Abstract

This paper organizes information on Bolivian Amazon indigenous movements through different historical contexts, offering an overview of the diversity and complexity of indigenous political action in the Mojos plains. The article takes as a reference, especially, the area that corresponds to the Indigenous Territory and National Park Isiboro Sécure (TIPNIS), and benefits from a specialized bibliography on the Bolivian lowlands and journalistic documents that recorded the multiethnic indigenous organization in the country's Amazon. Through these methods, the text retrieves historiographical data about the region, reviews the characteristics of the pre-colonial and republican Amazonian indigenous political articulation, and verifies how it brokered a variety of indigenous political discourses and practices at different historical moments. In its first part, the paper presents episodes of indigenous resistance to the colonial occupation of the Mojos plains. Subsequently, it recovers the history of the formation of indigenous political organizations in the Bolivian lowlands. In the third part, the centrality of the I Indigenous March of 1990 for the consolidation of the Bolivian indigenous movement is put into debate, demonstrating the overlaps between this movement and the history of TIPNIS and the indigenous people of Mojos. In conclusion, the complexity of the contemporary Amazonian indigenous political plot is contextualized so it can demonstrate that the indigenous movement for autonomy, dignity and the right to territory does not appear for the first time or was fully resolved by the foundation of the Bolivian Plurinational State.
