Numbers of citations of outstanding conference papers (OCPs) of IEEE Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conferences (NSRECs) from 1966 to 2017 are compared with citations of the most highly cited papers (HCPs) of the corresponding special issues of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON NUCLEAR SCIENCE (TNS), as well as average numbers of citations and cumulative $h$ index, $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ , for all TNS papers published in the same year. 85% of NSREC OCPs are cited at a higher rate than the average for all TNS articles in that year. 55% of NSREC OCP citation totals are higher than $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ for TNS in that year; these rank among the ~8% most highly cited TNS papers for that year. In ~10% of cases, the NSREC OCP is also the most HCP. Similarly high citation impact is found for papers nominated as candidates for OCPs. Radiation effects papers published in annual NSREC special issues comprise a significant fraction of all TNS articles cited $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ times or more. These results support the use of $h_{\mathrm {cum}}$ as a metric of citation impact in this work and show that the NSREC OCP process generally meets awards criteria guidelines for impact. This paper updates and complements a previously published evaluation of computational methods for total and partial cross sections, relevant to modeling the photoelectric effect in Monte Carlo particle transport. It examines calculation methods that have become available since the publication of the previous paper, some of which claim improvements over previous calculations; it tests them with statistical methods against the same sample of experimental data collected for the previous evaluation. No statistically significant improvements are observed with respect to the calculation method identified in the previous paper as the state of the art for the intended purpose, encoded in the EPDL97 data library. It was concluded that for system applications where latchups cannot be tolerated, SEL hardness assurance testing should be performed at a proton energy at least as high as the highest proton energy present in the system environment.

This paper present the impact on hardness assurance testing and the enhanced degradation of proton and neutron of the semiconductor device. In this work, it is shown that protons and neutrons can induce enhanced degradation in both trench and planar geometry power MOSFETs. Specifically, large shifts in current-voltage characteristics of some devices were observed at extremely low proton total dose levels (as low as 2 rad(SiO2)). These shifts induced significant increases (more than three orders of magnitude) in device "off" state leakage current. Neutron irradiations show similar degradation at equivalent fluence levels, even though neutrons do not deposit dose due to direct ionization. In addition, this increase in leakage current occurs at a much lower total dose level than expected based on 60Co gamma ray data. These data therefore suggest that the mechanism responsible for the enhanced degradation is a microdose effect associated with secondary particles produced through nuclear interactions between protons and neutrons and the materials in integrated circuits. The secondary particles deposit enough charge in the gate oxide to induce a parasitic drain to source leakage path in the transistor. Although the results are demonstrated for only trench and planar geometry power MOSFETs, microdose effects can impact the radiation response of other integrated circuit types. Several sources of total cross sections for e+e− pair production by photon interaction with matter, used by major Monte Carlo codes for particle transport, are quantitatively evaluated with respect to experimental measurements collected from the literature. They include data libraries deriving from theoretical calculations and analytical formulae representing empirical fits to tabulations. Although most of these sources of cross sections are based on one theoretical reference, the statistical data analysis documented in this paper highlights differences in their compatibility with experiment. The cross sections collected in the 1997 version of the Evaluated Photon Data Library (EPDL) exhibit the lowest incompatibility with experiment; the paper details the validation results for all the examined cross section sources. The scarcity of experimental data does not allow the validation process to discern pair production in the field of the nucleus and in the field of atomic electrons; nevertheless, this paper documents relevant clues regarding the contribution of the latter to reproduce experimental measurements. The uniformity in collecting scintillation photons to the photomultiplier is one of the key parameters to carry out precise measurement using scintillators. A simple method is proposed to improve the collection uniformity of the scintillation photons just by inserting a light guide between a scintillator and a photomultiplier where the sidewall of the light guide is surrounded by a black paper as a photon absorber. This light guide insertion is expected to have a function to reduce the collection efficiency of the scintillation photons generated closer to the photomultiplier due to the larger transmission loss, since a decrease of the angle of incidence raises the fraction of the photons escaping from the sidewall of the light guide. The experiments using an NE213 liquid organic scintillation detector and gamma-ray sources revealed that the light guide functioned as a compensator for the original tendency of the photon collection and improved the photon collection uniformity. The details of the physical mechanism were examined by simulating the behavior of the gamma rays using the EGS4 electron-photon transport Monte Carlo code and the light propagation process using the ray-tracing program GuideM. Nowadays, the data compression technique is fully developed and widely used in many fields, such as communication, multi-media, image processing, and so on. In large physics experiments, especially the ones with micropattern gas detectors (MPGDs), there are always large numbers of readout channels and many data to be transferred. However, the data compression technique is seldom applied in this field. In this paper, a real-time lossless data compression method, which can reduce the data transmission bandwidth while keeping all information of data is proposed and successfully implemented in a general-purpose MPGD readout system. The compression method discussed in this paper mainly consists of two steps: The first step is to preprocess the data according to the signal characteristics and the second step is to compress the preprocessed data using a common lossless compression algorithm. In addition, the whole compression method is implemented in the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and can run in real time. Vertical Au/ZnO Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) were fabricated on an n+ Si substrate and tested as X-ray detectors in this paper. The high-resistivity ZnO film-based SBDs had a large effective area about 0.78 cm2 and showed a notable sensitivity about 0.78 uC/Gy for X-ray illumination. The detector with linear outputs achieved an X-ray dose measurement across four orders of magnitude of the dose rate from 3.83 mGy/s to 19.00 Gy/s. The response current to switched X-ray illumination exhibited a repeatable and stable characteristic, and the response current mechanism was given and discussed. Core power control of a nuclear reactor during power maneuvering transients is an important issue in a nuclear power plant. This paper, for the first time, presents an optimized PID controller for a nuclear research reactor with a new model of the reactor core, which is based on the fractional neutron point kinetics (FNPK) equations. This model preserves the main dynamic properties of the neutron movement in which the relaxation time related to a quick change in the neutron flux includes a fractional order, acting as an exponent of the relaxation time, to show the dynamic characteristics of the nuclear reactor in the best way. The physical justification of the fractional exponent is associated with nonFickian impressions from the neutron diffusion equation point of view. In addition, in this paper, for the first time, feedback reactivity effects are considered for FNPK model. Genetic algorithm (GA) is used to optimize gains of the PID controller. The objective function is according to the minimization of the integral of time-weighted absolute error (ITAE). The simulation result demonstrates that this optimized control method has satisfactory performance and stability during output-tracking process for higher values of fractional order. The use of protons and heavy ions for the treatment of tumors is increasing since it provides a better relative biological effectiveness (RBE) than traditional radiotherapy. Accurate knowledge of the energy deposition at submicrometric scales is paramount for RBE characterization. This paper shows the latest version of the silicon cylindrical microdosimeter array developed by the Instituto de Microelectrónica de Barcelona, Centro Nacional de Microelectrónica (IMB-CNM, Spain). The detector consists of a matrix of $11 \times 11$ cylindrical sensitive unit cells with individual readout etched within the silicon substrate available in different diameters and pitches between detectors. The detector employed in this paper had a diameter of $15~\mu \text{m}$ , a pitch of $200~\mu \text{m}$ , and a thickness of $5.5~\mu \text{m}$. The detectors were tested in the clinical facilities of Fondazione Centro Nazionale di Adronterapia Oncologica (CNAO) (Pavia, Italy) employing a 12C pencil beam at a therapeutic beam fluence rate. Microdosimetric spectra of lineal energy were measured in different depths of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) up to the Bragg peak. Results were then compared with Monte Carlo simulations using the FLUKA particle transport code, showing an excellent agreement between experimental and simulated microdosimetric distributions even at the high fluence rates associated with clinical beams. In order to reduce the difficulty of the tuning work and improve transmission efficiency at the 320-kV heavy ion multidisciplinary research facility (IMRF), an online optimization system was developed. In this paper, the difficulties of manual tuning are analyzed amply. Various optimization-based approaches were considered and a Bayesian optimization method was selected and implemented in hardware. We have applied the online optimization system at the beamline to increase transmission efficiency. The transmission efficiency obtained by this online tuning system can reach 50%, which is better than the manual tuning 30% to 35%. The general work developed in this paper can provide a reference for the design and implementation of online tuning approaches for various complex systems, not just accelerator facilities. The Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) Luminosity UPgrade board ($\pi $ LUP) was designed by INFN and University of Bologna as a readout interface candidate to be used after the Phase-II upgrade of the Pixel Detector of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The same team in Bologna is also responsible for the design and commissioning of the readout driver (ROD) board—currently implemented in all the four layers of the ATLAS pixel detector (Insertable B-Layer, B-Layer, Layer-1, and Layer-2)—and acquired in the past years expertise on the ATLAS readout chain and the problematics arising in such experiments. Although the $\pi $ LUP was designed to fulfill a specific task, it is highly versatile and might fit a wide variety of applications, some of which will be discussed in this paper. Two seventh-generation Xilinx field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) are mounted on the board: a Zynq-7 with an embedded dual-core Advanced Reduced Instruction Set Computer (RISC) Machine (ARM) Processor and a Kintex-7. The latter features 16 12.5-Gbps transceivers, allowing the board to interface easily to any other electronic board, either electrically and/or optically, at the current bandwidth of the experiments for LHC. Many data-transmission protocols have been tested at different speeds; results will be discussed later in this paper. Two batches of $\pi $ LUP boards have been fabricated and tested; two boards in the first batch (version 1.0) and four boards in the second batch (version 1.1), encapsulating all the patches and improvements required by the first version. The ability and flexibility of the open computing language (OpenCL) for task parallelization in heterogeneous computing platforms [field-programmable gate array (FPGA), CPU, and GPU] are remarkable advantages when designing advanced data acquisition and processing systems. The use of FPGA devices in data acquisition devices increases the capabilities of traditional data acquisition systems, thus allowing the implementation of complex mathematical algorithms with the acquired data. This paper shows an OpenCL implementation of an adaptive probabilistic disruption predictor for fusion devices implemented in a Cyclone V SoC device with an ARM processor, the FPGA logic, and an analog to digital converter. This paper describes the methodology used, the hardware/software system architecture, and the implementation results. The work highlights the critical aspects involved in designing these OpenCL-based systems and, in particular, the implementation of the board support package. This paper also presents the aspects such as the significant differences in the design flow concept between FPGA and GPU OpenCL implementations and how to optimize the FPGA implementation with OpenCL. The sensitivity of memory devices under proton irradiation has been extensively studied over the years. Two main mechanisms have been identified to drive the single-event upset (SEU) sensitivity in the last generation of devices: direct ionization for low proton energies and inelastic nuclear reactions for higher proton energies. Some papers have shown that the Coulomb elastic contribution should be considered. The Influence sur les Composants Avancés des Radiations de l’Espace-Nouvelle Génération (ICARE-NG) instrument onboard the Argentinian satellite Satelite de Aplicaciones Cientificas-D (SAC-D) detected much more protons during descending orbits (when latitude decreases) than for ascending orbits (increasing latitudes). In this paper, we will investigate the anisotropy seen by ICARE-NG Head-A for protons in the coincidence mode from Monte Carlo simulations performed with GEANT4. Our simulations show that the difference in the fluxes observed during ascending and descending orbits comes from the fact that the instrument observed trapped protons or not on each point of the orbits as a result of the instrument and satellite orientations. In addition, we show in this paper that the measurements performed by ICARE-NG can be used in conjunction with our GEANT4 simulations to study the anisotropy of trapped protons, i.e., their distribution relative to their equatorial pitch angle. The detector readout architecture introduced in this paper is intended for small to medium size physics experiments that have moderate bandwidth needs and applications that only tolerate an ultimately low background radioactivity for the parts close to the detector. The first idea to simplify the readout system and minimize the material budget is to use a common fan-out structure to transport from off-detector back-end electronics to the front ends all the traffic required for the synchronization, configuration, and readout. The second idea is to use between each front-end card and the back-end electronics a point-to-point link that runs at the relatively low speed that suffices for the target application. This broadens the possible choices of physical media, e.g., glass fiber, plastic optical fiber, or copper. This paper presents a communication protocol adequate for the proposed asymmetric network. It shows the design of a back-end unit capable of controlling 32 front-end units at up to 12.8 Gb/s of aggregate bandwidth. This back-end unit uses an inexpensive commercial field-programmable gate array (FPGA) module where a large number of regular I/O pins interface to the front-end links, while the few available multigigabit per second capable transceivers are assigned to the communication with the upper stage of the data acquisition (DAQ) system.
