This paper introduces the double-pass imaging background-oriented schlieren (DPBOS) technique to overcome a defocusing problem of conventional background-oriented schlieren (BOS) systems. In the conventional BOS system, a camera focuses on a background situated behind a measurement target, which inevitably causes a blurred image of the target. The advantage of the proposed technique, using a digital projector with proper optical alignment, is that the camera focuses on both the target and the background image at the same time. Therefore, measurement in the vicinity of the target can be achieved with higher sensitivity than that of the conventional BOS system. For validation, a test target (lens) and the density field near a heat sink are measured using the DPBOS. The results show good agreement with theoretical prediction and exhibit higher sensitivity than the conventional and telecentric BOS system. In addition, the accuracy of DPBOS was assessed by comparing the calculated surface temperatures from the displacement of DPBOS and conventional BOS with the corresponding theoretical temperature. As the results, the DPBOS and conventional BOS have errors of 3% and 9%, respectively. Introduction: Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve several physiological adaptations crucial for offspring care. Recent research has highlighted reproduction-related brain plasticity in human mothers. Associations with aspects of maternal caregiving suggest adaptive changes that facilitate a woman's transition to motherhood. However, the dynamic changes that affect a woman's brain are not merely adaptive, and they likely confer a vulnerability for the mental disorders. To elucidate the pathophysiology of psychiatric problems that occur during the perinatal period, gaining insights into the physiological changes in brain function due to pregnancy is crucial. Objectives: Although it has been hypothesized that pregnancy enhances social cognitive functions in mothers to adapt to the offspring care, there are few reports to support this hypothesis. This study aims to investigate whether social cognitive functions change during the first pregnancy, with a focus on maternal adaptation to offspring care. Methods: The study included a first pregnancy group and a never-pregnant control group. We conducted a prospective study comparing pregnant women between two-time points (T1, T2); at less than 21 weeks of gestation [T1] and those after 30 weeks of gestation [T2]. To assess the effects of pregnancy and gestational age (< 21 weeks or 30 weeks or more), both the control (never-pregnant) group and pregnant group were evaluated at two time points with similar intervals. The Emotion Recognition Task [ERT] of the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) was performed to examine the emotion recognition of six basic emotions in facial expressions. We analyzed a cohort of 26 participants in the pregnant group and 25 in the control group. We performed a two-way repeated measures analysis of variance with pregnancy status and gestational period (T1, T2) as independent variables. Results: Significant interactions between group and time points (T1, T2) were observed only for Unbiased Hit Rate Anger (p<0.01); facial recognition accuracy for anger increased with the progression of pregnancy. There were no significant interactions for Unbiased Hit Rate Sadness, Happiness, Fear, Disgust, or Surprise. Conclusions: This is the first study to demonstrate that facial recognition of anger enhances with the progression of pregnancy, utilizing never-pregnant women as a never-pregnant control group. The results of this study contribute to the physiological effects of pregnancy on the brain and cognitive function and have potential for further study of perinatal mental health problems. Context. Although heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been found by many observational studies, the properties of the surrounding dust are poorly understood. Using AKARI/IRC spectroscopy, we discovered a new heavily obscured AGN in LEDA 1712304 which shows a deep spectral absorption feature due to silicate dust. Aims. We study the infrared (IR) spectral properties of circumnuclear silicate dust in LEDA 1712304. Methods. We performed IR spectral fitting, considering silicate dust properties such as composition, porosity, size, and crystallinity. Spectral energy distribution fitting was also performed on the flux densities in the UV to submillimeter range to investigate the global spectral properties. Results. The best-fit model indicates 0.1 μm-sized porous amorphous olivine (Mg2xFe2−2xSiO4; x = 0.4) with 4% crystalline pyroxene. The optical depth is τsil ∼ 2.3, while the total IR luminosity and stellar mass are estimated to be LIR = (5 ± 1)×1010 L⊙ and Mstar = (2.7 ± 0.8)×109 M⊙, respectively. In such low LIR and Mstar ranges, there are few galaxies that show such a large τsil. Conclusion. The silicate dust in the AGN torus of LEDA 1712304 has properties that are notably similar to those in other AGNs overall, but slightly different in the wing shape of the absorption profile. The porosity of the silicate dust suggests dust coagulation or processing in the circumnuclear environments, while the crystallinity suggests that the silicate dust is relatively fresh. Context. The properties of the dust in the cold and hot gas phases of early-type galaxies (ETGs) are key to understanding ETG evolution. Aims. We aim to conduct a systematic study of the dust in a large sample of local ETGs, focusing on relations between the dust and the molecular, atomic, and X-ray gas of the galaxies, as well as their environment. Methods. We estimated the dust temperatures and masses of the 260 ETGs from the ATLAS3D survey, using fits to their spectral energy distributions primarily constructed from AKARI measurements. We also used literature measurements of the cold (CO and H I) and X-ray gas phases. Results. Our ETGs show no correlation between their dust and stellar masses, suggesting inefficient dust production by stars and/or dust destruction in X-ray gas. The global dust-to-gas mass ratios of ETGs are generally lower than those of late-type galaxies, likely due to dust-poor H I envelopes in ETGs. They are also higher in Virgo Cluster ETGs than in group and field ETGs, but the same ratios measured in the central parts of the galaxies only are independent of galaxy environment. Slow-rotating ETGs have systematically lower dust masses than fast-rotating ETGs. The dust masses and X-ray luminosities are correlated in fast-rotating ETGs, whose star formation rates are also correlated with the X-ray luminosities. Conclusions. The correlation between dust and X-rays in fast-rotating ETGs appears to be caused by residual star formation, while slow-rotating ETGs are likely well evolved, and have therefore exhausted their dust. These results appear consistent with the postulated evolution of ETGs, whereby fast-rotating ETGs form by mergers of late-type galaxies and associated bulge growth, while slow-rotating ETGs form by (dry) mergers of fast-rotating ETGs. Aims To test the hypothesis that 1-h plasma glucose in an oral glucose tolerance test is a better predictor of the development of diabetes than 2-h plasma glucose, independently of indices of insulin secretion or action in Japanese adults. Methods A historical cohort study was conducted in 1445 Japanese workers who did not have diabetes. The association between 1-h plasma glucose and the development of Type 2 diabetes was analysed. Results Overall, 95 of the study participants developed Type 2 diabetes during a mean follow-up of 4.5 years. The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve for 1-h plasma glucose for future diabetes [0.88 (95% CI 0.84-0.91)] was greater than that for 2-h plasma glucose [0.79 (95% CI 0.74-0.84)], and for insulinogenic [0.73 (95% CI 0.68-0.78)] and disposition indices [0.79 (95% CI 0.74-0.84); P < 0.05]. Compared with the first quartile, the hazard ratio for future diabetes in the fourth quartile of 1-h plasma glucose was 42.5 [95% CI 5.7-315.2 ( P < 0.05)] and the hazard ratio in the fourth quartile of 2-h plasma glucose was 4.4 [95% CI 1.8-10.8 ( P < 0.05)], after adjustments for covariates including fasting plasma glucose. The significance of the elevated hazard ratio in the fourth quartile of 1-h plasma glucose was maintained after adjustments for 2-h plasma glucose, insulinogenic index or disposition index, whereas the elevation of the hazard ratio in the fourth quartile of 2-h plasma glucose was diminished and was no longer significant after adjustments for 1-h plasma glucose. Conclusions One-hour plasma glucose had a greater association with the future development of Type 2 diabetes than did 2-h plasma glucose, independently of oral glucose tolerance test-derived indices of insulin action in a Japanese population. We used a data set from AKARI and Herschel images at wavelengths from 7 to 500  $\mu$ m to catch the evidence of dust processing in galactic winds in NGC 1569. Images show a diffuse infrared (IR) emission extending from the galactic disc into the halo region. The most prominent filamentary structure seen in the diffuse IR emission is spatially in good agreement with the western H α filament (western arm). The spatial distribution of the F350/F500 map shows high values in regions around the super-star clusters (SSCs) and towards the western arm, which are not found in the F250/F350 map. The colour–colour diagram of F250/F350–F350/F500 indicates high values of the emissivity power-law index (βc) of the cold dust component in those regions. From a spectral decomposition analysis on a pixel-by-pixel basis, a βc map shows values ranging from ∼1 to ∼2 over the whole galaxy. In particular, high βc values of ∼2 are observed only in the regions indicated by the colour–colour diagram. Since the average cold dust temperature in NGC 1569 is ∼30 K, βc < 2.0 in the far-IR and sub-mm region theoretically suggests emission from amorphous grains, while βc = 2.0 suggests that from crystal grains. Given that the enhanced βc regions are spatially confined by the H i ridge that is considered to be a birthplace of the SSCs, the spatial coincidences may indicate that dust grains around the SSCs are grains of relatively high crystallinity injected by massive stars originating from starburst activities and that those grains are blown away along the H i ridge and thus the western arm. Although high atmospheric temperatures suppress anthocyanin accumulation in most plant species, we show that high temperatures accelerate anthocyanin pigmentation in flower tepals of Asiatic hybrid lilies (Lilium spp.). After incubation at high temperatures (35 °C) for two days, anthocyanin color became deeper in the most of tepal parts of two Asiatic hybrid lily cultivars, although the basal parts of 'Montreux' tepals and top parts of 'Toronto' outer tepals were whitened. Environmental stimuli often affect the expression of R2R3-MYB positive regulators that control anthocyanin biosynthesis. Although their expression is often suppressed by hot temperatures in other species, the expression of lily MYB12 in tepals was upregulated by high temperatures. MicroRNA828 (miR828), which suppresses the action of MYB12 post-transcriptionally, exhibited reduced accumulation levels under high temperature, indicating that miR828 regulation is involved in MYB12 upregulation. In addition, transcription levels of MYB12, estimated by unspliced MYB12 transcript accumulation, were also activated by high temperatures. Thus, both suppressed miR828 accumulation and increased MYB12 transcription are likely to be involved in MYB12 activation at high temperatures. In the whitened basal parts of 'Montreux' tepals at 35 °C, expression of bHLH2 was severely suppressed while that of MYB12 was not affected. The present results demonstrate that plants display diverse responses to hot climatic conditions and shed new light on anthocyanin regulation under various environmental conditions. Context. The star formation properties of early-type galaxies (ETGs) are currently the subject of considerable interest, particularly whether they differ from the star formation properties of gas-rich spirals. Aims. We perform a systematic study of star formation in a large sample of local ETGs with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and dust emission, focusing on the star formation rates (SFRs) and star formation efficiencies (SFEs) of the galaxies. Methods. Our sample is composed of the 260 ETGs from the ATLAS3D survey, from which we used the cold gas measurements (H i and CO). We estimated the SFRs from stellar, PAH, and dust fits to spectral energy distributions created from new AKARI measurements and with literature data from WISE and 2MASS. Results. The mid-infrared luminosities of non-CO-detected galaxies are well correlated with their stellar luminosities, showing that they trace (circum)stellar dust emission. CO-detected galaxies show an excess above these correlations, uncorrelated with their stellar luminosities, indicating that they likely contain PAHs and dust of interstellar origin. PAH and dust luminosities of CO-detected galaxies show tight correlations with their molecular gas masses; the derived current SFRs are typically 0.01-1 M☉ yr-1. These SFRs systematically decrease with stellar age at fixed stellar mass, while they correlate nearly linearly with stellar mass at fixed age. The majority of local ETGs follow the same star formation law as local star-forming galaxies and their current SFEs do not depend on either stellar mass or age. Conclusions. Our results clearly indicate that molecular gas is fueling current star formation in local ETGs, which appear to acquire this gas via mechanisms regulated primarily by stellar mass. The current SFEs of local ETGs are similar to those of local star-forming galaxies, indicating that their low SFRs are likely due to smaller cold gas fractions rather than a suppression of star formation. We have previously demonstrated that human olfactory epithelia can be classified into five grades according to the degree of degeneration present in patients with various kinds of olfactory disorders. In practice, however, the occurrence of additional types of cell changes in other kinds of olfactory disorders and findings with immunohistochemical techniques have led us to re-evaluate our previous classification. In the present study, changes in olfactory epithelia from ten patients with various kinds of olfactory disorders are discussed and a revised classification is proposed. Aims. We investigate the properties of hydrocarbon grains in the galactic superwind of M 82. Methods. With AKARI, we performed near-infrared (2.5-4.5 μm) spectroscopic observations of 34 regions in M 82 including its northern and southern halos. Results. Many of the spectra show strong emission at 3.3 μm caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and relatively weak features at 3.4-3.6 μm caused by aliphatic hydrocarbons. In particular, we clearly detect the PAH 3.3 μm emission and the 3.4-3.6 μm features in halo regions, which are located at a distance of 2 kpc away from the galactic center. We find that the ratios of the 3.4-3.6 μm features to the 3.3 μm feature intensity significantly increase with distance from the galactic center, while the ratios of the 3.3 μm feature to the AKARI 7 μm band intensity do not. Conclusions. Our results clearly confirm the presence of small PAHs even in the harsh environment of the halo of M 82. The results also reveal that the aliphatic hydrocarbons emitting the 3.4-3.6 μm features are unusually abundant in the halo, suggesting that small carbonaceous grains are produced by shattering of larger grains in the galactic superwind. Aims: Mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) blockade is an effective treatment for hypertension and diabetic nephropathy. There are no data on the effects of MR blockade on diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). The aim of this study was to determine whether MRs are present in the peripheral nerves and to investigate the effectiveness of MR blockade on DPN in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Methods: Expression of MR protein and messenger RNA (mRNA) was examined in the peripheral nerves using Western blot analysis and RT-PCR. We next studied the effects of the selective MR antagonist eplerenone and the angiotensin II receptor blocker candesartan on motor and sensory nerve conduction velocity (NCV), morphometric changes and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) gene and NF- κB protein expression in the peripheral nerves of STZ-induced diabetic rats. Results: Expression of MR protein and mRNA in peripheral nerves was equal to that in the kidney. Motor NCV was significantly improved by 8 weeks of treatment with either eplerenone (39.1 ± 1.2 m/s) or candesartan (46.4 ± 6.8 m/s) compared with control diabetic rats (33.7 ± 2.0 m/s) (p < 0.05). Sensory NCV was also improved by treatment with candesartan or eplerenone in diabetic rats. Eplerenone and candesartan caused significant improvement in mean myelin fibre area and mean myelin area compared with control diabetic rats (p < 0.05). COX-2 mRNA and NF- κB protein were significantly elevated in the peripheral nerves of diabetic rats compared with control rats, and treatment with eplerenone or candesartan reduced these changes in gene expression (p < 0.05). The West Indian sweetpotato weevil Euscepes postfasciatus (Fairmaire) is a major pest of the sweet potato Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. and this weevil is a target of an eradication program using the Sterile Insect Technique in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. Understanding the population ecology is essential in the planning of an eradication program; hence, a host-plant infestation survey and light trap survey have been conducted to monitor the population dynamics of the weevil on Kume Island (Okinawa Prefecture), which is the target area of the trial weevil eradication project. Seasonal tendencies of weevil density were found in these field surveys, but the tendency found in the host-plant infestation survey was not seen every year, and the effectiveness of the light trap is somewhat suspect. To confirm the reliability of the tendency observed in these field surveys, the present study attempted to explain the tendency by a seasonal temperature change using a temperature-based model of weevil population dynamics. The seasonal changes of weevil density differed according to host plants and host-plant fields. The seasonal changes of weevil density inside the host plant Ipomoea indica and outside the host plants in I. indica fields were consistent with those predicted by the model. However, those inside the host plant Ipomoea pes-caprae in the host-plant infestation survey were contrary to the predicted ones, and those observed outside host plants in I. pes-caprae fields by the light trap survey were not in good agreement with the predicted ones. It was concluded that the seasonal change of the weevil density observed in I. indica and I. indica fields can be explained by a seasonal temperature change, but factors other than seasonal temperature change are needed to explain those in I. pes-caprae and I. pes-caprae fields. With 6 figures and 2 tables To elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of carotenoid accumulation in tepals of Asiatic hybrid lily ( Lilium spp.), the content and composition of carotenoids and transcriptional changes of carotenoid biosynthetic genes were compared between tepals of yellow, red, pink and white flowers. Yellow and red tepal cultivars accumulated high amounts of carotenoids, and cultivars with pink and white tepals accumulated small amounts of carotenoids. Most of the carotenoids in yellow petals were antheraxanthin, (9 Z)-violaxanthin, cis-lutein and violaxanthin. Capsanthin was accumulated in red tepals. Transcription of phytoene synthase, phytoene desaturase, ζ-carotene desaturase, carotenoid isomerase and β-ring hydroxylase in tepals increased as tepals grew. Among yellow and red tepal cultivars, the amounts of carotenoids were well associated with the transcription levels of biosynthetic genes, indicating that transcription levels regulate carotenoid accumulation in these cultivars. However, in pink and white tepals, the transcription levels of biosynthetic genes were similar to those in red tepals, indicating that small amounts of carotenoids are not explained by down-regulation of biosynthetic genes. Although advances in the management of spinal injuries during the past 60 years have led to greatly increased life expectancy for paralysed patients, most remain disabled. Around the world, spinal injury centres have become specialized rehabilitation units, where staff accepts the inevitability of persisting paralysis. In part, this pessimism has been based on incorrect information about the anatomy and function of the circulation of the spinal cord. Since the publication of accurate descriptions of the segmental nature of spinal vasculature, research and clinical data suggest that reversal or prevention of paralysis after spinal injury may be possible in many patients. These improved outcomes will depend on the recognition that urgent correction of cord blood supply in patients with traumatic spinal injury is critical to the long-term results of treatment. The creation of specialist spinal units within trauma centres for the urgent treatment of patients following spinal injury will require considerable logistical change, but has the potential to lead to a revolution in spinal care, driven by the knowledge that spinal cord function can often be saved. Objective: To clarify the mechanism of improvement in exercise capacity after the maze procedure.Design: Retrospective study.Setting: Tertiary referral centre.Patients: 26 patients (mean (SD) age 57 (9) years) with atrial fibrillation (AF) and mitral valve disease were studied with echocardiography and cardiopulmonary exercise testing before and after the maze procedure combined with mitral valve surgery. Of these, eight had persistent AF and 18 had restored sinus rhythm (SR) by the surgery. Six patients (mean (SD) age 59 (12) years) with AF undergoing mitral valve surgery without the maze procedure who had cardiopulmonary exercise testing before and after the surgery formed the control group.Main Outcome Measures: Echocardiographic parameters of atrial function were measured from transmitral flow recordings. Peak oxygen uptake (VO2) and the slope of the relation between VO2 and workload (ratio of DeltaVO2 to Delta work) were determined as indices of exercise capacity.Results: The degree of improvements in peak VO2 and the ratio of DeltaVO2 to Delta work after the mitral valve surgery was comparable between the maze and control group. It was also comparable between patients with and those without successfully restored SR after the maze procedure. The degree of the increase in peak VO2 correlated with the change in left atrial diameter (r = -0.40, p = 0.047) but atrial contraction did not correlate with the increase.Conclusions: Improvement in exercise capacity may not be caused by restored SR and atrial contraction but may at least partly relate to the reduction of left atrial size and improvement of haemodynamic variables by the surgery. We previously surveyed chromosomal regions showing segregation distortion of RFLP markers in the F2 population from the cross between a japonica type variety `Nipponbare' and an indica type variety `Milyang23', and showed that the most skewed segregation appeared on the short arm of chromosome 3. By comparison with the marker loci where distortion factors were previously identified, this region was assumed to be a gametophytic selection-2 (ga2) gene region. To evaluate this region, two near isogenic lines (NILs) were developed. One NIL had the `Nipponbare' segment of this region on the genetic background of `Milyang23' (NIL9-23), and the other NIL had the `Milyang23' segment on the genetic background of `Nipponbare' (NIL33-18). NIL9-23 and `Milyang23', NIL33-18 and `Nipponbare', and `Nipponbare' and `Milyang23' were respectively crossed to produce F1 and F2 populations. The F1 plants of NIL9-23 × `Milyang23' and NIL33-18 × `Nipponbare' showed high seed fertility and the same pollen fertility as their parental cultivars, indicating that ga2 does not reduce seed and pollen fertility. Segregation ratio of a molecular marker on the ga2 region in the three F2 populations was investigated to clarify whether segregation distortion occurred on the different genetic backgrounds. Segregation distortion of the ga2 region appeared in the both F2 populations from the NIL9-23 and `Milyang23' cross (background was `Milyang23' homozygote) and the `Nipponbare' and `Milyang23' cross (background was heterozygote), but did not in the F2 population from the NIL33-18 and `Nipponbare' cross (background was `Nipponbare' homozygote). This result indicates that ga2 interacts with a `Milyang23' allele(s) on the different chromosomal region(s) to cause skewed segregation of the ga2 region. In addition, segregation ratio was the same between the F2 populations from NIL9-23 × `Milyang23' and `Nipponbare' × `Milyang23' crosses, suggesting that the both genotypes, `Milyang23' homozygote and heterozygote, of gene(s) located on the different chromosomal region(s) have the same effect on the segregation distortion. We report spectroscopic and photometric follow-up of the peculiar nova V5852 Sgr (discovered as OGLE-2015-NOVA-01), which exhibits a combination of features from different classes nova. The photometry shows a flat-topped light curve with quasi-periodic oscillations, then a smooth decline followed by two fainter recoveries in brightness. Spectroscopy with the Southern African Large Telescope shows first a classical nova with an Fe II or Fe II b spectral type. In the latter spectrum, broad emissions from helium, nitrogen and oxygen are prominent, and the iron has faded which could be an indication to the start of the nebular phase. The line widths suggest ejection velocities around 1000 km s-1. The nova is in the direction of the Galactic bulge and is heavily reddened by an uncertain amount. The V magnitude 16 days after maximum enables a distance to be estimated and this suggests that the nova may be in the extreme trailing stream of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy. If so it is the first nova to be detected from that, or from any dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Given the uncertainty of the method and the unusual light curve we cannot rule out the possibility that it is in the bulge or even the Galactic disk behind the bulge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary¶Background. A variety of procedures for reconstructing the spine following the removal of spinal cord and cauda equina tumours have been developed to prevent postoperative spinal deformities and nerve entrapment. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new reconstructive procedure based on rotational laminoplasty and to report preliminary results in a small series. Method. The trough is drilled at the border of the laminae and articular processes and the ligamentum flavum is resected on its cephalocaudal aspect, so the vertebral arch can be separated as a single mass. After tumour resection, the vertebral arch is removed en bloc with the laminae, and is rotated 90 degrees and placed on the articular facets and fixed using suture passing through holes drilled in the bone. Findings. One man and six women underwent rotational laminoplasty following resection of spinal or cauda equina tumours. Operative exposure was good and permitted complete resection. Patients did well postoperatively from both spine-surgical and neurolosurgical points of view. Computed tomography documented a bony union with preservation of widely patent spinal canal. Interpretation. Rotational laminoplasty affords a satisfactory operative exposure for the resection of large, complex lesions. We report the current status of the development of our new detectors for far-infrared (FIR) astronomy. We develop Blocked-Impurity-Band (BIB)-type Ge detectors to realize large-format compact arrays covering a wide FIR wavelength range up to 200 $$\upmu $$ m. We fabricated Ge junction devices of different physical parameters with a BIB-type structure, using the room temperature, surface-activated wafer bonding (SAB) method. We measured the absolute responsivity and the spectral response curve of each device at low temperatures, using an internal blackbody source in a cryostat and a Fourier transform spectrometer, respectively. The results show that the SAB Ge junction devices have significantly higher absolute responsivities and longer cut-off wavelengths of the spectral response than the conventional bulk Ge:Ga device. Based upon the results, we discuss the optimum parameters of SAB Ge junction devices for FIR detectors. We conclude that SAB Ge junction devices possess a promising applicability to next-generation FIR detectors covering wavelengths up to $$\sim $$ 200 $$\upmu $$ m with high responsivity. Financial resources for quality assurance in Japanese hospitals are limited and few hospitals have quality monitoring systems of nursing service systems. However, recently its necessity has been recognized. This study has cost effectively used adverse event occurrence rates as indicators of the quality of nursing service, and audited methods of collecting data on adverse events to elucidate their approximate true numbers. Data collection was conducted in July, August and November 2000 at a hospital in Tokyo that administered both primary and secondary health care services (281 beds, six wards, average length of stay 23 days). We collected adverse events through incident reports, logs, check-lists, nurse interviews, medication error questionnaires, urine leucocyte tests, patient interviews and medical records. Adverse events included the unplanned removals of invasive lines, medication errors, falls, pressure sores, skin deficiencies, physical restraints, and nosocomial infections. After evaluating the time and useful outcomes of each source, it soon became clear that we could elucidate adverse events most consistently and cost-effectively through incident reports, check lists, nurse interviews, urine leucocyte tests and medication error questionnaires. A 73-year-old man with a history of bronchial asthma and atrial fibrillation was admitted to our hospital because of dyspnea and back pain. Blood analysis revealed a marked increase in total blood cell and eosinophil counts. The creatine kinase and creatine kinase-MB increased slightly. The ECG demonstrated significant ST-segment depression that mimicked acute posterior myocardial infarction. Emergent coronary angiography showed no stenotic lesions. The histological findings in endomyocardial biopsy showed thickened endocardium associated with significant eosinophilic infiltration, which was compatible with Löffler's endocarditis. After the administration of prednisolone, the patient's general condition, eosinophilia, ECG abnormalities, and histological findings were improved dramatically. To understand the genetic background of two floral anthocyanin pigmentation traits, anthocyanin pigmentation in the flower tepals and spot formation, in the Asiatic hybrid lily (2n = 24), segregation of the two traits among 96 F1 plants derived from a cross between commercial cultivars 'Montreux' and 'Connecticut King' were investigated. 'Montreux' has anthocyanin pigmentation in the tepals with many spots, and 'Connecticut King' has flowers with carotenoid pigmentation without spots. The F1 plants with or without anthocyanin pigment in the tepals segregated with a 1:1 segregation ratio, indicating that a single gene controls anthocyanin pigmentation in the tepals. The number of spots per square centimeter of all tepals showed continuous distribution in the F1 plants. To map the loci for the two anthocyanin pigmentation traits, molecular linkage maps in the Asiatic hybrid lily were constructed using a double pseudo-testcross strategy, with the same F1 plants used for phenotypic evaluation, and 212 PCR-based DNA markers. The trait for anthocyanin pigmentation in tepals was used as a trait marker. The map of 'Montreux' comprised 95 markers in 26 linkage groups, and the map of 'Connecticut King' used 119 markers in 24 linkage groups. The total map lengths were 867.5 and 1,114.8 cM, respectively. The trait locus for anthocyanin pigmentation in the tepals was between markers ASR35-180 and P506-40 in linkage group 1 of the 'Montreux' map with a map distance of 1.2 cM and 2.6 cM, respectively. A single-point analysis of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for tepal spot number identified two putative QTLs in linkage groups 1 and 19 of the 'Connecticut King' map. One putative QTL in linkage group 19 explained 64% of the total phenotypic variation. Because both putative QTLs were mapped on the linkage map of 'Connecticut King' that has no spots, dominant alleles of them might suppress spot formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Risks of atherosclerotic events substantially vary even among patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) with extremely high risk based on life-long exposure to high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. This study aimed to examine the impact of the severe FH status defined by the International Atherosclerosis Society (IAS). Data of patients with FH (N = 1050, male = 490) who were admitted to Kanazawa University Hospital between 2000 and 2020 and who were followed up were retrospectively reviewed. The number of major adverse cardiac events (MACEs), including mortality associated with cardiovascular disease, acute coronary syndrome, and ischemic heart disease requiring coronary revascularization per 1000 person-years, was calculated. Hazard ratio was also calculated using Cox proportional model. Overall, 545 (51.9%) patients had severe FH. The median follow-up duration was 12.6 years. In total, 171 MACEs were recorded during the follow-up period. Severe FH was significantly associated with MACE (hazard ratio = 6.48, 95% confidence interval = 2.56–10.40, P = 1.2 × 10−5). The event rates per 1000 person-years in the primary prevention group of non-severe FH and severe FH, were 0.0 and 15.6, respectively. The event rates per 1000 person-years in the secondary prevention group of non-severe FH and severe FH, were 2.0 and 32.3, respectively. Patients with severe FH exhibited significantly higher risks in primary and secondary prevention settings. Petal spots are widespread in plants, they are important for attracting pollinators and as economic traits in crop breeding. However, the genetic and developmental control of petal spots has seldom been investigated. To further clarify the development of petal spots formation, we performed comparative transcriptome analysis of Lilium davidii var. unicolor and Lilium davidii petals at the full-bloom stage. In comparison with the parental species L. davidii, petals of the lily variety L. davidii var. unicolor do not have the distinct anthocyanin spots. We show that among 7846 differentially expressed genes detected, LdMYB12 was identified as a candidate gene contributing to spot formation in lily petals. The expression level of LdMYB12 in the petals of L. davidii was higher than that in L. davidii var. unicolor petals. Moreover, overexpression of LdMYB12 led to the appearance of spots on the petals of L. davidii var. unicolor, accompanied by increased expression of anthocyanin synthesis-related genes. The spatially and temporally distinct expression of R2R3-MYB positive regulators is among the major mechanisms that create various anthocyanin color patterns in many flowers. However, we do not know how these positive regulators have gained different expression profiles. In the Asiatic hybrid lily 'Lollypop' (derived from the crosses of species belonging to Sinomartagon/Daurolirion section), MYB12 and MYB19S regulate the pigmentation at whole tepals and raised tepal spots, respectively. In the Oriental hybrid lily 'Sorbonne' (derived from the crosses of species belonging to the Archelirion section), MYB12 regulates both whole tepal and raised spot pigmentation. The genes have similar amino acid sequences with similar protein functions but exhibit different expression profiles in lily flowers. As promoters are among the most significant factors affecting gene expression profiles, their promoter sequences were determined in this study. The three genes had very different promoter sequences, and putative cis-regulatory elements were not conserved in numbers or order. To further confirm the promoter functions, tobacco plants were transformed with native promoter-driven MYB12 or MYB19S genes of 'Lollypop.' Expression levels of MYB12 were higher in corolla tubes than in lobes, while those of MYB19S were higher in corolla lobes than in tubes. Thus, the diverse promoter functions were likely to be the leading causes of their different expression profiles and generation of unique color patterns. To determine objectively the degree of olfactory disturbance, we biopsied the olfactory mucosa from patients who complained of anosmia. The olfactory disturbances in this study were caused by choanal atresia, chronic sinusitis, viral inflammation, and head trauma, as well as by congenital and idiopathic anosmia. The biopsy specimens were examined by light microscopy and the degree of mucosal degeneration present was classified according to five grades. To clarify the effect of the type of in vitro culture on the generation of somaclonal variation, protoplast-derived rice plants were compared with rice plants derived from suspension culture or primary calli (not derived from protoplasts). Regenerated plants showing polyploid-like phenotypes appeared at a higher frequency (33-70%) in plants derived from protoplasts than in those not derived from protoplasts (3-6%). In the first progeny (R[SUB1]) generation of all regenerated plants, 120 of 368 lines (33%) segregated plants with mutated characters such as albino, dwarf and sterile. In quantitative traits, 62(21%) and 144(50%) of 290 lines showed shorter culm and lower seed-fertility, respectively, compared with the control line derived from the selfed seeds of the original cultivar. The frequency of the mutant-possessing R[SUB1] lines among lines derived from protoplasts was not significantly different from those not derived from protoplasts. Aims To investigate whether the elevation of liver enzymes is associated with the progression from normal to impaired glucose tolerance. Methods A historical cohort study was conducted in 594 male workers at public schools, who had normal glucose tolerance at baseline. The progression to impaired glucose tolerance and impaired fasting glycaemia during a mean follow-up of 3.1 years was measured using an oral glucose tolerance test. Results Overall, 141 (23.7%) subjects developed impaired glucose tolerance and 68 (11.4%) subjects developed impaired fasting glycaemia, 23 of whom had combined impaired fasting glycaemia/impaired glucose tolerance. The incidence of impaired glucose tolerance increased significantly with increasing quartiles of serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and γ-glutamyltransferase ( P for trend <0.01). In Cox proportional hazards regression analysis, after adjusting for comprehensive risk factors, including plasma glucose levels, BMI and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance, the risk of progression to impaired glucose tolerance was significantly higher in the highest quartile of alanine aminotransferase than in the lowest quartile (hazard ratio 2.5; 95% CI 1.1-5.7). A significant association between alanine aminotransferase and the progression to impaired glucose tolerance was found after further adjustments for other liver enzymes or after the sample was limited to those with BMI < 25.0 kg/m2 or with fasting plasma glucose < 5.5 mmol/l. Conclusions A higher level of alanine aminotransferase was independently associated with progression from normal to impaired glucose tolerance in Japanese men. Aims. We investigate the large-scale structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) around the massive star cluster RCW 38 in the [CII] 158 μm line and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission. Methods. We carried out [CII] line mapping of an area of ∼30′ × 15′ for RCW 38 by a Fabry-Perot spectrometer on a 100 cm balloon-borne telescope with an angular resolution of ∼1′.5. We compared the [CII] intensity map with the PAH and dust emission maps obtained by the AKARI satellite. Results. The [CII] emission shows a highly nonuniform distribution around the cluster, exhibiting the structure widely extended to the north and the east from the center. The [CII] intensity rapidly drops toward the southwest direction, where a CO cloud appears to dominate. We decompose the 3-160 μm spectral energy distributions of the surrounding ISM structure into PAH as well as warm and cool dust components with the help of 2.5-5 μm spectra. Conclusions. We find that the [CII] emission spatially corresponds to the PAH emission better than to the dust emission, confirming the relative importance of PAHs for photo-electric heating of gas in photo-dissociation regions. A naive interpretation based on our observational results indicates that molecular clouds associated with RCW 38 are located both on the side of and behind the cluster. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: We aimed to determine if coronary artery calcium (CAC) is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, defined as CVD-related death, unstable angina, myocardial infarction, or staged revascularization among patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH) under primary prevention settings. Methods and results: Data of patients with FH admitted to Kanazawa University Hospital between 2000 and 2020, who underwent CAC measurement and were followed up (n = 622, male = 306, mean age = 54 years), were retrospectively reviewed. Risk factors for CVD events were determined using the Cox proportional hazard model. The median follow-up duration was 13.2 years (interquartile range: 9.8–18.4 years). We observed 132 CVD events during the follow-up period. The event rate per 1000 person-years for CAC scores of 0 [n = 283 (45.5%)], 1–100 [n = 260 (41.8%)], and >100 [n = 79 (12.7%)] was 1.2, 17.0, and 78.8, respectively. Log (CAC score + 1) was a significant predictor of the occurrence of CVD events (hazard ratio: 3.24; 95% confidence interval: 1.68–4.80; P < 0.0001) in the multivariate Cox regression analysis, independent of other factors. The risk discrimination of CVD events was enhanced by adding CAC information to other conventional risk factors (C-statistics: 0.833–0.934; P < 0.0001). The bulb formation of Lilium is affected by many physiological and biochemical phenomena, including flower bud differentiation, starch and sucrose accumulation, photoperiod, carbon fixation, plant hormone transduction, etc. The transcriptome analysis of flower buds of Lilium hybrid 'Siberia' at different maturity stages showed that floral bud formation is associated with the accumulation of anthocyanins. The results of HPLC-MS showed that cyanidin is the major anthocyanin found in Lilium 'Siberia'. Transcriptome KEGG enrichment analysis and qRT-PCR validation showed that two genes related to flavonoid biosynthesis (LhANS-rr1 and LhDFR) were significantly up-regulated. The functional analysis of differential genes revealed that LhMYB114 was directly related to anthocyanin accumulation among 19 MYB transcription factors. Furthermore, the qRT-PCR results suggested that their expression patterns were very similar at different developmental stages of the lily bulbs. Virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) revealed that down-regulation of LhANS-rr1, LhDFR, and LhMYB114 could directly lead to a decrease in anthocyanin accumulation, turning the purple phenotype into a white color. Moreover, this is the first report to reveal that LhMYB114 can regulate anthocyanin accumulation at the mature stage of lily bulbs. The accumulation of anthocyanins is an important sign of lily maturity. Backfat thickness affects the preservation of the beef carcass after slaughter and confers organoleptic characteristics assessed by the consumer. One of the breeding goals for Canchim, a tropically adapted breed, is to comprehensively increase fat thickness. Our goals were to identify genomic regions associated with backfat in Canchim populations and validate the association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) overlapping previously identified QTL regions known to affect fat deposition. Fifteen animals with lower and 15 animals with higher residues for backfat, according to a linear model using the SAS GLM procedure, were selected from a population of 1171 animals and genotyped using the BovineSNP50 BeadChip. Initial analysis revealed more than 100 SNPs that discriminated the tails of phenotypic distribution. One extended region of association included the centromeric region of chromosome (Chr) 14. Because this region overlapped with QTL from previous reports, we developed SNP assays to interrogate two linkage disequilibrium blocks, one in the centromeric region and another in the middle region of Chr 14 to confirm the association. T cells recognize tumor-associated antigens under the condition of lymphopenia-induced homeostatic proliferation (HP); however, HP-driven antitumor responses gradually decay in association with tumor growth. Type I interferon (IFN) has important roles in regulating the innate and adaptive immune system. In this study we examined whether a tumor-specific immune response induced by IFN-α could enhance and sustain HP-induced antitumor immunity. An intratumoral IFN-α gene transfer resulted in marked tumor suppression when administered in the early period of syngeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (synHSCT), and was evident even in distant tumors that were not transduced with the IFN-α vector. The intratumoral delivery of the IFN-α gene promoted the maturation of CD11c+ cells in the tumors and effectively augmented the antigen-presentation capacity of the cells. An analysis of the cytokine profile showed that the CD11c+ cells in the treated tumors secreted a large amount of immune-stimulatory cytokines including interleukin (IL)-6. The CD11c+ cells rescued effector T-cell proliferation from regulatory T-cell-mediated suppression, and IL-6 may have a dominant role in this phenomenon. The intratumoral IFN-α gene transfer creates an environment strongly supporting the enhancement of antitumor immunity in reconstituted lymphopenic recipients through the induction of tumor-specific immunity and suppression of immunotolerance.
