This year marks the seven decades of the death of (1883-1951), Russian Orientalist and one of the translators of the Qur'an. His translation is one of the most famous translations of this holy book. This essay deals with Крачко́вский primarily as Arabist and Islamicist who published over 500 works, and one of the foremost names in Russian Oriental Studies. His studies of Arabic literature, both contemporary and classical, as well as Arabic history and geography served Крачко́вский as a background for his translation of the Qur'an done at the end of his life. His famous translation was published posthumously, in 1963. The edition was supported by the Russian Academy of sciences in Moscow.

A més, l’anàlisi general del MS 1784, l’edició i la traducció de part d’ell, l’elaboració d’un glossari dels remeis i un recull de les malalties mencionats permeten extreure dades valuoses per a contextualitzar aquesta obra anònima en la tradició mèdica ocular àrab., [ara] ملخص يحتوي المخطوط 1784 بـ Reserva de Biblioteca، بالــ CRAI ، بجامعة برشلونة ، عىل مل ّخص ط ّ يب متخ ّصص، بشكل بارز، يف أمراض العيون وعالجاتها. كتاب باإلضافة إىل ذلك، فإ ّن التحليل العام للمخطوط 1784، تحرير جزء منه، ترجمته إىل الكتالنية، وضع مشد لألدوية وقائمة لألمراض المذكورة يجعل من الممكن استخراج بيانات ق ّيمة، من أجل وضع سياق لهذا العمل المجهول يف تراث طب العيون العر ين., [eng] The manuscript 1784 of the CRAI’ Biblioteca de Reserva, University of Barcelona, contains a medical compendium specializing, preeminently, in eye diseases and their remedies. The economic historian Marlon Johnson observes that prior to the 19th century, [t]he interior delta of the Niger with its floodlands, river and creeks and the area of sand dunes and lakes between the delta proper and the Niger, together form a region which would seem to have met the necessary conditions for the heartland of a centralized state: easy communications by water; a surplus of foodstuffs beyond the needs of their producers; a position astride a major trade route; and a relatively d...

Баку (июнь–июль 2021 г.)., Article is devoted to arabographic historical and cultural monuments, concentrated in one of the largest repositories of these sources in the post–Soviet space the Institute of Manuscripts of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (Baku). The object of the study was Arabographic works of scientific content related to such sections as: grammar of the Arabic language, rhetoric, medicine and astronomy, the total number of which amounted to 434 sources. As a result of the study, a number of significant and most frequently rewritten medieval works were identified, which, apparently, were more in demand in the Muslim society of the East in a certain historical period. The conclusions were made as a result of a study of the above-mentioned storage fund conducted as part of the author's scientific trip to Baku (June-July 2021).

6. Orthography and Phonology in Vocalized Medieval Christian Arabic Gospel Manuscripts

Pre-modern vocalized Arabic manuscripts can reveal a great deal about a variety of linguistic features represented in each text. Recent work has demonstrated the potential that vocalized manuscripts have, specifically for revealing aspects of the phonology of the corpora including the Quran, Judaeo-Arabic, and later ‘Middle Arabic’ texts. Christian Arabic texts, however, have been less frequently studied in this manner. Blau’s grammar of the Christian Arabic of south Palestine in the 9th/10th centuries CE4 draws primarily on unvocalized manuscripts, and therefore the phonological details he provides are inferred primarily from consonantal orthographic patterns. While a few others have focused on Christian Arabic manuscripts from the medieval period,6 there has been little work that undertakes a phonological description of vocalized Christian manuscripts in a thorough and systematic way.

The Arabic and Fulfude manuscripts from Futa Jallon (Guinea) are an illustrative example – apart from their local characteristics – of the literature written in the areas of ancient Islamic Sub‑Saharan Africa. Here, the historian can find extensive chronicles, but also shorter historical narratives written in Arabic or in Fulfulde. They are closely tied to oral traditions and they serve the political and religious aims of the group to which the author belongs. But the historian can also rely on a wide set of documents, from which he draws many interesting conclusions, although these texts were not written to deliver an historical message to the generations to come. They include: letters, theoretical texts, poems dealing with the relations with colonisers, and even purely religious texts. In such a way, these internal sources, which remain underexploited, are a new frontier for African history and an essential complement to the external sources that scholars have so far brought into the foreground.

In 602 H./1206 C.E. al-Jazarī published in Diyarbakir, Southeast Anatolia, his Compendium of Ingenious Devices. The richly illustrated treatise describes mainly clocks and other pneumatic-hydraulic-mechanic automata. In his foreword the author mentions as motivation for the publication the desire of his sovereign to have a documentation of the marvellous but fragile devices that would survive in time. The study argues that al-Jazarī’s treatise balances between his practical description of how-to-make-it-work and the fulfilment of the ambition of the sponsor of the manuscript who presumably regarded the content and the illustrations as an object of prestige. The copious illustrations played an important role in the later reception of the technical treatise.

The Timbuktu manuscripts are a representative sample of West African manuscripts written in Arabic. Since 2000, they are at the center of digitization programs raising numerous scientific obstacles that are of interest to different professional communities. The digital archiving of West African manuscripts written in Arabic has clear advantages, it raises issues related to their nature and their own characteristics unknown because they are unexplored. There is a need to know their particularities, the sociohistorical contest that produced them, their current conditions (environment, means), their uses, the practices related to these resources and as many subjects which constitute the very soul of the documents and which make these documents historical witnesses of a civilizational area to bring out from the darkness. This research is part of the field of information and communication Science which is interdisciplinary. Indeed, the electronic archiving of manuscripts goes through their digitization raising issues related to documentary information and communication (description, classification, organization and management of information, mediation and access), computer science (scanning, image processing, compression, data storage, electronic management system). Beyond technical aspects, the electronic archiving of manuscripts raises questions, social issues whose analysis makes use of theories and paradigms relating to social science and humanities. The present research aims at highlighting the features to be taken into account in the programs intended to modernize manuscripts heritage institutions and document enhancement, to address the issues raised by their electronic archiving., Les manuscrits de Tombouctou constituent un échantillon représentatif des manuscrits ouest-africains en langue arabe.

В XVII в. The study of Arabic manuscript collections show us the dynamic of the development of the Muslim sciences of Daghestan. The Muslim intellectual history can be divided into the two parts. First stage is characterised by the close contacts of the daghestani Muslims with the educational centers of the Middle East. In this period there were spread in Daghestan such sciences like hadith and Sufism. In XVIIth century we can observe some transformation in educational system and Muslim scientific field. Since this period, such sciences as the Arabic grammar, logic, rhetoric and Muslim law have been widely developed in Dagestan. It is evidenced by the thematic characteristic of the Dagestan manuscript collections. The study of two collection one of them is in private possession of Gasanov Karimulla and another of Gitinomagomedov Osman-haji show us that the dogmatic and Sufism are represented by the Middle Eastern scholars. At the same time the original works written by the daghestani scholars in these two fields allow us to assume that the Muslim sciences reached its greatest prosperity at the end of the 19th century. Especially in this period we can see numerous original works of daghestani scholars in various genres. However the impulse of such growth has been done at the end of XVIIth - beginning of XVIIIth century due to the new system of Islamic educations as well as the widespread networks of Islamic schools., №1(44) (2020)

In Rome, the Istituto per l’Oriente houses the library belonging to one of the most important scholar of the last century, Carlo Alfonso Nallino who, during his life, collected a large amount of printed and lithographed books as well as a small number of manuscripts in Arabic. The Īqāẓ al-wasnān fī l-ʿamal bi-l-ḥadīṯ wa-l-Qurʾān by al-Sanūsī, the only manuscript copy identified so far, is part of this small collection. My intent is to present its description along with the description of other two manuscripts acquired by Nallino containing two works written by the same Sufi scholar, al-Salsabīl al-maʿīn fī l-ṭarāʾiq al-arbaʿīn and al-Manhal al-rāwī al-rāʾiq fī asānīd al-ʿulūm wa-uṣūl al-ṭarāʾiq.

Muslims in Ethiopia constitute a considerable part of the total population, but until few years ago, their literary tradition and cultural heritage have remained understudied. The present article aims to shed light on the field of Islamic literature in Ethiopia in the late Nineteenth and early Tewntieth century through the study of the manuscripts owned by Shaykh Ḥabīb, a renowned scholar and respected walī who lived in Wallo, in northeastern Ethiopia. The presence of Andalusi Sufi poems among the text gathered by this scholar will be analyzed so far., Project Islam in the Horn of Africa: a comparative literary approach, hosted by the University of Copenhagen

The Taḥrīr al-Majisṭī by Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī is known to have survived in several dozen manuscript copies in different parts of the world. At present, however, we do not have a full list of the preserved manuscripts —or any record that might serve as a basis for drawing up a list of this kind. For the first time, the present article gathers together information on more than a hundred Arabic manuscripts of the Taḥrīr al- Majisṭī, identified through an extensive search in manuscript-catalogues, collection reports and, when possible, by inspection of manuscript copies. Special importance has been given to clarifying the bibliographical situation of each manuscript, particularly concerning the printed catalogues. The article consists of four parts: 1. A brief introduction; 2. A description of the methodology; 3. The list of manuscripts; 4. Concluding remarks.

Abu Iskhaq Ibrahim B. Adham al-Balkhi is well known in Muslim Historiography as the famous mystic and ascetic who lived in Balkh region in the 8th century. The early sources portray him as a ruler’s son who gave up riches of the worldly life and devoted himself to the service of God. The most important of these sources are: “Tabaqat as-sufiya” by Abu ‘Abd ar-Rahman as-Sulami, “Hilyat al-awliya” by Abu Nu‘aym al-Isfahani, “Tabaqat as-sufiya” by Abu ‘Abdallah Ansari, “Ar-Risala fi-‘ilm at-tasawwuf” by Abu ’l-Qasim al-Qushayri, “Salwat al-‘arifin” by Abu Khalaf at-Tabari and “Rayhan al-haqa’iq” by Abu Bakr Muhammad al-Darbandi. It is especially important to trace the spiritual continuity of the early Sufi tradition: ad-Darbandi received the written permission ( al-ijaza ) from Abu Khalaf at-Tabari, who was a disciple of Abu’l-Qasim al-Qushayri. The later sources (Farid ad-Din ‘Attar’s “Tadhkirat al-awliya”, Maulana Rumi’s “Masnawi”, etc.) show Ibrahim B. Adham as a ruler who becomes a saint. The transformation of the image of the saint, who came from the dynasty of the rulers of Balkh, can be clearly traced in the miniatures of the Mughal School, resonating with the images of the “holy rulers” of the Mughal dynasty. The image of Ibrahim B. Adham infiltrated to India and Indonesia, where it acquired additional mythological features.

The Tomás Navarro Tomás library (CSIC, Madrid) holds thirty seven manuscripts of the Qur’an and of tafsīr literature, copied by Mudejars and Moriscos; eleven of them are translations into Aljamía. They had been hidden in a house of the Almonacid de la Sierra village (Aragon) with no more than 1.600 inhabitants in the 16th century. Through a careful analysis of these translations, we can state that, in spite of one exception, they exhibit a strong link between themselves as far as the copyists, the ornamentation, the paper or the textual kinship. These similarities enable us to surmise that they were all produced within a very short period, in the same area (probably in Almonacid de la Sierra itself), by a small group of copyists working with common textual sources.

Dating manuscripts is a difficult task – particularly when these are not expressly datemarked, but even when they are. Factors such as the existence of successive copies that continue and repeat established models and production methods make dating a challenging task. The present work forms part of a much broader, comprehensive, investigation on the material composition of dated and bound manuscripts from the School of arabic Studies– CSIC of Granada.

During the early modern period (fifteenth-eighteenth centuries), the oasis of Tuwāt in present-day southern Algeria became one of the most important centers of Islamic learning in the Sahara. The spread of scholarship across the oasis accompanied the formation of powerful Islamic legal institutions operating at a regional level. This article analyzes the work of these institutions by focusing on the practice of compromise settlements (ṣulḥ). Empirically, our research is based on the close examination of a series of comprehensive collections of casuistic jurisprudence (nawāzil) compiled by local scholars between 1750 and 1850. The extraordinary richness of the materials conserved in these collections allows us, on the one hand, to show how the ṣulḥ was integrated into judicial decision-making processes as a device to complement and support legal rulings (ḥukm). On the other hand, we seek to illustrate how litigation was embedded in social relations marked by tribal structures and decentralized political power.

International audience; Ibn al-Yāsamīn’s poem in algebra (d. 601/1204) is considered one of the most widelyspread mathematical texts in the Maghreb at the end of the Middle Ages. It has been the subject of thirteen comments among which we find that of Abū "U#mān Sa"īd b. Mu$ammad al-"Uqbānī (d. 811/1408). The latter was considered lost by specialists in the history of Arabic mathematics. But after investigations in private libraries, we found a copy of this commentary in a collection of astronomy and mathematics preserved in the Zaouia al-"U#maniyya of Tolga in Algeria. As it has been written by several scholars, this didactic text testifies to the diffusion of comments and abstracts in the teaching of mathematics in the Muslim West.; Resumen: El poema de Ibn al-Yāsamīn sobre el álgebra (m. 601/1204) se considera como uno de los textos matemáticos más difundidos en el Magreb a finales de la Edad Media.

One of the subjects Arabic astrologers dealt with in the medieval era was the animodar of conception, which used lunar cycles to determine gestation times and to verify the degree of an ascendant, in accordance with one of the principles of Pseudo-Ptolemy's Centiloquium. This paper investigates Ibn al-Kammād's treatise on the animodar of conception edited and translated from Arabic manuscript 939 at the Real Biblioteca del Monasterio, San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid. The special significance attached to the animodar by later astrologers had two consequences for Ibn al-Kammād's treatise. First, the treatise, which was initially one of several parts of a book, has arrived to us as a self-contained piece, probably because it was already regarded as such in medieval times. Second, the initial contents in Ibn al-Kammād's treatise gradually underwent a transformation due to the addition of a number of materials associated with the animodar. Keywords: Ibn al-Kammād, Ibn Hilāl, Pseudo-Ptolemy, Vettius Valens, periods of gestation, lunar cycles, ascendant, animodar of conception.

At the beginning of the Mamluk period, the Damascene historian Abū Šāma and some of his successors invented a new but somehow short-lived genre of chronicles and biographical dictionaries, focusing on contemporary events and persons. Together with Ibn Rāfiʿ, Ibn Kaṯīr, Ibn Ḥiğğī and Ibn Qāḍī Šuhba, they formed a group of scholars whose texts interacted with each other, one author pursuing the narrative of his predecessor. In this article, we analyze these intertextual relations through the concept of “family of texts”.

This article focuses on the writing styles employed by the Andalusi calligraphers specialised in the production of Quranic manuscripts, between the 5th/11th and the 6th/12th centuries. During this crucial period, the shape, aspect, and concept of the muṣḥaf underwent a profound transformation in the Iberian Peninsula. In particular, the notion of “Quranic script” became more fluid, elusive even, mainly owing to the introduction of Maġribī round scripts for transcribing the Sacred Book. This article aims to demonstrate that all the calligraphic traits found in Maġribī “Quranic” styles were ultimately derived from the scripts employed in coeval, non-Quranic manuscripts. Also presented here is a discussion of the activity of some Andalusi copyists of the period, their aesthetic models, their social status, and of the cultural context emerging from the material aspects and colophons of the manuscripts they produced.

The aim of this thesis is to bring to light the unknown figure of Ahmad al-Rabbât al-Halabî, a Syrian bookseller, who lived between the second half of the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century, to catalog and present his manuscripts and to investigate the users « readers » of this cultural archive: it can provide concrete answers to questions raised in the Arabic literature, the creation and circulation of texts. The research led to identify about 240 volumes, scattered around the world, from the initial library of al-Rabbât. The margins of these manuscripts contain a large number of reading certificates written by many generations of readers.

This contribution explores a peculiar kind of annotation in Arabic multiple-text manuscripts. These manuscripts were often compiled as a personal &lsquo, one-volume library&rsquo, containing copies and excerpts of a unique selection of texts. Further, they were often used for less guided writing activities. The owners left notes, lists and sometimes even sketches in the margins or on blank pages between the texts. Among these, lists of life dates of relatives are a valuable source for studies on domestic devotion. On the one hand, they give glimpses on the composition of households. How many people lived together and who were they? These lists inform us about names regardless of gender. On the other hand, the penning of these list is in itself a trace of a practice intricately tied to the familial and domestic spheres. These lists are usually the only place, in which the memory of those people is preserved.

International audience; The present subject occurred to me during my research about the role of the Internet in the discipline of New Testament textual criticism.2 If one is inter- ested in New Testament textual criticism and conducts research on the Internet wanting to know more about manuscripts, ancient versions, editions, etc., one will quickly find Islamic websites presenting topics on New Testament textual criticism. This fact, though it might be surprising to some, is actually related to a classical topic in Islamic debates against Christianity, the taḥrīf. To under- stand this unexpected meeting between a specialized field and a notion, which over time involved into polemics, it is first necessary to establish the definition of the notion and then its interesting historical development. Thereafter, we will analyze how taḥrīf is used in the digital age and interacts with New Testament textual criticism.

Ever since colonial times, West Africa Arabic manuscripts have been the object of ambiguous attention on the part of administrators, conservators and scholars. As a result, collections were first concealed or disclosed (depending on the predatory or protective nature of Western attentions), then targeted by modern scientific initiatives focused on bibliographic description, content analysis and preservation. A review of their accomplishments and shortcomings will help understand how many such projects often failed to meet – or even understand – the expectations of their intended and potential users. Or if they did meet such expectations, they misunderstood or underestimated the nature of the tools they employed and the rapidly evolving technological and cultural environment that nurtures and supports them. Only by understanding these evolving trends and realities, and therefore engaging information professionals equipped with the appropriate knowledge and skills to take advantage of them, will new initiatives to preserve and document West African Arabic manuscript heritage succeed in providing continuous and relevant access to its intellectual content and material culture., Desde la época colonial, los manuscritos arábigos conservados en África Oriental han sido objeto de una atención ambigua por parte de las administraciones, los conservadores y los investigadores.

As more efforts are performed to digitize Western Saharan manuscripts, for preserving the memory they represent, the need to be able to work on thesedigitized materials naturally grows. In this paper, we present the design of OMOS, an ontology describing Western Saharan manuscripts. The Arabic and Ajami manuscripts are one of the Nigeria’s literary and cultural heritage. The manuscripts certainly facilitate greater understanding on the past, present and future of Nigeria’s literary and scholarly tradition. The manuscripts, particularly, those written by Sokoto Jihad triumvirate i.e. Sheikh Usman bin Danfodiyo, Abdullahi bin Fodiyo and Muhammad Bello dwelt on religion, politics, economic, medicine etc. However, despite the immense importance of the manuscripts, a number of problems are bedeviling the efforts of preserving them. In view of this, the article discusses the nature of paper and ink formation and some of the problems confronting its preservation. It also examines the colonial insensitivity towards Islam/Arabic language. Equally, it points out the Northern Nigeria’s environmental condition as one of the major challenges in the preservation and conservation processes. The last segment discusses future prospect of the conservation and preservation activities of Arabic and Ajami manuscripts in the Northern Nigeria.

How can one make a manuscript live? This is the question which the manuscript centre created in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypt has to face. This centre is dedicated to the collection, preservation and restoration of Arabic manuscripts. Manuscripts are at the same time codices to be kept and as well as books to be read. They therefore have the peculiarity of concerning simultaneously the study of texts, reading, and the transmission of learning and needing conservation and preservation. The examination of the various ways manuscripts as objects are treated (microfilms, codices electronic scans) show how they are made available in varying ways. These different ways reveal different types of relations of text and thing, copies and originals, authentic versions and reproductions but also the multiple ontologies of the book as an object to be read manipulated and contemplated.
