The microstructure and local micromechanical properties of a Ni-based superalloy thin film produced by magnetron sputtering using ERBO/1 sputter targets were investigated. The thin film consists of columnar nanograins (an average size of ~ 45 nm) with mostly orientation. Inside the nanograins, very fine nanotwins with an average thickness of ~ 3 nm are present. In-situ micropillar compression tests, complemented by nanoindentation, were conducted to evaluate the mechanical characteristics. The microhardness and Young’s modulus of the thin film correspond to ~ 11 and 255 GPa, respectively, the critical strength to ~ 4 GPa. The plastic deformation of the micropillars occurs through the formation of a shear band initiating at the top of the pillar. Inside the shear band, globular grains with random orientation form during the deformation process, while the regions near to the shear band remained unaffected.

During the first test divertor campaign of the stellarator experiment Wendelstein 7-X (Pedersen et al 2022 Nucl. Fusion 62 042022), OP1.2b, 13 neutral gas pressure gauges collected data in different locations in the plasma vessel, enabling a detailed analysis of the neutral gas pressures, the compression ratios and the particle exhaust rates via the turbomolecular pumps in the different magnetic field configurations. In Wendelstein 7-X, the edge magnetic islands are intersected by the divertor target plates and used to create a plasma-wall interface. As the number and position of the magnetic islands varies in different magnetic field configurations, the position of the strike line on the target plates and thus the neutral gas pressure in the subdivertor differs between the configurations. Neutral gas pressures on the order of few 10−4 mbar were measured in the subdivertor region. The highest neutral gas pressure of 1.75 × 10 − 3 mbar was obtained in the so-called high iota configuration featuring four edge magnetic islands per cross section. The neutral particle flux through the pumping gaps into the subdivertor volume was provided by EMC3-EIRENE simulations and allowed to analyze the relation between the particle flux entering the subdivertor and the pressure distribution in the subdivertor. Finite element simulations in ANSYS provide a detailed picture of the pressure distribution in the subdivertor volume and agree with the neutral gas pressure measurements in the subdivertor in the standard configuration featuring an island chain of 5 edge magnetic islands. Surprisingly high neutral gas pressures that were not predicted by the simulation were measured in the subdivertor region away from the main strike line for discharges in the most used magnetic configuration, the standard configuration. While the pressure ratio between the two sections of the subdivertor volume, the low and high iota section is 0.06 in high iota configuration, a ratio of 2–5 was obtained in the other configurations, indicating significant particle loads and exhaust rates on the high iota section of the subdivertor in magnetic configurations with the main strike line on the low iota divertor targets.

W7-X completed its plasma operation in hydrogen with island divertor and inertially cooled test divertor unit (TDU) made of graphite. A substantial set of plasma-facing components (PFCs), including in particular marker target elements, were extracted from the W7-X vessel and analysed post-mortem. The analysis provided key information about underlying plasma–surface interactions (PSI) processes, namely erosion, transport, and deposition as well as fuel retention in the graphite components. The net carbon (C) erosion and deposition distribution on the horizontal target (HT) and vertical target (VT) plates were quantified and related to the plasma time in standard divertor configuration with edge transform ι = 5/5, the dominant magnetic configuration of the two operational phases (OP) with TDU. The operation resulted in integrated high net C erosion rate of 2.8 mg s−1 in OP1.2B over 4809 plasma seconds. Boronisations reduced the net erosion on the HT by about a factor 5.4 with respect to OP1.2A owing to the suppression of oxygen (O). In the case of the VT, high peak net C erosion of 11 μm at the strike line was measured during OP1.2B which converts to 2.5 nm s−1 or 1.4 mg s−1 when related to the exposed area of the target plate and the operational time in standard divertor configuration. PSI modelling with ERO2.0 and WallDYN-3D is applied in an interpretative manner and reproduces the net C erosion and deposition pattern at the target plates determined by different post-mortem analysis techniques. This includes also the 13C tracer deposition from the last experiment of OP1.2B with local 13CH4 injection through a magnetic island in one half module. The experimental findings are used to predict the C erosion, transport, and deposition in the next campaigns aiming in long-pulse operation up to 1800 s and utilising the actively cooled carbon-fibre composite (CFC) divertor currently being installed. The CFC divertor has the same geometrical design as the TDU and extrapolation depends mainly on the applied plasma boundary. Extrapolation from campaign averaged information obtained in OP1.2B reveals a net erosion of 7.6 g per 1800 s for a typical W7-X attached divertor plasma in hydrogen.

Hot spots and bright patterns on plasma-facing components (PFC) in visible light are observed in electron cyclotron resonance heated (ECRH) plasmas at low densities in the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X. The events are often located far outside of any convective plasma loads and led in some cases to damages of diagnostic components, where the interaction zones qualitatively agree with fast particle loss simulations. Reciprocating electric probes indicate that this phenomenon is related to a non-thermal electron population that can have a beam like character, being directed in one parallel direction. Further, the electrons can be trapped on rational flux surfaces and be used to map magnetic islands.

Carbon net erosion and deposition at the test divertor unit (TDU) of Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) were measured for the discharge period OP 1.2b in the year 2018 using 18 specially prepared target elements in all 10 TDUs. These had lengths between 30 and 60 cm and were coated with marker layers for erosion/deposition investigations of 5–10 μm carbon on top of about 300 nm molybdenum. The marker layer thicknesses were measured by elastic backscattering spectrometry (EBS) before and after plasma exposure using 2.5 MeV protons; the surface morphology was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and focused ion beam cross-sectioning (FIB), the surface roughness was determined using a two-dimensional optical profiler. Plasma-exposed surfaces were considerably smoother than unexposed surfaces with decreased mean roughness and a shift of the inclination angle distribution towards lower values. The erosion on the 10 TDUs was unequal within a factor of about two. During the discharge period in total 20.4 ± 5.7 g carbon was eroded from the 10 TDUs. Adjacent to the strike line some deposition of carbon was observed. Compared to the discharge period OP 1.2a in the year 2017, the net carbon erosion rate dropped by a factor of 5–6 due to regular boronizations, which reduced the oxygen (and subsequently also the carbon) content in the plasma by 1–2 orders of magnitude. The significance of erosion/deposition processes for long-pulse discharges is discussed.

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been maintained for tens of seconds. Pellet fueling allows for plasma phases with reduced ion-temperature-gradient turbulence, and during such phases, the overall confinement is so good (energy confinement times often exceeding 200 ms) that the attained density and temperature profiles would not have been possible in less optimized devices, since they would have had neoclassical transport losses exceeding the heating applied in W7-X. This provides proof that the reduction of neoclassical transport through magnetic field optimization is successful. W7-X plasmas generally show good impurity screening and high plasma purity, but there is evidence of longer impurity confinement times during turbulence-suppressed phases. Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), the largest advanced stellarator, is built to demonstrate high power, high performance quasi-continuous operation. Therefore, in the recent campaign, experiments were performed to prepare for long pulse operation, addressing three critical issues: the development of stable detachment, control of the heat and particle exhaust, and the impact of leading edges on plasma performance. The heat and particle exhaust in W7-X is realized with the help of an island divertor, which utilizes large magnetic islands at the plasma boundary. This concept shows very efficient heat flux spreading and favourable scaling with input power. Experiments performed to overload leading edges showed that the island divertor yields good impurity screening. A highlight of the recent campaign was a robust detachment scenario, which allowed reducing power loads even by a factor of ten. At the same time, neutral pressures at the pumping gap entrance yielded the particle removal rate close to the values required for stable density control in steady-state operation.

The investigation of fuel retention in fusion experiments is important in view of plasma density control as well as tritium inventory for future fusion reactors. We present a first gas balance of the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X with its inertially cooled graphite divertor. The gas balance is used to estimate the wall inventory and it is found that the wall plays an important and dynamic role, absorbing or releasing particles depending on the plasma conditions. Several different scenarios are presented and the effect of fueling and heating on the wall inventory is assessed. We find that the record duration plasma experiment of 100 s required previous shorter plasmas to be successfully conducted.

Nuclear fusion has the potential to cover a major part of mankind's energy needs under the conditions of ever-increasing population and energy consumption. Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) is a fusion experiment currently being built in Greifswald, which shall demonstrate the capability of the stellarator concept on the way to a fusion power plant. This paper presents analyses of processes in the target cooling system with the codes RELAP5 and ASTEC. The loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) during the “baking” operation mode of W7-X (i.e. under the most critical conditions because of the high temperature and pressure applied) is analysed. The response of the W7-X “baking” and main cooling circuits and the amount of coolant discharged into the plasma vessel are investigated.

It is shown by means of PIC (particle-in-cell) simulations that in magnetized plasmas with pressure gradients local charge separation occurs due to different ion and electron gyration radii. The dimensionless ratio X = n pl m/(∈ o B 2 ) being the dielectric susceptibility (with the plasma density n pl , the mass m and the magnetic field strength B) is the main parameter in the analysis.

The shielding of a test charge imbedded into a magnetized plasma has been investigated by means of a PIC (particle-in-cell) model. It is shown that the ratio of the gyration radius to the Debye length is the main parameter in the analysis. For small values of this parameter the plasma surrounding the test charge is not able to compensate this additional charge and shielding does not occur. For high values of this parameter the effect of the magnetic field vanishes and the electric forces dominate. Scaling rules are given in order to compare different sets of plasma parameters.

The current-voltage characteristics I(U) of the PSI-1 facility, a DC-low pressure-arc with superimposed magnetic field, have been measured in a wide range of parameters and for various working gases. An analytical model based on the energy and particle balance in a 1-D approximation has been developed. The results are compared with the experimental characteristics in argon and helium discharges and show a good agreement. A limiting value for electron temperature depending on the ionization potential, the neutral gas density and the ion mass is predicted by the model which is confirmed by the experiments.

The next step in the Wendelstein stellarator line is the large superconducting device Wendelstein 7-X, currently under construction in Greifswald, Germany. Steady-state operation is an intrinsic feature of stellarators, and one key element of the Wendelstein 7-X mission is to demonstrate steady-state operation under plasma conditions relevant for a fusion power plant. Steady-state operation of a fusion device, on the one hand, requires the implementation of special technologies, giving rise to technical challenges during the design, fabrication and assembly of such a device. On the other hand, also the physics development of steady-state operation at high plasma performance poses a challenge and careful preparation. The electron cyclotron resonance heating system, diagnostics, experiment control and data acquisition are prepared for plasma operation lasting 30 min. This requires many new technological approaches for plasma heating and diagnostics as well as new concepts for experiment control and data acquisition.

The effect of secondary electron emission and sputtered impurity ions on the sheath potential drop has been studied. An analytical model has been developed which allows a self-consistent description of the above mentioned effects. In the analysis different materials (two kinds of graphite and tungsten) have been compared and a considerable dependence of the potential drop on the material choice has been observed. It is shown that the most of energy coming from the plasma to the target is carried by electrons because of both the decrease of potential drop caused by SEE and the enhancement of electron current to the plate caused by sputtering.

The main atomic processes occuring at the solid wall during plasma wall interaction are presented. The data are based on experimental results obtained under laboratory and plasma conditions and/or by computer simulations.

The magnetic confinement of a hot plasma is the most promising concept to realize controlled thermonuclear fusion on earth. In the last years of intense research activities in the frame of broad international collaboration, it became clear that on the way to a stationary operating fusion reactor not only questions of plasma heating, transport and stability but also the problems associated with the choice of plasma facing materials are decisive. These issues cannot be decoupled from each other [1]. It is demonstrated that both sides, the plasma and the wall, exhibit mutual dependences. Burning conditions will not be achieved without careful adaptation of the chosen materials to the developed plasma scenarios and vice versa. Integrated concepts are required.

The problem of light ion reflection from solids is solved basing on the invariant imbedding method of Ambartsumyan. Justification is given to a linearization procedure which enables one to obtain an equation for the reflection function that can be solved analytically. A solution in the form of a series in Legendre polynomials has been obtained for the case of normal incidence of ions on the target. In the case of reflection through glancing angles, in addition to the solution in the form of a series in zeroth-order Bessel functions, we have obtained a simple analytical formula. An approximation expression is presented which describes particle scattering for all incidence and reflection angles. The satisfactory agreement between the calculation results and experimental data shows that the theory developed gives an adequate description to the light ion scattering process.

We consider inelastic backscattering of electrons with initial energy of tens and hundreds of keV by plane-parallel homogeneous and sandwiched targets. Basing on the invariance principle, we find expressions that describe the dynamics of the changes in the energy spectra of electrons reflected into a given solid angle that occur with increase of the thickness of films of different materials on substrates of finite and infinite thickness. We substantiate a procedure of linearizing the equations for the reflection function obtained by the method of invariant imbedding. We obtain an analytical solution of linearized equations in the form of a series in Legendre polynomials. A comparison with experimental data shows that the theory developed gives an adequate description of the process of electron backscattering.

Here we consider backscattering of electrons with an initial energy from 10 keV to several MeV by plane-parallel sandwich targets. Using invariance principles, we obtain a formula describing the changes in the energy spectra of electrons reflected into a given solid angle. These changes occur with increasing thickness of films of different materials on substrates of finite and infinite thickness. We present methods for calculating the reflection and transmission function used in the above calculation. Repeating this method for each layer gives the spectra of electrons backscattered by multilayer targets. Comparison with experimental data shows that the theory developed adequately describes the process of electron backscattering. Our results indicate that the spectroscopy of nonelastically reflected electrons could be very useful forin situ nondestructive express analysis of depth profiles of multicomponent materials.

It is shown that the results from the model are in good quantitative agreement with experimental data. Die Ruckdiffusion schneller Electronen wird mit Hilfe der „Einschliesungsmethode” beschrieben, wobei das nichtlineare Glied in der erhaltenen Integralgleichung auf Grund der starken Anisotropie des elastischen Streuquerschnitts vernachlassigt wird. Eine einfache analytische Losung, als Reihen-entwicklung nach den Legendreschen Polynomen dargestellt, wird im Modell kleiner Winkelstreuung und mit Hilfe der Laplace-Transformation gefunden. Es wird gezeigt, das die erhaltenen Ergebnisse gut mit experimentellen Werten ubereinstimmen.
