Considering circularity aspects during the engineering of smart products implies a significantly increased complexity of engineering processes. Especially technical reconfiguration of smart products, offered as services in availability-oriented business models, enables the integration of circular economy aspects in sustainable products and lifecycles, through realizing several aspects of the 9R strategies. This paper introduces an analysis of interdependencies between 9R strategies potential reconfiguration options, technical characteristics of smart products, different maturity levels of smart product and abilities for circularity. Partial engineering models managed in different product lifecycle management systems provide a technical basis for systematization and evaluation of circular abilities of reconfigurable smart products in different lifecycle phases. The approach aims to improve circularity-related decision making in systems engineering processes in the early development phases and during the reconfiguration of smart products during utilization phase. By progressively embracing the general principles of integrated, parametric, interdisciplinary design that considers the manufacturing elements of the imagined product, the modern aesthetic designer is called upon to broaden their knowledge and abilities. Especially when there is a need to produce complex shapes, when cost-effective, there are also numerous 3D printing technologies available today, to be used both in the conceptual phase (prototyping) and for actual production. The present paper aims to propose a discussion on the role of product engineering modelling in aesthetic design education. The progress of new 3D parametric modelling tools available to aesthetic designers is discussed, with a focus on the most cutting-edge features that have been released recently. Creativity has been identified as a critical activity in distributed product development. Various methods and tools support distributed product development and distributed teams in general, but none with a focus on creative problem solving. To tackle this challenge, a systematic literature review has been conducted to gather the influencing factors on distributed creativity to be used as a starting point for supporting creativity in distributed product development teams. Within this submission, an impact model is developed, focusing on the success factors of creativity. Furthermore, the interconnection between the factors is modelled. Product engineering involves designing and dimensioning a product, including geometric modeling and scientific simulation and analysis to fulfill predetermined requirements. Therefore, the engineering design effort requires a multidisciplinary analysis that is based on a multitude of different models, each of which require a different kind of representation of the same product geometry. The proposed approach uses a design language and a design compiler to translate an abstract source geometry in an abstract representation scheme into an arbitrary target format. The process of developing new products always contains an element of uncertainty. This uncertainty translates into a significant risk for companies investing in the development of new products or services. The risk in new product development (NPD) can be based on 'disciplined experimentation': a structured process designed to rapidly identify the 'vivid' needs of the customer, test whether the main features of the new product or service will satisfy these needs (fast prototyping). 'Disciplined experimentation', in particular, addresses assumptions about value (how the initiative will produce outcomes that outweigh the effort involved), growth (how the initiative can be scaled up beyond the first group of customers) and sustainability (how quickly the organisation can adapt to the new initiative and how easily competitors will be able to replicate it). The integration and quickness between the phases of product development process are key elements for companies' competitiveness and the prototyping technologies provide relevant means for the development of new products. The prototyping of products by additive manufacturing can vary in quality, costs, materials and characteristics, however, incorporating environmental and sustainable attributes are important strategies to support the design for manufacturing. This paper proposes method for multi-attribute evaluation of prototyping technology associated with sustainable product conception. This proposal focuses on improving the decision-making process and provide the prioritization of technical characteristics and it was evaluated and validated, through case studies, applying selective laser sintering and fused deposition modelling technologies into two prototype developments: a bristles protector (lightweight composite product) and a toothbrush (single massive product). The research innovates by proposing a matrix that allows the inclusion of environmental and sustainable features in the design decision-making process, promoting the integration of multiple perspectives that involves customer, product and technology associated with sustainable concepts meeting the current demand of the society and companies for the development of sustainable products. Many traditional industrial products are being gradually replaced by environmental friendly alternatives. N,N-Dimethyldecanamide and D-limonene are solvents that fulfil the requirements to be considered green solvents and may find application in agrochemicals. This contribution deals with the study of emulsions formulated with a mixture of these solvents and an eco-friendly emulsifier. The procedure followed for the development of these formulations was based on the application of product design principles. This led to the optimum homogenization rate and subsequently to the optimum ratio of solvents. The combination of different techniques (rheology, laser diffraction, confocal laser-scanning microscopy, and multiple light scattering) was demonstrated to be a powerful tool to assist in the prediction of the emulsions destabilization process. The evaluation of the performance of new products to be released on the market is essential to measure its acceptability by consumers. In this work, the performance of an added-value product, microencapsulated perfumes applied on textiles for man suits, was predicted and evaluated. The odor intensity and character of the perfume ingredients was measured by headspace gas chromatography after dry cleaning and abrasion tests on textiles impregnated with microcapsules. The evaporation and diffusion of the fragrances in the encapsulated perfume was assessed. In recent years, manufacturing companies and service providers have moved towards offering customer-specific problem solutions. These integrated bundles usually consist of hardware, software, and service components and are called product service systems (PSS) or hybrid products. Since the success of the resulting solution depends on the understanding of all requirements, requirements engineering (RE) has become a key factor. The article analyzes the state of the art of RE for PSS based on an extensive literature review in the domains of product-, software-, and service engineering. For this, criteria are derived from the characteristics of PSS and from the task area of RE in the life cycle of PSS. Based on these criteria we analyze the most established RE approaches for their suitability for PSS. An important finding is that integrated/interdisciplinary approaches for RE are missing. Moreover, the maturity of RE approaches in the three domains varies significantly. All analyzed approaches heavily rely on concepts and solution characteristics of their own domain so that a transfer to other domains is hardly possible. This literature review lays the foundation for successful RE for PSS and especially for future research aiming at combining and integrating RE approaches and models of product-, software-, and service engineering. The article compares the effect of two psychophysical odor intensity models on the odor prediction of perfumes. The Power-Law and odor value (OV) models are both used on the perfumery ternary quaternary diagrams to map the smell of fragrances. The evolution of headspace concentration and liquid is simulated in a diffusion model. The odor intensity models differ in their initial perfume impact. The Power-Law model predicted a higher ethanol concentration compared to the OV.

This article proposes a methodology to describe the odor perception of quaternary perfume mixtures in the headspace. Odor value (OV) is a quantitative parameter that describes odor strength or intensity. The Strongest Component model was employed to account for the odor perception of multi-component mixtures. Particular focus is given to the components of the predicted quinary system. Results of the showed that the concentration of tonalide in the mixture leads to an increase in the odor volume for vanillin.

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that a low-budget information system using knowledge bases can be developed and adopted in a manufacturing firm to improve the productivity of the organization. The automotive industry uses complex software systems to perform product engineering at all stages of the production process, from conceptual design to manufacture. For each of these stages, different software tools of great complexity are employed, and the people using these tools need constant support in order to continue being productive even when problems arise with the software they are using. Given the amount and variety of queries made by product engineering personnel to the software support staff, said staff can benefit from a software tool that stores their expertise for reuse and can be queried in order to generate quick solutions to problems with product engineering software. In this article, we describe an information system that uses these ideas related to case-based reasoning in order to flexibly and efficiently reply when problem situations are encountered by the product engineering staff of a major automobile manufacturer. This setup can relieve some of the burden placed on the software support staff and reduce their response time. Product design engineering is undergoing a transformation from informal and largely experience-based discipline to a science-based domain. Computational intelligence (CI) offers models and algorithms that can contribute greatly to design formalization and automation. This paper surveys CI concepts and approaches applicable to product design engineering. Taxonomy of the surveyed literature is presented according to the generally recognized areas in both product design engineering and CI. Some research issues that arise from the broad perspective presented in the paper have been signaled but not fully pursued. No survey of such a broad field can be complete; however, the material presented in the paper is a summary of state-of-the-art CI concepts and approaches in product design engineering. Product engineering problems are considered that artse in the use of batch crystallization processes. Specifically forward and reverse process functions are identified that in the forward direction enable the calculation of product crystal size distributions (CSDs) from specified operating conditions, and in particular a specified temperature-time (T-t) profile. In the reverse direction the process function calculates the required processing conditions--the T-t profile--needed to make a specified product CSD. A series of example calculations is reported, based on the kinetics of the pentaerythritol--water system, that show that in the presence of nucleation and growth only, the relationship between desired, or target, CSD and required T-t profile is, in practice, unique. It is observed that some such profiles are either impractical or impossible, from which it is possible to conclude that the corresponding target CSD is itself impossible. A further example is considered in which the property function relating the product property (CSD) to the end-use properties (cake porosity and filtration time) enables the specification of a target CSD and of the process conditions necessary for its production. Microfabricated fuel cell systems are a promising alternative to batteries for man-portable power generation. These devices are potential consumer products that constitute a more or less complex chemical process, and can therefore be considered chemical products. A great variety of potential devices are being considered in various research institutions and thus there is a need for a systematic product design methodology, including comparison of alternatives and examination of the influence of technological parameters. The design of these product/process hybrids is inherently different from macroscale process design because of the differing design specifications, objectives, and constraints, as well as the relative importance of the underlying physico-chemical phenomena. Heat losses substantially influence the process performance, so the processes are highly spatially integrated. Consequently, flowsheet design and layout need to be considered simultaneously. In this paper we present our methodology and perform a number of case studies, including studies of scaling of the processes and effects of layout options and relevant technological parameters. The manufacturing industry is increasingly being dominated by information and communication technology, leading to the development of cyber-physical systems. Most existing frameworks on the assessment of such technological advancements see the technology as a solitary system. However, research has shown that other environmental factors like organizational processes or human factors are also affected. Drawing on the sociotechnical systems approach, future technologies could be evaluated using scenarios of digitized work. These scenarios can help classify new technologies and uncover their advantages and constraints in order to provide guidance for the digital development of organizations. We developed an instrument for evaluating scenarios of digitized work on the relevant dimensions 'technology', 'human' and 'organization' and conducted a quantitative study applying this instrument on three different scenarios (N = 24 subject matter experts). Results show that our instrument is capable of measuring technological, human and organizational aspects of technology implementations and detecting differences in the scenarios under investigation.
