AbstractThe integration of ChatGPT as a supplementary tool for writing instruction has gained traction. However, uncertainties persist regarding how ChatGPT complements teacher assessment and the overall effectiveness of this combined approach. To address this, we conducted a mixed-methods investigation involving 46 undergraduate students from a research university in southern China, engaging them in a Chinese academic writing task. The intraclass correlation coefficient results revealed ChatGPT’s efficiency in scoring students’ writing, showing moderate to good consistency with teacher evaluations. A paired sample t-test unveiled significant differences in feedback quantity and types between ChatGPT and teacher assessments. Drawing from both interview data and quantitative findings, the study uncovers three ways in which ChatGPT complements teacher assessment, benefiting students with various writing proficiency levels: (1) fostering deeper comprehension of teacher assessments among students, (2) encouraging students to make judgments regarding feedback, and (3) promoting independent thinking about revisions. This study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the role of ChatGPT within the context of a combined assessment approach. It underscores that certain inherent weaknesses in ChatGPT’s functioning can paradoxically lead to favorable outcomes. Background: Due to their long history, complex admixture processes and large population sizes, more research is required to explore the fine genetic structure of Han populations from different geographic locations of China. Aim: To characterise the paternal genetic structure of the Han Chinese in Henan province, which was once the central living region of the ancient Huaxia population, the precursors of the Han Chinese. Subjects and methods: We sequenced Y chromosomes of 60 males from Zhengzhou, Henan Province, and reconstructed a phylogenetic tree for these samples with age estimation. Results: We observed high diversity of paternal lineages in our collection. We found that the in situ Neolithic expansion of the "Major lineages" contributed to a large portion of the paternal gene pool of the Han population in Henan Province. We also detected a large number of "Minor lineages" that diverged in the Palaeolithic Age. Conclusion: We suggest that the high genetic diversity in the paternal gene pool of modern Han populations is mainly attributed to the reservation of a larger number of lineages that diverged in the Palaeolithic Age, while the recent expansion of limited lineages contributed to the majority of the gene pool of modern Han populations. Separation of phosphoproteins is essential for understanding their vital roles in biological processes and pathology. Transition metal-based receptors and antibodies, the routinely used materials for phosphoproteins enrichment, both suffer from low sensitivity, low recovery and coverage. In this work, a novel smart copolymer material was synthesized by modifying porous silica gel with a poly[(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-4-(3-acryloylthioureido) benzoic acid)0.35] (denoted as NIPAAm-co-ATBA0.35@SiO2). Driven by the hydrogen bonds complexation of ATBA monomers with phosphate groups, the copolymer-modified surface exhibited a remarkable adsorption toward native α-casein (a model phosphoprotein), accompanied with significant changes in surface viscoelasticity and roughness. Moreover, this adsorption was tunable and critically dependent on the polarity of carrier solvent. Benefiting from these features, selective enrichment of phosphoprotein was obtained using NIPAAm-co-ATBA0.35@SiO2 under a dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) mode. Purpose:To explore the potential mechanisms of glutamate and its receptors in stress-induced hyperalgesia. Materials and methods:The stress-induced hyperalgesia, glutamate and its receptors are listed as key items in the pubmed database and the related articles are searched. Results:Glutamate level is increased under stress and associated with stress-induced hyperalgesia. Moreover, the role of glutamate in stress-induced hyperalgesia depends on its subtypes of its receptors. Conclusions:Increased glutamate during stress connect with ionotropic glutamate receptors can prompt hyperalgesia, but connect with metabotropic glutamate receptors can inhibit hyperalgesia. Red-flesh navel orange "Cara Cara" is attractive for customers with its bright red color and has been widely planted in China. In this study, phenolic compounds in "Cara Cara" harvested from five different regions were identified and quantified by ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled with Quadrupole-Time of Flight -Electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (Q-TOF-ESI-MSn). Their antioxidant abilities were evaluated by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and oxygen radical absorption capacity (ORAC) assays. Twenty phenolics were detected in crude extraction, with hesperidin (29.36-44.06%) as the dominant component, followed by narirutin (13.44-17.03%) and apigenin-6,8-di-C-glucoside (8.28-12.38%). No free phenolic acid was found in crude extracts and three free phenolic acids (FPA) were determined through alkaline hydrolysis, wherein ferulic acid (86.22-90.49%) existed dominantly. Fujian "Cara Cara" showed the highest total phenolic index (TPI) and total flavonoid index (TFI) values, while the lowest TPI and TFI values were detect in Chongqing "Cara Cara". This study was designed to assess the effectiveness of dietary cellulase (243 U/g, derived fromNeocallimastix patriciarum) and aSaccharomyces cerevisiaefermentation product (yeast product) on ruminal fermentation characteristics, enteric methane (CH4) emissions and methanogenic community in growing goats. The experiment was conducted in a 5 × 5 Latin square design using five Xiangdong black wether goats. The treatments included a Control and two levels of cellulase (0.8 g and 1.6 g/kg dry matter intake (DMI), i.e. 194 U/kg and 389 U/kg DMI, respectively) crossed over with two levels (6 g or 12 g/kg DMI) of the yeast product. There were no significant differences regarding feed intake, apparent digestibility of organic matter, neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre among all the treatments. In comparison with the Control, the ruminal ammonia N concentration was decreased (p = 0.001) by cellulase and yeast product addition. The activities of carboxymethylcellulase and xylanase were decreased after cellulase addition. Moreover, dietary cellulase and yeast product addition led to a significant reduction (p < 0.05) of enteric CH4emissions although the diversity and copy numbers of methanogens among treatments were not dissimilar. The present results indicate that the combination of cellulase and yeast fermentation product can reduce the production of CH4energy and mitigate the enteric CH4emissions to a certain degree. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of supplementation of cellulase and xylanase to diets of growing goats to improve nutrient digestibility, utilisation of energy and mitigation of enteric methane emissions. The experiment was conducted in a 5 × 5 Latin square design using five goats with permanent rumen fistulae and five treatments consisted of two levels of cellulase crossed over with two levels of xylanase plus unsupplemented Control. The cellulase (243 U/g) derived fromNeocallimastix patriciarumwas added at 0.8 and 1.6 g/kg dry matter intake (DMI) and the xylanase (31,457 U/ml) derived fromAspergillus oryzaewas fed at 1.4 and 2.2 ml/kg DMI. There were no differences in apparent digestibility of organic matter, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre and rumen fermentation parameters (i.e. ammonia-nitrogen [N], volatile fatty acids) among all treatments. Dietary cellulase and xylanase addition did not influence energy and N utilisation. But compared to xylanase addition at the higher dose, at the low xylanase dose the retained N, the availability of retained N and digested N were increased (p < 0.01). Moreover, enzyme addition did not affect the enteric methane emission and community diversity of ruminal methanogens. Ternary nanocomposites based on polyamide-6, maleated butadiene (core) -acrylonitrile-styrene (shell) rubber particles (PB-g-SAM), and modified montmorillonite (organoclay) were prepared by a twin-screw extruder. The glassy shell of the core-shell particles can act as a barrier which can resist the entrance of clay into the rubber phase. The influence of mixing sequence on the phase morphology and mechanical properties were studied. The microstructure of the ternary nanocomposites was characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the clay in the polyamide nanocomposites was partially exfoliated, exhibiting a mixture of exfoliated structures. The organoclay plates affected the interfacial adhesion between the polyamide-6 and the core-shell particles. The location of the organoclay plates in the blends with different mixing sequences produced differences of the mechanical properties. The results of mechanical testing revealed that the optimum mixing sequence to achieve balanced mechanical properties was mixing the polyamide-6 and organoclay first followed by mixing with the core-shell particles. This study evaluated and compared student self-reflections and peer feedback on academic writing tasks with respect to both content and language. Twenty-nine undergraduate students were recruited from a university in Hong Kong. Guided by self-efficacy theory, the study provided three main findings. First, students tended to give feedback based on self-reflections rather than on their classmates' work. Students with low self-efficacy tended to give feedback addressing similar areas to different peers. Second, feedback givers with low self-efficacy reported greater difficulties in generating ideas and conducting self-reflections, and therefore in giving peer feedback. The sharing of peer feedback became a source of learning for subsequent self-reflections and peer feedback. Third, high self-efficacy students were more active in seeking advice from instructors. The essential oil from fresh rhizomes of Acorus tatarinowii Schott was obtained using the EP-SFM method (an enzymatic pretreatment and solvent-free microwave-assisted method) and characterized. The optimal conditions for essential oil extraction have been obtained experimentally through experiments on single-factor and response surface-based optimization. The highest essential oil content (1.48%, w/w) was obtained under the optimal conditions by SEM, TGA, FTIR, GC-MS and acetylcholinesterase inhibition activity analysis in vitro assay. The EP-SFM method was found to be effective in improving the extraction rate of essential oils and reducing extraction time, as indicated by the results. More importantly, this method greatly increased the active component content of β-asarone (65.87%), and the content of β-asarone was increased by 18.06% compared with the conventional steam distillation method (SD). The acetylcholinesterase inhibiting activity of EP-SFM essential oil was evaluated as well, which had the best acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity and was closest to the positive control group. Exposure to chronic stress can influence nociception and further induce hyperalgesia. Whether stress modulation of pain in female animals occurs in an estrous cycle-specific manner is still unclear. We profiled the changes in nociception (thermal, mechanical, formalin-evoked acute and inflammatory pain) of female Sprague-Dawley rats after treatment with chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) and investigated whether these changes occur in an estrous cycle-dependent manner. The results showed that CUMS female rats exhibited a lower mechanical withdrawal threshold in proestrus and estrus, a longer formalin-evoked licking time in metestrus and diestrus, but no changes in the latency time on the tail-flick test. The present study findings suggest that chronic stress induces mechanical and formalin-evoked acute hyperalgesia of female rats in an estrous cycle-dependent manner. Our studies showed that chronic stress increased nociceptive sensitivity of female rats. Furthermore females had different stress-induced pain responses in different estrous phases: mechanical hyperalgesia in proestrus and estrus, formalin-evoked acute hyperalgesia in metestrus and diestrus. Andrographis paniculata is an important traditional medicinal herb in which flavonoids are part of the primary specialized metabolites. A flavonoid glucosyltransferase with broad substrate spectrum (named ApUGT3) was successfully identified by screening homologous glycosyltransferase genes from A. paniculata. The enzyme displayed glycosylation activity toward multiple flavonoids in vitro, and the major products were identified as 7-O-glucosides. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that ApUGT3 is the first reported glycosyltransferase from the Acanthaceae family that belongs to cluster I, suggesting that ApUGT3 is a new flavonoid glycosyltransferase of this subcluster. Exocarpium Citri Grandis (ECG) is used as an antitussive and anti-inflammatory agent in traditional Chinese medicine. However, the mechanism of its anti-inflammatory effect remains unknown. In this study, flavonoids of ECG (FECG) were extracted to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect using a RAW264.7 macrophage model. The results suggested that FECG could remarkably inhibit the production of nitric oxide (NO). Meanwhile, FECG decreased the mRNA and protein expression of inflammatory cytokines including tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), while showed an opposite effect on interleukin-10 (IL-10). Furthermore, FECG suppressed the phosphorylation of p38 (p38 kinase), JNK (c-Jun N-terminal kinase), ERK (extracellular signal-regulated kinase) and NF-κB. Taken together, our results indicated that FECG might regulate the activation of MAPK and NF-κB signalling pathways to exert anti-inflammatory effects. Energy recovery from biowaste is of high significance for a sustainable society. Herein, hydrothermal treatment (HT) was applied to valorize pig manure digestate. The effects of hydrothermal operational parameters, including temperature (130-250 °C), residence time (15-90 min), and total solid (TS) concentration (10%-20%), on reducing sugar yield were investigated in this study. Among them, hydrothermal temperature was identified as the most important factor influencing reducing sugar yield, followed by the TS concentration and time. The optimal hydrothermal conditions for the pig manure digestate were 175.6 °C, 35.4 min and a TS concentration of 10% with a reduced sugar yield of 9.81 mg gTS−1. The addition of hydrolysate could enhance methane production by 21.6-50.4% from the anaerobic digestion of pig manure than that without the hydrolysate addition. After HT, the hygienic quality, including fecal coliform number and ascaris egg mortality, was improved in the residual digestate. Antibiotics such as sulfamonomethoxine, oxytetracycline, doxycycline and sulfaclodazine in the pig manure digestate were decomposed during HT and decreased environmental risk. These findings indicated that the hydrothermal process might be an effective technique to recover energy from the digestate of livestock and poultry manure and to improve the residual digestate for subsequent utilization. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) endorsed by the World Health Organization provides a conceptual framework for describing functioning and disability based on a biopsychosocial model. Although dementia is one of the leading causes of disability, yet little is known on the extent to how the ICF has been utilized in dementia research and practice. The study aimed to examine and map the current applications of the ICF with dementia from a body of earlier studies and to explore the potential use in person-centred dementia care. The Arksey and O'Malley framework was used to guide the searching, selecting, and synthesizing process. The scoping review was reported following The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Review (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. A total of 34 studies were included. The applications of ICF were classified into 4 themes: (1) in clinical practice and the education of health professionals (n = 20); (2) community support services and income support (n = 3); (3) population-based, census, or survey data (n = 10); (4) advocacy and empowerment purposes (n = 1). The ICF has made a major impact on dementia in clinical settings. Findings strongly support applying the ICF to person-centered dementia care. Self-assessment is believed to complement peer assessment in the classroom. However, whether, how and why this is done remains unclear. This study, by investigating the combined use of self and peer assessment for an academic writing task among a group of undergraduate students in Hong Kong, aims to shed light on how self-assessment complements peer assessment. Self-assessment is found to complement peer assessment in five ways: 1) it guides students to revise when peer assessment is lacking; 2) self-assessment effectively supplements peer assessment when the students had access to peer assessment; 3) even if a student has access to quality peer assessment, self-assessment complements peer assessment due to the different reflection involved in the two processes; 4) self-assessment can supplement peer assessment in terms of issues related to social-affective burdens for the latter; 5) self-assessment also complements peer assessment in that it benefits high and low-achieving students. Two problems surfaced. One is the students' antipathy against self-assessment despite their overall positive perception about peer assessment; the other is the inadequacy of combining self with peer assessment in fostering learning outcomes regardless that the combined use of self and peer assessment helped the students with revision considerably. Land productivity is one of the sub-indicators for measuring SDG 15.3.1. Land Productivity Dynamics (LPD) is the most popular approach for reporting this indicator at the global scale. A major limitation of existing products of LPD is the coarse spatial resolution caused by remote sensing data input, which cannot meet the requirement of fine-scale land degradation assessment. To resolve this problem, this study developed a tool (HiLPD-GEE) to calculate 30 m LPD by fusing Landsat and MODIS data based on Google Earth Engine (GEE). The tool generates high-quality fused Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) dataset for LPD calculation through gap filling and Savitzky–Golay filtering (GF-SG) and then uses the method recommended by the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) to calculate LPD. The tool can calculate 30 m LPD in any spatial range within any time window after 2013, supporting global land degradation monitoring. To demonstrate the applicability of this tool, the LPD product was produced for African Great Green Wall (GGW) countries. The analysis proves that the 30 m LPD product generated by HiLPD-GEE could reflect the land productivity change effectively and reflect more spatial details. Underground structural deformation occurs because of the complex effects of the internal and external environments and it needs to undergo regional coverage deformation monitoring to realize the early warning of natural hazards. This issue remains a challenge for current deformation monitoring techniques. We present a geographic mapping model based on an ultrasonic omnidirectional array for deformation monitoring. First, an ultrasonic spherical array is established to achieve all-around monitoring for underground structural deformation. Second, an earth longitude–latitude mapping method is adopted to visually manage the spatial monitoring information. Third, the initial working time for the sensor node is allocated by considering a variety of environmental factors and using an intelligent clustering algorithm. The proposed method automatically detects, localizes, and tracks deformations by analysing the monitoring information, which is displayed on the earth longitude–latitude map. Flavonoids are important secondary metabolites that exist in many medicinal plants. Flavonoid glycosyltransferases can transfer sugar moieties to their parent rings, producing various flavonoid glycosides with significant pharmacological activities. Here, we report the molecular cloning of the O-glycosyltransferase TwUGT2 from Tripterygium wilfordii and its catalytic activity was explored by heterologous expression in E. coli. The results showed that TwUGT2 has specific glycosyltransferase activity towards C-3 and 7 hydroxyl groups of flavonoids, thereby converting quercetin and pinocembrin into isoquercitrin and pinocembrin 7-O-beta-D-glucoside, respectively. The biosynthetic pathways of phytosterols and steroidal saponins are located in two adjacent branches which share cycloartenol as substrate. The rate-limiting enzyme S-adenosyl-L-methionine-sterol-C24-methyltransferase 1 (SMT1) facilitates the metabolic flux toward phytosterols. It catalyzes the methylation of the cycloartenol in the side chain of the C24-alkyl group, to generate 24(28)-methylene cycloartenol. In this study, we obtained two full-length sequences of SMT1 genes from Pari polyphylla, designated PpSMT1-1 and PpSMT1-2. The full-length cDNA of PpSMT1-1 was 1369 bp long with an open reading frame (ORF) of 1038 bp, while the PpSMT1-2 had a length of 1222 bp, with a 1005 bp ORF. Bioinformatics analysis confirmed that the two cloned SMTs belong to the SMT1 family. The predicted function was further validated by performing in vitro enzymatic reactions, and the results showed that PpSMT1-1 encodes a cycloartenol-C24-methyltransferase, which catalyzes the conversion of cycloartenol to 24-methylene cycloartenol, whereas PpSMT1-2 lacked this catalytic activity. The tissue expression patterns of the two SMTs revealed differential expression in different organs of Paris polyphylla plants of different developmental stage and age. These results lay the foundation for detailed genetic studies of the biosynthetic pathways of steroid compounds, which constitute the main class of active substances found in P. polyphylla. Celastrol is an important bioactive triterpenoid in traditional Chinese medicinal plant,Tripterygium wilfordii. Methyl Jasmonate (MJ) is a common plant hormone which can regulate the secondary metabolism in higher plants. In this study, the mevalonate (MVA) pathway genes inT. wilfordiiwere firstly cloned.The suspension cells ofT. wilfordiiwere elicited by MJ, and the expressions of MVA pathway genes were all enhanced in different levels ranging from 2.13 to 22.33 times of that at 0 h. The expressions were also enhanced compared with the CK group separately. The accumulation of celastrol in the suspension cells after the treatment was quantified and co-analyzed with the genes expression levels. The production of celastrol was significantly increased to 0.742 mg g−1after MJ treatment in 288 h which is consistent with the genes expressions. The results provide plenty of gene information for the biosynthesis of terpenoids inT. wilfordiiand a viable way to improve the accumulation of celastrol inT. wilfordiisuspension cells.
