Magnetometers have received considerable attention in recent years. Magnetic components offer an alternative methodology to improve the sensitivity. Due to their exceedingly small structural dimensions, metasurfaces exhibit significant competitiveness in field modulation. A magnetic field concentration phenomenon of spheres at the nanoscale is presented in this paper. The sensitivity of a magnetometer is, therefore, improved through the enhanced static or quasistatic magnetic field by the nanosphere concentrator. Magnetic field redistribution due to the assistance of nanospheres is discussed in this paper using the finite element method. The numerical method is verified with classical analytical equations with a single sphere. The simulation results show that the magnetic field concentrates in the near field behind the nanosphere along the direction of the magnetic flux density. The radius, material or permeability exactly, and distribution are critical parameters to the concentration strength. The magnetic gain of a single nanosphere with typical positive permeability of the typical soft magnetic material reaches 3, and thus, the field along the magnetic flux direction concentrates. Furthermore, the amplification factor is more prominent with the nanosphere arrays compared to a single sphere with the same scale of size, and amplification improves with the sphere numbers and distributions in the array arrangement, which provides a novel approach for the designing of the magnetic flux concentrator being monolithically integrated with the magnetometer probe. A Conductor on Round Core (CORC) cable wound with a high-temperature superconductor is an important cable concept for high-current density applications. It is widely used in large power systems because of its advantages of good flexibility and high engineering current density. However, the complex design structure of CORC cable makes it very difficult to understand its electromagnetic properties (such as AC loss). In particular, the different winding directions of each layer in multi-layer cable have a great influence on its electromagnetic characteristics. In this paper, the H-method is used to solve the electromagnetism and mechanics equations. The influence of the winding direction of CORC cable on its electromagnetic field distribution characteristics, AC loss, and mechanical variation under the action of external magnetic field is investigated. The AC loss study of single-layer cable reveals that when the applied magnetic field is increased from 0.01 to 0.02 and 0.03 T, the AC loss peak of the cable increases by 107 and 103 orders of magnitude, respectively, indicating that the effect of low applied magnetic field on the AC loss of the cable is more significant. For multi-layer cables, cables with opposite winding directions have a greater depth of current density penetration than cables with the same winding direction. In addition, the mechanical variations of multi-layer cables with different winding orientations are explored. The results show that the Mises stress in the cable with the same winding direction is about 32% higher than that of the cable with the opposite winding direction, which indicates that the method of winding the cable in the opposite direction between adjacent layers of tape can avoid excessive mechanical stress. Magnetic Johnson noise is an important consideration for many applications involving precision magnetometry, and its significance will only increase in the future with improvements in measurement sensitivity. The fluctuation–dissipation theorem can be utilized to derive analytic expressions for magnetic Johnson noise in certain situations, but when used in conjunction with finite element analysis tools, the combined approach is particularly powerful as it provides a practical means to calculate the magnetic Johnson noise arising from conductors of arbitrary geometry and permeability. In this paper, we demonstrate this method to be one of the most comprehensive approaches presently available to calculate thermal magnetic noise. In particular, its applicability is shown to not be limited to cases where the noise is evaluated at a point in space but also can be expanded to include cases where the magnetic field detector has a more general shape, such as a finite-size loop, a gradiometer, or a detector that consists of a polarized atomic species trapped in a volume. Two-dimensional spintronics has become a hot topic in recent years due to its advantages and potential in manipulating electron spins. In this paper, the electronic structures and magnetic properties of the Janus NbSSe monolayer are calculated using first-principles and Monte Carlo methods. Our study shows that the ground state of the material is a ferromagnetic metal. Under carrier doping, it undergoes a second-order phase transition from metal to half-metal, achieving 100% spin polarization, and enhancing or weakening ferromagnetic coupling. The value of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy is 570.96 μeV, and doping with an appropriate concentration of holes can transform the easy magnetization axis from in-plane to out-of-plane. Since the out-of-plane mirror symmetry is broken, we study the charge changes in the layer under the action of an external electric field. Due to the combined action of the external electric field and the built-in electric field, the layer exhibits a unique charge transfer mode. It is predicted that the Curie temperature of the material is about 156 K. When doped with 4.01 × 1013 cm−2 (0.04 holes per atom) concentration holes, the Curie temperature can reach about 350 K, indicating that the Curie temperature of the material can be reasonably controlled by regulating the carrier concentration. The coercive force calculated from the hysteresis loop is 0.01 T, and its hysteresis loss is low, showing its response to the external magnetic field. Spin pumping from canted antiferromagnets is a cutting-edge topic in modern spintronics. The interest for fundamental and applied research that these materials arouse is related to their unusual structure, namely, with a small canting of the magnetic sublattices, which is explained by the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction. Through this effect, it becomes possible to experimentally study quasi-ferromagnetic resonance spectra and spin pumping in the range of tens of GHz at room temperature. In this paper, an experimental and theoretical investigation of spin pumping from an antiferromagnet with weak ferromagnetism, α -Fe 2 O 3 , is carried out. The conversion of the precession of the magnetization vector, excited by an alternating magnetic microwave field, into a constant voltage is realized using the inverse spin Hall effect in the hematite/heavy metal structure. Using a constant magnetic field up to 5 kOe, the resonant frequency of such a detector is tunable over a wide range up to 32 GHz with potential sensitivity reaching 10.1 μ V/W. Confirmation of the measurement of the spin current is the change in the sign of V sp when the polarity of the constant magnetic field alters. We believe that these studies will make a major contribution to the understanding of the physics of the spin-pumping effect from antiferromagnets and will also help in the development of devices for quantum technologies and next-generation communication technologies. This paper describes the hydrodynamic behavior of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles modified with citric acid (CA-SPIONs) in suspension under alternating current magnetic fields given interparticle and inter-cluster dipole–dipole interactions. The cluster size of the CA-SPIONs is modulated to control interparticle interactions, and the ionic concentration of the CA-SPION suspension is varied to control inter-cluster interactions. Dynamic magnetic susceptibility (DMS) measurements of the CA-SPION suspensions under alternating current magnetic fields indicate that the interparticle interaction by clustering and the inter-cluster interaction by increasing the ionic concentration cause frequency spectra modulation, such as their broadening in the low-frequency region and a decrease in the Brownian relaxation frequency. The experimentally obtained DMS spectra differ from the spectra numerically calculated from the hydrodynamic size distribution of CA-SPIONs using the Debye relaxation model without considering the magnetic interactions; the differences are attributed to the interparticle and inter-cluster dipole–dipole interactions. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of dynamics of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and facilitate nanoparticle parameter optimization for tailored applications in the biomedical field, particularly for their efficacy and precision in liquid-phase biosensing and imaging. The impact of a time-varying external magnetic field on carbon nanotubes has been studied using Maxwell's equations in the mentioned articles. However, the Maxwell's equations are erroneously presented in the papers. The incorrect Maxwell's equations, their derivatives, and the Lorentz force equations have all been examined in this work. In this article, we have endeavored to ensure that the equations are formatted correctly and have made an effort to do so. We have made an effort to intuitively correct the equations' errors. We did not comment on the other portions of the mentioned articles; instead, we restricted ourselves to the examination of the impact of Maxwell's equations and Lorentz force equations. Crossed-Field Vacuum Electron Devices are ubiquitous in the High-Power Microwave field in either an oscillator/source or amplifier variant. A typical configuration consists of a magnetically insulated laminar electron flow in an anode–cathode gap with crossed electric (∝ V , voltage) and magnetic (B-) fields and a series of open resonant cavities/vanes located on the anode block that serve as a slow-wave structure (SWS). The SWS slows the phase velocity of the electromagnetic signal down so that the wave becomes synchronous with a layer of the electron flow but is often neglected when calculating the Hull magnetic field necessary to insulate the electrons. In particular, the guiding design equation for the critical cutoff B-field assumes a smooth anode wall. In this paper, we show that such an assumption severely narrows the operating regime in B–V space and that upon inclusion of a revised Hull Cutoff condition taking into account the SWS, operation at lower B and higher V is possible. Giant magnetostrictive material (GMM) is well known for its hysteresis behaviors related to multiple influencing factors, such as bias magnetic field and excitation level. This feature greatly challenges the loss prediction of giant magnetostrictive transducers. The existing loss prediction models need further improvement to cover the sensitive magnetic properties of GMM. In this paper, the variations of the iron losses with the operation conditions are interpreted by the variations of the Jiles–Atherton model parameters, and a concise parameter identification procedure with great generalizability is proposed. The iron losses of Terfenol-D under variable excitation levels and the DC biases are further investigated. With the proposed procedure, the introduced eight additional modification parameters for the original Jiles–Atherton model are easy to obtain, and merely a few hysteresis loops of Terfenol-D are involved. An experimental setup is established for further demonstration. Comparisons between the measured and calculated results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Throughout the bias-excitation space within the frequency range under investigation, the iron losses can be precisely estimated with an acceptable error of less than 5%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Investigating high-performance and stable spintronics devices has been a research hotspot in recent years. In this paper, we employed first-principles methods and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations to explore the structure, electronic, and magnetic properties of monolayer NbSe2, as well as its behavior under carrier concentration modulation. The research on the electronic structure reveals that by introducing an appropriate amount of holes, the material can undergo a transition from metal to a half-metal state, achieving 100% high spin polarization. Investigation of magnetic crystalline anisotropy shows that the magnetic crystal anisotropy energy of 1210 μeV in out-of-plane is beneficial to maintain ferromagnetic order at high temperatures. In addition, doping with suitable carriers can effectively enhance or strengthen the ferromagnetic coupling in NbSe2 so that the magnetization easy axis is shifted. This reveals the potential application prospects of NbSe2 in electronically controlled spintronic devices. Analysis of the Fermi surface shows that both holes and electron doping increase the Fermi velocity of the material. The effect of hole doping is particularly significant, indicating its potential application in Fermi velocity engineering. Under the theoretical framework of the extended two-dimensional Ising model, based on MC simulation, the Curie temperature (TC) of NbSe2 is predicted to be 162 K. The effects of carrier concentration and the magnetic field on the magnetic and thermal properties of monolayer NbSe2 are simulated. The results show that appropriately increasing the hole doping concentration and magnetic field is conducive to obtaining ferromagnetic half-metallic materials with TC higher than room temperature, which provides theoretical support for experimental preparation. The vibration of a transformer core induced by magnetostriction is closely related to the environment and safety of devices. The DC bias excitation leads to the over saturation of the transformer core and causes more severe vibration. In this paper, a magnetic-mechanical strong coupling model based on a fixed-point time-periodic 2D finite element method with excitation voltage and DC bias current as the input is established in which the vector magnetic potential A, winding current I, and displacement in the core u are simultaneously taken as solution variables, and the fixed-point reluctivity is introduced to deal with the nonlinear problem of the core. In this model, the magnetic field and mechanical field are associated with the piezomagnetic equations and variational principle, and the circuit and magnetic fields are connected through the law of electromagnetic induction. The equivalent thickness of the core model and the determination of the initial value are discussed. A test transformer with a laminated core is made for experimental measurement. The accuracy and efficiency of the model proposed are verified by comparing the calculated results with the experimental results, and the influence of DC bias components on the magnetic characteristics and vibration of the transformer core is analyzed. In this paper, we have investigated red light (∼ 660 nm) and magnetic field dependence of impedance across (100 − x)% ZnO(zinc oxide)– x % rGO(reduced graphene oxide)/La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO)/ITO (x =0,0.6,0.8,100) heterostructure devices. Field-induced scattering due to the spin filter effect and spin polarized tunneling (SPT) have been extracted from the zinc oxide–reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite/LSMO space charge region (ZnO–rGO/LSMO SCR) and the LSMO active region of the devices, respectively. Higher SPT leads to higher LSMO SCR scattering across the devices. Devices with higher rGO contents could not be fitted with two RC circuits as resistance values because the two phenomena are incomparable with each other. Light-induced scattering has been observed at the ZnO–rGO nanocomposite active region and ZnO–rGO/LSMO SCR of the devices. For composite devices with x =0.8 and 0.6, higher photocarrier generation at ZnO–rGO nanocomposite active layer leads to enhanced scattering at LSMO SCR with light illumination. Light-dependent scattering at both regions, however, follows almost same decreasing trend for bare devices with x =0, 100. The decreasing trend of light-dependent scattering for ZnO/LSMO/ITO and rGO/LSMO/ITO bare devices suddenly gets reversed and, eventually, follows an increasing trend at magnetic field ambiance of 0.5 and 1 kOe, respectively. The LSMO SCRs of the bare devices got enhanced with the field, leading to a light-dependent response similar to composite devices at the higher field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports that the in situ growth magnetic field (Hg) during magnetic-phase CoFeB deposition impacts the electric-field control of magnetic anisotropy in Co40Fe40B20/(011)-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.7Ti0.3O3 [CoFeB/(011)-PMN-PT] composite multiferroic heterostructures at room temperature. In the Hg1 mode (in situ Hg along the [ 01 1 ¯ ] direction of the ferroelectric PMN-PT substrate), the electric-field-controlled modulation ratios of the magnetic coercivity HC and saturation magnetic field HS are approximately −47% and +156%, respectively. However, in the Hg2 mode (in situ Hg along the [100] direction of the ferroelectric PMN-PT substrate) of the CoFeB/(011)-PMN-PT multiferroic heterostructure, the electric-field-controlled modulation ratios of the magnetic coercivity HC and saturation magnetic field HS can reach as high as +162% and +393%, respectively. Moreover, the electric-field-controlled magnetic coercive field HC exhibits a butterfly shape when plotted versus the applied electric fields in both modes, which matches the in-plane butterfly strain loop of the ferroelectric PMN-PT substrate. However, the electric-field-controlled saturation magnetic field HS presents a square loop, which is very consistent with the ferroelectric loop of the PMN-PT substrate. This result may be ascribed to the distinct pathway of the ferroelastic domain switching in the (011)-oriented PMN-PT substrate. In the paper, a magneto-mechanic hysteresis model for giant magnetostrictive materials is suggested by considering the effect of the domain rotation and domain wall motion on the magnetization process under prestress and the applied magnetic field. The coercive force, which is magneto-mechanic dependent, is proposed instead of a pinning constant in the Jiles–Atherton model. The model can well predict the characteristics of a magnetization-applied field curve and magnetostrictive strain-applied field curve shown in the experiment, especially the "overturn phenomenon" under different compressive prestresses. Furthermore, the effect of the microstructure parameter, such as the ratio of the domain wall thickness to the internal stress wavelength, the amplitude of internal stress, the ratio of the domain wall thickness to the inclusion radius, and inclusion consistency, on coercive force under applied prestress can also be described by the model. Pulsed electric field-induced electroporation has been widely used, but its specific perforation theory has not been fully elucidated. Therefore, this Perspective paper takes as a clue the dynamic development relationship between the pore energy and the pore state in cell membranes. First, based on the contribution of line tension, surface tension, steric repulsion, and applied electric field to pore energy, the theoretical models of reversible electroporation of a microsecond pulsed electric field and irreversible electroporation of a high-frequency nanosecond pulsed electric field are reviewed. Then, the contribution of elastic strain energy to pore energy is increased, and the theoretical model of pulsed electric field electroporation considering the mechanical properties of cell membranes is further reviewed. Based on the contribution of magnetic stress generated by the magnetic field and the gradient magnetic field to pore energy, a theoretical model of cell membrane magnetoporation under the action of a pulsed magnetic field is proposed, which lays a theoretical foundation for the popularization and application of non-contact cell membrane perforation technology. A wideband reflective type metasurface with both functionality cross and circular polarization conversions at different frequencies is presented in this paper. The meta-atom of the designed metasurface consists of six L-shaped metallic patches. A patching arrangement for the meta-atom yielded both polarization conversion ratio (PCR) > 0.9 over the 10.3–15.26 GHz band and axial ratio (AR) < 3 dB over the 8.97–9.75 GHz and 17.51–23.93 GHz bands. More than 30% fractional bandwidth is achieved for both functions. The physical mechanism of linear and circular polarization conversion has been analyzed by the spatial profile of electric and magnetic fields. The prototype of the designed metasurface consisting of 25 × 25 meta-atoms is fabricated and experimental results are in reasonable agreement with the simulated results. Electrodynamic suspension (EDS) with a linear permanent magnet Halbach array, which can be used in ultrahigh-speed maglev systems, has gained increasing attention in recent years. However, inefficient calculation methods of electromagnetic forces restrict the stability research of EDS systems. Hence, an efficient 3D analytical model of the electromagnetic force is established in the paper based on an improved analytical model of the source magnetic field excited by the Halbach array, and then the application conditions of the model are studied. Finally, the analytical results are compared with the experimental results, which are provided by the experiments carried out on a high-speed rotating experiment platform with a flywheel. The results show that the proposed model can shorten the computation time of electromagnetic force to less than 10 ms and the relative errors of analytical results are around 5% under the conditions ① w p / τ ≥ 2.5 , w d / w p ≥ 1.5 or ② w p / τ ≥ 4 , w d / w p ≥ 1 (τ is the pole pitch of the Halbach array, w p is the width of the permanent magnet, w d is the width of the conducting plate). In this work, we describe the synthesis of novel electrically and magnetically dual-driven Janus particles for a handwriting-enabled twisting ball display via the microfluidic technique. One hemisphere of the Janus particles contains a charge control agent, which allows the display color to be controlled by applying a voltage and superparamagnetic nanoparticles, allows handwriting by applying a magnetic field to the display. We fabricated a twisting ball display utilizing these Janus particles and tested the electric color control and handwriting using a magnet. As a result, the display was capable of permitting handwriting with a small magnet in addition to conventional color control using an applied voltage (80 V). Handwriting performance was improved by increasing the concentration of superparamagnetic nanoparticles and was determined to be possible even when 80V was applied across the electrodes for 4 wt.% superparamagnetic nanoparticles in one hemisphere. This improvement was impossible when the concentration was reduced to 2 wt.% superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The technology presented in our work can be applied to low-cost, lightweight, highly visible, and energy-saving electronic message boards and large whiteboards because the large-size display can be fabricated easily due to its simple structure. We present the levitation and residing at particular places of human breast cancer (T47D) cells on a magnetic microsystem quickly fabricated by printing. The microsystem consists of arrays of soft magnetic elements and is put adjacent to a bulk magnet. Under a magnetic field generated by the magnet, elements are magnetized, obtaining a significant magnetic field strength and a high magnetic field gradient in the micro-space above them. The field applies a magnetic force on the cells as they are dropped to the surfaces of the elements. As a result, levitation and a stable position for each cell are observed. The levitation and position of a cell can be predicted by a theory that takes into account the magnetic, buoyant, and gravitational forces on the cells. The influence of Co and Ni ion doping on the crystal structure, phase transitions, and magnetic properties of the Fe7Se8 system has been investigated. The compounds studied are (Fe0.987Ni0.013)7Se8, (Fe0.955Ni0.045)7Se8, (Fe0.915Ni0.085)7Se8, (Fe0.89Ni0.11)7Se8, (Fe0.79Ni0.21)7Se8, (Fe0.975Co0.025)7Se8, (Fe0.951Co0.049)7Se8, and (Fe0.91Co0.09)7Se8 as well as the parent compound Fe7Se8. The crystals are grown using a modified Bridgman method and exist as a hexagonal NiAs-like structure with an ordered distribution of Fe vacancies that determine their magnetic properties. The substitution effect, inducing a systematic decrease in the unit-cell volume due to the ionic radii of doping ions being smaller than the radii of Fe2+ ions, is a source of chemical pressure, acting on the magnetic subsystem and determining the magnetic ordering temperature TC and the spin-reorientation temperature (TSRT). As the most important result of this paper, it was shown that hydrostatic and chemical pressures are strongly correlated in the investigated system. The character of magnetic phase transitions has been designated in the vicinity of TC and TSRT temperatures, and the magnetic entropy change ΔSm and refrigeration potential magnitudes have been determined for this temperature range. These magnetocaloric parameters were shown to depend strongly on chemical pressure. A phenomenological model developed based on the experimental measurements demonstrated that the magnetic properties of the system depend strongly on the crystal field acting on Fe2+ ions and the ratio of the numbers of Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions. Two-dimensional (2D) valleytronic materials are both fundamentally intriguing and practically appealing to explore novel physics and design next-generation devices. However, traditional control means such as optic pumping or magnetic field cannot meet the demands of modern electron devices for miniaturization, low-dissipation, and non-volatility. Thus, it is attractive to combine the ferroelectric property with valley property in a single compound. In this paper, the recent progress of ferroelectric-valley coupling is reviewed. First, we briefly recall the development of valleytronics in the past several years. Then, various structures demonstrating ferroelectric-valley coupling, including heterostructures and intrinsic materials, are introduced. Subsequently, we describe ferroelectric-valley coupling in sliding and adsorption system and the unconventional ferroelectricity in the moiré system. Finally, we discuss the research status and outlook. We hope that this perspective will be helpful to bridge the gap between valleytronics and ferroelectrics in 2D materials and inspire further exciting findings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we present structural, magnetic, magnetocaloric, and critical study of perovskite La0.7Ag0.2Bi0.1MnO3 (LABMO) nanocrystalline compound synthesized by the sol–gel method. Temperature dependent magnetization measurements reveal the significant suppression of ferromagnetism in the LABMO sample upon Bi-doping on a La-site. The downturn in inverse magnetic susceptibility (χ−1) observed just above TC (236 K) in the paramagnetic regime corroborates the presence of short-range ferromagnetic correlations, which is the characteristic of the Griffith like phase below 270 K. The deviation from linear paramagnetic behavior in χ−1 implies the strong Griffith singularity. Furthermore, we have employed an integrated Maxwell's thermodynamic relation numerically and used isothermal magnetization data to determine the change in magnetic entropy at various magnetic fields. For a magnetic field change of 5 T, the value of maximum magnetic entropy change is found to be ∼6 J kg−1 K−1. We have also explored the critical behavior of the LABMO sample at transition temperatures using different theoretical models. The value of exponents β, γ, and δ does not fall into any known universality class. Despite this, the scaling relations show that interactions are renormalized around the Curie temperature (TC). Based on the micro-domain theory, the macro-thermodynamic relationship, and the effective field theory, an improved nonlinear constitutive model is established for ferromagnetic materials. The constitutive model includes new expressions of some nonlinear functions and high-order nonlinear functions and has simple expressions for some ferromagnetic materials. Compared with the existing models, the nonlinear model established in this paper has a great improvement in the prediction accuracy of the magneto-elastic coupling behavior. In other words, it can accurately predict the complicated nonlinear behaviors of magnetostriction and magnetization under the magnetic field and applied stress. The experimental realization of topological semimetals in the past decade has brought them to the new frontier of condensed matter research. In this paper, we study the angle dependence of the magnetoresistance and planar Hall effect of type-II Dirac semimetal PtTe2 microflakes. The magnetotransport properties of a PtTe2 device are characterized at various temperatures (T = 10–300 K) and different magnetic fields (H = 1–9 T). Remarkable anisotropic magnetoresistance and planar Hall resistance are observed, which can be ascribed to the anisotropic orbital magnetoresistance. The structural and magnetic properties of the multicomponent R–Fe–H compounds with a high content of Fe and H are reported. The process of synthesis of the hydrides (R,R′)2Fe14BH5.5 [where R and R′ are light (Nd) and heavy (Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) rare earth metals, respectively] with a maximum hydrogen content is described in detail. The paper also provides insights into the synthesis of single-crystalline hydrides using the example of the R2(Fe,Co)14BH3 series. The hydrides (R,Nd)2Fe14BH5.5, R2(Fe,Co)14BH3, R2(Fe,Al)17H3 have a significantly increased volume as compared to the parent materials. High-field magnetization results of both parent and hydrogenated compounds at low temperatures are presented. Spin–reorientation phase transitions induced by an external magnetic field are observed. The parameter of the intersublattice exchange interaction and the influence of hydrogen on it are estimated within the framework of the mean field theory. We demonstrate a real-time, single-shot vector magnetic measurement technique using synchronous coherent population trapping (SCPT) in an apparatus consisting of a small rubidium vapor cell. Vector modality of our magnetometer is enabled by designing a feedback system based on performing a peak-lock on a particularly strong 2 Ω L magnetic resonance produced in the SCPT spectrum and compensating the external magnetic field via a three-axis field coil. With its current design, this magnetometer exhibits high sensitivities of approximately 155 , 129 , and 57 pT / Hz in measuring the magnetic field vector components along the (x,y,z) axes. Sensitivities closer to the shot-noise limit can be achieved in the future by reducing the technical noise of our equipment and by employing a differential detection and polarization rotation measurement scheme in our system. H−T phase diagrams for chromium oxide chloride (CrOCl) are usually obtained using data from the measurements of magnetization and specific heats. Recent works suggest that magnetic anisotropy exists in CrOCl. In this work, we use dynamic cantilever magnetometry, which is sensitive to both magnetization and magnetic anisotropy, to probe phase transitions in CrOCl flakes. Together with magnetization measurements from a Superconducting Quantum Interference Device, four major regions of the CrOCl H−T phase diagram along its c-axis are obtained, which is consistent with the previously reported works. Then, we studied magnetic field induced transitions in CrOCl flakes under four different temperatures. Several transitions in antiferromagnetic state and in incommensurate state, which have not been reported before, were recognized. We believe these transitions probably originate from magnetic anisotropy due to magnetoelastic coupling and lattice reconstruction in CrOCl. This study presents an approach to achieve a triaxial magnetic alignment through a linear drive type of modulated rotating magnetic field by using a permanent magnet array. This magnet array generates a modulated rotating magnetic field (MRF) without moving the sample and can produce an MRF of ∼ 0.8 T. By utilizing this magnet array, DyBa2Cu3Oy (Dy123, y ∼ 7) grains were biaxially aligned. After cutting the as-aligned sample that was magnetically aligned, we observed a location dependence of the orientation degree. We achieved the higher in-plane orientation degree of ∼ 8.5° and the c-axis orientation degree of ∼ 6.0°, respectively. The 3D simulation analysis played a key role in identifying the region where the uniformity of the MRF is within the magnet array. Compared to the epitaxial growth techniques, the use of the magnet array offers a cost-effective and versatile solution for achieving triaxial magnetic alignment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the thermal stability and performance of AlGaN/AlN/GaN Hall-effect sensors under industry-relevant atmospheric conditions. The thermal stability and performance of Hall sensors are evaluated by monitoring Hall sensitivity, two-dimensional electron gas density, and Ohmic contact resistance during aging at 200 °C for up to 2800 h under atmospheric conditions. This was accomplished by characterizing AlGaN/AlN/GaN micro-Hall sensors, with and without contacts, and before and after being placed under different thermal aging times. Observed electrical performance was correlated with the micro-structural evolution of AlGaN/AlN/GaN Hall sensor heterostructures. Results indicate that the AlGaN/AlN/GaN Hall sensor provides stable performance for as long as 2800 h aging at 200 °C without any significant degradation of (i) Hall sensitivity, (ii) two-dimensional electron gas, and (iii) Ohmic contacts. However, there was a small change in sheet density and mobility, which is due to a decrease in polarization, resulting from local inhomogeneous strain relief at the barrier layer. During the early stage of thermal aging, a decrease in contact resistance was also observed and attributed to (i) out-diffusion of "Ga" at the vicinity of the contact interface, and (ii) a reduction in oxygen concentration and formation of Al–Ti intermediate alloy at the GaN/Ti interface, resulting in a reduced barrier and enhanced electron transport at the contacts. However, despite these small changes, results indicate that the AlGaN/AlN/GaN Hall sensor provides stable performance for as long as 2800 h thermal aging at 200 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Magnetocaloric properties of TbCrO3 and TmCrO3 are reported and compared with those of the previously reported rare-earth chromites RCrO3 (R = Gd, Dy, Ho, and Er) and other perovskite-type oxides. The samples of TbCrO3 and TmCrO3 in this work were synthesized using a citrate gel combustion technique, and their magnetic properties were investigated and compared with those reported previously on RCrO3 (R = Gd, Dy, Ho, and Er). The Cr3+–Cr3+ ordering temperatures were found to strongly depend on the ionic radii of the rare-earth. By fitting the dc magnetization data with modified Curie–Weiss law including the Dzyaloshinsky–Moriya antisymmetric exchange interaction (D) and the symmetric exchange constant Je, spin canting angles (α) were obtained. In general, α was found to increase with the decreasing ionic radii of R3+ in RCrO3. The magnetocaloric properties investigated included the magnetic entropy change (−ΔS) for a given change in magnetic field (ΔH), the corresponding adiabatic temperature change (ΔTad), and their relative variations (ΔTad/ΔH) and (−ΔS/ΔH). It is observed that for RCrO3, (−ΔS) measured in the vicinity of the ordering temperature of R3+–R3+, varies almost as G2/3 where G is the de Gennes factor. Among RCrO3, GdCrO3 shows the largest value of (−ΔS/ΔH), because of its largest G factor and its magnitudes of (ΔTad/ΔH) and (−ΔS/ΔH) compare well with the reported values for the perovskites GdFeO3 and EuTiO3. The magnetic memory non-destructive testing method can evaluate the early damage such as stress concentration based on the magneto-mechanical effect. Some magneto-mechanical models have been proposed and applied to the mechanism explanation and theoretical analysis of this non-destructive testing method. The present work constitutes a continuing study in questing for a new magneto-mechanical model that is very concise, accurate, and easy to calculate. By introducing a new magnetostrictive expression with a concise and clear physical meaning, a new magneto-mechanical model is proposed under a constant weak magnetic field based on the thermodynamic framework and approach law. Particularly, compared with existing models, an analytical expression of anhysteresis magnetization is obtained for the first time under a constant weak magnetic field, which greatly facilitates the understanding and application of the magneto-mechanical effect. In comparison with the classic Jiles's model, the prediction accuracy is improved greatly based on the present model, particularly for the compression case. A detailed study has also been performed to reveal the effect of cyclic loading on the magneto-mechanical behavior. The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center has enabled widespread study of nanoscale nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy at low magnetic fields. NMR spectroscopy at high magnetic fields significantly improves the technique's spectral resolution, enabling clear identification of closely related chemical species. However, NV-detected NMR is typically performed using AC sensing through electron spin echo envelope modulation, a hyperfine spectroscopic technique that is not feasible at high magnetic fields. Within this paper, we have explored an NV-detected NMR technique for applications of high field NMR. We have demonstrated optically detected magnetic resonance with the NV Larmor frequency of 230 GHz at 8.3 T, corresponding to a proton NMR frequency of 350 MHz. We also demonstrated the first measurement of electron–electron double resonance detected NMR using the NV center and successfully detected 13 C nuclear bath spins. The described technique is limited by the longitudinal relaxation time (T 1), not the transverse relaxation time (T 2). Future applications of the method to perform nanoscale NMR of external spins at 8.3 T and even higher magnetic fields are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermal motion of charge carriers in a conducting object causes magnetic field noise that may interfere with sensitive measurements near the object. In this paper, we describe a method to compute the spectral properties of the thermal magnetic noise from arbitrarily shaped thin conducting objects. The method is based on modeling divergence-free currents on a conducting surface using a stream function and calculating the magnetically independent noise-current modes. By doing this, we obtain the power spectral density of the thermal magnetic noise as well as its spatial correlations and frequency dependence. We also describe a numerical implementation of the method and verify it against analytic formulas. We provide the implementation as a part of the free and open-source software package bfieldtools. Thermal switching by magnetic fields is one of the important functionalities in thermal management technologies. In low-temperature devices, superconducting states can be used as a magneto-thermal-switching (MTS) component because carrier thermal conductivity (κ) is strongly suppressed in superconducting states. Recently, we demonstrated that the MTS ratio (MTSR) of pure Nb reached 650% at a temperature (T) of 2.5 K under a magnetic field (H) of 4.0 kOe [Yoshida et al., Appl. Phys. Express 16, 033002 (2023)]. In this study, to enrich knowledge on MTS of superconductors, the MTSRs of pure Pb wires with 5 N and 3 N purities were investigated by measuring the temperature or magnetic-field dependences of κ. For 5N-Pb, a large MTSR exceeding 1000% was observed below 3.6 K under H > 600 Oe. Although higher MTSRs were expected at lower temperatures under H > 600 Oe, the obtained data under those conditions were accompanied by large errors due to magnetic-field-induced huge κ at low temperatures. In contrast, the κ for 3N-Pb was observed to be clearly lower than that for 5N-Pb. Although the magnetic-field-induced change in κ was small, the MTSR at T = 2.5 K was 300%. These results suggest that Pb is a promising material for low-temperature magneto-thermal switching because of wide-range κ tunable by magnetic field and purity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The magnetic field B induced along the axis of symmetry of axially magnetized cones was studied analytically and experimentally for various cone angles α. An explicit algebraic equation was derived for sharp-pointed and truncated cones. A sharp cone is characterized by singularities of B and ∇ B at its apex point. For a truncated cone, the maximum values of these quantities are achieved for α m a x ∼ 54.7 ° and α ∇ ∼ 39.2 ° , respectively. Two truncated cones with α u n i ∼ 63.4 ° positioned in a mirrored co-apex configuration produce a uniform axial field in the free-space gap. For smaller angles, the minimum field is located in the center of the airgap, while for larger, it is at the cones' surfaces with extremum at α m i n ∼ 71.6 °. These predictions were investigated using a tunable apparatus in which Co–Fe cones are magnetized by cylindrical NdFeB magnets. Strong ∼ 4 T B-field was achieved. Rotating plasma structures, or "spokes," in magnetized discharges characterized by perpendicular electric and magnetic fields have been seen in a growing number of studies and are believed to be the result of gradient-driven drift instabilities. Under certain conditions, we have shown [Ito and Cappelli, Appl. Phys. Lett. 94, 211501 (2009)] the spoke's rotation to be opposite to the E × B direction, i.e., retrograde in its expected direction. Recently [Marcovati et al., J. Appl. Phys. 127, 223301 (2020)], we have linked such counter-intuitive rotation to a local inversion of the electric field. Here, we give further experimental evidence for this inversion and attempt to provide an explanation for a relatively distinct transition seen between retrograde and positive (prograde) drift. In the experiments, a partially magnetized plasma forms inside a magnetron device of ≈ 10 mm radius operated with argon. Discharge current–voltage measurements are acquired for a range of argon fill pressure and inter-electrode spacing. We find two branches of operation—a low current branch of negative resistance, coinciding with the retrograde spoke rotation, and a higher current branch of positive resistance, coincident with prograde spoke rotation. We postulate that at low discharge currents, high magnetic field confinement leads to a large density gradient, causing more electron transport to the anode than that demanded by the external circuit. At higher currents, anomalous axial electron transport (across the magnetic field lines) becomes dominant, eliminating the conditions for field inversion. The current thresholds for the field inversion are found to be sensitive to the argon pressure and inter-electrode spacing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An experimental study on the role of an external longitudinal magnetic field on the characteristics changes of pulsed plasma stream, produced in argon medium, is carried out at different time spans of its evolution. The spectroscopic observations are time integrated and are carried out at different times of plasma formation for pulsed discharge. This study gives insights into the recombination and diffusion phase of the plasma species in the presence of the magnetic field. The transition of plasma species from a dominant recombination phase to a diffusional phase is well revealed by the density profile during the time evolution. Moreover, the decrease in electron temperature and the increase in electron excitation temperature explain the energy transfer to electrons due to metastable quenching, and the system gradually approaches equilibrium. The magnetic field also affects the transitions of the ionized argon population between different energy levels. It is found that faster decay occurs for transitions of different plasma species to non-metastable states, while the populations of metastable states exist for a longer time. In addition, the time-resolved morphology changes of the plasma stream are also observed by high speed imaging, which shows the flow structure of the plasma stream at different time frames. The imaging of the plasma stream evolution shows the initial ejection of the plasma sheet from the electrode assembly, its detachment, the steady flow, and gradually its nature of dying out. A theoretical method is described to analytically calculate a pair of surface current densities, which produce a desired static magnetic field in one region of the space and zero magnetic field in another. The analysis is based on the known relationship between a surface current density and a stream function, the equivalence of stream functions and surface magnetic dipole density, and the scalar potential representation of the associated magnetic field in free space. From these relations, we formulate the magnetostatic problem, which is often treated as a vector field problem, as a scalar field problem in which a two-dimensional scalar field (stream function) is related to a three-dimensional one (magnetic scalar potential) via the differentiation of the electrostatic Green's function 1/|r–rs|. It is shown that, in a coordinate system in which a separated form of the Green's function exists (separable coordinate system), there exists a simple relationship between a harmonic component of a stream function and a harmonic component of the magnetic scalar potential. The method is applied to calculate idealized surface current patterns for actively shielded, linear gradient field coils in the Cartesian, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates. In this study, we present a novel method for measuring the magnetic susceptibility of liquids using a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. The proposed technique employs a ring magnet to deform the liquid, while a laser beam passes through the liquid to measure the resulting interference pattern. The deformation of the liquid, caused by the known magnetic field of the ring magnet, is used to calculate the magnetic susceptibility. We provide a comprehensive theoretical framework, including the relevant equations and models, for analyzing the data obtained using this method. We compare the Mach–Zehnder interferometer method with other established techniques, highlighting its advantages and disadvantages. Our findings indicate that the Mach–Zehnder interferometer technique offers high accuracy, sensitivity, and potential applications in characterizing the magnetic properties of various liquid systems. With the development of high spatial resolution spin image and magnetic field distribution measurement in atomic vapor cell, one can localize the position and calculate the magnetic moment of the field source around the cell. However, traditional cubic or spherical vapor cell can only measure the magnetic field distribution on one side of the field source, which limits the precision of the field inversion results. Here, we use a recessed atomic vapor cell to obtain field distribution around the source, which is positioned at the center of the cell. The magnetic field distributions around five sides of the field source are measured using movable stages and digital micro-mirror device. We combine the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm with a genetic algorithm as the magnetic source localization algorithm to realize a quick global search as well as a precise local extreme point search. We obtain a spatial resolution of 219.2 × 387.0 × 451.5 μ m 3 and a magnetic field sensitivity of 0.06 nT / Hz 1 / 2 in a volume pixel of 0.0383 mm 3. The error in the localization of the magnetic source is 1.295 mm in the x direction, 185 μ m in the y direction, and 40 μ m in the z direction. The field distribution measurement method using recessed atomic vapor cell and related inversion algorithm demonstrated here have great potential applications in small scale field source detection of biology and materials science. Geometrically frustrated kagome materials reveal many novel states of matter ranging from quantum spin liquids to multiferroics. Herein, we study the compound CaFe3O(PO4)3, which has a quasi-two-dimensional lattice of Fe3+ ions with spin S = 5/2. Electrical and magnetic properties have been investigated on polycrystalline specimens of CaFe3O(PO4)3 using magnetization, pyroelectric, and magnetoelectric current measurements. The system undergoes a weak ferromagnetic-type ordering at TC1 ∼ 19.5 K, followed by another transition at TC2 ∼ 9 K. While no ferroelectric polarization (P) is observed at a zero magnetic field (H), the applied H induces P below TC2. At the temperature of 2.5 K, P starts to increase above H of 1 T, shows a maximum value at 3.15 T, and then decreases at higher H regions. The observed results suggest that CaFe3O(PO4)3 should be a magnetic-field-induced ferroelectric compound with frustrated magnetic couplings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Stoner–Wohlfarth model is a classical model for magnetic hysteresis of single-domain magnets. For two-dimensional (2D) magnets at finite temperatures, the Stoner–Wohlfarth model must be extended to include intrinsic strong spin fluctuations. We predict several fundamentally different hysteresis properties between 2D and 3D magnets. The magnetization switching diagram known as the astroid figure in the conventional Stoner–Wohlfarth model becomes highly temperature dependent and asymmetric with respect to the transverse and longitudinal magnetic fields. A giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensor with a Wheatstone bridge structure and an out-of-plane linear response was developed. The spin-valve structure consists of a synthetic antiferromagnetic [(Co/Pt)n/Ru/(Pt/Co)n] reference layer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, a Cu spacer layer, and a Co-free layer with in-plane easy magnetization. By utilizing the spin–orbit torque induced magnetization switching in the synthetic antiferromagnetic layer, the magnetization of the reference layers in the adjacent bridge arms is set to the opposite direction, achieving a GMR sensor with a full Wheatstone bridge structure. The sensor exhibits linear response to the out-of-plane magnetic field with adjustable dynamic ranges from hundreds to thousands of Oe, depending on the thickness of the Co-free layer. A similar Wheatstone bridge sensor consisting of magnetic tunnel junctions was also proposed. Performing propagating spin-wave spectroscopy of thin films at millikelvin temperatures is the next step toward the realization of large-scale integrated magnonic circuits for quantum applications. Here, we demonstrate spin-wave propagation in a 100 nm -thick yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) film at temperatures down to 45 mK , using stripline nanoantennas deposited on YIG surface for electrical excitation and detection. The clear transmission characteristics over the distance of 10 μ m are measured and the extracted spin-wave group velocity and the YIG saturation magnetization agree well with the theoretical values. We show that the gadolinium-gallium-garnet (GGG) substrate influences the spin-wave propagation characteristics only for the applied magnetic fields beyond 75 mT , originating from a GGG magnetization up to 62 kA / m at 45 mK. Our results show that the developed fabrication and measurement methodologies enable the realization of integrated magnonic quantum nanotechnologies at millikelvin temperatures. Deterministic spin orbit torque (SOT) magnetization switching of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy structures requires an external magnetic field, which is unsuitable for on-chip applications. Various approaches are there to debar the external magnetic field requirement. In this work, we use static stress, which can generate a virtual magnetic field via magnetoelastic coupling. We show that this field can be used for deterministic magnetization switching. In our simulations, we use an antiferromagnetic material for generating the SOT and exchange bias field and avail the benefits of the field like torque (FLT). With the exclusion of thermal noise, this reduces the threshold current density from 114 to 36 MA/cm2, thus mitigating the energy dissipation by more than nine times. To study the effect of thermal noise, we simulate 500 trajectories and find out the switching probability. We perform simulations to study the effects of current density, stress, pulse width, and FLT on the switching probability in great details. Our simulation results show that we can get sub-ns switching with a probability of 0.99 requiring only 45.5 fJ of energy dissipation. By employing a two-dimensional linearized magnetoquantum hydrodynamic model and Maxwell's equations, the electron exchange effect on the dispersion spectrum of surface magneto-plasmon polaritons (SMPPs) is studied in a perpendicular configurated graphene-plasmonic structure where a graphene sheet is directly covered by two semi-infinite dielectrics. Besides, other influences (including the graphene electron density, the dielectric constant of the dielectric medium, and the external magnetic field) on dispersion characteristics in both classical and quantum regimes of graphene surface magneto plasmon polaritons (GSMPPs) have been investigated in the presence of an electron exchange effect. Our results show that these influences greatly affect the dynamics of GSMPPs. Also, it is found that in the presence of the electron exchange effect, the propagation speed and the dispersion spectrum shift of GSMPPs in the classical regime are largely increased more than those in the case of the quantum regime. Our findings demonstrate that the electron exchange effect has a vital function in the modulation of the dynamical behavior of SMPPs in graphene-nano optical and plasmonic devices. For the application of vortex electromagnetic (EM) beams in practical detection scenes, the scattering characteristics of electrically large arbitrarily shaped targets illuminated by an off-axis Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) vortex beam are investigated and compared to the on-axis incidence case. The vector potential method is used to extract the electric and magnetic field components of the LG beam in different polarization states. The physical optics algorithm is adopted to calculate the scattering fields of four typical targets with the shape of a sphere, NASA almond, blunt cone, and blade model. The results revealed that as the beam center offset and the topological charge of the incident vortex beam increase, the scattering field distorts, and the obvious orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum mixing occurs. In addition, OAM spectrum aliasing occurs for asymmetric targets, even at on-axis incidence. These results elucidate the mechanism of vortex EM scattering and provide a reference for applying vortex beams for target detection and recognition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Partially magnetized low-temperature plasmas (LTP) in an E × B configuration, where the applied magnetic field is perpendicular to the self-consistent electric field, have become increasingly relevant in industrial applications. Hall thrusters, a type of electrostatic plasma propulsion, are one of the main LTP technologies whose advancement is hindered by the not-fully-understood underlying physics of operation, particularly, with respect to the plasma instabilities and the associated electron cross field transport. The development of Hall thrusters with unconventional magnetic field topologies has imposed further questions regarding the instabilities' characteristics and the electrons' dynamics in these modern cross field configurations. Accordingly, we present in this effort a detailed parametric study of the influence of three factors on the plasma processes in the radial-azimuthal coordinates of a Hall thruster, namely, the magnetic field gradient, secondary electron emission, and plasma number density. The studies are carried out using the reduced-order particle-in-cell code developed by the authors. The setup of the radial-azimuthal simulations largely follows a well-defined benchmark case from the literature in which the magnetic field is oriented along the radius, and a constant axial electric field is applied perpendicular to the simulation plane. The salient finding from our investigations is that, in the studied cases corresponding to elevated plasma densities, a long-wavelength azimuthal mode with the frequency of about 1 MHz is developed. Moreover, in the presence of strong magnetic field gradients, this mode results from an inverse energy cascade and induces a significant electron cross field transport as well as a notable heating of the ions. A circular waveguide electron cyclotron resonance plasma thruster prototype driven by microwaves at 5.8 GHz (80–300 W) is characterized. The magnetic field is generated by a combination of Sm-CoYXG32 magnets and an electromagnet, which enables the tuning of the resonance position and magnetic nozzle shape. The main plasma plume properties are analyzed by using electrostatic probes when the mass flow rate (Xenon), microwave power, electromagnet current, and propellant injector design are varied. An estimation of the propulsive performance of the device is also presented. Results show that a single radial injector hole is not sufficient for a symmetric ion current profile and that magnetic nozzle shape and strength tuning can significantly affect the divergence angle and thruster floating potential. A utilization efficiency of up to 70% and electron temperatures of up to 16 eV have been measured. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
