We prove that a Murai sphere is flag if and only if it is a nerve complex of a flag nestohedron and classify all the polytopes arising in this way. Our classification implies that flag Murai spheres satisfy the Nevo-Petersen conjecture on $\gamma$-vectors of flag homology spheres. We continue by showing that a Bier sphere is minimally non-Golod if and only if it is a nerve complex of a truncation polytope different from a simplex and classify all the polytopes arising in this way. Finally, the notion of a cubical Bier sphere is introduced based on the polyhedral product construction, and we study combinatorial and geometrical properties of these cubical complexes., Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures

The star chromatic index of a graph $G$, denoted by $\chi^\prime_s(G)$, is the smallest integer $k$ for which $G$ admits a proper edge coloring with $k$ colors such that every path and cycle of length four is not bicolored. Let $d$ be the greatest common divisor of $n$ and $k$. Zhu~et~al. (\footnotesize{Discussiones Mathematicae: Graph Theory, 41(2): 1265, 2021}) showed that for every integers $k$ and $n> 2k$ with $d\geq 3$, generalized Petersen graph $GP(n,k)$ admits a 5-star edge coloring, with the exception of the case that $d = 3$, $k\neq d$ and $\frac{n}{3}= 1\pmod{3}$. Also, they conjectured that for every $n>2k$, $\chi^\prime_s(GP(n,k))\leq 5$, except $GP(3,1)$. In this paper, we prove that for every $GP(n,k)$ with $n\geq 2k$ and $d\geq 3$ their conjecture is true. In fact, we provide a 5-star edge coloring of $GP(n,k)$, where $n\geq 2k$ and $d\geq 3$. We also obtain some results for 5-star edge coloring of $GP(n,k)$ with $d=2$. Moreover, Dvo{\v{r}}{\'a}k et al. ({\footnotesize Journal of Graph Theory, 72(3):313-326, 2013}) conjectured that the star of chromatic index of subcubic graphs is at most 6. Thus, our results also prove this conjecture for the generalized Petersen graphs, as a class of subcubic graphs.

A connected graph $G$ of diameter ${\rm diam}(G) \ge \ell$ is $\ell$-distance-balanced if $|W_{xy}|=|W_{yx}|$ for every $x,y\in V(G)$ with $d_{G}(x,y)=\ell$, where $W_{xy}$ is the set of vertices of $G$ that are closer to $x$ than to $y$. It is proved that if $k\ge 3$ and $n>k(k+2)$, then the generalized Petersen graph $GP(n,k)$ is not distance-balanced and that $GP(k(k+2),k)$ is distance-balanced. This significantly improves the main result of Yang et al.\ [Electron.\ J.\ Combin.\ 16 (2009) \#N33]. It is also proved that if $k\ge 6$, where $k$ is even, and $n>\frac{5}{4}k^2+2k$, or if $k\ge 5$, where $k$ is odd, and $n>\frac{7}{4}k^2+\frac{3}{4}k$, then $GP(n,k)$ is not $2$-distance-balanced. These results partially resolve a conjecture of Miklavi\v{c} and \v{S}parl [Discrete Appl.\ Math.\ 244 (2018) 143--154].

Let $t,q$ and $n$ be positive integers. Write $[q] = \{1,2,\ldots,q\}$. The generalized Hamming graph $H(t,q,n)$ is the graph whose vertex set is the cartesian product of $n$ copies of $[q]$$(q\ge 2)$, where two vertices are adjacent if their Hamming distance is at most $t$. In particular, $H(1,q,n)$ is the well-known Hamming graph and $H(1,2,n)$ is the hypercube. In 2006, Chandran and Kavitha described the asymptotic value of $tw(H(1,q,n))$, where $tw(G)$ denotes the treewidth of $G$. In this paper, we give the exact pathwidth of $H(t,2,n)$ and show that $tw(H(t,q,n)) = \Theta(tq^n/\sqrt{n})$ when $n$ goes to infinity. Based on those results, we show that the treewidth of bipartite Kneser graph $BK(n,k)$ is $\binom{n}{k} - 1$ when $n$ is sufficient large relative to $k$ and the bounds of $tw(BK(2k+1,k))$ are given. Moreover, we present the bounds of the treewidth of generalized Petersen graph.

The topological symmetry group $\mathrm{TSG}(\Gamma)$ of an embedding $\Gamma$ of a graph in $S^3$ is the subgroup of the automorphism group of the graph which is induced by homeomorphisms of $(S^3,\Gamma)$. If we restrict to orientation preserving homeomorphisms then we obtain the orientation preserving topological symmetry group $\mathrm{TSG}_+(\Gamma)$. In this paper we determine all groups that can be $\mathrm{TSG}(\Gamma)$ or $\mathrm{TSG}_+(\Gamma)$ for some embedding $\Gamma$ of a generalized Petersen graph other than the exceptional graphs $P(12,5)$ and $P(24, 5)$ (which will be addressed in a separate paper., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures

A normal 5-edge-coloring of a cubic graph is a coloring such that for every edge the number of distinct colors incident to its end-vertices is 3 or 5 (and not 4). The well known Petersen Coloring Conjecture is equivalent to the statement that every bridgeless cubic graph has a normal 5-edge-coloring. All 3-edge-colorings of a cubic graph are obviously normal, so in order to establish the conjecture it is sufficient to consider only snarks. In our previous paper [J. Sedlar, R. \v{S}krekovski, Normal 5-edge-coloring of some snarks superpositioned by the Petersen graph, Applied Mathematics and Computation 467 (2024) 128493], we considered superpositions of any snark G along a cycle C by two simple supervertices and by the superedge obtained from the Petersen graph, but only for some of the possible ways of connecting supervertices and superedges. The boxicity of a graph is the smallest dimension $d$ allowing a representation of it as the intersection graph of a set of $d$-dimensional axis-parallel boxes. We present a simple general approach to determining the boxicity of a graph based on studying its ``interval-order subgraphs''. The power of the method is first tested on the boxicity of some popular graphs that have resisted previous attempts: the boxicity of the Petersen graph is $3$, and more generally, that of the Kneser-graphs $K(n,2)$ is $n-2$ if $n\ge 5$, confirming a conjecture of Caoduro and Lichev [Discrete Mathematics, Vol. 346, 5, 2023]. Since every line graph is an induced subgraph of the complement of $K(n,2)$, the developed tools show furthermore that line graphs have only a polynomial number of edge-maximal interval-order subgraphs. A connected graph $G$ of diameter ${\rm diam}(G) \ge \ell$ is $\ell$-distance-balanced if $|W_{xy}|=|W_{yx}|$ for every $x,y\in V(G)$ with $d_{G}(x,y)=\ell$, where $W_{xy}$ is the set of vertices of $G$ that are closer to $x$ than to $y$. We prove that the generalized Petersen graph $GP(n,3)$ where $n>16$ is not $\ell$-distance-balanced for any $1\le \ell < {\rm diam}(GP(n,3))$, and $GP(n,4)$ where $n>24$ is not $\ell$-distance-balanced for any $1\le \ell < {\rm diam}(GP(n,4))$. The {\em topological symmetry group} of an embedding $\Gamma$ of an abstract graph $\gamma$ in $S^3$ is the group of automorphisms of $\gamma$ which can be realized by homeomorphisms of the pair $(S^3, \Gamma)$. These groups are motivated by questions about the symmetries of molecules in space. The Petersen family of graphs is an important family of graphs for many problems in low dimensional topology, so it is desirable to understand the possible groups of symmetries of their embeddings in space. In this paper, we find all the groups which can be realized as topological symmetry groups for each of the graphs in the Petersen Family. In a (proper) edge-coloring of a bridgeless cubic graph G an edge e is rich (resp. poor) if the number of colors of all edges incident to end-vertices of e is 5 (resp. 3). An edge-coloring of G is is normal if every edge of G is either rich or poor. In this paper we consider snarks ~G obtained by a simple superposition of edges and vertices of a cycle C in a snark G: For an even cycle C we show that a normal coloring of G can be extended to a normal coloring of ~G without changing colors of edges outside C in G: An interesting remark is that this is in general impossible for odd cycles, since the normal coloring of a Petersen graph P10 cannot be extended to a superposition of P10 on a 5-cycle without changing colors outside the 5-cycle. On the other hand, as our colorings of the superpositioned snarks introduce 18 or more poor edges, we are inclined to believe that every bridgeless cubic graph istinct from P10 has a normal coloring with at least one poor edge and possibly with at least 6 if we also exclude the Petersen graph with one vertex truncated., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

Sachs and Conway-Gordon used linking number and a beautiful counting argument to prove that every graph in the Petersen family is intrinsically linked (have a pair of disjoint cycles that form a nonsplit link in every spatial embedding) and thus each family member has no flat spatial embedding (an embedding for which every cycle bounds a disk with interior disjoint from the graph). We give an alternate proof that every Petersen family graph has no flat embedding by applying B\"{o}hme's Lemma and the Jordan-Brouwer Separation Theorem.

A connected graph $G$ of diameter ${\rm diam}(G) \ge \ell$ is $\ell$-distance-balanced if $|W_{xy}|=|W_{yx}|$ for every $x,y\in V(G)$ with $d_{G}(x,y)=\ell$, where $W_{xy}$ is the set of vertices of $G$ that are closer to $x$ than to $y$. We prove that the generalized Petersen graph $GP(n,k)$ is ${\rm diam}(GP(n,k))$-distance-balanced provided that $n$ is large enough relative to $k$. This partially solves a conjecture posed by Miklavi\v{c} and \v{S}parl \cite{Miklavic:2018}. We also determine ${\rm diam}(GP(n,k))$ when $n$ is large enough relative to $k$.

The purpose of this paper is to show that all maximally planar subgraphs of graphs in the Petersen Family have associated conflict graphs unbalanced. All but three strong conflict graphs arising from Petersen Family Graphs are unbalanced, and the three that are balanced all come from $K_{4,4}-e$.

A graph is a core or unretractive if all its endomorphisms are automorphisms. Well-known examples of cores include the Petersen graph and the graph of the dodecahedron -- both generalized Petersen graphs. We characterize the generalized Petersen graphs that are cores. A simple characterization of endomorphism-transitive generalized Petersen graphs follows. This extends the characterization of vertex-transitive generalized Petersen graphs due to Frucht, Graver, and Watkins and solves a problem of Fan and Xie. Moreover, we study generalized Petersen graphs that are (underlying graphs of) Cayley graphs of monoids. We show that this is the case for the Petersen graph, answering a recent mathoverflow question, for the Desargues graphs, and for the dodecahedron -- answering a question of Knauer and Knauer. Moreover, we characterize the infinite family of generalized Petersen graphs that are Cayley graph of a monoid with generating connection set of size two. This extends Nedela and \v{S}koviera's characterization of generalized Petersen graphs that are group Cayley graphs and complements results of Hao, Gao, and Luo., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

This paper studies Cheeger deformations on $\mathrm{S}^3, \mathrm{SO}(3)$ principal bundles to obtain conditions for positive sectional curvature submersion metrics. We conclude, in particular, a stronger version of the Petersen--Wilhelm fiber dimension conjecture to the class of principal bundles. We prove any $\pi: \mathrm{SO}(3), \mathrm{S}^3 \hookrightarrow \cal P \rightarrow B$ principal bundle over a positively curved base admits a metric of positive sectional curvature if, and only if, the submersion is fat, in particular, $\dim B \geq 4$. The proof combines the concept of ``good triples'' due to Munteanu and Tapp \cite{tappmunteanu2}, with a Chaves--Derdzisnki--Rigas type condition to nonnegative curvature. The $P_3$-hull number of a graph is the minimum cardinality of an infecting set of vertices that will eventually infect the entire graph under the rule that uninfected nodes become infected if two or more neighbors are infected. In this paper, we study the $P_3$-hull number for generalized Petersen graphs and a number of closely related graphs that arise from surgery or more generalized permutations. In addition, the number of components of the complement of an infecting set of minimum cardinality is calculated for the generalized Petersen graph and shown to always be $1$ or $2$. A signed graph $\Sigma=(G,\sigma)$ is said to be parity signed if there exists a bijection $f : V(G) \rightarrow \{1,2,...,|V(G)|\}$ such that $\sigma(uv)=+$ if and only if $f(u)$ and $f(v)$ are of same parity, where $uv$ is an edge of $G$. The rna number of a graph $G$, denoted $\sigma^{-}(G)$, is the minimum number of negative edges among all possible parity signed graphs over $G$. The rna number is also equal to the minimum cut size that has nearly equal sides. In this paper, for generalized Petersen graph $P(n,k)$, we prove that $3 \leq \sigma^{-}(P(n,k)) \leq n$ and these bounds are sharp. The exact value of $\sigma^{-}(P(n,k))$ is determined for $k=1,2$. Some famous generalized Petersen graphs namely, Petersen graph $P(5,2)$, Durer graph $P(6,2)$, Mobius-Kantor graph $P(8,3)$, Dodecahedron $P(10,2)$, Desargues graph $P(10,3)$ and Nauru graph $P(12,5)$ are also treated. We show that the minimum order of a $(4n-1)$-regular graph having rna number one is bounded above by $12n-2$. The sharpness of this upper bound is also shown for $n=1$. We also show that the minimum order of a $(4n+1)$-regular graph having rna number one is $8n+6$. Finally, for any simple connected graph of order $n$, we propose an $O(2^n + n^{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor})$ time algorithm for computing its rna number.

Harary et al. and Klein and Randic proposed the forcing number of a perfect matching in mathematics and chemistry, respectively. In detail, the forcing number of a perfect matching M of a graph G is the smallest cardinality of subsets of M that are contained in no other perfect matchings of G. The author and cooperators defined the forcing polynomial of G as the count polynomial for perfect matchings with the same forcing number of G, from which the average forcing number, forcing spectrum, and the maximum and minimum forcing numbers of G can be obtained. Up to now, a few papers have been considered on matching forcing problem of non-plane non-bipartite graphs. The anti-Ramsey number $Ar(G,H)$ is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of $G$ with no rainbow copy of $H$. In this paper, we determine the exact anti-Ramsey number in the generalized Petersen graph $P_{n,k}$ for cycles $C_d$, where $1\leq k\leq \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2} \rfloor$ and $5\le d \le 6$. We also give an algorithm to obtain the upper bound or lower bound of anti-Ramsey number.

If $f:\mathbb{N}\rightarrow \mathbb{N}$ is a function, then let us say that $f$ is sublinear if \[\lim_{n\rightarrow +\infty}\frac{f(n)}{n}=0.\] If $G=(V,E)$ is a cubic graph and $c:E\rightarrow \{1,...,k\}$ is a proper $k$-edge-coloring of $G$, then an edge $e=uv$ of $G$ is poor (rich) in $c$, if the edges incident to $u$ and $v$ are colored with three (five) colors. An edge is abnormal if it is neither rich nor poor. The Petersen coloring conjecture of Jaeger states that any bridgeless cubic graph admits a proper 5-edge-coloring $c$, such that there is no an abnormal edge of $G$ with respect to $c$. For a proper 5-edge-coloring $c$ of $G$, let $N_G(c)$ be the set of abnormal edges of $G$ with respect to $c$. In this paper we show that (a) The Petersen coloring conjecture is equivalent to the statement that there is a sublinear function $f:\mathbb{N}\rightarrow \mathbb{N}$, such that all bridgeless cubic graphs admit a proper 5-edge-coloring $c$ with $|N_G(c)|\leq f(|V|)$; (b) for $k=2,3,4$, the statement that there is a sublinear function $f:\mathbb{N}\rightarrow \mathbb{N}$, such that all (cyclically) $k$-edge-connected cubic graphs admit a proper 5-edge-coloring $c$ with $|N_G(c)|\leq f(|V|)$ is equivalent to the statement that all (cyclically) $k$-edge-connected cubic graphs admit a proper 5-edge-coloring $c$ with $|N_G(c)|\leq 2k+1$., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Due to their broad application to different fields of theory and practice, generalized Petersen graphs $GPG(n,s)$ have been extensively investigated. Despite the regularity of generalized Petersen graphs, determining an exact formula for the diameter is still a difficult problem. In their paper, Beenker and Van Lint have proved that if the circulant graph $C_n(1,s)$ has diameter $d$, then $GPG(n,s)$ has diameter at least $d+1$ and at most $d+2$. In this paper, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions so that the diameter of $GPG(n,s)$ is equal to $d+1,$ and sufficient conditions so that the diameter of $GPG(n,s)$ is equal to $d+2.$ Afterwards, we give exact values for the diameter of $GPG(n,s)$ for almost all cases of $n$ and $s.$ Furthermore, we show that there exists an algorithm computing the diameter of generalized Petersen graphs with running time $O$(log$n$)., Comment: We found much general results we want to add to this work

The crossing number of a graph $G$ in a surface $\Sigma$, denoted by $cr_{\Sigma}(G)$, is the minimum number of pairwise intersections of edges in a drawing of $G$ in $\Sigma$. Let $k$ be an integer satisfying $k\geq 3$, the generalized Petersen graph $P(3k,k)$ is the graph with vertex set $V(P(3k,k))=\{u_i, v_i| i=1,2,\cdots,3k\}$ and edge set $E(P(3k,k))=\{u_iu_{i+1}, u_iv_i, v_iv_{k+i}| i=1,2,\cdots,3k\},$ the subscripts are read modulo $3k.$ This paper investigates the crossing number of $P(3k,k)$ in the projective plane. We determine the exact value of $cr_{N_1}(P(3k,k))$ is $k-2$ when $3\le k\le 7,$ moreover, for $k\ge 8,$ we get that $k-2\le cr_{N_1}(P(3k,k))\le k-1.$

We show that if $n=7k/i$ with $i \in \{1,2,3\}$ then the cop number of the generalised Petersen graph $GP(n,k)$ is $4$, with some small previously-known exceptions. It was previously proved by Ball et al. (2015) that the cop number of any generalised Petersen graph is at most $4$. The results in this paper explain all of the known generalised Petersen graphs that actually have cop number $4$ but were not previously explained by Morris et al. in a recent preprint, and places them in the context of infinite families. A generalized Petersen graph $GP(n,k)$ is a regular cubic graph on $2n$ vertices (the parameter $k$ is used to define some of the edges). It was previously shown (Ball et al., 2015) that the cop number of $GP(n,k)$ is at most $4$, for all permissible values of $n$ and $k$. In this paper we prove that the cop number of "most" generalized Petersen graphs is exactly $4$. More precisely, we show that unless $n$ and $k$ fall into certain specified categories, then the cop number of $GP(n,k)$ is $4$. The graphs to which our result applies all have girth $8$. In fact, our argument is slightly more general: we show that in any cubic graph of girth at least $8$, unless there exist two cycles of length $8$ whose intersection is a path of length $2$, then the cop number of the graph is at least $4$. It is known that the problem of computing the edge dimension of a graph is NP-hard, and that the edge dimension of any generalized Petersen graph $P(n,k)$ is at least 3. In a graph $G=(V,E)$, each vertex $v\in V$ is labelled with $0$, $1$ or $2$ such that each vertex labelled with $0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex labelled $2$ or two vertices labelled $1$. Such kind of labelling is called an Italian dominating function (IDF) of $G$. The weight of an IDF $f$ is $w(f)=\sum_{v\in V}f(v)$. The Italian domination number of $G$ is $\gamma_{I}(G)=\min_{f} w(f)$. Gao et al. (2019) have determined the value of $\gamma_I(P(n,3))$. In this article, we focus on the study of the Italian domination number of generalized Petersen graphs $P(n, k)$, $k\neq3$. We determine the values of $\gamma_I(P(n, 1))$, $\gamma_I(P(n, 2))$ and $\gamma_I(P(n, k))$ for $k\ge4$, $k\equiv2,3(\bmod5)$ and $n\equiv0(\bmod5)$. For other $P(n,k)$, we present a bound of $\gamma_I(P(n, k))$. With the obtained results, we partially solve the open problem presented by Bre\v{s}ar et al. (2007) by giving $P(n,1)$ is an example for which $\gamma_I=\gamma_{r2}$ and characterizing $P(n,2)$ for which $\gamma_I(P(n,2))=\gamma_{r2}(P(n,2))$. Moreover, our results imply $P(n,1)$ $(n\equiv0(\bmod\ 4))$ is Italian, $P(n,1)$ $(n\not\equiv0(\bmod\ 4))$ and $P(n,2)$ are not Italian.

The Petersen colouring conjecture states that every bridgeless cubic graph admits an edge-colouring with $5$ colours such that for every edge $e$, the set of colours assigned to the edges adjacent to $e$ has cardinality either $2$ or $4$, but not $3$. We prove that every bridgeless cubic graph $G$ admits an edge-colouring with $4$ colours such that at most $\frac45\cdot|V(G)|$ edges do not satisfy the above condition. This bound is tight and the Petersen graph is the only connected graph for which the bound cannot be decreased. We obtain such a $4$-edge-colouring by using a carefully chosen subset of edges of a perfect matching, and the analysis relies on a simple discharging procedure with essentially no reductions and very few rules., Comment: Submitted to a journal on February, 15th 2019

Rubei et. al., established results for the distance matrix of positive weighted Petersen graphs. Focusing on the properties of the distance matrix, we generalized positive weighted Petersen graphs results to Kneser graphs. We analyzed theorems established by Rubei et al. and used girth of the generalized Petersen graphs and Kneser graphs to conclude generalizations. Further, we examined the properties of positive weighted generalized Petersen graphs. The canonical double cover $\D(\Gamma)$ of a graph $\Gamma$ is the direct product of $\Gamma$ and $K_2$. If $\Aut(\D(\Gamma))\cong\Aut(\Gamma)\times\ZZ_2$ then $\Gamma$ is called stable; otherwise $\Gamma$ is called unstable. An unstable graph is said to be nontrivially unstable if it is connected, non-bipartite and no two vertices have the same neighborhood. In 2008 Wilson conjectured that, if the generalized Petersen graph $\GP(n,k)$ is nontrivially unstable, then both $n$ and $k$ are even, and either $n/2$ is odd and $k^2\equiv\pm 1 \pmod{n/2}$, or $n=4k$. In this note we prove that this conjecture is true. At the same time we determine all possible isomorphisms among the generalized Petersen graphs, the canonical double covers of the generalized Petersen graphs, and the double generalized Petersen graphs. Based on these we completely determine the full automorphism group of the canonical double cover of $\GP(n,k)$ for any pair of integers $n, k$ with $1 \leqslant k < n/2$., Comment: This is the final version that will appear in Journal of Graph Theory

A coprime labeling of a graph of order $n$ is an assignment of distinct positive integer labels in which adjacent vertices have relatively prime labels. Restricting labels to only the set $1$ to $n$ results in a prime labeling. In this paper, we consider families of graphs in which a prime labeling cannot exist with the goal being to minimize the largest value of the labeling set, resulting in a minimum coprime labeling. In particular, prism graphs, generalized Petersen graphs with $k=2$, and stacked prism graphs are investigated for minimum coprime labelings.

In a graph $G$, a vertex dominates itself and its neighbors. A subset $D \subseteq V(G)$ is a double dominating set of $G$ if $D$ dominates every vertex of $G$ at least twice. A signed graph $\Sigma = (G,\sigma)$ is a graph $G$ together with an assignment $\sigma$ of positive or negative signs to all its edges. A cycle in a signed graph is positive if the product of its edge signs is positive. A signed graph is balanced if all its cycles are positive. A subset $D \subseteq V(\Sigma)$ is a double dominating set of $\Sigma$ if it satisfies the following conditions: (i) $D$ is a double dominating set of $G$, and (ii) $\Sigma[D:V \setminus D]$ is balanced, where $\Sigma[D:V \setminus D]$ is the subgraph of $\Sigma$ induced by the edges of $\Sigma$ with one end point in $D$ and the other end point in $V \setminus D$. The cardinality of a minimum double dominating set of $\Sigma$ is the double domination number $\gamma_{\times 2}(\Sigma)$. In this paper, we give bounds for the double domination number of signed cubic graphs.
