By looking at the design process of a narrative-based design fiction, this paper introduces new areas of exploration for futures practices concerned with human-scale futures -- the internal worlds of daily lives. Called Trina, the design fiction imagines new practices through the simultaneous creation of storyworld, prototypes, characters, and plot, with an emphasis on relations as opposed to things. By theorizing the design fiction creators as participant-observers in a world that emerges from a field of forces (Ingold, 2013), the paper concludes with questions that arise from a method that may help explore the interconnectedness of futures "from the inside". Fictitious future scenarios are used in the technology industry to identify new opportunities, test high risk concepts, and rally teams toward a common goal. While such visions can play a crucial role in the technology development process, Digital Humanities futures are largely absent. Software development methods suited to the creation of tools for shoppers or workers are a poor fit for the design of tools that embody the intentional fuzziness, nuanced positionalities, and reflexive activities of critical interpretation. Therefore this paper proposes a design approach that combines core concepts from critical theory with design's speculative inventiveness and introduces the subject-computer-interface as an alternative to industry's user-centered concept. Case studies investigate how this triad of meta processes -- the meta of critical interpretation, the meta of speculative reflexive design, and the meta of subject-computer-interface -- might work by using critical making to engage recent concepts from digital humanities theory to invent new digital affordances. The paper concludes with a speculative design brief that challenges designers, humanists, and computer scientists to use a meta-meta-meta approach that begins with core humanities concepts and designs outward to imagine digital humanities tools that don't yet exist. Neutrophil recruitment is pivotal to the host defense against microbial infection, but it also contributes to the immunopathology of disease. We investigated the mechanism of neutrophil recruitment in human infectious disease by means of bioinformatic pathways analysis of the gene expression profiles in the skin lesions of leprosy. In erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL), which occurs in patients with lepromatous leprosy and is characterized by neutrophil infiltration in lesions, the most overrepresented biological functional group was cell movement, including E-selectin, which was coordinately regulated with interleukin 1β (IL-1β). In vitro activation of Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), up-regulated in ENL lesions, triggered induction of IL-1β, which together with interferon γ induced E-selectin expression on and neutrophil adhesion to endothelial cells. Thalidomide, an effective treatment for ENL, inhibited this neutrophil recruitment pathway. The gene expression profile of ENL lesions comprised an integrated pathway of TLR2 and Fc receptor activation, neutrophil migration, and inflammation, providing insight into mechanisms of neutrophil recruitment in human infectious disease. A novel mechanism by which T cells contribute to host defense against microbial pathogens is release of the antimicrobial protein granulysin. We investigated the role of granulysin in human infectious disease using leprosy as a model. Granulysin-expressing T cells were detected in cutaneous leprosy lesions at a six-fold greater frequency in patients with the localized tuberculoid as compared with the disseminated lepromatous form of the disease. In contrast, perforin, a cytolytic molecule that colocalizes with granulysin in cytotoxic granules, was expressed at similar levels across the spectrum of disease. Within leprosy lesions, granulysin colocalized in CD4+ T cells and was expressed in CD4+ T-cell lines derived from skin lesions. These CD4+ T-cell lines lysed targets by the granule exocytosis pathway and reduced the viability of mycobacteria in infected targets. Given the broad antimicrobial spectrum of granulysin, these data provide evidence that T-cell release of granulysin contributes to host defense in human infectious disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How can philosophers incorporate the Digital Humanities into their classrooms? And why should they? In this paper, I explore answers to these questions as I detail what I have dubbed "The Monuments Project" and describe how this project engages with Digital Humanities and teaches students to connect theoretical philosophical concepts with their lives. Briefly, the Monuments Project asks students to apply concepts discussed in our philosophy class (in my case, a Global Aesthetics class) with a monument in their environment. Instead of a traditional paper, students upload MP3s of their observations, pictures and/or drawings of the monument, and text-based responses. The goal of the Monument Project is twofold: to get students to connect what they have learned to a sense of place=the place where they live, and to introduce them to the Digital Humanities. This article discusses best practices for teaching text encoding in undergraduate literary studies courses. It examines learning outcomes associated with text encoding and ways of incorporating encoding into the teaching of literary analysis, as well as advantages and challenges, concluding that encoding activities and assignments offer unique opportunities for learning. This new field has its origin in the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century. From the research point of view, through the analysis of the scientific production of the main academic databases, we provide here an overview of the international panorama of digital humanities, looking at the main countries, institutions, areas of knowledge and leading topics in this discipline. The theme of my proposal concerns quantitative methods and digital analysis in the recent literary theory. Starting from the assumption of the impossibility of accessing traditional ways of reading a textual corpus in its integrity (here I refer both to the exponential growth of interest for ex-centric literature, following the explosion of post-colonial studies, and to the discovery, as a result of several quantitative analyses, of a serious number of exponents for the central literatures), the quantitative research, and also the updated version of the literary analysis by means of the informational technology offers an ample theoretical area that deserves to be debated and disseminated in the Romanian academic field. From a comparatist perspective, I will try to trace the specific characteristics for the new paradigm of digital humanities and for the way in which the new methods of research can generate mutations of the comparatist discourse. My attempt is to make clear the concepts of quantitative research (distant reading, close reading) and digital humanities, and also to highlight the specific characteristics of the notions that are in the scope of this concept.Turthermore, I will try to question the relation between the methodological turn related to the most recent technologies and the traditional ways of reading and interpretation. Last but not least, I attempt to highlight the relation of influence between theories which precede the assessment of the concept digital, per se, and the ones that lead the research towards employing technological resources. Digital humanities is a multidisciplinary field that leverages digital technology and methodologies to explore and answer questions pertaining to the humanities. It is a dynamic intersection between the domains of computer science and the humanities, promoting innovation, collaboration, and research at the highest levels. However, as a relatively young field, the methodological foundations of the digital humanities are still being established. This paper seeks to explore the core methodologies that underpin digital humanities. The modelling of data, information, and knowledge can be considered one of the foundations of digital humanities. One of the arguments confirming this is that the development of digital humanities and the development of technologies in general are the development of ways to formalise and present data and knowledge. Science has come a long way from the modelling and computer representation of numbers to generating texts and art on the basis of prescribed inputs. With the advent of artificial intelligence, especially machine learning and deep learning techniques, the potential for more sophisticated and nuanced data modelling in the digital humanities has expanded significantly, linking computational capabilities with humanistic inquiries in unprecedented ways. The article considers the periodization, classification, and trends of approaches and methods for modelling data, information and knowledge in the humanities. The article provides an overview of existing examples and data models of different complexity from various humanities disciplines, including history, linguistics, literary criticism, and cultural studies. E-lexicography has not got long history in Latvia: the first electronic dictionaries appeared in the late 1990s. However, many achievements can be traced over the past twenty years: electronic dictionaries of Early Latvian (https://tezaurs.lv/lvvv), Standard Latvian (https:// llvv.tezaurs.lv/) and Modern Latvian (https://mlvv.tezaurs.lv/) have been published. Also, databases for crowdsourcing of Latvian place names (www.vietvardi.lv) and regional words (https://apvidvardi.lu.lv) have been created. These resources comprise more than 100 thousand words each of which is accompanied by a linguistic description, examples and data of registration. All of the e-lexicografic sources in Latvian are elaborated in cooperation between the Latvian Language Institute and the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Sciences of the University of Latvia. Based on this experience, the article deals with the history, specificity and importance of the digitization of Latvian language from the point of view of content creators of digital tools. The article is structured into three subchapters. The first part provides an insight into the history of Latvian e-lexicography, the second part analyses the principles of compiling the electronic lexicographic sources in Latvia (including the analysis of microstructure and macrostructure of published electronic dictionaries). The third part deals with the pros and cons of Latvian lexicographic sources as opposed to printed sources (the analysis of corpus integration, data sufficiency and unification, efficiency of access, customization, hybridization, user input is provided). The aim of the article is to outline priorities for the future of Latvian electronic lexicography. The analysis of Latvian electronic dictionaries reveals four areas where Latvian e-lexicography still requires an improvement. Firstly, there is a lack of proformas in all electronic dictionaries of Latvian language which could help to unify the structure of definition and meaning of the entries. Secondly, not all Latvian electronic dictionaries comprise an alphabetical list of lemmas which could help to find an entry without knowing the spelling of the word. Thirdly, audio pronunciation for each entry is necessary in order to provide real (standardized) pronunciation. What is meant by Digital Humanities? This paper presents and discusses characterizations of Digital Humanities, with emphasis on methodological and ethical problems related to the use of Big Data in human sciences. There is still no consensus regarding the definition of Digital Humanities, but there is a general agreement that collaborative inter/multi/transdisciplinary practices are involved in the study of computational processing of massive amounts of data available in areas of human sciences. Studies concerning digital resources, electronic publishing, and digitized historical newspaper collections, among others, have played a prominent role in these areas. This paper addresses questions about the genuine interdisciplinary nature of research on Digital Humanities, and discusses ethical issues associated with Big Data analytics, from a complex systems perspective. Emphasis is given to implications (positive and negative) of the use of information and communication technology in studies of the dynamics of human autonomy. Research in the humanities increasingly depends on how information is structured and managed and how, on the basis of that information, new knowledge is produced. Additionally, participatory approaches, which often rely on web information systems as their supportive infrastructure, have made an impact on the most recent historiographical trends, in particular in the methodological framework of digital humanities. The aim of this paper was to produce, from an operational and implementation perspective, a review of software solutions frequently used to develop web information systems for research projects in humanities and cultural heritage, in order to provide an understanding of the various possibilities available and their positives and limitations, also based on different users' requirements. An individual and comparative analysis of sixteen different application frameworks commonly used in these fields, either generic or developed for a specific research domain, has been carried out, considering their main functionalities, strengths, and weaknesses. The achieved results facilitate critical and reasoned decision-making among several available options, guiding the makers of those systems, both researcher(s) and developers(s), and providing them also with a common ground of terms and use cases to facilitate their necessary dialogue. There is growing attention to student assessments designed to reach beyond the classroom, including assessments with an immediate or future audience. The impact of audience, however, has not been examined in multimodal assessments across continents, institutions, disciplines, and teaching contexts. Using qualitative data, this article examines the impact on student learning of incorporating audience and awareness of audience in diverse settings through multimodal projects. These include a core assignment in an interdisciplinary, semester-long graduate class in the United States, a year-long capstone project for geography undergraduates in Northern Ireland, and a supplemental assignment for graduate and undergraduate biology students in Norway. This article investigates the impact of audience through multimodal assessments across these three settings and concludes that it can positively influence student learning, motivation, and skill development. Data Mining is one of the emerging subfields in computer science and statistics and focuses on finding patterns or relations between large datasets to solve problems and collect in-depth analysis. The use of data mining in literary and cultural datasets allows us to better understand and analyze cultural patterns and past events. This paper explores how the process is carried out and highlights the areas where it can be used to obtain vital information. The paper contains a few applications where data mining is used to collect comparative analysis of past events, understanding the spread of a disease which caused 500 million deaths worldwide, predicting the author of the world's oldest anthem based on the style of writing. Furthermore, the scope of data mining in humanities is discussed and it is hoped this paper will expand readers' thought and provoke ideas about the new and advanced methods used in the field of humanities to have greater insight into our past, culture, and literature. This article describes the anti-racist project developed by the Arquivo Edgard Leuenroth (AEL — Edgard Leuenroth Archive) at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil that involves assembling collections pertaining to black social organizations in the state of São Paulo for preservation and dissemination. The project understands the relation between archives and anti-racism in two dimensions. One considers the very gesture of incorporating materials into the archival apparatus and the other involves the search for a new participatory paradigm for archival practices and decision-making. The collections enable us to reimagine the role of black organizations in the history of the country and its future, thus preserving and ensuring access to them is part of a broader initiative to redefine the place of the archival institution in policies aiming to dismantle racism. Scholarly digital storytelling combines academic research and digital skills to communicate scholarly work within and beyond the classroom. This article presents three case studies that demonstrate efforts to integrate scholarly digital storytelling, a technology-enhanced assessment, across disciplines, geographic locations, and teaching contexts. The case studies originate in the United States, Northern Ireland [UK], and Norway, and represent learning across multiple disciplines, including history, higher education, geography, and biology. This article explores the potential for scholarly digital storytelling, when carefully planned, scaffolded, and implemented, to engage students in authentic learning, teaching students to think deeply and creatively about disciplinary content while creating sharable digital products. This special issue of Anglia addresses the wide-ranging transformations digitization has created in the field of book history. Several decades after the birth of Digital Humanities, the contributors to this special issue take stock of the challenges, promises and achievements of digital editing and cataloguing of medieval manuscripts. In addition, the articles discuss and assess the potential of computational methods, of big data and algorithms, of text mining techniques, stylometrics, multi-dimensional scaling and clustering, together with navigational tools such as scatterplots and dendrograms. Archives are being digitised on an enormous scale worldwide, and the connections between Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne Atlas and the contemporary digital accumulation of data have not been lost on contemporary scholars. By problematising what I suggest is a simplified relation between repetition and replication in the transmission of Warburg's body of work into a digital era, I believe that an engagement with contemporary digital discourse provides the possibility of seeing his work in a new light while allowing for insights into how Warburg might be instrumental in rendering visible possible discrepancies between individual entities and larger collective patterns, whether within his Mnemosyne Atlas or among datasets more broadly speaking. To a large extent, the world has come to embrace digitalization which currently permeates all human endeavors and life. However, the process of digitalizing human beings themselves, making them Transhuman and allowing the integration of the digital into every aspect of our daily life has made life both paradoxically appreciative and problematic as it increases the global nature of humanity and its endeavors, posing threats as well as benefits. Merging Transhumanism (H+) with the Digital Humanities (DH) may minimize those threats but the dual evolving humantechnological thoughts have been hoofing at a distance to each other for decades whereas innately they share the same perceptions on the future of the digitalization and human beings. This paper is channeled towards breaking the barriers between the two through the help of the critical comparative lens from the conceptual theoretical framework called Digital Knowledge Integration (DKI) using hypothetic-deductive method of reading two e-literatures: Digital_Humanities by Anne Burdick, Johanna Drucker, Peter Lunenfeld, Todd Presner & Jeffrey Schnapp published in 2012 and The Transhumanist Reader: Classical and Contemporary Essays on the Science. Technology, and Philosophy of Human Future edited by Max More and Natasha Vita-More in 2013 including other literatures as we need them. Dans cet article, nous discuterons de l'intégration du numérique à la sémiotique et proposerons qu'une modélisation conceptuelle puisse offrir un pont de dialogue entre ces deux domaines classiquement cloisonnés. Plus précisément, nous avancerons l'hypothèse que tout projet de recherche qui en appellera à l'informatique soit une démarche scientifique que s'il construit une théorie qui contient, en plus des modèles classiques que sont les modèles formel, computationnel et physique, un modèle conceptuel. Ce lieu, où les chercheur-es conceptualisent les multiples dimensions de leur objet de recherche, sera alors défini en tant que socle d'une relation solide entre la sémiotique et l'informatique. Nous verrons que les différentes définitions du modèle conceptuel convergent vers la thèse soutenant que la connaissance scientifique met en œuvre une instance de conceptualisation qui doit identifier les diverses dimensions du problème en plus de devoir s'exprimer de manière à ce qu'elle soit communicable entre les membres des communautés épistémiques. More precisely, we will put forward the hypothesis that any research project that will call for computer science is a scientific process if it constructs a theory that contains, in addition to the classical models that are the formal, computational and physical models, a conceptual model. This place, where researchers conceptualize the multiple dimensions of their research subject, will then be defined as the foundation for a strong relationship between semiotics and computer science. We will see that the different definitions of the conceptual model converge on the thesis that scientific knowledge implements a conceptualization process that must identify the various dimensions of the problem in addition to having to express itself in such a way that it can be communicated between members of epistemic communities. We will see, finally, that a semiotic research project requires the construction of such a model in order to describe, generalize and select problems and that this same conceptual model will also be necessary if the semiotician uses computer science in the context of his or her research. Definitions of digital abound at the present time, but there is a thread amongst the most vital of these that questions the relevance of human agency and evaluative choice. If we follow where technological advances take us we come to the unsettling conclusion that 'machine reading' has usurped more analogue procedures and that algorithmic formulae have supplanted human judgement; the opportunities that new software provide can outstrip our imagination in framing research questions. Literary history, however, addresses how we might make sense of the One as well as the Many, and, when confronted by a string of word- or phrase-patterns, it is not that our findings speak for themselves; we have to conjure their value. This is exemplified by analysing where some digital searches might take us in relation to Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, basing the reading on all the repetitions of gentile/gentle, kind, and credit. The sensitive interrogation of the play's electronic text does point us to salient 'returns' and patterning signalled by following where the significant iterations of these words might take us, but what we make of these lines of enquiry eventually calls on human evaluation and volition. The Navigli Project is a virtual exhibit that illustrates the cultural history of the waterways of Milan, Italy. Inaugurated in 2016 in the context of an experimental Humanities Lab, this digital mapping project encourages the cultural conservation of water in Milan and promotes water education among its citizens. After providing a very brief history of Milan's waterways (which were almost entirely covered in the 1930s), this article describes the materials and digital platforms the project utilizes and its many objectives, which include expanding the borders of Italian Studies and Eco-Digital Humanities while remaining deeply rooted in each discipline, serving as reference point for anyone interested in urban waters and those of Milan in particular, and providing students with a broad set of digital and thinking skills that are easily transferable to other courses, projects, disciplines, and careers. Ultimately, the article shows how the Navigli Project anchors artistic and cultural practices to the "real" world by following concepts, metaphors, and creative strategies across media, time, and space and thus draws attention to their rootedness in the materiality of the world. In the first part, the emphasis falls on the term "digital turn" and on its specific uses and extensions in humanities, as DH (digital humanities), on the one hand, and as digital literary studies/computer literary studies (DLS/ CLS)/ computational linguistics (CL), on the other. In the second part, we zoom in the field of DLS/ CLS and analyze the way in which it has been localized, operationalized, institutionalized and understood in the Romanian academic environment and publications (DH-targeted journals, humanities journals, and cultural magazines), in higher education curricula (master/ bachelor programs of study), and in designing evaluation standards for DH/ DLS/ CLS research projects (methodologies for funding national research). In the third part, we provide a down-to-earth approach to Romanian DLS by bringing out the experience with digitization, format conversion, manual cleaning, encoding, annotation, and with various editing, quantitative analysis, and data management tools (AntConc, TXM, StyloR, Nooj, Heurist, Transkribus, Oxygen etc.), acquired throughout the implementation of Hai-Ro Project (Hajduk Novels in Romania during the Long Nineteenth Century: digital edition and corpus analysis assisted by computational tools). What we propose in this article is to show, based on an example, how new teaching methods are adopted in the field of philology in an age where we move from an analog world to a digital one. Thus, we will present, first, some positive and negative opinions about the digital era in which we move. Secondly, we will focus on the methodology used in the Department of Romance Philology from the University of Zurich for the creation of an online course of linguistics and another of Romance literature for students of the first course. Visual, audiovisual, and multisensory media are gaining increasing importance. The latter are hybrid media that appeal not only to sight and hearing, but also to other senses (e.g., smell, touch, and motion). Considering this media development, both the digital humanities and what might (as a working hypothesis) be called digital law explore visualization, audiovisualization, and multisensorization. These fields have so far largely gone separate ways, without influencing each other, although both face similar problems and questions in investigating visualization, audiovisualization, and multisensorization. This paper makes an innovative contribution to understanding these phenomena by bringing the digital humanities and digital law closer together. It also advances interdisciplinary understanding by considering the reflections voiced at the 2017 Centenary Conference of Zürich University Library and by going far beyond the topics of that conference. This article addresses the problems that pertain to macro-historical data in music research. By presenting examples from recent research on European ladies' orchestras of the late nineteenth century, I aim to establish how large data sets could be used in a meaningful way. First, I shall present an overview of source materials. Second, methods for analyzing concert programmes will be critically assessed. The present article studies eight of the twelve reports of the Stanford Literary Lab (SLL) to understand why the revolutionary practices of the lab, and by extension of the digital humanities, have not yet changed literary history, as the lab itself admits. The article examines the reports with two related cultural-semantic tools, each of which is introduced via the Pixar movie Brave. First, the interpretations of the reports are placed within a basic semantic grid organized into four quadrants by a nature-society axis and a past-present axis, which shows that the interpretations are invariably situated in the present-society quadrant. This analysis, while necessary, merely proves that SLL operates within a certain cultural climate. The real test lies in ascertaining whether this cultural climate affects the interpretation of novel data. To do so, the article looks for the reaction of SLL to novel data in two reports. The reports are shown to domesticate novelty by explaining it through standard alethic/deontic patterns, even though the data are novel precisely because the patterns largely fail to explain them. The article closes by asking whether such patterns limit or enable thinking and what this means for the digital humanities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
