The reversible modulation of chirality has gained significant attention not only for fundamental stereochemical studies but also for numerous applications ranging from liquid crystals (LCs) to molecular motors and machines. This requires the construction of switchable molecules with (multiple) chiral elements in a highly enantioselective manner, which is often a significant synthetic challenge. Here, we show that the dimerization of an easily accessible enantiopure planar chiral ferrocene-indanone building block affords a multi-stimuli-responsive dimer (FcD) with pre-determined double bond geometry, helical chirality, and relative orientation of the two ferrocene motifs in high yield. This intrinsically planar chiral switch can not only undergo thermal or photochemical E/Z isomerization but can also be reversibly and quantitatively oxidized to both a monocationic and a dicationic state which is associated with significant changes in its (chir)optical properties. Specifically, FcD acts as a chiral dopant for cholesteric LCs with a helical twisting power (HTP) of 13 µm-1 which, upon oxidation, drops to near zero, resulting in an unprecedently large redox-tuning of the LC reflection color by up to 84 nm. Entanglement in a soft condensed matter system is enabled in the form of entangled disclination lines by using colloidal particles in nematic liquid crystals. These topological excitations are manifested as colloidal entanglement at equilibrium. How to further utilize nonequilibrium disclination lines to manipulate colloidal entanglement remains a nontrivial and challenging task. In this work, we use experiments and simulations to demonstrate the reconfigurations of nematic colloidal entanglement in light-driven spatiotemporal evolutions of disclination lines. Colloidal entanglement can sense subtle changes in the topological structures of disclination lines and realize chirality conversion. This conversion is manifested as the "domino effect" of the collective rotation of colloids in the disclination lines. By programming the topological patterns and the geometry of the disclination lines, colloidal entanglement can be assembled and split. More remarkably, a double-helix entangled structure can be formed by controlling the changes in the morphology of the disclination lines. Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are emerging organic pollutants due to their potential persistence, toxicity, and bioaccumulation. This study first characterized the levels and compositions of 19 LCMs in organisms in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), estimated their bioaccumulation and trophic transfer potential, and identified priority contaminants. LCMs were generally accumulated in organisms from sediment, and the LCM concentrations in all organisms ranged from 32.35 to 1367 ng/g lipid weight. The main LCMs in organisms were biphenyls and analogues (BAs) (76.6%), followed by cyanobiphenyls and analogues (CBAs) (15.1%), and the least were fluorinated biphenyls and analogues (FBAs) (11.2%). The most abundant LCM monomers of BAs, FBAs, and CBAs in LCMs in organisms were 1-(4-propylcyclohexyl)-4-vinylcyclohexane (15.1%), 1-ethoxy-2,3-difluoro-4-(4-(4-propylcyclohexyl) cyclohexyl) benzene (EDPBB, 10.1%), and 4'-propoxy-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (5.1%), respectively. The niche studies indicated that the PRE food web was composed of terrestrial-based diet and marine food chains. Most LCMs exhibited biodilution in the terrestrial-based diet and marine food chains, except for EDPBB and 4,4'-bis(4-propylcyclohexyl) biphenyl (BPCHB). The hydrophobicity, position of fluorine substitution of LCMs, and biological habits may be important factors affecting the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of LCMs. BPCHB, 1-(prop-1-enyl)-4-(4-propylcyclohexyl) cyclohexane, and EDPBB were characterized as priority contaminants. This study first reports the trophic transfer processes and mechanisms of LCMs and the biomonitoring in PRE.

Context: The study undertakes a comparative analysis of four distinct semi-fluorinated chiral Organic Active Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals (OAFLCs). The comparative analysis of the compounds is done by using various parameters, including thermodynamic, non-linear optical, electrical, atomic charge distribution, and atomic orientations. We use optimization algorithms to look at chemical reactivity, electrical properties, intermolecular interactions, and static hyperpolarizability. Sample 4 is the best choice for a wide range of display applications. This research contributes to understanding the nuanced properties of semi-fluorinated chiral OAFLCs and highlights Sample 4's potential for novel applications in display technology, owing to its superior stability and optimized properties. Wound healing concerns almost all bed-side related diseases. With our increasing comprehension of healing nature, the physical and chemical natures behind the wound microenvironment have been decoupled. Wound care demands timely screening and prompt diagnosis of wound complications such as infection and inflammation. Biosensor by the way of exhaustive collection, delivery, and analysis of data, becomes indispensable to arrive at an ideal healing upshot and controlling complications by capturing in-situ wound status. Electrochemical based sensors carry some potential unstable performance subjected to the electrical circuitry and power access and contamination. The colorimetric sensors are free from those concerns. We report that microsensors designed from O/W/O of capillary fluids can continuously monitor wound temperature, pH and glucose concentration. We combined three different types of microgels to encapsulate liquid crystals of cholesterol, nontoxic fuel litmus and two glucose-sensitizing enzymes. A smartphone applet was then developed to convert wound healing images to RGB of digitalizing data. The microgel dressing effectively demonstrates the local temperature change, pH and glucose levels of the wound in high resolution where a microgel is a 'pixel'. They are highly responsive, reversible and accurate. The fabrication of materials that can switch between circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals is both essential and challenging. Here, two new halogen-bonded fluorescent molecular photoswitches, namely, HB-switch 1 and HB-switch 2, containing α-cyano-substituted diarylethene compounds with different end groups were developed. Upon exposure to specific UV or visible light wavelengths, they exhibited controllable and reversible Z/E photoisomerization. When these switches were integrated into blue-phase liquid crystals (BPLCs), the temperature range of BP significantly expanded. Notably, the BP system incorporating HB-switch 1 exclusively achieved reversible polarization inversion of CPL signals under irradiation with specific UV/Visible light and during cooling/heating. The photo/thermal dual-response behavior of the CPL signals can be attributed to the phase transition from a high-symmetry 3D BP Icubic lattice to a low-symmetry 1D helical superstructure induced by the Z/E photoisomerization of HB-switch 1 and temperature changes. Cyclotriphosphazene (CP) is a cyclic inorganic compound with the chemical formula N 3 P 3 . This unique molecule consists of a six-membered ring composed of alternating nitrogen and phosphorus atoms, each bonded to two chlorine atoms. CP exhibits remarkable versatility and significance in the realm of materials chemistry due to its easy functionalization via facile nucleophilic substitution reactions in mild conditions as well as intriguing properties of resultant final CP-based molecules or polymers. CP has been served as an important building block for numerous functional materials. This review provides a general and broad overview of the synthesis of CP-based small molecules through nucleophilic substitution of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP), and their applications, including flame retardants, liquid crystals (LC), chemosensors, electronics, biomedical materials, and lubricants, have been summarized and discussed. Replicating the microstructural basis and the near 100% excitation energy transfer efficiency in naturally occurring light-harvesting complexes (LHCs) remains challenging in synthetic energy-harvesting devices. Biological photosynthesis regulates active ensembles of light-absorbing and funneling chlorophylls in proteins in response to fluctuating sunlight. Here, use of long-range liquid crystal (LC) ordering to tailor chain orientation and packing structure in liquid crystalline conjugated polymer (LCCP) layers for bio-mimicry of certain structural basis and light-harvesting properties of LHCs is reported. It is found that long-range orientational ordering in an LC phase of poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT) copolymer stabilizes a small fraction of randomly-oriented F8BT nanocrystals dispersed in an amorphous matrix of F8BT chains, resembling a self-doped host-guest system whereby excitation energy funneling and photoluminescence quantum efficiencies are enhanced significantly by triggering 3D donor-to-acceptor Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and dominant intrachain emission in the nano-crystal acceptor. Further, photoalignment of nematic F8BT layers is combined with LC orientational ordering to fabricate large-area-extended monodomains exhibiting >60% crystallinity and ≈20 nm-long interchain packing order. Remarkably, these monodomains demonstrate strong linearly polarized emission, whilst also promoting a new band-edge absorption species and an extra emissive interchain excited state as compared to the non-aligned films., (© 2024 The Author(s). Polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) have emerged as promising candidates for one-dimensional photonic lattices that enable precise tuning of the photonic band gap (PBG). This work systematically investigates the effect of polymer concentrations on the AC electric field-induced tuning of the PBG in PSCLCs, in so doing it explores a range of concentrations and provides new insights into how polymer concentration affects both the stabilization of cholesteric textures and the electro-optic response. We demonstrate that low polymer concentrations (≈3 wt. %) cause a blue shift in the short wavelength band edge, while high concentrations (≈10 wt. %) lead to a contraction and deterioration of the reflection band. Polarization optical microscopy was conducted to confirm the phase transition induced by the application of an electric field. The observations confirm that increased polymer concentration stabilizes the cholesteric texture. Particularly, the highly desired fingerprint texture was stabilized in a sample with 10 wt. % of the polymer, whereas it was unstable for lower polymer concentrations. Additionally, higher polymer concentrations also improved the dissymmetry factor and stability of the lasing emission, with the dissymmetry factor reaching the value of around 2 for samples with 10 wt. % of polymer additive. Our results provide valuable comprehension into the design of advanced PSCLC structures with tunable optical properties, enhancing device performance and paving the way for innovative photonic applications.

This work aims to determine how the nematic twist-bend phase (N TB ) of bismesogens containing two rigid parts of cyanobiphenyls connected with a linking chain containing n = 7, 9, and 11 methylene groups behaves in mixtures with structurally similar cyanobiphenyls nCB, n = 4-12, 14. The whole phase diagrams are presented for the CB7CB-nCB system. For the other systems, CB9CB-nCB and CB11CB-nCB, only curves corresponding to N TB -N phase transition are presented. Based on the temperature-concentration range of the existence of N TB phase, it was established that an increase in the alkyl chain length of CBnCB causes an increase in the stability of the N TB phase. But surprisingly, an increase in the alkyl chain length of nCB compounds does not change the slope of the N TB -N equilibrium line on phase diagrams. It is slightly bigger when the nCB compound has the same length of alkyl chain as the length of the linking group of a bismesogen. XRD studies were carried out for two mixtures.

Liquid crystals have been extensively used in various applications, such as optoelectronic devices, biomedical applications, sensors and biosensors, and packaging, among others. Liquid crystal polymers are one type of liquid crystal material, combining their intrinsic properties with polymeric flexibility for advanced applications in displays and smart materials. For instance, liquid crystal polymers can serve as drug nanocarriers, forming cubic or hexagonal mesophases, which can be tailored for controlled drug release. Further applications of liquid crystals and liquid crystal polymers include the preparation of membranes for separation processes, such as wastewater treatment. Furthermore, these materials can be used as ion-conducting membranes for fuel cells or lithium batteries due to their broad types of mesophases. This review aims to provide an overall explanation and classification of liquid crystals and liquid crystal polymers. Furthermore, the great potential of these materials relies on their broad range of applications, which are determined by their unique properties. Moreover, this study provides the latest advances in liquid crystal polymer-based membranes and their applications, focusing especially on fuel cells. Moreover, future directions in the applications of various liquid crystals are highlighted.

The curvature of elongated microscopic building blocks plays a crucial role on their self-assembly into orientationally ordered phases. While rod-like molecules form a handful of liquid crystal (LC) phases, curved or banana-shaped molecules show more than fifty phases, with fascinating physical properties, such as chirality or polarity. Despite the fundamental and technological importance of these so-called 'banana-shaped liquid crystals', little is known about their microscopic details at the single-molecule level. Curved colloidal liquid crystals-liquid crystals formed by curved colloidal rods-are excellent model systems to optically resolve the structure and dynamics of curved building blocks within these condensed phases. Recent advances in the synthesis of curved rod-like particles have unlocked the potential for studying-at the single-particle level-the intimate relationship between shape and phase symmetry, and even confirmed the stability of elusive LC phases. Further developments in this nascent field promise exciting findings, such as the first observation of the colloidal twist-bend nematic phase or the fabrication of functional materials with curvature-dependent properties. We consider an active nematic phase and use hydrodynamical equations of it to model the activity as an internal field. The interaction of this field with the nematic director in a confined geometry is included in the Hamiltonian of the system. Based on this model Hamiltonian and the standard field theoretical approach, the Casimir-like force induced between the boundaries of such a confined film is discussed. The force depends on the geometrical shape and the dynamical character of the constituents of our active phase, as well as the anchoring conditions. For homeotropically aligned rod-like particles which in principle tend to align along a planar flow field, extensile activity enhances the attraction present in a thin nematic film. As the film thickness increases the force reduces. Beyond a critical thickness, a planar flow field instantaneous to a bend distortion sets in. Near but below the threshold of this activity-induced instability, the force crosses zero and repulsively diverges right at the critical threshold of this so-called flow instability. For contractile rods, in the same geometry as above, the structure is stable and the Casimir-like force diminishes by an exponential factor as a function of the film thickness. On the other side for a planar director alignment, rod-like contractile particles can induce opposite shear flows at the boundaries creating a splay distortion for the director between the plates. In this configuration, we obtain the same universal pretransitional behavior for the force as above. Vice versa, for extensile rod-like particles in this geometry, the director fluctuations become massive and the Casimir-like force diminishes again by an exponential factor as the film thickness increases. The effect of the active field on thermal fluctuations of the director and the fluctuation-induced Casimir force per area is derived through a "semi"-dynamical approach as well. To make progress towards the development of a theory on the motion of inclusions in thin structured films and membranes, we here consider as an initial step a circular disk in a two-dimensional, uniaxially anisotropic fluid layer. We assume overdamped dynamics, incompressibility of the fluid, and global alignment of the axis of anisotropy. Motion within this layer is affected by additional linear friction with the environment, for instance, a supporting substrate. We investigate the induced flows in the fluid when the disk is translated parallel or perpendicular to the direction of anisotropy. Moreover, expressions for corresponding mobilities and resistance coefficients of the disk are derived. Our results are obtained within the framework of a perturbative expansion in the parameters that quantify the anisotropy of the fluid. Good agreement is found for moderate anisotropy when compared to associated results from finite-element simulations. At pronounced anisotropy, the induced flow fields are still predicted qualitatively correctly by the perturbative theory, although quantitative deviations arise. This paper develops a theory for anaphase in cells. After a brief description of microtubules, the mitotic spindle and the centrosome, a mathematical model for anaphase is introduced and developed in the context of the cell cytoplasm and liquid crystalline structures. Prophase, prometaphase and metaphase are then briefly described in order to focus on anaphase, which is the main study of this paper. The entities involved are modelled in terms of liquid crystal defects and microtubules are represented as defect flux lines. The mathematical techniques employed make extensive use of energy considerations based on the work that was developed by Dafermos (1970) from the classical Frank-Oseen nematic liquid crystal energy (Frank, 1958; Oseen, 1933). With regard to liquid crystal theory we introduce the concept of regions of influence for defects which it is believed have important implications beyond the subject of this paper. The results of this paper align with observed biochemical phenomena and are explored in application to HeLa cells and Caenorhabditis elegans. As part of electronic waste (e-waste), the fastest growing solid waste stream in the world, discarded liquid crystal displays (LCDs) contain substantial amounts of both valuable and potentially harmful metal, offering valuable opportunities for resource extraction but posing environmental threats. The present comprehensive study is an investigation into the bioleaching of indium from discarded LCD panels, with a particular focus on high pulp density shredded (Sh-LCDs) and powdered (P-LCDs) materials. This study involved an acidophilic consortium, with two pathways, namely the mixed sulfur-iron pathways and sulfur pathways, being explored to understand the bioleaching mechanisms. Indium bioleaching efficiencies through the mixed sulfur-iron pathway were approximately 60% and 100% for Sh-LCDs and P-LCDs, respectively. Three mechanisms were involved in the extraction of indium from LCD samples: acidolysis, complexolysis, and redoxolysis. The microbial community adapted to a pulp density of 32.5 g/L was streak-plated and it was revealed that sulfur-oxizing bacteria dominated, resulting in the minimum indium extraction of 10% and 55% for both Sh-LCDs and P-LCDs samples, respectively. It was generally accepted that ferric ions as oxidants were effective for indium bioleaching from both the Sh-LCDs and P-LCDs. This implies that the cooperation or interaction within the microbial community used in the bioleaching process had a beneficial impact, enhancing the overall effectiveness of extracting indium from LCD panels. The adapted consortium utilizes a combination of microbial transformation, efflux systems, and chelation through extracellular substances to detoxify heavy metals. The adapted microbial community demonstrated better indium leaching efficiency (50%) compared to the non-adapted microbial community which achieved a maximum of 29% and 5% respectively from Sh-LCDs and P-LCDs at a pulp density of 32.5 g/L. The advantages of an adapted microbial community for indium leaching efficiency, attributing this advantage to factors such as high metabolic activity and improved tolerance to heavy metals. Additionally, the protective role of the biofilm formed by the adapted microbial community is particularly noteworthy, as it contributes to the community's resilience in the presence of inhibitory substances. Self-assembly of chromophoric systems is a prerequisite to create well-ordered, processable nanomaterials with multiple functionalities. In the past two decades, the field of functional organic materials has primarily focused on systems featuring only one type of dye/π-conjugated unit. Consequently, many reports with mechanistic insights on the self-assembly of the dyes featuring different molecular packing have been reported. Subsequently, we have witnessed several attempts to organize the multi-chromophoric systems in solution and solid-state via different approaches using self-assembly as a tool. Incorporation of more than one dye is important in creating materials with tuneable optoelectronic properties. Consequently, self-assembly of more than one chromophoric systems have been investigated to some extent. This review aims to discuss the self-assembled materials derived from discrete π-conjugated systems comprising more than one dye units connected through covalent bonding (multi-chromophoric systems). Molecular design of various multi-chromophoric systems leading to the formation of crystals, liquid crystals and supramolecular polymers have been correlated with corresponding properties. Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are biphenyl- or cyclohexane-based organic chemicals used in electronic digital displays, and several of them possess bioaccumulative and toxic properties. Little is known about their occurrence in indoor dust from the United States. We analyzed 60 LCMs in 104 residential indoor dust samples collected from 16 states across the United States. Forty-seven of 60 LCMs were detected in dust samples at a median ∑LCM concentration of 402 ng/g (range: not detected to 4300 ng/g). Trans-4-propylcyclohexyl trans,trans-4'-propylbicyclohexyl-4-carboxylate (MPVBC) and (trans,trans)-4-fluorophenyl 4'-pentyl-[1,1'-bi(cyclohexane)]-4-carboxylate (FPeBC) were frequently detected in dust samples. We investigated potential sources of LCMs in dust by determining concentrations and profiles of these chemicals in smartphone screens, desktop and laptop computer monitors, and displays of other electronic devices and found that profiles in smartphones matched closely with those found in dust. The calculated median daily intake of ∑LCM through dust ingestion was 1.19 ng/kg bw/d for children, whereas that through dermal absorption was 0.18 ng/kg bw/d for adults in the United States.

The dynamic heterogeneities occurring just before the transition to the glassy phase have been named as the cause of amorphization in supercooled systems. Numerous studies conducted so far have confirmed this hypothesis, and based on it, a widely accepted solution to the puzzle of glass transition has been developed. This report focuses on verifying the existence of a strong pretransitional anomaly near the glass transition Tg. For this purpose, supercooled liquid-crystalline systems with a strong rod-like structure were selected. Based on the obtained experimental data, we demonstrate in this article that the previously postulated dynamic heterogeneities exhibit a critical characteristic, meaning a strong pretransitional anomaly can be observed with the described critical exponent α=0.5. Due to this property, it can be concluded that these heterogeneities are critical fluctuations, and consequently, the transition to the glassy state can be described based on the theory of critical phenomena. To measure the pretransitional anomaly near Tg in supercooled liquid-crystalline systems, broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and nonlinear dielectric effect (NDE) methods were applied. The exponent α provides insight into the nature and intensity of critical fluctuations in the system. A value of α=0.5 suggests that the fluctuations become increasingly intense as the system approaches the critical point, contributing to the divergence in specific heat. Understanding the role of critical fluctuations in the glass transition is crucial for innovating and improving a wide range of materials for energy storage, materials design, biomedical applications, food preservation, and environmental sustainability. These advancements can lead to materials with superior properties, optimized manufacturing processes, and applications that meet the demands of modern technology and sustainability challenges.

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are emerging contaminants characterized by their persistence, bioaccumulation potential, and toxicity. They have been observed in several environmental matrices associated with electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling activities, particularly in China. However, there is currently no information on the pollution caused by LCMs in other developing countries, such as Pakistan. In this study, we collected soil samples (n = 59) from e-waste dismantling areas with different functions in Pakistan for quantification analysis of 52 target LCMs. Thirty out of 52 LCMs were detected in the soil samples, with the concentrations ranging from 2.14 to 191 ng/g (median: 16.3 ng/g), suggesting widespread contamination by these emerging contaminants. Fluorinated LCMs (median: 10.4 ng/g, range: 1.27-116 ng/g) were frequently detected and their levels were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those of non-fluorinated LCMs (median: 6.11 ng/g, range: not detected (ND)-76.7 ng/g). The concentrations and profiles of the observed LCMs in the soil samples from the four functional areas varied. The informal dismantling of e-waste poses a potential exposure risk to adults and infants, with median estimated daily intake (EDI, ng/kg bw/day) values of 0.0420 and 0.1013, respectively. Calculation of the hazard quotient (HQ) suggested that some LCMs (e.g., ETFMBC (1.374) and EDFPB (1.257)) may pose potential health risks to occupational workers and their families. Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy in terms of trueness and precision of 3 different liquid crystal display (LCD) printers with different cost levels., Methods: Three LCD 3-dimensional (3D) printers were categorized into tiers 1-3 on the basis of cost level. The printers' accuracies were assessed in terms of trueness and precision. For this research, 10 standard tessellation language (STL) reference files were used. For trueness, each STL file was printed once with each 3D printer. For precision, 1 randomly chosen STL file was printed 10 times with each 3D printer. After that, a model scanner was used to scan the models, and STL comparisons were performed using reverse engineering software. For the measurements regarding trueness and precision, the Friedman test was used., Results: There were significant differences among the 3 printers (P <0.05). The trueness and precision error were lower in models printed with a tier-1 printer than in the remaining 3D printers (P <0.05). The tier-2 and -3 printers presented very similar performance., Conclusions: LCD 3D printers can be accurately used in orthodontics for model printing depending on the specific orthodontic use. Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are identified as emerging organic contaminations with largely unexplored health impacts. To elucidate their toxic mechanisms, support the establishment of environmental discharge and management standards, and promote effective LCMs control, this study constructs a database covering 20,545 potential targets of 1431 LCMs, highlighting 9 key toxic target proteins that disrupt the nervous system and metabolic functions. GO and KEGG pathway analysis suggests LCMs severely affect nervous system, linked to neurodegenerative diseases and mental health disorders, with toxicity variations driven by electronegativity and structural complexity of LCM terminal groups. To achieve tiered control of LCMs, construct toxicity risk control lists for 9 key toxic target proteins, suitable for the graded control of LCMs, management recommendations are provided based on toxicity levels. These lists were validated for reliability and offer reliable toxicity predictions for LCMs. SHAP analysis points to electronic properties, molecular shape, and structural characteristics of LCMs as primary health impact factors. Five series of cyanostilbene-based rod-like liquid crystals containing one different terminal atom (H, F, Cl, Br and I) at one end and one terminal aliphatic chain with different numbers of carbon atoms at the other end were reported by Suzuki coupling and Knoevenagel reactions. The influence of terminal halogen atoms and terminal chain length on the self-assembly, AIE behavior, temperature-dependent emission and mechanochromism behavior was explored by POM, DSC, XRD, SEM, absorption spectra and emission spectra. All the compounds are enantiotropic liquid crystals. The lowest non-halogen substituted homologue exhibited solo N phase, but the higher non-halogen substituted homologues exhibited mesogenic transition from SmA phase to N phase upon rising temperature. All the lowest halogen substituted homologues exhibited mesogenic transition from SmA phase to N phase upon rising temperature and all the higher homologues only exhibited SmA. The distinct mesogenic phase transition could be attributed to the intermolecular interaction produced by terminal halogen and the rigidity of the terminal aliphatic chain. All the non-halogen substituted compounds and halogen substituted compounds with smaller terminal halogen atom (F, Cl and Br atom) exhibited AIE behaviors, whereas the iodinated compounds exhibited extremely weak emission in solution and aggregated states due to the heavy atoms effect. These compounds also exhibited distinct solid-state emission with blue or cyan fluorescence, which could be quenched by increasing temperature. The reversible mechanochromism behavior was also achieved in all the compounds. The mechanical force induced quench in emission in non-halogen substituted compounds and halogen substituted compounds with smaller terminal halogen atom (F, Cl and Br atom), whereas enhancement in iodinated compounds. The reversible mechanochromism behavior endowed these compounds with potential applications in rewritable paper and anti-counterfeiting. The interesting properties in these liquid crystals would be attributed to the balance of the halogen-halogen interactions, heavy atom effect, steric-hindrance effect and chain length. Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are a class of emerging contaminants of concern predicted to be persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT). Being one of the key components in liquid crystal displays (LCDs), the disposal of LCD containing devices is closely related to the emission of LCMs into the environment. LCMs have been detected in a wide range of environmental matrices including dust, sediment, soil, sewage leachate, and air, with concentration ranges between 17 and 2121 ng/g found in indoor residential dust. Furthermore, they have been detected on human skin at concentrations up to 2,071,000 ng/m 2 and in the serum of e-waste dismantling workers, at concentrations ranging from 3.9 to 276 ng/mL. Despite the far-reaching contamination of these compounds, there is limited knowledge of their environmental behaviour, fate, and toxicity. Model predictions show that 297 of 330 LCMs are persistent and bioaccumulative compounds, with many more indicated as being toxic. However, current knowledge of their physicochemical and PBT properties is largely restricted to theoretical predictions and limited to a small number of experimental toxicity studies. As an emerging class of contaminants of concern, a lack of standardisation between studies was identified as a key challenge to advancing the state of knowledge of these compounds. Not only are harmonised analytical methods for their determination and quantification in environmental media yet to be established, but there is also a need for a universal abbreviation system. To further harmonise the reporting of data on LCMs we propose reporting the sum concentration of ten priority LCMs, selected on the basis detection frequency, toxicity and potential for human exposure. Fluorinated liquid-crystal monomers (FLCMs), a new class of potential persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) emerging pollutants, are extensively utilized in the display panel of various electronic devices. These compounds have been found in various environmental matrixes and dietary. Our previous studies have documented their ubiquitous occurrence in high fat foodstuffs. Infants, a vulnerable group, are more susceptible to the impacts of these pollutants compared to adults. Herein, we provided an assessment of the health risks posed by FLCMs to infants, focusing on their exposure through infant formula. The presence of FLCMs was detected in all infant formulas, with median concentration of 16.5 ng/g dry weight (dw) and the 95th percentile concentration of 65.7 ng/g dw. The most prevalent pollutant in these formulas was 2-fluoro-4-[4'-propyl-1,1'-bi(cyclohexyl)-4-yl] phenyl trifluoromethyl ether (FPrBP), with median and a 95th percentile concentration of 12.2 ng/g dw and 23.8 ng/g dw, accounting for 55.2% to the total FLCMs. Infants aged 0-6 months had the highest estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of FLCMs, with the EDI median of 267 ng/kg bw/day. FPrBP and 4-[trans-4-(trans-4-Propylcyclohexyl) cyclohexyl]-1-trifluoromethoxybenzene (PCTB) together made up 83.3% of the total EDIs in median exposure scenario of 0-6 months infant. The highest EDI value was 1.30 × 10 3  ng/kg bw/day, 77.1% of which was attributed to a combination of FPrBP, 4″-ethyl-2'-fluoro-4-propyl-1,1':4',1″-terphenyl (EFPT), 2-[4'-[difluoro(3,4,5-trifluoro-2-methyl-phenoxy)methyl]-3',5'-difluoro-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl]-5-ethyl-tetrahydro-pyran (DTMPMDP), 4-[Difluoro-(3,4,5-trifluoro-2-methyl-phenoxy)-methyl]-3,5-difluoro-4'-propyl-1,1-biphenyl (DTMPMDB), 2,3-difluoro-1-methyl-4-[(trans, trans)-4'-pentyl[1,1'-bicyclohexyl]-4-yl]benzene (DMPBB) and PCTB. It's worth noting that FLCMs have higher exposure risk. The dynamic nature of calamitic liquid crystals is exploited to perform isothermal phase transitions driven by dynamic covalent chemistry. For this purpose, nematic (N) arrays based on aldehyde 1 were treated with different amines (A-E) in an on-surface process, which resulted in different isothermal phase transitions. These phase transformations were caused by in situ imination reactions and are dependent on the nature of the added amine. Transitions from the N to crystal (1A, 1E), isotropic (1B), and smectic (Sm) (1C, 1D) phases were achieved, while the resulting materials feature thermotropic liquid crystal behavior. A sequential transformation from the N 1 to the Sm 1C and then to the N 1B was achieved by coupling an imination to a transimination processes and adjusting the temperature. All of these processes were well characterized by microscopic, spectroscopic, and X-ray techniques, unlocking not only the constitutional but also the structural aspects of the phase transitions. This work provides new insights into designing constitutionally and structurally adaptable liquid crystal systems, paving the way toward the conception of programable evolutive pathways and adaptive materials., (© 2024 The Authors. Enantioseparation of nineteen liquid crystalline racemic mixtures obtained based on (R,S)-2-octanol was studied in reversed-phase mode on an amylose tris(3-chloro-5-methylphenylcarbamate) (ReproSil Chiral-MIG) and a cellulose tris(3,5-dichlorophenylcarbamate) (ReproSil Chiral-MIC). These polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phase (CSP) columns for High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) were highly effective in recognizing isomers of minor structural differences. The mobile phase (MP), which consists of acetonitrile (ACN)/water (H 2 O) at different volume ratios, was used. The mobile phases were pumped at a flow rate of 0.3, 0.5, or 1 mL·min -1 with a column temperature of 25 °C, using a UV detector at 254 nm. The order of the elution was also determined. The chromatographic parameters, such as resolution (R s ), selectivity (α), and the number of theoretical plates, i.e., column efficiency (N), were determined. The polysaccharide-based CSP columns have unique advantages in separation technology, and this study has shown the potential usefulness of the CSP columns in separating liquid crystalline racemic mixtures belonging to the same homologous series.

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) comprise a class of organic pollutants that have garnered considerable attention because of their dioxin-like toxicity (i.e., modulation of genes) and presence in various environments. However, limited information about the identities, occurrence, and distribution of LCMs has highlighted an urgent need for a high-throughput and sensitive analytical method. In this study, we developed and validated a rapid, simple, sensitive method that involves minimal solvent consumption. The method was applied for the simultaneous detection and identification of 78 LCMs in atmospheric total suspended particulate samples (d ae  < 100 μm) using gas chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. The results showed high degrees of linearity with correlation coefficients >0.995 in the concentration range of 5.0-500 ng/mL. The instrumental detection limits ranged from 0.7 to 5.3 pg, and the method detection limits ranged from 0.1 to 0.9 pg/m 3 . The accuracy of the method was between 70 % and 130 % for most analytes, and the relative standard deviations of six replicates were <15 % at three levels of spiking (10, 50, and 200 ng/mL). The developed analytical method was applied to analyze real air particulate samples from Beijing, China. Overall, 45 LCMs ranged from 65.5 to 145.7 pg/m 3 , with a mean concentration of 92.5 pg/m 3 . Among them, (trans,trans)-4-propyl-4'-ethenyl-1,1'-bicyclohexane (PVB) was the most abundant, with an average concentration of 33.6 pg/m 3 . The total estimated daily intakes of LCMs for adults and children were 15.6 and 46.6 pg/kg bw/day, respectively. Accordingly, the method described herein is suitable for quantifying LCMs in atmospheric particulate samples. Photoresponsive liquid crystals are promising materials for sunlight-driven smart windows, which can automatically change their optical states in response to sunlight and control energy flow between the inside and outside of a building. Herein, liquid-crystalline systems are developed that show a transparent-scattering transition upon irradiation with sunlight in a wide temperature range. Push-pull azobenzenes with axial chirality have been newly developed as photochromic chiral dopants to allow changes in mesostructures of liquid crystals in response to sunlight. To realize optical switching, photochromic and photoinert chiral compounds with opposite handedness of helical twisting are doped in liquid crystals. This liquid crystalline sample with a compensated nematic phase is transparent in its initial state. Upon irradiation with sunlight, this sample transforms to a scattering state due to the formation of helical mesostructures along with photoisomerization of azobenzene moieties and the change in the helical twisting power. After the cease of irradiation, the sample reverts to the transparent state through thermal back isomerization of azobenzene moieties. This system significantly improves the operating temperature range of sunlight-driven smart windows based on liquid crystals: the transparent-scattering transition is observed at 4-42 °C. The present mechanism allows development of autonomous and wireless smart windows adaptable to various environments.

Among the intriguing bicontinuous self-assembled structures, the gyroid cubic is the most ubiquitous. It is found in block and star polymers, surfactants with or without solvent, in thermotropic liquid crystals with end- or side-chains, and in biosystems providing structural color and modelling cell mitosis. It contains two interpenetrating networks of opposite chirality and is thus achiral if, as usual, the content of the two nets is the same. However, we now find that this is not the case for strongly chiral compounds. While achiral molecules follow the opposite twists of nets 1 and 2, molecules with a chiral center in their rod-like core fail to follow the 70° twist between junctions in net 2 and instead wind against it by -110° to still match the junction orientation. The metastable chiral gyroid is a high-entropy high-heat-capacity mesophase. The homochirality of its nets makes the CD signal of the thienofluorenone compounds close to that in the stable I23 phase with 3 isochiral nets., (© 2024 The Authors. The syntheses and characterisation of the 4-[{[4-({n-[4-(4-cyanophenyl)phenyl]-n-yl}oxy)phenyl]-methylidene}amino]phenyl-4-alkoxybenzoates (CBnOIBeOm) are reported with n=8 and 10 and m=1-10. The two series display fascinating liquid crystal polymorphism. All twenty reported homologues display an enantiotropic nematic (N) phase at high temperature. When the length of the spacer (n) is greater than that of the terminal chain (m), the twist-bend nematic (N TB ) phase is observed at temperatures below the N phase. As the length of the terminal chain is increased and extends beyond the length of the spacer up to three smectic phases are observed on cooling the N phase. One of these smectic phases has been assigned as the rare twist-bend smectic C subphase, the SmC TB-α phase. The rapid advancement of prevailing communication/sensing technologies necessitates cost-effective millimeter-wave arrays equipped with a massive number of phase-shifting cells to perform complicated beamforming tasks. Conventional approaches employing semiconductor switch/varactor components or tunable materials encounter obstacles such as quantization loss, high cost, high complexity, and limited adaptability for realizing large-scale arrays. Here, a low-cost, ultrathin, fast-response, and large-scale solution relying on metasurface concepts combined together with liquid crystal (LC) materials requiring a layer thickness of only 5 µm is reported. Rather than immersing resonant structures in LCs, a joint material-circuit-based strategy is devised, via integrating deep-subwavelength-thick LCs into slow-wave structures, to achieve constitutive metacells with continuous phase shifting and stable reflectivity. An LC-facilitated reconfigurable metasurface sub-system containing more than 2300 metacells is realized with its unprecedented comprehensive wavefront manipulation capacity validated through various beamforming functions, including beam focusing/steering, reconfigurable vortex beams, and tunable holograms, demonstrating a milli-second-level function-switching speed. The proposed methodology offers a paradigm shift for modulating electromagnetic waves in a non-resonating broadband fashion with fast-response and low-cost properties by exploiting functionalized LC-enabled metasurfaces. Microtubules and catalytic motor proteins underlie the microscale actuation of living materials, and they have been used in reconstituted systems to harness chemical energy to drive new states of organization of soft matter (e.g., liquid crystals (LCs)). Such materials, however, are fragile and challenging to translate to technological contexts. Rapid (sub-second) and reversible changes in the orientations of LCs at room temperature using reactions between gaseous hydrogen and oxygen that are catalyzed by Pd/Au surfaces are reported. Surface chemical analysis and computational chemistry studies confirm that dissociative adsorption of H 2 on the Pd/Au films reduces preadsorbed O and generates 1 ML of adsorbed H, driving nitrile-containing LCs from a perpendicular to a planar orientation. Subsequent exposure to O 2 leads to oxidation of the adsorbed H, reformation of adsorbed O on the Pd/Au surface, and a return of the LC to its initial orientation. The roles of surface composition and reaction kinetics in determining the LC dynamics are described along with a proof-of-concept demonstration of microactuation of beads. Metasurfaces are flat arrays of nanostructures that allow exquisite control of phase and amplitude of incident light. Although metasurfaces offer new active element for both fundamental science and applications, the challenge still remains to overcome their low information capacity and passive nature. Here, by integrating an inverse-designed-metasurface with oblique helicoidal cholesteric liquid crystal (Ch OH ), simultaneous spatial and spectral tunable metasurfaces with a high information capacity for dynamic hyperspectral holography, are demonstrated. The inverse design facilitates a single-phase map encoding of ten independent holographic images at different wavelengths. Ch OH provides precise spectral modulation with narrow bandwidth and wide tunable regime in response to programmed stimuli, thus enabling dynamic switching of the multicolor holography. The results provide simple and generalizable principles for the rational design of interactive metasurfaces that will find numerous applications, including security platform., (© 2024 The Authors. We present a comparative study of the optical and dielectric anisotropy of a laterally fluorinated liquid crystal dimer and its homologous trimer, both exhibiting two nematic phases. In the high-temperature nematic phase, both oligomers exhibit positive optical anisotropy with similar magnitude, which, however, is lower in comparison with the optical anisotropy of the monomer. In the same temperature range, the dielectric permittivity along and perpendicular to the nematic director, measured on magnetically aligned samples, reveals negative dielectric anisotropy for both oligomers, which saturates as the temperature approaches the N-N phase transition temperature. Comparison of the dielectric anisotropies of the oligomers with the corresponding anisotropy of the monomer indicates a systematic variation of its magnitude with the number of the linked mesogenic units. Results are compared with the corresponding anisotropies of the cyanobiphenyl dimers, the archetypal compounds with two nematic phases, and are discussed in terms of the dipolar structure of the mesogens and the dipolar correlations in their nematic phases.

Topological defects play a central role in the physics of many materials, including magnets, superconductors, and liquid crystals. In active fluids, defects become autonomous particles that spontaneously propel from internal active stresses and drive chaotic flows stirring the fluid. The intimate connection between defect textures and active flow suggests that properties of active materials can be engineered by controlling defects, but design principles for their spatiotemporal control remain elusive. Here, we propose a symmetry-based additive strategy for using elementary activity patterns, as active topological tweezers, to create, move, and braid such defects. By combining theory and simulations, we demonstrate how, at the collective level, spatial activity gradients act like electric fields which, when strong enough, induce an inverted topological polarization of defects, akin to a negative susceptibility dielectric. We harness this feature in a dynamic setting to collectively pattern and transport interacting active defects. Natural bone exhibits a complex anisotropic and micro-nano hierarchical structure, more importantly, bone extracellular matrix (ECM) presents liquid crystal (LC) phase and viscoelastic characteristics, providing a unique microenvironment for guiding cell behavior and regulating osteogenesis. However, in bone tissue engineering scaffolds, the construction of bone-like ECM microenvironment with exquisite microstructure is still a great challenge. Here, we developed a novel polysaccharide LC hydrogel supported 3D printed poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) scaffold with bone-like ECM microenvironment and micro-nano aligned structure. First, we prepared a chitin whisker/chitosan polysaccharide LC precursor, and then infuse it into the pores of 3D printed PLLA scaffold, which was previously surface modified with a polydopamine layer. Next, the LC precursor was chemical cross-linked by genipin to form a hydrogel network with bone-like ECM viscoelasticity and LC phase in the scaffold. Subsequently, we performed directional freeze-casting on the composite scaffold to create oriented channels in the LC hydrogel. Finally, we soaked the composite scaffold in phytic acid to further physical cross-link the LC hydrogel through electrostatic interactions and impart antibacterial effects to the scaffold. Sacran is a supergiant cyanobacterial polysaccharide that forms mesogenic supercoil rods that exhibit liquid crystalline (LC) gels at deficient concentrations of around 0.5 wt%, and has several bioactive stimuli-responsive functions. Here, we attempted to form oriented microfibers of sacran by electrospinning, following structural analyses of the sacran rods. A heterogeneous acid-hydrolysis method using a protonated cation-exchange resin was adopted to examine the short-time exposition of concentrated acid to sacran rods. From the supernatant, the oligomeric fraction that was soluble in water and methanol was isolated. The oligomeric fraction had a main sugar ratio of α -Glc: β -Glc: α -Xyl: β -Xyl: α -Rha of 2:5:1.5:1.5:4 (Glc:Xyl:Rha = 7 (=4 + 3):3:4), and it was speculated that the sacran structure includes rhamnoglucan and xyloglucan (4:3), which are generally rigid enough to exhibit LC. To make oriented microfibers of LC sacran, solubility testing was performed on sacran to find good new solvents of polyhydroxy alcohols such as ethylene glycol, 1,2-propanediol, and glycerol. The oriented film was prepared from a sacran aqueous solution where calcium compound particles deposited on the film are different from polyhydroxy alcohol solutions. Although sacran could not form microfibers by itself, polymer composite microfibers of sacran with poly(vinyl alcohol) were prepared by electrospinning. Cross-polarizing microscopy revealed the molecular orientation of the microfibers.

Liquid crystal materials possess hybrid liquid and solid-like properties with high response to stimuli. The 4'-alkyl-4-cyanobiphenyls (nCB) are an important class of liquid crystals that are widely used for various applications. In this study, six alkylcyanobiphenyl liquid crystal samples (5CB to 10CB) were examined using Raman spectroscopy in a total of twelve solvents of various polarities. The distinctive bands contributed by the LC sample are from C≡N stretch, C-C aromatic ring breathing, C-C biphenyl linking stretch, and C-H in-plane deformation. These modes are found to be responsive to different solvent environments by shifting positions. For instance, the cyano stretching mode of 5CB is blue-shifted from 2229 cm -1 for the pure sample to 2233 cm -1 when measured in hexane due to the repulsive interaction between the mode and the solvent bath. On the other hand, this mode undergoes a red-shift to 2220 cm -1 in methanol due to hydrogen bond interaction between the mode and solvent molecules. Overall, the shift in the position of the vibrational modes of nCB molecules was correlated with solvent properties such as acceptor number, donor number, and Kamlet-Taft dipolarity constants, which are a measure of solvent polarity. In samples with longer alkyl chains (8CB, 9CB, and 10CB), the wavenumber of the stretching modes was generally shifted to around the same position in all the solvents. Plants can autonomously adjust their growth direction based on the gravitropic response to maximize energy acquisition, despite lacking nerves and muscles. Endowing soft robots with gravitropism may facilitate the development of self-regulating systems free of electronics, but remains elusive. Herein, acceleration-regulated soft actuators are described that can respond to the gravitational field by leveraging the unique fluidity of liquid metal in its self-limiting oxide skin. The soft actuator is obtained by magnetic printing of the fluidic liquid metal heater circuit on a thermoresponsive liquid crystal elastomer. The Joule heat of the liquid metal circuit with gravity-regulated resistance can be programmed by changing the actuator's pose to induce the flow of liquid metal. The actuator can autonomously adjust its bending degree by the dynamic interaction between its thermomechanical response and gravity. A gravity-interactive soft gripper is also created with controllable grasping and releasing by rotating the actuator. Moreover, it is demonstrated that self-regulated oscillation motion can be achieved by interfacing the actuator with a monostable tape spring, allowing the electronics-free control of a bionic walker. Acoustic field and vibration visualisation is important in a wide range of applications. Laser vibrometry is often used for such visualisation, however, the equipment has a high cost and requires significant user expertise, and the method can be slow, as it requires scanning point by point. Here we suggest a different approach to visualisation of acoustic fields in the kHz - MHz range, using paint-on or removable film sensors, which produce a direct visual map of ultrasound displacement. The sensors are based on a film containing thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC), along with a backing/underlay layer which improves absorption of ultrasound. The absorption generates heat, which can be seen by a change in colour of the TLC film. A removable sensor is used to visualise the resonant modes of an air-coupled flexural transducer operated from 410 kHz to 7.23 MHz, and to visualise 40 kHz standing waves in a Perspex plate. The thermal basis of the visualisation is confirmed using thermal imaging. 4D microstructured actuators are micro-objects made of stimuli-responsive materials capable of induced shape deformations, with applications ranging from microrobotics to smart micropatterned haptic surfaces. The novel technology dual-wavelength volumetric microlithography (DWVML) realizes rapid printing of high-resolution 3D microstructures and so has the potential to pave the way to feasible manufacturing of 4D microdevices. In this work, DWVML is applied for the first time to printing stimuli-responsive materials, namely, liquid crystal networks (LCNs). An LCN photoresist is developed and characterized, and large arrays of up to 5625 LCN micropillars with programmable shape changes are produced by means of DWVML in the time span of seconds, over areas as large as ∼5.4 mm 2 . The production rate of 0.24 mm 3 h -1 is achieved, exceeding speeds previously reported for additive manufacturing of LCNs by 2 orders of magnitude. Finally, a membrane with tunable, micrometer-sized pores is fabricated to illustrate the potential DWVML holds for real-world applications.

Many living and artificial systems show similar emergent behavior and collective motions on different scales, starting from swarms of bacteria to synthetic active particles, herds of mammals, and crowds of people. What all these systems often have in common is that new collective properties like flocking emerge from interactions between individual self-propelled or driven units. Such systems are naturally out-of-equilibrium and propel at the expense of consumed energy. Mimicking nature by making self-propelled or externally driven particles and studying their individual and collective motility may allow for deeper understanding of physical underpinnings behind collective motion of large groups of interacting objects or beings. Here, using a soft matter system of colloids immersed into a liquid crystal, we show that resulting so-called nematoelastic multipoles can be set into a bidirectional locomotion by external oscillating electric fields. Out-of-equilibrium elastic interactions between such colloidal objects lead to collective flock-like behaviors emerging from time-varying elasticity-mediated interactions between externally driven propelling particles. Repulsive elastic interactions in the equilibrium state can be turned into attractive interactions in the out-of-equilibrium state under applied external electric fields. We probe this behavior at different number densities of colloidal particles and show that particles in dense dispersions collectively select the same direction of a coherent motion due to elastic interactions between near neighbors. In our experimentally implemented design, their motion is highly ordered and without clustering or jamming often present in other colloidal transport systems, which is promising for technological and fundamental-science applications, like nano-cargo transport, out-of-equilibrium assembly, and microrobotics., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

Noncontact alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) is crucial for large-area and ultrahigh definition (UHD) display manufacturing. This research presents an innovative approach to the photoalignment of LCs, aiming to overcome challenges associated with uniformity and assembly in large-sized and UHD displays. Using homogeneously dissolved, nonionic azobenzene chromophores sensitive to both visible and UV light, we demonstrate an in situ stepwise progression of dye-induced LC alignment and subsequent stabilization using reactive mesogen (RM). Both dual-wavelength and single-wavelength approaches enable stepwise interfacial modifications for LC alignment and stabilization. The dye-induced LC alignment is rewritable, allowing for the creation of various patterns and gray-level alignments. The stability of the alignment is ensured through cross-linked RM layers, providing a robust and permanent solution for LC alignment without the need for delicate mechanical treatments. Importantly, this method addresses the challenges associated with conventional photoalignments, including various dye-induced approaches and high-energy photoalignment. The proposed method exhibits high-quality electro-optical switching, azimuthal anchoring strength, and stability against thermal, radiation, and ac-field stresses, making it a promising candidate for commercial mass production, especially in the fabrication of large-sized and UHD LC displays.

Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs), identified as emerging contaminations, have been detected in soils and plants, but their accumulation characteristics in plants haven't been studied. Therefore, this study systematically investigated the accumulation characteristics of LCMs in plants from four dimensions (i.e., plant fruit species, soil types, plant growth stages, and LCMs categories) for the first time. The LCMs concentrations (9.96 × 10 -4 to 114.608 ng/g) in 22 plant fruits were predicted by the partition-limited model. Grains with the highest lipid content showed the highest LCMs accumulation propensity. Plants grown in paddy soil showed a strong LCMs accumulation capacity. Results showed that the LCMs accumulation capacity in plants from soils decreased when the soil organic matter content increased. A preferential accumulation of LCMs in plant root systems during growth was found by the molecular dynamics simulations. Compared to polychlorinated biphenyls (as the reference contaminants of LCMs), LCMs exhibit higher accumulation in plant roots and lower translocation to shoots. For the fourth dimension, lipophilicity was found to be the main reason of LCMs accumulation by intergraded stepwise linear regression with sensitivity analysis. The report presents static, low-frequency, and dynamic dielectric properties in the isotropic liquid, nematic, and solid phases of MBBA and related nanocolloids with paraelectric BaTiO 3 nanoparticles (spherical, d = 50 nm). MBBA (4-methoxybenzylidene-4'-butylaniline) is a liquid crystalline compound with a permanent dipole moment transverse to the long molecular axis. The distortions-sensitive analysis of the dielectric constant revealed its hidden pretransitional anomaly, strongly influenced by the addition of nanoparticles. The evolution of the dielectric constant in the nematic phase shows the split into two regions, with the crossover coinciding with the standard melting temperature. The 'universal' exponential-type behavior of the low-frequency contribution to the real part of the dielectric permittivity is found. The critical-like pretransitional behavior in the solid phase is also evidenced. This is explained by linking the Lipovsky model to the Mossotti catastrophe concept under quasi-negative pressure conditions. The explicit preference for the 'critical-like' evolution of the apparent activation enthalpy is worth stressing for dynamics. Finally, the long-range, 'critical-like' behavior of the dissipation factor ( D = tgδ ), covering the isotropic liquid and nematic phases, is shown.

Ferronematics that are generally based on nematic liquid crystals (LCs) doped with magnetic nanoparticles, synergistically taking advantage of the anisotropic and flow characteristics of the nematic host and the magnetic susceptibility of the dopant, have powerful applications as magnetically actuated soft materials. In this work, a Co(II) complex, which alone presents both characteristics, is built with a salen-type ligand 3,5-dichlorosubstituted at the aromatic nuclei and has a tetramethyldisiloxane spacer, which makes it one of the few metallomesogens containing this structural motif. Paramagnetic crystals, through heat treatment above 110 °C, change into magnetic nematic LCs. Applying a perpendicular magnetic field of 50 mT, the nematic droplets align two by two through dipole-dipole interactions. By incorporating it into a silicone matrix consisting mainly of polydimethylsiloxane, a 3D printable ink is formulated and crosslinked under various shapes. In this environment, the cobalt complex is stabilized in an LC state at room temperature and, due to its anisotropy, facilitates the mechanical response to magnetic stimuli. Liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) are widely used in electronic devices and emerging as an environmental pollutant, while their occurrence in indoor environments is still less studied. In this study, 32 out of 37 target LCMs were detected in indoor residential dust samples (n = 112) from Beijing, China. Concentrations of Σ 32 LCMs ranged from 17.8 to 197 ng/g, with a median value of 54.7 ng/g. Fluorinated biphenyls and analogs (FBAs) and cyanobiphenyls and analogs (CBAs), with median concentrations of 22.8 and 15.9 ng/g, respectively, were the main kinds of LCMs. Although 32 LCMs can be detected, four monomers with the highest contamination levels contributed to almost 70% of the total LCMs. Spearman correlation analysis found significant correlations among some monomers, which indicated that they might share similar sources in the residential environment. Estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of LCMs via indoor dust for Beijing residents were calculated, and the results showed that dust ingestion and dermal contact were both main intake pathways to LCMs, and younger people may face higher exposure to LCMs. A comparison to the results of China's total diet study showed that EDIs of LCMs via food consumption might be higher than that via dust intake, while health risks caused by exposure of LCMs for the general population, both through food and dust, were insignificant at present., (© 2024. We demonstrate an exceptional ability of a high-polarization 3D ferroelectric liquid to form freely suspended fluid fibers at room temperature. Unlike fluid threads in modulated smectics and columnar phases, where translational order is a prerequisite for forming liquid fibers, recently discovered ferroelectric nematic forms fibers with solely orientational molecular order. Additional stabilization mechanisms based on the polar nature of the mesophase are required for this. Conventional ocean wave observation instruments are powered by batteries, limiting the continuous observation time. Besides, the waste of batteries brings environmental contaminations. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) can reveal ocean wave information through their electrical output, taking the triboelectric charge as the information carrier. However, charge amplification is necessary, consuming additional energy. Herein, taking the photons rather than electrons as the information carrier, we developed a fully self-powered natural light-enabled sensing system for ocean wave monitoring by coupling two rotary-freestanding sliding TENGs (RFS-TENGs) and a polymer network liquid crystal (PNLC)-triggered optical system. The natural light is modulated by the PNLC driven by ocean wave-induced friction. With the assistance of a one-way bearing, the rise and fall of the wave will trigger different RFS-TENGs to power the PNLC in different voltage drops, leading to different transmitted natural light intensities. The wave height information can be obtained through the number of pulse signals with the same trough light intensity, while the wave period can be obtained through the duration between the same two sets of pulse signals. The effectiveness of the developed sensing paradigm in practical applications was verified by flume-based experiments, with the highest accuracies of 90.7% in wave height and 99.8% in wave period.
