ALMA is an environment kernel supporting the elaboration, analysis, documentation, and maintenance of the various products developed during an entire software lifecycle. Its central component is an environment database n which properties about software objects and relations are collected. These properties include texts written in various formalisms. Two kinds of tools are provided: 1) high- level tools for updating, querying, reporting and maintaining multiple versions of software objects and relations consistently in the database, and 2) syntax-directed tools like structural editors for manipulating the formal texts attached to software objects and relations in the database. A basic feature of the ALMA kernel is its genericity. Tools of the first kind are parameterized on software lifecycle models while tools of the second kind are parameterized on formalisms. Instantiated versions of them for specific models arid formalisms are generated by a meta-environment, which also generates the environment database structure tailored to the desired lifecycle model. This paper concentrates on the database support meta-system and the instantiated database support 5) stems it generates. Our main concern is to discuss the architectural design decisions we made and the mechanisms we introduced for achieving parameterization on lifecycle models. In particular, we describe the entity-relationship meta-model we designed for meta-defining a particular lifecycle model as input to the meta-system. This meta-model is an extension of standard entity-relationship models in that n-ary relations can have attributes, they can be defined on unions of entity types, type specialization with multiple inheritance is supported, and a mechanism is provided for defining views yielding different environment subdatabases associated with different classes of users and/or tools. It is being recognized that recent programming environments have made significant progress towards improving the programming process. In adhering to this goal of software engineering, this paper introduces a new basis for programming environments. This basis encourages development of software in fragments of various types, called fragtypes. Fragtypes range from a simple expression type to a complete subsystem type. As a result, they are suited to the development of software in an enlarged scope that includes both programming in the small and programming in the large; The paper shows how new proposed operations on fragtypes can achieve unusual effects on the software development process. Fragtypes and their associated construction rules form the basis of the programming environment MUPE- 2, which is currently under development at McGill University. One of the best features of the UNIXTM Shell is that it provides a framework which can be used to build complex programs by interconnecting existing simple programs. However, it is limited to linear combinations of programs, and building of more complex programs must be accomplished by executing sequences of commands. This paper introduces Backus' FP (Functional Programming) as an alter- native command language for UNIX. In FP, programs are true functions and another distinctive feature of FP languages is that they contain functional forms, which are constructs for combining programs to build new programs. Also, the functional style of programming provides a natural way of exploiting parallel machine architecture. In this paper it is shown how to enhance the power of the UNIX Shell by the inclusion of the FP functional forms. The FP-Shell is fully implemented in "C" under UNIX. It interprets standard UNIX commands as FP primitive functions and standard UNIX files as FP system objects. It also serves as a framework for the study of functional programming languages. This paper presents a novel time-domain fault location algorithm on HVDC transmission lines. The Bergeron line model is adopted to construct a time-domain fault location equation, considering unsynchronized two-end measurement and uncertain line parameters. The zero time reference point is set to the sample point of arrival at each end for the traveling wave-head. Time-tags of all sample points change with the zero time reference. So the time difference of two-end measurements has changed also, and equals the time difference between arrivals at two ends for the traveling wave-head. That makes it possible to mix the traveling wave theory with the Bergeron time-domain fault location method. Besides, the ratio coefficient of wave velocities between different frequencies and digital band-pass filter are presented for better performance of the proposed method. Simulations and tests demonstrate that the proposed method can locate faults accurately on the HVDC lines even in the case of loss of signals from GPS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conservation voltage reduction (CVR) and distributed-generation (DG) integration are popular strategies implemented by utilities to improve energy efficiency. This paper investigates the interactions between CVR and DG placement to minimize load consumption in distribution networks, while keeping the lowest voltage level within the predefined range. The optimal placement of DG units is formulated as a stochastic optimization problem considering the uncertainty of DG outputs and load consumptions. A sample average approximation algorithm-based technique is developed to solve the formulated problem effectively. A multiple replications procedure is developed to test the stability of the solution and calculate the confidence interval of the gap between the candidate solution and optimal solution. The proposed method has been applied to the IEEE 37-bus distribution test system with different scenarios. Attracting K–12 students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is viewed as a critical element for benefiting both the economy and society. This paper describes an outreach program, conducted in a Brooklyn, NY, USA, public middle school, aimed at educating students in mechatronics, biology, and bioinspiration. The program is designed to foster student interest in STEM subjects, especially engineering-related concepts, by actively demonstrating their application in solving tangible real-world problems. It consists of a series of lectures and practical activities that culminate with a hands-on bioinspiration-based event at the New York Aquarium. Survey results show that students who participated in the program have a better understanding of the relationship between engineering and nature, demonstrate improved knowledge of select STEM topics, and are more interested in pursuing STEM careers. In this paper, we describe research results arising from a technology transfer exercise on agent-oriented requirements engineering with an industry partner. We introduce two improvements to the state-of-the-art in agent-oriented requirements engineering, designed to mitigate two problems experienced by ourselves and our industry partner: (1) the lack of systematic methods for agent-oriented requirements elicitation and modelling; and (2) the lack of prescribed deliverables in agent-oriented requirements engineering. We discuss the application of our new approach to an aircraft turnaround simulator built in conjunction with our industry partner, and show how agent-oriented models can be derived and used to construct a complete requirements package. We evaluate this by having three independent people design and implement prototypes of the aircraft turnaround simulator, and comparing the three prototypes. Our evaluation indicates that our approach is effective at delivering correct, complete, and consistent requirements that satisfy the stakeholders, and can be used in a repeatable manner to produce designs and implementations. This paper presents a computational method that employs Natural Language Processing (NLP) and text mining techniques to support requirements engineers in extracting and modeling goals from textual documents. We developed a NLP-based goal elicitation approach within the context of KAOS goal-oriented requirements engineering method. The hierarchical relationships among goals are inferred by automatically building taxonomies from extracted goals. We use smart metering system as a case study to investigate the proposed approach. Smart metering system is an important subsystem of the next generation of power systems (smart grids). Goals are extracted by semantically parsing the grammar of goal-related phrases in abstracts of research publications. The results of this case study show that the developed approach is an effective way to model goals for complex systems, and in particular, for the research-intensive complex systems. Because of its inherent safety feature and potential economic competitiveness, modular high temperature gas-cooled reactor (MHTGR) has been seen as one of the best candidates for building the next generation nuclear plants. As a typical small modular reactor (SMR), MHTGR can be incorporated with new energy resources to build micro-grids, and can also be utilized to build large nuclear energy systems having inherent safety feature at any power rating. The nuclear steam supplying system (NSSS) of MHTGR-based plants is composed of an MHTGR and a once-through steam generator (OTSG). The NSSS coordinated control is crucial for providing the load-following function. Motivated by this, a nonlinear coordinated control for MHTGR-based NSSSs is proposed in this paper. Based upon theoretical analysis, sufficient conditions for this newly-built control law to guarantee globally asymptotic closed-loop stability are given. The feasibility of this novel coordinated control strategy is verified through numerical simulation, and simulation results show that this new control law can provide satisfactory regulating performance for the NSSS by properly choosing its feedback gains. In this paper we develop a general framework to reason about testing. The difficulty of testing is assessed in terms of the amount of tests that must be applied to determine whether the system is correct or not. Based on this criterion, five testability classes are presented and related. We also explore conditions that enable and disable finite testability, and their relation to testing hypotheses is studied. We measure how far incomplete test suites are from being complete, which allows us to compare and select better incomplete test suites. The complexity of finding that measure, as well as the complexity of finding minimum complete test suites, is identified. Furthermore, we address the reduction of testing problems to each other, that is, we study how the problem of finding test suites to test systems of some kind can be reduced to the problem of finding test suites for another kind of systems. This enables to export testing methods. In order to illustrate how general notions are applied to specific cases, many typical examples from the formal testing techniques domain are presented. We propose in this paper to consider code-smells detection as a distributed optimization problem. The idea is that different methods are combined in parallel during the optimization process to find a consensus regarding the detection of code-smells. To this end, we used Parallel Evolutionary algorithms (P-EA) where many evolutionary algorithms with different adaptations (fitness functions, solution representations, and change operators) are executed, in a parallel cooperative manner, to solve a common goal which is the detection of code-smells. An empirical evaluation to compare the implementation of our cooperative P-EA approach with random search, two single population-based approaches and two code-smells detection techniques that are not based on meta-heuristics search. The statistical analysis of the obtained results provides evidence to support the claim that cooperative P-EA is more efficient and effective than state of the art detection approaches based on a benchmark of nine large open source systems where more than 85 percent of precision and recall scores are obtained on a variety of eight different types of code-smells. The framework of dynamic movement primitives (DMPs) contains many favorable properties for the execution of robotic trajectories, such as indirect dependence on time, response to perturbations, and the ability to easily modulate the given trajectories, but the framework in its original form remains constrained to the kinematic aspect of the movement. In this paper, we bridge the gap to dynamic behavior by extending the framework with force/torque feedback. We propose and evaluate a modulation approach that allows interaction with objects and the environment. Through the proposed coupling of originally independent robotic trajectories, the approach also enables the execution of bimanual and tightly coupled cooperative tasks. We apply an iterative learning control algorithm to learn a coupling term, which is applied to the original trajectory in a feed-forward fashion and, thus, modifies the trajectory in accordance to the desired positions or external forces. A stability analysis and results of simulated and real-world experiments using two KUKA LWR arms for bimanual tasks and interaction with the environment are presented. AC loss of \Nb3\Sn cable-in-conduit conductors (CICC) decreases after cyclic mechanical loading, but remains almost the same in case of Nb-Ti ones. It was observed during previous ITER CS, TF, and PF inserts tests in JAEA. The same phenomena have been detected on numerous ITER CS, TF, and PF short samples tested in the SULTAN facility. Experimental methods of ac loss investigation in JAEA-Naka and SULTAN were different, but the final results showed a good agreement. Analysis and numerical investigation of the present work were based on RF PF&TF CICCs SULTAN test results, theory of superconductivity, and our own physical and engineering understanding of evidence. Cyclic mechanical loading in both JAEA and SULTAN was initiated by electromagnetic force. In this paper, we attempt to explain why hysteresis, coupling, and mechanical loss decrease dramatically after cyclic mechanical loading and thermo-mechanical stress caused by WUCD (warm-up and cool-down) in \Nb3\Sn CICC. Integration of inertial navigation system (INS) and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) is usually implemented in engineering applications by way of Kalman-like filtering. This form of INS/GNSS integration is prone to attitude initialization failure, especially when the host vehicle is moving freely. This paper proposes an online constrained-optimization method to simultaneously estimate the attitude and other related parameters including GNSS antenna's lever arm and inertial sensor biases. This new technique benefits from self-initialization in which no prior attitude or sensor measurement noise information is required. Due to the presence of dependence linkages, changing one element of a product (e.g., functions and components) can trigger changes to other related elements and lead to numerous possible propagation paths (i.e., the “snowball effect”). To address this issue, this paper proposes the matrix-based clustering method. Two matrix models are considered in this research: design structure matrix for the linkages of components and domain mapping matrix for the linkages of functions and parameters. After denoting some product elements as “target” representing the initial changes, the clustering method is used to form and classify the clusters according to the change impacts from target elements. The interfaces between the clusters are also identified to manage the propagation process. The purpose of this method is to provide the cluster and interface information for implementing change requests. In view of the methodical advancement, the clustering method can tailor a clustered matrix for specific change requests and handle two types of matrices. The value proposition for the installation of power factor (PF) correction (PFC) to avoid costly utility penalties is easily understood. The attractive payback of such PFC opportunities often pushes the project ahead without engineering considerations. In the case of medium-voltage PFC, lack of upfront engineering can lead to unexpected consequences in the performance of the PFC equipment ranging from nuisance trips and blown fuses to catastrophic failure in the extreme. In this paper, the authors propose a systematic approach to the design of PFC for medium-voltage systems. Three actual case studies were selected to illustrate this systematic approach and show that it can be applied regardless of the size, type, and complexity of the facility. Such a methodology is composed of load flow and harmonic measurements, harmonic analysis, utility billing demand and PF analysis, and reactive compensation specification in the form of either capacitors or harmonic filters, if needed. Diverse and competing design constraints, including daily and week load cycles, nearby utility capacitors, switched or stepped requirements, specifics of utility tariffs, loads with high harmonic content, and harmonic resonance, are identified, analyzed, and then incorporated into the solution to ensure successful performance of the PFC equipment. Trust is widely considered to be essential for the smooth functioning of digital ecosystems. However, trust by its very nature, and due to the virtual connection between entities, is extremely fragile. Trust has a life cycle which is composed of building, maintaining, and declining. Given the fragility of trust in virtual environments, it is challenging to work out how to maintain the level of trust (specifically positive trust) between two interacting parties. Once positive trust has been established in the trust building phase, a methodological framework is needed to maintain the existing trust level, so that the relationship may be sustained in the future. In this paper, we present a methodology for maintaining trust in industrial digital ecosystems. The methodology proposes the use of a third party agent, an iterative negotiation process, proactive performance monitoring, and intelligence metrics recalibration of the trust level. In a trust-based relationship, trust can be regarded as having been maintained if the final trust is greater than or equal to initial trust. This paper describes the experiences of using an advanced, low-cost robot in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. It presents three innovations: It is a powerful, cheap, robust, and small advanced personal robot; it forms the foundation of a problem-based learning curriculum; and it enables a novel multi-robot curriculum while fostering collaborative team work on assignments. The robot design has many features specific to educators: It is advanced enough for academic research, has a broad feature set to support a wide range of curricula, and is inexpensive enough to be an effective outreach tool. The low cost allows each student to have their own robot for the semester, so they can work on activities outside the classroom. This robot was used in three different classes in which it was the foundation for an innovative problem-based learning curriculum. In particular, the robot has specialized sensors and a communications system that supports novel multi-robot curricula, which encourage student interaction in new ways. The results are promising; the robot was a big success in graduate, undergraduate, and outreach activities. Finally, student assessments indicate a greater interest and understanding of engineering and other STEM majors, and class evaluations were consistently above average. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Efficient methods to perform motion recognition have been developed using statistical tools. Those methods rely on primitive learning in a suitable space, for example, the latent space of the joint angle and/or adequate task spaces. Learned primitives are often sequential: A motion is segmented according to the time axis. When working with a humanoid robot, a motion can be decomposed into parallel subtasks. For example, in a waiter scenario, the robot has to keep some plates horizontal with one of its arms while placing a plate on the table with its free hand. Recognition can thus not be limited to one task per consecutive segment of time. The method presented in this paper takes advantage of the knowledge of what tasks the robot is able to do and how the motion is generated from this set of known controllers, to perform a reverse engineering of an observed motion. This analysis is intended to recognize parallel tasks that have been used to generate a motion. The method relies on the task-function formalism and the projection operation into the null space of a task to decouple the controllers. This paper discusses an all-encompassing approach to increase the number of students in engineering through innovative outreach, recruiting, and retention programs. Prior to adopting these programs, the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Oklahoma (OU), Norman, experienced a reduction in engineering enrollment similar to the trend that has occurred across the U.S. over the last few years. As a result, the school investigated the key factors that influence selection of engineering as a career path and initiated a corrective program to reverse this trend. The program involves focusing on the present through retention, on the immediate future through recruiting, and on the distant future through outreach. The focus of all of these programs is to mobilize the OU-ECE faculty and student body to present advanced engineering technologies, innovative demonstrations, and hands-on activities at a level that the individual student can understand and appreciate. “Multisourcing” has emerged as an important strategy for global information technology (IT) service outsourcing in today's turbulent business environment. The existing literature on IT service provides only limited insights into this phenomenon. However, in the manufacturing domain, a similar concept, supply base management, has been extensively studied. In this paper, we integrate related research in IT service and manufacturing to explore how firms can successfully pursue global multisourcing strategy in IT service. Specifically, we first conceptualize a firm's multisourcing supply base along the dimensions of breadth and depth and theorize about the impact of these two dimensions on outsourcing outcomes. Second, based on this framework, we analyze four configurations of multisourcing supply base. Finally, we conduct case studies of two global financial services firms to illustrate the configurations and identify patterns of evolution of global multisourcing strategy in customized information systems development. Despite an increase in the offshore outsourcing of information technology (IT) projects, little research has been carried out to identify issues that client managers (CMs) encounter when managing projects with offshore vendors. Also research on how CMs’ responsibilities change to effectively manage offshore outsourcing relationships has received little attention. We conducted a case study of an offshore outsourcing relationship between a U.S. client and its Indian vendors engaged in software-testing projects. In this paper, we identify six project management activities that underwent substantial change. We then describe the coping strategies that CMs employed effectively to deal with changing project management activities. We conclude by discussing the interplay of multiple global boundary variables and its effect on the project management activities. We integrate insights from literature on global distributed teams, organizational communications, and offshore outsourcing to theoretically ground the relationship between the boundary variables and the coping strategies. In today’s competitive business environment, pharmaceutical companies intensively explore contract R&D opportunities with small biotechnology companies and in-license externally discovered compounds to replenish their product pipelines. In order to maintain and increase external collaboration productivity, pharmaceutical companies must find the most promising outside compounds generated in the research stage as the inputs for later in-house development stages. Thus, the “R”-to-“D” transition is significant in ensuring the scientific quality of in-licensed compounds. In this paper, an optimal adoption strategy is proposed to evaluate the in-licensing opportunities for a pharmaceutical company as it finances several biotech partners who focus on the same therapeutic area. This strategy is fundamentally an outsourcing decision process for the pharmaceutical company, and it is modeled as a Poisson process during which small biotechs submit their outcomes to the pharmaceutical company. We give the formulation for the process, whose simulation results, here, indicate that under the high uncertainty of both time value and market payoff, the pharmaceutical company should make its decision by trading off research time for gradually emerging information on the compound’s quality. Specific characteristics that emerged in this process are discussed. We also carried out interviews with pharmaceutical R&D managers to explore the “practical applicability” of the model. This paper describes the structure and the underlying rationale of a new course dedicated to capability maturity model integration (CMMI)-directed design of wireless sensor networks (WSNs)-based biomedical applications that stresses: 1) engineering-, medico-engineering-, and informatics-related issues; 2) design for general- and special-purpose systems; and 3) the creation of synergistic effects that enable formation of entrepreneurial multidisciplinary teams able to organize and implement the development of these health-related pervasive computing applications. Formal education so far still focuses on treating only strictly separated and specialized topic areas. However, as the need for cooperation and mutual learning between students oriented toward different fields grows, the need for a multidisciplinary educational approach becomes more and more important. For a technical education to be complete, it is no longer enough to train scientists and engineers solely in technical areas. In development and implementation of technology-driven applications, multidisciplinary issues should be properly addressed in the academic sense. The interdisciplinary understanding and synergy achieved are tested through examinations and workshops. In the current times, microelectromechanical systems and nanoelectromechanical systems form a major interdisciplinary area of research involving science, engineering, and technology. A lot of work has been reported in the area of modeling and control of these devices, with the aim of better understanding their behavior and improving their performance. Effective engineering-change management (ECM) is a real challenge in mechanical engineering industry and manufacturing companies. Computer-aided design systems are usually connected to other systems such as ERP or product data management, but currently this integration does not provide effective means to manage engineering change (EC). While communication between multidisciplinary teams working on a project is known to have a significantly positive impact on the ECM, the communication between disciplines is generally performed solely through message exchange. Experts could feel the need to meet to agree on the requested changes, which in turn translates into longer design and manufacturing processes. There is a need for a system that assists human experts in making decisions about ECs. Such a system will considerably reduce the processing time following a change-request procedure. This paper proposes a collaborative tool named EchoMag, which assists designers and experts during the change-management process. The proposed system ensures the coherence of data between the various disciplines involved in the change process. EchoMag also assists experts in making decisions by proposing alternative solutions when change requests are not agreed upon. Forecasting the diffusion of innovations plays a major role in managing technology development and in engineering management overall. In this paper, we extend the conventional Bass model stochastically by specifying the error process of sales as log-normal and mean-reverting. Our model satisfies the following reasonable properties, which are generally ignored in the existing literature: sales cannot be negative, the error process can have a memory, and sales fluctuate more when they are high and less when they are low. The conventional and widely used model that assumes normally distributed error term does not have these properties. We address how to forecast properly under the log-normal and mean-reverting error process, and show analytically and numerically that in our extended model sales forecasts can substantially alter conventional Bass forecasts. This paper is about fault detection and identification of discrete event systems. The proposed approach is based on Petri nets (PNs) that are used to design reference and faulty models. The main contribution concerns the design and identification of these models according to the statistical analysis of the alarm sequences that are collected on the considered system. The model structure is described as a state graph, and the parameters of the probability density functions (pdfs) for transition firing periods are estimated. Normal and exponential pdfs are considered, and estimation is detailed in case of concurring behaviors. The reference models, described as timed PNs, are then used for fault detection and isolation issues. This paper proposes a boundary analysis method for reliability and economic assessment in distribution systems. The main purpose is to deal with uncertainties of input data, especially when statistical information is unavailable or insufficient. The presented method uses interval numbers to enclose variability and incertitude in reliability and economic parameters, and provides the estimates on upper and lower bounds of reliability and economic indices. This paper explains the organization and execution of a summer engineering outreach camp designed to attract and motivate high school students as well as increase their awareness of various engineering fields. The camp curriculum included hands-on, competitive design-oriented engineering projects from several disciplines: the electrical, environmental, mechanical, civil, and chemical engineering fields. The camp also provided additional information on financial aid, the academic programs in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) offered at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK), as well as various career options for prospective engineers. The implementation of the camp activities and the well-designed hands-on projects not only increased the students' satisfaction, but also improved their self-confidence and their interest toward engineering disciplines. The engineering outreach camp survey results clearly indicated the success of the camp and the effectiveness of the hands-on, competitive engineering design experiences to attract students to engineering professions. This paper reports on a multifaceted approach in electrical engineering outreach focused on the area of semiconductor technology. The activities developed can be used in combination for a very wide range of audiences in both age and stage of education, as has been demonstrated with great success. Moreover, the project has developed cross-disciplinary activities designed to engage nonscientific audiences and has used entirely nonscientific venues, such as art galleries. The suite of activities, given the umbrella title Chips for Everyone, includes: Chips for Everyone: drop-in activities for fairs, shows, shopping centers; Chips with Relish: interactive workshops for groups of school pupils; Chips with Flair: an arts-science collaboration in music, art, video, and engineering to present a new perspective on semiconductor technology. To achieve this diverse mix of outreach activities, the Chips for Everyone team represents a very broad spectrum of skills, its members being engineering academics, musicians, artists, education academics, public engagement specialists, and student teachers in technology. The development process is quite generic and could be applied in other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) areas. The subject focus of the project is semiconductor technology, a technology that influences the daily lives of everyone and yet is largely invisible. The activities seek to engage, engender interest, and promote informed discussion about this technology and engineering in general. From modest beginnings as a filler during the setting up of another outreach program, Chips for Everyone has developed into a major program reaching over 25 000 young people and families in school workshops, shopping centers, and art exhibitions in Scotland and across the U.K. The development method for the activities is innovative and creative, using the complimentary skills of research academics and students in both electronic engineering and technology initial teacher education (ITE). Teaching Opportunities for Partners in Science (TOPS) is an outreach program using volunteers (the "partners") for: 1) assisting teachers in grades K-8 with preparation and delivery of science and engineering (S&E) lessons in the classroom; 2) providing content knowledge to teachers when needed to teach quality science and engineering lessons; 3) motivating students with career and educational models and information; and 4) educating families through after-school family science events. The outreach program began with partners who were retired scientists and engineers. Currently, the source of volunteers includes scientists and engineers who are employed or on leave as well as retired. The program began in 1993 at the San Joaquin County Office of Education, Stockton, CA, with three Partners at three elementary schools. The program now has 33 Partners at 32 schools in a five-county region in central California. Most partners volunteer to serve a minimum of a half-day per week during the school year; however, the schedule can be flexible to accommodate differing needs of the Partners. The partners attend a TOPS Institute during the summer preceding each school year. The Institute serves as a training course for new partners. This paper covers the history of the TOPS program, the selection and training of partners, the relationship between the partners and classroom teachers, development of lessons, comments from a partner and a classroom teacher, and the results of an evaluation of the program. This paper presents both analytical models and Monte Carlo simulations concerning strain engineering in n-type silicon FinFETs. Our analysis identifies the stress configurations and the physical mechanisms able to produce a significant stress-induced mobility enhancement and provides the insight necessary for device optimization. We first derive analytical expressions for the stress-induced changes of the subband minima and of the transport masses, which clearly identify the stress components leading to mobility improvements. Then, we present multisubband Monte Carlo mobility simulations, which confirm the potentials for remarkable stress-induced mobility enhancements in n-FinFETs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cost related to the wiring of sensors and actuators in the manufacturing industry is rapidly increasing with the number of field devices. Complex engineering as well as cable wear and tear are important factors. For over a decade, fieldbuses have been the dominating approach to simplify installation, reduce engineering efforts, and increase reliability at the field level. The next step in this process is to introduce wireless communication in certain problematic parts of the field network. In order to do this, a reliable real-time communication system, designed to cope with the harsh environments where factory automation systems are employed, is required. The Wireless Interface for Sensors and Actuators (WISA), with its two subconcepts WISA-power and WISA-com, is such a system. This paper discusses how the WISA concept can be efficiently integrated into wired field networks for factory automation-both state-of-the-art [Process Fieldbus Decentral Peripherals (PROFIBUS DP)] and new (PROFINET 10) networks. We propose amendments to WISA, which will improve the 802.11b/g coexistence and harmonize the integration of WISA for sensor/actuator communication in, e.g., PROFINET 10 systems. The suggested improvements relate to both the radio protocol in order to improve coexistence with other wireless technologies as well as concepts for the integration of WISA into the field network of PROFINET/PROFIBUS. This paper presents an equivalent-circuit model of an asymmetric disc-type ultrasonic motor and discusses its applications in the evaluation of the motor's characteristics. The modeling process is based on the mechanical vibrations of the piezoelectric ceramic disk in both the radial (tangential) and coupling directions, the rigid body assumption of the rotor, and the assumption of a single contact point between the stator and the rotor with the most significant lateral elliptic motion effect. The overall model is composed of three admittance-type equivalent circuit models of the metal back plate, the stator, and the rotor. The advantages of the model are exemplified by comparing the numerical and experimental results, thereby showing that the model may be useful and pragmatic for electrical engineers in designing, simulating, and characterizing such motors. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impact of process-induced stress on the generation current of fully strained Si1-x Gex source/drain junctions. The Ge content of the compressively strained SiGe epitaxial layer plays a key role the tensile stress levels present in the underlying Si substrate. Current-voltage (I-V) measurements were employed to further investigate the leakage current enhancement due to the stress-induced bandgap narrowing in the Si depletion region, when extended defects are formed. An empirical approach is proposed to describe the Ge content dependence of the bandgap-shrinkage-induced leakage current. An increase of the intrinsic carrier concentration as a function of the stress mismatch is observed. Moreover, the role of the epilayer thickness in the generation current is also discussed. This paper presents a generalized periodic imperfect preventive maintenance (PM) model for a system with age-dependent failure type. The imperfect PM model proposed in this study incorporates improvement factors vis-à-vis the hazard-rate function, and effective age. As failures occur, the system experiences one of the two types of failure: type-I failure (minor), and type-II failure (catastrophic). Type-I failures are rectified with minimal re- pair. In a PM period, the system is preventively maintained following the occurrence of a type-II failure, or at age T, whichever takes place first. At the Nth PM, the system is replaced. An approach that generalizes the existing studies on the periodic PM policy is proposed. Taking age-dependent failure type into consideration, the objective consists of determining the optimal PM & replacement schedule that minimize the expected cost per unit of time, over an infinite horizon. In modern industries, there is intense pressure to continuously reduce costly, unscheduled maintenance of complex systems. To obtain high availability with reduced life cycle total ownership costs, classical maintenance policies are not optimal. Indeed, these polices do not allow us to perform maintenance only when it is necessary because they are not able to forecast system damage states in the future. To predict precisely the future system damage state, it is necessary to take into account how and where the system will be used. To build incremental damage models, this paper presents a generic methodology and formalism based on the system decomposition in three levels: environment, mission, and process. Predictions are performed via a sequence of known mission parameters, and environmental conditions. This paper describes the implementation of a new quantum-based system for the generation of 120 V RMS, 5 A RMS, sinusoidal, active, and reactive power over the 50 to 400 Hz frequency range. The system accurately relates the spectral amplitudes and phases of the voltage and current waveforms of the generated power to a programmable Josephson voltage standard (PJVS) by using a novel differential sampling technique. The system also employs a new voltage amplifier that performs self-calibration and corrections of the gain and phase errors. This paper describes how to calibrate a four- terminal-pair (4TP) LCR meter at the right (90°) angle. The LCR meter uses the right angle signal to process a synchronous detector as a vector signal receiver. The right-angle calibration method uses, at a minimum, one variable-phase signal generator (SG) and a phase shift circuit. The SG does not require a precision right angle, but it does need good phase stability. The described phase shifter provides the required differential phase of nearly the right angle. As a result, the right-angle phase deviation of the LCR meter is better than 65 μrad (0.223′) with 37-μrad (0.127′) uncertainty at 10 MHz. Deregulation of the electric power industry has introduced new uncertainties for market participants and made planning of transmission expansion more difficult. More flexible transmission expansion plans are needed, to cope with the increased risks. In this paper, a novel planning approach is proposed to meet the above challenge. In our approach, the planning process is modeled as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, so that conflicting objectives can be optimized simultaneously. To minimize planning risks, our method identifies several scenarios based on statistics and expert knowledge; the most flexible expansion plan is selected as the plan that has least adaptation cost. The proposed method is tested with the IEEE 14-bus system. Promising results are obtained to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this paper is to present a new fuzzy logic method for midterm energy forecasting. The proposed method properly transforms the input variables to differences or relative differences, in order to predict energy values not included in the training set and to use a minimal number of patterns. The input variables, the number of the triangular membership functions and their base widths are simultaneously selected by an optimization process. The standard deviation is calculated analytically by mathematical expressions based on the membership functions. Results from an extensive application of the method to the Greek power system and for different categories of customers are compared to those obtained from the application of standard regression methods and artificial neural networks (ANN). In this paper, a primary frequency control strategy based on fuzzy logic, designed for variable-speed wind generators, is proposed and tested on a 2.2-kW test bench. The fuzzy logic supervisor ensures a regular primary reserve for a large range of wind speeds without any wind speed measurement. This supervisor controls simultaneously the generator torque and the pitch angle to keep the primary reserve; it determines in real time the generator power reference value. The fuzzy logic supervisor is compared to a simpler strategy, based only on the control of the generator torque. This classical strategy ensures a regular power reserve only when the wind generator operates at full load, and the generator power reference needs to be determined previously or by the network manager. A procedure for implementing a fuzzy logic supervisor in real time is proposed. The experiments indicate the regularity of the power reserve and the ability to contribute to frequency control. This paper describes use of a multiobjective optimization method, elitist nondominated sorting genetic algorithm version II (NSGA-II), to the generation expansion planning (GEP) problem. The proposed model provides for decision maker choice from among the different trade-off solutions. Two different problem formulations are considered. In one formulation, the first objective is to minimize cost; the second objective is to minimize sum of normalized constraint violations. In the other formulation, the first objective is to minimize investment cost; the second objective is to minimize outage cost (or maximize reliability). Virtual mapping procedure is introduced to improve the performance of NSGA-II. The GEP problem considered is a test system for a six-year planning horizon having five types of candidate units. This paper presents a multiobjective performance index-based size and location determination of distributed generation in distribution systems with different load models. Normally, a constant power (real and reactive) load model is assumed in most of the studies made in the literature. It is shown that load models can significantly affect the optimal location and sizing of distributed generation (DG) resources in distribution systems.
