Abstract

She points out that their published maps were mainly intended to raise funds and gain political support in Europe and observes that there was often a close relationship between Jesuit missionary maps and military or official maps. By bringing together maps from several political jurisdictions and geographical regions, she also shows how Jesuit cartography varied from place to place, and how it was affected by different political regimes. Alti'c touches lightly on the thorny political, cultural and ethical issues surrounding Jesuit cartography. [Extracted from the article]
