ROMANIES - Abstract
Gil Vicente’s Auto das Ciganas is a crucial text in the study of Portuguese gypsies during the Early Modern Period. Written in the early 1500s, it encapsulates numerous depictions and prejudices against the Roma, which persisted throughout centuries of their coexistence with a frequently hostile society. Many of these representations continue to exist in contemporary Portuguese society, emphasizing the importance of understanding their historical origins. This paper aims to accomplish just that, presenting the findings of an ongoing research project that aims to gather and identify references to gypsies in Portuguese literature and art from the 16th to the 18th centuries. By expanding the scope of analysis beyond the well-known works of Vicente, this study seeks to provide a more comprehensive understanding. Through this approach, which involves the examination of new texts within a broader timeframe, the paper aims to explore both continuity and change while examining the dominant society’s perceptions constructed about the Portuguese Gypsy minority during the Early Modern era.
