Background: The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between oxidative stress marker (8-iso-prostaglandine F2α) and glycemic indices computed from daily glucose monitoring data in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM)., Methods: Thirty-one children and adolescents with T1DM (median age 12.2 years) and healthy subjects (median age 11.7 years) were enrolled into the study. Anthropometric data were recorded for the entire group before the study. In addition, diabetes duration, insulin requirement, lipid values, microalbuminuria, HbA1c were recorded in T1DM subjects. T1DM subjects performed self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) for a month (at least four times a day) for calculating glycemic indices. Twenty-four-hour urine 8-iso-prostoglandine F2α levels were studied at the end of the study period in the both groups., Results: Median diabetes duration was 5 years, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was 7.3%. Standard deviation (SD) of the blood glucose (BG) was determined as 85 mg/dL. Median urinary 8-iso-prostoglandine F2α was found to be significantly higher than that of the healthy subjects (2808.9 and 298 pg/mg creatinine, p<0.001, respectively). There was no correlation between urinary 8-iso-prostoglandine F2α and age, anthropometric data, diabetes duration, insulin requirement, lipid values, microalbuminuria, HbA1c, or SD of BG in T1DM groups., Conclusions: This study showed that, 8-iso-prostoglandine F2α that is an oxidative stress marker, is significantly higher in T1DM than that of healthy subjects while, no significant relation between glycemic indices and urinary 8-iso-prostoglandine F2α levels were demonstrated. Further studies are needed to assess other factors, and the relationship between glucose fluctuations and oxidative stress markers.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been reported to occur concurrently in some cases. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP) antibodies, which have been reported to have diagnostic value for RA, in children with type 1 DM. The study included 90 children with type 1 DM (Group 1) and 76 control cases (Group 2). The rates of reported family histories of RA and rheumatoid factor positivity did not differ between groups. In group 1, one case (1.1%) was positive for anti-CCP antibodies, whereas none of the controls were positive. The anti-CCP positive patient had no relevant joint complaints. Anti-CCP antibodies were rarely found in cases of pediatric type 1 DM. Thus, relevant screening in the follow-up of pediatric patients does not appear to be rational in the absence of any signs or symptoms of arthritis. The single case exhibiting a high anti-CCP level needs to be followed up for RA, although this positive result might be nonspecific and transient.

Introduction: We evaluated the effect of different syringe volume, needle size and sample volume on blood gas analysis in syringes washed with heparin., Materials and Methods: In this multi-step experimental study, percent dilution ratios (PDRs) and final heparin concentrations (FHCs) were calculated by gravimetric method for determining the effect of syringe volume (1, 2, 5 and 10 mL), needle size (20, 21, 22, 25 and 26 G) and sample volume (0.5, 1, 2, 5 and 10 mL). The effect of different PDRs and FHCs on blood gas and electrolyte parameters were determined. The erroneous results from nonstandardized sampling were evaluated according to RiliBAK's TEa., Results: The increase of PDRs and FHCs was associated with the decrease of syringe volume, the increase of needle size and the decrease of sample volume: from 2.0% and 100 IU/mL in 10 mL-syringe to 7.0% and 351 IU/mL in 1 mL-syringe; from 4.9% and 245 IU/mL in 26G to 7.6% and 380 IU/mL in 20 G with combined 1 mL syringe; from 2.0% and 100 IU/mL in full-filled sample to 34% and 1675 IU/mL in 0.5 mL suctioned sample into 10 mL-syringe. There was no statistical difference in pH; but the percent decreasing in pCO2,, K+, iCa2+, iMg2+; the percent increasing in pO2 and Na+ were statistical significance compared to samples full-filled in syringes. The all changes in pH and pO2 were acceptable; but the changes in pCO2, Na+, K+ and iCa2+ were unacceptable according to TEa limits except fullfilled-syringes., Conclusions: The changes in PDRs and FHCs due nonstandardized sampling in syringe washed with liquid heparin give rise to erroneous test results for pCO2 and electrolytes.

Undoubtedly, social media is one of the significant components of computer and internet technologies. It offers users the opportunity to share emotions, thoughts, and life experiences through various means such as text, images, and videos on the internet. In doing so, it not only provides a multifaceted communication and interaction opportunity for users of all ages but also creates a dynamic and entertaining parallel universe. This universe shapes and transforms individual, social, and cultural life, as well as habits. With the daily increase in user numbers, social media has become an integral part of our lives. The primary objective of this study is to determine the social media usage habits of fourth-grade students, known as Generation Z. The research was conducted using semi-structured interviews, a qualitative data collection method. The universe of the study consisted of 654 fourth-grade students attending state schools in seven different provincial centers representing the seven geographical regions of Turkey during the 2021-2022 academic year. The data were collected using an interview form developed for this research and analyzed with the content analysis technique. According to the research findings, it was determined that approximately three-quarters of primary school fourth-grade students use social media on a daily basis. Moreover, most participants stated that they use social media for educational, communicative, and entertainment purposes. This study seeks to establish the viewpoints of former university rectors regarding prevalent instructional challenges in higher education. Moreover, the research aims to assess how these challenges are being addressed. Technical terms are explained upon first use, and the writing style is objective, clear, and formal, adhering to consistent language usage and grammatically correct structure. The findings do not exhibit bias and adhere to a conventional academic structure with clear logical progression between statements. The study employs a phenomenological design, a qualitative research method, and involves a mixed sampling of 19 participants. The data were analyzed using an artificial intelligence-based algorithm. The study identified three categories of instructional problems described by the rectors: instructors, students, and curricula. Among these, the rectors' identified problem areas related to teaching staff were employment and promotion, staff quality, economic problems, excessive workload, qualified publications, ethical violations, personal rights, image and reputation, academic freedom/autonomy, and job satisfaction. Problem areas concerning students include socioeconomic issues, student quality, counselling services, and student numbers. As for the curriculum, drawbacks have been identified in the foreign language programmes, applied courses, unplanned teaching, ineffective training of teaching staff and an outdated curriculum. Despite the rectors' awareness of such problems, they have hesitated to address them or have postponed their resolution. At this stage, it can be concluded that rectors' managerial abilities, particularly in delegation and time management, are inadequate. The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficiency of dynamic mathematics software-supported instruction in teaching of exponential and logarithmic functions on mathematics achievement and self-efficacy perceptions of students. The study used a quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control group. The sample consists of 66 students from 12th grade, 33 of whom were in the experimental group and 33 in the control group. After analyzing that the mathematics exam scores of two classes were not statistically significant, these classrooms were randomly assigned as experimental and control groups. On one hand, the traditional method was used in the control group. On the other hand, the lessons were supported by GeoGebra activities in the experimental group. The application took 6 weeks. Achievement test and self-efficacy perception scale prepared by Umay (2001) were the data collection tools. The achievement test was applied to the participants as pretest, posttest, and delayed test, and the self-efficacy perception scale was applied as pretest and posttest. In data analysis, repeated measures ANOVA was used. The results of the study indicated that a significant difference emerged in favor of the experimental group. Objectives: There is limited information on the influence of collecting small amounts of blood on the quality of blood gas analysis. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of different degrees of underfilling of syringes on test results of venous blood gas analysis., Methods: Venous blood was collected by venipuncture from 19 healthcare workers in three 1.0 mL syringes for blood gas analysis, by manually aspirating different volumes of blood (i.e., 1.0, 0.5 and 0.25 mL). Routine blood gas analysis was then immediately performed with GEM Premier 5,000. The results of the two underfilled syringes were compared with those of the reference syringe filled with appropriate blood volume., Results: The values of most assayed parameters did not differ significantly in the two underfilled syringes. Statistically significant variations were found for lactate, hematocrit and total hemoglobin, the values of which gradually increased as the fill volume diminished, as well as for sodium concentration, which decreased in both insufficiently filled blood gas syringes. The bias was clinically meaningful for lactate in syringe filled with 0.25 mL of blood, and for hematocrit, total hemoglobin and sodium in both syringes containing 0.5 and 0.25 mL of blood., Conclusions: Collection of smaller volumes of venous blood than the specified filling volume in blood gas syringes may have an effect on the quality of some test results, namely lactate, hematocrit, total hemoglobin and sodium. Background and Aims: A higher frequency of dyslipidemia is reported in children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and celiac disease (CD). Recently, continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) has been associated with better lipid profiles in patients with T1D. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between treatment modality and lipid profile, metabolic control, and body mass index (BMI)-SDS in children with both T1D and CD. Methods: Cross-sectional study in children registered in the international SWEET database in November 2020. Inclusion criteria were children (2–18 years) with T1D and CD with available data on treatment modality (CSII and injections therapy, IT), triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, dyslipidemia, HbA1c, and BMI-SDS. Overweight/obesity was defined as > +1 BMI-SDS for age. Data were analyzed by linear and logistical regression models with adjustment for age, gender, and diabetes duration. Results: In total 1009 children with T1D and CD (female 54%, CSII 54%, age 13.9 years ±3.6, diabetes duration 7.2 years ±4.1, HbA1c 7.9% ±1.4) were included. Significant differences between children treated with CSII vs. IT were respectively found; HDL 60.0 mg/dL vs. 57.8 mg/dL, LDL 89.4 mg/dL vs. 94.2 mg/dL, HbA1c 7.7 vs. 8.1%, BMI-SDS 0.4 vs. 0.6, overweight and obesity 17% vs. 26% (all p < 0.05). Conclusions: CSII is associated with higher HDL and lower LDL, HbA1c, BMI-SDS, and percentage of overweight and obesity compared with IT in this study. Further prospective studies are required to determine whether CSII improves lipid profile, metabolic control and normalize body weight in children with both T1D and CD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reflects on a study which examines an important aspect of arterial blood gas measurement particularly on the influence on the various parameters of the type of heparin, dry balanced against liquid in the preparation of the sample. He cites the implications of the study in terms of cost in the choice between the syringes. He also notes the importance of the study in providing an insight to the extent to which dilution by heparin may alter the values of the concentration in a blood.
