Ocean heat storage is an essential component of the climate system and there is considerable interest in its accurate evaluation. There are a number of heat storage products produced by many different groups. These products are derived from Argo as well as other platforms, for example XBT and CTD, in the last decade. Here we compare two heat storage estimates for the North Atlantic 0-2000m from 10° to 70° N. One derived solely from Argo data whilst the other is derived from Argo and other platforms. It is found that there is a positive trend in heat storage over the period 1999- 2010. This trend is influenced by a strong air-sea interaction event in 2009-2010, and this reduces the upward trend 1999-2008 identified previously. Both data sets are consistent with each other for the layer 0-1000m on a timescale of beyond 1 yr. There are significant differences at sub-annual time scales and in the layer 1000-2000 m. Climatologies, or long-term averages, of essential climate variables are useful for evaluating models and providing a baseline for studying anomalies. The Surface Ocean Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Atlas (SOCAT) has made millions of global underway sea surface measurements of CO2 publicly available, all in a uniform format and presented as fugacity, fCO2. fCO2 is highly sensitive to temperature and the measurements are only valid for the instantaneous sea surface temperature (SST) that is measured concurrent with the in-water CO2 measurement. To create a climatology of fCO2 data suitable for calculating air-sea CO2 fluxes it is therefore desirable to calculate fCO2 valid for climate quality SST. This paper presents a method for creating such a climatology. We recomputed SOCAT's fCO2 values for their respective measurement month and year using climate quality SST data from satellite Earth observation and then extrapolated the resulting fCO2 values to reference year 2010. The data were then spatially interpolated onto a 1° × 1° grid of the global oceans to produce 12 monthly fCO2 distributions for 2010. The partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) is also provided for those who prefer to use pCO2. The CO2 concentration difference between ocean and atmosphere is the thermodynamic driving force of the air-sea CO2 flux, and hence the presented fCO2 distributions can be used in air-sea gas flux calculations together with climatologies of other climate variables. This paper presents theoretical foundations, numerical implementation and examples of application of a two-dimensional Discrete-Element bonded-particle Sea Ice model DESIgn. In the model, sea ice is represented as an assemblage of objects of two types: disk-shaped "grains", and semi-elastic bonds connecting them. Grains move on the sea surface under the influence of forces from the atmosphere and the ocean, as well as interactions with surrounding grains through a direct contact (Hertzian contact mechanics) and/or through bonds. The model has an option of taking into account quasi-three-dimensional effects related to space- and time-varying curvature of the sea surface, thus enabling simulation of ice breaking due to stresses resulting from bending moments associated with surface waves. Examples of the model's application to simple sea ice deformation and breaking problems are presented, with an analysis of the influence of the basic model parameters ("microscopic" properties of grains and bonds) on the large-scale response of the modeled material. The model is written as a toolbox suitable for usage with the open-source numerical library LIGGGHTS. It is commonly accepted that there is an urgent need for a better understanding of the factors that contribute to the air-sea interaction processes and their feedbacks. In this sense it is absolutely important to develop advanced numerical prediction systems that treat the atmosphere and the ocean as a unified system. The realistic description and understanding of the exchange processes near the ocean surface, requires the exact knowledge of the sea state and its evolution. This can be achieved by considering the sea surface and the atmosphere as a continuously cross talking dynamic system. Therefore, this study aims to present the effort towards developing a new, high resolution, two-way fully coupled atmosphere-ocean wave model in order to support operational and research activities. A specific issue that it is emphasized here is the determination and parameterization of the air-sea momentum fluxes under conditions of extremely high and time-varying winds. Software considerations, data exchange as well as computational and scientific performance of the coupled system, so-called WEW, are also discussed throughout this study. In a case study of high-impact weather and sea state event, the wind-wave parameterization scheme reduces the resulted wind speed and the significant wave height as a response to the increased aerodynamic drag over rough sea surfaces. Overall, WEW offers a more realistic representation of the momentum exchanges in the ocean wind-wave system and includes the effects of the resolved wave spectrum on the drag coefficient and its feedback on the momentum flux. We use an eddy-resolving, regional ocean biogeochemical model to investigate the main variables and processes responsible for the climatological spatio-temporal variability of pCO2 and the air-sea CO2 fluxes in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Overall, the region acts as sink of atmospheric CO2 south of 30° S, and is close to equilibrium with the atmospheric CO2 to the north. On the shelves, the ocean acts as a weak source of CO2, except for the mid/outer shelves of Patagonia, which act as sinks. In contrast, the inner shelves and the low latitude open ocean of the southwestern Atlantic represent source regions. Observed nearshore-to-offshore and meridional pCO2 gradients are well represented by our simulation. A sensitivity analysis shows the importance of the counteracting effects of temperature and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in controlling the seasonal variability of pCO2. Biological production and solubility are the main processes regulating pCO2, with biological production being particularly important on the shelf regions. The role of mixing/stratification in modulating DIC, and therefore surface pCO2 is shown in a vertical profile at the location of the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) site in the Argentine Basin (42° S, 42° W). The article presents a study which describe the Pliocene Model Intercomparison Project (PlioMIP) using the Hadley Centre Model both in atmosphere-ocean coupled mode and atmosphere-only mode. It states that a greater overall warming relative to the control than the atmosphere-only was predicted by the coupled model. The result of the study shows that a reduction in equatorial precipitation and south Asian monsoon was predicted by the atmospheric-only model.

A comparative study of simultaneous heat and gas exchange measurements was performed in the large annular Heidelberg Air-Sea Interaction Facility, the Aeolotron, under homogeneous water surface conditions. The use of two gas tracers, N2O and C2HF5, resulted not only in gas transfer velocities, but also in the measurement of the Schmidt number exponent n with a precision of ±0.025. The original controlled flux or active thermographic technique proposed by Jähne et al. (1989) was applied by heating a large patch at the water surface to measure heat transfer velocities. Heating a large patch, the active thermography technique is laterally homogeneous and problems of lateral transport effects are avoided. Using the measured Schmidt number exponents, the ratio of the scaled heat transfer velocities to the measured gas transfer velocities is 1.046±0.040, a good agreement within the limits of experimental uncertainties. This indicates the possibility to scale heat transfer velocities measured by active thermography to gas transfer velocities, provided the Schmidt number exponent is known and that the heated patch is large enough to reach the thermal equilibrium. We study the performances of (a) fully two-way coupled atmosphere-ocean modeling system and (b) one-way coupled ocean model (forced by the atmospheric model hourly output), as compared to the available in situ (mooring and CTD) measurements during and after an strong Bora wind event in February 2012, which led to extreme air-sea interactions and record breaking seawater cooling and dense water formation in Northern Adriatic. The simulations span the period between January and March 2012. The models used were ALADIN (4.4 km resolution) on the atmospheric side and Adriatic setup of POM (1°=301°=30 angular resolution) on the ocean side. The atmosphere-ocean coupling was implemented using the OASIS3-MCT model coupling toolkit. We show, using in situ seawater temperature measurements, that the two-way atmosphere-ocean coupling improves the ocean response to Bora because it captures transient Bora-induced cooling better than the one-way coupled version of the ocean model. We show that this difference stems mainly from an underestimation of air-sea temperature difference in one-way coupled system during the Bora episode, leading to an underestimation of sensible heat losses from the ocean in the one-way coupled system. We show these losses exhibit significant impact on baroclinic circulation on synoptic timescales. We use CTD observations in the Gulf of Trieste to show that when compared to the one-way setup, the two-way coupled system produces a similar estimation of salinities and density anomalies before the Bora episode, but a significantly better estimation of these quantities afterwards. With combined use of the ocean-atmosphere simulation models and field observation data, we evaluate the parameters associated with the total caesium-137 amounts of the direct release into the ocean and atmospheric deposition over the Western North Pacific caused by the accident of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (FNPP) that occurred in March 2011. The Green's function approach is adopted for the estimation of two parameters determining the total emission amounts for the period from 12 March to 6 May 2011. It is confirmed that the validity of the estimation depends on the simulation skill near FNPP. The total amount of the direct release is estimated as 5.5-5.9x1015 Bq, while that of the atmospheric deposition is estimated as 5.5-9.7x1015 Bq, which indicates broader range of the estimate than that of the direct release owing to uncertainty of the dispersion widely spread over the Western North Pacific. The sea surface microlayer (SML) is at the very surface of the ocean, linking the hydrosphere with the atmosphere, and central to a range of global biogeochemical and climate-related processes. The presence and enrichment of organic compounds in the SML have been suggested to influence air-sea gas exchange processes as well as the emission of primary organic aerosols. Among these organic compounds, primarily of plankton origin, are dissolved exopolymers, specifically polysaccharides and proteins, and gel particles, such as Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP) and Coomassie Stainable Particles (CSP). These organic substances often accumulate in the surface ocean when plankton productivity is high. Here, we report results obtained in December 2012 during the SOPRAN Meteor 91 cruise to the highly productive, coastal upwelling regime off Peru. Samples were collected from the SML and from ~ 20 cm below, and were analyzed for polysaccharidic and proteinaceous compounds, gel particles, total and dissolved organic carbon, bacterial and phytoplankton abundance. Our study provides insight to the physical and biological control of organic matter enrichment in the SML, and discusses the potential role of organic matter in the SML for air-sea exchange processes. The surface signature of the Agulhas rings propagating across the South Atlantic Ocean is observed based on 3 independent datasets: TMI/AMSR-E satellite sea surface temperature, Argo profiling floats and a merged winds product derived from scat- terometer observations and reanalysis results. A persistent pattern of cold (negative) SST anomalies in the eddy core, with warm (positive) anomalies at the boundary is revealed. This pattern contrasts with the classical idea of a warm core anti-cyclone. Taking advantage of a moving reference frame corresponding to the altimetry-detected Agulhas rings, modifications of the surface winds by the ocean induced currents and SST gradients are evaluated using satellite SST and wind observations. As obtained, the averaged stationary thermal expression and mean eddy-induced circulation are coupled to the marine atmospheric boundary layer, leading to surface wind anomalies. Consequently, an average Ekman pumping associated with these mean surface wind variations is consistently emerging. This average Ekman pumping is found to very well explain the SST anomaly signatures of the detected Agulhas rings. Particularly, this mechanism seems to be the key factor determining that these anti-cyclonic eddies exhibit stationary imprints of cold SST anomalies near their core centers. A residual phase with the maximum SSH anomaly and wind speed anomaly is found to the right of the mean wind direction, apparently maintaining a coherent stationary thermal ex pression coupled to the marine atmospheric boundary layer. Complex oceanic circulation and air--sea interaction make the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean (ETPO) a highly variable source of CO2 to the atmosphere. Although the scientific community have amassed 70 000 surface partial-pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) datapoints within the ETPO region over the past 25 years, the spatial and temporal resolution of this dataset is insufficient to fully quantify the seasonal to inter-annual variability of the region, a region where pCO2 has been observed to fluctuate by >300 µatm. Upwelling and rainfall events dominate the surface physical and chemical characteristics of the ETPO, with both yielding unique signatures in sea surface temperature and salinity. Thus, we explore the potential of using a statistical description of pCO2 within sea-surface salinity-temperature space. These SSS/SST relationships are based on in-situ SOCAT data collected within the ETPO. This statistical description is then applied to high resolution (0.25°) SMOS sea surface salinity and OSTIA sea surface temperature in order to compute regional pCO2. As a result, we are able to resolve pCO2 at sufficiently high resolution to elucidate the influence various physical processes have on the pCO2 of the surface ETPO. Normalised (to 2014) oceanic pCO2 between July 2010 and June 2014 within the entire ETPO was 41 µatm supersaturated with respect to 2014 atmospheric partial pressures. Values of pCO2 within the ETPO were found to be broadly split between southeast and a northwest regions. The north west, central and South Equatorial Current regions were supersaturated, with wintertime wind jet driven upwelling found to be the first order control on pCO2 values. This contrasts with the southeastern/Gulf of Panama region, where heavy rainfall combined with rapid stratification of the upper water-column act to dilute dissolved inorganic carbon, and yield pCO2 values under-saturated with respect to atmospheric partial pressures of CO2. Iron and light are the main factors limiting the biological pump of CO2 in the Southern Ocean. Iron fertilization experiments have demonstrated the potential for increased uptake of atmospheric CO2, but little is known about the evolution of fertilized environnements. This paper presents observations collected in one of the largest phytoplankton bloom of the Southern Ocean sustained by iron originating from the Kerguelen Plateau. We first complement previous studies by investigating the mechanisms that control air-sea CO2 fluxes over and downstream of the Kerguelen Plateau at the onset of the bloom based on measurements obtained in October-November 2011. These new observations show the rapid establishment of a strong CO2 sink in waters fertilized with iron as soon as vertical mixing is reduced. The magnitude of the CO2 sink was closely related to chlorophyll a and iron concentrations. Because iron concentration strongly depends on the distance from the iron source and the mode of delivery, we identified lateral advection as the main mechanism controlling air-sea CO2 fluxes downtream the Kerguelen Plateau during the growing season. In the southern part of the bloom, situated over the Plateau (iron source), the CO2 sink was stronger and spatially more homogeneous than in the plume offshore. However, we also witnessed a substantial reduction in the uptake of atmospheric CO2 over the Plateau following a strong winds event. Next, we used all the data available in this region in order to draw the seasonal evolution of air-sea CO2 fluxes. The CO2 sink is rapidly reduced during the course of the growing season, which we attribute to iron and silicic acid depletion. South of the Polar Front, where nutrients depletion is delayed, we suggest that the amplitude and duration of the CO2 sink is mainly controlled by vertical mixing. The impact of iron fertilization on air-sea CO2 fluxes is revealed by comparing the uptake of CO2 integrated over the productive season in the bloom, between 1 and 1.5 mol Cm-2 yr-1,and in the iron-poor HNLC waters, where we found a typical value of 0.4 mol Cm-2 yr-1. Extrapolating our results to the ice-free Southern Ocean (~ 50-60° S) suggests that iron fertilization of the whole area would increase the contemporay oceanic uptake of CO2 by less than 0.1 PgCyr-1, i.e., less than 1 % of the current anthropogenic CO2 emissions. The estimation of sea-air CO2 fluxes are largely dependent on wind speed through the gas transfer velocity parameterization. In this paper, we quantify uncertainties in the estimation of the CO2 uptake in the Bay of Biscay resulting from using different sources of wind speed such as three different global reanalysis meteorological models (NCEP/NCAR 1, NCEP/DOE 2 and ERA-Interim), one regional high-resolution forecast model (HIRLAM-AEMet) and Quik SCAT winds, in combination with some of the most widely used gas transfer velocity parameterizations. Results show that net CO2 flux estimations during an entire seasonal cycle may differ up to 240% depending on the wind speed product and the gas exchange parameterization. The comparison of satellite and model derived winds with observations at buoys advises against the systematic overestimation of NCEP-2 and the underestimation of NCEP-1. In this region, Quik SCAT has the best performing, although ERA-Interim becomes the best choice in areas near the coastline or when the time resolution is the constraint. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A set of meteorological instruments was added to an oceanographic cruise crossing the Southern Ocean from Cape Town to 57°330 S on board the R/V Marion Dufresne during the summer 2008. The Cape Cauldron, the subtropical, subantarctic, polar and south- ern Antarctic circumpolar current fronts were successively crossed. The recorded data permitted to derive the exchange of momentum, heat and water vapour at the oceanatmosphere interface. A set of 38 radiosonde releases complemented the dataset. The marine atmospheric boundary layer characteristics and air-sea interaction when ship crossed the fronts and eddies are discussed. The specific role of the atmospheric synoptic systems advection on the air-sea interaction is highlighted over these regions. The dynamic associated with these systems drive the vertical mixing of the MABL by wind shear effect and/or the vertical thermal mixing. The MABL is stabilized (destabilized) and mixing is inhibited (enhanced) over the warm front sides if meridional wind component is northerly (southerly). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents an analysis of the result and set-ups of experiments proposed in Pliocene Model Intercomparison Project (PiloMIP) through the utilization of a global climate model, MRI-CGCM2.3. Coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (AOGCM) and its atmospheric component (AGCM) is applied in the experiments. A comparison of the major characteristics of the differences in the simulated mid-Pliocene climate relative to the pre-industrial integrations is discussed.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) concentration in air of the central and eastern Mediterranean in summer 2010 was 1.45 (0.30-3.25) ngm-3, with ≈ 8% in the particulate phase, associated with particles< 0.25 µm. The diffusive air-sea exchange fluxes of fluoranthene and pyrene were mostly found net-depositional or close to phase equilibrium, while retene was net-volatilisational in a large sea region. Regional fire activity records in combination with box model simulations suggest that seasonal depositional input of retene from biomass burning into the surface waters during summer is followed by an annual reversal of air-sea exchange, while inter-annual variability is dominated by the variability of the fire season. It is concluded that future negative emission trends or interannual variability of regional sources may trigger the sea to become a secondary PAH source through reversal of diffusive air-sea exchange. In a pilot study conducted in October and November 2011, air-sea gas transfer velocities of the two sparingly soluble trace gases hexafluorobenzene and 1,4- difluorobenzene were measured in the unique High-Speed Wind-Wave Tank at Kyoto University, Japan. This air-sea interaction facility is capable of producing hurricane strength wind speeds of up to u10 = 67ms-1. This constitutes the first lab study of gas transfer at such high wind speeds. The measured transfer velocities k600 spanned two orders of magnitude, lying between 11 cmh-1 and 1180 cmh-1 with the latter being the highest ever measured wind induced gas transfer velocity. The measured gas transfer velocities are in agreement with the only available dataset at hurricane wind speeds (McNeil and D'Asaro, 2007). The disproportionately large increase of the transfer velocities found at highest wind speeds indicates a new regime of air-sea gas transfer, which is characterized by strong wave breaking, enhanced turbulence and bubble cloud entrainment. It was found that tracers spanning a wide range of solubilities and diffu sivities are needed to separate the effects of enhanced surface area and turbulence due to breaking waves from the effects of bubble and spray mediated gas transfer. From January 2011 to December 2013, we constructed a comprehensive pCO2 dataset based on voluntary observing ship (VOS) measurements in the Western English Channel (WEC). We subsequently estimated surface pCO2 and air-sea CO2 fluxes in north-west European continental shelf waters using multiple linear regressions (MLRs) from remotely sensed sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a), the gas transfer velocity coefficient (K), photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and modeled mixed layer depth (MLD). We developed specific MLRs for the seasonally stratified northern WEC (nWEC) and the permanently well-mixed southern WEC (sWEC) and calculated surface pCO2 with relative uncertainties of 17 and 16 µ atm, respectively. We extrapolated the relationships obtained for the WEC based on the 2011-2013 dataset (1) temporally over a decade and (2) spatially in the adjacent Celtic and Irish Seas (CS and IS), two regions which exhibit hydrographical and biogeochemical characteristics similar to those of WEC waters. We validated these extrapolations with pCO2 data from the SOCAT database and obtained relatively robust results with an average precision of 4_22 µatm in the seasonally stratified nWEC and the southern and northern CS (sCS and nCS), but less promising results in the permanently well-mixed sWEC, IS and Cap Lizard (CL) waters. On an annual scale, seasonally stratified systems acted as a sink of CO2 from the atmosphere of -0.4, -0.9 and -0.4 mol C m-2 year-1 in the nCS, sCS and nWEC, respectively, whereas, permanently well-mixed systems acted as source of CO2 to the atmosphere of 0.2, 0.4 and 0.4 mol C m-2 year-1 in the sWEC, CL and IS, respectively. Air-sea CO2 fluxes showed important inter-annual variability resulting in significant differences in the intensity and/or direction of annual fluxes. We scaled the mean annual fluxes over six provinces for the last decade and obtained the first annual average uptake of -0.95 Tg C year-1 for this part of the north-western European continental shelf. Our study showed that combining VOS data with satellite observations can be a powerful tool to estimate and extrapolate air-sea CO2 fluxes in sparsely sampled area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We provide a new determination of the annual mean physical supply of nitrate to the euphotic zone in the western subtropical North Atlantic based on a three year time-series of measurements of tritiugenic ³He from 2003 to 2006 in the surface ocean at the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) site. We combine the ³He data with a sophisticated noble gas calibrated air-sea gas exchange model to constrain the³He flux across the sea-air interface, which must closely balance the upward ³He flux into the euphotic zone. The product of the ³He flux and the observed subsurface nitrate-³He relationship provides an estimate of the minimum rate of new production in the BATS region. We also applied the gas model to an earlier time series of ³He measurements at BATS in order to recalculate new production fluxes for the 1985 to 1988 time period. The observations, despite an almost three-fold difference in the nitrate-³He relationship, yield a roughly consistent estimate of nitrate flux. In particular, the nitrate flux from 2003-2006 is estimated to be 0.65 ± 0.3 mol m-2 y-1, which is ~ 40% smaller than the calculated flux for the period from 1985 to 1988. The difference between the time periods, which is barely significant, may be due to a real difference in new production resulting from changes in subtropical mode water formation. Overall, the nitrate flux is larger than most estimates of export fluxes or net community production fluxes made locally for BATS site, which is likely a reflection of the larger spatial scale covered by the ³He technique and potentially also by decoupling of ³He and nitrate during obduction of water masses from the main thermocline into the upper ocean. Relationships between solar activity and climate in the North Atlantic region have long been reported and, more recently, mechanisms have been proposed to explain these. Normally such relationships are tested over decadal time scales. Here, daily sea surface temperature fields bridging the period of exceptionally low solar activity between solar cycles 23 and 24 have been analysed. The day-to-day variability of the fields has been measured and the fields have been classified, using cluster analysis. The main water masses are clearly expressed, together with detail of their interactions. Three features relate to the level of solar activity. First, there is a statistically significant difference in the day-to-day variability of the sea surface temperature field between the period of lowest solar activity and the remaining periods. Second, during the transition from summer to winter, there are systematic, inter-annual changes in the day-to-day variability of the sea surface temperature field. Third, the forms of the late summer temperature fields exhibit symmetry about the years of lowest solar activity. These features are attributable to variability in the passage of weather systems. The influence on North Atlantic surface climate of variations in the solar ultraviolet band acting through the stratosphere has been reported in a number of studies. To address the issue of poor accuracy in typhoon wind data, this paper presents a methodology for the calibration of typhoon wind data while conducting an analysis and evaluation of the associated uncertainties. The approach commences with the introduction of two wind field data calculation models. The first model facilitates the correction of buoy attitude, thereby transforming inaccurate buoy wind speed data into real-speed data. In parallel, the second model enables the conversion of buoy-observed true velocity into neutral stable stratified wind parameters, leveraging satellite-derived data for precise calculations. Subsequently, the paper undertakes the task of spatio-temporal alignment between buoy data and satellite observations. Ultimately, a comprehensive comparative analysis is conducted by juxtaposing the ERA5 database with data collected from a moored buoy equipped with the R.M. YOUNG wind monitor. A new simulation method for satellite wind speed data inversion is proposed, and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed calibration method in enhancing the accuracy of typhoon wind field data. In particular, the maximum wind speeds recorded were 20.15 m s−1 and 13.22 m s−1 during Typhoon "Jangmi (202005)" and "Maysak (202009)," respectively. Furthermore, the mean square errors (MSE) for our method were measured at 0.31 m s−1 and 0.28 m s−1, outperforming the satellite-derived indicators. The expanded uncertainty of measurement results for the two typhoons was calculated at 0.39 m s−1 and 0.34 m s−1, closely aligning with the MSE values. These computational models present a valuable means of enhancing the precision and reducing uncertainty in satellite-derived data. The findings presented in this paper hold great promise for applications in typhoon forecasting, investigations of air-sea interactions, and disaster prevention and mitigation efforts. The accurate parameterisation of momentum and heat transfer across the air-sea interface is vital for realistic simulation of the atmosphere-ocean system. In many modelling applications accurate representation of the wind stress is required to numerically reproduce surge, coastal ocean circulation, surface waves, turbulence and mixing. Different formulations can be implemented and impact the accuracy of: the instantaneous and long-term residual circulation; the surface mixed layer; and the generation of wavesurge conditions. This, in turn, affects predictions of storm impact, sediment pathways, and coastal resilience to climate change. The specific numerical formulation needs careful selection to ensure the accuracy of the simulation. Two wind stress formulae widely used in respectively the ocean circulation and the storm surge communities are studied with focus on an application to the NW region of the UK. Model-observation validation is performed at two nearshore and one estuarine ADCP stations in Liverpool Bay, a hypertidal region of freshwater influence with vast intertidal areas. The period of study covers both calm and extreme conditions to fully test the robustness of the 10m wind stress component of the Common Ocean Reference Experiment (CORE) bulk formulae and the Charnock relation. In this coastal application a realistic barotropicbaroclinic simulation of the circulation and surge elevation is setup, demonstrating greater accuracy occurs when using the Charnock relation for surface wind stress. Uncertainty in the air-sea CO2 exchange (CO2 flux) in coastal upwelling zones is attributed to high temporal variability, which is caused by changes in ocean currents. Upwelling transports heterotrophic, CO2 enriched water to the surface and releases CO2 to the atmosphere, whereas the presence of nutrient-rich water at the surface supports high primary production and atmospheric CO2 uptake. To quantify the effects of upwelling on CO2 fluxes, we measured CO2 flux at a coastal upwelling site off of Bodega Bay, California, during the summer of 2007 and the fall of 2008 using the eddy covariance technique and the bulk method with pCO2 measurements from November 2010 to July 2011. Variations in sea surface temperatures (SST) and alongshore wind speeds suggest that the measurement period in 2007 coincided with a typical early-summer upwelling period and the measurement period in 2008 was during a typical fall relaxation period. A strong source of CO2 (~ 1.5±7 SD (standard deviation) gCm-2 day-1) from the ocean to the atmosphere during the upwelling period was concurrent with high salinity, low SST, and low chlorophyll density. In contrast, a weak source of CO2 flux (~ 0.2±3SDgCm-2 day-1) was observed with low salinity, high SST and high chlorophyll density during the relaxation period. Similarly, the sink and source balance of CO2 flux was highly related to salinity and SST during the pCO2 measurement periods; high salinity and low SST corresponded to high pCO2, and vice versa. We estimated that the coastal area off Bodega Bay was likely a source of CO2 to the atmosphere based on the following conclusions: (1) the overall CO2 flux estimated from both eddy covariance and pCO2 measurements showed a source of CO2; (2) although the relaxation period during the 2008 measurements were favorable to CO2 uptake, CO2 flux during this period was still a slight source, (3) salinity and SST were found to be good predictors of the CO2 flux for both eddy covariance and pCO2 measurements, and historical data of daily averaged SST and salinity between 1988 to 2011 show that 99% of the data falls within the range of our observation in May-June 2007, August-September 2008 and November 2010-July 2011 indicating that our data set was representative of the annual variations in the sea state. Based on the developed relationship between pCO2 and SST and salinity, the average annual CO2 flux between 1988 and 2011 was estimated to be ~ 35molCm-2 yr-1. Coccolithophores are the primary oceanic phytoplankton responsible for the production of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). These climatically important plankton play a key role in the oceanic carbon cycle as a major contributor of carbon to the open ocean carbonate pump (~50 %) and their formation can affect the atmosphere-to-ocean (air- sea) uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) through increasing the seawater partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2). Here we document variations in the areal extent of surface blooms of the globally important coccolithophore, Emiliania huxleyi, in the North Atlantic over a 10-year period (1998-2007), using Earth observation data from the Sea-viewing Wide Field of view Sensor (SeaWiFS).We calculate the annual mean surface areal coverage of E. huxleyi in the North Atlantic to be 474 000±119 000 km² yr-1, which results in a net CaCO3 production of 0.62±0.15 Tg CaCO3 carbon per year. However, this surface coverage and net production can fluctuate by -54/+81% about these mean values and are strongly correlated with the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate oscillation index (r =0.75, p<0.02). Our analysis evaluates the spatial extent over which the E. huxleyi blooms in the North Atlantic can increase the pCO2 and thus decrease the localised sink of atmospheric CO2. In regions where the blooms are prevalent, the average reduction in the monthly CO2 sink can reach 12 %. The maximum reduction of the monthly CO2 sink in the time series is 32 %. This work suggests that the high variability, frequency and distribution of these calcifying plankton and their impact on pCO2 should be considered within modelling studies of the North Atlantic if we are to fully understand the variability of its air-to-sea CO2 flux. We assess the role of riverine inputs of N, Si, Fe, organic and inorganic C in the tropical Atlantic Ocean using a global ocean biogeochemistry model. We use two sensitivity tests to investigate the role of the western (South American Rivers) and eastern (African Rivers) riverine nutrient inputs on the tropical Atlantic Ocean biogeochemistry (between 20° S-20° N and 70° W-20°). Increased nutrient availability from river inputs in this area (compared to an extreme scenario with no river nutrients) leads to an increase in 14% (0.7 PgCa-1) in open ocean primary production (PP), and 21% (0.2 PgCa-1) in coastal ocean PP. We estimate very modest increases in open and coastal ocean export production and sea-air CO2 fluxes. Results suggest that in the tropical Atlantic Ocean, the large riverine nutrient inputs on the western side have a larger impact on primary production and sea-air CO2 exchanges. On the other hand, African river inputs, although smaller than South American inputs, have larger impact on the coastal and open tropical Atlantic Ocean export production. This is probably due to a combination of nutrient trapping in upwelling areas off the Congo River outflow, and differences in delivered nutrient ratios leading to alleviation in limitation conditions mainly for diatoms. Sea ice motion (SIM) has significant implications for sea–air interactions, thermohaline circulation, and the development of the Arctic passage. This research proposes an improved SIM retrieval method from Fengyun-3D's (FY-3D) microwave radiometer imager's (MWRI) brightness temperature (Tb) data based on the modified classical maximum cross-correlation (MCC) method and the multisource data merging method. This study utilized buoy data to establish the search area range, applied distinct thresholds across various Arctic regions, and merged the buoy data, reanalysis wind data, and SIM retrieved from FY-3D/MWRI Tb data. In 2019, for the final Arctic SIM results retrieved from the MWRI 89 GHz and 36.5 GHz Tb data, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) and the mean average error (MAE) in the east–west direction were 2.07 cm/s and 1.38 cm/s and those in the north–south direction were 1.96 cm/s and 1.15 cm/s, compared to the ice-tethered profiler (ITP) data. Compared with the daily average data of the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), the RMSE and MAE of the SIM results obtained in this study were 0.74 cm/s and 0.93 cm/s in the east–west direction, and 0.56 cm/s and 0.72 cm/s in the north–south direction, respectively. The monthly average of the SIM retrieved from the MWRI Tb data in this research also showed a good agreement with the monthly average of the NSIDC SIM product. The comparison showed that the MWRI Tb data could be used to retrieve the Arctic SIM, and the Arctic SIM retrieval method presented in this paper was accurate and general. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Indian Ocean (44° S-30° N) plays an important role in the global carbon cycle, yet remains one of the most poorly sampled ocean regions. Several approaches have been used to estimate net sea-air CO2 fluxes in this region: interpolated observations, ocean biogeochemical models, atmospheric and ocean inversions. As part of the RECCAP (REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes) project, we combine these different approaches to quantify and assess the magnitude and variability in Indian Ocean sea-air CO2 fluxes between 1990 and 2009. Using all of the models and inversions, the median annual mean sea-air CO2 uptake of -0.37 ± 0.06 PgCyr-1, is consistent with the -0.24 ± 0.12 PgCyr-1 calculated from observations. The fluxes from the Southern Indian Ocean (18°S-44°S; -0.43±0.07PgCyr-1) are similar in magnitude to the annual uptake for the entire Indian Ocean. All models capture the observed pattern of fluxes in the Indian Ocean with the following exceptions: underestimation of upwelling fluxes in the northwestern region (off Oman and Somalia), over estimation in the northeastern region (Bay of Bengal) and underestimation of the CO2 sink in the subtropical convergence zone. These differences were mainly driven by a lack of atmospheric CO2 data in atmospheric inversions, and poor simulation of monsoonal currents and freshwater discharge in ocean biogeochemical models. Overall, the models and inversions do capture the phase of the observed seasonality for the entire Indian Ocean but over estimate the magnitude. The predicted sea-air CO2 fluxes by Ocean BioGeochemical Models (OBGM) respond to seasonal variability with strong phase lags with reference to climatological CO2 flux, whereas the atmospheric inversions predict an order of magnitude higher seasonal flux than OBGMs. The simulated interannual variability by the OBGMs is weaker than atmospheric inversions. Prediction of such weak interannual variability in CO2 fluxes by atmospheric inversions was mainly caused by lack of atmospheric data in the Indian Ocean. The OBGM models suggest a small strengthening of the sink over the period 1990-2009 of -0.01 PgCdecade-1. This is inconsistent with the observations in the southwest Indian Ocean that shows the growth rate of oceanic pCO2 was faster than the observed atmospheric CO2 growth, a finding attributed to the trend of the Southern Annual Mode (SAM) during the 1990s. The air-sea exchanges of CO2 in the world's 165 estuaries and 87 continental shelves are evaluated. Generally and in all seasons, upper estuaries with salinities of less than two are strong sources of CO2 (39±56 mol Cm-2 yr-1, negative flux indicates that the water is losing CO2 to the atmosphere); mid-estuaries with salinities of between 2 and 25 are moderate sources (17.5±34 mol Cm-2 yr-1) and lower estuaries with salinities of more than 25 are weak sources (8.4±14 mol Cm-2 yr-1). With respect to latitude, estuaries between 23.5 and 50 °N have the largest flux per unit area (63±101 mmol Cm-2 d-1); these are followed by mid-latitude estuaries (23.5- 0°S: 44±29 mmol Cm-2 d-1; 0-23.5 °N: 39±55 mmol Cm-2 d-1), and then regions north of 50°N (36±91 mmol Cm-2 d-1). Estuaries south of 50°S have the smallest flux per unit area (9.5±12 mol Cm-2 d-1). Mixing with low-pCO2 shelf waters, water temperature, residence time and the complexity of the biogeochemistry are major factors that govern the pCO2 in estuaries but wind speed, seldom discussed, is critical to controlling the air-water exchanges of CO2. The total annual release of CO2 from the world's estuaries is now estimated to be 0.10 PgC yr-1, which is much lower than published values mainly because of the contribution of a considerable amount of heretofore unpublished or new data from Asia and the Arctic. The Asian data, although indicating high in pCO2, are low in sea-to-air fluxes because the wind speeds are lower than previously determined values, which rely heavily on data from Europe and North America, where pCO2 is lower but wind speeds are much higher, such that the CO2 fluxes are higher than in Asia. Newly emerged CO2 flux data in the Arctic reveal that estuaries there mostly absorb, rather than release CO2. Most continental shelves, and especially those at high latitude, are under-saturated in terms of CO2 and absorb CO2 from the atmosphere in all seasons. Shelves between 0° and 23.5°S are on average a weak source and have a small flux per unit area of CO2 to the atmosphere. Water temperature, the spreading of river plumes, upwelling, and biological production seem to be the main factors in determining pCO2 in the shelves. Wind speed, again, is critical because at high latitudes, the winds tend to be strong. Since the surface water pCO2 values are low, the air-to-sea fluxes are high in regions above 50°N and below 50°S. At low latitudes, the winds tend to be weak, so the sea-to-air CO2 flux is small. We present a simple method to generate a perturbed parameter ensemble (PPE) of a fully-coupled atmosphere-ocean general circulation model (AOGCM), HadCM3, without requiring flux-adjustment. The aim was to produce an ensemble that samples parametric uncertainty in some key variables and displays a similar range of behavior as seen in multi-model ensembles (MMEs). Six atmospheric parameters, a sea-ice parameter and an ocean parameter were jointly perturbed within a reasonable range to generate an initial group of 200 members. To screen out implausible ensemble members, 20 yr pre-industrial control simulations were run and members whose tempera10 ture response to the parameter perturbations was projected to be outside the range of 13.6±2 °C, i.e. near to the observed pre-industrial global mean, were discarded. 21 members, including the standard unperturbed model, were accepted, covering almost the entire span of the eight parameters, challenging the argument that without fluxadjustment parameter ranges would be unduly restricted. This ensemble was used in 3 experiments; a 800 yr pre-industrial, a 150 yr quadrupled CO2, and a 150 yr 1% CO2 rise per annum simulation. The behavior of the PPE for the pre-industrial control compared well to the CMIP3 ensemble for a number of surface and atmospheric column variables with the exception of a few members in the Tropics. However, we find that members of the PPE with low values of the entrainment rate coefficient show very large increases in upper tropospheric and stratospheric water vapor concentrations in response to elevated CO2 and some show implausibly high climate sensitivities, and as such some of these members will be excluded from future experiments with this ensemble. The outcome of this study is a PPE of a fully-coupled AOGCM which samples parametric uncertainty with a range of behavior similar to the CMIP3 ensemble and a simple methodology which would be applicable to other GCMs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Estimates of the anthropogenic global-integrated sea-air carbon dioxide (CO2) flux from 1990 to 2009, based on different models and measurements, range from -1.4 to -2.6 PgCyr-1 . The median values of anthropogenic CO2 for each method show better agreement and are: -1.9 for PgCyr-1 for numerical ocean general circulation hind cast models (OGCMs) with parameterized biogeochemistry; -2.1 PgCyr-1 for atmospheric inverse models; -1.9 PgCyr-1 for global atmospheric constraints based on O2 /N2 ratios for 1990-2000; and -2.4 PgCyr-1 for oceanic inverse models. An updated estimate of this anthropogenic CO2 flux based on a climatology of sea-air partial pressure of CO2 differences (ΔpCO2) (Takahashi et al., 2009) and a bulk formulation of gas transfer with wind speed for year 2000 is -2.0 PgCyr-1 . Using this ΔpCO2 climatology and empirical relationships of pCO2 with sea-surface temperature (SST) anomalies (Park et al., 2010a), the interannual variability of the contemporary CO2 flux is estimated to be 0.20 PgCyr-1 (1σ) from 1990 through 2009. This is similar to the variability estimated by the OGCMs of 0.16 PgCyr-1 but smaller than the interannual variability from atmospheric inverse estimates of 0.40 PgCyr-1. The variability is largely driven by large-scale climate re-organizations. The decadal trends for different methods range from -0.13 (PgCyr-1) decade-1 to -0.50 (PgCyr-1) decade-1. The OGCMs and the data based sea-air CO2 flux estimates show smaller uptakes and appreciably smaller decadal trends than estimates based on changes in carbon inventory suggesting that methods capable of resolving shorter timescales are showing a slowing of the rate of ocean CO2 uptake. The Atlantic and Arctic oceans are critical components of the global carbon cycle. Here we quantify the net sea-air CO2 flux, for the first time, across different methodologies for consistent time and space scales, for the Atlantic and Arctic basins. We present the long-term mean, seasonal cycle, interannual variability and trends in sea-air CO2 flux for the period 1990 to 2009, and assign an uncertainty to each. We use regional cuts from global observations and modelling products, specifically a pCO2- based CO2 flux climatology, flux estimates from the inversion of oceanic and atmospheric data, and results from six ocean biogeochemical models. Additionally, we use basin-wide flux estimates from surface ocean pCO2 observations based on two distinct methodologies. Our best estimate of the contemporary sea-to-air flux of CO2 (sum of anthropogenic and natural components) by the Atlantic between 40° S and 79° N is -0.49±0.11 PgCyr -1 and by the Arctic is -0.12±0.06 PgCyr -1 , leading to a combined sea-to-air flux of -0.61±0.12 PgCyr -1 for the two decades (negative reflects ocean uptake). We do find broad agreement amongst methodologies with respect to the seasonal cycle in the subtropics of both hemispheres, but not elsewhere. Agreement with respect to detailed signals of interannual variability is poor; and correlations to the North Atlantic Oscillation are weaker in the North Atlantic and Arctic than in the equatorial region and South Subtropics. Linear trends for 1995 to 2009 indicate increased uptake and generally correspond between methodologies in the North Atlantic, but there is disagreement amongst methodologies in the equatorial region and South Subtropics. The article discusses a study on the biogeochemical and dynamical control on ocean carbon fluxes decadal variability. The study involves the use of a 1000-year long preindustrial simulation with the Earth 10 System Model IPSL-CM5A-LR to analyze the internal variability of ocean carbon fluxes. It reveals that low-frequency oscillations exhibited by the ocean carbon fluxes that emerge from annual variability in North Pacific, Southern Ocean, and North Atlantic.

A surface to bottom North-East Atlantic Ocean budget for mass, nutrients (nitrate and phosphate) and oxygen is determined using an optimization method based on climatological data from the World Ocean Atlas 2009 and three surveys of the OVIDE transect (from Greenland to Portugal). Budgets are derived for two communicating boxes representing the North Eastern European Basin (NEEB) and the Irminger Sea. For the NEEB (Irminger) box, it is found that 30% of the mass import (export) across the OVIDE section reach (originate from) the Nordic Seas while 70% is redistributed between both boxes through the Reykjanes Ridge (9.3 ± 0.7 x 109 kg s-1). Net biological source/sink terms of nitrate point to both the Irminger and NEEB boxes as net organic matter production sites (consumming nitrate at a rate of -7.8 ± 6.5 kmol s-1 and -8.4 ± 6.6 kmol s-1 respectively). Using a standard Redfield ratio of C:N= 106:16, nitrate consumption rates indicate that about 40 TgC yr-1 of carbon is fixed by organic matter production between the OVIDE transect and the Greenland-Scotland Ridge. Nutrients fluxes also induce a net biological production of oxygen of 73 ± 60 kmol s-1 and 79 ± 62 kmol s-1 in the Irminger and NEEB boxes which points to the region as being autotrophic. Air-sea oxygen fluxes show an oceanic oxygen uptake in the two regions (264 ± 66 kmol s-1 in the north and 443 ± 70 kmol s-1 in the south), dominated by the abiotic component. The abiotic flux is partitionned into a mixing and a thermal components. It is found that the Irminger Sea oceanic oxygen uptake is driven by an air-sea heat flux cooling increasing the ocean surface oxygen solubility. Over the North Eastern European Basin the mixing component is about half the thermal flux, presumably because of the oxygen minimum in the subtropical thermocline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper we clearly demonstrate that changes in oceanic nutrients are a first order factor in determining changes in the primary production of the northwest European continental shelf on time scales of 5-10 yr. We present a series of coupled hydrodynamic ecosystem modelling simulations, using the POLCOMS-ERSEM system. These are forced by both re-analysis data and a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model (OA-GCM) representative of possible conditions in 2080-2100 under an SRES A1B emissions scenario, along with the corresponding present day control. The OA-GCM forced simulations show a substantial reduction in surface nutrients in the open-ocean regions of the model domain, comparing future and present day time-slices. This arises from a large increase in oceanic stratification. Tracer transport experiments identify a substantial fraction of on-shelf water originates from the open-ocean region in the south of the domain, where this increase is largest, and indeed the on-shelf nutrient and primary production are reduced as this water is transported on shelf. This relationship is confirmed quantitatively by comparing changes in winter nitrate with total annual nitrate uptake. The reduction in primary production by the reduced nutrient transport is mitigated by on-shelf processes relating to temperature, stratification (length of growing season) and recycling. Regions less exposed to ocean-shelf exchange in this model (Celtic Sea, Irish Sea, English Channel, and southern North Sea) show a modest increase in primary production (of 5-10 %) compared with a decrease of 0-20% in the outer shelf, central and northern North Sea. The article provides information on the ECHAM/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) model which is coupled to the ocean general circulation (GCM) model MPIOM using the Modular Earth Submodel Sytem (MESSy) interface. It reveals that the coupling method is tested for different model configurations, proving to be very flexible in terms of parallel decomposition. In addition, the climate model simulation (CMIP3) performed with EMAC-MPIOM show that the results are comparable to those of other GCM.

Improving the prediction of clouds in shallow-cumulus regimes via turbulence parameterization in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) will likely increase the global skill of global climate models (GCMs) because this cloud regime is common over tropical oceans where low-cloud fraction has a large impact on Earth's radiative budget. This study attempts to improve the prediction of PBL structure in tropical trade wind regimes in the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) by updating its formulation of momentum flux in CLUBB (Cloud Layers Unified by Binormals), which currently does not by default allow for upgradient momentum fluxes. Hindcast CAM output from custom CLUBB configurations which permit countergradient momentum fluxes are compared to in situ observations from weather balloons collected during the ElUcidating the RolE of Cloud–Circulation Coupling in ClimAte and Atlantic Tradewind Ocean–Atmosphere Mesoscale Interaction Campaign (EUREC 4 A/ATOMIC) field campaign in the tropical Atlantic in early 2020. Comparing a version with CAM–CLUBB with a prognostic treatment of momentum fluxes results in vertical profiles that better match large-eddy simulation results. Countergradient fluxes are frequently simulated between 950 and 850 hPa over the EUREC 4 A/ATOMIC period in CAM–CLUBB. Further modification to the planetary boundary layer (PBL) parameterization by implementing a more generalized calculation of the turbulent length scale reduces model bias and root mean squared error (RMSE) relative to sounding data when coupled with the prognostic momentum configuration. Benefits are also seen in the diurnal cycle, although more systematic model errors persist. A cursory budget analysis suggests the buoyant production of momentum fluxes, both above and below the jet maximum, significantly contributes to the frequency and depth of countergradient vertical momentum fluxes in the study region. This paper provides evidence that higher-order turbulence parameterizations may offer pathways for improving the simulation of trade wind regimes in global models, particularly when evaluated in a process study framework. The accelerated decline in Arctic sea ice combined with an ongoing trend toward a more dynamic atmosphere is modifying carbon cycling in the Arctic Ocean. A critical issue is to understand how net community production (NCP; the balance between gross primary production and community respiration) responds to changes and modulates air--sea CO2 fluxes. Using data collected as part of the ArcticNet-Malina 2009 expedition in southeastern Beaufort Sea (Arctic Ocean), we synthesize information on sea ice, wind, river, water column properties, metabolism of the planktonic food web, organic carbon fluxes and pools, as well as air--sea CO2 exchange, with the aim of identifying indices of ecosystem response to environmental changes. Data were analyzed to develop a non-steady-state carbon budget and an assessment of NCP against air--sea CO2 fluxes. The mean atmospheric forcing was a mild upwelling-favorable wind (~5 kmh-1) blowing from the N-E and a decaying ice cover (<80% concentration) was observed beyond the shelf, the latter being fully exposed to the atmosphere. We detected some areas where the surface mixed layer was net autotrophic owing to high rates of primary production (PP), but the ecosystem was overall net heterotrophic. The region acted nonetheless as a sink for atmospheric CO2 with a mean uptake rate of -2.0±3.3 mmolCm-2 d-1. We attribute this discrepancy to: (1) elevated PP rates (> 600mgCm-2 d-1) over the shelf prior to our survey, (2) freshwater dilution by river runoff and ice melt, and (3) the presence of cold surface waters offshore. Only the Mackenzie River delta and localized shelf areas directly affected by upwelling were identified as substantial sources of CO2 to the atmosphere (> 10 mmolCm-2 d-1). Although generally <100mgCm-2 d-1, daily PP rates cumulated to a total PP of ~437.6x10³ tC, which was roughly twice higher than the organic carbon delivery by river inputs (~241.2 x 10³ tC). Subsurface PP represented 37.4% of total PP for the whole area and as much as ~72.0% seaward of the shelf break. In the upper 100 m, bacteria dominated (54 %) total community respiration (~250mgCm-2 d-1), whereas protozoans, metazoans, and benthos, contributed to 24 %, 10 %, and 12 %, respectively. The range of production-to-biomass ratios of bacteria was wide (1-27%d-1), while we estimated a narrower range for protozoans (6-11%d-1) and metazoans (1-3%d-1). Over the shelf, benthic biomass was twice higher (~5.9 gCm-2) than the biomass of pelagic heterotrophs (~2.4 gCm-2), in accord with high vertical carbon fluxes on the shelf (956±129mgCm-2 d-1). Threshold PP (PP at which NCP becomes positive) in the surface layer oscillated from 20-152mgCm-2 d-1, with a pattern from low-to-high values as the distance from the Mackenzie River decreased. We conclude that: (1) climate change is exacerbating the already extreme biological gradient across the Arctic shelf-basin system; (2) the Mackenzie Shelf acts as a weak sink for atmospheric CO2, implying that PP exceeds the respiration of terrigenous and marine organic matter in the surface layer; and (3) shelf break upwelling can transfer CO2 to the atmosphere, but massive outgassing can be attenuated if nutrients brought also by upwelling support diatom production. Our study underscores that cross-shelf exchange of waters, nutrients and particles is a key mechanism that needs to be properly monitored as the Arctic transits to a new state. Sensitivities of the oceanic biological pump within the GISS climate modeling system are explored here. Results are presented from twin control simulations of the air-sea CO2 gas exchange using two different ocean models coupled to the same atmosphere. The two ocean models (Russell ocean model and Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model, HY- COM) use different vertical coordinate systems, and therefore different representations of column physics. Both variants of the GISS climate model are coupled to the same ocean biogeochemistry module (the NASA Ocean Biogeochemistry Model, NOBM) which computes prognostic distributions for biotic and abiotic fields that influence the air-sea flux of CO2 and the deep ocean carbon transport and storage. In particular, the model differences due to remineralization rate changes are compared to differences attributed to physical processes modeled differently in the two ocean models such as ventilation, mixing, eddy stirring and vertical advection. The Southern Ocean emerges as a key region where the CO2 flux is as sensitive to biological parameterizations as it is to physical parameterizations. Mixing in the Southern Ocean is shown to be a good indicator of the magnitude of the biological pump efficiency regardless of physical model choice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In spite of massive efforts directed to development of climate models over recent decades, accurate climate simulations and prediction remain a grand challenge. Large sea surface temperature model bias is one of the key indicators of the problem, among others. Qiao and his team suggested the concept of surface wave‐induced turbulence and elaborated the way for such coupling, through turbulent processes at both sides of the air‐ocean interface. These are the wave mixing in the ocean and wave modulation of air‐sea fluxes. This wave‐ocean coupled approach led to essential improvements of performance of ocean circulation and climate models, essentially introducing the next generation of large‐scale air‐sea interaction models. This Commentary reviews three recent JGR publications where the Qiao theory was implemented. The first paper (Huang & Qiao, 2021; https://doi.org/10.1029/2020JC016839) reported that the momentum gain by the ocean could be larger than the wind stress input, due to the ocean waves. The second paper (Chen et al., 2022; https://doi.org/10.1029/2021JC018360) demonstrated that, also due to waves, the drag coefficients in the atmospheric boundary layer have a spatial asymmetry during tropical cyclones. The third paper (Zhao et al., 2022; https://doi.org/10.1029/2022JC019015), based on combination of wave‐coupled effects on both sides of air‐sea interface, demonstrates their impact on simulation of tropical cyclone intensity. All papers are based on unique in situ measurements and their data analysis. The Commentary is further used as an opportunity to outline and review the current state of the small‐large scale coupling topic with respect to ocean, weather and climate modeling. Plain Language Summary: Understanding the nature of climate change and predicting its trends have been one of the highest priorities for scientific communities and of great importance for the public. Climate simulations, however, have been facing challenges which persist for decades, and apparently mean that some of the physical processes in their description are missing. A large set of such processes rest with the coupled nature of small‐ and large‐scale air‐sea interaction phenomena. Since the spatio‐temporal scales of surface waves, around 100 m and 10 s, are too far from those in the climate system, that is, thousands to tens thousands kilometers and years to decades, their coupling have never been incorporated by climate models due to lack of understanding of physics of such interactions and computing capabilities. Recent publications indicate that surface waves can both change the upper ocean through non‐breaking wave‐induced mixing and, on the atmospheric side, air‐sea fluxes through modulating the interface of ocean and atmosphere. As a result, ocean and climate predictions can be essentially improved by considering surface waves in climate models. The Commentary mainly discusses three recent papers dedicated to this topic. In this paper, we revisit the problem of wind–wave interaction with emphasis on strong winds. For these events, it is assumed that nonlinearity is so large that the slope of the wind waves has reached a limiting steepness. Recent observations suggest that the drag decreases with wind in the strong wind speed regime. In this paper, we try to explain this. In the first step, we introduce a model for surface gravity waves and calculate explicitly the background roughness length from the original approach of Janssen. It is found that for young, steep wind sea, the background roughness length almost vanishes, giving a reduced drag. In addition, it is shown that for steep waves, the slowing down of the wind by waves is a nonlinear process; hence, the growth rate of the waves by wind depends in a nonlinear fashion on the wave spectrum. For strong winds, it is found that, as waves are typically steep, this nonlinear effect gives a further reduction of the wind input. Minimising the uncertainties in estimates of air-sea CO2 exchange is an important step toward increasing the confidence in assessments of the CO2 cycle. Using an atmospheric transport model makes it possible to investigate the direct impact of atmospheric parameters on the air-sea CO2 flux along with its sensitivity to e.g. short-term temporal variability in wind speed, atmospheric mixing height and the atmospheric CO2 concentration. With this study the importance of high spatiotemporal resolution of atmospheric parameters for the air-sea CO2 flux is assessed for six sub-basins within the Baltic Sea and Danish inner waters. A new climatology of surface water partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) has been developed for this coastal area based on available data from monitoring stations and underway pCO2 measuring systems. Parameterisa-tions depending on wind speed were applied for the transfer velocity to calculate the air-sea CO2 flux. Two model simulations were conducted -one including short term variability in atmospheric CO2 (VAT), and one where it was not included (CAT). A seasonal cycle in the air-sea CO2 flux was found for both simulations for all subbasins with uptake of CO2 in summer and release of CO2 to the atmosphere in winter. During the simulated period 2005-2010 the average annual net uptake of atmospheric CO2 for the Baltic Sea, Danish Straits and Kattegat was 287 and 471 GgCyr-1 for the VAT and CAT simulations, respectively. The obtained difference of 184GgCyr-1 was found to be significant, and thus ignoring short term variability in atmospheric CO2 does have a sizeable effect on the air-sea CO2 exchange. The combination of the atmospheric model and the new pCO2 fields has also made it possible to make an estimate of the marine part of the Danish CO2 budget for the first time. A net annual uptake of 2613GgCyr-1 was found for the Danish waters. A large uncertainty is connected to the air-sea CO2 flux in particular caused by the transfer velocity parameterisation and the applied pCO2 climatology. However, the present study underlines the importance of including short term variability in the atmospheric CO2 concentration in future model studies of the air-sea exchange in order to minimise the uncertainty. Two high frequency (HF) radar stations were installed on the Southeastern Bay of Biscay in 2009, providing high spatial and temporal resolution and large spatial coverage currents for the first time in the area. This has enabled to determine quantitatively the air-sea interaction patterns and time-scales for the period 2009-2010. The analysis was conducted by using the Barnett-Preisendorfer approach to canonical correlation analysis (CCA) of reanalysis surface winds and HF radar-derived currents. The results reveal that the CCA yields two canonical patterns. The first wind-current interaction pattern corresponds to the classical Ekman drift at sea surface, whilst the second describes an anticyclonic/cyclonic surface circulation. The results obtained demonstrate that the local winds play an important role in driving the upper water circulation. The wind-current interaction time-scales are mainly related to diurnal breezes and synoptic variability. In particular, the breezes force diurnal currents in the continental shelf and slope of the Southeastern Bay. It is concluded that the breezes may force diurnal currents over considerably wider areas than that covered by the HF radar, considering that the northern and southern continental shelves of the Bay exhibit stronger diurnal than annual wind amplitudes. The article presents a study which focuses on creating a simulation of the extra-tropical climate variability in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) using a combined atmosphere-ocean model. It relates that the said model combines the idealized quasi-geographic model of SH's wintertime atmospheric circulation with a general ocean circulation model. It notes that the model's development is motivated by the need to determine the role of atmosphere-ocean interaction in shaping climate variability.

The equatorial Pacific Ocean is responsible for the interannual variability of the global ocean-atmosphere CO2 fluxes. However, most ocean carbon models significantly underestimate the interannual variability of the regional ocean-atmosphere CO2 fluxes. A basin-scale ocean circulation-biogeochemistry model is employed to investigate the uncertainties associated with the choice of gas exchange formulation, and to assess the implications of the choice of ecosystem model. Using four different, quadratic and cubic relationships of the gas transfer velocity with wind speed yields small differences in the integrated sea-to-air CO2 flux (0.32 to 0.42 PgCyr-1), but large differences in the averaged ΔpCO2 (44 to 73 μatm) for the area of 150° E-90°W, 10° N-10° S. While the choice of gas exchange formulation primarily influences the magnitudes, the choice of ecosystem model has a broader influence on the spatial and temporal variations in modeled carbon fields in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. Particularly, employing an ecosystem model without a dissolved organic pool overestimates the interannual variability in net community production, leading to under-estimated interannual variability of the basin-scale sea-to-air CO2 flux. Prediction of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is hindered by a spring predictability barrier (SPB). In this paper, we investigate the effects of the Indian Ocean (IO) on the SPB. Using a seasonally varying extended IO–ENSO recharge oscillator model, we find that the SPB is much weakened when IO is coupled with ENSO. To gauge the relative role of the Indian Ocean dipole (IOD) and the Indian Ocean Basin (IOB) modes in weakening ENSO SPB, we develop an empirical dynamical model, the linear inverse model (LIM). By coupling/decoupling the IOB or IOD mode with ENSO, we show that the IOB significantly weakens eastern Pacific and central Pacific ENSO SPBs, while the IOD plays a weaker role. The evolution of the optimum initial structures also illustrates the importance of the IOB in ENSO SPB. Moreover, the IOB strongly influences the forecast skill of La Niña SPB rather than El Niño SPB. This point is also identified through six coupled models from the North American multimodel ensemble. It may be related to the role of the IO in the asymmetry in the duration of El Niño and La Niña. The IOB-induced easterly wind anomalies are conducive to the development of La Niña and thus the prediction of La Niña events, whereas these anomalous easterlies are less important during the development of El Niño and the related forecast of El Niño events.
