The Unified Point-of-Service (UnifiedPOS), a global open standard for store-level systems, has finally gained approval following months of preparation by retail industry technologists. Based on the OLE Point of Sale and Java Point of Sale standards, UnifiedPOS unifies specifications for store-level technologies at points of service in a bid to boost flexibility and slash retail technology costs. It is called Unified Point-of-Service, not Unified Point-of-Sale, to emphasize the effort to standardize devices at all points of service, from the front end of the store to the back-end.

Four retail-specific standards groups are presented to define their mission and goal. The first is the Voluntary Interindustry Communications Standards or VICS.
