An editorial is presented on the anomaly-first research methodology, which focuses on marketplace disruptions, in marketing research. The article also presents a paradigm development framework for paradigm shift. In the article, six stages of this framework are detailed which beings with seeking out the disruption-driven anomalies, developing new paradigms around these anomalies, and ultimately making these new paradigms legitimate.

This study examines how the production of news making is evidenced in published content about the complex social phenomenon of murder-suicide. Building on Reese and Shoemaker's hierarchical model (2016), this study aims to understand the impact of the individual, routines, ideological, organisational and social institution levels on news content surrounding a case of murder-suicide in the Republic of Ireland. Data was gathered from in-depth interviews with journalists and news editors who detailed the nexus of competing interests that influence their work processes. Findings reveal how organisational structures, coupled with ideological orientations, industrial routines and the professional ideology of objectivity, acted as crucial gatekeepers, encouraging a dependency on elite sources. A crime narrative supported through the operationalisation of a media template perpetuated a hierarchy of victims. These representations served to mirror the institutionalised patriarchal power. 'Inessential Shakespeare' is largely an invented category, a consequence of a set of critical, editorial, and economic factors established when Shakespeare studies emerged as a recognisable academic discipline. Like all disciplines, Shakespeare studies required the construction of a material and conceptual apparatus consisting of the text of the plays, annotations, introductions, methods, and commentaries that would introduce students to the formal study of Shakespeare – as opposed to the more ephemeral experience of witnessing a performance. I argue that two popular and influential nineteenth-century American editors, Henry Norman Hudson and Richard Grant White, in the process of rendering Shakespeare essential to American education, also introduced a series of plays that continue to be held less essential than others. The process of medical scientific journal publishing merits further explanation for authors and readers. Prospective authors need to understand the scope of the journal and the article types that are published. We give an overview of the editorial process, including selection of reviewers, peer review and decisions regarding revision, acceptance and rejection of papers for Australasian Psychiatry. Important in the dissemination of knowledge are the networks of editors and their editorial board members. These are crucial gatekeepers in maintaining contacts with their professional fields as well as identifying others to evaluate manuscripts submitted for possible publication. We examine the countries of editorial board members of twenty-nine major Anglophone journals and the regional sources of manuscripts and reviewers. The data reveal some journals have large numbers of board members and many submissions and others have much smaller numbers of both. North America (United States and Canada), Western Europe, and China were the major sources of English-language manuscripts submitted from 2017 to 2021. Purpose: This study was designed to discover the readiness of the higher education commission (HEC)-recognized journals of Pakistan in terms of human, financial and technological resources, technical expertise, institutional support, availability of open access (OA) policy, availability of guidance and training, willingness, motivation and so on for OA journal publishing and to expose the challenges in OA journal publishing. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative research approach was used and a structured questionnaire was developed to meet the objectives of this study. A survey method was used to collect data from the editors of all 329 HEC-recognized journals in Pakistan. Findings: The respondents of all the HEC-recognized journals of Pakistan are neutral and are not of the view that they have sufficient financial, human, technological/infrastructural resources and technical expertise to continue/initiate an OA journal publishing. 'No academic reward'; and 'no monetary reward for the editorial staff' are both enormous challenges for OA journal publishing. The perceived challenges of OA have a negative impact on readiness for OA publishing. The readiness level of the respondents of the OA journals is higher as compared to the readiness level of the respondents of non-OA journals. Research limitations/implications: This study covered the lists of HEC-recognized journals of 2019. More studies may be conducted based on updated lists of HEC-recognized journals. Qualitative studies may also be conducted to discover the readiness of the HEC-recognized journals of Pakistan for OA journal publishing. Originality/value: This study is the first comprehensive study on this phenomenon and is an effort to fill this gap to invigorate scholarly literature. It may attract the attention of policymakers, funding bodies, parent institutions of the journals and the HEC regarding the readiness of journals in terms of financial, human, technological/infrastructural resources, technical expertise of the journals and challenges of journals to prompt the OA journal publishing paradigm. Artificial intelligence programs are constantly developing, becoming an increasingly powerful tool for solving various problems. First of all, attempts have been made to use artificial intelligence (AI) to generate new texts, but practice shows that the level of creativity exhibited by these programs is still insufficient for producing substantial articles. Of course, this will not prevent AI programs from developing text, including generation of not only dissimilar text, but capably accomplishing certain conceptual tasks. However, even today, it is possible to use AI programs to solve standard tasks in the preparation, editing, reviewing, processing, and publication of scientific texts. This article will provide an overview of the latest trends in the use of AI programs for academic publishing using examples of several scientific journals. We will look at different levels of AI and their impact on editorial work and review the potential of AI in complementing human input. Next, we will consider the following stages of working with scientific texts in the editorial offices of scientific journals: author and article registration in the journal system; initial analysis of the article; choice of reviewers; article review; communication with the author regarding received reviews; publication decision; proofreading and publication of work; its registration in database systems. The shrinking mainstream media plurality in Aotearoa New Zealand provides a context for examining publication of campus-based media where student and faculty editorial staff have successfully established an independent Asia-Pacific digital and print press over the past two decades. New Zealand's largest city Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) has the largest urban population of Pacific Islanders globally--more than 300,000 people in a total of 1.7 million (Pasifika New Zealand, n.d.), earning the moniker 'Polynesian capital of the world'. The presenter has had a pioneering role with four university-based journalism publications in the Pacific region as key adviser/publisher in Papua New Guinea (Uni Tavur, 1993-1998); Fiji (Wansolwara, 1998-2002); and Aotearoa/New Zealand (Pacific Scoop, 2009-2015; Asia Pacific Report, 2016 onwards), and also with two journalism school-based publications in Australia (Reportage, 1996, and The Junction, 2018-2020) (Robie, 2018). In early 2021, he was co-founder of the Asia Pacific Media Network which has emerged as a collective umbrella for academics, student journalists and independent reporters and writers producing several innovative publications, including the research journal Pacific Journalism Review. These contributors are mindful of the challenges of reportage about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Jack Amariglio was the founding editor of Rethinking MARXISM (as it was then typographically rendered) in 1988. He held the post for nine years, followed by many more years on the editorial board. During his nine years of editorship, nothing appeared in RM under Jack's name alone. His work was deeply embedded in a collective endeavor and can only be understood in relation to the others in the collective; at the same time, Jack's work was an attractive force that did much to hold the collective together. Simultaneously, and for an additional two decades beyond his editorship of RM, Jack was a member of the Merrimack College faculty. In both of these roles, Jack was an exemplar of a claim from an early issue of RM. The editors' introduction in volume 1, number 2, invited readers to quote the Herr Keuner stories by Bertolt Brecht, newly translated by Lee Baxandall: "Love," wrote Brecht-as-Keuner, "is the art of producing something with the capabilities of the other." Previous work has suggested that gender and geographical distribution (affiliation) of Editors-in-Chief (EiC) and Editorial Board (EB) members are inequitable in representation of scientific communities, and could benefit from increasing diversity of representation. Specifically, previous studies suggest that male and ethnically white (or non-minoritized groups) are overrepresented. Such differences in representation may potentially influence the scientific and scholarly record. This paper aims to build on pre-existing literature by examining the diversity of representation among EiCs and EB members in the top (Q1) journals in the “Medicine-Health Informatics” category (ranked by SCImago Journal and Country Rank, or SJR) in terms of gender as assessed by genderize.io) and geographical distribution of affiliations. Preliminary findings are consistent with those of previous work on the topic: only 25% (8/32) of the EiCs in the selected journals are female, while females only represent 32.7% (426/1303) of the EB members across journals. Furthermore, the US is highly represented in EBs, with more than half of the members, i.e., 52.2% (698/1337), being US-affiliated. Present results suggest the need for an intentional approach to diversifying representation on editorial boards of medical informatics journals. Such intention can be seen as part of a call to action from important stakeholders, including medical informatics leaders and programs, journal management and publishers, and the medical informatics and scientific community more generally. Human editors and proofreaders now face a new, and possibly serious, challenge: the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) tools that some consider to be as efficient and precise as experts in editing/proofreading. This research aims to investigate editors' and proofreaders' perceptions of current AI tools. It examines whether editors/proofreaders view AI as an opportunity or a threat and considers their insights into the future of AI tools for them. The study collected qualitative data through email questionnaires from 17 professional editors and proofreaders purposively appointed from a society of professional editors and proofreaders in Egypt. The results revealed that the responses regarding AI for editors and proofreaders are generally mixed, with a range of both positive and negative perspectives. Some responses highlight the opportunities and benefits that AI tools can bring, such as increased efficiency, time-saving, and improved productivity. Others express concerns about potential threats, such as the possibility of AI replacing humans, ethical considerations, and the need for continued human involvement in the editing/proofreading process. Overall, the attitudes toward AI tools for editing and proofreading reflect a paradoxical view of the technology's impact on the field. This study aims to investigate the attitudes and actions of scientific journal editors in China towards open access. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 Chinese editors from various scientific journals during September and October of 2022. The results indicate that the editors generally possess knowledge of open access and have implemented an appropriate open access model for their respective journals. However, the Chinese-language journal editors expressed a lack of motivation to adopt open access, unless there is a reform in the mechanism of academic publishing or a policy is imposed. On the other hand, the English-language journal editors acknowledged that they have no other choice but to adopt open access. This study helps us learn about Chinese editors' understanding and attitudes towards open access, the current status of open access in China's scientific journals, and the mechanisms of academic publishing in China. In this paper, I recount the history of the International Journal of Philosophical Studies (IJPS), and my role as Founding Editor. The IJPS emerged from the earlier annual Philosophical Studies (Maynooth), founded by Desmond Bastable in 1951 and published regularly until 1988. We update the Wood (2016) survey about academics' perceptions of the review and publication process. We find that accounting academics generally perceive the overall process has not improved or has become worse since 2015. Respondents think acceptance rates in top journals should nearly double, there is too much focus on publishing in top journals, and top journals favor certain topic areas and methodologies. They also believe that reviewers and editors underweight practice relevance and overweight the criteria of incremental contribution, method, and rigor. These opinions are held more strongly by new assistant professors than prior assistant professors, suggesting the rising generation has stronger negative views of the publication process than the past generation. The perceptions are also held by the leaders of the journals, suggesting the results are not the opinions of a few disgruntled academics. The present paper is the first introductory entry of a research project that largely questions the autonomy of Romanian publishing infrastructure during the last part of the nineteenth Century (1860-1900). More specifically, I endeavor to shape the limits of the professionalization of the Romanian publishing field in the last decades of the nineteenth Century, a pivotal period regarding the establishment of the professional profile of the publisher and the role of intermediaries in the local literary field. The degree of professionalization is understood concerning the field’s degree of autonomy. As a minor culture that after the 1848 Revolution built the national agenda around the foundation of national cultural and linguistic identity, the Romanian publishing field faced two great impediments: the subsumption of the editorial agenda by national stakes, and a poor educational and academic infrastructure. The latter affected the formation of specific competencies of cultural agents responsible for the dissemination of cultural products, on the one hand, while the former is responsible for the reduction of readership, on the other. The involvement of foreign intellectuals in Romanian literary life compensated for this lack of skills in making culture, especially in widening access to culture. Furthermore, the economic aspect made difficult publishing activities by the insertion of this quite fragile economic sector into the market system. This fact determined publishers to ultimately replace the cultural and literary stakes with commercial ones. From this standpoint, publishers and editors are first defined as merchants and then as cultural agents. The introduction of the first copyright legislation, in 1862, does not balance the asymmetric relationship between writers and publishers, both interests revolving rather out of pure cultural recognition and symbolic gain. The author reflects on her acceptance to be editor in chief for the "Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness" (JVIB) as she would then be able to read everything published therein. The dramaturgy of an empty chair in a radio or television debate is a rare phenomenon in Slovakia. Despite this, Slovak journalism theorists and practitioners are increasingly encountering the scandalization of this symbolic editorial procedure by laymen. The interpretation of some politicians that an empty chair is censorship is particularly dangerous. The aim of this theoretical study is therefore to clarify what the empty chair institute is, when and how it can be applied, when and how it may not be applied, how it is related to the process of mediatization of the world and culture, why it has become an object of politicization, and how it is connected with the global “monkey-see-monkey-do-culture”. Four publishing-related organizations, the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA), and the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), the first being dedicated specifically to the creation and dissemination of ethics policies, established a set of 16 principles related to journal and publisher transparency and “best” publishing practices. The first, second, third and fourth versions were published in 2013, 2015, 2018, and 2022, respectively. Membership of these organizations implies that members can only become such if they satisfy these principles. This paper compares the four versions to appreciate how the content has changed over time, as a historical endeavor to gather how publishing ethics has progressed over time. An assessment is also made to determine whether all principles are related to transparency and best principles, and if any may be missing. We concluded that the 16 principles offer broad guidance to several important aspects related to journal and publishing ethics and management. However, the vast majority are in general excessively broad, occasionally vague, or lack sufficient examples or specifics, despite the slight improvement between versions 3 and 4. We argue further that these weaknesses may limit their practical application. Until September 2022, there was no transparency regarding the consequences for any members that might violate, or not abide by, these principles. In the light of these arguments, we are of the opinion that the 16 principles of “best” publishing practices merit additional improvements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impact of editorial intervention on the language of published written texts has been the topic of a handful of recent empirical investigations within the world Englishes paradigm. These studies have demonstrated that the linguistic changes that editors make to texts written in world Englishes contexts are not as conservative or consistent as previously assumed, with some scholars suggesting that the sociolinguistic profiles of such editors might account for the varying behaviours noted in the corpus-based investigations. In this article, I build on recent arguments for a more considered view of the impact of editorial intervention on the language of published written texts in world Englishes contexts by examining editors' sociolinguistic profiles and the overt norms they draw on in the course of their work to explore how they orient their normative behaviour and how this may be related to the evolutionary development of their respective varieties. This article describes the outcomes of a survey of 93 editors in chief and associate editors of behavior‐analytic journals. We sought information about variables that influence their judgment of the selection of reviewers, selection of review panels, and quality of reviews. When selecting reviewers, participants rated highly expertise on the topic, history of conducting good reviews, and history of writing constructive and respectful reviews. When selecting review panels, participants rated highly stratifying reviewers based on their expertise, avoiding conflicts of interest, and the matching based on the area of expertise between reviewers and authors. When evaluating the quality of a review, participants rated highly considerations related to research design, the science underlying the main idea, and accurate interpretations of the data. Participants did not rate copyediting as important. Overall, the extent to which reviewer selection was influenced by membership in underrepresented groups varied. The article focuses on challenging the traditional interpretation of Shakespeare's use of the term "Cathayan" in "Twelfth Night" arguing that editorial glosses have incorrectly attributed a moralizing valence to the term.
