The following passage sheds lights about La agonía de Mariátegui, by Alberto Flores Galindo (1949-1990). In the first place, the text provides an insight about the book and its case of study. In the second place, it addresses three issues that allow an approach to the book's history: Mariátegui, the Amauta, in the author's biography, the French historiographic turn that empowers some crucial elements that support the analysis, and the historicization of Latin American Marxism as a path that is incorporated in the next reprinted versions. The aim of this article is to discuss a notion of literacy as the appropriation of written culture. The discussion is grounded in anthropological references of literacy, drawing from the contributions of the field of New Literacy Studies (NLS) and the formulations of Paulo Freire regarding literacy and written culture. Empirical foundation is anchored in the productions carried out within the scope of the Research Group on Literacy, Language, and Coloniality (GPEALE). It problematizes the established dichotomy between early literacy and literacy practices in both the theoretical field and pedagogical practices, a result of decades of circulation of these concepts within established frameworks in the country. The article presents three examples of "literacy events," ethnographically analyzed, and concludes that these events, observed in classes of different teachers, constitute possibilities for breaking the dichotomy, as the proposed writing situations simultaneously involve social uses and knowledge of the alphabetic writing system. This article examines the social uses of writing in a provincial museum of fine arts on the Argentinean area known as Litoral in the mid-twentieth century, based on different contributions from historical studies on written culture. The interrelated study of bibliographic objects, ephemera, exhibited writings, apparatus and autographs allows us to identify and constitute different writing practices and artefacts as an object of analysis. From the study of a particular case, the article characterizes different typologies of writing and analyses their appropriation by a social group. These uses are contextualized in the light of the emergence of differential forms of valuing writing in the graphic media and in the institutional culture of the museum in the mid-twentieth century. The particularities of an art museum allow us to observe from a singular perspective the insistence of imaginaries that link written inscription with the expression of individuality and the preservation of illustrious names in the collective memory. The study also highlights the notion of written heritage, understood as a conceptual device that makes it possible to give a unitary and integral account of the written objects preserved in a museum. This article focuses on the issue of negotiations of meaning in the short story "Famigerado", by Guimarães Rosa. This short story allows the complex framing of an enunciative scene whose interpretive gestures indicate social dynamics of interactional processes in which the dichotomy between oral culture and written culture is relativized. The aim is to demonstrate that, underlying the interpretive tensions experienced in the negotiation of meanings, it is possible to observe socioeconomic and cultural differences between the characters, which are intertwined with their positionings in social literacy practices, with direct influence both on the origin and the outcome of the narrative. As a contribution to the historical phraseology of Spanish, this article proposes a model of analysis and classification of the wisdom forms of the sixteenth century from the point of view of the relationship between orality and writing, on the basis of examination of the Libro de refranes compiled by Pedro Vallés (Zaragoza, 1549). On the one hand, attention is focused on the metrical and rhythmic factors in the composition of repeated speech forms. On the other hand, the punctuation marks and the graphic sequencing are analyzed from a graphematic perspective. The results of the analysis allow us to postulate that the punctuation of the print is from the paremiographer Pedro Vallés and not the result of the editorial work of a printer. This study offers an approach to the environment of written culture in which Florence Nightingale developed throughout her life, showing a true passion for writing. She communicated through letters with people from the highest social strata of Victorian society, politicians, intellectuals and scientists, in addition to maintaining a close relationship with her family. She composed and published many works for the health field and systematically used the allencompassing power of the press to spread her work. He had the invaluable help of powerful and influential friends and today his written legacy is widely dispersed by institutions in different countries and is being digitized and hosted on the internet, so its dissemination and study allows a better understanding of the personality of the illustrious British nurse. Her figure went beyond the limits of nursing practice and the image of a woman who fought and tireless for women's rights circulated throughout Europe, frequently appearing in the nineteenth-century press in Spain with traits of an international heroine and role model. The graphic culture of border territories became a complex historical reality due to the flow of people and the cultural and social influences which converged in these spaces. Consequently, this fact determined the type of documents which were issued, their formal elements or the types of scripts employed. In this research we shall present some of the collections of documents of the Arquivo Distrital de Braga and the Archivo Catedralicio de Tui which make it possible to study the graphic border between these two dioceses during the 14th and 15th centuries and the possibilities provided by the comparative analysis of some of their palaeographical and diplomatical features. Historiography, even regional, tended to refer to the Northeastern Sertão as non-history, where nature and human life were consumed in a resumed cycle of survival. In contrast, and as interdisciplinary studies and recent historiography have shown, Sertão integrates the history of the Northeast in a sequence of development cycles of the Brazilian economy and society. But it also has a life of its own, in demographic, economic, ethnographic, educational, sociocultural aspects. The farm was the main structure of ownership, power and economic and social organization. In contrast to nomadism and wandering, villages and places of fixed commerce emerged. Municipality, particularly under the modality of municipality and urbanism, is part of the modernization of the Sertão, where education brought a sense of progress through written acculturation, literacy and schooling in new ways and destinations of life. In this study, after framing the history of the Sertão, a line of progress is presented that includes economic, agricultural and industrial development, written acculturation, urbanism, municipalism. The present work intends to value the family archives as a source of research for the written culture in the XVIII and XIX centuries. For this, the author reflects on the possibilities offered by the archives of the medium oligarchies, very numerous and unknown, at the same time poorly organized, taking as reference the Archive of the Marquises of Corvera, united around the lineage of the Bustos, which in turn contains various files of families of different social levels. Special attention is paid to the transmission of written culture within the lineage through testamentary trusts, the professional use of written culture in family administrations and the cultural level of the different social classes related to these administrations, which it observes mainly in the correspondence, the accounts presented by the administrators and the inventories of goods of the houses. This article explores the faith in the evangelizing power of writing (considered as a ministry) in the interactions between Christian Brethren missionaries and indigenous communities in the Northwest of Argentina. The ethnographic observation of multiple uses of this "technology of the intellect" led to a detailed historical reconstruction of the forms of production, circulation and appropriation of printed goods and of the practices associated with the expansion of the evangelical proposal between Buenos Aires and the Northwest. Through ethnographic, documentary and bibliographic sources, we seek to problematize and understand the presence and selective integration of printed goods in terms of objects and relationships of cultural mediation. This study aims to reflect on pedagogical practices about the culture of reading and writing from the perspective of the Cultural-Historical Theory (CHT) and Bakhtin's theory of enunciation, seeking a possible dialogue with the ideals of Freinet's thinking and techniques. It is a research carried out in a public municipal institution of São Paulo State countryside with five and six-year-old children. The criterion for class selection was the fact that the children had experiences in school in the context of Freinet's techniques. After data collection and careful analysis, it is possible to affirm that there is a possibility of dialogue between Freinet, Vigotsky and Bakhtin, and, mainly, teacher's theoretical appropriation of this existing approximation potentiates the pedagogical practices about reading and writing. The article aims to understand the processes of approximation of cultures within the writings of a self-taught individual, and his current practices of reading and writing. It is an emblematic case study, which makes it possible to problematize questions underlying the study of the history and sociology of reading. In the analysis, three dimensions were favored: a) social belonging and the generational non-linearity regarding the participation in written culture; b) the self-taught practices developed in order to master the written system; and c) the transition among what is oral, what is written, and the sociabilities in the appropriation of readings. The intellectual practices developed by this individual reinforce the need not to consider orality and writings as dichotomous poles, because these two dimensions of language act simultaneously in the formation of social disposition, resulting in specific uses of writing and reading. This work presents the results obtained from research conducted by Instituto Tecnológico Metropolitano (ITM) and Institución Universitaria de Envigado in Colombia to determine and describe the reading and writing proficiency levels of students at enrollment in different undergraduate programs at ITM. For this purpose, an academic intervention based on text linguistics and critical reading was conducted with an experimental group. Besides, the control group was composed of randomly selected students from four different Spanish courses. The participants in both groups took tests before and after the intervention to establish their levels of literacy at those moments. The results of the experimental group were better than the control in terms of cohesion, coherence, critical reading and text structure. This demonstrates, not only conceptual, but also practical appropriation of text linguistics. In conceptual terms, there are two main parts in this text. The first one contextualizes the practice of writing letters. As Roger Chartier says, between the XVI and the XVIII centuries, the western societies developed a rather unique practice in which the written word emerges. Before that, it was more or less in the realm of the elites. However, from the XIX century on, all kinds of written registers, apart from any specific classification or tipology, become common among social groups that, by definition, were not at all connected with the practice of writing letters. The second part is made up of various examples of letters written by very different people in very diverse spaces and centuries. Do these letters have anything in common? Are they very different from each other, considering feelings regardless its contextualization? What do their authors expect? And, in the end, what is the quality that impresses us most? Letters were not invented in the 16th or the 17th century, however, it was during this period that they gained significance as an instrument of social communication; writing letters is a social practice in writing culture that achieved popularity as greater number of people became literate and school systems were created. Federico Gamboa (1864 - 1939), was a writer and diplomat, but also was a prolific and disciplined memorialist. His self-referential works, composed of an autobiography (Impressions and memories, 1893) and five journals published in Life (two posthumously), known as My Journal: much of my life and some of the others, narrated more than fifty years in the life of a protagonist and perceptive observer of the Mexican way of life (1880 - 1939). It is known that this Mexican writer maintained a voluminous correspondence with many intellectuals, unfortunately the majorities of these letters are missing and as few are found scattered in other editions of authors or libraries. This is the case of the epistolary relationship between Gamboa and former private secretary of the Emperor of Mexico (1863 - 1867), Maximilian I, José Luis Blasio (1842 - 1923). The 20 letters, conserved in the Centre for Historical Studies, Mexico, CARSO, are just a small sample of this type of personal papers, but allow collate both facet of carefree young Gamboa hinted in his early autobiography, and many facts about his exile (1914 - 1919) and its development in Mexican diplomacy. The fact that Córdoba was the main town in Tucumán made possible that public writing was more or less frequent. Its importance achieved by the intermittent residence of the governor, bishop and ecclesiastical council (permanent since 1699), university, council seminary, female monasteries, convents of the five religious orders and the provincial father of the Jesuits built a communication stance formed by a complex system of signs and symbols. Writing served the civil and ecclesiastical authorities to manifest themselves by means of several roles such as memory, indications, propaganda, exaltation of the faith, the legitimation of power and others. This paper analyses the books Contos gauchescos by João Simões Lopes Neto, Lereias by Valdomiro Silveira and Grande sertão: veredas by João Guimarães Rosa, which are all written in first person. The analysis aims to understand the construction of a fictional subject who imitates orality, in order to simulate the typical speech of Brazilian regions: the South, the inlands of São Paulo and the bush ("sertão") in Minas Gerais, respectively. Orality is one of our main interests, as these books use adaptations of the written language to simulate oral expression. The paper examines also how these books deal with subjectivity, taking into account that first person writing encourages emotional, intimate situations, directing the text towards a confessional tone. Lastly, we state that writing the self leads to writing the Other, showing that regionalist literature produces, in the heart of narrative, an otherness discourse, considering regionalism a self-conscious language that works to mediate internal differences in national culture. This article focuses on the design of analytical methodological path for studies in the field of literacy and mother tongue teaching and learning practices. We aim to propose this design from a conceptual symposium between ideas of cultural and historical basis. We work with vigotskian, bakhtinian and literacies studies concepts, and we propose an interaction diagram, resignifying Hamilton (2000) analytical referrals. This diagram serves for analytical processes in research on the written culture. We are searching analytical paths to studies based on these three theories, which in their constructs don't contain this kind of information due to their particularities that constitute them as science or as literature. The present report is intended to share the findings of an inquiry conducted for writing the paper titled "Me, can I read and write?: An approach to literacy spaces for young and adults ", produced in order to meet the final requirements for earning a licentiate degree in the Sciences of Education. This study aimed to deduce and analyze the levels of alphabetization and conceptions about the uses of written of eight professionals of the company that works for the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). The bases that guided the study are: Street (1984, 1988, 2000, 2003); Hamilton (2000); Barton (1994) and Barton, Hamilton e Ivanic (2000). The study was operationalized through interviews and reading instrument based on studies of Inaf (2009). The results show insularities in these spaces, suggesting the coexistence of different communities of practice and raising fruitful discussions on empowerment and citizenship at the university sphere. In the light of the analysis of the reading responses of young immigrants - the targets of the study - and assuming that literary reading builds up our identities (Barthes, 1979, Bruner, 2002; Larrosa, 2003, -among others-); in this research we focus on analyzing and reflecting on the possibilities that the literary discourse offers as a means of (re) constructing immigrant students' identities in the processes of receiving and learning Spanish as a second language. For this purpose, we draw inspiration from the sociological theories on literary education and the emotional approach to literature (Petit, 1999, 2001, 2008, 2009), Rosenblatt's transactional theory (2002) and the reading responses theoretical trend (Sipe, 2000, 2010). Moreover, we draw on Lewis's concept of distance (2000) and Meek's ideas regarding literature as a scaffold to access literacy. Emilia Ferreiro's investigation on writing as an identity marker and Freinet's theories regarding the free text leads us to create a blog and to analyse its possibilities as a stimulating tool for reading and writing. Since the 13th century, the urban development and the universities consolidation generated the production of a scholarly literature aiming the academic knowledge, especially as an educational project for Christian society. In that background, the Mendicant Orders were particularly important since they were the main responsible for preaching. Among Franciscans (essential for the establishment of a large set of pedagogical resources for illiterate populations and also important within the University), we can assure that Bonaventure of Bagnoregio is the most important friar that will create a significant christocentric pedagogic tradition. Such "christologic anthropology", that actually is a patristic heritage, will be one of the main inspiration source for the social conception from Ubertino of Casale, in the 14th Century. I introduce the notion of American historicitm as a tool to study written culture in the four principal American traditions of letters: Hispanic American, Brazilian, Haitian, and North American. I call attention to the rich collection of writing on the American republics. History was the predominant genre in republican libraries and the apogee of written representation in the first century following independence. I discuss the need to carry out research-oriented collections of American histories and argue for their critical study today. These republican histories still have not been studied in terms of their communalities: the shared need throughout the continent to narrate, describe, comment, and legitimate the new American republics. Only by critically studying republican libraries will we be able to appropriate the rich traditions of American writing. This paper intends to set up some methodological guidelines required for extracting the information value from indirect information sources - as memories and travelers' tales or literary works. The aim is creating a documental and informative corpus about written culture and history of reading. To reach this aim, several methodologies are used, combining analysis of texts, information science procedures and application of Information Technologies. The project had the following phases: previous processing of the original sources by means of their intuitive and conceptual analysis; extracting of the textual passages or references; construction of the documental tools (including a thesaurus); subsequent indexing of the references; and finally, the unification of all that tools in a global automated database which will allow the retrieval of the references according to the user's specifications. As an example, an informative database with all the information about written culture in the Quixote is exposed. It is concluded that this methodology allows to extract the information value (both implicit and explicit) from those indirect sources and serve it to the user quickly and efficiently. This work intends to study the History of Reading through documentary techniques, as information retrieval from direct and indirect sources, making up methods of conceptual content analysis, and creation of tools for information retrieval as thesaurus and others. The junction of all of them in a automated documentary management system, would provide undeniable benefits to find History of Books and Reading signs in many information sources, giving pertinence and effectiveness in the retrieval. In this article we describe the access to literary texts and analyze literacy practices in a particular domain: high school literature class. We adopt a sociocultural perspective in our study of literacy events and practices. In particular, we build on the work of Mary Hamilton and the New Literacy Studies to identify literacy events and its different elements in order to infer the literacy practices that encompass them. The study took place in three different contexts offering two distinct curricular tracks: the general high school track offered in two schools (a Colegio de Bachilleres and a bachillerato federal), and the International Baccalaureate. El artículo enfoca en el acceso a la cultura escrita. Se examina la noción de acceso, como parte del proceso de apropiación de la cultura escrita, a partir del análisis de algunas prácticas de lectura de dos mujeres. Una de ellas cursó solamente un par de años. La otra no asistió la escuela como niña. El trabajo se fundamenta en la teoría sociocultural que enfatiza los procesos sociales del aprendizaje sobre los individuales.
