The 10th UK National Heat Transfer Conference was held in Edinburgh, Scotland, during 10-11 September 2007 under the auspices of the UK Heat Transfer Committee and was co-organized by the University of Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt University. The conference was part of a series of conferences which were initially organized every 4 years but more recently every 2 years in a synchronized manner with the European Thermal Sciences Conference and International Heat Transfer Conference. Thus, the UK heat transfer community, along with the international participants, can get together every year in a national or European or international heat transfer conference. The article presents information on the fringe festival and an International Association for Medical Education (AMEE) Fringe. The concept of fringe festival originated in the Edinburgh International Festival in 1947 when some uninvited acts proceeded to perform on the fringe of the official festival. The AMEE Fringe started in 2003. The AMEE organizers set some principles for the event which included that the presenters and performers must address issues and themes related to medical education and the formats to be used must be other than the official format. The fringe concept has develped association with political conferences and arts festivals worldwide. The AMEE Fringe has done 46 presentations in 12 sessions till date. It also lists the participants who performed in AMEE Fringes.

This article presents information on AMEE 2004 meeting in Edinburg. Both in a symposium devoted to the topic and in free communication and poster sessions, AMEE contributors demonstrated a variety of examples of how outcomes have been devised and, more importantly, are being used at course and programme level, in individual institutions, in local or national collaborations and across nations. There has been a wave of interest in the use of portfolios for assessment purposes in the health professions in many countries over the past decade. There were 12 presentations and two posters on the topic at the Edinburgh meeting but even from this small sample some trends and take-home messages are evident. The portfolio is the property of the portfolio builder. Some of that property is private and some is shared and made public.

It is more than 40 years since Commonwealth education ministers began the series of triennial meetings that has evolved into the Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM). Launched in a period of international optimism, the ministers who gathered in Oxford in 1959 considered the prospects for the sharing of knowledge and experience across the emerging Commonwealth in a collegiate and non-contentious manner. In contrast the 15th CCEM, held in Edinburgh in late October 2003, was less consensual, more abrasive and factional, reflecting the international divisions between developed and developing world after the collapse of the international trade talks in Cancun. The impatience of member states from the developing countries with the lack of commitment to speedy solutions to their concerns from developed countries was obvious. Issues such as the systematic poaching of teachers—often trained with aid money—by developed nations and the Commonwealth’s status on the inclusion of education within the World Trade Organization General Agreement on Trade in Services highlighted the differences. The article presents information about the Twelfth International Congress of Psychology, which was scheduled to be held in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 22nd July to 27th July 1940. Arrangements are being made by which a large proportion of the members can be accommodated in University hostels. The inclusive charge for such accommodation would be about fifty shillings, excluding midday lunches, arrangements for which would be made elsewhere. When the Committee of Organization is fully constituted, formal invitations would be issued. It will, however, greatly facilitate arrangements if as many as possible would let the General Secretary know now that their attendance at the Congress is probable. In the meantime subjects for symposia, general discussion and lectures are under consideration by a Preliminary Arrangements Committee.
