The complex structure and extensive details of solar spectral data, combined with a recent surge in volume, present significant processing challenges. To address this, we propose a deep learning-based compression technique using deep autoencoder (DAE) and 1D-convolutional autoencoder (CAE) models developed with Hinode SOT/SP data. We focused on compressing Stokes I and V polarization spectra from the quiet Sun, as well as from active regions, providing a novel insight into comprehensive spectral analysis by incorporating spectra from extreme magnetic fields. The results indicate that the CAE model outperforms the DAE model in reconstructing Stokes profiles, demonstrating greater robustness and achieving reconstruction errors around the observational noise level. The proposed method has proven effective in compressing Stokes I and V spectra from both the quiet Sun and active regions, highlighting its potential for impactful applications in solar spectral analysis, such as detection of unusual spectral signals.

This paper introduces a novel approach to speaker-attributed ASR transcription using a neural clustering method. With a parallel processing mechanism, diarisation and ASR can be applied simultaneously, helping to prevent the accumulation of errors from one sub-system to the next in a cascaded system. This is achieved by the use of ASR, trained using a serialised output training method, together with segment-level discriminative neural clustering (SDNC) to assign speaker labels. With SDNC, our system does not require an extra non-neural clustering method to assign speaker labels, thus allowing the entire system to be based on neural networks. Experimental results on the AMI meeting dataset demonstrate that SDNC outperforms spectral clustering (SC) by a 19% relative diarisation error rate (DER) reduction on the AMI Eval set. When compared with the cascaded system with SC, the parallel system with SDNC gives a 7%/4% relative improvement in cpWER on the Dev/Eval set., Comment: To appear in Interspeech 2024

The large-scale fabrication of three-terminal magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with high yield is becoming increasingly crucial, especially with the growing interest in spin-orbit torque (SOT) magnetic random access memory (MRAM) as the next generation of MRAM technology. To achieve high yield and consistent device performance in MTJs with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, an integration flow has been developed that incorporates special MTJ etching technique and other CMOS-compatible processes on a 300 mm wafer manufacturing platform. Systematic studies have been conducted on device performance and statistical uniformity, encompassing magnetic properties, electrical switching behavior, and reliability. Achievements include a switching current of 680 uA at 2 ns, a TMR as high as 119%, ultra-high endurance (over 1012 cycles), and excellent uniformity in the fabricated SOT-MTJ devices, with a yield of up to 99.6%. We demonstrate approximate storage based on NAND-like spin-orbit torque (SOT) MRAM, through "device-modeling-architecture" explorations. We experimentally achieve down to 1E-5 level selectivity. Selectivity and low-power solutions are established by numerical calculation workflow. System-level power consumption is evaluated in the 512 KB last-level cache according to 5 quality levels. Error-tolerant applications, such as image processing, alleviate the demand for selectivity down to the 5E-2 level, leading to 54% ~ 61% energy-saving. Our proposal paves the novel and suitable path for high-density and low-power NAND-like SOT-MRAM.

We report a spin-orbit torque(SOT) magnetoresistive random-access memory(MRAM)-based probabilistic binary neural network(PBNN) for resource-saving and hardware noise-tolerant computing applications. With the presence of thermal fluctuation, the non-destructive SOT-driven magnetization switching characteristics lead to a random weight matrix with controllable probability distribution. In the meanwhile, the proposed CIM architecture allows for the concurrent execution of the probabilistic vector-matrix multiplication (PVMM) and binarization. Furthermore, leveraging the effectiveness of random binary cells to propagate multi-bit probabilistic information, our SOT-MRAM-based PBNN system achieves a 97.78\% classification accuracy under a 7.01\% weight variation on the MNIST database through 10 sampling cycles, and the number of bit-level computation operations is reduced by a factor of 6.9 compared to that of the full-precision LeNet-5 network. Magnetic van der Waals (vdW) materials have attracted massive attention because of their academic interest and application potential for the past few years. Its main advantage is the intrinsic two-dimensionality, enabling much smaller devices of novel concepts. One particular exciting direction lies in the current-driven spin-orbit torque (SOT). Here, we, for the first time, realize an all vdW three-terminal SOT memory, employing the unique physics principle of gigantic intrinsic SOT of Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) and the well-known industry-adopted tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect. We designed the device operation procedure and fabricated the FGT/h-BN/FGT vdW heterostructure as a proof of concept. This device exhibits a classical TMR effect and unambiguously demonstrates the conception by precise performance as expected: the magnetic information of the top-FGT is written by current-driven SOT and read out by TMR separately. The writing and reading current paths are physically decoupled, enhancing the design and optimization flexibility substantially and further strengthening the device's endurance naturally. Multi-talker automatic speech recognition plays a crucial role in scenarios involving multi-party interactions, such as meetings and conversations. Due to its inherent complexity, this task has been receiving increasing attention. Notably, the serialized output training (SOT) stands out among various approaches because of its simplistic architecture and exceptional performance. However, the frequent speaker changes in token-level SOT (t-SOT) present challenges for the autoregressive decoder in effectively utilizing context to predict output sequences. To address this issue, we introduce a masked t-SOT label, which serves as the cornerstone of an auxiliary training loss. Additionally, we utilize a speaker similarity matrix to refine the self-attention mechanism of the decoder. This strategic adjustment enhances contextual relationships within the same speaker's tokens while minimizing interactions between different speakers' tokens. We denote our method as speaker-aware SOT (SA-SOT). Experiments on the Librispeech datasets demonstrate that our SA-SOT obtains a relative cpWER reduction ranging from 12.75% to 22.03% on the multi-talker test sets. Furthermore, with more extensive training, our method achieves an impressive cpWER of 3.41%, establishing a new state-of-the-art result on the LibrispeechMix dataset.

We present a catalog that we named MODEST containing depth-dependent information on the atmospheric conditions inside sunspot groups of all types. The catalog is currently composed of 942 observations of 117 individual active regions with sunspots that cover all types of features observed in the solar photosphere. We use the SPINOR-2D code to perform spatially coupled inversions of the Stokes profiles observed by Hinode/SOT-SP at high spatial resolution. SPINOR-2D accounts for the unavoidable degradation of the spatial information due to the point spread function of the telescope. The sunspot sample focuses on complex sunspot groups, but simple sunspots are also part of the catalog for completeness. Sunspots were observed from 2006 to 2019, covering parts of solar cycles 23 and 24. By integrating the local voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) effect, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) effect, and spin-orbit torque (SOT) effect, we propose a novel device structure for field-free magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ). Micromagnetic simulation shows that the device utilizes the chiral symmetry breaking caused by the DMI effect to induce a non-collinear spin texture under the influence of SOT current. This, combined with the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) gradient generated by the local VCMA effect, enables deterministic switching of the MTJ state without an external field. The impact of variations in DMI strength and PMA gradient on the magnetization dynamics is analyzed.

Mn$_3$Sn, a metallic antiferromagnet with an anti-chiral 120$^\circ$ spin structure, generates intriguing magneto-transport signatures such as a large anomalous Hall effect, spin-polarized current with novel symmetries, anomalous Nernst effect, and magneto-optic Kerr effect. When grown epitaxially as MgO(110)[001]$\parallel$ Mn$_3$Sn($0\bar{1}\bar{1}0$)[0001], Mn$_3$Sn experiences a uniaxial tensile strain, which changes the bulk six-fold anisotropy landscape to a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with two stable states. In this work, we investigate the field-assisted spin orbit-torque (SOT)-driven response of the order parameter in single-domain Mn$_3$Sn with uniaxial tensile strain. We find that for a non-zero external magnetic field, the order parameter can be switched between the two stable states if the magnitude of the input current is between two field-dependent critical currents. Below the lower critical current, the order parameter exhibits a stationary state in the vicinity of the initial stable state. On the other hand, above the higher critical current, the order parameter shows oscillatory dynamics which could be tuned from the 100's of megahertz to the gigahertz range. We obtain approximate expressions of the two critical currents and find them to agree very well with the numerical simulations for experimentally relevant magnetic fields. We also obtain unified functional form of the switching time versus the input current for different magnetic fields. Finally, we show that for lower values of Gilbert damping ($\alpha \leq 2\times 10^{-3}$), the critical currents and the final steady states depend significantly on the damping constant. Token-level serialized output training (t-SOT) was recently proposed to address the challenge of streaming multi-talker automatic speech recognition (ASR). T-SOT effectively handles overlapped speech by representing multi-talker transcriptions as a single token stream with $\langle \text{cc}\rangle$ symbols interspersed. However, the use of a naive neural transducer architecture significantly constrained its applicability for text-only adaptation. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel t-SOT model structure that incorporates the idea of factorized neural transducers (FNT). The proposed method separates a language model (LM) from the transducer's predictor and handles the unnatural token order resulting from the use of $\langle \text{cc}\rangle$ symbols in t-SOT. We achieve this by maintaining multiple hidden states and introducing special handling of the $\langle \text{cc}\rangle$ tokens within the LM. The proposed t-SOT FNT model achieves comparable performance to the original t-SOT model while retaining the ability to reduce word error rate (WER) on both single and multi-talker datasets through text-only adaptation., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to ICASSP2024

We report the use of spin-orbit torque (SOT) magnetoresistive random-access memory (MRAM) to implement a probabilistic binary neural network (PBNN) for resource-saving applications. The in-plane magnetized SOT (i-SOT) MRAM not only enables field-free magnetization switching with high endurance (> 10^11), but also hosts multiple stable probabilistic states with a low device-to-device variation (< 6.35%). Accordingly, the proposed PBNN outperforms other neural networks by achieving an 18* increase in training speed, while maintaining an accuracy above 97% under the write and read noise perturbations. Furthermore, by applying the binarization process with an additional SOT-MRAM dummy module, we demonstrate an on-chip MNIST inference performance close to the ideal baseline using our SOT-PBNN hardware.

The recently proposed serialized output training (SOT) simplifies multi-talker automatic speech recognition (ASR) by generating speaker transcriptions separated by a special token. However, frequent speaker changes can make speaker change prediction difficult. To address this, we propose boundary-aware serialized output training (BA-SOT), which explicitly incorporates boundary knowledge into the decoder via a speaker change detection task and boundary constraint loss. We also introduce a two-stage connectionist temporal classification (CTC) strategy that incorporates token-level SOT CTC to restore temporal context information. Besides typical character error rate (CER), we introduce utterance-dependent character error rate (UD-CER) to further measure the precision of speaker change prediction. Compared to original SOT, BA-SOT reduces CER/UD-CER by 5.1%/14.0%, and leveraging a pre-trained ASR model for BA-SOT model initialization further reduces CER/UD-CER by 8.4%/19.9%., Comment: Accepted by INTERSPEECH 2023

SoCs are now designed with their own AI accelerator segment to accommodate the ever-increasing demand of Deep Learning (DL) applications. With powerful MAC engines for matrix multiplications, these accelerators show high computing performance. However, because of limited memory resources (i.e., bandwidth and capacity), they fail to achieve optimum system performance during large batch training and inference. In this work, we propose a memory system with high on-chip capacity and bandwidth to shift the gear of AI accelerators from memory-bound to achieving system-level peak performance. We develop the memory system with DTCO-enabled customized SOT-MRAM as large on-chip memory through STCO and detailed characterization of the DL workloads. %We evaluate our workload-aware memory system on the CV and NLP benchmarks and observe significant PPA improvement compared to an SRAM-based in both inference and training modes. Our workload-aware memory system achieves 8X energy and 9X latency improvement on Computer Vision (CV) benchmarks in training and 8X energy and 4.5X latency improvement on Natural Language Processing (NLP) benchmarks in training while consuming only around 50% of SRAM area at iso-capacity.

We investigate the cross-calibration of the Hinode/SOT-SP and SDO/HMI instrument meta-data, specifically the correspondence of the scaling and pointing information. Accurate calibration of these datasets gives the correspondence needed by inter-instrument studies and learning-based magnetogram systems, and is required for physically-meaningful photospheric magnetic field vectors. We approach the problem by robustly fitting geometric models on correspondences between images from each instrument's pipeline. This technique is common in computer vision, but several critical details are required when using scanning slit spectrograph data like Hinode/SOT-SP. We apply this technique to data spanning a decade of the Hinode mission. Our results suggest corrections to the published Level 2 Hinode/SOT-SP data. First, an analysis on approximately 2,700 scans suggests that the reported pixel size in Hinode/SOT-SP Level 2 data is incorrect by around 1%. Second, analysis of over 12,000 scans show that the pointing information is often incorrect by dozens of arcseconds with a strong bias. Regression of these corrections indicates that thermal effects have caused secular and cyclic drift in Hinode/SOT-SP pointing data over its mission. We offer two solutions. First, direct co-alignment with SDO/HMI data via our procedure can improve alignments for many Hinode/SOT-SP scans. Second, since the pointing errors are predictable, simple post-hoc corrections can substantially improve the pointing. We conclude by illustrating the impact of this updated calibration on derived physical data products needed for research and interpretation. This paper presents a novel streaming automatic speech recognition (ASR) framework for multi-talker overlapping speech captured by a distant microphone array with an arbitrary geometry. Our framework, named t-SOT-VA, capitalizes on independently developed two recent technologies; array-geometry-agnostic continuous speech separation, or VarArray, and streaming multi-talker ASR based on token-level serialized output training (t-SOT). To combine the best of both technologies, we newly design a t-SOT-based ASR model that generates a serialized multi-talker transcription based on two separated speech signals from VarArray. We also propose a pre-training scheme for such an ASR model where we simulate VarArray's output signals based on monaural single-talker ASR training data. Conversation transcription experiments using the AMI meeting corpus show that the system based on the proposed framework significantly outperforms conventional ones. Stateful logic is a promising processing-in-memory (PIM) paradigm to perform logic operations using emerging nonvolatile memory cells. While most stateful logic circuits to date focused on technologies such as resistive RAM, we propose two approaches to designing stateful logic using spin orbit torque (SOT) MRAM. The first approach utilizes the separation of read and write paths in SOT devices to perform logic operations. In contrast to previous work, our method utilizes a standard memory structure, and each row can be used as input or output. The second approach uses voltage-gated SOT switching to allow stateful logic in denser memory arrays. Generic Object Tracking (GOT) is the problem of tracking target objects, specified by bounding boxes in the first frame of a video. While the task has received much attention in the last decades, researchers have almost exclusively focused on the single object setting. Multi-object GOT benefits from a wider applicability, rendering it more attractive in real-world applications. We attribute the lack of research interest into this problem to the absence of suitable benchmarks. In this work, we introduce a new large-scale GOT benchmark, LaGOT, containing multiple annotated target objects per sequence. Our benchmark allows users to tackle key remaining challenges in GOT, aiming to increase robustness and reduce computation through joint tracking of multiple objects simultaneously. In addition, we propose a transformer-based GOT tracker baseline capable of joint processing of multiple objects through shared computation. Our approach achieves a 4x faster run-time in case of 10 concurrent objects compared to tracking each object independently and outperforms existing single object trackers on our new benchmark. In addition, our approach achieves highly competitive results on single-object GOT datasets, setting a new state of the art on TrackingNet with a success rate AUC of 84.4%.
