Ponds and "pondscapes" (networks of ponds) are crucial habitats for biodiversity and for delivering multiple benefits to humans, so-called "Nature's Contribution to People", such as climate mitigation and adaptation to climate change, creation, and maintenance of habitat for biodiversity, water purification, flood mitigation and cultural benefits (e.g., recreational possibilities). However, ponds are not often considered as Nature-based Solutions to provide all these benefits. In addition, there is insufficient knowledge on how to manage and restore ponds to maximise their role to increase the resilience of ecosystems and society to climate change. To facilitate improved implementation of ponds as Nature-based Solutions for the delivery of a wide range of Nature Contributions to People, it is important to generate and integrate biodiversity, ecosystems, societal, economic and policy knowledge. Hence, there is a need for evidence-based guidance to support the broader use of ponds. Here, we review the role of ponds and pondscapes in delivering Nature's Contributions to People and provide an overview of the challenges and opportunities for their broader implementation as Nature-based Solutions. Finally, we propose a conceptual framework that can help the implementation of pond Nature-based Solutions, and that outlines future research needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study analyzed 502 responses from members of the education workforce on the Resilience at Work (RAW) scale and other measures of health and job satisfaction as part of an initiative offering training and technical assistance to support student and staff well-being. A latent profile analysis using scores on components of the RAW identified three resilience profiles: lower, moderate, and higher capacities for resilience. Profiles were differentiated across components related to resilience capacity including alignment of work and personal values, level of social support, and ability to manage stress. Differences between profiles were observed across days of poor physical health, days of poor mental health, days of activity restriction, general health rating, and domains of burnout, compassion satisfaction, and secondary traumatic stress. These findings reinforce calls to support the education workforce through changes that allow access to meaningful work, an evaluation of demands including workload, relevant training on emotional wellness, positive experiences, connections with others, and stress management. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a versatile petrochemical used in the preparation of high volume polymers including polycarbonates and epoxy resins. Unfortunately, BPA is also an endocrine disrupter and has been banned from use in various consumer products by several regulatory agencies. To address this issue, our group evaluated the estrogenic activity of nine bio-based tris/bisphenols derived from resveratrol (1 and 2), anethole (3, 4), eugenol (5), carvacrol (6), and creosol (7–9). Compounds 5–9 were determined to be non-estrogenic, while compound 3 exhibited a response at a lower concentration than BPA, and compounds 1, 2, and 4 exhibited responses similar to BPA. Polycarbonates of the bio-based bisphenols (PC3–PC9) were then synthesized via interfacial polymerization and characterized by SEC, MALDI-MS, DSC, TGA, and UV-VIS spectroscopy. The bio-based polycarbonates exhibited Mn values up to 14 600 Da (SEC) and had a wide range of glass transition temperatures (Tg) with values up to 156 °C (∼25 °C higher than BPA with a similar molecular weight) depending on the monomer structure. The bio-based polycarbonates had high thermal stabilities with Td5% values up to 383 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere. The non-estrogenic properties of 5–9 coupled with the good thermal properties of the derivative polycarbonates suggests that these materials are sustainable, lower toxicity alternatives for BPA-based polycarbonates. The optimization of adoptive transfer approaches of anti-tumor T cells requires both the functional improvement of the injected T cells and the modulation of the tumor microenvironment, favoring the recruitment of these T cells and their activation. We have recently shown the therapeutic benefit of two approaches tested individually in a melanoma model wich were on one hand the adoptive transfer of specific T cells deficient for the expression of the inhibitory receptor PD-1, and on the other hand PD-L1 targeted alpha therapy (TAT). In this study, we sought to investigate the efficacy of these two therapies combined, compared to each monotherapy, in order to evaluate the synergy between these two approaches, in the same melanoma model. Here we used melanoma-specific T-cell clones, previously validated for the edition of PDCD1 gene and with previously demonstrated superior anti-tumor activity than their wild-type counterparts, after adoptive transfer in NSG mice engrafted with PD-L1 expressing human melanoma tumors. We also used a previously validated TAT approach, using a 213Bi-anti-human-PD-L1 mAb, alone or in combination with adoptive cell transfer, in the same mouse model. We confirmed previous results obtained with each monotherapy and documented the safety and the superior ability of a combination between the adoptive transfer of PD-1 deficient T cells and TAT targeting PD-L1 to control the growth of melanoma tumors in NSG mice. PSICHE is a high-energy, multi-technique beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron facility. It performs X-ray tomography for materials science and other applications and X-ray diffraction for samples at extreme conditions. The beamline has been in service for user experiments since 2013, but is in continual development to add new capabilities. In this article, we present a series of new developments which combine diffraction and tomography and which are of relevance to the study of materials and manufacturing. By combining these techniques, we can add quantitative structural information from diffraction to morphological information obtained by tomography. Recent developments in very fast tomography allow dynamic processes to be studied in situ and in 3D with a time (frequency) resolution of 2 Hz. We have developed in situ sample environments to enable fast tomography measurements at high temperature and pressure, which will allow future studies of industrial processes such as hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Introduction: Primary failure of eruption (PFE) is a sporadic or inherited disorder of dental eruption that can be caused by mutations in the PTH1R gene. PFE typically manifests as a severe posterior open bite. Orthodontic treatment is considered ineffective in PFE. Case presentation: Here, we report two unrelated PTH1R‐negative cases of severe eruption disorders presenting several of the typical clinical features of PFE, and where we tracted the impacted teeth using Bollard bone anchors. Management: We managed to obtain a satisfactory occlusion in both cases without extended ankylosis induced by the orthodontic movements based on bone anchors. Outcome: These cases underline the need for a better understanding of the genetics of dental eruption disorders related to PFE before establishing strict clinical guidelines ruling out potentially efficient orthodontic management protocols within the PFE spectrum. Many colleges and universities encourage students to engage with social justice issues in their education and career discernment. However, a variety of individual attributes and life experiences may predict how college students develop an awareness of and attitudes toward social justice, perhaps including ways in which students relate to their own challenging life experiences and encounter others' experiences of injustice. This study explored the relationship between individual attributes, educational experiences and social justice attitudes among a sample of 347 college students who completed self-report surveys. Specifically, this study examined a) help-seeking attitudes, b) self-compassion, c) prior experience receiving mental health support, and d) prior experience participating in service activities as predictors of social justice attitudes. As hypothesized, higher willingness to seek help in times of personal distress and higher levels of selfcompassion were positively correlated with awareness and concern for social justice issues, with help-seeking attitudes being the stronger predictor. Significant differences were also observed across gender, help-seeking history, and service experience. Furthermore, the association between help-seeking attitudes and social justice attitudes was moderated by gender and by prior service experience and mental health support. Background: Breathlessness is the prominent symptom of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Despite optimal therapeutic management including pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, many COPD patients exhibit significant breathlessness. Chronic breathlessness is defined as breathlessness that persists despite optimal treatment of the underlying disease. Because of the major disability related to chronic breathlessness, symptomatic treatments including opioids have been recommended by several authors. The prevalence of chronic breathlessness in COPD and its management in routine clinical practice have been poorly investigated. Our aim was to examine prevalence, associated characteristics and management of chronic breathlessness in patients with COPD recruited in a real-life tertiary hospital-based cohort.Methods: A prospective study was conducted among 120 consecutive COPD patients recruited, in stable condition, at Nancy University Hospital, France. In parallel, 88 pulmonologists of the same geographical region were asked to respond to an on-line questionnaire on breathlessness management.Results: Sixty four (53%) patients had severe breathlessness (modified Medical Research Council scale≥3), despite optimal inhaled medications for 94% of them; 40% had undergone pulmonary rehabilitation within the past 2 years. The severity of breathlessness increased with increasing airflow limitation. Breathlessness was associated with increased symptoms of anxiety, depression and with osteoporosis. No relation was found with other symptoms, exacerbation rate, or cardiovascular comorbidities. Among the patients with chronic breathlessness and Hospitalized Anxiety and/or Depression score > 10, only 25% were treated with antidepressant or anxiolytic. Among the pulmonologists 46 (52%) answered to the questionnaire and expressed a high willingness to prescribe opioids forchronic breathlessness, which contrasted with the finding that none of these patients received such treatments against breathlessness.Conclusion: Treatment approaches to breathlessness and associated psychological distress are insufficient in COPD. A study was carried out, from 2012 to 2015, in 10 French départements to estimate the serological prevalence of Q fever and the frequency of abortive episodes potentially related to Coxiella burnetii in a large sample of cattle, sheep and goat herds. The serological survey covered 731 cattle, 522 sheep and 349 goat herds, randomly sampled. The frequency of abortive episodes potentially related to C. burnetii was estimated by investigating series of abortions in 2695 cattle, 658 sheep and 105 goat herds using quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses and complementary serological results when needed. The average between-herd seroprevalence was significantly lower for cattle (36·0%) than for sheep (55·7%) and goats (61·0%) and significantly higher for dairy herds (64·9% for cattle and 75·6% for sheep) than for meat herds (18·9% for cattle and 39·8% for sheep). Within-herd seroprevalence was also significantly higher for goats (41·5%) than for cattle (22·2%) and sheep (25·7%). During the study period, we estimated that 2·7% (n = 90), 6·2% (n = 48) and 16·7% (n = 19) of the abortive episodes investigated could be ‘potentially related to C. burnetii’in cattle, sheep and goat herds, respectively. Overall, strong variability was observed between départements and species, suggesting that risk factors such as herd density and farming practices play a role in disease transmission and maintenance. Introduction The osmotic fragility ( OF) test was a central test for the diagnosis of hereditary red blood cell ( RBC) disorders (mostly hereditary spherocytosis ( HS), but thalassaemia as well). Nowadays although the traditional multitubes method has lost a prominent place, many laboratories still perform such a laboured test, despite the lack of standardization. In fact, the evaluation of OF may offer an inexpensive screening for RBC disorders. We present a new semi-automatic device, allowing the continuous recording of OF, by an updated dialysis method. Methods Repeatability, stability over time, influence of the anticoagulant were evaluated among a population of healthy blood donors. The test was then performed among patients presenting inherited RBC disorders ( HS or haemoglobinopathies) where OF is typically altered. Results Repeatability was excellent; the parameters were greatly influenced by the nature of the anticoagulant and interestingly appeared stable for 48 h. Patients with RBC disorders displayed the expected profile in regard with their disease: patients with HS all presented an increased OF while patients with haemoglobinopathy displayed resistant profiles. Context. Despite the importance of having an accurate measurement of the solar disc radius, there are large uncertainties of its value due to the use of different measurement techniques and instrument calibration. An item of particular importance is to establish whether the value of the solar disc radius correlates with the solar activity level. Aims. The main goal of this work is to measure the solar disc radius in the near-UV, visible, and near-IR regions of the solar spectrum. Methods. Three instruments on board the PICARD spacecraft, namely the Bolometric Oscillations Sensor (BOS), the PREcision MOnitoring Sensor (PREMOS), and a solar sensor (SES), are used to derive the solar disc radius using the light curves produced when the Sun is occulted by the Moon. Nine eclipses, from 2010 to 2013, resulted in 17 occultations as viewed from the moving satellite. The calculation of the solar disc radius uses a simulation of the light curve taking into account the center-to-limb variation provided by the Non-local thermodynamic Equilibrium Spectral SYnthesis (NESSY) code. Results. We derive individual values for the solar disc radius for each viewed eclipse. Tests for a systematic variation of the radius with the progression of the solar cycle yield no significant results during the three years of measurements within the uncertainty of our measurements. Therefore, we derive a more precise radius value by averaging these values. At one astronomical unit, we obtain 959.79 arcseconds (arcsec) from the bolometric experiment; from PREMOS measurements, we obtain 959.78 arcsec at 782 nm and 959.76 arcsec at 535 nm. We found 960.07 arcsec at 210 nm, which is a higher value than the other determinations given the photons at this wavelength originate from the upper photosphere and lower chromosphere. We also give a detailed comparison of our results with those previously published using measurements from space-based and ground-based instruments using the Moon angular radius reference, and different methods. Conclusions. Our results, which use the Moon as an absolute calibration, clearly show the dependence of the solar disc radius with wavelength in UV, visible and near-IR. Beyond the metrological results, solar disc radius measurements will allow the accuracy of models of the solar atmosphere to be tested. Proposed systematic variations of the solar disc radius during the time of observation would be smaller than the uncertainty of our measurement, which amounts to less than 26 milliarcseconds. ABSTRACT We investigate a novel way to introduce resistivity models deriving from airborne electromagnetic surveys into regional geological modelling. Standard geometrical geological modelling can be strengthened using geophysical data. Here, we propose to extract information contained in a resistivity model in the form of local slopes that constrain the modelling of geological interfaces. The proposed method is illustrated on an airborne electromagnetic survey conducted in the region of Courtenay in France. First, a resistivity contrast corresponding to the clay/chalk interface was interpreted confronting the electromagnetic soundings to boreholes. Slopes were then sampled on this geophysical model and jointly interpolated with the clay/chalk interface documented in boreholes using an implicit 3D potential-field method. In order to evaluate this new joint geophysical-geological model, its accuracy was compared with that of both pure geological and pure geophysical models for various borehole configurations. The proposed joint modelling yields the most accurate clay/chalk interface whatever the number and location of boreholes taken into account for modelling and validation. Compared with standard geological modelling, the approach introduces in between boreholes geometrical information derived from geophysical results. Compared with conventional resistivity interpretation of the geophysical model, it reduces drift effects and honours the boreholes. The method therefore improves what is commonly obtained with geological or geophysical data separately, making it very attractive for robust 3D geological modelling of the subsurface. Beside cytotoxic drugs, other drugs can impact men's fertility through various mechanisms. Via the modification of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis hormones or by non-hormonal mechanisms, drugs may directly and indirectly induce sexual dysfunction and spermatogenesis impairment and alteration of epididymal maturation. This systematic literature review summarizes existing data about the negative impact and associations of pharmacological treatments on male fertility (excluding cytotoxic drugs), with a view to making these data more readily available for medical staff. In most cases, these effects on spermatogenesis/sperm maturation/sexual function are reversible after the discontinuation of the drug. When a reprotoxic treatment cannot be stopped and/or when the impact on semen parameters/sperm DNA is potentially irreversible (Sulfasalazine Azathioprine, Mycophenolate mofetil and Methotrexate), the cryopreservation of spermatozoa before treatment must be proposed. Deleterious impacts on fertility of drugs with very good or good level of evidence (Testosterone, Sulfasalazine, Anabolic steroids, Cyproterone acetate, Opioids, Tramadol, GhRH analogues and Sartan) are developed. Carvacrol is a renewable phenol that can be derived from abundant components of pine resin. To demonstrate the utility of carvacrol for polymer applications, a bisphenol was synthesized from carvacrol and converted to both a cyanate ester resin (CarvCy) and polycarbonate. A cured resin disk prepared from CarvCy exhibited a Tg of 224 °C and a water uptake of only 0.7% after being immersed in 85 °C water for four days. The wet Tg of the material was only 3 °C lower than the dry Tg showing that the cured resin was virtually unaffected by exposure to hot water. Despite the presence of aliphatic groups on the aromatic rings, the cured resin exhibited good thermal stability with only 5% weight loss at 390 °C. The polycarbonate prepared from carvacrol had Mn = 10 200, Mw/Mn = 1.60, Tg = 119 °C, and even better thermal stability than the cyanate ester with 5% weight loss observed at 421 °C. The results provide compelling evidence that the sustainable phenol carvacrol can be used as a platform molecule for the generation of high performance polymers with exceptional properties. Conventional genotoxicity tests are technically difficult to apply to oocytes, and results obtained on somatic cells cannot be extrapolated to gametes. We have previously described a comet assay (original-CA) on denuded mouse oocytes, but, in vivo, oocytes are not isolated from their surrounding follicular cells. Our objective was to develop a comet assay on cumulus-oocyte complexes (COC-CA) for a more physiological approach to study the genotoxicity of environmental factors on oocytes. For COC-CA, whole COC were exposed directly to exogenous agents after ovulation and removal from oviducts. Three conditions were studied: a negative control group, and two positive control groups, one of which was exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and the other group was incubated with cerium dioxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs). With both tests, DNA damage was significant in the presence of both H2O2 and CeO2 NPs compared with the negative control. COC-CA offers an interesting tool for assaying the genotoxicity of environmental agents towards germinal cells. Furthermore, COC-CA is less timeconsuming and simplifies the protocol of the original-CA, because COC-CA is easier to perform without the washing-out procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the beginning of the green revolution in the 1970s, large areas of India have been strongly dependent on groundwater for irrigation which has led to aquifer overexploitation in various parts of the country. To tackle this problem, Indian authorities rely on managed aquifer recharge (MAR). Perennial water resources in semi-arid regions of South India consist mostly of crystalline aquifers. Despite limited and only local storage capacity and high potential evaporation loss, MAR is promoted through percolation tanks. To assess the efficiency of MAR, a monitoring program and a water balance were developed for a percolation tank in Andhra Pradesh, India. The developed water balance shows that the tank has a limited local impact and only a few events contribute to tank replenishment. Enhanced infiltration (10,100 m) is of the same order of magnitude as evaporation (8,000 m). Potential benefits of the tank system depend on the observation scale and rainfall conditions. Generally, tanks have a local positive impact in their immediate surroundings. However, in the case of low rainfall, if there is no stream water flowing out of the watershed, the tank merely redistributes the water within the watershed. Inversely, during years with high precipitation, there may be a net benefit in terms of underground storage. Regarding the hydrological impact assessment of percolation tanks, it is necessary to take into account (1) the net 'nonmanaged' water balance at watershed scale compared to 'managed' water balance, (2) the inter-annual rainfall variations and (3) the impact for downstream users. A solar spectrum extending from the extreme ultraviolet to the near-infrared is an important input for solar physics, climate research, and atmospheric physics. Ultraviolet measurements have been conducted since the beginning of the space age, but measurements throughout the contiguous visible and infrared (IR) regions are much more sparse. Ageing is a key problem throughout the entire spectral domain, but most of the effort extended to understand degradation was concentrated on the ultraviolet spectral region, and these mechanisms may not be appropriate in the IR. This problem is further complicated by the scarcity of long-term data sets. Onboard the International Space Station, the SOLSPEC spectrometer measured an IR solar spectral irradiance lower than the one given by ATLAS 3, e.g. by about 7 % at 1 700 nm. We here evaluate the consequences of the lower solar spectral irradiance measurements and present a re-analysis of the on-orbit calibration lamp and solar data trend, which lead to a revised spectrum. BackgroundElectroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for depression but the extent and persistence of cognitive side-effects remain uncertain. It has been reported that there is little evidence that impairments last longer than up to 15 days post-ECT. However, relatively few studies have followed patients for even as long as 1 month post-ECT. Here we report results from a brief cognitive battery given prior to ECT and repeated five times up to 6 months post-ECT.MethodIn a retrospective case-note study of routinely collected clinical data 126 patients treated with ECT completed two neuropsychological tests [Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) spatial recognition memory (SRM) and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE)] and two subjective reports of memory function, prior to ECT. Patients were reassessed following ECT and at 1, 3 and 6 months post-ECT although not all patients completed all assessments.ResultsPerformance relative to pre-ECT baseline was significantly poorer at each post-ECT assessment up to 3 months post-ECT using the CANTAB SRM, but was improved at 6 months. Conversely, MMSE score showed improvements relative to baseline from 1 month post-ECT. Mood and subjective memory scores improved following ECT and were correlated with one another, but not with either neuropsychological measure.ConclusionsThe CANTAB SRM task revealed reversible cognitive deficiencies relative to a pre-ECT baseline for at least 3 months following ECT, while MMSE score and patients' subjective reports showed only improvement. Faecal indicator bacteria (thermotolerant coliform and faecal streptococci) were enumerated in a Mediterranean coastal river to evaluate bacterial contamination levels in relation to hydrological conditions, to estimate delivery of bacterial loads to transitional and coastal waters (Thau lagoon) and to identify bacterial sources of pollution and their contribution to the bacterial flow. Results showed that (1) in low flow conditions, mean bacterial concentrations were higher than EU guidelines for bathing waters; (2) floods had higher concentrations of indicator bacteria than low flows; (3) low flow conditions represented a negligible proportion of bacterial loads compared with high flow and flood periods; (4) during medium and low flow conditions, bacteria were stored in riverbed fine sediments forming in-stream stores that may be flushed during floods; (5) the first flush effect was highlighted during an early autumn flood as was the role of in-stream stores during the course of the flood; and (6) point sources that continuously feed the river are contributing to the pool of bacteria accumulated in the riverbed sediment. STUDY QUESTION Does in vivo exposure to benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) induce DNA damage in oocytes and cumulus cells (CCs) in mice? SUMMARY ANSWER Significant increases in DNA strand breaks in oocytes and CCs and in BaP-induced DNA adducts in CCs were detected in exposed mice compared with controls. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY BaP has well-known mutagenic and carcinogenic effects on somatic cells, and is also registered as potential reproductive toxicant by several environmental protection agencies. It has been shown to cause a significant increase in DNA adducts in ovarian tissues; however, to our knowledge, the genotoxic effects of BaP on oocytes and CCs have not been studied to date. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION Female CD1 mice were exposed to BaP via the oral administration of a single dose of 13 mg/kg body weight (bw); matched controls were exposed to the vehicle only (soya oil). A total of 15 groups of 6 mice (exposed or controls) were sacrificed 2, 4, 6, 15 or 22 days after BaP exposure, and after collection of oviducts, the oocyte–CC complexes (COC) were released. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS The alkaline comet assay was used to quantify the DNA breaks in oocytes and CCs; DNA damage was expressed as the Olive Tail Moment (OTM). Immunofluorescent staining was used to quantify BaP-induced DNA adducts in CCs. Fluorescence was expressed as the average grey value (AGVA; arbitrary units). The differences between the exposed and control groups were assessed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the non-parametric Mann–Whitney test. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Higher levels of DNA damage were observed in the oocytes and CCs of BaP-exposed mice than in those of vehicle controls. Significant increases in OTM (mean ± SE) were detected in (i) oocytes from females exposed for 4 (10.5 ± 0.9 versus 3.1 ± 0.4, P < 0.0001) or 6 days before collection (15.6 ± 2.0 versus 3.6 ± 0.9, P < 0.0001) and (ii) CCs from females exposed 2 (6.4 ± 0.6 versus 2.1 ± 0.2, P < 0.0001), 4 (7.8 ± 0.4 versus 2.4 ± 0.1, P < 0.0001) or 6 days before collection (7.3 ± 0.3 versus 3.2 ± 0.5, P < 0.0001) compared with controls. A significant increase in benzo(a)pyrene-7,8-9,10 diol epoxide (BPDE)-DNA adducts and higher AGVA (mean ± SE) scores were observed in CCs from females exposed 2 (6.1 ± 0.3 versus 3.6 ± 0.5, P < 0.0001), 4 (7.5 ± 0.1 versus 3.4 ± 0.1, P < 0.0001) or 6 days before collection (11.6 ± 0.4 versus 3.7 ± 0.1, P < 0.0001) compared with control mice. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION Mice were given one treatment via the oral route because this dose and mode of administration have been shown to induce detectable BPDE-DNA adduct levels in mouse organs and sperm cells. Additional data are needed to assess DNA damage in oocytes and CCs after chronic exposure to BaP in vivo. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS To our knowledge, this is the first study examining the in vivo genotoxicity of BaP in oocytes and CCs. We observed significant DNA damage in the oocytes and CCs of mice after acute BaP exposure. BPDE-DNA adducts result directly from BaP metabolism while DNA breaks could result mainly from BPDE-DNA adduct excision and repair and/or through direct genotoxicity from increased reactive oxygen species. These results add new and important insights regarding the recently suggested toxicity of chronic BaP exposure in the ovary. ABSTRACT Assessment of deep buried basin/basement relationships using geophysical data is a challenge for the energy and mining industries as well as for geothermal or CO2 storage purposes. In deep environments, few methods can provide geological information; magnetic and gravity data remain among the most informative and cost-effective methods. Here, in order to derive fast first-order information on the basement/basin interface, we propose a combination of existing and original approaches devoted to potential field data analysis. Namely, we investigate the geometry (i.e., depth and structure) and the nature of a deep buried basement through a case study SW of the Paris Basin. Joint processing of new high-resolution magnetic data and up-to-date gravity data provides an updated overview of the deep basin. First, the main structures of the magnetic basement are highlighted using Euler deconvolution and are interpreted in a structural sketch map. The new high-resolution aeromagnetic map actually offers a continuous view of regional basement structures and reveals poorly known and complex deformation at the junction between major domains of the Variscan collision belt. Second, Werner deconvolution and an ad hoc post-processing analysis allow the extraction of a set of magnetic sources at (or close to) the basin/basement interface. Interpolation of these sources together with the magnetic structural sketch provides a Werner magnetic basement map displaying realistic 3D patterns and basement depths consistent with data available in deep petroleum boreholes. The last step of processing was designed as a way to quickly combine gravity and magnetic information and to simply visualize first-order petrophysical patterns of the basement lithology. This is achieved through unsupervised classification of suitably selected gravity and magnetic maps and, as compared to previous work, provides a realistic and updated overview of the cartographic distribution of density/magnetization of basement rocks. Altogether, the three steps of processing proposed in this paper quickly provide relevant information on a deep buried basement in terms of structure, geometry and nature (through petrophysics). Notwithstanding, limitations of the proposed procedure are raised: in the case of the Paris Basin for instance, this study does not provide proper information on Pre-Mesozoic basins, some of which have been sampled in deep boreholes. The coseismic surface displacement field and slip distribution at depth due to the Kashmir earthquake (Mw = 7.6, 2005) have been analysed by different authors using subpixel correlation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images and optical images, teleseismic analysis, GPS measurements, as well as in situ field measurements. In this paper, first, we use 23 sets of measurement from subpixel correlation of SAR images and differential interferometry to retrieve the 3-D coseismic surface displacement field. The obtained horizontal and vertical components along the fault trace are then compared, respectively, to equivalent measurements obtained from subpixel correlation of two optical ASTER images and in situ field measurements. Second, the coseismic fault geometry parameters and slip distribution at depth are estimated. In addition to the one segment slip model as reported in previous work, a two segments slip model that better fits the surface fault break is proposed. The improvement of the two segments slip model in interpreting the measured displacement field is highlighted through comparison of residuals of both slip models. Taking advantage of differential interferometry measurements that provide precise and continuous information in the far field of the fault, firstly, a wedge thrust according to Bendick et al. to the Northwest of the main rupture built on our two segments model is tested. According to the obtained results, the residual of the two segments main rupture plus wedge thrust model is slightly smaller than the residual of the two segments model to the Northwest of the Balakot–Bagh fault. Secondly, we test the sensitivity of our slip model to the presence of slip along a décollement as evidenced by Jouanne et al. through post-seismic analysis. The results indicate that the estimations of the coseismic displacement field and slip distribution in this paper are not significantly biased by such post-seismic displacement and that most coseismic displacement is located on a ∼40° NE-dipping fault, as previously reported. Temporary streams are those water courses that undergo the recurrent cessation of flow or the complete drying of their channel. The structure and composition of biological communities in temporary stream reaches are strongly dependent on the temporal changes of the aquatic habitats determined by the hydrological conditions. Therefore, the structural and functional characteristics of aquatic fauna to assess the ecological quality of a temporary stream reach cannot be used without taking into account the controls imposed by the hydrological regime. This paper develops methods for analysing temporary streams' aquatic regimes, based on the definition of six aquatic states that summarize the transient sets of mesohabitats occurring on a given reach at a particular moment, depending on the hydrological conditions: Hyperrheic, Eurheic, Oligorheic, Arheic, Hyporheic and Edaphic. When the hydrological conditions lead to a change in the aquatic state, the structure and composition of the aquatic community changes according to the new set of available habitats. We used the water discharge records from gauging stations or simulations with rainfall-runoff models to infer the temporal patterns of occurrence of these states in the Aquatic States Frequency Graph we developed. The visual analysis of this graph is complemented by the development of two metrics which describe the permanence of flow and the seasonal predictability of zero flow periods. Finally, a classification of temporary streams in four aquatic regimes in terms of their influence over the development of aquatic life is updated from the existing classifications, with stream aquatic regimes defined as Permanent, Temporary-pools, Temporary-dry and Episodic. While aquatic regimes describe the long-term overall variability of the hydrological conditions of the river section and have been used for many years by hydrologists and ecologists, aquatic states describe the availability of mesohabitats in given periods that determine the presence of different biotic assemblages. This novel concept links hydrological and ecological conditions in a unique way. All these methods were implemented with data from eight temporary streams around the Mediterranean within the MIRAGE project. Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is considered as a rare cause of stroke, partially because of difficulties to identify it when platelet count is not greatly elevated. However, early detection of ET is important because, without adapted treatment, recurrent thromboses are frequent. We collected, retrospectively, data from 14 cases of stroke patients with ET. Clinical characteristics, ischaemic stroke, laboratory data (platelet and leucocyte count, haemoglobin, JAK2 V617F mutation, culture of haematopoietic progenitors) and treatment were reviewed. Every patient has been interviewed by phone to evaluate outcome. The population consisted of nine women and five men with ages ranging from 40 to 87 years. Most of the patients (12) had atherosclerotic risk factors and two presented a thrombus in the internal carotid. ET was diagnosed early after the onset of stroke except in two patients. The platelet count was under 600*10/L for five patients. Mutation JAK2 V617F was found for eight patients. Thirteen patients were treated with an association between antiplatelet and cytoreductive treatment and did not present further thrombosis. Median follow-up is 2.8 years. These cases emphasize the problems of diagnosing ET at the onset of the stroke. Complete blood count has to be carefully read and ET can be suspected even if platelet count is not greatly increased. All biological tissues are three dimensional and contain structures that span a range of length scales from nanometres through to hundreds of millimetres. These are not ideally suited to current three-dimensional characterization techniques such as X-ray or transmission electron tomography. Such detailed morphological analysis is critical to understanding the structural features relevant to tissue function and designing therapeutic strategies intended to address structural deficiencies encountered in pathological states. We show that use of focused ion beam milling combined with scanning electron microscopy can provide three-dimensional information at nanometre resolution from biologically relevant volumes of material, in this case dentine. The article presents a study on the development of a tool in managing the groundwater resources in semi-arid hard rock regions at the rural watershed in South India. The operational decision support tool (DST-GW) was developed based on the changes of the cropping pattern, the rainfall conditions, and groundwater balance. The finding of the study intends to prevent the water table depletion.

Introduction: The Department of Health document Reforming emergency care stated that new initiatives need to be developed to improve the care and assessment of patients. The Audit Commission has suggested that ambulance services should be allowed to decide who should be sent to each type of emergency and treat some patients at home.Aims: This scheme explores a new way of providing clinical assessment of older patients in their homes or in care homes within Sheffield. It sets out to provide a very patient centred model of care by providing community based clinical assessment for patients presenting to the emergency services with minor acute conditions. Scope, development, and structure of scheme: The scheme trains paramedic practitioners in the assessment and treatment of minor conditions to emergency nurse practitioner level. It consists of a three week full time theory based course and a 45 day period of supervised clinical practice based in the emergency department, minor injury unit, care of the elderly falls clinic, and with community services. Subsequently, the competence of the practitioners is assessed. Service delivery: The service will be activated by a 999 call between 0800 to 2000 each day. It is anticipated that between 25% to 50% of patients eligible to receive the service will be assessed and treated within the home. This approach to providing emergency care is untested and the frequency of use, patient acceptability, safety, and cost effectiveness are unknown, therefore rigorous assessment is essential through a randomised controlled trial. BACKGROUND: A scheme to train paramedics to undertake a greater role in the care of older people following a call for an emergency ambulance was developed in a large city in the UK. OBJECTIVES: To assess the cost effectiveness of the paramedic practitioner (PP) scheme compared with usual emergency care. METHODS: A cluster randomised controlled trial was undertaken of PP compared with usual care. Weeks were allocated to the study group at random to the PP scheme either being active (intervention) or inactive (control). Resource use data were collected from routine sources, and from patient-completed questionnaires for events up to 28 days. EQ-5D data were also collected at 28 days. RESULTS: Whereas the intervention group received more PP contact time, it reduced the proportion of emergency department (ED) attendances (53.3% vs 84.0%) and time in the ED (126.6 vs 211.3 minutes). There was also some evidence of increased use of health services in the days following the incident for patients in the intervention group. Overall, total costs in the intervention group were 140 UK pounds lower when routine data were considered (p = 0.63). When the costs and QALY were considered simultaneously, PP had a greater than 95% chance of being cost effective at 20 000 UK pounds per QALY. CONCLUSION: Several changes in resource use are associated with the use of PP. Given these economic results in tandem with the clinical, operational and patient-related benefits, the wider implementation and evaluation of similar schemes should be considered.
