PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of electronic and paper-based standardized nursing care plans (SNCPs) use on quality of nurses’ documentation. METHODS: Using quasi-experimental design, two wards were grouped into electronic and paper-based wards. Nurses were trained to use electronic- and paperbased SNCPs for care-planning and documentation. Data was collected before, 3, and 6 months postintervention and analyzed with SPSS version 20. FINDINGS: There was improvement in documentation quality in the two wards after introducing SNCPs with higher quality scores in the electronic ward postintervention. CONCLUSION: Providing SNCPs in electronic and paper formats is critical to improving nursing documentation. IMPLICATION FOR NURSING PRACTICE: Adequate training and support for nurses are needed for successful implementation of SNCPs in electronic health records (EHRs) in developing nations. Aim To examine the effects of a web-based nursing process documentation system on the stress and anxiety of nursing students during their clinical practice. Methods A quasi-experimental design was employed. The experimental group ( n = 110) used a web-based nursing process documentation program for their case reports as part of assignments for a clinical practicum, whereas the control group ( n = 106) used traditional paper-based case reports. Stress and anxiety levels were measured with a numeric rating scale before, 2 weeks after, and 4 weeks after using the web-based nursing process documentation program during a clinical practicum. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t tests, chi-square tests, and repeated-measures analyses of variance. Results Nursing students who used the web-based nursing process documentation program showed significant lower levels of stress and anxiety than the control group. Conclusion A web-based nursing process documentation program could be used to reduce the stress and anxiety of nursing students during clinical practicum, which ultimately would benefit nursing students by increasing satisfaction with and effectiveness of clinical practicum. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the challenges to sustainability of standardized nursing care plan in selected tertiary health institutions in Nigeria. Methods: Using convergent mixed method design, the qualitative and quantitative data were collected from 427 nurses and nine stakeholders. This was done in one phase with the use of validated questionnaires and in‐depth interview guide/key informant interview guide. Data were collected for 5 months and analyzed with SPSS version 25. Qualitative data were analyzed using themes. Results: The explored significant challenges by stakeholders and nurses to sustainability of standardized nursing care plan (SNCP) in all the selected hospitals were inadequate knowledge of standardized nursing languages (SNLs), inadequate staffing, lack of motivation, lack of mandate to use SNLs by the educational system, lack of computers on the wards, weakness of previous training on SNL/SNCP, lack of interest, and high patient load. Conclusion: The study concludes that inadequate knowledge of SNLs and inadequate staff could contribute to non sustainability of SNCP. Implications for nursing practice: Nurses should be continuously trained on standardized nursing languages. Staff motivation and increasing the number of staff on the wards would increase the interest of the nursing staff. This will in turn improve the quality of documentation and patient care. Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the newly completed unemployment syndrome scale (USS). Method: Using a cross‐sectional descriptive design, 319 long‐term unemployed people completed a questionnaire. Findings: Internal consistency reliability was supported by Cronbach's α value of.912 for the total scale. To assess the construct validity of the USS, we examined convergent validity, known‐groups validity, and exploratory factor analysis. We also assessed convergent validity by examining the relationship between the USS and five other related and known concepts. The Exploratory Factor Analysis performed on the USS extracted three factors with Eigen values >1 (Kaiser's Criterion), which explained the variability of 55.16%. As hypothesized, all correlations were moderate. On the other hand, regarding known‐groups validity, the hypotheses were validated. Conclusions: This evidence of the reliability and validity of USS supports its use in research and clinical practice to evaluate the impact of long‐term unemployment and its treatment. Relevance to clinical practice: The USS is a Spanish clinical tool for the assessment of patients with unemployment syndrome symptoms and integral needs care by nursing professionals. PURPOSE: To develop a preliminary clinical validation the NANDA‐I nursing diagnosis "Grieving" in cases of perinatal loss. METHODS: Descriptive cross‐sectional study using the Fehring model. FINDINGS: The overall clinical validity index for the diagnosis was 0.15. Only four defining characteristics and five manifestations identified in the literature were validated. CONCLUSIONS: The variability of manifestations identified in the study participants is considered to be detrimental to the overall clinical validity index. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: The clinical validity of the diagnosis could not be substantiated by the preliminary results of this study and, therefore, additional research is necessary to determine the ability of the diagnosis to adapt to perinatal loss situations in real contexts. Some manifestations have been proposed to NANDA‐I for inclusion as defining characteristics in the nursing diagnosis of grieving. OBJETIVO: Validar clínicamente de forma preliminar el diagnóstico enfermero NANDA‐I duelo en caso de pérdida perinatal. MÉTODOS: Estudio descriptivo transversal usando el modelo de Fehring. RESULTADOS: El índice de validez clínica global del diagnóstico fue de 0.15. Se validaron únicamente cuatro características definitorias y cinco manifestaciones identificadas en la literatura. CONCLUSIONES: Se considera que la variabilidad de las manifestaciones presentadas por los participantes actuó en detrimento del índice de validación clínica global. PURPOSE: To describe a new method of validating nursing outcomes and indicators that incorporates nurses' and patients' perspectives. METHODS: The Nurse–Patient Outcome Content Validation Method was developed in light of the experience of conducting the content validation of the nursing outcome Knowledge: Heart Failure Management (1835). It was developed based on Fehring's content validation model used for the validation of NANDA International nursing diagnoses. It expands the concept of who is an expert in the validation of nursing outcomes. FINDINGS: The Nurse–Patient Outcome Content Validation Method is a new method in which the concept of experts is expanded to gather patients' as well as healthcare professionals' perspectives on the importance of indicators to measure an outcome. Based on the importance ratios, the indicators are grouped into three categories: critical, supplemental, or unnecessary. To validate the outcome, importance ratios of critical and supplemental indicators are summed and divided by the total number of the indicators to calculate the outcome content validity (OCV) score of the nursing outcome. CONCLUSION: The Nurse–Patient Outcome Content Validation Method is a new method of content validation of nursing outcome and indicators that incorporates the patient perspective. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: The Nurse–Patient Outcome Content Validation Method provides a mechanism to include nurses' and patients' perspectives to content validity research of nursing outcomes. PURPOSE: To develop and validate the operational definition (ODs) for each defining characteristic (DC) contained in the Nursing Diagnosis (ND) "insomnia" (00095) in the occupational health context. METHODS: Methodological study carried out in two stages, including a consensus of experts to develop the ODs (Stage 1) and an online Delphi panel, performed in two rounds, to validate them (Stage 2). FINDINGS: The 15 ODs proposed in Stage 1 were narrowed down to six validated ODs in the first round (diagnostic content validity index [DCVI] = 0.80‐0.89). In the second round, five ODs were validated (DCVI = 0.80‐0.94). Finally, the remaining four ODs were validated by the general consensus of experts. CONCLUSIONS: The ODs were validated, although there remains some doubt as to whether some of the DCs can be applied to the field of occupational health. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: The ODs developed and validated could improve the diagnostic accuracy of the ND "insomnia" (00095) in the context of occupational health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To analyze the accuracy of the defining characteristics of the nursing diagnosis of sexual dysfunction in women undergoing pharmacological treatment for breast cancer. Methods: A cross‐sectional accuracy study with statistical analysis. Findings: Alteration in sexual satisfaction was the defining characteristic with the highest sensitivity value, while perceived sexual limitation was the defining characteristic with the highest value for both sensitivity and specificity. Conclusions: Perceived sexual limitation is a good clinical indicator to infer initial stages of sexual dysfunction and to confirm its presence. Implications For Nursing Practice: Accurate diagnostics allow devising an action plan directed to the patients' real needs, helping prescribe and deliver the appropriate nursing interventions. PURPOSE: To validate the content of the NANDA-I diagnosis “death anxiety” (00147). METHODS: Descriptive study using the Fehring model with 202 Spanish nurses who were expert in end-of-life care to explore the adequacy of the components of the NANDA-I diagnosis “death anxiety” (00147) in the Spanish edition. FINDINGS: None of the diagnosis definitions were considered as representative. Furthermore, 5 of the 56 defining characteristics and 5 of the 26 related factors were validated as major. CONCLUSIONS: In general, the components of the diagnosis “death anxiety” (00147) in the Spanish edition are not representative according to experts. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: The results support the need to either exclude the diagnosis from the taxonomy or adjust its content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PURPOSE: To determine the applicability of the Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) after nutritional counseling intervention in malnourished patients. METHODS: Prospective, randomized, open‐label study in 106 hospital patients with malnutrition. The NOC indicators evaluated were 162202 and 180201. FINDINGS: The intervention group significantly increased both NOC indicator scores compared with the control group, these indicators significantly correlated with body mass index, Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, and Barthel's Index. CONCLUSION: The NOC indicators are sensitive to patients' changes in clinical practice, and correlate well with other indicators in this context. PURPOSE: Evaluate the efficiency of the nursing care plan, applied with the use of NANDA‐I, NOC, and NIC (NNN) linkages, for elderly women with incontinence who live in nursing homes. METHODS: A randomized controlled experimental design was applied. NNN linkages were prepared and applied for 12 weeks in an experimental group. NOC scales were evaluated again for two groups. RESULTS: A 0.5 NOC point change targeted in all elderly in the experimental group were provided between pretest–posttest scores. The experimental group had higher life quality and lower incontinence severity/symptoms than the control group. CONCLUSION: It is important that NNN linkages effective for solving the problems are used in different groups and with larger samples to create further evidence linking NNN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Without data on the average time for performing nursing interventions, it is not possible to identify the cost‐effective nursing practices, nurse staffing levels, and skill mix that are associated with improved patient outcomes, nor can reimbursement rates be accurately determined. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to estimate the time needed to perform direct nursing interventions in Korea using the Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) system, and then compare the findings with time estimates made by U.S. nurses. METHODS: Data were collected from 721 registered nurses working in eight hospitals in South Korea. Each nurse was asked to choose the 30 most frequently used direct nursing interventions from a list of 433 from the Korean version of the NIC and to estimate the time needed to perform their selections. The U.S. data from the second edition of NIC were used for comparative purposes. RESULTS: Among the 92 nursing interventions studied, the majority were in the physiological domain, with 46 (50%) in Physiological: Basic and 25 (27%) in Physiological: Complex. In Korea, the intervention reported as taking the shortest time was Tube Care: Umbilical Line, while the intervention reported as taking the longest time was Bowel Irrigation. Comparisons of the time to perform interventions in the two countries indicated that only 38 (41.3%) interventions are performed in 15 min or less in both countries. Of the remainder, six interventions showed considerable variation in time to perform between the two countries. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATION: Findings from the study will provide fundamental data for calculating the cost of nursing interventions, which is critical for the establishment of reimbursement rates for interventions provided. PURPOSE: To design and test educational software to improve nursing students’ diagnostic reasoning through NANDA‐I‐based clinical scenarios. METHODS: A mixed method approach was used and included content validation by a panel of 13 experts and prototype testing by a sample of 56 students. FINDINGS: Experts’ suggestions included writing adjustments, new response options, and replacement of clinical information on the scenarios. Percentages of students’ correct answers were 65.7%, 62.2%, and 60.5% for related factors, defining characteristics, and nursing diagnoses, respectively. CONCLUSION: Full development of this software shows strong potential for enhancing students’ diagnostic reasoning. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE: New graduates may be able to apply diagnostic reasoning more rapidly by exercising their diagnostic skills within this software. OBJETIVO: Desenvolver e testar um protótipo de software educativo para melhorar o raciocínio diagnóstico de estudantes de enfermagem. MÉTODOS: Uma abordagem mista foi utilizada e incluiu validação de conteúdo por 13 experts e testagem do protótipo por 56 estudantes. RESULTADOS: Sugestões dos experts incluíram ajustes na escrita, inclusão de novas opções de resposta e substituição de dados clínicos nos cenários. Os percentuais de respostas corretas dos estudantes foram 65,7%, 62,2% e 60,5% para fatores relacionados, características definidoras e diagnósticos de enfermagem respectivamente. CONCLUSÃO: O desenvolvimento deste software tem um forte potencial para melhorar o raciocínio diagnóstico de estudantes. PURPOSE This study aimed to validate the definition and define the characteristics and related factors of unemployment disorder, a proposed nursing diagnosis. METHODS Using Fehring's diagnostic content validity model, Spanish experts were asked to assess the adequacy of the label, defining the characteristics and other related factors. FINDINGS The content validity index was 0.8690. A total of 16 defining characteristics reached major criteria (>0.80). CONCLUSION The present study supports the proposed development of a nursing diagnosis for the human response to unemployment. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The results suggest that the inclusion of the 'unemployment disorder' diagnostic NANDA-I taxonomy would allow nursing professionals to identify the disorder and its causes and manifestations, and therefore provide the information needed for planning more relevant interventions and results. OBJETIVO Validación de la definición, características definitorias y factores relacionados de trastorno por desempleo, una propuesta de diagnóstico enfermero. METODOLOGÍA Usando el modelo de validación de contenido de Fehring, se consensuó mediante expertos españoles la denominación de la etiqueta, las características definitorias y otros factores relacionados. RESULTADOS El índice de validez de contenido global fue 0.8690. Un total de 16 características definitorias alcanzaron carácter crítico (>0.80). CONCLUSIÓN El presente estudio apoya la propuesta de elaborar un diagnóstico de enfermería para la respuesta humana al desempleo. Purpose The aim of this study was to identify perceptions of caring behaviors in student nurses from four countries. Methods This study employed a descriptive, comparative survey design. Four hundred sixty-seven students were recruited from four countries ( Nigeria, India, Greece, and the Philippines) to participate in the study during the months of September 2013 to January 2014. Data were collected using the Caring Behavior Inventory. Findings The highest ranked subscale was 'assurance of human presence' (4.827 ± 0.927), while 'positive connectedness' (4.610 ± 0.949) was the lowest ranked subscale. There were no statistically significant correlations between the Caring Behavior Inventory scale and gender ( F = 0.215, p = .643), educational level ( F = 0.396, p = .529), and family structure of students ( F = 0.680, p = .410), except for age ( F = 9.380, p = .002, η2 = 0.141) and the country of origin ( F = 5.772, p = .001, η2 = 0.036). Conclusion Students from four countries possess positive caring behaviors, specifically on physically based caring interventions, while there is a need to emphasize expressive caring behaviors during nursing education and training. Implication for Nursing Practice Caring interventions should be carried out in order to help students build or enhance their caring behaviors that can be adapted to clinical situations. Purpose The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an educational intervention on home nursing care plans based on NANDA, Nursing Interventions Classification, and Nursing Outcomes Classification for registered nurses working at primary healthcare settings in Greece. Methods This is a quasi-experimental study without a control group. The sample consisted of 19 registered nurses. The study tool was a questionnaire administered pre- and post-educational intervention. Findings The intervention improved their skills on nursing diagnoses' nomination, proper formulation, and individualization of defining characteristics, but it did not improve them in desired outcomes formulation. Conclusions A significant effect of an educational intervention on nursing care plans was demonstrated. Purpose To develop and psychometrically evaluate a questionnaire based on the outcome 'Knowledge: Breast-feeding' of the Nursing Outcomes Classification ( NOC) to determine the knowledge of parents on breast-feeding. Background The NOC outcome 'Knowledge: Breast-feeding' allows for nurses/midwives to assess the efficacy of interventions aimed to improve the knowledge on breast-feeding in parents thought the clinical interview/observation. However, the use of self-administered questionnaires by patients could facilitate its evaluation. Methods Two-phased study: (1) Development of the questionnaire based on experts' opinions; (2) Methodological design to assess its psychometric properties. Implications for Nursing Practice The availability of tools that enable the determination of the knowledge of patients would facilitate nurses/midwives to set objectives, individualize interventions, and measure their effectiveness. Purpose The purposes of this study were to identify frequency and time spent performing indirect nursing interventions by Korean nurses, and to compare the time spent on indirect nursing interventions with estimates of time spent by U.S. nurses. Methods Data were collected from 721 registered nurses working in eight hospitals in Korea. U.S. data were obtained from the fifth edition of the Nursing Interventions Classification published in 2008. Results Korean nurses took more time with 4 interventions, and U.S. nurses took more time with 13. Conclusions In general, Korean nurses spent less time performing indirect interventions than did U.S. nurses.
