That spring the Champion Fibre Company, later to become the Carolina Division, began operations under the leadership of Reuben B. Robertson. But Mr. Robertson had another reason to be a busy anrl happy man that year. For on June 97 occurred the second event, of personal joy to him. which would touch the liv s of Champions everywhere. In 1956 Champion used 360,000 paper cores for a total cost of $85,000. The cores and plugs that are necessary for paper rolls are so important to the business that Champion has a full order stored at the mill at all times. In this photograph, Jerry Bradley, of No. 11 machine winders, prepares to “load” a shaft. Cores are delivered by jitney to machines and stored in regular core stands. Champion started up the world’s largest paper machine for the second time in history January 31, 1947 at 10:45 P.M. with great success. In 1932, the No. 12 machine, installed in Canton, was the world's largest paper machine in operation. The No. 11 machine brought hundreds of jobs to Canton. Chestnut trees provided a double use for Champion who pioneered, and had a patent on, the practice of extracting tannic acid and then using the sulphate method for pulping the wood chips to make paper to make paper. Champion was at one time the largest producer of 25% chestnut extract.
