A contraction sequence of a graph consists of iteratively merging two of its vertices until only one vertex remains. The recently introduced twin-width graph invariant is based on contraction sequences. More precisely, if one puts red edges between two vertices representing non-homogeneous subsets, the twin-width is the minimum integer $d$ such that a contraction sequence keeps red degree at most $d$. By changing the condition imposed on the trigraphs (i.e., graphs with some edges being red) and possibly slightly tweaking the notion of contractions, we show how to characterize the well-established bounded rank-width, tree-width, linear rank-width, path-width, and proper minor-closed classes by means of contraction sequences. As an application we give a transparent alternative proof of the celebrated Courcelle's theorem (actually of its generalization by Courcelle, Makowsky, and Rotics), that MSO$_2$ (resp. MSO$_1$) model checking on graphs with bounded tree-width (resp. bounded rank-width) is fixed-parameter tractable in the size of the input sentence. We then explore new avenues along the general theme of contraction sequences both in order to refine the landscape between bounded tree-width and bounded twin-width (via spanning twin-width) and to capture more general classes than bounded twin-width. To this end, we define an oriented version of twin-width, where appearing red edges are oriented away from the newly contracted vertex, and the mere red out-degree should remain bounded. Surprisingly, classes of bounded oriented twin-width coincide with those of bounded twin-width. Finally we examine, from an algorithmic standpoint, the concept of partial contraction sequences, where, instead of terminating on a single-vertex graph, the sequence ends when reaching a particular target class., Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures

In the classic TARGET SAT SELECTION problem, we are asked to minimise the number of nodes to activate so that, after the application of a certain propagation process, all nodes of the graph are active. Bazgan and Chopin [Discrete Optimization}, 14:170--182, 2014] introduced the opposite problem, named HARMLESS SET, in which they ask to maximise the number of nodes to activate such that not a single additional node is activated. In this paper we investigate how sparsity impacts the tractability of HARMLESS SET. Specifically, we answer two open questions posed by the aforementioned authors, namely a) whether the problem is FPT on planar graphs and b) whether it is FPT parametrised by treewidth. The first question can be answered in the positive using existing meta-theorems on sparse classes, and we further show that HARMLESS SET not only admits a polynomial kernel, but that it can be solved in subexponential time. We then answer the second question in the negative by showing that the problem is W[1]-hard when parametrised by a parameter that upper bounds treewidth.

Very recently, Thomass\'e, Trotignon and Vuskovic [WG 2014] have given an FPT algorithm for Weighted Independent Set in bull-free graphs parameterized by the weight of the solution, running in time $2^{O(k^5)} \cdot n^9$. In this article we improve this running time to $2^{O(k^2)} \cdot n^7$. As a byproduct, we also improve the previous Turing-kernel for this problem from $O(k^5)$ to $O(k^2)$. Furthermore, for the subclass of bull-free graphs without holes of length at most $2p-1$ for $p \geq 3$, we speed up the running time to $2^{O(k \cdot k^{\frac{1}{p-1}})} \cdot n^7$. As $p$ grows, this running time is asymptotically tight in terms of $k$, since we prove that for each integer $p \geq 3$, Weighted Independent Set cannot be solved in time $2^{o(k)} \cdot n^{O(1)}$ in the class of $\{bull,C_4,\ldots,C_{2p-1}\}$-free graphs unless the ETH fails., Comment: 15 pages

The tree-cut width of a graph is a graph parameter defined by Wollan [J. Comb. Theory, Ser. B, 110:47-66, 2015] with the help of tree-cut decompositions. In certain cases, tree-cut width appears to be more adequate than treewidth as an invariant that, when bounded, can accelerate the resolution of intractable problems. While designing algorithms for problems with bounded tree-cut width, it is important to have a parametrically tractable way to compute the exact value of this parameter or, at least, some constant approximation of it. In this paper we give a parameterized 2-approximation algorithm for the computation of tree-cut width; for an input $n$-vertex graph $G$ and an integer $w$, our algorithm either confirms that the tree-cut width of $G$ is more than $w$ or returns a tree-cut decomposition of $G$ certifying that its tree-cut width is at most $2w$, in time $2^{O(w^2\log w)} \cdot n^2$. Prior to this work, no constructive parameterized algorithms, even approximated ones, existed for computing the tree-cut width of a graph. The \emph{$k$-restricted edge-connectivity} of a graph $G$, denoted by $\lambda_k(G)$, is defined as the minimum size of an edge set whose removal leaves exactly two connected components each containing at least $k$ vertices. This graph invariant, which can be seen as a generalization of a minimum edge-cut, has been extensively studied from a combinatorial point of view. However, very little is known about the complexity of computing $\lambda_k(G)$. Very recently, in the parameterized complexity community the notion of \emph{good edge separation} of a graph has been defined, which happens to be essentially the same as the $k$-restricted edge-connectivity. Motivated by the relevance of this invariant from both combinatorial and algorithmic points of view, in this article we initiate a systematic study of its computational complexity, with special emphasis on its parameterized complexity for several choices of the parameters. For two integers $r, \ell \geq 0$, a graph $G = (V, E)$ is an $(r,\ell)$-graph if $V$ can be partitioned into $r$ independent sets and $\ell$ cliques. In the parameterized $(r,\ell)$-Vertex Deletion problem, given a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, one has to decide whether at most $k$ vertices can be removed from $G$ to obtain an $(r,\ell)$-graph. This problem is NP-hard if $r+\ell \geq 1$ and encompasses several relevant problems such as Vertex Cover and Odd Cycle Transversal. The parameterized complexity of $(r,\ell)$-Vertex Deletion was known for all values of $(r,\ell)$ except for $(2,1)$, $(1,2)$, and $(2,2)$. We prove that each of these three cases is FPT and, furthermore, solvable in single-exponential time, which is asymptotically optimal in terms of $k$. We consider as well the version of $(r,\ell)$-Vertex Deletion where the set of vertices to be removed has to induce an independent set, and provide also a parameterized complexity dichotomy for this problem., Comment: After the first version of this article appeared in arXiv, we learnt that Kolay and Panolan [abs/1504.08120] obtained simultaneously and independently some of the results of this article

For every graph $H$, there exists a polynomial-time algorithm deciding if a planar input graph $G$ can be contracted to~$H$. However, the degree of the polynomial depends on the size of $H$. In this paper, we identify a class of graphs $\cal C$ such that for every $H \in \cal C$, there exists an algorithm deciding in time $f(|V(H)|) \cdot |V(G)|^{\bigO{1}}$ whether a planar graph $G$ can be contracted to~$H$. (The function $f(\cdot)$ does not depend on $G$.) The class $\cal C$ is the closure of planar triangulated graphs under taking of contractions. In fact, we prove that a graph $H \in \cal C$ if and only if there exists a constant $c_H$ such that if the tree-width of a graph is at least $c_H$, it contains $H$ as a contraction. A proper circular-arc (PCA) model is a pair ${\cal M} = (C, \cal A)$ where $C$ is a circle and $\cal A$ is a family of inclusion-free arcs on $C$ in which no two arcs of $\cal A$ cover $C$. A PCA model $\cal U = (C,\cal A)$ is a $(c, \ell)$-CA model when $C$ has circumference $c$, all the arcs in $\cal A$ have length $\ell$, and all the extremes of the arcs in $\cal A$ are at a distance at least $1$. If $c \leq c'$ and $\ell \leq \ell'$ for every $(c', \ell')$-CA model equivalent (resp. isomorphic) to $\cal U$, then $\cal U$ is minimal (resp. minimum). In this article we prove that every PCA model is isomorphic to a minimum model. Our main tool is a new characterization of those PCA models that are equivalent to $(c,\ell)$-CA models, that allows us to conclude that $c$ and $\ell$ are integer when $\cal U$ is minimal. As a consequence, we obtain an $O(n^3)$ time and $O(n^2)$ space algorithm to solve the minimal representation problem, while we prove that the minimum representation problem is NP-complete., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures

Although, the Hamiltonicity of solid grid graphs are polynomial-time decidable, the complexity of the longest cycle problem in these graphs is still open. In this paper, by presenting a linear-time constant-factor approximation algorithm, we show that the longest cycle problem in solid grid graphs is in APX. More precisely, our algorithm finds a cycle of length at least $\frac{2n}{3}+1$ in 2-connected $n$-node solid grid graphs. Although there are very algorithms for embedding graphs on unbounded grids, only few results on embedding or drawing graphs on restricted grids has been published. In this work, we consider the problem of embedding paths and cycles on grid graphs. We give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of cycles of given length $k$ and paths of given length $k$ between two given vertices in $n$-vertex rectangular grid graphs and introduce two algorithms with running times O$(k)$ and O$(k^2)$ for finding respectively such cycles and paths. Also, we extend our results to $m\times n\times o$ 3D grids. Our method for finding cycle of length $k$ in rectangular grid graphs also introduces a linear-time algorithm for finding cycles of a given length $k$ in hamiltonian solid grid graphs.

Let $G$ be a finite undirected graph. A vertex {\em dominates} itself and all its neighbors in $G$. A vertex set $D$ is an {\em efficient dominating set} (\emph{e.d.}\ for short) of $G$ if every vertex of $G$ is dominated by exactly one vertex of $D$. The \emph{Efficient Domination} (ED) problem, which asks for the existence of an e.d.\ in $G$, is known to be \NP-complete even for very restricted graph classes such as for claw-free graphs, for chordal graphs and for $2P_3$-free graphs (and thus, for $P_7$-free graphs). We call a graph $F$ a {\em linear forest} if $F$ is cycle- and claw-free, i.e., its components are paths. Thus, the ED problem remains \NP-complete for $F$-free graphs, whenever $F$ is not a linear forest. Let WED denote the vertex-weighted version of the ED problem asking for an e.d. of minimum weight if one exists. In this paper, we show that WED is solvable in polynomial time for $(P_5+kP_2)$-free graphs for every fixed $k$, which solves an open problem, and, using modular decomposition, we improve known time bounds for WED on $(P_4+P_2)$-free graphs, $(P_6,S_{1,2,2})$-free graphs, and on $(2P_3,S_{1,2,2})$-free graphs and simplify proofs. For $F$-free graphs, the only remaining open case is WED on $P_6$-free graphs.
