THE ASHEVILLE TIMES Monday, April 23, 1962 Section Two Road's A'Building Interstate Highway 40 under construction along the east-west route north of Canton will help correct what has for years been considered a hopeless traffic bottleneck on U. S. 19-23 in the town. Major highway improvements are also being made within the business section. This is an 1-40 overpass over Buckeye Cove road in the Thickety section just outside the town limits. Canton Is A Community Built Sturdily On Pape r By JAY HENSLEY CANTON - This is the town that was built on paper. Situated on the eastern rim of a dual-range wall of mountains that virtually surrounds Haywood County, it's first on the route from Asheville to the Great Smokies to the west. Its people are Champions, and from the surrounding forest- lands where their ancestors first found a livelihood comes the raw material that fashions the town's way of living today. The raw material is pulpwood and the product is fine papers. Mayor of the town Is Hazel W. Ramsey. George James is town manager. The board of aldermen consists of D. E. Morgan, Bill Stone and J. Patrick Greeley. Sam Reese is town clerk. They get together at 5 p. m. every second Tuesday in James' office on the second floor of the Town Hall to conduct the business of the municipality. From the window they can view the smoke-belching giant sprawled along the edge of the business district that makes Canton something more than just another mill town. Champion Papers, Inc., turns trees into fine papers and creates better living for many more than the 5,068 persons living within the town's corporate limits. It is Haywood County's largest industry. Before the advent of the paper mill in 1906, the town was barely a village in a county that was largely agricultural. This article of January 1959 describes the No. 20 Machine which was recently installed at Champion. The machine is two stories high and takes up 124,000 feet of floor space, increases production of paper by 43% and adds 175 new employees., Champion's New Giant Paper Machine Begins Operation Next Month Industry in Western North Carolina will take a great step forward next month with the startup of The Champion Paper and Fibre Company's gigantic new No. 20 Paper Machine at the Carolina Division mill. As the monstrous Fourdrin- ier starts to make history alongside the nine other machines at the Canton plant, it will provide forceful testimony to Champion's faith in the mountain area, the mountain people and the destiny of our state and our nation. This giant papermaking unit will be capable of operating at a speed of 2,000 feet per minute and will make a sheet of paper 230 inches wide. Thus this giant Fourdrinier machine could pour forth a mile of paper every three minutes in a sheet 230 inches wide. Actual operating speeds are expected to be 1500-1600 feet per minute, however. No. 20 Machine will Increase paper production at the Canton mill 250 to 300 tons per day, bringing the overall output to almost 100 tons every 24 hours—representing approximately a 43 percent increase in mill production. Approximately 175 new employees have joined the ranks of the 3000-member Carolina Champion production team to meet the added personnel requirements lor No. 20 Machine and to further increase the $17 million annual payroll of the Canton mUl by approximately $1 million- Champion began this mammoth expansion of its Carolina Division mill in 1956 ' 'n response to the increasing demand of customers for more paper." Early in August of 1956 Reuben B. Robertson, Sr„ the company's Board Chairman, announced the multimillion dollar three-year expansion after Champion management had for many years looked forward to its start. Initial drawing board work on the No. 20 Machine was begun by Champion as early as 1953. Beloit Iron Works, Beloit, Wisconsin, was builder of the paper machine. Careful inspection of the finished product is maintained constantly. Finished rolls of paper are converted to flat sheets on rotary cutters. All paper is both mechnical and hand counted. Any stacks containing substandard paper are sent to the sorting line for culling of defective sheets.

This giant machine, which stretches nearly the full length of the SlS.foot building in which it is housed, is capable of producing more than a mile of paper every three minutes in a sheet 230 inches wide. No. 20 Machine has increased paper and paperboard production at this mill to nearly 1,000 tons every 24 hours. The machine manufactures principally bond, tablet and mimeograph papers. No. 20 Machine towers 27,0 feet into the air at the press section ~nd 25.0 feet at the calender stacks. The hooded dryer section is of latest des1~n, incorporating features that assure high efficiency and uniformity of dry~ng of the fast-moving sheet of paper. The hood also provides improved workmg conditions in the areas surrounding the machine. It w-as in 1906 that Peter G. Tho111son arrived in North Carolina's Haywood County to survey the virgin forests of the Great Smoky Mountains. Champion's eventual decision to build a mill there, near the tiny mountain cove of Pigeon Ford, marked the begin­ning of the forest products industry in western North Carolina, and to some degree, of the New South. This story examines the impact of the company on the region, its economy, its folkways and its peo­ple- people like James A. Trantham, a man in comfortable equilibrium between two seem­ingly contradictory worlds. Trantham is a supervisor of ship­ment control at Champion's pulp and paper mill at Canton, North Carolina, and he lives in a 200-year­old house that served as a patriot's command post in a pivotal battle of the Revolutionary War. When he is not working at the mill, Jim Trantham builds exquisite musical instruments-fiddles, banjos, gui­tars, and dulcimers-from the wal­nut and native red spruce of the surrounding Great Smoky Moun­tains. Or, to put it more properly perhaps, modern civilization began with the birth of papermaking. The two are inseparable. Mankind learned to write (in a manner of speaking) many thousands of years ago. He used the things at hand: stones, flat bones, the walls of caves. In Egypt, two thousand years before the birth of Christ, he was using thin sections of a tough reed, papyrus, cemented together, to record his work. The British Museum today has an example thought to be more than 3000 years old. It is known as The Great Harris Papyrus and is in the form of a scroll 133 feet long by sixteen and three-quarters inches wide. Parchment and vellum made from the skins of anjmals, was probably used a thousand years and more before the beginning of the Christian Era, as were bamboo and silk. But it was not until the Divine Event in Bethlehem- more than a hundred years after- that paper as such was invented. This great discovery is generally credited to a Chinese court official, Ts'ai Lun. The year is lOS A.D.
