A large rockslide occurred in Greenland in September 2023, generating a local tsunami and a global signal that resonated for 9 days. The rockslide's global signal was found to be generated by standing waves in the Dickson Fjord. The authors of the study suggest that signals like this could provide a new way of understanding the interactions between climate change, the cryosphere, the hydrosphere, and mass wasting events. In another study, researchers found evidence of durable polarization in the US and other countries, suggesting that polarization is the norm rather than the exception in electoral politics. Food waste disposal bans in the US have shown limited effectiveness in reducing organic waste disposal into landfills, except in the state of Massachusetts. A study on plant science discovered that hydrogen peroxide triggers systemic acquired resistance in plants, protecting them against pathogens. The structure and assembly of the protein coat of the Hepatitis B virus have been unknown, but recent research has isolated different classes of spherical particles containing the protein surface antigen HBsAg, shedding light on its structure and flexibility. Self-discharge in lithium-ion batteries is caused by the insertion of protons into the charged cathode, triggered by the decomposition of the electrolyte, contrary to the widely accepted model based on lithium diffusion. IgE-producing plasma cells, which play a role in allergic diseases, were found to be transcriptionally and phenotypically distinct from other immunoglobulin isotypes. The article investigates how mosquito salivary proteins facilitate arbovirus infection by binding to human immune molecules and inhibiting immune responses. Topics discussed include the role of Nest1 in enhancing virus burden, its impact on immune functions like phagocytosis and inflammation, and its implications for understanding mosquito-borne disease transmission.

The article focuses on the step-by-step process of amyloid processing, particularly the cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP) by g-secretase, which generates neuronal amyloid b (Ab) aggregates, a major cause of neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease. It discusses controlled growth techniques for nanoribbon arrays, particularly in low-dimensional materials like tungsten disulfide.

BIOLOGICAL systems , *MICROORGANISMS , *PARASITES , *VIRUSES , *BIOMOLECULES , *PESTS - Abstract
In many biological systems, one organism, often a virus, bacterium, or other microbe, invades another, generally at the cellular level. The ramifications can be profound. For example, a virus infecting a single animal cell can ultimately lead to the demise of the whole animal. Other microbial parasites may also have catastronhic consequences for their hosts, as seen in the terrible toll taken by malarial parasites in the developing world. Researchers describe invasions by animal viruses, which employ multiple strategies to allow the viral nucleic acids to gain access to the host cell replication machinery and generate progeny viruses.

Discusses a paper by L. Hicke and H. Riezman which indicates that ubiquitinated membrane proteins are marked for proteolysis in vacuoles, not by the proteasome. The membrane protein, cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator; How a protein can be degraded as a result of its ubiquitination even when it cannot be accessed by the proteasome.
