Fujikane shows that Hawaiian mythological chants contain specific and reliable geographical descriptions and thus constitute legitimate forms of "cartographies" or "geographies" as she labels them. It was not until the 1830s that any Western-based mapping was done by Hawaiians themselves, and earlier mapping by non-Hawaiians was not undertaken for the benefit of the people of Hawaii (Fitzpatrick, I Early Mapping of Hawaii, i 1986). Information about the topics discussed at the 22nd International Conference on the History of Cartography is presented. The conference included four exhibitions, 62 papers and 39 posters that were shared by some 266 attendees from 38 countries. The topics covered at the conference included mapping relief, languages and maps, maps and tourism, time as the cartographic fourth dimension and other aspects of the history of cartography.

The 30th International Conference on the History of Cartography will be held in Lyon, France from July 1-5, 2024. The conference, organized by the University of Lyon/UMR5600, will take place at the Maison Internationale des Langues et des Cultures (MILC) and the University of Lyon (UdL) building, both located near the historical center of Lyon. The conference will feature map exhibitions showcasing collections from Lyon institutions and will explore the theme of "Confluences—Interdisciplinarity and New Challenges in the History of Cartography." The article discusses the author's views about the digital approaches to cartography. The computerized methods of cartography may further the cartographers' understanding of non-modern maps. The digital mapping technologies can give way to new forms of presentation of maps and speedy transmission of images between scholars the world over. The author also discusses the content of the First International Workshop on Digital Approaches to Cartographic Heritage held in Greece in May 2006.

The article highlights the 21st International Conference on the History of Cartography in Budapest, Hungary on July 17-22, 2005. About 250 participants met on the city on the Danube. The theme of the conference, "Changing Borders," was particularly appropriate in view of border shifts that have affected Europe over the countries.

Existing narratives of the history of cartography placed indigenous and ancient maps together in a preliminary section as precursors of cartography per se and ignored East Asia's mapping traditions. Ultimately, the object of Thrower's intellectual passion was not the science of cartography, but the graphic map designed by human ingenuity and crafted by the human hand. By contrast, when Thrower came to write his own summary of map history - I Maps and Man i (1972) - he included a separate chapter on East Asian cartography, and he discussed indigenous mapping as only suggestive of how and why prehistoric peoples would likely have made and used maps. She points out that their published maps were mainly intended to raise funds and gain political support in Europe and observes that there was often a close relationship between Jesuit missionary maps and military or official maps. By bringing together maps from several political jurisdictions and geographical regions, she also shows how Jesuit cartography varied from place to place, and how it was affected by different political regimes. Information on the 23rd International Cartographic Conference which was held in Moscow, Russia, on August 4-10, 2007, is presented. Traditional Russian dance and music were demonstrated at the opening of the meeting. Several exhibitions were also conducted during the event, displaying various cartographical products and children's drawings submitted to the Barbara Petchenik Children's Map Competition. New officers of the International Cartographic Association (ICA) were also elected.

A comparison of Giuseppe Bagetti's landscape sketches, watercolours, oil paintings and engravings with contemporary maps and the existing landscape reveals that in the creation of Bagetti's landscapes, narrative played a role that differed in cartographic and artistic representations. The comparison also demonstrates that his images were powerful constructions that were more successful in reflecting a narrative of glorious conquest than was possible through cartography. This paper offers a critical examination of Bagetti's representations of Napoleon's northern Italian campaign, which he sketched and painted between 1802 and 1809. Bagetti's paintings were neither pacifist nor an expression of Piedmontese patriotism but instead were inspired by, and constructed according to, a narrative about the conquest that reflected the views of the French authorities. The narrative found expression in formal written instructions from the central cartographical office in the Dépôt de la guerre, Paris, in verbal and written instructions from Bagetti's immediate superior, Jean François Martinel, and in letters personally addressed to Bagetti from the officer commanding the Depot. It is clear from a careful reading of the correspondence and from a comparison of Bagetti's paintings with both the present landscape and maps made at the time that Bagetti's disputes with his supervisors revolved around protecting his artistic integrity and reputation rather than resisting the authority of a foreign regime. The Peutinger map is an extraordinary world map drawn c.1200 and long considered a copy of a Roman road map made for late antique travellers. This paper presents arguments against these assumptions and concludes that the lost original was more likely to be a Carolingian display map. Ninth-century scribes had the expertise and resources necessary for creating an antiquarian work based on Roman itinerary lists, while Carolingian rulers had ample motivation for commissioning a map to display their Roman imperial ambitions. While the history of cartography has freed itself from debilitating debates over the scientific and artistic status of maps, considerations of the relationship between art and cartography have continued to focus largely on pre-modern maps, avoiding critical examination of twentieth-century art and science in cartography and leaving intact the impression that these followed distinct paths in the modern period. In this paper, however, I have drawn on theoretical work in Science Studies and taken account of modern art's separation from aesthetics to suggest that an examination of art and cartography in the twentieth century should focus on mapping practices rather than on maps as such. A summary overview of modern-art movements and selected works indicates a continued, if critical, engagement of avant-garde artists with cartography, and the examination of more popular newspaper artwork produced in the context of the intensely modem visual culture of mid-twentieth century Los Angeles indicates a similarly close connection between modernity, art and cartography. The modern period of chart making in Russia began in the reign of Peter the Great. Peter created the country's navy, which became the main focus for cartography in the eighteenth century. In this paper the multi‐faceted duties of naval officers in the charting and mapping of seas, rivers, forest resources and other features important for ship building and the development of navigation, and essential to Russia's geo‐political interests, are considered. The history of the early stages of specialized naval education and the training of surveyors at the Moscow Mathematical‐Navigational School (from 1701) and the St Petersburg Naval Academy (from 1715) are outlined, and the first surveys in the Baltic and Caspian seas are described. Finally, special attention is paid to the hydrographical surveys and charting of the Aegean Sea during the Russian‐Turkish war of 1768–1774, the sources and methods involved, and the little‐known Atlas of the Archipelago (1788) which was created from the surveys. This paper examines John Norden's career as a surveyor, places his maps and other topographical work in this context, and describes his long struggle for patronage—the key to official position in the England of Elizabeth I and James I. Norden finally gained positions under these monarchs and became a trusted servant to the Earl of Salisbury and senior surveyor to the Duchy of Cornwall.
