Ever since Tommy Orange’s novel There There was published in 2018, Native American urban experience has been pointed out as the novel’s crux. The characters in the novel are Native American but most of them feel estranged from the community since they do not live on reservations, whereby the general implication is that reservations have become ossified as identity markers for many Native Americans. This paper aims to analyze how the novel’s characters use urban areas to create spaces of belonging, thus debunking the myth of the “reservation Indian”. Aided by Edward Soja’s theories on Thirdspace and Robert Tally’s theory of topophrenia, the paper discusses regional powwows, non-profit organizations, American Indian cultural centers, and digital storytelling/narrativization as specific examples of the subject’s awareness of space, their engagement and inscription into space through the practices mentioned above.

The article investigates the conformation of the urban imaginary through comics and very specifically through the case of Pravda, la survireuse (Peellaert, Thomas,1967). For this purpose, crossed relations between comics and academic positions have been explored, mainly represented by the visions of Venturi and Scott Brown, investigating the urban thought through visual narration. Here we find a way of illustrating the city through the incipient post-modern myths such as youth, desire, non-conformism or women's liberation. All of this will emerge in a city that is staged in the graphic narrative through the different spaces of post-modernity: the pop city, the screen architecture, the terrain vague, the flipper-city, the abandoned neighbourhoods, the lysergic landscapes, the artificial nature or the theme park. The metropolis is presented under the codes of pop, which give support to the city show spaces by exhibiting a public space transformed under the laws of advertising., El artículo indaga sobre la conformación del imaginario urbano a través del cómic y muy concretamente en el caso de Pravda, la survireuse (Peellaert,Thomas,1967). Para ello se han explorado relaciones cruzadas entre el cómic y posiciones académicas, principalmente representadas por las visiones de Venturi y Scott Brown, indagando en el pensamiento urbano a través de la narración visual. Se recoge aquí un modo de ilustrar la ciudad a través de los incipientes mitos posmodernos como la juventud, el deseo, el inconformismo o la liberación de la mujer. Todo ello eclosionará en una ciudad que viene escenificada en la narración gráfica a través de los diversos espacios de la posmodernidad:  la ciudad pop, la arquitectura pantallizada, los terrain vague, la ciudad-flipper, los barrios abandonados, los paisajes lisérgicos, la naturaleza artificial o el parque temático. La metrópoli se presenta bajo los códigos del pop, que dan soporte a los espacios de la ciudad del espectáculo exhibiendo un espacio público transformado bajo las leyes de la publicidad.

This article examines the urban and architectural development of Doha, Qatar since 1950 with a focus on the last few decades and the construction of a modernist skyscraper skyline. It views the city stereoscopically, as both fact and symbol. From one perspective the city is a basic architectonic and morphologic fact; from another view it is a powerful ontological and epistemological symbol. My main contention is that both aspects are needed to understand how the rapid urbanization of the Arabian Gulf city uses the built environment to find an orientation in history, particularly when ‘history’ in this context seems in its own right a tool fraught with contradictions.

La noción de patrimonio está en constante revisión, exigida por nuevos significados en la ciudad y sus habitantes. La investigación estudió dos barrios en Santiago de Chile, sus valores patrimoniales e imaginarios urbanos. Se propuso la hipótesis de que éstos expresan la tensión entre lo tangible y la percepción de la ciudad a diferentes escalas, y serían claves para articular proyectos arquitectónicos que resuelvan problemas de sus comunidades. Algunas preguntan detonantes fueron: ¿Cuál es la relación entre lo real (tangible) y lo imaginado (percepción)? ¿Cuál es el rol del diseño urbano para la construcción de comunidades y lugares? Se proponen una serie de operaciones de lectura, que describen las zonas móviles y estáticas donde reposan las conjeturas e imágenes sobre dos barrios a trabajar con estudiantes: Músicos del Mundo - Población Chile, en San Joaquín, y San Eugenio en la comuna de Estación Central - Santiago. La ponencia expone el proceso y resultado de este proyecto de investigación de la carrera de Arquitectura de Universidad UNIACC ejecutado durante los años 2020 y 2021., The notion of heritage is in constant revision, demanded by new meanings in the city and its inhabitants. The research studied two neighborhoods in Santiago de Chile, their heritage values, and urban imaginations. The hypothesis was proposed that these express the tension between the tangible and the perception of the city at different scales and would be key to articulating architectural projects that solve problems in their communities. Some triggering questions were: What is the relationship between the real (tangible) and the imagined (perception)? What is the role of urban design for the construction of communities and places? A series of reading operations are proposed, which describe the mobile and static areas where conjectures and images rest on two neighborhoods to work with students: World Musicians - Chile Population, in San Joaquín, and San Eugenio in the Central Station district - Santiago. This article argues that the theoretical invisibility of non‐privatized land tenures constitutes a failure of the urban imaginary, which restricts the ability to forge less commodified urban futures. The article explicates two attributes of non‐privatized land—fungibility and combinatoriality—that produce an urban land nexus capable of fostering pro‐poor agglomeration economies and generating socialities that exceed the model of the separative self that is hegemonic in more propertied settings. Fungibility, it shows, externalizes supportive economies of production and reproduction into surrounding neighborhoods by shifting the boundaries and terms of usufruct without cadastral oversight or regulation. Combinatoriality—a hybrid formulation of combined territories and combined territorialities—describes overlapping forms of access to land or demarcations of legitimate land use, either competitive or reciprocal. Together, these two attributes of non‐privatized land systems produce a propinquity requirement for economic production, or a social density and liveliness more limited in privatized land markets. Through a diagnostic analogy with the simple reproduction squeeze characteristic of subsistence agrarian settings, it charts how an urban spatial reproduction squeeze—felt globally in dense, rising‐rent environments across the global North and South—generates subsistence needs that mixed‐tenure environments are uniquely capable of fulfilling and that can provide inspiration for radical housing struggles elsewhere.

Aquest article desenvolupa un entreteixit d'experiències vinculades a la infància englobades sota la idea de paisatges infantils per tal de fer notar l'enorme influència que la visió infantil ha tingut i continua tenint en els processos de generació o transformació urbana. Aquests paisatges analitzats aposten per situar la infància al centre de la reflexió urbana, reclamant-la com a agent transformador de la ciutat, davant del racionalisme extrem de la societat actual. Podem dir que els paisatges infantils són aquelles experiències o accions que tenen la infància com a referent en diferents aspectes. En primer lloc, s'analitzen propostes que, inspirades en la manera de fer infantil, ofereixen estratègies alternatives per generar nous paisatges urbans. En segon lloc, s'analitzaran alguns espais específics destinats a la infància que van sorgir en detectar que l'espai públic adult no estava adaptat a nens i nenes i que van generar paisatges propis i fàcils de reconèixer per a la comunitat. En tercer lloc, s'analitzen propostes o accions que proposen nenes i nens com a agents transformadors de l'espai urbà, amb capacitat crítica i de proposta. Aquests paisatges infantils seran analitzats des de l'arquitectura, des de les pròpies característiques intrínseques, la topografia, els límits, els elements que els constitueixen, els recorreguts que permeten, l'enquadrament o marc d'actuació, i qui en són els observadors i usuaris, per tal de recuperar-ne estratègies suggerents per a futures actuacions sobre el paisatge urbà., This article develops a series of experiences related to childhood, encompassed under the idea of children's landscapes. The goal is to make visible the enormous influence that children's vision has had and continues to have on the processes of urban generation or transformation. The analysis of these landscapes aims to place childhood at the centre of urban debate, understanding it as a transforming agent of the city, against the extreme rationalism of today's society. We can say that children's landscapes are those experiences or actions that have childhood as a reference in different aspects. In the first place, the article examines proposals that, inspired by children's behaviours and practices, offer alternative strategies for the generation of new urban landscapes. Secondly, some specific spaces destined for childhood will be analysed. Particularly, the examined spaces are those that arose when detecting that the adult public space was not adapted to children and that generated their own and recognizable landscapes for the community. Third, this research examines proposals or actions that present children as transforming agents of urban space, with critical and proactive capacity. These children's landscapes will be analysed from architecture, from their own intrinsic characteristics, topography, the limits, the elements that constitute them, the routes they allow, the framing or framework of action. It will also examine who are the observers and users of them, in order to recover from them suggestive strategies for future actions on the urban landscape., El presente artículo desarrolla un entretejido de experiencias vinculadas a la infancia englobadas bajo la idea de paisajes infantiles, con el fin de visibilizar la enorme influencia que la visión infantil ha tenido y sigue teniendo en los procesos de generación o transformación urbana. Estos paisajes analizados apuestan por situar a la infancia en el centro de la reflexión urbana, reclamándola como agente transformador de la ciudad, frente al racionalismo extremo de la sociedad actual. Podemos decir que los paisajes infantiles son aquellas experiencias o acciones que tienen a la infancia como referente en diferentes aspectos. En primer lugar, se analizan propuestas que, inspiradas en el modo de hacer infantil, ofrecen estrategias alternativas para la generación de nuevos paisajes urbanos. En segundo lugar, se analizarán algunos espacios específicos destinados a la infancia que surgieron al detectar que el espacio público adulto no estaba adaptado a niñas y niños, y que generaron paisajes propios y reconocibles para la comunidad. En tercer lugar, se analizan propuestas o acciones que proponen a niñas y niños como agentes transformadores del espacio urbano, con capacidad crítica y propositiva. Estos paisajes infantiles serán analizados desde la arquitectura, desde sus propias características intrínsecas, la topografía, los límites, los elementos que los constituyen, los recorridos que permiten, el encuadre o marco de actuación, y quiénes son los observadores y usuarios de los mismos, con el fin de recuperar de ellos estrategias sugerentes para futuras actuaciones sobre el paisaje urbano., Peer Reviewed
