Simple Summary: The dietary preferences for pet cats have been a topic of debate, with extruded dry food, cooked meat, and raw meat being the primary contenders. This study aimed to compare the effects of these three diets on growth performance, blood parameters, fecal scores, and fecal microbiota composition in purebred Ragdoll cats (n = 5/group). These data, to some extent, suggest that CM is the most suitable diet for Ragdoll cats, but further research on intestine microbiota is still needed. Our study result provides valuable insights for purebred pet cat breeding. Our study aimed to evaluate the effects of feeding Ragdoll cats (n = 5/group) extruded dry food (ED), cooked meat (CM), and raw meat (RM) on their growth performance, apparent digestibility, fur condition, blood parameters, fecal scores, and gut microbiota composition. However, our results indicate that different types of diets did not significantly affect the daily weight gain of Ragdoll cats. The CM group showed a significant improvement in the digestibility of dry matter, fat and protein compared to the ED group (p < 0.05) but no improvement in that of fat compared to the RM group. Compared to the ED group, both the CM and RM groups showed significant improvements in fur condition while exhibiting a significant decrease in fecal scores (p < 0.05). The CM and RM groups exhibited enhanced serum antioxidant capacity (p < 0.05) and increased immunity in the cats (p < 0.05). Immunity enhancement in the CM group was significantly higher than that in the RM group(p < 0.05). The ED group showed an increase in the abundance of beneficial bacteria in Ragdoll cat intestines, while the CM and RM groups showed enhancements in the innate microbiota of feline animals. These data, to some extent, suggest that CM is the most suitable diet for Ragdoll cats, but further research on intestine microbiota is still needed. Simple Summary: Tibetan yellow cattle and dzo are important meat sources for people living on the Tibetan Plateau. As a hybrid offspring of Tibetan yellow cattle and yaks, dzo inherit the advantages of their parent generations. However, the differences in the blood metabolites and ecological adaptability of Tibetan yellow cattle and dzo remain unclear. In this study, we have explored the potential difference in environmental adaptability between these two breeds of animals by analyzing their blood-based physiological and biochemical parameters, serum metabolites, and fecal microorganisms. The results revealed that dzo showed better adaptation to the high-altitude and low-temperature environment of the Tibetan Plateau, as compared to Tibetan yellow cattle. This study provides a basis for understanding the adaptive mechanism of dzo in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. This study aimed to investigate the differences in environmental adaptability between dzo and Tibetan yellow cattle by using corresponding assay kits to analyze blood indices, utilizing mass spectrometry for blood metabolite profiling, and performing 16S rDNA sequencing of fecal microbiota. Forty female cattle were randomly divided into a dzomo (female dzo) group (MG, n = 20) and a Tibetan-yellow-cattle group (HG, n = 20). After 150 days of uniform feeding, six cattle from each group were randomly picked for jugular blood sampling and collection of fecal microorganisms. The results showed that the serum albumin, creatinine, total protein, superoxide dismutase, IgG, and IgM concentrations in the MG group were higher (p < 0.05), whereas the serum triglyceride concentration was lower, compared to the HG group (p < 0.05). The higher level of phospholipids containing long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) (PC (18:5e/2:0), PC (20:5e/2:0), LPC 18:2, LPC 20:5) observed in the serum of the dzo suggests that they have an advantage in adapting to the challenging conditions of the plateau environment. The fecal microbiota analysis showed that Akkermansia was significantly enriched in the MG group; this might be the key bacterial genus leading to the strong adaptability of dzo. Simple Summary: Weaning is a critical and challenging period for piglets, often leading to stress, poor growth, and increased disease incidence. This study investigated using octapeptin as a feed additive for weaned piglets. The results indicated that octapeptin significantly improved diarrhea and enhanced feed conversion ratio by modulating immunity and reducing inflammation compared to standard diets. Octapeptin also decreased TNF-α levels, boosted the immune system, and increased beneficial bacteria, such as Collinsella and Olsenella, positively impacted gut health. These findings suggested that octapeptin is a promising, safe, natural antibiotic alternative that promotes health and growth in weaned piglets. With the prohibition of antibiotics in animal feed, the livestock industry faces significant challenges, including increased morbidity and mortality rates and reduced farming efficiency. This study evaluated the effects of octapeptin as a feed additive on growth performance, diarrhea incidence, serum biochemistry, serum immune factors, and gut microbiota of weaned piglets. Seventy-two weaned piglets were randomly assigned to three groups based on body weight and sex, with each group receiving different dietary treatments: a negative control group (CON, basal diet), a positive control group (MC, basal diet + 5 mg/kg Microcin C7), and an octapeptin supplement group (OP, basal diet + 40 mg/kg octapeptin). After 28 days of feeding experimental diets, the results demonstrated that supplementing the diet of weaned piglets with octapeptin significantly improved the feed conversion ratio compared to the control group (p < 0.05) over the entire experimental period. Furthermore, a reduction in diarrhea incidence was observed during the late nursery period (14–28 d), resulting in an overall improvement in diarrhea compared to the other two groups (p < 0.01). Serum biochemical analysis results revealed a trend towards decreased alanine aminotransferase level in the octapeptin group, with no significant differences in other indicators, suggesting potential improvements in liver function without causing liver damage. In addition, compared to the control group, octapeptin enhanced mucosal immunity by decreasing TNF-α level (p < 0.05). Fecal microbiota analysis results showed a significant increase in beneficial bacteria such as Collinsella and Olsenella in the octapeptin group compared to the other two groups (p < 0.05), indicating a positive impact on gut health. Diarrhea is a common issue in domestic yaks (Bos grunniens) that can occur with pasture alterations and significantly impacts growth performance. Previous research has examined the microbiota of diarrhetic yaks; however, the structural changes in gut bacterial community and microbial interactions in yaks with grassland alteration-induced diarrhea remain poorly understood. To explore variations in gut microbiota homeostasis among yaks suffering from diarrhea, fecal microbiota diversity and composition were analyzed using 16 S rRNA amplicon sequencing. Gut fecal microbiota diversity was lower in diarrhetic yaks than in non-diarrhetic yaks. Furthermore, the bacterial community composition (including that of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria) in the feces of diarrhetic yaks displayed significant alterations. Co-occurrence network analysis further underscored the compromised intestinal flora stability in yaks with diarrhea relative to that in non-diarrhetic yaks. Interestingly, the abundance of beneficial bacteria, such as Lachnospiraceae_AC2044_group and Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group, were decreased in yaks with diarrhea, and the reductions were negatively correlated with the fecal water content. Simple Summary: Diet significantly influences feline intestinal health, and abrupt dietary changes can disrupt the gastrointestinal balance. Incorporating functional additives, like heat-treated Bifidobacterium longum CECT-7384 combined with Fibersol-2, may ameliorate feline gastrointestinal functionality. Heat-treated Bifidobacterium longum exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and intestinal barrier-enhancing properties. Fibersol-2, widely employed in human foods, enhances colonic mucosal barrier function and increases intestinal microbiota diversity. In this study, we investigated the effects of providing or not providing heat-treated Bifidobacterium longum CECT-7384 combined with Fibersol-2 on intestinal barrier integrity, intestinal inflammation, and intestinal microbiota composition in cats undergoing abrupt dietary change. Our study demonstrates that supplementing heat-treated Bifidobacterium longum CECT-7384 combined with Fibersol-2 improved the intestinal health of adult cats subjected to abrupt dietary change. Abrupt dietary change can disrupt the intestinal balance in felines. This study aimed to assess the impact of heat-treated Bifidobacterium longum CECT-7384 combined with Fibersol-2 on the intestinal health of adult cats before and after dietary change. We selected 24 British shorthair cats, dividing them into two groups. From day 1 to day 14, the control group received a lower protein (33%) concentration (LPF) diet, while the treated group received the same LPF diet supplemented with 0.16% functional additives, consisting of Bifidobacterium longum CECT-7384 combined with Fibersol-2. Subsequently, from day 15 to day 28, the control group transitioned to a higher protein (40%) concentration (HPF) diet, while the treated group received the same HPF diet supplemented with 0.16% functional additives. Blood and fresh feces were collected on day 0, 14, 17, 21, and 28 of the experiment. The results suggest that the use of heat-treated Bifidobacterium longum CECT-7384 combined with Fibersol-2 may improve gastrointestinal function in cats by reducing serum LPS levels and fecal pH, while increasing fecal sIgA levels. In addition, the functional additive regulates the fecal microbiota and its function, promoting intestinal homeostasis and colonization with beneficial bacteria such as Blautia. Furthermore, on day 28, there was a significant difference in fecal microbiota beta diversity between the two groups. Recent research indicates that the microbiome has a significant impact on the progression of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and that creating therapies that change its composition could positively impact the outcomes of IBD treatment. This review summarizes the results of extensive studies that examined IBD patients undergoing several therapies, including anti-TNF medication, vedolizumab, ustekinumab, probiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), and the alterations in their gut microbiota's composition and function. The objective was to investigate the variety and effectiveness of microbial species in order to discover new biomarkers or therapeutic targets that could improve the outcome of treatment for these patients. This research aimed to offer useful insights into personalized medicine techniques for managing IBD. Beneficial bacteria such as Faecalibacterium prausnitzii and Roseburia have been consistently linked to favorable clinical outcomes, whereas pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Clostridioides difficile are associated with worsening disease conditions. Although many studies have examined the role of gut microbiota in IBD, there is still a need for more targeted research on the connection between specific microbial communities and treatment outcomes. Purpose To review the composition, preparation, proposed mechanism of action, safety, efficacy, and current place in therapy of Rebyota (fecal microbiota, live-jslm). Summary As the first agent in a new class of drugs, live biotherapeutic products (LBPs), fecal microbiota, live-jslm offers another therapeutic approach for the prevention of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI). LBPs are given following antibiotic therapy for C. difficile to reintroduce certain bacteria present in the normal microbiome, as a means to reconstitute the microbiome of infected individuals. This review provides a summary of phase 2 and 3 clinical trials, product information, discussion of data limitations, and recommendations for place in therapy. High efficacy rates compared to placebo with sustained response up to 24 months after administration have been reported. The majority of adverse events identified were mild to moderate without significant safety signals. Conclusion Fecal microbiota, live-jslm has consistently been shown in randomized trials to be safe and effective in reducing rCDI. Background: The guts of mammals are home to trillions of microbes, forming a complex and dynamic ecosystem. Gut microbiota is an important biological barrier for maintaining immune homeostasis. Recently, the use of antibiotics to clear gut microbiota has gained popularity as a low cost and easy-to-use alternative to germ-free animals. However, the effect of the duration of the antibiotic cocktail on the gut microbiome is unclear, and more importantly, the effect of dramatic changes in the gut microbiota on intestinal tissue morphology and local immune response is rarely reported. Results: We observed a significant reduction in fecal microbiota species and abundance after 1 week of exposure to an antibiotic cocktail, gavage twice daily by intragastric administration. In terms of composition, Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were replaced by Proteobacteria. Extending antibiotic exposure to 2–3 weeks did not significantly improve the overall efficiency of microbiotal consumption. No significant histomorphological changes were observed in the first 2 weeks of antibiotic cocktail exposure, but the expression of inflammatory mediators in intestinal tissue was increased after 3 weeks of antibiotic cocktail exposure. Mendelian randomization analysis showed that Actinobacteria had a significant causal association with the increase of IL-1β (OR = 1.65, 95% CI = 1.23 to 2.21, P = 0.007) and TNF-α (OR = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.26 to 2.61, P = 0.001). We have previously identified increased levels of distinct bacterial taxa within mucosal biopsies from colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Following prior research, the aim of this study was to investigate the detection of the same CRC‐associated bacteria in fecal samples and to evaluate the suitability of fecal samples as a non‐invasive material for the detection of CRC‐associated bacteria. Next‐generation sequencing (NGS) of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) V4 region was performed to evaluate the detection of the CRC‐associated bacteria in the fecal microbiota of cancer patients, patients with adenomatous polyp and healthy controls. Furthermore, 19 novel species‐specific quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays were established to detect the CRC‐associated bacteria. Approximately, 75% of the bacterial taxa identified in biopsies were reflected in fecal samples. NGS failed to detect low‐abundance CRC‐associated taxa in fecal samples, whereas qPCR exhibited high sensitivity and specificity in identifying all targeted taxa. Comparison of fecal microbial composition between the different patient groups showed enrichment of Fusobacterium nucleatum, Parvimonas micra, and Gemella morbillorum in cancer patients. Background: Gastrointestinal transit (GIT) is influenced by factors including diet, medications, genetics, and gut microbiota, with slow GIT potentially indicating a functional disorder linked to conditions, such as constipation. Although GIT studies have utilized various animal models, few effectively model spontaneous slow GIT. Aims: We aimed to characterize the GIT phenotype of CFP/Yit (CFP), an inbred mouse strain with suggested slow GIT. Methods: Female and male CFP mice were compared to Crl:CD1 (ICR) mice in GIT and assessed based on oral gavage of fluorescent-labeled 70-kDa dextran, feed intake, fecal amount, and fecal water content. Histopathological analysis of the colon and analysis of gut microbiota were conducted. Results: CFP mice exhibited a shorter small intestine and a 1.4-fold longer colon compared to ICR mice. The median whole-GIT time was 6.0-fold longer in CFP mice than in ICR mice. CFP mice demonstrated slower gastric and cecal transits than ICR mice, with a median colonic transit time of 4.1 h (2.9-fold longer). CFP mice exhibited lower daily feed intakes and fecal amounts. Fecal water content was lower in CFP mice, apparently attributed to the longer colon. Histopathological analysis showed no changes in CFP mice, including tumors or inflammation. Moreover, CFP mice had a higher Firmicutes/Bacteroidota ratio and a relative abundance of Erysipelotrichaceae in cecal and fecal contents. Conclusions: This study indicates that CFP mice exhibit slow transit in the stomach, cecum, and colon. This study investigated how Clostridium butyricum affected rumen fermentation and the microbial communities of rumen and feces in beef cattle. Twenty beef cattle were divided into two groups: the control group (CK) and the C. butyricum group (CB, fed 2.5 x 108 CFU/kg of dry matter intake per day). The results showed that C. butyricum increased rumen pH, ammonia-N concentration, and microbial crude protein (MCP) concentration (P<0.05). Ruminal propionate and butyrate concentration increased, while the ruminal acetate to propionate ratio decreased (P <0.05). For rumen microbiota, observed species, Chao 1, and ACE indices were higher (P<0.05) with supplemented C. butyricum. At the phyla level, the C. butyricum enhanced the proportion of Firmicutes and decreased Bacteroidota (P<0.01). Christensenellaceae R-7 group, Methanobrevibacter, Oscillospiraceae NK4A214 group, Desulfovibrio, Streptococcus, and C. butyricum were increased (P<0.05) at the genus and species levels in the CB group. The proportion of Prevotella, Christensenellaceae R-7 group, Blautia, and Megasphaera elsdenii increased, while Escherichia coli decreased (P<0.05) in feces. E. coli and Salmonella populations were significantly reduced (P<0.01). These results indicated that diets supplemented with C. butyricum could improve rumen fermentation by increasing the diversity and altering the microbial community structure of the rumen. Intestinal dysbacteriosis has frequently been involved in the context of depression. Nonetheless, only scant information is available about the features and functional changes of gut microbiota in female middle-aged depression (MAD). This study aims to explore whether there are characteristic changes in the gut microbes of female MAD and whether these changes are associated with depressive-like behaviors. Meanwhile, this study observed alterations in the lipid metabolism function of gut microbes and further examined changes in plasma medium- and long-chain fatty acids (MLCFAs) in mice that underwent fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Stool samples obtained from 31 MAD, along with 24 healthy individuals (HC) were analyzed by 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. Meanwhile, 14-month-old female C57BL/6J mice received antibiotic cocktails and then oral gavage of the microbiota suspension of MAD or HC for 3 weeks to reconstruct gut microbiota. The subsequent depressive-like behaviors, the composition of gut microbiota, as well as MLCFAs in the plasma were evaluated. A noteworthy disruption in gut microbial composition in MAD individuals compared to HC was observed. Several distinct bacterial taxa, including Dorea , Butyricicoccus , and Blautia , demonstrated associations with the demographic variables. A particular microbial panel encompassing 49 genera effectively differentiated MAD patients from HC (AUC = 0.82). Fecal microbiome transplantation from MAD subjects led to depressive-like behaviors and dysfunction of plasma MLCFAs in mice. These findings suggest that microbial dysbiosis is linked to the pathogenesis of MAD, and its role may be associated with the regulation of MLCFAs metabolism. 【Objective】The study aimed to explore the effects of Enterococcus faecium extracellular vesicles (EfmEV) on growth performance, immunity, intestinal morphology and fecal microbiota in mice, providing theoretical basis for the application of E. faecium as a microbial feed additive in animal production.【Method】A total of 20 male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into control group and experimental group with 10 replicates per group and 1 mouse per replicate. The experiment lasted for 5 days. Mice in the experimental group were given 500 μg Efm-EV suspension every other day by intragastric administration, with 150 μL for each mouse, and mice in the control group were given the same volume of PBS. Daily feed intake, and body weight at the beginning and end of the experiment of each mouse were recorded, average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed/gain (F/G) of mice were calculated accordingly.【Result】Compared with the PBS treatment group, no significant change was observed in the final body weight (FBW), ADG, ADFI and F/G of mice in the Efm-EV treatment group. The serum immunoglobulin A (IgA) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels in the Efm-EV group were significantly decreased compared with those in PBS treatment group (P ＜ 0.05), while the serum interleukin-10 (IL10) level was significantly increased (P ＜ 0.05), and there was no significant difference in serum tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) level. Compared with the PBS treatment, Efm-EV treatment significantly increased duodenal villus height/crypt depth ratio (VH/CD) (P ＜ 0.05). There were no significant changes in villus height (VH), crypt depth (CD) of duodenum, and VH, CD and VH/CD of jejunum and ileum. Background: Intestinal botulism is primarily reported in small babies as a condition known as infant botulism. The condition results from the ingestion of environmental or foodborne spores of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) producing Clostridia, usually Clostridium botulinum, and subsequent spore germination into active botulinum neurotoxinogenic cultures in the gut. It is generally considered that small babies are susceptible to C. botulinum colonization because of their immature gut microbiota. Yet, it is poorly understood which host factors contribute to the clinical outcome of intestinal botulism. We previously reported a case of infant botulism where the infant recovered clinically in six weeks but continued to secrete C. botulinum cells and/or BoNT in the feces for seven months. Case presentation: To further understand the microbial ecology behind this exceptionally long-lasting botulinum neurotoxinogenic colonization, we characterized the infant fecal microbiota using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing over the course of disease and recovery. C. botulinum could be detected in the infant fecal samples at low levels through the acute phase of the disease and three months after recovery. Overall, we observed a temporal delay in the maturation of the infant fecal microbiota associated with a persistently high-level bifidobacterial population and a low level of Lachnospiraceae, Bacteroidaceae and Ruminococcaceae compared to healthy infants over time. Conclusion: This study brings novel insights into the infant fecal composition associated with intestinal botulism and provides a basis for a more systematic analysis of the gut microbiota of infants diagnosed with botulism. Microbial diversity in the fecal samples of Bactrian camels in Transbaikalia under various grazing management (free grazing (group I), mixed (group II), and stall housing (group III)) was revealed using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene variable regions. The microbial community of the fecal microbiota was found to be diverse and to depend on the camel grazing management. The most common phyla of the camel fecal microbiota were Bacillota and Bacteroidota. The phylum Verrucomicrobiota was a codominant in the fecal microbiota of groups I and II of animals, and Actinomycetota, in the feces of camels of group III. Changes in the fecal microbiota structure and taxonomic diversity occurred as camel grazing management and feeding conditions changed. Free grazing resulted in high diversity of the prokaryotic community in the fecal microbiota. In addition, differences in taxonomic composition depending on sex were found, which were in the abundance of taxa rather than in their presence or absence. The results contribute to the current understanding of the fecal microbiota of camels under different management conditions and provide evidence of the influence of nutrition on the fecal microbiota under different management conditions. Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) poses a significant healthcare challenge, accounting for nearly 6.1% of global cancer cases. Early detection, facilitated by population screening utilizing innovative biomarkers, is pivotal for mitigating CRC incidence. This study aims to scrutinize the fecal and salivary microbiomes of CRC-positive individuals (CPs) in comparison to CRC-negative counterparts (CNs) to enhance early CRC diagnosis through microbial biomarkers. Material and methods: A total of 80 oral and stool samples were collected from Taleghani Hospital, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran, encompassing both CPs and CNs undergoing screening. Microbial profiling was conducted using 16S rRNA sequencing assays, employing the Nextera XT Index Kit on an Illumina NovaSeq platform. Calf diarrhea, a common disease mainly induced by Escherichia coli infection, is one of the main reasons for nonpredator losses. Hence, an effective nonantibacterial approach to prevent calf diarrhea has become an emerging requirement. This study evaluated the microalgae Schizochytrium sp. (SZ) and lactoferrin (LF) as a nutrient intervention approach against E. coli O101:K99-induced preweaning calve diarrhea. Fifty 1-d-old male Holstein calves were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 10): (1) control, (2) blank (no supplement or challenge), (3) 1 g/d LF, (4) 20 g/d SZ, or (5) 1 g/d LF plus 20 g/d SZ (LFSZ). The experimental period lasted 14 d. On the morning of d 7, calves were challenged with 1 × 1011 cfu of E. coli O101:K99, and rectum feces were collected on 3, 12, 24, and 168 h postchallenge for the control, LF, SZ, and LFSZ groups. The rectal feces of the blank group were collected on d 14. Data were analyzed using the mixed procedure of SAS (version 9.4; SAS Institute Inc.). The E. coli K99 challenge decreased the average daily gain (ADG) and increased feed-to-gain ratio (F:G) and diarrhea frequency (control vs. blank). Compared with the control group, the LFSZ group had a higher ADG and lower F:G, and the LFSZ and SZ groups had lower diarrhea frequency compared with the control group. In addition, the LFSZ and SZ groups have no differences in diarrhea frequency compared with the blank group. Compared with the control group, the blank group had lower serum nitric oxide (NO), endothelin-1, d -lactic acid (D-LA), and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) concentrations, as well as serum IgG, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α levels on d 7 and 14. On d 7, compared with the control group, all treatment groups had lower serum NO level, the SZ group had a lower serum D-LA concentration, and the LF and LFSZ groups had lower serum LPS concentration. On d 14, compared with the control group, the fecal microbiota of the blank group had lower Shannon, Simpson, Chao1, and ACE indexes, the LFSZ group had lower Shannon and Simpson indexes, the SZ and LFSZ groups had a higher Chao1 index, and all treatment groups had a higher ACE index. In fecal microbiota, Bifidobacterium and Actinobacteria were negatively associated with IL-10 and d -lactate, while Akkermansia was negatively associated with endothelin-1 and positively correlated with LPS, fecal scores, and d -lactate levels. Human gut microbiome richness, diversity, and composition are associated with physical activity and impaired glycemic control; however, the associations with sedentary behavior and screen time are not as well-established. This study evaluated associations of sedentary behavior and screen time with the alpha diversity and composition of the human gut microbiome in adults with and without impaired glycemic control. Sedentary behavior and screen time data were collected via survey from 47 adults (38% with impaired glycemic control). Microbiome composition and alpha diversity were determined in fecal microbial DNA. Sedentary behavior was negatively associated with the number of observed operational taxonomic units (OTUs), Chao 1 Index, and Fisher's Alpha Index. These associations were slightly attenuated but remained significant when controlling for covariates. Screen time was negatively associated with the number of observed OTUs, Shannon Index, and Fisher's Alpha Index; however, only the association with observed OTUs was independent of all covariates. Our findings suggest sedentary behavior and screen time may be significant influencers of compositional changes in human gut microbiota. Studies on the gut microbiome of free-living reptiles in Europe are generally fragmentary and still missing in Bulgaria. We aimed to identify and compare the fecal microbiota profiles of five syntopic lizard species from three families: the European green lizard (Lacerta viridis), the common wall lizard (Podarcis muralis), the meadow lizard (Darevskia praticola) (Lacertidae), the European snake-eyed skink (Ablepharus kitaibelii) (Scincidae), and the European slow worm (Anguis fragilis) (Anguidae), which coinhabit a low mountainous area in the western part of the country. A high-throughput sequencing of the hypervariable V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene, performed on the Illumina HiSeq2500 platform, was used. The core microbiota of lizard hosts seems to be species-specific. A dynamic phyla proportion between hosts was found. The richest alpha diversity was observed in D. praticola, and the lowest alpha diversity was observed in P. muralis and A. fragilis. Within the three lacertids, the microbiota of D. praticola and L. viridis were more closely related to each other than they were to those of P. muralis. Simple Summary: It is a big challenge to maintain a healthy state in sows during late gestation and lactation, and it directly impacts the performance of both sows and their offspring. Essential oil, consisting of multiple active compounds, is regarded as a promising feed additive. In this study, maternal diets were supplemented with oregano essential oil during late gestation and lactation to investigate its potential effects. We collected and analyzed serum and fecal samples from sows to evaluate performance, serum metabolites, antioxidant capacity and fecal microbiota, aiming to provide valuable insights into the utilization of oregano essential oil in animal production. A total of 20 healthy white × landrace sows were evenly and randomly divided into two groups, and fed basal diets unsupplemented or supplemented with 500 g/t Meriden-Stim® from day 100 of gestation until day 21 of lactation. Serum and fecal samples were collected from the sows on the final day for subsequent analysis. Compared to the control group, there were no significant differences in the sows' performances; however, an increase was observed in the piglets' weight at weaning (p = 0.08). Moreover, oregano essential oil (OEO) significantly reduced the levels of urea (UREA) (p < 0.01), total cholesterol (TC) (p < 0.05), low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) (p < 0.05) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (p < 0.05) in serum. In terms of antioxidant indexes in serum, the catalase (CAT) and glutathione (GSH) levels showed significant increases (p < 0.05) while the malondialdehyde (MDA) level exhibited a decrease tendency (p = 0.09). 16S rRNA analysis identified the specific bacteria taxa in feces. OEO significantly decreased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria at the phylum level (p < 0.05). Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) poses a significant healthcare challenge, accounting for nearly 6.1% of global cancer cases. Early detection, facilitated by population screening utilizing innovative biomarkers, is pivotal for mitigating CRC incidence. This study aims to scrutinize the fecal and salivary microbiomes of CRC-positive individuals (CPs) in comparison to CRC-negative counterparts (CNs) to enhance early CRC diagnosis through microbial biomarkers. Material and methods: A total of 80 oral and stool samples were collected from Taleghani Hospital, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran, encompassing both CPs and CNs undergoing screening. The intestinal microbiota, an invisible organ supporting a host's survival, has essential roles in metabolism, immunity, growth, and development. Since intestinal microbiota influences a host's biology, application of such data to wildlife conservation has gained interest. There are standard protocols for studying the human intestinal microbiota, but no equivalent for wildlife. A major challenge is sampling the intestinal microbiota in an effective, unbiased way. Fecal samples are a popular proxy for intestinal microbiota because collection is non‐invasive and allows for longitudinal sampling. Yet it is unclear whether the fecal microbiota is representative of the intestinal microbiota. In wildlife studies, research on the sampling methodology is limited. In this study focusing on amphibians, we characterize and compare the microbiota (small intestine, large intestine, and feces) of two Hong Kong stream‐dwelling frog species: Lesser Spiny Frog (Quasipaa exilispinosa) and Hong Kong Cascade Frog (Amolops hongkongensis). We found that the microbiota of both species are similar at the level of phylum and family, but diverge at the level of genus. When we assessed the performance of fecal microbiota in representing the intestinal microbiota in these two species, we found that (1) the microbiota of the small and large intestine differs significantly, (2) feces are not an appropriate proxy of either intestinal sections, and (3) a set of microbial taxa significantly differs between sample types. Our findings raise caution equating fecal and intestinal microbiota in stream‐dwelling frogs. Simple Summary: Given that skin allergies and pruritic dermatitis are highly prevalent in dogs, with a lack of reliable treatment methods, a dietary supplement containing a blend of probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins, nutrients and a yeast-derived postbiotic was developed with the potential to promote symptom reduction through dermatological, immune, and gastrointestinal support. To assess the impact of this supplement on clinical signs of allergy and the gut microbiome, which may influence such symptoms, in companion dogs with pruritic dermatitis, a 10-week trial was conducted. The supplement supported faster improvements and resolution of pruritus, with differences seen compared to a placebo group after 2 weeks. Simultaneously, at the end of the trial, the gut microbiome in treated dogs was enriched with three of the supplemented probiotic species, and unhealthy species were reduced. The enrolled client-owned dogs represented a variety of breeds, ages, and sizes with diverse pruritus severity, which may make the results of this trial more applicable to a larger population of dogs with pruritic dermatitis. Future trials should expand upon the use of dietary supplements with multimodal capabilities for the relief of pruritic dermatitis under stricter cohort definitions. Pruritic dermatitis (PD) is a common presentation of canine allergic skin diseases, with diversity in severity and treatment response due to complex etiopathogenesis. Evidence suggests the gut microbiota (GM) may contribute to the development of canine allergies. A 10-week double-blind randomized controlled trial evaluated a novel probiotic and nutraceutical blend (PNB) on clinical signs of skin allergy, health measures, and the GM of privately owned self-reported pruritic dogs. A total of 105 dogs were enrolled, with 62 included in pruritus and health analysis and 50 in microbiome analysis. The PNB supported greater improvement of owner-assessed clinical signs of PD at week 2 than the placebo (PBO). More dogs that received the PNB shifted to normal pruritus (digital PVAS10-N: <2) by week 4, compared to week 7 for the PBO. While a placebo effect was identified, clinical differences were supported by changes in the GM. The PNB enriched three probiotic bacteria and reduced abundances of species associated with negative effects. The PBO group demonstrated increased abundances of pathogenic species and reduced abundances of several beneficial species. This trial supports the potential of the PNB as a supplemental intervention in the treatment of PD; however, further investigation is warranted, with stricter diagnostic criteria, disease biomarkers and direct veterinary examination. Background: The role of the intestinal microbiota in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease combined with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is gaining widespread interest. Aims: This study was conducted to investigate the clinical and fecal microbiota characteristics of patients with both ulcerative colitis (UC) and axSpA. Methods: Clinical data were collected from patients with UC. Patients were divided into the axSpA and non-axSpA groups according to human leukocyte antigen-B27 serology and sacroiliac joint imaging results. We obtained fecal specimens from 14 axSpA and 26 non-axSpA patients. All samples underwent 16S ribosomal DNA sequencing. Results: Seventy-three patients with UC were included in this study, and the axSpA incidence was 19.2%. This incidence was significantly higher in patients with C-reactive protein > 10 mg/L. Firmicutes and Faecalibacterium abundances were decreased, and Proteobacteria and Escherichia_Shigella abundances were increased in the axSpA group compared with those of the non-axSpA group. Indicator analysis showed that Escherichia_Shigella was more likely to be an indicator species of axSpA. Additionally, many biosynthetic and metabolic pathways, including glutathione metabolism, fatty acid degradation, geraniol degradation, and biosynthesis of siderophore group nonribosomal peptides, were upregulated in the axSpA group. Conclusion: Patients with UC have a high axSpA incidence, which may be related to the relative abundances of Escherichia_Shigella in these patients. BACKGROUND: β‐Glucans are widely sourced and have various physiological effects, including anti‐inflammatory effects. However, the strength of the anti‐inflammatory activity of β‐glucans from different sources remains unknown due to the lack of rapid and effective biomarkers. This study therefore aimed to screen out the β‐glucans with strong anti‐inflammatory activity from five different sources and to further screen out possible biomarkers in metabolites after fermenting the β‐glucans with gut microorganisms. RESULTS: The results showed that all five β‐glucans inhibited the production of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induced pro‐inflammatory mediators and suppressed the mRNA expression level of TLR4/MyD88. Their anti‐inflammatory mechanisms involved the inhibition of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and suppression of mRNA expression of the NF‐κB pathway and JNK pathway. Among them, barley β‐glucan exhibited the strongest anti‐inflammatory effect, followed by Ganoderma lucidum β‐glucan. Enhanced anti‐inflammatory activity of β‐glucan was found after fermentation and may be related to the increased abundance of metabolites such as vanillin, dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, caffeic acid, acetic acid, butyric acid, and lactic acid. They were strongly positively correlated to the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Blautia, suggesting that the production of those metabolites may be responsible for the flourishing of the beneficial bacteria. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, barley was a preferred raw material for the preparation of β‐glucans with strong anti‐inflammatory activity. Simple Summary: Yeast protein feeds have the potential to replace other protein source feeds. Accordingly, in this paper, we used the industrial and agricultural byproducts of glucose master liquor and corn steep liquor as substrates, and utilized Candida utilis for fermentation. Firstly, the medium components of yeast protein feed were optimized, and then the optimized yeast protein feed was fed to weaned Dongliao black piglets; the feeding effect was analyzed using 16S rDNA and metabolomics. We found that Candida utilis feed has no adverse effects on the growth performance of the pigs and that it improves blood lipids and other indicators. A total of 10 plasma metabolites were correlated with 27 genera of bacteria, as revealed by the results of the combined multi-omics analysis, which were mainly enriched in the pathways of primary bile acid metabolism, histidine metabolism, and tryptophan metabolism. The results show that Candida utilis feed can maintain the growth performance of the pigs and enhance their immunity and maintenance of gut flora homeostasis; this likely occurs through amino acid metabolism. In this experiment, glucose master liquor and corn steep liquor were used as carbon and nitrogen sources, and Candida utilis was used as a strain to ferment yeast feed. The OD value and number of yeast cells were used as response values to optimize the medium components of the yeast feed through a response surface methodology. The optimal medium components were a glucose master liquor concentration of 8.3%, a corn steep liquor concentration of 1.2%, and a KH2PO4 concentration of 0.14%. Under this condition of fermentation, the OD value was 0.670 and the number of yeast cells was 2.72 × 108/mL. Then, we fed Candida utilis feed to Dongliao black piglets, and the effects of the yeast feed on the piglets' growth performance, fecal microbiota, and plasma metabolic levels were investigated through 16S rDNA sequencing and metabolomics. In total, 120 black piglets with an average initial weight of 6.90 ± 1.28 kg were randomly divided into two groups. One group was fed the basic diet (the CON group), and the other was supplemented with 2.5% Candida utilis add to the basic diet (the 2.5% CU group). After a pre-feeding period, the formal experiments were performed for 21 days. The results showed that the addition of Candida utilis to the diet did not affect growth performance compared with the control group. Meanwhile, no significant differences were observed in the serum biochemical indices. However, piglets in the 2.5% CU group had a significantly altered fecal microbiota, with an increased abundance of Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Lactobacillus, and Muribaculaceae_unclassified. Regarding the plasma metabolome, the 12 differential metabolites detected were mainly enriched in the histidine, tryptophan, primary bile acid, and caffeine metabolic pathways. Regarding the integrated microbiome–metabolome analysis, differential metabolites correlated with fecal flora to variable degrees, but most of them were beneficial bacteria of Firmicutes. Collectively, dietary Candida utilis feed had no adverse effect on growth performance; however, it played an important role in regulating fecal flora and maintaining metabolic levels. Simple Summary: The high incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer (CRC) have influenced society to promote research in this field. Dysbiosis of the intestinal microbiota occurring in CRC has been extensively studied. However, microbial shifts occurring at the initial stages of mucosal alterations are less known. In this work, the fecal microbiota of volunteers diagnosed with intestinal polyps were compared with the microbial compositions of nonpathological control volunteers, thereby focusing on the nature of the hyperplastic polyps or conventional adenomas, as well as on the degree of dysplasia (low grade vs. high grade) in the last ones as indicators of colorectal cancer risk development. The findings provide insights into the microbiota changes occurring at the early stages of intestinal mucosal lesions. This work could set a starting point for further studies focusing on the influence of diet and lifestyle factors on the initial alterations of the intestinal mucosa and for the proposal of strategies for their prevention. Progressive intestinal mucosal damage occurs over years prior to colorectal cancer (CRC) development. The endoscopic screening of polyps and histopathological examination are used clinically to determine the risk and progression of mucosal lesions. We analyzed fecal microbiota compositions using 16S rRNA gene-based metataxonomic analyses and the levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) using gas chromatography in volunteers undergoing colonoscopy and histopathological analyses to determine the microbiota shifts occurring at the early stages of intestinal mucosa alterations. The results were compared between diagnosis groups (nonpathological controls and polyps), between samples from individuals with hyperplastic polyps or conventional adenomas, and between grades of dysplasia in conventional adenomas. Some microbial taxa from the Bacillota and Euryarchaeota phyla were the most affected when comparing the diagnosis and histopathological groups. Deeper microbiota alterations were found in the conventional adenomas than in the hyperplastic polyps. The Ruminococcus torques group was enriched in both the hyperplastic polyps and conventional adenomas, whereas the family Eggerthellaceae was enriched only in the hyperplastic polyps. The abundance of Prevotellaceae, Oscillospiraceae, Methanobacteriaceae, Streptococcaceae, Christensenellaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Clostridiaceae shifted in conventional adenomas depending on the grade of dysplasia, without affecting the major SCFAs. [Objectives]The objective of this experiment was to study the microbial composition, testosterone and endotoxin content of feces, from boars with different semen quality, and analyze the correlation between semen quality and fecal microbiota, testosterone and endotoxin. It will provide a basis for improving semen quality by regulating gut microbiota in pig production. [Methods]According to semen quality parameters of all boars in the three months before the experiment, 33 York boars of similar age(479.33±2.85)and body condition were selected and divided into low semen quality group(LSQ, n=12)and high semen quality group(HSQ, n=21). Fresh feces of experimental boars were collected to detect the content of testosterone and endotoxin, and the microbial composition of feces was analyzed by 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing technique. [Results]The fecal testosterone level of boars in the HSQ group was significantly higher than that in the LSQ group(P<0.01), and there was no significant difference in endotoxin levels. There were 3 differential bacteria on family level and 5 differential bacteria on genera level in the boar fecal microbiota of the HSQ group and LSQ group. At the family level, Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes_group was significantly enriched in the LSQ group(P<0.05), Atopobiaceae and Akkermansiaceae were significantly enriched in the HSQ group(P<0.05); at the genus level, g_norank_f_Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes_group and Faecalibaculum were significantly enriched in the LSQ group(P<0.05)and g_norank_f_Atopobiaceae, Akkermansia and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_6 were significantly enriched in the HSQ group(P<0.05). There was a significant negative correlation between Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes_group and sperm motility and sperm density(P<0.01), and there was a negative correlation between Eubacterium_coprostanoligenes_group and fecal testosterone levels(P=0.11); there was a significant positive correlation between Atopobiaceae and sperm motility, sperm density and fecal testosterone levels(P<0.05); Akkermansiaceae significantly positively correlated with sperm motility(P<0.01)and sperm density(P<0.05), and positively correlated with fecal testosterone levels(P=0.09). [Conclusions]The results showed that there were differences in the fecal testosterone level and microbial composition of boars with different semen quality, and there were different degrees of correlations between boar fecal microbial structure and semen quality, fecal testosterone levels. In the vast expanse of Baikal Siberia, indigenous nomadic animal groups have been conserved, grazing on pastures throughout the year. It is believed that the fecal microbiota of these diverse nomadic animal species is unique to each species and closely tied to their feeding environments. We conducted a pioneering comparative analysis of the taxonomic structure and the diversity of fecal microbiota in indigenous nomadic animals inhabiting Baikal Siberia. Our study encompassed 20 deer, 23 yaks, 24 camels, and 29 sheep, using high-throughput 16S rRNA gene profiling. In the fecal microbiota of these animals, we observed a predominant presence of the phyla Bacillota, Bacteroidota, and Verrucomicrobiota, collectively comprising over 88% of the microbial communities. Moreover, these proportions exhibited variations according to the host species. The unculturable Bacillota UCG-005 and UCG-010 are the key groups for all animals. However, at the genus level, distinctive compositions of fecal microbiota were discernible within each animal group. We identified a total of 37 dominant genera across the fecal samples from these four animal species. Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis demonstrated that the fecal microbiota composition clustered among individuals of the same animal species. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) indicated that camels exhibited higher abundances of the family Akkermansiaceae and the uncultured clostridial lineage UCG-010, while deer featured Lachnospiraceae; sheep had Ruminococcaceae; and yaks displayed Monoglobaceae, Bacteroidaceae, and methanogenic archaea from the family Methanobacteriaceae as distinctive marker taxa. Our studies showed that the studied nomadic animals feed mainly on plants belonging to the families Poaceae, Cyperaceae, Asteraceae, and Rosaceae. Simple Summary: The objective of this study is to examine the effects of a phytobiotic-prebiotic feed additive (PPFA) containing a combination of carob pulp, chicory, and fenugreek on growth performance, carcass traits, and fecal microbiota in fattening pigs. Through the S-EUROP evaluation system, we also found that the fattening pigs fed PPFA significantly improved their carcass indicators. Simple Summary: Food grinding is a behavior that occurs in rodents, supposedly affected by a variety of circumstances. It is yet unclear how these elements affect food grinding. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the gut microbiota and food grinding, as well as the impact of varying food supplies on this behavior. Our research showed that food restriction may change the abundance of the gut microbiota and its metabolites as well as reduce the amount of ground food to a larger extent than its effect on food consumption. Therefore, the inhibition of food grinding in Brandt's voles may be attributed in part to differences in the abundance of gut microbiome and their metabolite, short-chain fatty acids, which is induced by food restriction. This study suggests that reducing the food supply could effectively inhibit food grinding during laboratory rodent feeding. Food grinding is supposed to be influenced by multiple factors. However, how those factors affecting this behavior remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effect of food restriction on food grinding in Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii), as well as the potential role of the gut microbiota in this process, through a comparison of the variations between voles with different food supplies. Food restriction reduced the relative amount of ground food to a greater extent than it lowered the relative food consumption, and altered the abundance of Staphylococcus, Aerococcus, Jeotgalicoccus, and Un--s-Clostridiaceae bacterium GM1. Fecal acetate content for the 7.5 g-food supply group was lower than that for the 15 g-food supply group. Our study indicated that food restriction could effectively inhibit food grinding. Further, Un--s-Clostridiaceae bacterium GM1 abundance, Aerococcus abundance, and acetate content were strongly related to food grinding. Variations in gut microbial abundance and short-chain fatty acid content induced by food restriction likely promote the inhibition of food grinding. In this study, by comparing the diets and fecal metagenomes of breastfed elephant calves, captive elephants, and their wild counterparts, we revealed that wild elephants exhibit a preference for crops and grains with a low fiber content. Furthermore, their gastrointestinal tracts harbor distinct microbial communities, functional hydrolases, and metabolic pathways tailored for processing these foods. These findings suggest that wild elephants have adapted to favor a low-fiber diet. This dietary preference, shaped by their unique gut microbiota, provides a significant explanation for the uncommon long-distance migration observed in wild Asian elephants. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between diet, gut microbiota, and migration patterns in Asian elephants through comprehensive metagenomic sequencing analyses. Among the breastfed Asian elephant group, Bacteroidales and Escherichia emerged as the dominant bacterial taxa, while the primary carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) enriched in this group were GH2, GH20, GH92, GH97, GH38, GH23, and GH43, aligning with their dietary source, namely breast milk. The bacterial taxa enriched in captive Asian elephants (CAEs) were mainly Butyrivibrio, Treponema, and Fibrobacter, and the enriched lignocellulose-degrading enzymes mainly included GH25, GH10, GH9, and cellulase (EC 3.2.1.4). These findings are consistent with the high-fiber diet of captive elephants. In contrast, the main bacterial taxa enriched in wild Asian elephants (WAEs) were Ruminococcus and Eubacterium, and the enriched CAZymes included GH109, GH20, GH33, GH28, GH106, and GH39. The abundance of lignocellulose-degrading bacteria and CAZyme content was low in WAEs, indicating challenges in processing high-fiber foods and explaining the low-fiber diet in this group. Simple Summary: Living microorganisms, known as probiotics, provide health benefits to the host and improve livestock performance. Bacillus strains are most commonly used as probiotics. In the present study, sows and piglets were fed diets supplemented with a probiotic containing Bacillus subtilis and B. amyloliquefaciens during two production cycles. Dietary probiotic supplementation improved the performance of sows and contributed to higher birth weight and weaning weight of piglets in two cycles. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of Bacillus-based probiotic diets on reproduction performance, fecal scores, microflora, and economic factors in lactating sows and suckling piglets across two productive cycles. A total of 96 sows, reared in a continuous farrowing system for two full cycles, were divided into two groups: a control group and an experimental group. Sows were fed a basal diet without the probiotic or a diet supplemented with viable bacterial spores. At seven days of age, control group piglets were offered standard creep feed, whereas piglets in the experimental (probiotic) group received a diet containing the probiotic fed to their dams. Sows receiving probiotic-supplemented diets were characterized by significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) average daily feed intake in lactation, lower (p ≤ 0.01) body weight (BW) loss during lactation, and reduced loss of backfat thickness as well as higher body condition score after lactation. Dietary probiotic supplementation increased (p ≤ 0.01) birth weight, total creep feed consumption, litter weight gain, and piglet weaning weight. The probiotic also improved (p ≤ 0.01) overall fecal scores, decreased total E. coli count on day seven and Clostridium perfringens count (trend) in sucking piglets. The total feed cost per weaned piglet was lower in the experimental (probiotic) group. Trichinellosis caused by Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) is a major food‐borne parasitic zoonosis worldwide. Prevention of trichinellosis is an effective strategy to improve patient quality of life. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is closely related to the occurrence and development of several parasitic diseases. Studying the impact of MIF deficiency (Mif−/−) on the alterations in host fecal microbiota due to T. spiralis infection may contribute to proposing a novel dual therapeutic approach for trichinellosis. To reveal the diversity and differences in fecal microbial composition, feces were collected from T. spiralis‐uninfected and T. spiralis‐infected wild‐type (WT) and MIF knockout (KO) C57BL/6 mice at 0, 7, 14, and 35 days post‐infection (dpi), and the samples were sent for 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing on the Illumina NovaSeq platform. Flow cytometry was used to determine the expression levels of IFN‐γ and IL‐4 in the CD4+/CD8+ T‐cell sets of mouse spleens. The results showed that operational taxonomic unit (OTU) clustering, relative abundance of microbial composition, alpha diversity, and beta diversity exhibited significant changes among the eight groups. The LEfSe analysis selected several potential biomarkers at the genus or species level, including Akkermansia muciniphila, Lactobacillus murinus, Coprococcus catus, Firmicutes bacterium M10_2, Parabacteroides sp. CT06, and Bacteroides between the KTs and WTs groups. The predicted bacterial functions of the fecal microbiota were mainly involved in metabolism, such as the metabolism of carbohydrates, amino acids, energy, cofactors, vitamins, nucleotides, glycans, and lipids. Flow cytometry revealed an increased CD3+CD8−/CD3+CD8+ T‐cell ratio and increased IFN‐γ and IL‐4 levels in CD3+CD8− T‐cell sets from WT and MIF KO mice at 7 dpi. The results indicated that both MIF KO and infection time have a significant influence on the CD3+CD8−IFN‐γ+ and CD3+CD8−IL‐4+ response in mice after T. spiralis. In conclusion, this research showed alterations of the fecal microbiota and immune response in both WT and MIF KO mice before and after T. spiralis infection. These results revealed a potential role of MIF in regulating the pathogenesis of trichinellosis related to the intestinal microbiota. Background: Maternal nutrition is essential in keeping a highly efficient production system in the pig industry. Laminarin has been shown to improve antioxidant capacity, reduce the inflammatory response, and favor the homeostasis of intestinal microbiota. However, the effect of dietary supplementation of laminarin on the reproductive performance of sows and the growth of suckling offspring remains unknown. Methods: A total of 40 Landrace × Yorkshire multiparous sows on d 85 of gestation, similar in age, body weight (BW), parity and reproductive performance, were randomly divided into four dietary treatments with 10 sows per treatment, receiving a control diet (basal pregnancy or lactating diets) and a basal diet supplemented with 0.025%, 0.05% and 0.10% laminarin, respectively. The experiment lasted from d 85 of gestation to d 21 of lactation. Results: Laminarin supplementation linearly increased number born alive per litter (P = 0.03), average daily feed intake (ADFI, P < 0.01), and total milk yield of sows during the lactation of 1–21 d (P = 0.02). Furthermore, maternal laminarin supplementation increased the average daily gain (ADG) of piglets while tending to reduce the culling and death rate before weaning. In addition, alterations to the composition of colostrum and milk, as well as to serum inflammatory cytokines and immunoglobulins of sows were observed. The fecal microbiota profile of sows supported the improvement of reproductive performance in sows and the growth performance in suckling offspring. Conclusions: Dietary supplementation of laminarin during late pregnancy and lactation could significantly improve reproductive performance of sows and growth performance of piglets. Kefir is a fermented beverage made of a symbiotic microbial community that stands out for health benefits. Although its microbial profile is still little explored, its effects on modulation of gut microbiota and production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) seems to act by improving brain health. This work aimed to analyze the microbiota profile of milk kefir and its effect on metabolism, oxidative stress, and in the microbiota-gut-brain axis in a murine model. The experimental design was carried out using C57BL-6 mice (n = 20) subdivided into groups that received 0.1 mL water or 0.1 mL (10% w/v) kefir. The kefir proceeded to maturation for 48 h, and then it was orally administered, via gavage, to the animals for 4 weeks. Physicochemical, microbiological, antioxidant analyzes, and microbial profiling of milk kefir beverage were performed as well as growth parameters, food intake, serum markers, oxidative stress, antioxidant enzymes, SCFAs, and metabarcoding were analyzed in the mice. Milk kefir had 76.64 ± 0.42% of free radical scavenging and the microbiota composed primarily by the genus Comamonas. Moreover, kefir increased catalase and superoxide dismutase (colon), and SCFAs in feces (butyrate), and in the brain (butyrate and propionate). Kefir reduced triglycerides, uric acid, and affected the microbiome of animals increasing fecal butyrate-producing bacteria (Lachnospiraceae and Lachnoclostridium). Our results on the brain and fecal SCFAs and the antioxidant effect found were associated with the change in the gut microbiota caused by kefir, which indicates that kefir positively influences the gut-microbiota-brain axis and contributes to the preservation of gut and brain health. Background Recurrence of Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI) is common, prolonging disease morbidity and leading to poor quality of life. We evaluated disease-specific health-related quality of life (HRQL) in patients with rCDI treated with fecal microbiota, live-jslm (REBYOTA [RBL]; Rebiotix) versus placebo. Methods This was a secondary analysis of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 study (PUNCH CD3). The disease-specific Clostridioides difficile Quality of Life Survey (Cdiff32) was administered at baseline and at weeks 1, 4, and 8. Changes in Cdiff32 total and domain (physical, mental, social) scores from baseline to week 8 were compared between RBL and placebo and for responders and nonresponders. Results Findings were analyzed in a total of 185 patients (RBL, n = 128 [69.2%]; placebo, n = 57 [30.8%]) with available Cdiff32 data. Patients from both arms showed significant improvements in Cdiff32 scores relative to baseline across all outcomes and at all time points (all P <.001); RBL-treated patients showed significantly greater improvements in mental domain than those receiving placebo. In adjusted analyses, RBL-treated patients showed greater improvements than placebo in total score and physical and mental domains (all P <.05). Similar improvement in mental domain was observed among responders, while nonresponders showed numerical improvements with RBL but not placebo. Conclusions In a phase 3 double-blinded clinical trial, RBL-treated patients reported more substantial and sustained disease-specific HRQL improvements than placebo-treated patients. The study was to explore effect of adding three kinds of microbial ecological agents (herbal compound microecological agent, porcine lactic acid bacteria compound microecological agent, multiple Bacillus compound microecological agent) on growth performance, meat quality and fecal microbiota of pigs. A total of 168 pigs with similar body weight, half in male and female, were randomly divided into four groups, experimental group had eight replicates in each group, control group (DZ group) had four replicates, with six pigs in each replicate. Pigs in control group were fed with basal diet, pigs in QC group were fed with basal diet + 0.50% herbal compound microecological agent, pigs in XW group were fed with basal diet + 0.10% porcine lactic acid bacteria compound microecological agent, and pigs in YLD group were fed with basal diet + 0.05% multiple Bacillus compound microecological agent. The experiment lasted for 126 d. The results showed that compared with control group, adding three kinds of compound probiotics extremely reduced mortality rate of pigs (P<0.01), increased average daily gain and colorimetric score, decreased shear force. Herbal compound probiotics and porcine lactic acid bacteria compound microbiotics decreased F/G, porcine lactic acid bacteria compound microbiotics improved carcass oblique length. The three probiotics also decreased Chao index, Ace index and Shannon index, increased Simpson index. The experiment indicates that three kinds of compound probiotics can improve growth performance of pigs, herb compound probiotics are effective in improving meat quality, probiotics of porcine lactic acid bacteria are effective in improving carcass character of pigs. Based on this perspective, this research investigated the fecal microbiota of crossbred pigs that underwent a co-feed liquid whey-integrated diet with a metagenomics approach. This study assessed the potential effect of a co-feed liquid whey-integrated diet on the fecal microbiota of 14 crossbred pigs. The experimental design was as follows: seven pigs were in the control group, fed with a control feed, and seven were in the experimental group, fed with the same control feed supplemented daily with liquid whey. The collection of fecal samples was conducted on each animal before the dietary treatment (T0) and one (T1), and two (T2) months after the beginning of the co-feed integration. In addition, blood samples were collected from each pig at the same time points in order to evaluate the physiological parameters. Taxonomic analysis showed a bacterial community dominated by Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Spirochaetes, and Proteobacteria phyla that populated the crossbred pig feces. The diversity metrics suggested that the co-feed supplementation affected some alpha diversity indexes of the fecal microbiota. In addition, the differential abundance analysis at the genus level revealed significant differences for various genera, suggesting that the liquid whey supplementation potentially influenced a part of the bacterial community over time. It has been shown that the gut microbiota plays a central role in human health and disease. A wide range of volatile metabolites present in exhaled breath have been linked with gut microbiota and proposed as a non-invasive marker for monitoring pathological conditions. The aim of this study was to examine the possible correlation between volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath and the fecal microbiome by multivariate statistical analysis in gastric cancer patients (n = 16) and healthy controls (n = 33). Shotgun metagenomic sequencing was used to characterize the fecal microbiota. Breath-VOC profiles in the same participants were identified by an untargeted gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) technique. A multivariate statistical approach involving a canonical correlation analysis (CCA) and sparse principal component analysis identified the significant relationship between the breath VOCs and fecal microbiota. This relation was found to differ between gastric cancer patients and healthy controls. In 16 cancer cases, 14 distinct metabolites identified from the breath belonging to hydrocarbons, alcohols, aromatics, ketones, ethers, and organosulfur compounds were highly correlated with 33 fecal bacterial taxa (correlation of 0.891, p-value 0.045), whereas in 33 healthy controls, 7 volatile metabolites belonging to alcohols, aldehydes, esters, phenols, and benzamide derivatives correlated with 17 bacterial taxa (correlation of 0.871, p-value 0.0007). This study suggested that the correlation between fecal microbiota and breath VOCs was effective in identifying exhaled volatile metabolites and the functional effects of microbiome, thus helping to understand cancer-related changes and improving the survival and life expectancy in gastric cancer patients. The current comparative study evaluated the effects of different dietary changes on the diarrheal symptoms, fecal fermentation characteristics, microbiota, and metabolic profile of healthy puppies. A total of 13 beagle puppies were randomly divided into two groups; puppies in the abrupt change (AC) group were given 260 g of a chicken- and duck-based extruded diet (CD)daily for the one-week transition period, whereas puppies in the gradual transition (GT) group were fed according to a gradual transition ratio of a salmon-based extruded diet (SA) and a CD diets with a difference of 40 g per day for seven consecutive days. Serum samples were collected on D7, and fecal samples were collected on D0 and D7. The results indicated that GT reduced the incidence of diarrhea in puppies throughout the trial period. Dietary change methods had no influence on serum inflammatory factors or fecal SCFAs, but isovaleric acid was significantly reduced after GT. Meanwhile, 16S rRNA sequencing showed that the fecal microbiota was changed after different dietary changes. Simple Summary: The gut microbiota forms a complex microecosystem in vertebrates and is affected by various factors. Wild and captive red deer currently live in the same region but have vastly different diets. In this study, the 16S rRNA sequencing technology was performed to evaluate variations in the fecal microbiota of wild and captive individuals of both sexes of red deer. It was found that the composition and function of fecal microbiota in wild and captive environments were significantly different. As a key intrinsic factor, sex has a persistent impact on the formation and development of gut microbiota. How sex and environment affect the structure and function of fecal microbiota in red deer (Cervus elaphus) is still unclear, particularly with regard to the intake of different diets. In this study, non-invasive molecular sexing techniques were used to determine the sex of fecal samples from both wild and captive red deer during the overwintering period. Fecal microbiota composition and diversity analyses were performed using amplicons from the V4–V5 region of the 16S rRNA gene sequenced on the Illumina HiSeq platform. Based on Picrust2 prediction software, potential function distribution information was evaluated by comparing the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome (KEGG). The results showed that the fecal microbiota of the wild deer (WF, n = 10; WM, n = 12) was significantly enriched in Firmicutes and decreased in Bacteroidetes, while the captive deer (CF, n = 8; CM, n = 3) had a significantly higher number of Bacteroidetes. The dominant species of fecal microbiota in the wild and captive red deer were similar at the genus level. The alpha diversity index shows significant difference in fecal microbiota diversity between the males and females in wild deer (p < 0.05). Beta diversity shows significant inter-group differences between wild and captive deer (p < 0.05) but no significant differences between female and male in wild or captive deer. The metabolism was the most important pathway at the first level of KEGG pathway analysis. In the secondary pathway of metabolism, glycan biosynthesis and metabolism, energy metabolism, and the metabolism of other amino acids were significantly different. In summary, these compositional and functional variations in the fecal microbiota of red deer may be helpful for guiding conservation management and policy decision-making, providing important information for future applications of population management and conservation. In the preference trial, 144 piglets who were 35 days old were weighed and allotted to six treatments with four replications per treatment. Piglets in each treatment group were allowed to choose two of the following four corn-supplemented diets: conventional corn (NC) or extruded corn with low (LEC; 41.82% gelatinization), medium (MEC; 62.60% gelatinization), or high (HEC; 89.93% gelatinization) degrees of gelatinization for 18 days. The results showed that the piglets preferred diets supplemented with a low degree of gelatinization of extruded corn. In the performance trial, 144 piglets who were 35 days old were weighed and allotted into four treatments with six replications per treatment. Piglets in each treatment were fed one of the four diets for 28 days. The results showed that LEC and MEC decreased the feed:gain ratio at 14–28 days and 0–28 days, respectively, and increased the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of crude protein compared with NC. Meanwhile, LEC increased the total protein and globulin content in the plasma on day 14, and MEC increased the ATTD of ether extract (EE) compared with NC. Extruded corn with low and medium degrees of gelatinization increased the abundance of Bacteroidetes at the phylum level and Lactobacillus, Alloprevotella, Prevotellaceae_UCG-03, and Prevotella_2 at the genus level. The three most abundant phyla in fecal microbiota were Firmicutes (48.68%), Bacteroidetes (34.45%), and Euryarchaeota (15.42%). There are 11 genera with more than 1.0% abundance at the genus level. Both alpha diversity and beta diversity showed significant differences among the four groups (p < 0.05). Further, primiparous women were associated with a profound alteration of the fecal microbiota. The most representative taxa included Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group, Prevotellaceae_UCG_003, Christensenellaceae_R_7_group, Ruminococcaceae UCG-005, Ruminococcaceae UCG-013, Ruminococcaceae UCG-014, Methanobrevibacter, and [Eubacterium] coprostanoligenes group, which were associated with energy metabolism and inflammation. Simple Summary: Weaning (that is, removal from the sow) and the following two months are the riskiest periods in a pig's life, especially for pig's gastrointestinal health. The change in diet due to the suspension of the mother's milk, accompanied by an acceleration of both morphological and enzymatic maturation of the intestinal mucosa of the piglets, can worsen digestion and absorption. In this context, the protein requirement of piglets, which are in a phase of rapid growth, may be greater than the intestine's ability to digest proteins. Undigested proteins are the best pabulum for the proliferation of the pathogenic bacterial flora that causes diarrhea. Since these problems can no longer be resolved with prophylactic use of antibiotics, the best balance between intestinal health and growth performance must be found. A diet low in crude protein and supplemented with synthetic amino acids can help achieve this goal. The aim of this research has been to assess the effect of the dietary protein level on piglet growth and post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) incidence. Piglet fecal microbiota and feces composition were also assessed. The experiment was carried out on 144 weaned piglets (Duroc × Large White; 72 piglets per treatment) and lasted from weaning (at 25 days of age) until the end of the post-weaning phase (at 95 days). Two dietary protein levels were compared: high (HP; 17.5% crude protein on average, during the experiment) and low (LP; 15.5% on average). Lower (p < 0.01) average daily gain and feed conversion ratio were observed in LP piglets in the first growth phase. However, at the end of the post-weaning period, the growth parameters were not significantly different in the two diets. Diarrhea scores were lower in piglets fed LP diets than in piglets fed HP diets (28.6% of the total vs. 71.4% in the HP piglets). Fibrobacteres, Proteobacteria, and Spirochaetes were more abundant in the feces of the piglets fed LP diets. Feces nitrogen content was lower in piglets fed LP diets. Objectives: We aimed to determine whether consumption of a fermented dairy beverage containing probiotic microorganisms influences negative mood states, stress, and hippocampal memory performance in healthy adults. Methods: Adults (25-45 yrs, N = 26) free of gastrointestinal and mental illness were enrolled in a single-blind, randomized, controlled, crossover trial. Participants completed testing prior to and after 4-week consumption, with a 2–4 week washout between treatments of: (1) 8 oz of a dairy-based fermented beverage containing 25–30 billion colony forming units of live and active kefir cultures or (2) 8 oz isocaloric, non-fermented, 1% low-fat lactose-free dairy-based control beverage. Hippocampal-dependent relational memory was assessed using a spatial reconstruction task. Negative mood states of depression and anxiety were assessed using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-42 (DASS-42). Pooled 24-hour urine samples were analyzed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to determine urinary free-cortisol (UFC) concentrations. Fecal microbiota composition was assessed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Results:Lactobacillus was increased by 235% following fermented dairy consumption compared to the control (p <.01). Furthermore, the fermented dairy beverage improved performance on two metrics of relational memory, misplacement (p =.04) and object-location binding (p =.03). UFC and DASS-42 scores (all p's >.08) were not significantly changed by either arm of the intervention. No correlations were observed between the change in Lactobacillus and memory performance. Conclusions: Fermented dairy consumption increased the presence of certain microorganisms in the gut and improved relational memory in healthy adults. The utilization of dairy by-products as animal feed, especially in swine production, is a strategy to provide functional ingredients to improve gut health. This study explored the potential effect of a liquid whey-supplemented diet on the fecal microbiota of eleven pigs belonging to the Nero Siciliano breed. Five pigs were assigned to the control group and fed with a standard formulation feed, whereas six pigs were assigned to the experimental group and fed with the same feed supplemented with liquid whey. Fecal samples were collected from each individual before the experimental diet (T0), and one (T1) and two (T2) months after the beginning of the co-feed supplementation. Taxonomic analysis, based on the V3–V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA, showed that pig feces were populated by a complex microbial community with a remarkable abundance of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Spirochaetes phyla and Prevotella, Lactobacillus, Clostridium, and Treponema genera. Alpha and beta diversity values suggested that the experimental diet did not significantly affect the overall fecal microbiota diversity. Methamphetamine (METH) is a potent and highly addictive psychostimulant and one of the most widely used illicit drugs, the abuse of which has become a severe public health problem worldwide. A growing amount of evidence has indicated potential connections between gut microbiota and mental disorders induced by METH and associations with neural and metabolic pathways. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between fecal microbial alterations and neuropsychiatric diseases in METH addictions. Thus, mental disorders and gut microbial alterations were analyzed by self-rating depression (SDS) and anxiety (SAS) scales and 16 S rRNA gene sequencing, respectively. Our results showed that increased SDS and SAS indices and decreased alpha diversity indicated more serious mental disorders and lower bacterial diversity in METH users than in the age-matched healthy control group. The gut microbial composition in female METH users was also significantly altered, with reductions in hydrogen-producing bacteria, including Bacteroides and Roseburia. Molecular hydrogen (H 2) is spontaneously produced by intestinal bacteria in the process of anaerobic metabolism, which is the main pathway for H 2 production in vivo. Numerous studies have shown that hydrogen intervention can significantly improve neuropsychiatric diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Our results showed that hydrogen intervention, including drinking and inhaling, significantly alleviated mental disorders induced by METH abuse, and the inhalation of hydrogen also altered gut microbiota profiles in the METH abusers.
