ONLINE social networks , *ACADEMIC libraries , *EDUCATION , *MASS media - Abstract
This paper overviews the use of social networks in university libraries in Mexico. It presents the analysis of posting trends at a national level, as well as an analysis of the use of various platforms, the dissemination they offer, and what they promote. Additionally, the paper evaluates the extent to which the possibilities offered by these platforms are exploited as low cost means of mass communication. The method is based on the analysis of posts from 50 university library sites on Twitter and 50 sites on Facebook from January 2017 to the beginning of August 2019. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the creation and structuring of the Group of Science Libraries (GBC)1 based on the administrative records generated. This allows University as well as national coverage among the various libraries of Higher Education Institutions in Mexico. This is accomplished by the establishment of a library brand allowing for greater visibility, so specialized users can meet their information needs with the various services and products offered, individually or jointly, by the GBC members. Additionally, this paper presents the elements taken into account, and the experience in the development of a library brand that would allow the group to gain greater recognition and academic visibility among libraries and research support librarians, at both a national and an international level. This paper discusses the gestation process, implementation methodology, and results obtained from the initiative to use e-learning to train human resources for health, six years after the launch of the Virtual Campus of Public Health of the University of Guadalajara (Mexico); the discussion is framed by Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) standards and practices. This is a special report on the work done by the institutional committee of the Virtual Campus in western Mexico to create an Internet portal that follows the guidelines of the strategic model established by Nodo México and PAHO for the Region of the Americas. This Virtual Campus began its activities in 2007, on the basis of the use of free software and institutional collaboration. Since the initial year of implementation of the node, over 500 health professionals have been trained using virtual courses, the node’s educational platform, and a repository of virtual learning resources that are interoperable with other repositories in Mexico and the Region of the Americas. The University of Guadalajara Virtual Campus committee has followed the proposed model as much as possible, thereby achieving most of the goals set in the initial work plan, despite a number of administrative challenges and the difficulty of motivating committee members. In Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, morbidity and mortality from injuries have increased alarmingly since 2008. This paper aims to examine the changes in the number of hospital discharges for external injuries recorded during the 2008-2010 period in a hospital in Ciudad Juarez. A descriptive retrospective study conducted at the Ciudad Juarez General Hospital looked at the incidence of external injuries as the reason for hospital discharges during the period under analysis. The average proportion of hospital discharges attributed to external injuries was 27%, with the 25-44-year-old age group being the most affected. More than half of the discharges were for fractures. The incidence rate of hospital discharges attributed to injuries in Ciudad Juarez was almost four times greater than that reported at the national level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives. To determine the prevalence of Trypanasoma cruzi antibodies among the population under 18 years of age in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, and to identify risk factors associated with housing conditions and vector presence and distribution. Methods. A cross-sectional, epidemiological study of the population under 18 years of age living in 10 of the 11 health districts of the state of Veracruz, Mexico, from 2000 to 2001. Presence of T. cruzi antibodies was determined by hemagglutination inhibition test (HAl) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) of serum samples spotted on filter paper, and confirmed by HAl, ELISA, and indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) on serum samples. A questionnaire was administered to determined housing conditions, and entomological indices for triatomines were calculated for both the intra- and peridomiciliary areas. The results were analyzed using bifactorial and multifactorial unconditional logistic regression. Results. Of the 150 individuals presenting an initial reaction, 14 were confirmed positive (5 by HAl, ELISA and IFA; 6 by HAl and ELISA, and 3 by ELISA and IFA), for a total prevalence rate of 0.91% (95% CI: 0.85–0.94). All of the confirmed-positive cases were from five of 14 health districts, with the Tuxpan district having the highest prevalence rate: 5.2% (95%CI: 1.2–9.0). Risk factors included having noticed cracks in the house walls and gaps in the roof. The only species of vector captured was Triotoma dimidiata. The entomologic indices for infestation, colonization, and natural infection were: 10.9%, 50.0%, and 9.0%, respectively. Conclusions. Active, vector-borne transmission of T. cruzi was confirmed in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, with an overall antibody seroprevalence rate of 0.19% among the population under 18 years of age. Seroprevalence rates among this segment of the population, which serves as a sentinel group, should be closely monitored to determine if more stringent methods of vector control and epidemiological surveillance are needed. This paper studies the use of the expression hasta las trancas --originally hasta las trencas-- which is widely used in modern colloquial Spanish in Europe and to a lesser extent in Mexico, but not included in the DRAE nor in most other dictionaries. A corpus of examples has been collected based on questionnaires and sampling in the provinces of Almería, Granada and Málaga, in Internet discussion forums, the daily press and periodicals and literary texts. In the study the different meanings of this expression are listed, and the different uses of each semantic value are tabled (e.g. predicative and attributive verb combinations, and noun and adjective modifications). FRUIT trees , *PLANT propagation , *STOCKS (Horticulture) , *FLORAL morphology , *CALYX - Abstract
The black sapote, commonly called "chocolate pudding fruit", is the family Ebenaceae. This fruit tree, native to Mexico, grows best in coastal areas from Jalisco to Chiapas,Veracruz and Yucatan. Black sapote has been cultivated in South Florida in home gardens and patios, in fruit collections, and to a small extent in commercial orchards. The tree is appreciated as an ornamental and also produces a large quantity of fruit. The tree is usually dioecious, with small axillary flowers with have a persistent calyx. Propagation is by seed or by grafting. Grafting is the recommended way to guarantee the sex of the plants and the quality of their fruit. The methods evaluated here are cleft grafting and veneer grafting, using scions 6 months of age. Most of the trees grown in South Florida have been propagated by seed, but some superior selections have been grafted and sold by nurserymen. A selection named 'Merida' was made at the University of Florida Tropical Research and Education Center (Homestead, Florida) and propagated by grafting. The information in this paper increases our knowledge and the economic viabilily of the black sapote in Tropical America. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
