The analytical performance of bioelectronic devices is highly influenced by their fabrication methods. In particular, the final architecture of field-effect transistor biosensors combining spin-cast poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) film and a biomolecule interlayer deposited on a SiO2/Si substrate can lead to the development of highly performing sensing systems, such as for the case of streptavidin (SA) used for biotin sensing. To gain a better understanding of the quality of the interfacial area, critical is the assessment of the morphological features characteristic of the adopted biolayer deposition protocol, namely: the layer-by-layer (LbL) approach and the spin coating technique. The present study relies on a combined surface spectroscopic and morphological characterization. Specifically, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy operated in the parallel angle-resolved mode allowed the non-destructive investigation of the in-depth chemical composition of the SA film, alone or in the presence of the P3HT overlayer. Spectroscopic data were supported and corroborated by the results obtained with a Scanning Electron and a Helium Ion microscope investigation performed on the SA layer that provided relevant information on the protein structural arrangement or on its surface morphology. Clear differences emerged between the SA layers prepared by the two approaches, with the layer-by-layer deposition resulting in a smoother and better defined bio-electronic interface. Such findings support the superior analytical performance shown by bioelectronic devices based on LbL-deposited protein layers over spin coated ones. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Aim:The aim of this pilot clinical trial was to determine if Odyliresin ( Iresine celosia), a cytochrome-flavoprotein with a powerful anti-oxidant action on cells, has a therapeutic effect on benign prostatic hyperplasia-related lower urinary tract symptoms, reducing symptoms and prostate volume, improving the patient’s quality of life and eventually limiting the number of patients who require surgery or endoscopy after medical treatment.Methods:Thirty patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia-related lower urinary tract symptoms were recruited and followed up. Primary outcomes were assessed using International Prostate Symptom Score symptom questionnaires, quality of life score, examination, prostate-specific antigen, transrectal ultrasound, uroflowmetry with post-void residual volume. Once recruited, patients were assigned for treatment: alpha-antagonist (alfuzosin 10 mg)+Odyliresin ( Iresine celosia) 2 ml, 20 drops once daily.Results:The results for quantitative variables were expressed as mean values and standard deviation as they were all normally distributed (Shapiro–Wilk test). The study included 30 patients with an average age of 68 years (range 56–80 years). The statistical analysis of data reports significant improvement of mean values of maximum urinary flow rate (+1.2, p=0.050), average flow rate (+0.47, p>0.002), International Prostate Symptom Score (–4.8, p=0.000), quality of life (–1.4, p=0.000), total prostatic volume (–1.7, p=0.000), prostatic adenoma (–6.9, p=0.000) and post-void residual volume (–17.8, p>0.004) between baseline and 12 months after treatment. No patient had acute urinary retention during treatment or need for benign prostatic hyperplasia-related surgery at the end of the 12-month treatment.Conclusions:All patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia-related lower urinary tract symptoms received both alphalitic and Odyliresin treatment. Clinical parameters and uroflowmetry parameters significantly improved, adenoma volume and post-void residual volume were significantly reduced at 12 months. This is the first clinical experience with Iresine celosia, a phytotherapeutic agent with no scientifically proven clinical efficacy so far in benign prostatic hyperplasia.

A one-step electrochemical method based on sacrificial anode electrolysis (SAE) was used to deposit stabilized gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) directly on the surface of nanostructured ZnO powders, previously synthesized through a sol–gel process. The effect of thermal annealing temperatures (300 and 550 °C) on chemical, morphological, and structural properties of pristine and Au-doped ZnO nancomposites (Au@ZnO) was investigated. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM and SEM), as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), revealed the successful deposition of nanoscale gold on the surface of spherical and rod-like ZnO nanostructures, obtained after annealing at 300 and 550 °C, respectively. The pristine ZnO and Au@ZnO nanocomposites are proposed as active layer in chemiresistive gas sensors for low-cost processing. Gas-sensing measurements towards NO2 were collected at 300 °C, evaluating not only the Au-doping effect, but also the influence of the different ZnO nanostructures on the gas-sensing properties.

We aimed at producing a hydrogel from a chitosan (CS) derivative soluble in physiological conditions to avoid any purification step thus allowing to use the materials also as an in-situ forming material. So, we crosslinked glycol chitosan (GCS) with poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) in water at 37 °C. The scaffolds, referred as GCS-PEG, were specifically designed to be used as wound dressing materials as such (after crosslinking) or as in-situ forming materials. Different amounts of PEGDE were tested. The obtained scaffolds showed macroscopic pores and a tailorable swelling in water by controlling the crosslinking degree. Moreover, GCS-PEG scaffolds displayed a significant antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. In-vivo study using the chick embryo choriallantoic membrane resulted in a highly pronounced pro-angiogenic activity suggesting important tissue regeneration properties. Moreover, the employed materials are commercially available, no organic solvents are required and the scaling up is quite predictable.

A simple and time-saving wet method to endow the surface of organic semiconductor films with carboxyl functional groups is presented. A thin layer of poly(acrylic acid) (pAA) is spin-coated directly on the electronic channel of an electrolyte-gated organic FET (EGOFET) device and cross-linked by UV exposure without the need for any photo-initiator. The carboxyl functionalities are used to anchor phospholipid bilayers through the reaction with the amino-groups of phosphatidyl-ethanolamine (PE). By loading the membranes with phospholipids carrying specific functionalities, such a platform can be easily implemented with recognition elements. Here the case of biotinylated phospholipids that allow selective streptavidin electronic detection is described. The surface morphology and chemical composition are monitored using SEM and XPS, respectively, during the whole process of bio-functionalization. The electronic and sensing performance level of the EGOFET biosensing platform is also evaluated. Selective analyte (streptavidin) detection in the low pM range is achieved, this being orders of magnitude lower than the performance level obtained by the well assessed surface plasmon resonance assay reaching the nM level, at most.

In the present study, Au-surfactant core-shell colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) with controlled dimension and composition were synthesized by sacrificial anode electrolysis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that Au NPs core diameter is between 8 and 12 nm, as a function of the electrosynthesis conditions. Moreover, surface spectroscopic characterization by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis confirmed the presence of nanosized gold phase. Controlled amounts of Au NPs were then deposited electrophoretically on carbon nanotube (CNT) networked films. The resulting hybrid materials were morphologically and chemically characterized using TEM, SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and XPS analyses, which revealed the presence of nanoscale gold, and its successful deposition on CNTs. Au NP/CNT networked films were tested as active layers in a two-pole resistive NO2 sensor for sub-ppm detection in the temperature range of 100–200 °C. Au NP/CNT exhibited a p-type response with a decrease in the electrical resistance upon exposure to oxidizing NO2 gas and an increase in resistance upon exposure to reducing gases (e.g. NH3). It was also demonstrated that the sensitivity of the Au NP/CNT-based sensors depends on Au loading; therefore, the impact of the Au loading on gas sensing performance was investigated as a function of the working temperature, gas concentration and interfering gases.

Background:In recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) usual prophylactic antibiotic regimes do not change the long-term risk of recurrence. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of D-mannose in the treatment and prophylaxis of recurrent UTIs.Methods:In this randomized cross-over trial female patients were eligible for the study if they had an acute symptomatic UTI and three or more recurrent UTIs during the preceding 12 months. Suitable patients were randomly assigned to antibiotic treatment with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole or to a regimen of oral D-mannose 1 g 3 times a day, every 8 hours for 2 weeks, and subsequently 1 g twice a day for 22 weeks. They received the other intervention in the second phase of the study, with no further antibiotic prophylaxis. The primary endpoint was evaluation of the elapsed time to recurrence; secondary endpoints were evaluation of bladder pain (VASp) and urinary urgency (VASu).Results:The results for quantitative variables were expressed as mean values and SD as they were all normally distributed (Shapiro–Wilk test). In total, 60 patients aged between 22 and 54 years (mean 42 years) were included. Mean time to UTI recurrence was 52.7 days with antibiotic treatment, and 200 days with oral D-mannose ( p < 0.0001).Conclusions:Mean VASp, VASu score, and average numbers of 24-hour voidings decreased significantly. D-mannose appeared to be a safe and effective treatment for recurrent UTIs in adult women. A significant difference was observed in the proportion of women remaining infection free versus antibiotic treatment.

In this paper a study of Multi Wall Carbon Nanotube films deposited at low temperature by means of a spray technique on different substrates is presented. Nanodispersion of nanotube powder in a non-polar 1,2-dichloroethane solvent was used as starting solution. Electron Microscopy in Scanning and Transmission modes were used in order to verify the morphological properties of the deposited films. Visible light detectors were prepared spraying Multi Wall Carbon Nanotubes on silicon substrates with different layouts. In some detectors the nanotubes were covered by an Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) layer. Electrical measurements, both in dark and under light irradiation, were performed and Current-Voltage characteristics are reported. The Indium Tin Oxide coating effect on the photoconductivity yield is presented and discussed along with device ageing test, resulting in a very good photoconduction and stability over four months.

We develop a nonclassicality criterion for the interference of three delayed, but otherwise identical, light fields in a three-mode Bell interferometer. We do so by comparing the prediction of quantum mechanics with those of a classical framework in which independent sources emit electric fields with random phases. In particular, we evaluate third-order correlations among output intensities as a function of the delays, and show how the presence of a correlation revival for small delays cannot be explained by the classical model of light. The observation of a revival is thus a nonclassicality signature, which can be achieved only by sources with a photon-number statistics that is highly sub-Poissonian. Our analysis provides strong evidence for the nonclassicality of the experiment discussed by Menssen et al. [Menssen et al., Phys. Rev. Interference lies at the heart of the behavior of classical and quantum light. It is thus crucial to understand the boundaries between which interference patterns can be explained by a classical electromagnetic description of light and which, on the other hand, can only be understood with a proper quantum mechanical approach. While the case of two-mode interference has received a lot of attention, the multimode case has not yet been fully explored. Here we study a general scenario of intensity interferometry: we derive a bound on the average correlations between pairs of output intensities for the classical wavelike model of light, and we show how it can be violated in a quantum framework. As a consequence, this violation acts as a nonclassicality witness, able to detect the presence of sources with sub-Poissonian photon-number statistics. We demonstrate a platform for implementing quantum walks that overcomes many of the barriers associated with photonic implementations. We use coupled fiber-optic cavities to implement time-bin encoded walks in an integrated system. We show that this platform can achieve very low losses combined with high-fidelity operations, enabling an unprecedented large number of steps in a passive system, as required for scenarios with multiple walkers. Furthermore the platform is reconfigurable, enabling variation of the coin, and readily extends to multidimensional lattices. We demonstrate variation of the coin bias experimentally for three different values.

One of the top priorities in the development of quantum cascade laser sources is the optimization ofthe heat transport dynamic. "A multi-step plasma procedure for the fabrication of high-quality SiO2/Si interfaces and the functionalization of silicon dioxide surfaces has been developed for microelectronic manufacturing industry. The substrate activation based on a plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) has been developed in order to obtain high quality SiO2/Si heterostructures. The SiO2 films have been then exposed to additional PECVD processes in order to modify the dielectric surface by polar groups. The advantage of this method consists in the possibility of activating the substrate, depositing and functionalizing high-quality SiO2 films in a single run process, at low temperature, and by means of the same equipment. A two-step plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition procedure has been developed to produce high quality SixNyHz films for quantum cascade laser applications. The procedure consists in exposing the GaAs substrate to a controlled N-2 plasma previous to the silicon nitride film deposition. The pre-treatment causes the formation of a thin GaN film that passivates the GaAs wafer. The method has been optimized varying RF power, N-2 flow rate and process time of the pre-treatments and monitoring their effects on the resulting chemical composition and dielectric properties of the nitride overlayers, by means of infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electric characterizations. A narrow window in the pre-treatment RF power, N-2 flux and time values, improves the composition, structural and dielectric properties of the silicon nitride overlayers. The best result has been found depositing the silicon nitride films on GaAs wafer after 2 min of N-2 plasma treatment with a power of 20 W and a 50 cm(3)/min flow rate. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Spin-chain models have been widely studied in terms of quantum information processes, for instance for the faithful transmission of quantum states. Here, we investigate the limitations of mapping this process to an equivalent one through a bosonic chain. In particular, we keep in mind experimental implementations, which the progress in integrated waveguide circuits could make possible in the very near future. We consider the feasibility of exploiting the higher dimensionality of the Hilbert space of the chain elements for the transmission of a larger amount of information, and the effects of unwanted excitations during the process. Design and fabrication of single photon avalanche detector (SPAD) in planar technology is reported. Device design and critical issues in the technology are discussed. Experimental test procedures are described for dark-counting rate, afterpulsing probability, photon timing resolution, and quantum detection efficiency. Low-noise detectors are obtained, with dark counting rates down to 10 c/s for devices with 10 /spl mu/m diameter, down to 1 kc/s for 50 /spl mu/m diameter. The technology is suitable for monolithic integration of SPAD detectors and associated circuits.

Controlled amounts of colloidal Au nanoparticles (NPs), electrochemically pre-synthesized, were directly deposited on MWCNTs sensor devices by electrophoresis. Pristine and Au-functionalized MWCNT networked films were tested as active layers in resistive gas sensors for detection of pollutant gases. Au-modified CNT-chemiresistor demonstrated higher sensitivity to NO2 detecting up to sub-ppm level compared to pristine one. The investigation of the cross-sensitivity towards other pollutant gases revealed the decrease of the sensitivity to NO2 with the increase of Au content, and, on the other side, the increase of that to H2S; therefore the fine tune of the metal loading on CNTs has allowed to control not only the gas sensitivity but also the selectivity towards a specific gaseous analyte. Finally, the sensing properties of Au-decorated CNT sensor seem to be promising in environmental and automotive gas sensing applications, based on low power consumption and moderate operating temperature.

Stabilized Au NPs were directly deposited on nanostructured ZnO and ZrO2 by a simple one-step strategy based on sacrificial anode electrolysis. The annealed nanocomposites are proposed as active layers in resistive gas sensors for low-cost processes. Results on the performance of gas sensors based on pristine and Au-doped MOx nanostructured thin films, used for the detection of NO2 gas, were reported at an operating temperature of 300°C, evaluating the effects of the MOx chemical composition and morphology, and the Au-doping.

We report an experimental demonstration of a one-way implementation of a quantum algorithm solving Simon's Problem - a black box period-finding problem which has an exponential gap between the classical and quantum runtime. Using an all-optical setup and modifying the bases of single-qubit measurements on a five-qubit cluster state, key representative functions of the logical two-qubit version's black box can be queried and solved. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first experimental realization of the quantum algorithm solving Simon's Problem. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical model, demonstrating the successful performance of the algorithm. With a view to scaling up to larger numbers of qubits, we analyze the resource requirements for an n-qubit version. We introduce and formalize the concept of information flux in a many-body register as the influence that the dynamics of a specific element receive from any other element of the register. By quantifying the information flux in a protocol, we can design the most appropriate initial state of the system and, noticeably, the distribution of coupling strengths among the parts of the register itself. The intuitive nature of this tool and its flexibility, which allow for easily manageable numerical approaches when analytic expressions are not straightforward, are greatly useful in interacting many-body systems such as quantum spin chains. The information encoded in a quantum system is generally spoiled by the influences of its environment, leading to a transition from pure to mixed states. Reducing the mixedness of a state is a fundamental step in the quest for a feasible implementation of quantum technologies. Here we show that it is impossible to "transfer" part of such mixedness to a "trash" system without losing some of the initial information. Such loss is lower-bounded by a value determined by the properties of the initial state to purify. One of the proposals for the exploitation of two-dimensional quantum walks has been the efficient generation of entanglement. Unfortunately, the technological effort required for the experimental realization of standard two-dimensional quantum walks is significantly demanding. We study the behaviour of the glued trees algorithm described by Childs et al. in [STOC `03, Proc. 35th ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing (2004) 59] under decoherence. We consider a discrete time reformulation of the continuous time quantum walk protocol and apply a phase damping channel to the coin state, investigating the effect of such a mechanism on the probability of the walker appearing on the target vertex of the graph. Bellman's optimality principle has been of enormous importance in the development of whole branches of applied mathematics, computer science, optimal control theory, economics, decision making, and classical physics. Examples are numerous: dynamic programming, Markov chains, stochastic dynamics, calculus of variations, and the brachistochrone problem. Here we show that Bellman's optimality principle is violated in a teleportation problem on a quantum network. We study the transport of quantum correlations across a chain of interacting spin-1/2 particles. As a quantitative figure of merit, we choose a symmetric version of quantum discord and compare it with the transported entanglement, addressing various operating regimes of the spin medium. Discord turns out to be better transported for a wide range of working points and initial conditions of the system. We relate this behavior to the efficiency of propagation of a single excitation across the spin chain. Moreover, we point out the role played by a magnetic field in the dynamics of discord in the effective channel embodied by the chain. We study the dynamical behavior of two initially entangled qubits, each locally coupled to an environment embodied by an interacting spin chain. We consider energy-exchange qubit-environment couplings resulting in a rich and highly non trivial entanglement dynamics. We obtain exact results for the time-evolution of the concurrence between the two qubits and find that, by tuning the interaction parameters, one can freeze the dynamics of entanglement, therefore inhibiting its relaxation into the spin environments, as well as activate a sudden-death phenomenon. Although a complete picture of the full evolution of complex quantum systems would certainly be the most desirable goal, for particular Quantum Information Processing schemes such an analysis is not necessary. When quantum correlations between only specific elements of a many-body system are required for the performance of a protocol, a more distinguished and specialised investigation is helpful. Here, we provide a striking example with the achievement of perfect state transfer in a spin chain without state initialisation, whose realisation has been shown to be possible in virtue of the correlations set between the first and last spin of the transmission-chain.

We have recently proposed a two-dimensional quantum walk where the requirement of a higher dimensionality of the coin space is substituted with the alternance of the directions in which the walker can move [C. Di Franco, M. Mc Gettrick, and Th. Busch, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 080502 (2011)]. For a particular initial state of the coin, this walk is able to perfectly reproduce the spatial probability distribution of the non-localized case of the Grover walk. Here, we present a more detailed proof of this equivalence. We also extend the analysis to other initial states, in order to provide a more complete picture of our walk. We show that this scheme outperforms the Grover walk in the generation of $x$-$y$ spatial entanglement for any initial condition, with the maximum entanglement obtained in the case of the particular aforementioned state. Finally, the equivalence is generalized to wider classes of quantum walks and a limit theorem for the alternate walk in this context is presented., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, RevTeX4

Multi-dimensional quantum walks usually require large coin spaces. Here we show that the non-localized case of the spatial density probability of the two-dimensional Grover walk can be obtained using only a two-dimensional coin space and a quantum walk in alternate directions. We present a formal proof of this correspondence and analyze the behavior of the coin-position entanglement as well as the x-y spatial entanglement in our scheme with respect to the Grover one. We propose a strategy for perfect state transfer in spin chains based on the use of an unmodulated coupling Hamiltonian whose coefficients are explicitly time dependent. We show that, if specific and non-demanding conditions are satisfied by the temporal behavior of the coupling strengths, our model allows perfect state transfer. We will report here on the design and realization of an optoacoustic sensor for the detection of formaldehyde. The sensor consists of a commercial QCL and a resonant PA cell. Two different cell configurations have been investigated: a "standard" H cell and an innovative T-cell with an optical fiber directly inserted into. Two different type of sound detector have been employed: electret microphones and optical MEMS-based microphone. As possible applications, we will describe the results obtained in the detection of formaldehyde (CH(2)O), a gas of great interest for industrial processes and environmental monitoring.

The detection and quantification of trace gases is of great interest in a wide range of applications such as environmental monitoring, industrial process control and medical diagnostics. In combination with quantum cascade lasers, photoacoustic spectroscopy offers the advantage of high sensitivity (parts per billion detection limits), compact set-up, fast time-response and simple optical alignment. We will report here on the design and fabrication of optoacoustic sensors based on two different cell configurations to detect nitric oxide and formaldehyde.

The stability of the elements of eleven transposon families (412, B 104, blood, 297, 1731, G, copia, mdg 4, hobo, jockey and I) has been compared by the Southern technique among individuals of a Drosophila line that has been subjected to 30 generations of sister sib matings. The 412, B104, blood, 297, 1731 and G elements appear stable. Heterochromatic copia and hobo elements and euchromatic I elements appear highly polymorphic. In addition, copia, mdg 4, jockey and I elements undergo an instability resulting in significant variations in relative intensity among autoradiographic bands. The extent of the polymorphisms detected strongly suggests de novo rearrangements of transposable elements.

In the standard protocol for quantum teleportation, one assumes that Bob is able to perform ideal operations on his qubit. Here, we analyze the case in which some of these operations are more reliable than others. Moreover, we consider the channel shared by Alice and Bob as non-maximally entangled. We propose a scheme for the determination of the coupling parameters in a chain of interacting spins. This requires only time-resolved measurements over a single particle, simple data post-processing and no state initialization or prior knowledge of the state of the chain. The protocol fits well into the context of quantum-dynamics characterization and is efficient even when the spin-chain is affected by general dissipative and dephasing channels. We demonstrate that perfect state transfer can be achieved using an engineered spin chain and clean local end-chain operations, without requiring the initialization of the state of the medium nor fine tuning of control-pulses. This considerably relaxes the prerequisites for obtaining reliable transfer of quantum information across interacting-spin systems. Plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition has been applied to the fabrication of high-quality SiO2/Si interfaces and to the functionalization of the silicon dioxide surfaces for organic thin film transistor applications. The advantage of the method herein reported resides in the possibility of activating the substrate, depositing and functionalizing high-quality SiO2 films in a single-run process, at low temperature. The structural properties of silicon dioxide samples have been studied by infrared spectroscopy, angle resolved and depth profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We find a coupling-strength configuration for a linear chain of N spins which gives rise to simultaneous multiple Bell states. We suggest a way such an interesting entanglement pattern can be used in order to distribute maximally entangled channels to remote locations and generate multipartite entanglement with a minimum-control approach. Our proposal thus provides a way to achieve the core resources in distributed information processing.
