Scientific papers on the history of psychiatric diagnosis presented at the 16th International Taniguchi Symposium for Comparative History of Medicine-East and West which was held in 1991 in Japan were briefly reviewed and discussions and comments interchanged in this meeting were introuduced with some personal appreciation that the meeting was excellently organized and enormously successful. Particularly, the papers of medical historians and the expert in specific area like Indian medicine from North America and Europe were highly instructive. The informal gathering in the evening had offered a fascinating original report such as an old documentary film about Imu, a Japanese culture bound syndrome. One very important point was raised in this review that the comparisons between the Medicine-East and the West, particularly the translation of the Eastern medical descriptions of mental illness into the modern Western pschiatric terms should be very cautiously carried out, because by the crude identification of one medical system with the other system the uniqueness of the illness in a specific time and in a specific place might easily be overlooked. For both Japanese and Korean traditional medicine share with Chinese traditional medicine and yet they preserve their uniqueness, a small group study for comparative East Asian medicine was suggested for the more elaborated clarification of medical terms.

Hydroxy fatty acids (FAs) in fresh snow from Sapporo, one of the heaviest snowfall regions in the world, have been studied to ascertain the airborne bacterial endotoxin concentrations and their biomass. The presence of β-hydroxy FAs (C9-C28), constituents of Gram-negative bacteria (GNB), suggests long-range transport of soil microbes. Likewise, the occurrence of α- and ω-hydroxy FAs (C9-C30 and C9-C28, respectively) in snow reveals their contribution from epicuticular waxes and soil microorganisms. Estimated endotoxin and GNB mass can aid in assessing their possible impacts on the diversity and functioning of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as lethal effects on pedestrians through dispersal of microbes. Air mass back trajectories together with hydroxy FAs unveil their sources from Siberia, Russian Far East and North China by the Asian monsoon. Japan exports sophisticated capital goods. Since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), Japanese companies have offshored the production of lower-end goods and parts and components to Asian countries. Because of this, several researchers argued that a weaker yen no longer stimulates machinery exports much because an increase in Japanese exports increases parts and components imports from overseas Asian subsidiaries. This paper finds that, after the GFC, a weaker yen no longer increases Japanese machinery exports to Asia but continues to stimulate exports outside of Asia. Thus, the weaker yen since 2020 does not help Asian firms to import vital Japanese capital goods but does increase the profitability of Japanese manufacturers and their exports to non-Asian countries. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease primarily affecting the small intestine that is caused by the ingestion of gluten in genetically susceptible individuals. The development of celiac disease is based on a complex immune response to gluten proteins. The global average prevalence in the general population is about 1%. In recent years, it has become clear that celiac disease is not less common in Asian countries than in Western countries but often remains undiagnosed. Although the number of patients with celiac disease in Asia is expected to increase with improving disease recognition and advances in diagnostic techniques, there remain few reports of celiac disease in the Far East region of Asia, especially in Japan. In this paper, we outline the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of celiac disease. In addition, we summarize the reported Japanese cases of celiac disease with an overview in Japan. By reviewing regulative documents and extant literature, this paper explores the realities and trends of international students in East and Southeast Asia (ESA). It also shows motivation and strategies of four new players in the international higher education sector in East and Southeast Asia i.e., China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia. Apart from showing that intraregional students have not predominated the overall international student population in the region anymore, the paper highlights that ESA region has become an established hub of international students rather than a new emerging destination as it was in previous years. The overall net flow of international students in this region was still deficit prior to 2010s, but the deficit in 2017 is still less than that of 2010?s. This is probably the first study of its kind to examine the trends of international students as well as of higher education policies of countries in the ESA region. The findings of this study shall provide an insight into international higher education trends among the ESA countries for stakeholders, including policymakers, university managers, faculty, students, and parents.

This paper demonstrates and assesses the capability of the advanced three-dimensional (3-D) ionosphere tomography technique, during severe conditions. The study area is northeast Asia and quasi-Japan-centred. Reconstructions are based on total electron content data from a dense ground-based global navigation satellite system receiver network and parameters from operational ionosondes. We used observations from ionosondes, Swarm satellites and radio occultation (RO) to assess the 3-D picture. Specifically, we focus on St. Patrick's day geomagnetic storm (17–19 March 2015), the most intense in solar cycle 24. During this event, the energy ingested into the ionosphere resulted in Dst and Kp and reaching values ~ − 223 nT and 8, respectively, and the region of interest, the East Asian sector, was characterized by a ~ 60% reduction in electron densities. Results show that the reconstructed densities follow the physical dynamics previously discussed in earlier publications about storm events. Moreover, even when ionosonde data were not available, the technique could still provide a consistent picture of the ionosphere vertical structure. Furthermore, analyses show that there is a profound agreement between the RO profiles/in-situ densities and the reconstructions. The westerly jet (WJ) is an important component of atmospheric circulation, which is characterized by prominent seasonal variations in intensity and position. However, the response of the WJ over Asia during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) is still not clear. Using general circulation model experiments, the seasonal behaviors of the WJ over central Asia and Japan are analyzed in this paper. The results show that, compared to the present day (PD), the WJ presents a complicated response during the LGM, both in intensity and position. Over central Asia, it becomes weaker in both summer and winter. But over Japan, it is enhanced in summer but becomes diminished in winter. In terms of position, the WJ over central Asia shifts southward in both summer and winter, whereas the WJ over Japan moves southward in summer but does not change obviously relative to PD in winter. Such WJ changes are well explained by meridional temperature gradients in high troposphere, which is closely linked to seasonal thermal anomalies over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Despite cooler LGM conditions, the anomalous warming center over the TP becomes stronger in summer. Derived from the heat budget equation, the stronger heating center is mainly caused by the weaker adiabatic cooling generated from ascending motion over the area south of the TP. In winter, the cooling over the TP is also strengthened, mostly owing to the subsidence-induced weaker adiabatic heating. The present paper attempts to find out the spatial and temporal movement of rice yield in twelve countries in Asia which is its lifeline over the period 1961 to 2016 by following Bai-Perron multiple structural break tests. The results based on endogenous multiple structural break analysis show that many of these countries passed through several phases of acceleration and deceleration in rice yield over this period The results also demonstrate that except Japan, all the twelve countries considered in our study experienced at least one structural break in rice yield at level during the period 1961 to 2016. The acceleration phases of rice yield growth observed mostly during 1970’s and 1980’s are resulted from improved technological innovations in agriculture whereas deceleration phases observed in the last two decades are mainly caused by environmental challenges on rice production. Most economists examining the question of 'pollution havens' have concluded that the level of environmental regulation and activism in different states is not generally a significant determinant of international patterns of trade and foreign direct investment. This paper argues on the basis of extensive primary research that with respect to Japan's foreign direct investment during the 1970s, at any rate, this conclusion needs to be rethought. In the early 1970s, Japanese actors were remarkably forthright in ascribing their investment decisions to a desire to move polluting industry overseas. These statements allow us to examine 'pollution export' as a state strategy, a project advocated by industry organizations, and a response of individual firms to high levels of protest and regulation. The 4th Asia Partnership Conference of Regenerative Medicine (APACRM) was held online on April 15, 2021, to promote regulatory harmonization of regenerative medicine products throughout Asia. Recognizing domestic regulatory guidelines within each country and region, and their underpinning rationales, is an important initial step toward a convergence of regulations. The 4th APACRM consisted of an open dialog with regulatory agencies regarding nonclinical and quality settings for cell therapy products (CTPs) through industry presentations and panel discussions with regulatory agencies. The latest updates on regenerative medicine fields in each country and region, and specific regulatory schematics in Japan, were also introduced. Hikikomori, which originated in Japan, refers to the condition where youths withdraw into the home and do not participate in society for an extended period of time. Recent updates on hikikomori presentation within the region were exchanged at a Hikikomori Round Table and Regional Symposium (HRTRS) discussion late 2017, leading to this perspective paper. Hikikomori presents as an overall homogeneous construct, while diversity in clinical presentation exists across East Asian countries. We examined the various presentations, risk factors, theoretical frameworks, and classification issues about hikikomori. In particular, specific risk factors have emerged to some degree across the region, while some are more locale specific. We propose that hikikomori youths have differential onset and developmental patterns, potentially resulting in heterogeneous presentation. We briefly summarized existing interventions in the East Asian region. Intervention strategies need to be tailored to different subtypes. A multicomponent approach would address complexity, multifactorial onset, and development of the condition. The HRTRS presented to participating countries the opportunity to collectively work toward a more universal definition of the hikikomori condition and explored innovative ways to shape existing service structures. Background: As chromatographic techniques have advanced, many articles that analyze the constituting compounds of medicinal materials have been published in relation to Northeast Asian traditional medicine, including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). TM-MC was launched in 2015, providing information about the chemical compounds in medicinal materials from chromatographic articles in PubMed. Since 2015, through continuous curation efforts, we have now released TM-MC 2.0 with significant improvements to the quantity and quality of the data (https://tm-mc.kr). Description: TM-MC 2.0 contains 635 medicinal materials, 34,107 chemical compounds (21,306 identified and de-duplicated), 13,992 targets, 27,997 diseases, and 5,075 prescriptions (2,393 de-duplicated by name). The database provides the largest number of identified compounds for medicinal materials listed in the pharmacopoeia compared to all TCM databases. In particular, marker compounds of medicinal materials and many newly discovered compounds were added through the manual curation of recent chromatographic articles. Conclusion: TM-MC 2.0 provides the largest collection of information about the chemical compounds of the medicinal materials listed in the Korean, Chinese, and Japanese pharmacopoeias. Recently there has been an increase in the number of students learning Mandarin Chinese (in mainland China and internationally). This increase has led to speculation that Mandarin Chinese is becoming a mainstream global language to the point of becoming a "lingua franca." This paper utilizes research findings from different regions and focal points and argues that Mandarin Chinese could be accepted as a "lingua franca" within some contexts, but is unlikely to do so in others. It argues that Mandarin Chinese is generally accepted as the "lingua franca" of China and a possible "lingua franca" within the East Asian region, while unlikely to become a "lingua franca" globally. The paper compares a number of different reasons for studying Mandarin Chinese by different stakeholders (i.e. governments, school boards, individual students) as well as comparative numbers of language learners. This paper also examines if Mandarin is the dominant and undisputed form of global Chinese. It concludes by demonstrating that there is a greater need for further research into Mandarin Chinese as a "lingua franca."

This paper focuses on English teachers in Asia in the context of globalization, the global spread of English and the emergence of English as an "Asian language." It highlights the dilemmas facing these teachers in meeting the growing social demands of English proficiency in a technology-influenced, managerial and neoliberal education environment with limited expertise, skills and policy support. We locate the paper in language policy and planning (LPP) within which the concept of micro-level agency provides a critical lens. We draw on insights from several Asian countries including Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan and Vietnam. We argue that while English teachers are found to exercise their agency to meet changing demands of English proficiency, this agency can be seen as the result of what we call "policy dumping" at the macro-level--i.e. education policymakers not paying due attention to the requirements of policy implementation but dumping down policies to educational institutions and English teachers for their implementation. We conclude the paper by suggesting implications for English language policies in Asian countries that respond to globalization and the dominant discourses of English in a globalized world.

Globalisation and social inequalities are the central research interests of a number of scholars in the world today. This Special Issue, Social Stratification Studies in East Asia, offers selected papers presented at the Tohoku University - National University of Singapore Joint Forum of Sociology and Stratification Studies held in Singapore in February 2009. This journal issue introduces five enthusiastic research projects presented at the forum on a variety of social stratification issues. Since the late 1990s technology has become a central component of national education policies in many Asian countries. In Singapore schools, for instance, technology has become central in teaching, learning and administration. On the other hand, Japanese schooling has been largely impervious to advances in educational technology. This paper aims to stimulate discourse between policy makers, teachers, researchers and the community in Japan and internationally to consider informed, meaningful strategies required for developing suitably skilled pupils for today's Digital Age. The paper begins with a summary of Singapore's technology centric education policy, called the Masterplan for IT in Education. The Japanese context is then summarised and a number of recently proposed educational reforms are discussed. It will be argued that these reforms do not lend themselves to supporting the necessary development of digital competency required of Japanese school pupils in the 21st century. To overcome the shortcomings, strategic actions to support meaningful ICT integration in education, influenced by the Singapore experience, will be proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Flooded rice paddies are important for modifying land surface energy and water budgets, especially in Asian countries. This study incorporated shallow paddy water into the Noah with Multi‐Parameterization (Noah‐MP) model to enhance its performance in capturing the distinct features of small Bowen ratios over flooded rice fields. The paddy surface water was parameterized as one integrated layer along with the top soil layer, and meteorological measurements from two crop sites in Japan, that is, SAITO (early rice) and SAGA (late rice), were employed for model evaluation at the field scale. The simulation results show that the model performance was significantly improved by combining the incorporation of paddy water and the calibration of rice crop parameters, particularly at SAGA. Compared with the reference run using the original version of Noah‐MP for SAGA, the underestimation in latent heat and the overestimation in sensible heat during daytime were decreased by ∼74 W m−2 (∼67%) and ∼92 W m−2 (∼55%), respectively. Approximately 60%–70% of this improvement was contributed by using calibrated rice crop parameters, while the rest of 30%–40% was from further incorporating paddy water. The decreased ground surface resistance owing to the presence of paddy water was crucial for capturing the features of small Bowen ratios. The observed water depth might help mitigate the underestimation of latent heat nonlinearly. This work may benefit the study of land‐atmosphere interactions and local and regional weather and climate in Asia with the widely used coupled Weather Research and Forecasting/Noah‐MP model. Plain Language Summary: As a staple food for approximately half the global population, rice is typically grown in flooded paddy fields, the distinct feature of which is a small ratio of sensible heat to latent heat. The presence of paddy water significantly modifies land surface energy and water budgets; however, such a shallow water layer in paddy fields has not been considered in many land surface models such as Noah‐MP. Noah‐MP is a well‐known land surface scheme coupled into the Weather Research and Forecasting model with the largest number of users in the atmospheric science field. To improve the model performance over flooded rice fields, this study incorporated paddy surface water into Noah‐MP and investigated the roles of some key parameters such as ground surface resistance and water depth. The model evaluation shows that the combination of using calibrated crop parameters for rice and correctly implementing the paddy water module helped mitigate the overestimation in sensible heat and the underestimation in latent heat. This work will be beneficial for the study of land‐atmosphere interactions and local and regional weather and climate, especially in Asia. The papers explore the organisation of accounting practitioners in five nations: Brunei Darussalam, Japan, Malaysia, the People's Republic of China and the Philippines. By and large, the authors have written about their own country, from their own national perspective, without reference to any overarching framework. As the organisers of a recently completed international project on the "new public financial management" also found, this "was the only really practicable option, as experiences, philosophies and approaches to writing were different in so many ways across the participating nations." The notion of "Asia" as "the continent which is the eastern part of the European landmass" serves as a stark linguistic reminder of the pitfalls of Euro-centrism in a project of this kind. Inviting local authors to participate and to choose the theme of their paper was the strategy chosen to minimise the dangers, without, however, necessarily removing them altogether. The reader will also find that an attempt has been made, during the editorial process, to retain local accents and concerns. Qualifications aside, they contain much food for thought and scope for further research. The debate about how to deal with them brings into view, over time, a veritable panoply of interest groups and some curious "interest talk". The changes from the 1970s to the 1990s are fascinating. The spectacular and sustained growth of Asian nations over the past several decades excited the attention of many disciplines. The present project was initially conceived, at least in part, as an opportunity to explore the contribution of accounting professionals to the "Asian miracle."

The Japanese members of Haliplidae were reviewed and 13 species in two genera are recognized. A new species, Haliplus morii sp. nov. is described from Honshu; it is similar to Haliplus japonicus Sharp, 1873, but belongs to a different subgenus. Haliplus diruptus J. Balfour-Browne, 1946, syn. nov. is treated as a junior synonym of Haliplus kotoshonis Kano & Kamiya, 1931. The records of Haliplus davidi Vondel, 1991 from Japan are regarded as misidentifications of H. kotoshonis. Haliplus basinotatus latiusculus Nakane, 1985, syn. nov. is treated as a junior synonym of H. basinotatus. The use of flipped learning as a pedagogical approach has increased in the 21st century. While there is an existing survey of literature regarding the development in American educational institutions--and fewer in an Asian context--there are some unique cultural considerations that may need to be examined regarding flipped learning's adoption and adaptation in Asia. This paper serves as a literature review focusing on several Asian nations with respect to three major considerations in comparison to the United States: geographical, educational, and cultural. After the comprehensive review, which comments on the number of relevant publications available per nation, this paper concludes that there is no significant barrier to the implementation of flipped learning in Asia beyond the existing considerations apparent in the United States (access, time, and institutional support). Additionally, the prevalence of flipped learning in Asia, and the purposes of various studies surveyed, indicate that cultural barriers, at least in this area, are becoming less notable or authoritative as national or historical distinctions are diminishing through Millennials' tendencies toward globalization.

The application of data mining technology to food services and the restaurant industry has certain social value. By predicting customer traffic and needs, a restaurant can prepare a reasonable amount of meals for customers according to predicted needs which is conducive to improving the dining experience of customers and also improving the quality of food preparation and making the restaurant itself operate more efficiently. In recent years, we have seen the use of collaborative robots for use in the fast food industry. In Asia and more specifically in Japan, we have seen many fast-food chains implement the use of robots to better serve their customers. By studying the linear regression algorithm and the random forest algorithm, this paper proposes a new interwoven novel fusion approach of combining both algorithms and applies the new model to restaurant data to assist in the prediction of customer traffic in the restaurant industry. This predictive algorithm using cognitive techniques can assist these newly place robots in the food industry better serve their client base and in doing so make the industry more efficient. Experimental, comparison, and analysis are reported in the paper. The error rate of the fusion solution is reduced by approximately 5.503% compared with the linear regression algorithm and is approximately 3.719% lower than the error rate of the random forest algorithm. Results show that the new fusion algorithm can achieve better prediction results of customer traffic prediction for the restaurant industry. This paper elaborates on recent trends in Japanese higher education partnerships through three cases of collaboration between Japanese universities and higher education institutions in China, Mongolia, and the Southeast Asia (hereinafter referred to as ASEAN). Our analysis shows that partnerships were shaped by both top-down government policies and bottom-up activities based on institutional visions and past relations. Japan's educational quality and reputation, particularly in science and technology, is highly regarded by higher education institutions (HEIs) interested in developing competitive international programs. On one hand, Japan is striving to deepen and expand its partnerships with HEIs, particularly within Asia. A number of domestic and international factors - such as Japan's population decline; increasing competition among HEIs both on the domestic and international front; an ambition to remain competitive in a twenty-first century, knowledge-based economy; and Japan's strategy to strengthen its influence in Asia - drive the partnerships. On the other hand, while earlier partnerships were limited to student and faculty exchange or joint research projects, institutions increasingly prioritize more comprehensive strategic partnerships. Such strategic partnerships are important to overcome barriers during the COVID-19 pandemic that limit physical movement and interaction, and they may drive even greater collaboration and integration among Asian higher education institutions.

Purpose: The eyes are one of the most frequently involved organs in sarcoidosis in Asia, including Japan. Sarcoid uveitis is the major complaint of ocular sarcoidosis. The detection of epithelioid granuloma (EG) requires histological biopsy of the uvea for the precise diagnosis of sarcoid uveitis, because it is challenging to diagnose sarcoid uveitis without a history of systemic sarcoidosis. To diagnose sarcoid uveitis, we have established novel methods. Patients and Methods: In this study, we included 30 eyes of 21 patients with granulomatous uveitis diagnosed via slit-lamp examinations, gonioscopy, fundus photography, and fluorescein angiography. Vitrectomy was performed to remove the vitreous opacity with vision loss. To examine vitreous cell components, we used liquid-based cytology (LBC). To detect EG in an intraocular irrigating solution, we collected vitreous cell components, and then the cell pellets were embedded in the cell block procedure. Results: Here, we demonstrated the usefulness of the histological detection of EG and epithelioid cells (ECs) in LBC from vitreous body specimens and in the cell block procedure from vitreous cell components in an intraocular irrigating solution. Our results showed that the detection rates of EG were 6.3% (1/16) in LBC and 9.1% (1/11) in the cell block procedure in the sarcoid uveitis-suspected group and 7.7% (1/13) in LBC and 28.6% (2/7) in the cell block procedure in the sarcoidosis group. We would discuss the specificity of the EG/EC detection of ocular sarcoidosis. Conclusion: Our methods are helpful in the precise diagnosis of ocular sarcoidosis and the control of the development of systemic sarcoidosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article features the journal Advancing the Consumer Interest published by the American Council on Consumer Interest. This journal address issues of interest to consumers in the fields of education, law, and research. The Spring 1995 issue contains four papers that examine the misunderstood problem of consumer protection in Japan; consumer issues and consumer protection in Asia; letting the buyer beware in the educational marketplace; and a new enforcement approach for a new era in U.S. Federal Trade Commission consumer protection regulation.

The extension of back‐arc basins and formation of marginal seas following the subduction of oceanic lithosphere are usually attributed to the rollback of subducting slabs and distorted mantle convection. Here, we observe two belts of strong Pn attenuation beneath the Japan Sea; their strikes are generally consistent with local Pn anisotropy and the retreat directions of the Pacific and Philippine trenches. Hence, there seem to be two divergent mantle flows in the uppermost mantle, pushing a "double door" for the Japan Sea opening. In this study, we construct a high‐resolution broadband Pn attenuation model for the uppermost mantle beneath the Japan Sea. Two strong Pn attenuation belts are observed in this region, with their strikes generally consistent with the local Pn velocity anisotropy and the opening directions of the Japan Sea. Therefore, two divergent mantle flows likely exist in the uppermost mantle, pushing the opening of the Japan Sea like a "double door." These mantle flows could be part of mantle convection in a big mantle wedge, where ascending hot materials from the deep mantle not only feed volcanoes in northeastern Asia but also thicken the back‐arc oceanic crust. Student learning outcomes assessment examines whether programs cover the material stated in their learning goals, whether students are learning the material, and the impact on student retention, graduation, post-graduation outcomes, and institutional accreditation, with the aim of providing faculty with data that can be used to help programs evolve or improve. While there is a plethora of research regarding effective methods of assessment used in the United States, little has been written regarding cross-national comparisons of assessment methodologies. This paper examines the current state of assessment in several nations and regions, and draws parallels in practices across countries. A literature search using the term "outcomes assessment" yielded 228 articles, of which, only 35 described practices outside the United States. Generally, searches on the terms "outcomes assessment" and "global" tend to return studies of outcomes assessment of teaching about global issues as it is practiced in the United States, rather than results about outcomes assessment practices used in other countries.

This paper provides the overview of "Shokuiku" in Japan, and discusses the future perspective on application of its concepts to nutrition education in other Asian countries. In Japan, there has been a growing concern on increase of obesity and the metabolic syndrome among middle-aged men. Additionally, child obesity has also become one of the important health problems. The increased obesity among them is possibly associated with inappropriate dietary habits (eg skipping breakfast, excessive fat intake and insufficient vegetable). Under this circumstance, the "Basic Law on Shokuiku" was enacted in 2005, which was the first law that regulates one's diets and eating habits. For effective implementation of Shokuiku program, dietitians and registered dietitians would play important roles in various settings. Japan has a long history of dietitian system as well as school-lunch programs. Later, in order to further enhance the school-based Shokuiku programs, the Diet and Nutrition Teacher System was established in April 2007. From an international point of view, "nutrition education" programs aim to improve dietary practices so as to ensure adequate energy or nutrient intake and also to reduce obesity and life-style-related diseases, whereas the concepts of Shokuiku have very wide approaches. Shokuiku's efforts expand to support food culture, especially through school-based programs, as well as to improve food environment by providing information on appropriate diets. These approaches can be introduced in nutrition education in other Asian countries, not only to improve one's health and nutritional status but also to secure food culture and food safety in each country. The article presents information on the 4th Asian Oceania Epilepsy Organization (AOEO). AOEO was founded at the 25th Annual Congress of the Japan Epilepsy Society (JES) with Dr.M. Seino as the President. The 4th AOEC was held in collaboration with the 36th Annual Congress of the JES from September 11 to 14, 2002 in Karuizawa, Japan. It was an important milestone in the history of development of epileptology and epilepsy care in Asia in terms of the richness of its scientific program and the large number of participants. The scientific program consisted of one special lecture, four symposia, two workshops, eight didactic lectures, the ILAE/IBE/WHO Global Campaign Meeting and 332 free papers.

Combined NO2 and CO2 observations have the potential to constrain the identification of the locations and strength of urban CO2 emissions, in particular, point sources such as power plants. We report the first results of airborne spectroscopic NO2 and CO2 observations over an urban area in Japan in February 2018. Inversed emission rates of two stacks of the coal‐fired power plant for CO2 showed relatively good agreement with those estimated by a bottom‐up inventory—the Regional Emission inventory in ASia (REAS) v3.1—within −7% to 40% because the plume shapes were well identified due to constraint by NO2 measurements. The estimated NOx emission rates showed discrepancies more than 80% with those estimated by the REAS v3.1, mainly due to the uncertainties in activity data and emission factors, or in the greatly varying NO/NO2 ratios in fresh plumes, which warrant further investigations when estimating NOx emissions from satellite NO2 observations on km‐scales. Plain Language Summary: Burning of fossil fuels at high temperatures constitutes a major anthropogenic source of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2). While CO2 stays in the atmosphere for hundreds of years, thereby being a well‐mixed gas, NO2 has a much shorter lifetime of only a few hours. This substantial difference in lifetime between NO2 and CO2 means that concurrent NO2 and CO2 observations obtained by the same platform can be used to identify the locations and strength of CO2 emissions from point sources such as power plants. In February 2018, for the first time, we obtained concurrent airborne spectroscopic NO2 and CO2 observations over an urban area, to demonstrate the traceability of NO2 to CO2. The plumes of co‐emitted NO2 and CO2 were derived from measured spectra. The plumes of NO2 and CO2 co‐emitted from the stacks of power plants were well identified owing to constraint by NO2. Uncertainties of inversed emission rates were statistically derived. For CO2, the results were within 40% in agreement with a bottom‐up emission inventory known as REAS v3.1. For NOx, however, a disagreement of 80% was identified, likely due to the uncertainties of the inventory data or in the NOx partitioning in fresh plumes.
