Objective: The ENT Scotland society (formerly known as the Scottish Otolaryngological Society) has two meetings a year and accepts oral presentations from trainees. This study aimed to identify publication rates from these meetings. Methods: Abstracts of the presentations are published in The Journal of Laryngology and Otology. A structured search on PubMed and Google Scholar was undertaken to identify which presentations from the 2005 to 2014 meetings have been published. Results: Of the 145 abstracts found, 60.7 per cent were presenting clinical research and 44.1 per cent were related to the head and neck subspecialty. Seventy-three abstracts (50.3 per cent) were associated with publication as a peer-reviewed article; otology papers were more likely to be published than those focusing on other subspecialties (64.3 per cent, p = 0.036). No correlation was found between publication and other factors. Conclusion: Presentations at the ENT Scotland meetings undergo unbiased peer review and are as likely to be published as those of other conferences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 10th UK National Heat Transfer Conference was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, during 10-11 September 2007 under the auspices of the UK Heat Transfer Committee and was co-organized by the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University. The conference was part of a series of conferences which were initially organized every 4 years but more recently every 2 years in a synchronized manner with the European Thermal Sciences Conference and International Heat Transfer Conference. background The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is the most challenging health crisis that we are facing today. Against the backdrop of this pandemic, it becomes imperative to study the effects of this infection on pregnancy outcome and its mode of delivery. Hence, the present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of COVID-19 infection on pregnancy as well as the outcome. Materials and methods In this retrospective observational analytical study, a total of 150 pregnant women were included in the study, from 1 September 2020 to 1 May 2021, most of them confirmed that positive COVID-19 by PCR, depending on questionaries' paper distributed to the infected pregnant women at that time in Babylon government. Results We observed that young females (<20 years) had the least chance of infection, rural areas were more vulnerable to infection than urban areas, employed pregnant women had a higher chance of infection than unemployed, and that the majority of women were treated at home. Of those infected patients, those who were infected during their third trimester were more likely to present with complications with their pregnancy (rather than COVID-19), such as IUGR and IUD etc. Regarding the mode of delivery, there is a slightly increased rate of caesarian section (CS) when compared with the typical population, after excluding the obstetric indication for CS, such as complete placenta prevea. Conclusion There is no significant effect of COVID-19 infection on maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnancy, despite a slight increase in preterm labor and C/S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mouth may be presented and understood in different ways, be subject to judgement by others and, as we age, may intrude on everyday life due to problems that affect oral health. However, research that considers older people's experiences concerning their mouths and teeth is limited. This paper reports on qualitative research with 43 people in England and Scotland, aged 65–91, exploring the significance of the mouth over the lifecourse. It uses the concept of 'mouth talk' to explore narratives of maintaining, losing and replacing teeth. Participants engaged in 'mouth talk' to downplay the impact of the mouth, demonstrate socially appropriate ageing, and distance themselves from 'real' old age by retaining a moral identity and sense of self. They also found means to challenge dominant discourses of ageing in how they spoke about missing teeth. Referring to Leder's notion of 'dys-appearance' and Gilleard and Higgs' work on the social imaginary of the fourth age, the study illustrates the ways in which 'mouth talk' can contribute to sustaining a sense of self in later life, presenting the ageing mouth, with and without teeth, as an absent presence. It also argues for the importance of listening to stories of the mouth in order to expand understanding of people's approaches to oral health in older age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This inaugural virtual issue of the Health Information and Libraries Journal ( HILJ) celebrates the contribution of health information in informing health and social care library and information provision. In April 2014, a conference in Edinburgh honoring Simon Frith upon his academic retirement featured three days of paper sessions, enjoyable activities, and distinguished guests. For the benefit of colleagues who did not attend it, this article offers some description of and purposefully subjective commentary on the conference Studying Music. Particular attention is given to the themes highlighted in the call-for-papers: Frith's position in music scholarship, writing about music, the current relationship among the various disciplines that claim music as a subject of study, and boundaries between different categories of music (high/low, popular/art). Topics of highlighted papers include the socio-semantics of vocal timbre, the etymology of the term "popular music," historiography of celebrities, sociology of race relations, and a plethora of perspectives on music and technology. Studying Music presented several strengths, especially because its paper and panel sessions encompassed researchers from media, music, and sociology departments. The achievements of Simon Frith and popular music scholarship were duly celebrated, extended, and reconsidered in new ways. Yet, a persistent ideological suspicion of art music scholars and musical analysis among popular music scholars who were present troubled me, as a musicologist who researches French art music. Taking this antagonism as a point of departure, this article concludes with a reflection on both positive and negative social and political implications of art music scholarship based on my own experiences in academic life. The article discusses the highlights of the Meeting of Commonwealth Law Ministers in Edinburgh, Scotland, in July 2008. Reports on the 7th Annual International Philosophy of Nursing Conference which took place at the University of Stirling, Scotland, with delegates coming from across three continents. Sally Thorne's opening paper which examined the problems around the oppositional nature of construction of truth claims; Michael Traynor's paper which provided a different view of the historical development of nursing by drawing comparisons between nursing and that of the rise of English as an academic pursuit.

The weather and the striking Scottish environment provided an excellent backdrop for the joint ISAGA/SAGSET International Conference held in Edinburgh in August 2002. This conference brought together more than 150 academics, practitioners, and researchers in diverse fields of practice from more than 25 countries. This report provides a brief taste of the depth and variety of papers and experiences available at a conference designed to integrate the multiple perspectives of these two major international experiential learning associations. Conference activities included papers and presentations from many fields of practice with opportunities to experience and critique simulation and game designs, share research initiatives, engage in debate on critical issues, and discuss conceptualizations of this important area of learning. These academic activities were balanced by a number of social ones providing opportunities to experience Scotland's culture and renew friendships with colleagues. This special section of IEEE Transactions on Semiconductor Manufacturing presents extended versions of papers originally presented as part of the IEEE 33rd International Conference on Microelectronic Test Structures (ICMTS) which was hosted at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Originally planned to take place at the University’s South Hall Complex in April 2020, the impact of the global pandemic led to the difficult decision to move to a fully virtual conference held between 4th – 18th May 2020. This paper is a shortened and revised version of the Closing Plenary given to the World Congress of the Association of Social Economics, and Cairncross Lecture, University of Glasgow, June 2012. Mainstream economics is seen as unfit for purpose because of deficiencies that have long been criticised by a marginalised heterodoxy. These include the taking out of the historical and social even if bringing them back in on the basis of a technical apparatus and architecture that is sorely inappropriate. These observations are illustrated in passing reference to social capital but are particularly appropriate for understanding the weakness of ethics within mainstream economics. An alternative is offered through taking various “entanglements” (such as facts and values) as critical point of departure, leading to the suggestion that ethical systems are subject to the 10 Cs—Constructed, Construed, Conforming, Commodified, Contextual, Contradictory, Closed, Contested, Collective and Chaotic. The IRPA13 Congress took place from 14-18 May 2012 in Glasgow, Scotland, UK, and was attended by almost 1500 radiological protection professionals. The scientific programme of the Congress was designed to capture a snapshot of the profession's views of the current state of knowledge, and of the challenges seen for the coming years. Purpose -- This paper aims to describe the development and evaluation of a resource for use by practitioners to self-evaluate their policy and practice in relation to the Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007. Design/methodology/approach -- The self-evaluation resource was developed in the context of multi-agency adult protection policy and legislation to reflect key quality indicators relevant to stakeholders, the community, practitioners and their agencies. Findings -- The quality indicators were selectively piloted by 15 of the 28 multiagency partners in Scotland. The utility of the resource was demonstrated and in some cases the outcomes led to changes in policy and practice. The effect of resource restrictions was reported to have a bearing on the utility of the resource in some partnerships. Research limitations/implications -- The quality indicators were not equally piloted with participants focusing on evaluation of case outcomes rather than wider structural and agency-wide aspects of adult protection. Practical implications -- The adult protection, self-evaluation resource has been identified as a potential means of enabling multi-agency partnerships to establish the effectiveness of their own policy and practice and offers the potential for cross-Scotland comparisons and bench marking. Social implications -- The resource provides the basis for self-evaluation and improvement in adult support and protection that will make the lives of adults at risk of harm safer . Originality/value -- An innovative approach is described to enable self-evaluation by adult protection practitioners and policy makers to judge the effectiveness of their own performance and ensure improved performance. The 3-yearly World Congress of Epidemiology is the premier, international, scientific conference organised under the auspices of the International Epidemiological Association (in open competition). This paper explores the justification for seeking to host the Congress and reflects on the structures and processes adopted in making the XIXth Congress in Scotland happen. Preparing the bid was invaluable for forming collaborations, generating scientific ideas, and garnering opinion. After the bid was accepted, we formed a local organising committee, named the Management Executive Committee to signal its decision making authority; and scientific, fundraising, marketing, international and social subcommittees. There was uncertainty about critical matters such as delegate numbers, costs and the total budget. Early decisions had to be made on, for example, the fee and fundraising target (~250,000), despite financial risks. Development of the scientific programme was a critical step that under-pinned fundraising and marketing and permitted involvement of the international committee. Overall the 2011 WCE succeeded. The key ingredients to success were: a large collaboration of institutions and individuals; early pledges of financial support mostly from the UK; the valuable and relevant experience of the professional conference organisers; unstinting support and advice from IEA; and the effectiveness of the committee structure. The educational and professional development benefits of this WCE will reach a worldwide community and not just delegates, because of video, PowerPoint and textual accounts being open access on the Internet. This reach is unprecedented for IEA's World Congresses. e-Learning has been frequently heralded as a transforming influence on global education and corporate training. Despite such rhetoric, the adoption, diffusion and exploitation of e-Learning by educational institutions and organizations have been slower than anticipated. In this paper we attempt to examine the future of e-learning by adopting a scenario planning approach, which formed the basis of a recent major international conference held in Edinburgh, Scotland in February 2004. We set out the background of the study, the methodology used to investigate the future(s) of e-learning and reflect on the process and outcomes of the exercise to provide some assistance for practitioners in the field. Our general conclusions are that the scenarios have been a valuable starting point to engage in a more informed discussion of how e-learning may transform education and training markets and the ways in which people learn over the next decade.
