The article focuses on the 787 aircraft program by Boeing Co. The company is now investigating how shape-memory alloys, which make engine chevrons more efficient, and noise-absorbing nacelle lip liners might reduce the need to carry as much noise-absorbing insulation in the fuselage. The chevron and nacelle tests are part of a broader effort to reduce cabin and airport noise that Boeing, General Electric, Goodrich Aerostructures Group and the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration Langley Research Center undertook in August 2005 at Boeing's Glasgow Flight Test Facility. INSET: Anticipating Certification.
