Introduction and Objectives: The impact of preoperative left ventricular (LV) unloading on postoperative outcomes in patients bridged with venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) to heart transplantation (HT) is unknown. Our aim was to compare posttransplant outcomes in patients bridged to HT with VA-ECMO, with or without the use of different mechanical strategies for LV decompression., Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the postoperative outcomes of consecutive HT candidates bridged with VA-ECMO, with or without concomitant LV unloading. Patients were included from 16 Spanish centers from 2010 to 2020. The primary endpoint was 1-year post-HT survival, which was assessed using Cox regression., Results: Overall, 245 patients underwent high-emergency HT while supported with VA-ECMO. A mechanical strategy for LV unloading was used in 133 (54.3%) patients, with the intra-aortic balloon pump being the most commonly used method (n = 112; 84.2%). One-year posttransplant survival was 74.4% in the LV unloading group and 59.8% in the control group (P = .025). In multivariate analyses, preoperative LV unloading was independently associated with lower 1-year mortality (adjusted HR, 0.50; 95%CI, 0.32-0.78; P = .003). This association was observed both in patients managed with an intra-aortic balloon pump alone (adjusted HR, 0.52; 95%CI, 0.32-0.84; P = .007) and with other strategies for mechanical LV unloading (adjusted HR, 0.43; 95%CI, 0.19-0.97; P = .042). Perfectionism includes various dimensions focused on different planes of psychological functioning, with both positive and negative elements that influence adaptation to the pursuit of achievement and personal satisfaction with efforts and their attainment. We examined participants' levels of perfectionism and the relationship between perfectionism and anxiety in young athletes, and we described the mediating factor of self-confidence as a determinant of sport performance. We utilized a non-experimental, descriptive, and transversal research design. A total of 263 Spanish young athletes ( M age = 15.79 years; SD = 1.07) who belonged to different sports clubs and engaged in different sports completed the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (FMPS) and the Competitive Anxiety Inventory (CSAI-2R). Our results confirmed our belief that self-confidence was a protective factor for diminishing the negative relationships between perfectionism, anxiety, and sport performance. Regarding the predictive power of these variables, the construction of exaggerated achievement expectations (or personal standards) by combining functional and dysfunctional resources was reflected in cognitive anxiety (dysfunctional) and was mediated by self-confidence (functional). Application of these elements into training via well planned communication may allow coaches to enhance young athletes' resources for mental and behavioral adjustment toward their sporting goal. Aims: There is lack of agreement on late gadolinium enhancement cardiac magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) imaging processing for guiding ventricular tachycardia (VT) ablation. We aim at developing and validating a systematic processing approach on LGE-CMR images to identify VT corridors that contain critical VT isthmus sites., Methods and Results: This is a translational study including 18 pigs with established myocardial infarction and inducible VT undergoing in vivo characterization of the anatomical and functional myocardial substrate associated with VT maintenance. Clinical validation was conducted in a multicentre series of 33 patients with ischaemic cardiomyopathy undergoing VT ablation. Three-dimensional LGE-CMR images were processed using systematic scanning of 15 signal intensity (SI) cut-off ranges to obtain surface visualization of all potential VT corridors. Analysis and comparisons of imaging and electrophysiological data were performed in individuals with full electrophysiological characterization of the isthmus sites of at least one VT morphology. In both the experimental pig model and patients undergoing VT ablation, all the electrophysiologically defined isthmus sites (n = 11 and n = 19, respectively) showed overlapping regions with CMR-based potential VT corridors. Such imaging-based VT corridors were less specific than electrophysiologically guided ablation lesions at critical isthmus sites. However, an optimized strategy using the 7 most relevant SI cut-off ranges among patients showed an increase in specificity compared to using 15 SI cut-off ranges (70 vs. 62%, respectively), without diminishing the capability to detect VT isthmus sites (sensitivity 100%)., Conclusion: Systematic imaging processing of LGE-CMR sequences using several SI cut-off ranges may improve and standardize procedure planning to identify VT isthmus sites., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest: none declared., (© The Author(s) 2024. Introduction and Objetives: Cardiac amyloidosis (CA) is a disorder associated with high number of hospital admissions. Given the scarce information available, we propose an analysis of the incidence and causes of hospitalization in this disease., Material and Methods: One hundred and forty-three patients [128 by transthyretin (ATTR-CA) and 15 by light chains (AL-CA)] included in Registro de Amiloidosis Cardiaca de Galicia (AMIGAL) were evaluated, including all hospitalizations., Results: During a median follow-up of 959 days there were 179 unscheduled hospitalizations [incidence rate (IR) 512.6 admissions per 1000 patients-year], most common due to cardiovascular reasons (n=109, IR 312.2). Most frequent individual cause of hospitalization was heart failure (n=87, TI 249.2). AL-CA was associated with a higher IR of unscheduled hospitalizations than ATTR-CA (IR 781 vs. 483.2; HR 1.62; p=0,029) due to non-cardiovascular admissions (IR 376 vs. 181.2; HR 2.07; p=0.027). Unscheduled admission-free survival at 1 and 3 years in AL-CA was inferior than in ATTR-CA (46.7% and 20.0% vs. 73.4% and 35.2%, respectively; p=0.021)., Conclusions: CA was associated with high incidence of hospitalizations, being heart failure the most frequent individual cause; unscheduled admission-free survival in AL-CA was lower than in ATTR-CA due mostly to non-cardiovascular admissions., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier España, S.L.U. Objective: To address the relationship between systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease activity and the functional parameters of the innate immunity., Methods: We evaluated a cohort of 26 adult SLE patients and 10 sex and age-paired healthy donors. When the patients had a disease flare (baseline) and when they achieve clinical response (follow-up), we assessed the systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index 2 K (SLEDAI 2 K) and the following parameters with flow cytometry and confocal microscopy: monocyte subsets, their expression of TLR2, phagocytic monocytes and neutrophils using the pHrodo Red E. coli BioParticles, the respiratory burst with 123-dihydrorhodamine in neutrophils, and the spontaneous and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced production of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). We used the Wilcoxon test to compare the paired medians with interquartile range (IQR) and the Mann-Whitney U test for independent medians. To assess the effect of prednisone and SLEDAI 2 K on the mentioned parameters, we applied a generalized mixed linear model., Results: Twenty-three patients (88.4%) were women. The SLEDAI 2 K was higher at baseline 8 (6-14) in comparison to that at follow-up (6 (4-8), P = 0.028). At baseline, SLE patients had a decreased percentage of intermediate monocytes, a higher expression of TLR2 in total monocytes, increased phagocytosis in monocytes and neutrophils, a decreased respiratory burst intensity, and an increased production of NETs. In the mix model, the SLEDAI 2 K was the main factor influencing these functional innate immune parameters., Conclusion: Disease activity regulates the innate immune function in SLE which may contribute to the clinical features and infection predisposition. Key points • This is the first cohort study addressing the effect of disease activity and prednisone use on the innate immune function of lupus patients. • Our results show that the disease activity is a key regulator of the respiratory burst, phagocytosis, and the production of neutrophil extracellular traps. • Also, we observed a differential proportion of monocyte subsets according to SLE disease activity. • We consider that our manuscript contributes to the evidence addressing the intrinsic immune abnormalities of patients with SLE regardless of the use of immunosuppressants and set the bases for new research work considering the disease activity as an element to decide the prescription and duration of antibiotic prophylaxis in SLE patients, which is of interest to all rheumatologists., (© 2023. Electromechanical characterization during atrial fibrillation (AF) remains a significant gap in the understanding of AF-related atrial myopathy. This study reports mechanistic insights into the electromechanical remodeling process associated with AF progression and further demonstrates its prognostic value in the clinic. In pigs, sequential electromechanical assessment during AF progression shows a progressive decrease in mechanical activity and early dissociation from its electrical counterpart. Atrial tissue samples from animals with AF reveal an abnormal increase in cardiomyocytes death and alterations in calcium handling proteins. High-throughput quantitative proteomics and immunoblotting analyses at different stages of AF progression identify downregulation of contractile proteins and progressive increase in atrial fibrosis. Moreover, advanced optical mapping techniques, applied to whole heart preparations during AF, demonstrate that AF-related remodeling decreases the frequency threshold for dissociation between transmembrane voltage signals and intracellular calcium transients compared to healthy controls. Single cell simulations of human atrial cardiomyocytes also confirm the experimental results. Studies of cellular and cytokine profiles have contributed to the inflammation hypothesis of schizophrenia; however, precise markers of inflammatory dysfunction remain elusive. A number of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) studies in patients with first-episode psychosis (FEP) have shown higher brain levels of metabolites such as glutamate, myo-inositol (mI) and choline-containing compounds (tCho), suggesting neuroinflammation. Here, we present peripheral inflammatory profiles in antipsychotic-naive FEP patients and age-and-sex matched healthy controls, as well as cortical glutamate, mI and tCho levels using 1H-MRS. Inflammatory profiles were analyzed using cytokine production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells, that were either spontaneous or stimulated, in 48 FEP patients and 23 controls. 1H-MRS of the medial prefrontal cortex was obtained in 29 FEP patients and 18 controls. Finally, 16 FEP patients were rescanned after 4 weeks of treatment (open-label) with Risperidone. FEP patients showed a higher proportion of proinflammatory Th1/Th17 subset, and an increased spontaneous production of Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-2 and IL-4 compared with the control group. Results obtained from 1H-MRS showed no significant difference in either glutamate, mI or tCho between FEP and control groups. At baseline, CD8% showed a negative correlation with glutamate in FEP patients; after 4 weeks of risperidone treatment, the FEP group exhibited a decrease in glutamate levels which positively correlated with CD4 + T cells. Nevertheless, these correlations did not survive correction for multiple comparisons. FEP patients show evidence of immune dysregulation, affecting both the innate and adaptive immune response, with a predominantly Th2 signature. Objective: To describe health relaed quality of life in a cohort of stable adult outpatients with hereditary an-gioedema (HAE) with validated tools., Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was performed, carried out in patients with hereditary angioedema, coming from the City of Buenos Aires and its provinces: Corrientes, Chubut, Entre Ríos and Santa Fe. The HAE-QoL and SF-12v2 health questionnaires were applied to assess the related quality of life. with health., Results: 100 patients were included; median age: 41.5 years (range: 18-77); 65% were female, and 79% had type 1 HAE. Asymptomatic, mild, moderate and severe cases accounted for 6, 29, 38, and 27% of participants, respectively. Seventeen percent of patients were receiving long-term prophylaxis. Icatibant was the most fre-quent treatment for acute episodes. All health domains SF-12v2 scores were lower than expected in general population, excepting "vitality" and "physical functioning". Total and all specific domains HAE-QoL scores were reduced. Differences between women and men and in every age-defined group were demonstrated for sev-eral specific domains., Conclusions: Health relaed to quality life was notably reduced in Argentinean patients with HAE, when imple-menting the HAE.QoL, and SF-12v2 questionnaries. The need for multidisciplinary strategies approaching this complex disease is highlighted.

Introduction: Pulmonary embolism (PE) response teams (PERT) for the management of high-risk PE (HR-PE) and intermediate-high risk PE (IHR-PE) are encouraged in PE guidelines. We aimed to assess the impact of a PERT initiative on mortality in these groups of patients, compared with standard care., Methods: We conducted a prospective, single-center registry, including consecutive patients with HR-PE and IHR-PE with PERT activation from February-2018 to December-2020 (PERT group, n=78 patients) and compared it with an historic cohort of patients admitted to our hospital in a previous 2-year period (2014-2016), managed with standard of care (SC-group, n=108 patients)., Results: Patients in the PERT group were younger and less comorbid. The risk profile at admission and the percentage of HR-PE was similar in both cohorts (13% in SC-group and 14% in PERT-group, p=0.82). Reperfusion therapy was more frequently indicated in PERT-group (24.4% vs 10.2%, p=0.01), with no differences in fibrinolysis treatment, while catheter-directed therapy (CDT) was more frequent in PERT group (16.7% vs 1.9%, p<0.001). Reperfusion and CDT were associated with lower in-hospital mortality (2.9% vs 15.1%, p=0.001 for reperfusion and 1.5% vs 16.5%, p=0.001 for CDT). The primary outcome, 12-month mortality, was lower in the PERT-group (9% vs 22.2%, p=0.02), There were no differences in 30-day readmissions. In multivariate analysis PERT activation was associated with lower mortality at 12 months (HR 0.25, 95% confidence interval 0.09-0.7, p=0.008)., Conclusion: A PERT initiative in patients with HR-PE and IHR-PE was associated with a significant reduction in 12-month mortality compared with standard of care, and also with an increase in the use of reperfusion, especially catheter-directed therapies., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier España, S.L.U. Introduction: In Mexico, cardiac rehabilitation (CR) as an interdisciplinary intervention with therapeutic impact in patients with heart disease is growing. There is the need to know actual conditions of CR in our country., Objectives: The objective of this National Registry is to follow-up those existing and new CR units in Mexico through the comparison between the two previous registries, RENAPREC-2009 and RENAPREC II-2015 studies. This is a descriptive study focused on diverse CR activities such as assistance training, and certification of health professionals, barriers, reference, population attended, interdisciplinarity, permanence over time, growth prospects, regulations, post-pandemic condition, integrative characteristics, and scientific research., Results: Data were collected from 45 CR centers in the 32 states, 75.5% are private practice units, 67% are new, 33% were part of RENAPREC II-2015, and 17 have continued since 2009. With a better distribution of CR units along the territory, the median reference of candidates for CR programs is 9% with a significant reduction into tiempo of enrollment to Phase II admission (19 ± 11 days). Regarding to previous registries, the coverance of Phases I, II, and III is 71%, 100%, and 93%, respectively; and a coverance increases in evaluation, risk stratification, and prescription, more comprehensive attendance and prevention strategies., Conclusions: CR in Mexico has grown in the past 7 years. Even there is still low reference and heterogeneity in specific processes, there are strengths such as interdisciplinarity, scientific professionalization of specialists, national diversification, and an official society that are consolidated over time.

Introduction: Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is the main antibody isotype in body fluids such as tears, intestinal mucous, colostrum, and saliva. There are two subtypes of IgA in humans: IgA1, mainly present in blood and mucosal sites, and IgA2, preferentially expressed in mucosal sites like the colon. In clinical practice, immunoglobulins are typically measured in venous or capillary blood; however, alternative samples, including saliva, are now being considered, given their non-invasive and easy collection nature. Several autoimmune diseases have been related to diverse abnormalities in oral mucosal immunity, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)., Methods: We decided to evaluate the levels of both IgA subtypes in the saliva of SLE patients. A light chain capture-based ELISA measured specific IgA1 and IgA2 levels in a cohort of SLE patients compared with age and gender-matched healthy volunteers., Results: Surprisingly, our results indicated that in the saliva of SLE patients, total IgA and IgA1 subtype were significantly elevated; we also found that salivary IgA levels, particularly IgA2, positively correlate with anti-dsDNA IgG antibody titers. Purpose: To describe the evolution of the serum levels of soluble HLA-G (s-HLA-G) during the first 12 months after heart transplantation (HT) and to correlate it with clinical outcomes., Methods: Observational study based in a single-center cohort of 59 patients who underwent HT between December-2003 and March-2010. Soluble HLA-G levels were measured from serum samples extracted before HT, and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after HT. The cumulative burden of s-HLA-G expression during the first post-transplant year was assessed by means of the area under the curve (AUC) of s-HLA-G levels over time and correlated with the acute rejection burden -as assessed by a rejection score-, the presence of coronary allograft vasculopathy (CAV) grade ≥ 1 and infections during the first post-transplant year; as well as with long-term patient and graft survival. Mean follow-up was 12.4 years., Results: Soluble HLA-G levels decreased over the first post-transplant year (p = 0.020). The AUC of s-HLA-G levels during the first post-transplant year was higher among patients with infections vs. those without infections (p = 0.006). No association was found between the AUC of s-HLA-G levels and the burden of acute rejection or the development of CAV. Overall long-term survival, long-term survival free of late graft failure and cancer-free survival were not significantly different in patients with an AUC of s-HLA-G levels higher or lower than the median of the study population., Conclusions: Soluble HLA-G levels decreased over the first year after HT. Process modeling has become a fundamental tool to guide experimental work. Unfortunately, process models based on first principles can be expensive to develop and evaluate, and hard to use, particularly when convergence issues arise. This work proves that Bayesian symbolic learning can be applied to derive simple closed-form expressions from rigorous process simulations, streamlining the process modeling task and making process models more accessible to experimental groups. Compared to conventional surrogate models, our approach provides analytical expressions that are easier to communicate and manipulate algebraically to get insights into the process. We apply this method to synthetic data obtained from two basic CO 2 capture processes simulated in Aspen HYSYS, identifying accurate simplified interpretable equations for key variables dictating the process economic and environmental performance. Aims: To assess the incidence of cancer diagnosis and cancer-related mortality in patients with heart failure (HF)., Methods: Observational study based in a prospective cohort of patients with HF referred to a specialized Spanish clinic between 2010 and 2019. The observed incidence of malignancies (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer) was compared to that expected for the general Spanish population according to the Global Cancer Observatory., Results: We studied 1909 consecutive patients with HF. Over a median follow-up of 4.07 years, 165 new cases of malignancy were diagnosed. Observed age-standardized incidence rates of cancer were 861 (95% CI 618.4-2159.4) cases per 100,000 patients-years in men and 728.5 (95% CI 451.1-4308.7) cases per 100,000 patients-years in women; while age-standardized incidence rates of cancer expected for the general Spanish population were 479.4 cases per 100,000 patients-years in men (risk ratio = 1.80) and 295.5 cases per 100,000 patients-years in women (risk ratio = 2.46). Both a history of pre-existing malignancy at baseline and the development of new malignancies during follow-up were associated with reduced survival. Observed age-standardized cancer-related mortality was 344.1 (95% CI 202.1-1675) deaths per 100,000 patient-years in men and 217.0 (95% CI 32.8-3949.3) deaths per 100,000 patient-years in women; while age-standardized cancer-related mortality expected for the general Spanish population was 201.4 deaths per 100,000 patients-years in men (risk ratio = 1.71) and 96.2 deaths per 100,000 patients-years in women (risk ratio = 2.26)., Conclusion: Patients with HF showed higher incidence rates of cancer diagnosis and cancer-related mortality than those expected for the general population., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest There are no conflicts of interest regarding this publication., (Copyright © 2022. Botrytis cinerea, the causal agent of the gray mold, is a filamentous fungus that infects blueberries and can cause important production losses in postharvest storage. Considering that the use of synthetic fungicides is not allowed on blueberries in postharvest conditions, alternative and natural strategies are needed to control gray mold. The objective of this work was to evaluate the capability of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by Trichoderma atroviride IC-11 to control B. cinerea growth in blueberries after harvest. These VOCs inhibited almost completely B. cinerea growth in vitro. The most abundant volatile compound was 6-pentyl-α-pyrone (6PP). In vitro assays with pure 6PP confirmed its antifungal activity. The incidence of gray mold was evaluated in blueberries inoculated with B. cinerea and exposed to volatiles of T. atroviride IC-11. Gray mold incidence among those stored in air at 20 °C for 14 days was 100%, while the incidence among the volatile-treated fruit was 17%. Gray mold incidence among those stored in air at 4 °C for 31 days was 82%, while the incidence among the volatile-treated fruit was 11%. T. atroviride IC-11 VOCs inhibited mycelial growth and conidia germination of B. cinerea. The binding of VOCs to the surface of hyphae caused their vacuolation and deterioration. Selective cytotoxicity of 6PP on B. cinerea was observed but not on human intestinal cells at specific concentrations that controlled gray mold. Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the most common manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), characterized by abnormal B cell activation and differentiation to memory or plasma effector cells. However, the role of these cells in the pathogenesis of LN is not fully understood, as well as the effect of induction therapy on B cell subsets, possibly associated with this manifestation, like aged-associated B cells (ABCs). Consequently, we analyzed the molecules defining the ABCs subpopulation (CD11c, T-bet, and CD21) through flow cytometry of blood samples from patients with lupus presenting or not LN, following up a small sub-cohort after six months of induction therapy. The frequency of ABCs resulted higher in LN patients compared to healthy subjects. Unexpectedly, we identified a robust reduction of a CD21 hi subset that was almost specific to LN patients. Moreover, several clinical and laboratory lupus features showed strong and significant correlations with this undefined B cell subpopulation. Finally, it was observed that the induction therapy affected not only the frequencies of ABCs and CD21 hi subsets but also the phenotype of the CD21 hi subset that expressed a higher density of CXCR5. Background/objective: Biomarkers for disease activity and damage accrual in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) are currently lacking. The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to analyze the relationship among low-density granulocytes (LDGs), neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), and clinical and immunological features of patients with IIM., Methods: We assessed disease activity, damage accrual, amount of LDGs, NETs, expression of LL-37, and serum cytokines in 65 adult patients with IIM. Differences between groups and correlations were assessed by Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and Spearman ρ tests. The association between LDGs, NETs, disease activity, calcinosis, and cutaneous ulcers was assessed by logistic regression. To address the capacity of LDGs and NETs to diagnose disease activity, we used receiving operating characteristic curves., Results: Low-density granulocytes were higher in patients with active disease, ulcers, calcinosis, and anti-MDA5 antibodies, which correlated with serum levels of IL-17A and IL-18. Neutrophil extracellular traps were higher in patients with calcinosis, elevated titers of antinuclear antibodies, and positive anti-PM/Scl75 tests. The combination of a high proportion of both total LDGs and NETs was associated with the presence of calcinosis and cutaneous ulcers. LL-37 was higher in NETs originating from LDGs. Normal-density neutrophils were elevated in patients with active dermatomyositis., Conclusions: Low-density granulocytes and NETs containing LL-37 are increased in patients with IIM and active disease, and correlate with proinflammatory cytokines. Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) will be essential to meet the climate targets, so enabling its deployment at the right time will be decisive. Here, we investigate the still poorly understood implications of delaying CDR actions, focusing on integrating direct air capture and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (DACCS and BECCS) into the European Union power mix. Under an indicative target of -50 Gt of net CO 2 by 2100, delayed CDR would cost an extra of 0.12-0.19 trillion EUR per year of inaction. Moreover, postponing CDR beyond mid-century would substantially reduce the removal potential to almost half (-35.60 Gt CO 2 ) due to the underused biomass and land resources and the maximum technology diffusion speed. The effective design of BECCS and DACCS systems calls for long-term planning starting from now and aligned with the evolving power systems. Our quantitative analysis of the consequences of inaction on CDR-with climate targets at risk and fair CDR contributions at stake-should help to break the current impasse and incentivize early actions worldwide., (© 2021. Delayed gadolinium-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) imaging requires novel and time-efficient approaches to characterize the myocardial substrate associated with ventricular arrhythmia in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy. Using a translational approach in pigs and patients with established myocardial infarction, we tested and validated a novel 3D methodology to assess ventricular scar using custom transmural criteria and a semiautomatic approach to obtain transmural scar maps in ventricular models reconstructed from both 3D-acquired and 3D-upsampled-2D-acquired LGE-CMR images. The results showed that 3D-upsampled models from 2D LGE-CMR images provided a time-efficient alternative to 3D-acquired sequences to assess the myocardial substrate associated with ischemic cardiomyopathy. Scar assessment from 2D-LGE-CMR sequences using 3D-upsampled models was superior to conventional 2D assessment to identify scar sizes associated with the cycle length of spontaneous ventricular tachycardia episodes and long-term ventricular tachycardia recurrences after catheter ablation. This novel methodology may represent an efficient approach in clinical practice after manual or automatic segmentation of myocardial borders in a small number of conventional 2D LGE-CMR slices and automatic scar detection., (© 2021. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is related to enhanced production of NETs, and autoimmune/autoinflammatory phenomena. We evaluated the proportion of low-density granulocytes (LDG) by flow cytometry, and their capacity to produce NETs was compared with that of conventional neutrophils. NETs and their protein cargo were quantified by confocal microscopy and ELISA. Antinuclear antibodies (ANA), anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) and the degradation capacity of NETs were addressed in serum. MILLIPLEX assay was used to assess the cytokine levels in macrophages' supernatant and serum. We found a higher proportion of LDG in severe and critical COVID-19 which correlated with severity and inflammatory markers. Severe/critical COVID-19 patients had higher plasmatic NE, LL-37 and HMGB1-DNA complexes, whilst ISG-15-DNA complexes were lower in severe patients. Sera from severe/critical COVID-19 patients had lower degradation capacity of NETs, which was reverted after adding hrDNase. Anti-NET antibodies were found in COVID-19, which correlated with ANA and ANCA positivity. NET stimuli enhanced the secretion of cytokines in macrophages. This study unveils the role of COVID-19 NETs as inducers of pro-inflammatory and autoimmune responses. The deficient degradation capacity of NETs may contribute to the accumulation of these structures and anti-NET antibodies are related to the presence of autoantibodies.

The optical absorption coefficient of culture media is critical for the survival analysis of pathogens under optical irradiation. The quality of the results obtained from experiments relies on the optical analysis of the spatial distribution of fluence which also depends on the geometry of the sample. In this contribution, we consider both the geometrical shape and the culture medium's absorption coefficient to evaluate how the spatial distribution of optical radiation affects pathogens/viruses. In this work, we exposed SARS-CoV-2 to UV-C radiation ([Formula: see text] = 254 nm) and we calculated-considering the influence of the optical absorption of the culture medium-a characteristic inactivation fluence of [Formula: see text] = 4.7 J/m 2 , or an equivalent 10% survival (D90 dose) of 10.8 J/m 2 . Experimentally, we diluted the virus into sessile drops of Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium to evaluate pathogen activity after controlled doses of UV irradiation. To validate the optical absorption mode, we carried out an additional experiment where we varied droplet size. Our model-including optical absorption and geometrical considerations-provides robust results among a variety of experimental situations, and represents our experimental conditions more accurately. These results will help to evaluate the capability of UV disinfecting strategies applied to a variety of everyday situations, including the case of micro-droplets generated by respiratory functions., (© 2021. Background: Lactobacillus is a genus of Gram-positive non-spore-forming rods usually found in the microbiota of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and female genitourinary tract. Also, they are commonly used in the food industry as supplements and probiotics. Lactobacilli are normally considered non-pathogenic to the human body, however, under certain circumstances such as immunosuppression, they can cause severe infections, with only a few cases of bacteremia, infective endocarditis, pneumonia, meningitis, and intra-abdominal infections reported. Among these presentations, a pyogenic liver abscess is rather rare., Case Presentation: We describe the case of a 59-year-old man with a history of diabetes mellitus and multiple abdominal surgeries with the latest being in 2014 presenting with bacteremia and multiple large pyogenic liver abscesses due to Lactobacillus gasseri, which did not appear to be related to the use of probiotics or immunosuppression., Conclusions: Given the high prevalence of diabetes mellitus and the increased use of probiotics, it is expected that in the future we will see an increase in infections caused by Lactobacilli. Medical management with antibiotics and percutaneous drainage were successful strategies for the treatment of this unusual case of pyogenic liver abscesses and bacteremia caused by Lactobacillus gasseri.

Introduction: The worldwide pandemic, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel infection with serious clinical manifestations, including death. Our aim is to describe the first non-ICU Spanish deceased series with COVID-19, comparing specifically between unexpected and expected deaths. Methods: In this single-centre study, all deceased inpatients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 who had died from March 4 to April 16, 2020 were consecutively included. Demographic, clinical, treatment, and laboratory data, were analyzed and compared between groups. Factors associated with unexpected death were identified by multivariable logistic regression methods. Results: In total, 324 deceased patients were included. Median age was 82 years (IQR 76-87); 55.9% males. The most common cardiovascular risk factors were hypertension (78.4%), hyperlipidemia (57.7%), and diabetes (34.3%). Other common comorbidities were chronic kidney disease (40.1%), chronic pulmonary disease (30.3%), active cancer (13%), and immunosuppression (13%). The Confusion, BUN, Respiratory Rate, Systolic BP and age ≥65 (CURB-65) score at admission was >2 in 40.7% of patients. During hospitalization, 77.8% of patients received antivirals, 43.3% systemic corticosteroids, and 22.2% full anticoagulation. The rate of bacterial co-infection was 5.5%, and 105 (32.4%) patients had an increased level of troponin I. The median time from initiation of therapy to death was 5 days (IQR 3.0-8.0). In 45 patients (13.9%), the death was exclusively attributed to COVID-19, and in 254 patients (78.4%), both COVID-19 and the clinical status before admission contributed to death. Progressive respiratory failure was the most frequent cause of death (92.0%). Twenty-five patients (7.7%) had an unexpected death. Factors independently associated with unexpected death were male sex, chronic kidney disease, insulin-treated diabetes, and functional independence. Conclusions: This case series provides in-depth characterization of hospitalized non-ICU COVID-19 patients who died in Madrid. Male sex, insulin-treated diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and independency for activities of daily living are predictors of unexpected death.

Background: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are characterized by lower ubiquitylation and myeloperoxidase (MPO) as a substrate. The structural and functional effect of such modification and if there are additional post-translational modifications (PTMs) are unknown., Methods: To assess the expression and functional role of PTMs in NETs of patients with SLE; reactivation, proliferation and cytokine production was evaluated by flow cytometry using co-cultures with dendritic cells (DC) and CD4 + from SLE patients and healthy controls. The impact of ubiquitylation on MPO was assessed by molecular dynamics. The expression of ISG15 in NETs was evaluated by immunofluorescence and Western Blot., Results: Fifteen patients with SLE and ten healthy controls were included. In the co-cultures of CD4 + lymphocytes with DC stimulated with ubiquitylated MPO or recombinant MPO, a higher expression of IFNγ and IL-17A was found in CD4 + from SLE patients (p < 0.05). Furthermore, with DC stimulated with ubiquitylated MPO a trend towards increased expression of CD25 and Ki67 was found in lupus CD4 + lymphocytes, while the opposite was documented in controls (p < 0.05). Through molecular dynamics we found the K129-K488-K505 residues of MPO as susceptible to ubiquitylation. Ubiquitylation affects the hydration status of the HEME group depending on the residue to which it is conjugated. R239 was found near by the HEME group when the ubiquitin was in K488-K505. In addition, we found greater expression of ISG15 in the SLE NETs vs controls (p < 0.05), colocalization with H2B (r = 0.81) only in SLE samples and increased production of IFNγ in PBMCs stimulated with lupus NETs compared to healthy controls NETs., Conclusion: The ubiquitylated MPO has a differential effect on the induction of reactivation of CD4 + lymphocytes in patients with SLE, which may be related to structural changes by ubiquitylation at the catalytic site of MPO. Besides a lower ubiquitylation pattern, NETs of patients with SLE are characterized by the expression of ISG15, and the induction of IFNγ by Th1 cells.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is the most frequent allergic disease. Prevalence in children and teenagers in Argentina ranges between 22.3% and 34.9%. Given this situation, members of the scientific committees of Pediatrics and Rhinitis of the Argentinian Association of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (AAAeIC) have reviewed scientific evidence in order to update the therapeutic regulations of this pathology in the pediatric population. The classification and categorization of AR are currently in full review all around the world. It is necessary to make a differential diagnosis with other non-allergic types of rhinitis in children, and to confirm AR based on the clinical history, physical examination, determination of bio-markers, and/or skin tests. Non-pharmacological treatment includes education and guidelines of environmental control for allergens such as dust mites, anemophilous fungi, animal epithelium, and pollens. Step pharmacological therapy is proposed according to the control of the disease. Second-generation, non-sedating anti-histamines are the first line of therapy. The association with oral decongestants is not recommended in children under 4 years of age. Inhaled corticosteroids are the first choice for both moderate and severe forms. This document warns pediatricians about the importance of an early diagnosis, the rational use of step pharmacological therapy, and specific immunotherapy in children.

Objectives: To analyse the potential contribution of low-density granulocytes (LDGs) and NETosis, as well as the differential protein cargo of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), as physiopathogenic mechanisms of adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD)., Methods: We recruited 30 patients with AOSD according to the Yamaguchi diagnostic criteria. LDGs were addressed by multiparametric flow cytometry as those CD14-, CD15+, CD10+ cells in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells fraction. NETs were quantified by ELISA, immunofluorescence and fluorescence spectrometry. The expression of LL-37 and high mobility group box 1 (HMGB-1) in NETs was measured by immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy. Additionally, normal density neutrophils from healthy controls were stimulated with serum from patients with AOSD and NET induction was assessed by immunofluorescence., Results: Patients with active disease as well as those with arthritis, cutaneous manifestations and fever had a higher amount of NETs and LDGs. Serum NETs from AOSD patients correlated with the number of swollen joints (r=0.41, p=0.032), absolute number of monocytes (r=0.529, p=0.005). The spontaneous NETs from patients with cutaneous manifestations and fever had higher cargo of HMGB-1 compared with patients in remission., Conclusions: LDGs and NETs are increased in patients with active AOSD and correlate with particular clinical features. Patients with cutaneous lesions and fever present a higher cargo of HMGB1 in their spontaneous NETs.

Microcins are low-molecular-weight, ribosomally produced, highly stable, bacterial-inhibitory molecules involved in competitive, and amensalistic interactions between Enterobacteriaceae in the intestine. These interactions take place in a highly complex chemical landscape, the intestinal eco-active chemosphere, composed of chemical substances that positively or negatively influence bacterial growth, including those originated from nutrient uptake, and those produced by the action of the human or animal host and the intestinal microbiome. The contribution of bacteria results from their effect on the host generated molecules, on food and digested food, and organic substances from microbial origin, including from bacterial degradation. Here, we comprehensively review the main chemical substances present in the human intestinal chemosphere, particularly of those having inhibitory effects on microorganisms. With this background, and focusing on Enterobacteriaceae , the most relevant human pathogens from the intestinal microbiota, the microcin's history and classification, mechanisms of action, and mechanisms involved in microcin's immunity (in microcin producers) and resistance (non-producers) are reviewed. Products from the chemosphere likely modulate the ecological effects of microcin activity. Several cross-resistance mechanisms are shared by microcins, colicins, bacteriophages, and some conventional antibiotics, which are expected to produce cross-effects. Double-microcin-producing strains (such as microcins MccM and MccH47) have been successfully used for decades in the control of pathogenic gut organisms. Microcins are associated with successful gut colonization, facilitating translocation and invasion, leading to bacteremia, and urinary tract infections. In fact, Escherichia coli strains from the more invasive phylogroups (e.g., B2) are frequently microcinogenic. A publicly accessible APD3 database http://aps.unmc.edu/AP/ shows particular genes encoding microcins in 34.1% of E . coli strains (mostly MccV, MccM, MccH47, and MccI47), and much less in Shigella and Salmonella (<2%). Some 4.65% of Klebsiella pneumoniae are microcinogenic (mostly with MccE492), and even less in Enterobacter or Citrobacter (mostly MccS). Objective: The incidence of aortitis in patients with thoracic aortic diseases is not well established. The aim of this study was to analyse the frequency and clinical course of patients with aortitis in a surgical series., Methods: 320 consecutive patients with ascending aorta/aortic arch aneurysm or acute aortic syndrome who underwent surgery from 2012 to 2017 in a single tertiary referral hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Epidemiological data, clinical course and variables related to diagnosis, treatment and follow-up were collected from patients with histologically proven aortitis., Results: From 320 examined aortic samples, 279 (87.2%) thoracic aneurysms and 41 acute aortic syndromes (12.8%), 9 (2.8%) were aortitis: 3 cases of Takayasu's arteritis, 3 of IgG4-related aortitis, 2 of giant cell, and 1 classified as idiopathic. Median age at surgery was 53.4 (51-69.2) years and six cases were female. Seven patients presented with non-specific symptoms and the diagnosis was made at pathology. Surgery was elective in eight patients and emergent in one case of IgG4-related aortitis. 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT ( 18 F-FDG PET/CT) was performed for disease extension study and as a monitoring technique during the follow-up of five patients, with just one case performed presurgically. All the patients with IgG4-related disease showed extrathoracic aortic involvement. There were no deaths, neither in-hospital nor during the 1.7 years of median follow-up., Conclusions: In surgically treated thoracic aorta pathology, the frequency of aortitis is low; IgG4-related disease is among the most common aetiologies with a frequency similar to other types of aortitis, such as Takayasu's and giant cell arteritis, and clinical manifestations are non-specific making presurgical diagnosis difficult. 18 F-FDG PET/CT allows a better assessment of disease extension and therapeutic response. Species of the genus Lithobates are difficult to identify, especially on the 'Rana pipiens' complex, because the morphological differences among the species are often subtle. In this study, we used 12S ribosomal RNA gene partial sequences to identify specimens of leopard frogs from some new localities (not sampled on previous studies) of the Southern Mexican Plateau, to carry out a phylogenetic analysis, and also a morphometric analysis of some morphological features were analyzed to evaluate their morphological variation. A phylogenetic analysis using partial sequences of 12S rDNA mitochondrial gene for 31 samples was carried out using Bayesian Inference, Maximum Parsimony, and Maximum Likelihood. In addition, 20 morphological lineal measurements from 97 specimens were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA) to evaluate if the frogs studied are conspecific. Partial sequences of the 12S rDNA obtained from frogs distributed in the Southern Mexican Plateau show two haplotypes with a divergence of 0.4%. Phylogenetic hypothesis shows an exclusive group with a previous sequence of Lithobates montezumae . The PCA indicates that variables are not linearly correlated and specimens belong to a single group. Evidence found, let us consider that specimens studied belong to one species of the Lithobates montezumae subgroup, distributed principally in the Southern Mexican Plateau.

Aims: We aimed to study the differences in biventricular scar characterization using bipolar voltage mapping compared with state-of-the-art in vivo delayed gadolinium-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (LGE-CMR) imaging and ex vivo T1 mapping., Methods and Results: Ten pigs with established myocardial infarction (MI) underwent in vivo scar characterization using LGE-CMR imaging and high-density voltage mapping of both ventricles using a 3.5-mm tip catheter. Ex vivo post-contrast T1 mapping provided a high-resolution reference. Voltage maps were registered onto the left and right ventricular (LV and RV) endocardium, and epicardium of CMR-based geometries to compare voltage-derived scars with surface-projected 3D scars. Voltage-derived scar tissue of the LV endocardium and the epicardium resembled surface projections of 3D in vivo and ex vivo CMR-derived scars using 1-mm of surface projection distance. The thinner wall of the RV was especially sensitive to lower resolution in vivo LGE-CMR images, in which differences between normalized low bipolar voltage areas and CMR-derived scar areas did not decrease below a median of 8.84% [interquartile range (IQR) (3.58, 12.70%)]. Overall, voltage-derived scars and surface scar projections from in vivo LGE-CMR sequences showed larger normalized scar areas than high-resolution ex vivo images [12.87% (4.59, 27.15%), 18.51% (11.25, 24.61%), and 9.30% (3.84, 19.59%), respectively], despite having used optimized surface projection distances. Importantly, 43.02% (36.54, 48.72%) of voltage-derived scar areas from the LV endocardium were classified as non-enhanced healthy myocardium using ex vivo CMR imaging., Conclusion: In vivo LGE-CMR sequences and high-density voltage mapping using a conventional linear catheter fail to provide accurate characterization of post-MI scar, limiting the specificity of voltage-based strategies and imaging-guided procedures.

Background: There are very few studies about the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in Argentina., Objective: To determine the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in a population of inhabitants between the ages of 5 and 44 in Argentina., Methods: A cross-sectional national study in which a self-reported questionnaire was used. The included participants are between the ages of 5 and 44 and they reside in urban areas. The information was collected by phone., Results: 3200 participants were surveyed: 51.8% were women, 37.6% were between the ages of 5 and 19, and 62.4%, were between the ages of 20 and 44. The global prevalence of symptoms of allergic rhinitis was of 20.5%; the most frequent symptoms were sneezing (58.5%) and nasal congestion (51.4%). Overall, 44.3% of the participants had a family history of allergies. Allergic rhinitis was more frequent in women; the prevalence was of 22.3% in the group of participants between the ages of 5 and 19, and of 19.4% in the group of participants between the ages of 20 and 40 (p=0.0545); 63.8% of participants with symptoms did not have a medical diagnosis., Conclusions: The results of this first cross-sectional national survey have confirmed the high prevalence of self-reported symptoms of allergic rhinitis in adults and children in Argentina, particularly in women.

Key Message: Multi-trait genomic prediction models are useful to allocate available resources in breeding programs by targeted phenotyping of correlated traits when predicting expensive and labor-intensive quality parameters. Multi-trait genomic prediction models can be used to predict labor-intensive or expensive correlated traits where phenotyping depth of correlated traits could be larger than phenotyping depth of targeted traits, reducing resources and improving prediction accuracy. This is particularly important in the context of allocating phenotyping resource in plant breeding programs. The objective of this work was to evaluate multi-trait models predictive ability with different depth of phenotypic information from correlated traits. We evaluated 495 wheat advanced breeding lines for eight baking quality traits which were genotyped with genotyping-by-sequencing. Through different approaches for cross-validation, we evaluated the predictive ability of a single-trait model and a multi-trait model. Moreover, we evaluated different sizes of the training population (from 50 to 396 individuals) for the trait of interest, different depth of phenotypic information for correlated traits (50 and 100%) and the number of correlated traits to be used (one to three). There was no loss in the predictive ability by reducing the training population up to a 30% (149 individuals) when using correlated traits. A multi-trait model with one highly correlated trait phenotyped for both the training and testing sets was the best model considering phenotyping resources and the gain in predictive ability. The inclusion of correlated traits in the training and testing lines is a strategic approach to replace phenotyping of labor-intensive and high cost traits in a breeding program.

Glutamate-gated chloride channels (GluCls) are neurotransmitter receptors that mediate crucial inhibitory signaling in invertebrate neuromuscular systems. Their role in invertebrate physiology and their absence from vertebrates make GluCls a prime target for antiparasitic drugs. GluCls from flatworm parasites are substantially different from and are much less understood than those from roundworm and insect parasites, hindering the development of potential therapeutics targeting GluCls in flatworm-related diseases such as schistosomiasis. Here, we sought to dissect the molecular and chemical basis for ligand recognition in the extracellular glutamate binding site of SmGluCl-2 from Schistosoma mansoni, using site-directed mutagenesis, noncanonical amino acid incorporation, and electrophysiological recordings. Our results indicate that aromatic residues in ligand binding loops A, B, and C are important for SmGluCl-2 function. Loop C, which differs in length compared to other pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs), contributes to ligand recognition through both an aromatic residue and two vicinal threonine residues. We also show that, in contrast to other pLGICs, the hydrophobic channel gate in SmGluCl-2 extends from the 9' position to the 6' position in the channel-forming M2 helix. The 6' and 9' positions also seem to control sensitivity to the pore blocker picrotoxin.

Clostridium septicum produces a number of diseases in human and farm animals which, in most of the cases, are fatal without clinical intervention. Alpha toxin is an important agent and the unique lethal virulent factor produced by Clostridium septicum. This toxin is haemolytic, highly lethal and necrotizing activities but is being used as an antigen to develop animal vaccines. The aim of this study was to isolate the alpha toxin of Clostridium septicum and produce highly specific antibodies against it. In this work, we have developed a simple and efficient method for alpha toxin purification, based on electroelution that can be used as a time-saving method for purifying proteins. This technique avoids contamination by other proteins that could appear during other protein purification techniques such chromatography. The highly purified toxin was used to produce polyclonal antibodies. The specificity of the antibodies was tested by western blot and these antibodies can be applied to the quantitative determination of alpha toxin by slot blot., Competing Interests: The authors declare there are no competing interests.

The use of non-invasive spectral measurements to control the conservation status is a part of the preventive conservation of artworks which nowadays is becoming increasingly interesting. This paper describes how to use a spectral measuring device and an illumination system specifically designed for such a task in a very large dimension artwork painting (7.8 m wide × 3.5 m high). The system, controlled by a Cartesian robot, allows spectral measurements in a spectral range of 400-780 nm. The measured data array has a total of 2201 circular regions with 5.5 mm spot diameter placed on a square grid. Colorimetric calculations performed from these spectral measurements may be used to characterize color shifts related to reflectance changes in specific areas of the paint. The aim of this study was to evaluate the response of orange fruit (Citrus sinensis var. Valencia Late) to freezing stress in planta, both immediately after the natural event and after a week, in order to understand the biochemical and molecular basis of the changes that later derive in internal and external damage symptoms. Using two-dimensional differential gel electrophoresis to analyze exposed and non-exposed fruit, 27 differential protein spots were detected in juice sacs and flavedo, among all comparisons made. Also, primary and secondary metabolites relative contents were analyzed in both tissues by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, respectively. Proteins and compounds involved in regulatory functions, iron metabolism, oxidative damage and carbohydrate metabolism were the most affected. Interestingly, three glycolytic enzymes were induced by cold, and there was an increase in fermentation products (volatiles); all of that suggests that more energy generation might be required from glycolysis to counter the cold stress. Moreover, a notable increase in sugar levels was observed after frost, but it was not at the expense of organic acids utilization. Consequently, these results suggest a probable redistribution of photoassimilates in the frost-exposed plants, tending to restore the homeostasis altered by that severe type of stress. In this work an Intrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer (IFPI) based on an air-microcavity is presented. Here the air microcavity, with silica walls, is formed at a segment of a hollow core photonic crystal fiber (HCPCF), which is fusion spliced with a single mode fiber (SMF). Moreover, the spectral response of the IFPI is experimentally characterized and some results are provided. Finally, the viability to use the IFPI to implement a simple, compact size, and low cost refractive index sensor is briefly analyzed.

Human visual system is exposed to high levels of natural and artificial lights of different spectra and intensities along lifetime. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are the basic lighting components in screens of PCs, phones and TV sets; hence it is so important to know the implications of LED radiations on the human visual system. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of LEDs radiations on human retinal pigment epithelial cells (HRPEpiC). They were exposed to three light-darkness (12 h/12 h) cycles, using blue-468 nm, green-525 nm, red-616 nm and white light. Cellular viability of HRPEpiC was evaluated by labeling all nuclei with DAPI; Production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was determined by H2DCFDA staining; mitochondrial membrane potential was quantified by TMRM staining; DNA damage was determined by H2AX histone activation, and apoptosis was evaluated by caspases-3,-7 activation. It is shown that LED radiations decrease 75-99% cellular viability, and increase 66-89% cellular apoptosis. They also increase ROS production and DNA damage. Fluorescence intensity of apoptosis was 3.7% in nonirradiated cells and 88.8%, 86.1%, 83.9% and 65.5% in cells exposed to white, blue, green or red light, respectively. Purpose: To show the feasibility of modified point-diffraction interferometry for the qualitative analysis and accurate quantification of phase aberrations of eye lenses in vitro., Method: Optical aberrations of crystalline lenses in vitro were evaluated by means of a point-diffraction interferometer modified to increase its dynamic range., Results: Analysis of the Zernike polynomials, Z(m)(n), which contribute significantly to the wavefront aberration of two representative crystalline lenses (a mammalian and a fish lens) is presented. In the mammalian case, the in vitro experiments were performed for pig lenses. It is shown that spherical aberration, astigmatism, coma, and trefoil of different radial orders, n, are the only modes contributing significantly to wavefront aberration, i.e., aberrations with azimuthal frequencies, m, greater that three can be regarded as noise. In the case of fish lenses (sea bream), we show that the technique allows quantification of the deviation from the spherical symmetry which is commonly assumed for teleost fish lenses., Conclusions: Modified point-diffraction interferometry is a wavefront-sensing technique that can be used to accurately analyze phase aberrations in eye lenses and hence evaluate their contribution, in terms of significant aberrations, to the total aberrations of the eye.

We present a family of three-dimensional concentrators constructed from the photic field generated by a Lambertian emitter. The profile of these concentrators is obtained from the field lines for a two-dimensional truncated wedge and is based on the union between a hyperbola and a tilted parabola. By revolution of this profile, we obtain hyperparabolic concentrators (HPCs). In the limiting case when the focal length of the hyperbola becomes the radius of the exit aperture, the HPC becomes the well-known compound parabolic concentrator. On the other hand, when the focal length of the hyperbola becomes infinite, the HPC achieves the thermodynamic limit of concentration.
