However, not all adolescents who suffer cybervictimization experience suicidal ideation, suggesting the importance of investigating protective factors that might potentially buffer and decrease these thoughts of death. The present study focused on examining the buffering effects of core self-evaluation (CSE) in the relationship between cybervictimization and suicidal ideation among Spanish adolescents. A moderated model was tested in two studies with two independent samples and designs. In Study 1 (cross-sectional design), a total of 858 students (53% female and 46.4% male; Mage = 15.75, SD = 1.27) completed the measures. In Study 2 (four-month prospective design), the sample consisted of 835 students (54.1% female and 45.9% male, Mage = 13.71, SD = 1.31). Main results showed that CSE might play a differential moderating role in the relationship between cybervictimization and suicidal ideation in both studies. Our findings suggest that adolescents who reported cybervictimization and lower rates of CSE tended to show higher levels of suicidal ideation. A focus on adolescents' evaluations of themselves and their worthiness and competence (i.e., on CSE) may contribute to intervention efforts targeting to prevent suicide after cybervictimization. The implications of these findings for adolescents, educators, and school counselling practitioners are considered.

Also, they all were positively and significantly associated with subjective happiness, whereas perceived stress was negatively associated with happiness scores. Moreover, self-emotion appraisal, use of emotions and regulation of emotions accounted for a significant amount of variance in the prediction of satisfaction with life beyond the effects of sociodemographic variables and perceived stress. Conclusion: This study extends the specific contribution of EI facets in predicting subjective happiness, rather than EI as a unified construct, in a relatively large sample of Spanish teachers. La inteligencia emocional (IE) y las estrategias de regulación constituyen recursos personales relevantes para la prevención de los trastornos de conducta alimentaria (TCA). En concreto, las estrategias de regulación cognitivo emocional (ERCE) desadaptativas han mostrado vínculos positivos con criterios de TCA. Sin embargo, no existen estudios que analicen el potencial rol mediador de las ERCE en la relación entre IE y TCA. Nuestro objetivo fue analizar el papel mediador de las ERCE entre IE y TCA. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 516 adultos españoles entre población comunitaria y universitaria. Cumplimentaron una batería administrada de forma online que incluía medidas de IE, ERCE y sintomatología de TCA. Nuestros resultados mostraron que altos niveles de IE se asociaron positivamente con las ERCE adaptativas y negativamente con las ERCE desadaptativas y con síntomas de TCA. Adicionalmente, los análisis de mediación mostraron que las ERCE desadaptativas mediaron la relación entre la IE y los síntomas de TCA. Estos hallazgos sugieren que las personas con alta IE podrían informar menos sintomatología de los TCA, en parte, debido al menor uso de las ERCE desadaptativas. Finalmente, se discuten las implicaciones para evaluar y mejorar estos recursos psicológicos en los programas de prevención y tratamiento de los TCA.

El uso excesivo de redes sociales puede afectar el bienestar de los adolescentes. Investigaciones recientes encuentran relaciones significativas entre el uso problemático de las redes sociales (UPRS) y el desajuste psicológico. Este estudio propone analizar las diferencias por género en el porcentaje de riesgo alto de UPRS e indagar las relaciones con la inteligencia emocional (IE) en adolescentes. Participaron 597 adolescentes (58,8 % chicas, 45,2 % chicos), de 12 a 19 años. Los participantes completaron cuestionarios de IE (WLEIS) y de UPRS (BSMAS). Los resultados indican que las chicas tienen un porcentaje superior de UPRS (17,7 %) que los chicos (13,4 %). Adicionalmente, se observó que los chicos puntuaron significativamente más alto en las dimensiones de percepción intrapersonal, regulación emocional e IE global, mientras que las chicas tuvieron una percepción interpersonal más alta. Sin embargo, el análisis de correlaciones por género indicó que solo para las chicas las dimensiones de percepción intrapersonal, asimilación, regulación emocional e IE tuvo una correlación negativa y significativa con el UPRS. Los resultados sugieren que el porcentaje de alto riesgo de UPRS más elevado en las chicas podría relacionarse con los niveles más bajos en percepción intrapersonal, regulación emocional e IE global, lo que apunta a la necesidad de diseñar estrategias de prevención que atiendan a dichas diferencias de género.

The correlation analyses showed that the majority of EI facets were positively related to satisfaction with life and negatively with both types of violence. As was expected, bullying and cyberbullying victims and bully–victims scored lower in satisfaction with life and the majority of EI facets. Controlling for sex, age, and grade, self-emotion appraisal, use of emotions and regulation of emotion were the best predictors of life satisfaction in bully–victims of bullying and cyberbullying. Finally, we discuss the relevance of these findings for clinical and educational practice on EI seeking to promote subjective well-being among adolescents involved in bullying and cyberbullying.

However, current research has suggested that adolescents are in an increased risk for developing a problematic usage of these tools. Given the negative consequences for their health and well-being, it is necessary additional research to examine potential factors associated with this risk. The present study aimed at examining a risk profile of problematic Internet use, considering family (e.g. parental monitoring), behavioral (frequency of usage), and psychological (emotional intelligence abilities) factors. Participants were 2195 (45.9% male and 54.1% female) adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 (M = 14.6; SD = 1.65) from the south of Spain, who completed the Spanish versions of the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale and the Internet Addiction Test. Differences between problematic and non-problematic users were analyzed with a MANOVA test. Afterwards, a binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the predictive variables of a problematic Internet use profile among adolescents. Results show the following profile: lower parental monitoring outside of the home, higher frequency of use, being older but younger at the time of first use, along with higher other-emotion appraisal and lower facilitation and regulation of emotions predicted the profile of problematic Internet user. Our findings may contribute to the design of effective interventions for reducing the risk of adolescents’ problematic usage of digital technology and its associated negative psychosocial consequences., Las tecnologías digitales brindan numerosos beneficios para nuestra vida cotidiana. Sin embargo, la investigación actual sugiere que los adolescentes se encuentran en un mayor riesgo de desarrollar un uso problemático de dichas herramientas. Dadas las consecuencias negativas para su salud y bienestar, es necesaria investigación que examine factores de detección de este riesgo. El presente estudio pretende analizar un perfil de riesgo del uso problemático de Internet, en el que se contemplan aspectos familiares (ej. monitoreo parental), comportamentales (frecuencia de uso) y psicológicos (habilidades de inteligencia emocional). La muestra estaba compuesta por 2195 adolescentes (45.9% varones y 54.1% mujeres) de entre 12 y 19 años (M = 14.6; DE = 1.65) del sur de España, quienes completaron las versiones en español del Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale y el Internet Addiction Test. Se analizaron las diferencias entre adolescentes en riesgo de PIU y sin riesgo con un MANOVA. Posteriormente, se realizó un análisis de regresión logística para determinar las variables predictoras del perfil de adolescentes con uso problemático de Internet. Los resultados mostraron el siguiente perfil: un menor monitoreo parental de las actividades fuera de casa, mayor frecuencia de uso, mayor edad y menor edad de inicio de uso, junto con niveles más elevados de percepción interpersonal y menor facilitación y regulación emocional predecían el perfil de usuario problemático de Internet. Los hallazgos pueden contribuir al diseño de intervenciones efectivas para disminuir el riesgo de que los adolescentes desarrollen un uso problemático de las nuevas tecnologías digitales y sus posibles consecuencias psicosociales

Adolescents’ perception of their own emotional abilities has been related to psychological adjustment and well-being. However, there are still few studies focusing on specific emotional dimensions in relation to bullying and well-being in adolescence. This study analysed the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) facets, satisfaction with life, bullying and cyberbullying in adolescents. The sample consisted of 3520 high school students (51.5% females) aged between 12 and 18 years (M = 14.37; SD = 1.67). The correlation analyses showed that the majority of EI facets were positively related to satisfaction with life and negatively with both types of violence. As was expected, bullying and cyberbullying victims and bully–victims scored lower in satisfaction with life and the majority of EI facets. Controlling for sex, age, and grade, self-emotion appraisal, use of emotions and regulation of emotion were the best predictors of life satisfaction in bully–victims of bullying and cyberbullying. Finally, we discuss the relevance of these findings for clinical and educational practice on EI seeking to promote subjective well-being among adolescents involved in bullying and cyberbullying.

Little research has examined the specific behaviors of cyberaggression by gender, and the role of Internet addiction and the deficit in emotional intelligence in cyberaggression. Being addicted to the Internet and certain emotional deficits explain perpetration cyberaggression by gender. Classrooms are contexts where emotions are part of the learning process. Teachers’ emotional abilities are key to foster positive learning environments. How do emotional abilities help both teachers and students? How can emotional abilities be developed? What programs do already exist? This paper provides evidence and helpful guidelines for developing emotional intelligence programs with teachers., Las aulas son contextos donde las emociones forman parte del proceso de aprendizaje. Las habilidades emocionales del docente son claves para fomentar ambientes de aprendizaje positivo. Pero ¿Cómo ayudan al profesorado y al alumnado?, ¿Cómo podemos mejorar las habilidades emocionales?, ¿Qué programas existen? Este trabajo aporta evidencias y recomendaciones útiles para el desarrollo de programas de inteligencia emocional con docentes.

This research examines the relationship among emotional intelligence, workplace social support from colleagues and supervisors, and work engagement in a sample of 110 Spanish primary and secondary teachers. The results showed that emotional intelligence was not related to perceived support from colleagues or supervisors. However, both emotional intelligence and social support from colleagues and supervisors showed significant positive associations with teacher engagement. Moreover, moderation analyses showed that main effects of emotional intelligence and social support from colleagues—not support from supervisors—explained significant variance in teacher engagement. Finally, the interaction of both personal—emotional intelligence—and job—social support from colleagues and supervisors—resources added incremental variance to the explanation of teacher engagement. Overall, our findings underline that educational administrations should take efforts in designing emotional intelligence intervention programs for teachers as well as creating collaborative and supportive environments facilitating development of teacher engagement., Cette recherche explore les relations entre l’intelligence émotionnelle, le soutien organisationnel et social des camarades et des superviseurs, et l’engagement au travail sur un échantillon de 110 enseignants espagnols du primaire et du secondaire. Les résultats ont montré que l’intelligence émotionnelle n’est pas associée aux niveaux de soutien organisationnel et social des camarades et des superviseurs. Néanmoins, tant l’intelligence émotionnelle que le soutien organisationnel des camarades et des superviseurs ont été associés de manière positive et significative à l’engagement des enseignants. De plus, les analyses de modération ont montré que les effets principaux de l’intelligence émotionnelle et du soutien social des camarades ­­­­­– sans y inclure les superviseurs – expliquent la variance des niveaux d’engagement des enseignants. Finalement, l’interaction entre les deux ressources, celui personnel – l’intelligence émotionnelle­ – et celui professionnel – le soutien aussi bien de camarades que des superviseurs –, ajoute une variance incrémentale à l’explication des niveaux d’engagement. En général, nos résultats indiquent clairement que les autorités éducatives devraient entreprendre des efforts à la conception de programmes dans le domaine de l’intelligence émotionnelle pour les enseignants et elles devraient assurer des environnements de travail promouvant des conditions de travail positives et favorisant le développement de l’engagement parmi les enseignants., Esta pesquisa examina as relações entre inteligência emocional, apoio social organizacional de colegas e supervisores e engagement laboral numa mostra de 110 docentes espanhóis de primária e secundária. Os resultados mostraram que a inteligência emocional não se associou com os níveis de apoio social organizacional nem de colegas nem de supervisores. No entanto, tanto inteligência emocional como apoio organizacional de colegas e supervisores mostraram associações significativas e positivas com engagement docente. Ademais, as análises de moderação mostraram que os efeitos principais de inteligência emocional e apoio social de colegas — embora que não de supervisores — explicavam a variância dos níveis de engagement docente. Finalmente, a interação de ambos os recursos, pessoal — inteligência emocional — e trabalhista — apoio social tanto de colegas como de supervisores —, acrescentava variância incremental à explicação dos níveis de engagement. Em geral, nossos achados põem de manifesto que as administrações educativas deveriam dedicar esforços a desenhar programas de formação em inteligência emocional para os docentes e criar ambientes laborais que promovam condições laborais positivas e favoreçam o desenvolvimento de engagement entre os docentes., Esta investigación examina las relaciones entre inteligencia emocional, apoyo social organizacional de compañeros y supervisores y engagement laboral en una muestra de 110 docentes españoles de primaria y secundaria. Los resultados mostraron que la inteligencia emocional no se asoció con los niveles de apoyo social organizacional ni de compañeros ni de supervisores. Sin embargo, tanto inteligencia emocional como apoyo organizacional de compañeros y supervisores mostraron asociaciones significativas y positivas con engagement docente. Además, los análisis de moderación mostraron que los efectos principales de inteligencia emocional y apoyo social de compañeros —aunque no de supervisores— explicaban varianza de los niveles de engagement docente. Finalmente, la interacción de ambos recursos, personal —inteligencia emocional— y laboral —apoyo social tanto de compañeros como de supervisores—, añadía varianza incremental a la explicación de los niveles de engagement. En general, nuestros hallazgos ponen de manifiesto que las administraciones educativas deberían dedicar esfuerzos a diseñar programas de formación en inteligencia emocional para los docentes y crear ambientes laborales que promuevan condiciones laborales positivas y favorezcan el desarrollo de engagement entre los docentes.

Elucidating personal factors that may protect against the adverse psychological outcomes of cyberbullying victimisation might help guide more effective screening and school intervention. No studies have yet examined the role of emotional intelligence (EI) and gender in adolescent victims of cyberbullying and how these dimensions might interact in explaining cybervictimisation experiences. The main aim of this study was to examine the relationship between EI and cybervictimisation, and the interactive link involving EI skills and gender as predictors of cyberbullying victimisation in a sample of 1,645 Spanish adolescents (50.6% female), aged between 12 and 18 years. Regarding the prevalence of cybervictimisation, our results indicated that over 83.95% of the sample were considered non-cyber victims, while 16.05% experienced occasional or severe cyber victimisation. Additionally, findings indicated that deficits in EI and its dimensions were positively associated with cyber victimisation in both genders, but were stronger in females. Besides, a significant emotion regulation x gender association was found in explaining cyber victimisation experiences. While no interaction was found for males, for females the deficits of emotion regulation were significantly associated with greater victimisation. Our findings provide empirical support for theoretical work connecting EI skills, gender and cyber victimisation, suggesting emotion regulation skills might be considered as valuable resources, as well as the inclusion in new gender-tailored cyberation victimisation prevention programmes., Dilucidar los factores personales que protegen contra las consecuencias psicológicas de la cibervictimización podría ayudar a una detección e intervención escolar más eficaz. This study examined the mediating effects of affect on the relationship between core self-evaluations (CSE) and life satisfaction in people with intellectual disabilities. The participants comprised 134 people (79 men and 55 women from southern Spain) with intellectual disabilities. All participants completed the core self-evaluations scale (CSES), the positive and negative affect scale (PANAS), and the satisfaction with life scale (SWLS). The results showed that high scores on the CSE were associated with higher life satisfaction. Moreover, positive and negative affect partially mediated the relationship between CSE and life satisfaction. The final model also showed two significant paths from CSE through positive and negative affect to life satisfaction. We present the limitations of the study and discuss the implications of the results for enhancing life satisfaction in people with intellectual disabilities., Este estudio examina el efecto mediacional del afecto en la relación entre las autoevaluaciones centrales (CSE) y la satisfacción vital en personas con discapacidad intelectual. Ciento treinta y cuatro personas con discapacidad intelectual (79 hombres y 55 mujeres) del sur de España completaron la escala de autoevaluaciones centrales (CSES), la escala de afecto positivo y afecto negativo (PANAS), y la escala de satisfacción con la vida (SWLS). La investigación reveló que altos niveles de CSE se asociaban a una mayor satisfacción con la vida. Además, el afecto positivo medió parcialmente la relación entre CSE y satisfacción vital. El modelo final indicó una vía significativa mediante la cual las CSE afectan a la satisfacción vital a través del afecto positivo. Se consideran las limitaciones del estudio y se discuten las implicaciones de los resultados para la mejora de la satisfacción vital en personas con discapacidad intelectual.

Since Salovey and Mayer (1990) introduced the construct of emotional intelligence in the literature, several researchers have analysed the potential link of emotional abilities with individual well-being and subjective happiness. Emotional intelligence ¿defined as the ability to perceive, understand, process and regulate one's and others' emotions' is seen as a critical skill that would help adolescents to guide their thoughts and reflect on emotions in ways that could raise their levels of well-being. In addition, the conceptual similarities and differences between the field of positive psychology and the framework of emotional intelligence are discussed. Recent research findings, obtained using abilities measures (MSCEIT), are also presented, highlighting the correlates and the consequences of emotional abilities for positive youth development. In general, results show that emotional intelligence abilities are related to happiness, social functioning and well-being of children and adolescents. Further, educational implications are presented and specific guidelines informed by positive psychology and emotional intelligence offered in the context of a positive and emotional school-based approach. Finally, the authors underline the importance of developing positive character strengths and socio-emotional abilities in the educational context., Desde que Salovey y Mayer (1990) introdujera el constructo de inteligencia emocional en la literatura científica, varios investigadores han analizado el vínculo potencial de las habilidades emocionales sobre el bienestar individual y la felicidad subjetiva. La inteligencia emocional, definida como la habilidad para percibir, comprender, asimilar y regular las emociones propias y la de los demás, aparece como una destreza crítica que ayudaría a los adolescentes a guiar sus pensamientos y a reflexionar sobre sus emociones ayudándoles a mejorar sus niveles de bienestar. Por otro lado, se discuten las similitudes y diferencias conceptuales entre el campo de la psicología positiva y el de la inteligencia emocional. Se presentan datos recientes, utilizando las medidas de habilidad de inteligencia emocional (MSCEIT), en los que se ponen de manifiesto los correlatos y consecuencias de la inteligencia emocional para un desarrollo positivo durante la adolescencia. En general, los resultados demuestran que las habilidades emocionales se relacionan con la felicidad, el funcionamiento social y el bienestar de los niños y adolescentes. Asimismo, se discuten las implicaciones educativas y se presentan pautas específicas desde la Psicología Positiva y la Inteligencia Emocional para crear escuelas positivas y emocionalmente inteligentes. Finalmente, los autores subrayan la importancia de desarrollar fortalezas positivas y habilidades socioemocionales en el contexto educativo.

Un desafío fascinante para la escuela actual es educar a los alumnos tanto académicamente como emocionalmente. Este desafío está justificado por el número creciente de programas de prevención e intervención para jóvenes en España. Muchos de estos programas incluyen habilidades de Inteligencia Emocional (IE), pero carecen de un marco teórico y empírico. En este artículo, los autores describen los modelos actuales de IE. En especial, explican el modelo de Mayer y Salovey y los instrumentos desarrollados para medir la IE. Es el modelo con mayor apoyo empírico pero, paradójicamente, el más desconocido en el campo educativo español, y puede constituir un marco útil para los programas de IE en la escuela.

Emotional intelligence (EI) has attracted great interest in the field of education as a vehicle to improve the socioemotional development of students. The first publications about EI made a great amount of claims about the positive influence of emotional intelligence in the classroom. The only problem was that these claims were not coupled with empirical research which systematically showed, on the one hand, the predictive level of EI and, on the other hand, the potential role of EI in different areas of life. Recently, the effect of a high level of EI on people in different settings has started to be investigated. The main aim of this article is to examine the relevant empirical research in educational settings in order to collect the existing evidence on the influence of EI, evaluated by different instruments, in the personal, social and school functioning of students., La inteligencia emocional (IE) ha suscitado un gran interés en el ámbito educativo como una vía para mejorar el desarrollo socioemocional de los alumnos. Las primeras publicaciones que aparecieron realizaron multitud de afirmaciones sobre la influencia positiva de la inteligencia emocional en el aula. El único inconveniente fue que todas estas aseveraciones no estaban avaladas por datos empíricos contrastados que demostrasen, por un lado, el nivel predictivo de la IE y, por otro, el papel real de la IE en las distintas áreas vitales. Ha sido recientemente cuando se han investigado los efectos que una adecuada inteligencia emocional ejerce sobre las personas. El objetivo de este artículo es revisar los trabajos empíricos más relevantes realizados dentro del contexto educativo con la finalidad de recopilar las evidencias existentes sobre la influencia de la IE, evaluada mediante diferentes instrumentos, en el funcionamiento personal, social y escolar de los alumnos.

The present study examined the relationships between the use of cognitive emotion regulation strategies, physical-verbal aggression and depression in a sample of 248 adolescents. Specific emotion regulation strategies such as acceptance, rumination and catastrophizing explained significant variance in depression in adolescents. With respect to physical-verbal aggression, our results showed that the use of self-blame and rumination only predicted levels of aggression in boys but not girls. Regarding gender differences, girls tend to ruminate and to report more catastrophic thoughts than boys. Our findings suggest a profile of cognitive emotion regulation strategies related to physical-verbal aggression and depressive symptoms which might be taken into account in future socio-emotional learning programs for adolescents.
