzikinį jų skonį ir atlikėjų gebėjimus. Tačiau iki šiol ši tema mažai ką domino. Tai lėmė muzikologiniams tyrimams reikiamos medžiagos ir dėmesio lietuvių egzodo muzikinei kultūrai stygius. Todėl šio straipsnio tikslas yra ištirti operetės žanro vaidmenį lietuviškoje išeivijos scenoje meniniu ir socialiniu požiūriu. Uždaviniai: apžvelgti lietuviškos operetės atsiradimo prielaidas JAV; išryškinti Miko Petrausko indėlį puoselėjant šį žanrą išeivijoje; aptarti operečių tematiką; išanalizuoti operečių libretus ir muziką; įvertinti operetėse atsispindėjusią tapatumų kaitą. Tyrimas atliktas naudojant chronologinį metodą, grindžiamą istorinio nuoseklumo principu, ir ieškant naujų šaltinių bei pristatant juos lietuvių muzikologijos informacinėje erdvėje. Šiuos šaltinius pavyko aptikti Klaipėdos universiteto dr. Kazio Pemkaus bibliotekoje-archyve, Juozo Žilevičiaus-Juozo Kreivėno lietuvių muzikos archyvo fonduose Čikagoje, taip pat senojoje ir sunkiai prieinamoje lietuvių išeivijos periodikoje. Tai ir leido pakelti lietuviško egzodo teatro uždangą ir įvairiais rakursais pažvelgti į pusę amžiaus joje karaliavusią operetę. In the musical life of the Lithuanian émigrés in the USA, a significant role was played by operetta, and particularly in the early 20th century. It contributed to Lithuanians’ unification on the ethnic basis, to their cherishing of the native language and national traditions, and to the development of their musical taste and performing skills. However, up to the present time, the subject has not attract great interest due to a shortage of materials necessary for musicological research and a lack of attention to the musical culture of the Lithuanian émigrés. Therefore, the aim of the article is to examine the role of the operetta genre on the stage of the Lithuanian émigrés from artistic and social viewpoints. The objectives are: a) to review the prerequisites for the appearance of Lithuanian operetta in the USA; b) to emphasize the contribution of Mikas Petrauskas to the development of the genre in emigration; c) to review the themes of operettas; d) to analyze the librettos and the music of operettas; and e) to assess the change in identities as reflected by operettas. The research was conducted by means of a chronological method based on the principle of historical consistency and of looking for new sources and introducing them to the information space of Lithuanian musicology. The sources were found in Dr. Kazys Pemkus Library-Archives of Klaipėda University, in the depository of Juozas Žilevičius-Juozas Kreivėnas Lithuanian music archives in Chicago, and the old periodicals of the Lithuanian émigrés. All that enabled the author to raise the curtain of the Lithuanian operetta theatre in emigration and to view operetta that predominated there for a half century from different angles.

Mikalojaus Konstantino Čiurlionio ir Sofijos Kymantaitės kūrybinis tandemas yra vienas ryškiausių X X amžiaus pradžios lietuvių kultūroje. Iš bendros jųdviejų kūrybos straipsnyje daugiausia dėmesio skiriama tautinės operos „Jūratė" projektui. Kadangi muzikinio teksto fragmentai nei libretas neišliko, hipotetiškai rekonstravus siužeto intrigos mazgus, straipsnyje pateikiama platesnė Vidurio Europos (čekų) nacionalinės operos moteriškųjų personažų apžvalga. Šiame kontekste ryškėja Čiurlioniu poros siekis pradėti lietuviškos operos istoriją kūriniu, atitinkančiu modernizuotos Rytų Europos operos standartus. Straipsnio struktūra tridalė: pirmame ir antrame skyriuose aptariami lygiavertės Čiurlioniu partnerystės argumentai, moters vaizdiniai XIX amžiaus pabaigos - XX amžiaus pradžios literatūroje bei mene - nuo Madonos iki Chimeros - ir Jūratės personažo vieta šioje skalėje. Paskutinė straipsnio dalis skirta atskleisti Vidurio ir Rytų Europos meno atstovų pasaulėjautos sąsajas, lyginant gyvenimo ir meno sintezės šalininko Františeko Ksavero Saldos ir rašytojos Ruženos Svobodovos susirašinėjimą su Čiurlionio laiškų Čiurlionienei-Kymantaitei motyvais. Pastangos gyvenimą pakylėti iki grožio idealo (gyvenimo ir meno sintezės programa) siejasi su Nietzsches iškeltąja „tragedijos gimimo iš muzikos dvasios" įžvalga. The creative tandem of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis and Sofija Kymantaitė is one of most outstanding in the early 20th c. Lithuanian culture. The paper mainly focuses on their joint project of the national opera “Jūratė”. Since neither the fragments of the musical text nor the libretto survived, having hypothetically reconstructed the intrigue nodes of the plot, the paper presents a wider overview of feminine characters of Western European (Czech) national opera. This context reveals the aspiration of the Čiurlionis couple to start the history of Lithuanian opera with a work meeting the standards of modernised Eastern European opera. The paper consists of three parts: the first and second chapters discuss the arguments of the equivalent partnership of the Čiurlionis couple, the images of a woman in literature and art of the end of the 19th c. – the beginning of the 20th c. – from Madonna to Chimera – and the place of the character of Jūratė in this scale. The final part of the paper reveals the connections of the worldview of Central and Eastern European art representatives, comparing the correspondence between František Xaver Šalda, advocate of the life and art synthesis, and writer Růžena Svobodová and the motifs of Čiurlionis’ letters to Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė. The efforts to lift life to the ideal of beauty (life and art synthesis programme) are related to Nietzsche’s insights of “the birth of tragedy and the spirit of music”.

Straipsnio objektas - operetės spektakliai Vilniuje XIX a. antrojoje p. ir XX a. pradžioje. Publikacijos tikslas yra atskleisti operetės spektaklių radimąsi ir šio žanro raidos ypatumus Vilniuje - teatrinio ir muzikinio Lietuvos gyvenimo centre. Taip pat siekiama išryškinti įvairias refleksijas, lydėjusias šio žanro spektaklius. Čia nagrinėjamos priežastys, paaiškinančios didelės visuomenės dalies bei teatro kritikos pasipriešinimą operetei ankstyvuoju jos sklaidos laikotarpiu, atskleidžiamos aplinkybės, lėmusios palaipsnį operetės įsitvirtinimą teatriniame miesto gyvenime šalia kitų muzikinių teatrinių žanrų. Operetės sklaidos Vilniuje ypatumai nagrinėjami bendrame Vakarų ir Rytų Europos kultūrinio gyvenimo kontekste. The paper is aimed to show the development of operetta in Vilnius, the heart of musical and theatrical life of Lithuania. The article also inteds to include opinions of the general public in Russian Empire and in Vilnius. The author considers the reasons for criticism hostility in the beginning. It also reveals the circumstances in which the operetta took a stable place in the repertoire side by side with the other genres. The paper also strives to survey the body of operetta in terms of its development, change and regional characteristics that become evident when viewed in the general context of the European theatrical life.

Straipsnyje siekiama atkreipti dėmesį į XX a. pirmojoje pusėje susiformavusią estetinę stilistinę mašinizmo idiomą. Klausantis to meto kūrinių bei analizuojant negausią šiam reiškiniui skirtą muzikologinę literatūrą aiškėja, kad kūrėjų susidomėjimas technologijomis XX a. pirmojoje pusėje reiškėsi dviem kryptimis: tai eksperimentinio pobūdžio muzikos mašinų (dažniausiai elektrinių) konstravimas ir mašinistinių įvaizdžių perteikimas tradicinėmis akademinės muzikos raiškos priemonėmis ir instrumentarijumi. Išsamių studijų apie mašinizmo muziką kol kas nėra – trūksta ir visuotinai priimtos terminologijos, todėl svarbiausios straipsnio autorės vartojamos sąvokos, kurių neaptikta skaitytuose šaltiniuose, būtų šios: 1) mašinizmo idioma – estetinė stilistinė muzikos kryptis, kuriai būdingi technologijų inspiruoti įvaizdžiai ir mašinistinis muzikos kalbos priemonių kompleksas; 2) mašinistinis kompleksas – muzikos kalbos elementų, būdingų embleminių mašinistinių kompozicijų stilistikai, visuma Machinistic images in the works of European composers significantly added in the number in the first half of the 20th century. Technologies became an important source of inspirations influencing various levels on creative solutions of progress-captured composers looking for innovations in the musical language. Dynamic transformation of the musical thought was facilitated by internal and external impulses. The external world was quickly changing and impacting, at a rapid pace, on human life, human philosophy and conception of identity. Such a situation required original concepts from a creator based on new artistic images that respond to the external changes and ease integration into social life. Composers differently approached the remains of musical romanticism. Some of them relentlessly hunted them away and created a new sound system themselves, exploring into new themes (Italian futurists), while others laid completely new paths for the development of harmony and timbre (the new Vienna school) or turned back to the traditions of rational composing so cherished in classicism and earlier epochs (neo-classicists). The new objectivity (Ger. Neue Sachlichkeit) started manifesting a radical commitment to the modern environment focusing on the visible, objective reality. Max Brand, Paul Hindemith and Ernst Křenek, the authors of "operas of the time" (Ger. Zeitoper) composed in 1927–1930, inserted into them the then relevant ideas of progress, technological novelties, modern communication systems and means of transport, presenting them as decorations, plot themes and artistic devices or, sometimes, simply as new acoustic effects. The Futurist Manifesto published in "le Figaro" in Paris on 20 February 1909 may be considered a written document marking the start of avant-garde movements. An antithesis of mechanics and organicity, machine and human being represented the main axis of futurist ideological tension. "Machinist Hopkins" by Max Brand, opera belonging to the above mentioned "operas of the time", seems to be the most striking reflection of this ideology in music. A similar human-degrading or humanexploiting approach is conveyed by the portrait of Ajax in the opera "Transatlantic" by George Antheil. Possessed by the same mood, the scientist in "Metropolis" by Fritz Lang (1927) creates a robot - a machine-woman. "Symphony of Factory Sirens" by Arseny Avraamov can be regarded as the apotheosis of everything relating to technological progress. In 1922, when a conductor climbed on a roof in Baku and conducted the concert to factory sirens and steam whistles, all sound sources of the city were involved. Technological images in the early machinistic compositions can be divided into two types: 1) decorative machinism - imitating single machine sounds on musical instruments; 2) conceptual machinism - attempting to create an aesthetic stylistic idiom of music. At the beginning of the 20th century, technological images were created "manually", that is, attempting to reproduce machine sounds using traditional means of musical expressions. […] Certainly, this had to do primarily with an opportunity to record any sound you like and to use it in the creation of music

Straipsnyje Balio Dvariono opera "Dalia" (1959) nagrinėjama iki šiol mažai tyrinėtais aspektais, siekiant nustatyti įvairias sąsajas su to meto istoriniu kontekstu, estetinėmis nuostatomis, socialiniais momentais, kvestionuojami kai kurie iki šiol su šiuo sceninės muzikos opusu susiję stereotipai bei norima nustatyti to istorinio laikotarpio bei paties kūrėjo paliktus stiliaus ženklus. Pasak autorės, opera "Dalia" tęsia romantizmo operų tradiciją, joje akivaizdi rusų kompozitorių įtaka. Čia gausu ryškių, įsimenančių melodijų, vyrauja homofonija, muzikoje persipina herojinis ir lyrinis pradai. Opera atitiko daugelį to meto sovietinių ideologų reikalavimų: sukurtas herojinis-istorinis libretas (pagal rašytojo ir dramaturgo Balio Sruogos dramą "Apyaušrio dalia"), jame atsispindi kovos momentai, vaizduojami liaudies kovotojai, šaržuojami aukštuomenės bei dvasininkijos atstovai. Operai būdingas epizodiškumas bei muzikinių vaizdinių kaleidoskopiškumas. Ypač svarbus vaidmuo teko orkestrui: jam pavesta visos operos muzikinės medžiagos vienytojo funkcija; orkestro partijoje jautriai reaguojama į dramaturginius niuansus, siužeto posūkius, jis tarsi komentuoja scenoje vykstančius įvykius. B. Dvariono "Dalia" buvo pastatyta tris kartus - du pastatymai Lietuvos nacionaliniame operos ir baleto teatre (1959 m. ir 2004 m.) ir Lietuvos televizijos filmas (1985 m.). The article examines Balys Dvarionas’s opera "Dalia" (1959) in terms of aspects, which have not been extensively studied until present for the purpose of establishing different relations with the historical context of the period, the aesthetical provisions, social moments, questions certain stereotypes, related to the said opus and attempts to identify the signs of the style of the historic period and those, left by the creator himself. According to the author the opera "Dalia" continues the tradition of the Romanticist operas, the influence of Russian composers is obvious. The opera is plentiful with prominent and memorable melodies, homophony and heroic and lyrical subjects intertwine in the music. The opera complied with most Soviet ideological requirements of the period: a heroic – historical libretto (according to the drama “Apyaušrio Dalia” by Balys Sruoga), reflecting moments of fighting, depicting folk fighters and caricaturing the representatives of nobility and clergy. The opera characterizes with patchiness and kaleidoscopicality of musical imagery. The orchestra plays an especially important role, i. e. the function of unification of the musical material of the entire opera; the orchestra part sensitively responses to the dramaturgy nuances, turns of the plot, the orchestra comments the events on the stage. B. Dvarionas’s "Dalia" was staged three times – two stagings at the Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre (in 1959 and in 2004) and as a Lithuanian Television film (in 1985).

Daugelį metų (1795–1918) Lietuva neegzistavo kaip suvereni Europos valstybė. Tai buvo ilgai trukusių karų ir okupacijų padarinys. Tačiau Lietuva tiesiogiai ar netiesiogiai darė įtaką užsienio šalių kompozitoriams. Šio straipsnio tikslas – nustatyti ryšius, siejusius XIX– XX a. ne lietuvių kilmės kompozitorius su Lietuva, ir kaip tie ryšiai atsispindėjo jų muzikoje. Jis yra labiau skirtas ne Lietuvos, bet užsienio skaitytojams, norintiems susipažinti su Lietuvos įvaizdžiu Europos muzikinės kultūros kontekste. For a number of years (1795–1918), Lithuania did not exist as a sovereign European country as a result of long-term wars and occupations. However, the name of Lithuania was directly or indirectly reflected in the works of foreign composers. The aim of the article is to identify the connections of the 19th and 20th centuries foreign composers and Lithuania, and the way those connections were reflected in their music. This article is addressed to foreign readers who are willing to learn about the image of Lithuania in the context of the European musical culture

Karo ir vokiečių okupacijos metų (1941-1944) muzikinis gyvenimas Lietuvoje - mažai tyrinėta tema. Tuo metu veiklą tęsė jau anksčiau įsteigti muzikinės kultūros židiniai, kūrėsi ir pradėjo veikti nauji. Dar sovietų okupacijos metu įkurta ir pirmą premjerą 1941 m. gegužės 1 d. parengusi Kauno operetės trupė kaip tik vokietmečiu išgyveno reikšmingą ir intensyvų veiklos etapą. Tuo metu pastatyti keturi nauji spektakliai, pradėtas rengti ir penktas, suformuotas trupės branduolys, radosi galimybė debiutuoti būriui jaunosios kartos solistų. Tyrimo tikslas - atskleisti Kauno operetės formavimosi procesą, trupės veiklos panoramą, tos veiklos galimybes politinių lūžių akivaizdoje, paanalizuoti šios trupės bei jos puoselėjamo žanro recepciją spaudoje. Metodai: istorinis, statistinis, archyvinių šaltinių, amžininkų prisiminimų bei spaudos analizė. Musical life of Lithuania during the years of war and occupation (1941-1944) is a little researched field. On that time, previously established organisations of musical culture, that proceeded their operation, were added with new ones. Kaunas Operetta Troupe, which was established in soviet occupation times and performed the opening play on May 1, 1941, has experienced important and intensive activity period right during the period of German occupation. On that time, it prepared four new performances and started to prepare the fifth one, and formed the core of the troupe. This was the opportunity of debut to a large number of young generation soloists. The objective of the research was to disclose the formation of Kaunas Operetta, the retrospective of its activities, and its possibilities to act in a face of political brake downs; and analyse the reception of such troupe and its artistic genre in press. Methods used: historical, statistical, archive sources, historical memories, and press analysis.

Vidmantas Bartulis (g. 1954) yra netipiškų kūrybinių sprendimų autorius. Straipsnyje nagrinėjama etapinis jo darbas ir kartu viena reikšmingiausių XX a. pabaigos lietuvių opera – „Pamoka“ (1993) pagal Eugene Ionesco absurdo dramą. Aptariamas operos netradiciškumas, susijęs su balansavimu tarp dramos ir muzikinio teatro ir kompozitoriaus naudojama vokalinė maniera – „virvelinė technika“. Tai tam tikra specifinė aleatorikos atmaina, turinti sąsajų su sprechgesang. Aleatorika lietuvių muzikoje turi jau kelių dešimtmečių tradicijas. Bartulio „Pamokoje“ aleatoriką galima apibrėžti keliaprasmiškai, iš vienos pusės „virvelinė technika“ leidžia veikėjams būti pakankamai laisvais, iš kitos pusės orkestras ir tekstas kietai išlaiko rėmą. Kalbant apie „Pamoką“ negalima apeiti grotesko. Groteskas muzikoje ne toks ryškus ir akivaizdus kaip, tarkim, dailėje ar literatūroje, tačiau Bartulio operoje įžvelgiamos gana ryškios jo apraiškos. Daugelis tyrinėtojų pabrėžia, kad posmoderniems kūrėjams ir apskritai šio laiko kultūrai dažnai svarbu ne tai, kas yra pasakoma, parodoma, kiek kaip tai padaroma. Įvertinama autoriaus dalyvavimo pastatyme svarba, jo kaip personažo-dirigento santykis su savo kūryba, taip pat tradicinio orkestro ir aleatorinio vokalo priešprieša, komunikavimo su klausytoju pobūdis. Kompozitoriaus dalyvavimas atlikimo procese aleatoriką iš dalies ribojo. Orkestro vaidmuo pakankamai norminis. Yra tiksli partitūra ir viskas sugrojama. Operos pasirodymo faktas siejamas su permainų valstybės gyvenime laikotarpiu. Straipsnyje naudojama autentiška pokalbių su kompozitoriumi medžiaga Vidmantas Bartulis (born 1954) is an author with an eye for uncharacteristic creative solutions. The article discusses his period works and, simultaneously, one of the most significant Lithuanian operas of the end of XX century – “The Class” (1993) set to Eugene Ionesco’s absurd drama. There is a discussion about non-traditionality of opera, related to the balancing between drama and musical theater and vocal approach used by the composer – “threaded technique“. It is a specific type of aleatorics with links to sprechgesang. The tradition of aleatorics in Lithuanian music counts already several decades. In Bartulis’ “The Class” aleatorics can be defined in a number of ways: on one hand, “threaded technique” allows characters to be relatively free, on the other hand, the orchestra and text retain a rigid frame. The discussion of “The Class” cannot avoid grotesque. Grotesque in music is not as vivid and obvious as, for example, in art or literature, however in Bartulis’ opera, one can see its rather vivid manifestations. Many researchers emphasize that for postmodern artists and the culture of this period in general, often the importance lays not in what is being said, shown, but how it is done. The article evaluates the importance of author’s participation in staging, the relationship between him as character-conductor and his work, as well as confrontation between a traditional orchestra and aleatoric vocal, the nature of communication with a listener. Composer’s participation in performance process partly limited aleatorics. The role of orchestra is relatively standard. There is accurate score and everything is performed. The emergence of the opera is linked to the period of changes in state’s life. The article utilizes materials from authentic conversations with the composer.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama etninių tradicijų ir novatoriškumo sąveika A. Žigaitytės operoje „Žilvinas ir Eglė“, pagrįstoje sena Pamario krašto legenda. Atkreipiamas dėmesys, jog mito bei epo įtaka lėmė įvairių Europos šalių, tarp jų ir Lietuvos, profesinės sceninės muzikos žanrų raidą. Išlikę Pamario mitai sietini su senąja Europos kultūra, jie išreiškia bendrąsias ir visuotines kultūrines bei moralines nuostatas ir veikia šiuolaikinę kultūrą bei operos žanro vystymosi kryptį. Ryškiausi lietuvių muzikinės dramos pavyzdžiai E. Balsio „Kelionė į Tilžę“, A. Žigaitytės „Mažvydas“ paremti su Mažąja Lietuva susijusiais literatūriniais šaltiniais. Psichologinė būsenų drama pagal V. Mykolaičio-Putino poemą „Žilvinas ir Eglė“ praturtinama šokiu, pantomima, naujosiomis vaizdo kūrimo scenoje technologijomis, o šiuolaikinė muzikos kalba nestokoja Pamario muzikai būdingų dermių įvairovės, Eglės partijos diatoniką gretinant su chromatizuotomis Žilvino muzikinės partijos struktūromis The main purpose of the article is to find out through analysing A. Žigatytė's opera "Žilvinas and Eglė" and comparing it the other musical dramas ("Mažvydas" by the same author and "The travel to Tilžė" by E. Balsys) what correlations towards the heritage of the ethnic culture the Lithuania Minor and Pamarys (the Coast) lie in the innovating contemporary pieces of the scene. The attention is paid towards the mythology which influenced the development of the operas and ballets in various European countries and Lithuania as well. The ancient myths about Žilvinas and Eglė as well as the other Lithuanian myths can be compared to the ancient European culture and express common cultural and moral features which took part in the development of the contemporary culture and the direction of the opera genre. As Conclusions say: 1. There is plenty of the ethnocultural elements in A. Žigaitytė's opera "Žilvinas and Eglė" related to the Pamarys (Coast) region. The composer uses ancient tunes: pentatonic, doric, aeolic, mixolydic. For the Eglė's song the composer uses the structure of the folk songs which is close to those found in the gatherings of Ch. Bartsch. 2. It is the first time when birbynė (Lithuanian folk "clarnette") is used in the orchestra equally to other even more "superior" instruments uderlining the relations to the ethnomusical traditions. 3. The composer gives a meaning to the myth from the Lithuania Minor and Pamarys (Coast) about Žilvinas and Eglė by the modern means and brings nearer her piece to the sphere of the ethnical culture. 4. The A. Žigaitytė's opera is the piece of the synthetic gendre joining the plastic of the dance and the technical possibilities of the changing view on the screen, and it is the new word in the Lithuanian musical culture and the first example of the new gendre of in the contemporary Lithuanian music

JAV gyvenę lietuviai aktyviai reiškėsi įvairiuose kultūros baruose. Šiame straipsnyje mėginama nuosekliai apžvelgti 1920-1940 m. vargonininkų, kompozitorių bei atlikėjų veiklą, detaliau supažindinti su lietuvių koncertiniu gyvenimu, muzikiniu švietimu, natų leidyba ir plokštelių gamyba. Tyrimo objektas – vargonininkų, muzikos kūrėjų, atlikėjų, kritikų, pedagogų darbai ir muzikinio gyvenimo įvykiai. Šioje studijoje pateikiami susisteminti bei apibendrinti išeivijos spaudos duomenys, kurie yra papildyti straipsnio autorės specialių tyrinėjimų medžiaga. Straipsnis susideda iš keturių dalių: I dalis skirta informacijai apie vargonininkus; II – muzikos kūrėjams ir atlikėjams; III dalyje aprašomas koncertinis gyvenimas; IV – muzikinis švietimas, natų leidyba ir plokštelės. JAV skambėjusių lietuviškų kūrinių autoriai daugiausia buvo vargonininkai bei chorvedžiai. Šie asmenys rašė muziką, siekdami papildyti skurdų lietuvišką koncertinį repertuarą ir sudaryti sąlygas savo tautiečiams neužmiršti gimtosios kalbos bei papročių. Didžiausias vargonininkų rūpestis buvo apsaugoti liturginę muziką nuo „lengvojo“ žanro, ypač džiazo įtakos, išlaikyti jai būdingą stilių ir giedant, ir grojant vargonais. Koncertinis gyvenimas buvo labai margas ir intensyvus. Koncertus rengė įvairios draugijos, organizacijos ir pavieniai atlikėjai, jie vyko kukliose lietuvių įrengtose salėse ir ištaiginguose amerikiečių apartamentuose, po atviru dangumi ir paviljonuose. Be to, lietuviai pagal išgales rūpinosi savo vaikų muzikiniu lavinimu ir patys šioje srityje švietėsi. Lithuanians residing in the US were active in various cultural fields. This article tries to consistently examine the activities of organists, composers and performers in the period from 1920 to 1940, and to thoroughly present the Lithuanian concert life, musical education, publishing of notes and production of records. The subject of the research is works by organists, composers, performers, critics and pedagogues, and events of musical life. This study provides structured and generalised data from the emigration press which has been supplemented by the material from the article author’s special research. The article consists of four parts: part 1 provides information on organists, part 2 is devoted to composers and performers, part 3 describes the concert life and part 4 looks at musical education, publishing of notes and records. Authors of Lithuanian pieces performed in the US were mostly organists and choirmasters. These persons wrote music to broaden a limited Lithuanian concert repertoire and to enable their compatriots to remember their mother tongue and customs. Protection of liturgical music from the influence of an “easy genre”, especially jazz, and maintenance of its style by both chanting and playing the organ were organists’ major concern. Concert life was very exciting and intense. Concerts were organised by various associations, organisations and individual performers. They took place in modest halls equipped by Lithuanians and luxurious American apartments, in the open or in pavilions. Moreover, Lithuanians, according to their means, took care of their children’s musical education and themselves received education in this field.

Kompozitorius, dirigentas, vargonininkas, muzikologas ir pedagogas Juozas Žilevičius (1891-1985), pirmąjį tarpukario dešimtmetį ypatingai aktyviai darbavęsis Lietuvos muzikos baruose, šiandien Lietuvoje yra mažai žinomas. 1929 metais emigravęs į JAV ir pasinėręs į išeivijos muzikinį gyvenimą, Lietuvos kultūros horizontuose jis vis rečiau pasirodydavo, o sovietiniais metais jo vardas buvo minimas tik prabėgomis. J. Žilevičiaus dėka muzikinio švietimo baruose įvyko didžiulis lūžis – 1923 metais muzikos dalykas bendrojo lavinimo mokyklose tapo privalomu ir buvo patvirtinta jo parengta šio dalyko programa. Tais pačiais metais J. Žilevičius ėmėsi iniciatyvos ruošti muzikos mokytojus specialiai jiems skirtuose kursuose, rengti metodinę medžiagą, 1924 metais leisti muzikinę periodinę spaudą – žurnalus „Muzikos almanachas“ ir „Muzikos menas“. J. Žilevičius daug pasidarbavo formuodamas koncertinį gyvenimą: jam talkininkaujant 1920 metais įsikūrė Operos vaidykla, po kelerių metų virtusi Valstybės operos teatru, jo pastangomis 1922 – 1923 metais pradėta masiškai rengti kamerinės ir simfoninės muzikos koncertus, juos profesionaliai komentuoti, imti populiarinti lietuvių kompozitorių kūriniai. Straipsnyje norima giliau pažvelgti į J. Žilevičiaus muzikinę veiklą ir pasverti jo indėlį į lietuvių muzikinę kultūrą, siekiama apžvelgti jo atliktus darbus Kaune ir įvertinti juos Lietuvos muzikinės kultūros kontekste. Summarizing the musical activities of the composer, the conductor, the organist, the musicologist and the pedagogue J. Žilevičius (1898-1985) in Kaunas, it could he said, that: J. Žilevičius did a lot forming the concert life: with his assistance Opera theatre was established in 1920, which in a couple of years became the National opera theatre, due to his efforts in 1922-1923 mass organizations of chamber and symphonic music performances were started and their professional comments, he began the popularization of Lithuanian composers' works. Thanks to J. Žilevičius' work in the field of the musical education it the turning point took place - in 1923 the subject of music became the obligatory subject and its program, made by J. Žilevičius, was prepared. In 1923 he took the initiative to organize the teachers of music in the special courses and to prepare the methodology, and to publish the periodicals in 1924 - the journals "Musical Held" an "The Art of Music". He worked intensively as a pedagogue, tried to improve Kaunas' musical life, popularized music in his lectures and articles, helped to arrange the carrillion in the tower in the War museum, spread musical traditions in the Lithuanian army. J. Žilevičius was very active popularizing the choruses. He was the initiator and the organizator of the first Lithuanian song festival, incited die leaders of the choruses for common job and arrangement of such festivals periodically, declared for the national well - considered and in managed consecutive order plan of the development of the musical culture
