Abstract Hyperaccumulating plants are able to (hyper)accumulate high concentrations of metal(loid)s in their above-ground tissues without any signs of toxicity. Studies on the root-associated microbiome have been previously conducted in relation to hyperaccumulators, yet much remains unknown about the interactions between hyperaccumulating hosts and their microbiomes, as well as the dynamics within these microbial communities. Here, we assess the impact of the plant host on shaping microbial communities of three naturally occurring populations of Noccaea species in Slovenia: Noccaea praecox and co-occurring N. caerulescens from the non-metalliferous site and N. praecox from the metalliferous site. We investigated the effect of metal enrichment on microbial communities and explored the interactions within microbial groups and their environment. The abundance of bacterial phyla was more homogeneous than fungal classes across all three Noccaea populations and across the three root-associated compartments (roots, rhizosphere, and bulk soil). While most fungal and bacterial Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) were found at both sites, the metalliferous site comprised more unique OTUs in the root and rhizosphere compartments than the non-metalliferous site. In contrast to fungi, bacteria exhibited differentially significant abundance between the metalliferous and non-metalliferous sites as well as statistically significant correlations with most of the soil parameters. Results revealed N. caerulescens had the highest number of negative correlations between the bacterial phyla, whereas the population from the metalliferous site had the fewest. This decrease was accompanied by a big perturbation in the bacterial community at the metalliferous site, indicating increased selection between the bacterial taxa and the formation of potentially less stable rhizobiomes. These findings provide fundamentals for future research on the dynamics between hyperaccumulators and their associated microbiome.

Razveselili smo se, ko je konec leta 1999 izšla nova knjiga o izobraževanju odraslih na Hrvaškem. Vemo, da izobraževanje odraslih hitro zaniha in da je občutljivo na družbene ter politične spremembe. Marsikaj, kar je bilo na Hrvaškem na področju andragogike že zelo razvito, je v zadnjem desetletju nazadovalo. Nova knjiga in nekateri raziskovalni projekti pa dokazujejo, da sta andragoška praksa in teorija že premagali krizo in da sta spet zaživeli.

5. Povezanost psiholoških dejavnikov z učinkovitostjo telemedicine pri nosečnostni sladkorni bolezni

Izhodišča: Telemedicina lahko izboljša glikemične in porodne izide nosečnostne sladkorne bolezni (NSB), čeprav še ni jasno, za katere posameznice naj bi bila telemedicinska orodja najbolj primerna. Namen naše raziskave je bil preveriti povezavo nekaterih psiholoških dejavnikov z glikemičnimi parametri pri ženskah z NSB, ki smo jih spremljali s telemedicinsko obravnavo. Analizirati smo želeli zadovoljstvo nosečnic s telemedicinsko obravnavo in opredeliti osebnostne značilnosti žensk, ki jim telemedicinska obravnava bolj ustreza. Metode: Vključene nosečnice so izpolnile Vprašalnik Velikih pet (angl. Big Five Inventory, BFI) in Vprašalnik o opolnomočenju v zvezi z vodenjem sladkorne bolezni (angl. Diabetes Empowerment Scale, DES). Podatke o samomeritvah koncentracije glukoze v krvi smo pridobili iz glukometrov. Povezanost med spremenljivkami smo izračunali s Spearmanovim koeficientom korelacije (Spearman ρ). Rezultati: V raziskavo je bilo vključenih 50 žensk (starost 32,0 ± 4,3 let) z NSB, ki so bile vodene telemedicinsko. Od osebnostnih dimenzij sta bili sprejemljivost (Spearman ρ=0.422, p=0.003) in vestnost (Spearman ρ = 0.346, p = 0.016) pozitivno povezani s skupno realizacijo meritev glukoze v krvi. Ugotovili smo povezavo med povprečno koncentracijo glukoze v krvi po obrokih in skupnim dosežkom pri Vprašalniku DES (Spearman q = 0.324, p = 0.030) ter dvema podlestvicama, tj. Obvladovanjem psihosocialnih vidikov NSB (Spearman q = 0.326, p = 0.029) in Nezadovoljstvom in pripravljenostjo na spremembe (Spearman q = 0.363, p = 0.014). Zaključek: Naši rezultati predstavljajo korak k opredelitvi skupka psiholoških značilnosti žensk z NSB, ki bi lahko bil pomemben napovednik učinkovitosti telemedicinske obravnave. Potrebne so še nadaljnje raziskave, tudi o drugih psiholoških vidikih.

6. Species-Specific and Pollution-Induced Changes in Gene Expression and Metabolome of Closely Related Noccaea Species Under Natural Conditions

Hyperaccumulators within the Noccaea genus possess many promising genetic and metabolic adaptations that could be potentially exploited to support phytoremediation efforts and/or crop improvement and biofortification. Although hyperaccumulation is very common in this genus, individual species display specific traits as they can accumulate different elements (e.g., zinc, cadmium, and/or nickel). Moreover, there appears to be some populational variability with natural selection increasing the metal tolerance in metallicolous populations. Therefore, employing robust methods, such as integrated analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome, is crucial for uncovering pivotal candidate genes and pathways orchestrating the response to metal stress in Noccaea hyperaccumulators. Our study highlights several species-specific traits linked to the detoxification of metals and metal-induced oxidative stress in hyperaccumulating N. praecox when compared to a closely related model species, N. caerulescens, when grown in the field. Transcriptome analysis revealed distinct differences between the three studied natural Noccaea populations. Notably, we observed several pathways frequently connected to metal stress, i.e., glutathione metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and flavonoid biosynthesis, which were enriched. These differences were observed despite the relative evolutionary closeness of studied species, which emphasizes the importance of further expanding our knowledge on hyperaccumulators if we want to exploit their mechanisms for phytoremediation efforts or food quality improvements.

7. Comparative Study of GPR Acquisition Methods for Shallow Buried Object Detection

This paper investigates the use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technology for detecting shallow buried objects, utilizing an air-coupled stepped frequency continuous wave (SFCW) radar system that operates within a 2 GHz bandwidth starting at 500 MHz. Different GPR data acquisition methods for air-coupled systems are compared, specifically down-looking, side-looking, and circular acquisition strategies, employing the back projection algorithm to provide focusing of the acquired GPR data. Experimental results showed that the GPR can penetrate up to 0.6 m below the surface in a down-looking mode. The developed radar and the back projection focusing algorithm were used to acquire data in the side-looking and circular mode, providing focused images with a resolution of 0.1 m and detecting subsurface objects up to 0.3 m below the surface. The proposed approach transforms B-scans of the GPR-based data into 2D images. The provided approach has significant potential for advancing shallow object detection capabilities by transforming hyperbola-based features into point-like features.

9. De novo transcriptome assembly of hyperaccumulating Noccaea praecox for gene discovery

Abstract Hyperaccumulators are a group of plant species that accumulate high concentrations of one or more metal(loid)s in their above-ground tissues without showing any signs of toxicity. Several hyperaccumulating species belong to the Brassicaceae family, among them the Cd and Zn hyperaccumulator Noccaea praecox. In this paper, we present de novo transcriptome assembled from two naturally occurring N. praecox populations growing in (i) metal-enriched soil and (ii) soil non-contaminated with metals (control site). Total RNA was extracted from the leaves of both populations. We obtained 801,935,101 reads, which were successfully assembled and annotated. The resulting assembly contains 135,323 transcripts, with 103,396 transcripts (76.4%) annotated with at least one function and encoding 53,142 putative proteins. Due to its close relationship with the hyperaccumulating model species N. cearulescens, it will be possible to derive protein functions from sequence comparisons with this species. Comparisons will highlight common and differing pathways of metal acquisition, storage, and detoxification which will allow us to expand our knowledge of these processes.

Agriculture is facing challenges to produce more food in a climate scenario that works in the opposite direction. To amend this, agriculture has to invent new ways of making more with less. Interest in using by-products and finding new ways to utilize them has been increasing in recent years. The use of protein-rich sources for protein hydrolyzation and the use of these protein hydrolysates as biostimulants in plant production have been increasing. These mixtures are mainly produced by chemical and enzymatic hydrolysis from agro-industrial protein-rich by-products of animal, plant, and algal origins. The application of PHs has the potential to alleviate environmental stress; improve plant growth; and increase productivity, fruit yield, and abiotic-stress tolerance in agricultural crops. The use of these biostimulants offers a way to reduce the use of agrochemicals and agrees with the “do more with less” task in the future of agricultural production. This review gives an insight into the production of PHs, referring to sources of raw materials and methods of hydrolysis, the uptake and translocation of PHs, their effect on plant growth, the development and physiology, their role in alleviating stressful conditions, and their use in agriculture. The beneficial effects of PHs on different aspects of plant physiology, metabolism, and plant functioning under stressful conditions are evident. Inconveniently, crops, and sometimes even cultivars, are affected differently based on the way that PH is applied, the timing, and the concentration applied. Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms by which the components of PHs modify plant physiology and metabolism.

The main objective of this pilot study was to compare the effects of short-term supplementation with a mixture containing creatine and guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) versus creatine alone on body composition indices in men and women. Twenty-three apparently healthy young adults (mean age: 21.4 ± 0.6 years; 10 females) were randomly assigned to receive either a mixture (consisting of 2 g of creatine monohydrate and 2 g of GAA) or an equimolar amount of creatine monohydrate in a pretest–posttest control group experimental crossover design. After the intervention period, participants entered a 2-week washout phase to minimize any residual effects of the treatment. Body composition was assessed using a multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis at baseline (preadministration) and at the 7-day follow-up (postadministration). A significant interaction effect was found for extracellular mass (p=0.009), with creatine–GAA outperforming creatine in augmenting extracellular mass across the whole sample. In the male subsample, creatine was superior to the mixture in increasing intracellular water (p=0.049), whereas the mixture increased extracellular mass, contrasting with the reduction observed with creatine alone (p=0.008). No significant differences between interventions were reported in the female subsample (p>0.05), indicating that adding GAA to creatine may produce unique, sex-specific effects on body composition. Further studies are needed to validate our findings across different demographic cohorts and various interventional regimens.

Abstract Lifecourse nutrition encompasses nourishment from early development into parenthood. From preconception and pregnancy to childhood, late adolescence, and reproductive years, life course nutrition explores links between dietary exposures and health outcomes in current and future generations from a public health perspective, usually addressing lifestyle behaviours, reproductive well‐being and maternal‐child health strategies. However, nutritional factors that play a role in conceiving and sustaining new life might also require a molecular perspective and recognition of critical interactions between specific nutrients and relevant biochemical pathways. The present perspective summarises evidence about the links between diet during periconception and next‐generation health and outlines the main metabolic networks involved in nutritional biology of this sensitive time frame.

Gestational diabetes (GDM) is one of the most common complications in pregnancy, with a prevalence that continues to rise. However, the success of the treatment is unknown. We therefore aimed to evaluate COVID-19 epidemic effects on pregnancy outcomes in GDM.

(1) Background: Central nervous system (CNS) development is characterized by dynamic changes in cell proliferation and differentiation. Key regulators of these transitions are the transcription factors such as SOX2 and SOX9. SOX2 is involved in the maintenance of progenitor cell state and neural stem cell multipotency, while SOX9, expressed in neurogenic niches, plays an important role in neuron/glia switch with predominant expression in astrocytes in the adult brain. (2) Methods: To validate SOX2 and SOX9 expression patterns in developing opossum (Monodelphis domestica) cortex, we used immunohistochemistry (IHC) and the isotropic fractionator method on fixed cortical tissue from comparable postnatal ages, as well as dissociated primary neuronal cultures. (3) Results: Neurons positive for both neuronal (TUJ1 or NeuN) and stem cell (SOX2) markers were identified, and their presence was confirmed with all methods and postnatal age groups (P4-6, P6-18, and P30) analyzed. SOX9 showed exclusive staining in non-neuronal cells, and it was coexpressed with SOX2. (4) Conclusions: The persistence of SOX2 expression in developing cortical neurons of M. domestica during the first postnatal month implies the functional role of SOX2 during neuronal differentiation and maturation, which was not previously reported in opossums.

18. Exploring the potential of cold plasma treatment followed by zinc-priming for biofortification of buckwheat sprouts

Increasing the concentration of an element in edible produce (i.e., biofortification) can mitigate the element deficiency in humans. Sprouts are small but popular part of healthy diets providing vitamins and essential elements throughout the year. Element composition of sprouts can easily be amended, e.g., by soaking the grains in element-rich solution before germination (grain-priming). In addition, pre-treatment of grains to improve element translocation from the solution into the grain may further enhance the element concentration in the sprout. Cold plasma technique could provide such solution, as it increases wettability and water uptake of grains. Grains of common buckwheat (Fogopyrum esculentum Moench) were pre-treated/ untreated with cold plasma and soaked in ZnCl2 solution/pure water. Germination tests, α-amylase activity, grain hydrophilic properties and water uptake were assessed. Element composition of grain tissues and of sprouts was assessed by micro-particle-induced-X-ray emission and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, respectively. Grain-priming increased Zn concentration in shoots of common buckwheat sprouts more than five-times, namely from 79 to 423 mg Zn kg−1 dry weight. Cold plasma treatment increased grain wettability and water uptake into the grain. However, cold plasma pre-treatment followed by grain-priming with ZnCl2 did not increase Zn concentration in different grain tissues or in the sprouts more than the priming alone, but rather decreased the Zn concentration in sprout shoots (average ± standard error: 216 ± 6.13 and 174 ± 7.57 mg Zn kg−1 dry weight, respectively). When the fresh weight portion of whole sprouts (i.e., of roots and shoots) was considered, comparable average requirements of Zn, namely 24.5 % and 35 % for adult men and women would be satisfied by consuming cold plasma pre-treated and not pre-treated grains. Potential advantages of cold plasma pre-treatment need to be tested further, mainly to optimize the duration of soaking required to produce Zn-enriched sprouts.

Type 1 diabetes is a challenging disease, characterized by dynamic changes in the insulin need during life periods, seasons of the year, but also by everyday situations. In particular, changes in insulin need are evident before, during and after exercise and having meals. In the midst of different life demands, it can be very burdensome to achieve tight glycemic control to prevent late diabetes complications, and at the same time, to avoid hypoglycemia. Consequently, many individuals with type 1 diabetes are faced with diabetes distress, decreasing profoundly their quality of life. Today, the nationwide Finnish Diabetic Nephropathy (FinnDiane) Study, launched in 1997, has gathered data from more than 8,000 well-characterized individuals with type 1 diabetes, recruited from 93 centers all over Finland and has established its position as the world’s leading project on studying complications in individuals with type 1 diabetes. Studying risk factors and mechanisms of diabetes complications is inconceivable without trying to understand the effects of exercise and nutrition on glycemic control and the development of diabetes complications. Therefore, in this paper we provide findings regarding food and exercise, accumulated during the 25 years of studying lives of Finnish people with type 1 diabetes.

21. Despeckling of SAR Images Using Residual Twin CNN and Multi-Resolution Attention Mechanism

The despeckling of synthetic aperture radar images using two different convolutional neural network architectures is presented in this paper. The first method presents a novel Siamese convolutional neural network with a dilated convolutional network in each branch. Recently, attention mechanisms have been introduced to convolutional networks to better model and recognize features. Therefore, we propose a novel design for a convolutional neural network using an attention mechanism for an encoder–decoder-type network. The framework consists of a multiscale spatial attention network to improve the modeling of semantic information at different spatial levels and an additional attention mechanism to optimize feature propagation. Both proposed methods are different in design but they provide comparable despeckling results in subjective and objective measurements in terms of correlated speckle noise. The experimental results are evaluated on both synthetically generated speckled images and real SAR images. The methods proposed in this paper are able to despeckle SAR images and preserve SAR features.

Abstract Phosphorus (P) and zinc (Zn) uptake and its physiological use in plants are interconnected and are tightly controlled. However, there is still conflicting information about the interactions of these two nutrients, thus a better understanding of nutritional homeostasis is needed. The objective of this work was to evaluate responses of photosynthesis parameters, P-Zn nutritional homeostasis and antioxidant metabolism to variation in the P × Zn supply of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Plants were grown in pots and watered with nutrient solution containing combinations of P and Zn supply. An excess of either P or Zn limited plant growth, reduced photosynthesis-related parameters, and antioxidant scavenging enzymes. Phosphorus uptake favoured photochemical dissipation of energy decreasing oxidative stress, notably on Zn-well-nourished plants. On the other hand, excessive P uptake reduces Zn-shoot concentration and decreasing carbonic anhydrase activity. Adequate Zn supply facilitated adaptation responses to P deficiency, upregulating acid phosphatase activity, whereas Zn and P excess were alleviated by increasing P and Zn supply, respectively. Collectively, the results showed that inter ionic effects of P and Zn uptake affected light use and CO2 assimilation rate on photosynthesis, activation of antioxidant metabolism, acid phosphatase and carbonic anhydrase activities, and plant growth-related responses to different extents.

26. Cross-Hole GPR for Soil Moisture Estimation Using Deep Learning

This paper presents the design of a high-voltage pulse-based radar and a supervised data processing method for soil moisture estimation. The goal of this research was to design a pulse-based radar to detect changes in soil moisture using a cross-hole approach. The pulse-based radar with three transmitting antennas was placed into a 12 m deep hole, and a receiver with three receive antennas was placed into a different hole separated by 100 m from the transmitter. The pulse generator was based on a Marx generator with an LC filter, and for the receiver, the high-frequency data acquisition card was used, which can acquire signals using 3 Gigabytes per second. Used borehole antennas were designed to operate in the wide frequency band to ensure signal propagation through the soil. A deep regression convolutional network is proposed in this paper to estimate volumetric soil moisture using time-sampled signals. A regression convolutional network is extended to three dimensions to model changes in wave propagation between the transmitted and received signals. The training dataset was acquired during the period of 73 days of acquisition between two boreholes separated by 100 m. The soil moisture measurements were acquired at three points 25 m apart to provide ground truth data. Additionally, water was poured into several specially prepared boreholes between transmitter and receiver antennas to acquire additional dataset for training, validation, and testing of convolutional neural networks. Experimental results showed that the proposed system is able to detect changes in the volumetric soil moisture using Tx and Rx antennas.

Abstract Background Phosphorus (P) deficiency limits crop production worldwide. Crops differ in their ability to acquire and utilise the P available. The aim of this study was to determine root traits (root exudates, root system architecture (RSA), tissue-specific allocation of P, and gene expression in roots) that (a) play a role in P-use efficiency and (b) contribute to large shoot zinc (Zn) concentration in Brassica oleracea. Results Two B. oleracea accessions (var. sabellica C6, a kale, and var. italica F103, a broccoli) were grown in a hydroponic system or in a high-throughput-root phenotyping (HTRP) system where they received Low P (0.025 mM) or High P (0.25 mM) supply for 2 weeks. In hydroponics, root and shoot P and Zn concentrations were measured, root exudates were profiled using both Fourier-Transform-Infrared spectroscopy and gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry and previously published RNAseq data from roots was re-examined. In HTRP experiments, RSA (main and lateral root number and lateral root length) was assessed and the tissue-specific distribution of P was determined using micro-particle-induced-X-ray emission. The C6 accession had greater root and shoot biomass than the F103 accession, but the latter had a larger shoot P concentration than the C6 accession, regardless of the P supply in the hydroponic system. The F103 accession had a larger shoot Zn concentration than the C6 accession in the High P treatment. Although the F103 accession had a larger number of lateral roots, which were also longer than in the C6 accession, the C6 accession released a larger quantity and number of polar compounds than the F103 accession. A larger number of P-responsive genes were found in the Low P treatment in roots of the F103 accession than in roots of the C6 accession. Expression of genes linked with “phosphate starvation” was up-regulated, while those linked with iron homeostasis were down-regulated in the Low P treatment. Conclusions The results illustrate large within-species variability in root acclimatory responses to P supply in the composition of root exudates, RSA and gene expression, but not in P distribution in root cross sections, enabling P sufficiency in the two B. oleracea accessions studied.

With shorter wavelengths than microwaves and greater penetration depth than infrared light, waves in the terahertz spectrum offer unique material testing opportunities. Terahertz technology offers non-invasive and non-destructive testing in the form of spectroscopy and imaging. The most used systems for terahertz imaging are time-domain spectroscopy systems. However, frequency domain spectroscopy systems could offer excellent frequency resolution and be more suitable for biomedical applications. Terahertz imaging based on frequency domain spectroscopy systems is slow, and suffers from frequency tuning errors. A novel one-dimensional imaging principle is presented in this paper. In addition, frequency range optimization based on convolutional neural networks and occlusion sensitivity is utilized for frequency range optimization. Frequency range optimization is used to determine the optimal frequency range for data acquisition. The optimal frequency range or bandwidth should be wide enough for effective phase detection, and should be at the intersection of several spectral footprints in the observed medium. The intersection of spectral footprints is estimated using the proposed frequency range optimization algorithm based on a convolutional neural network and occlusion sensitivity algorithm. The proposed algorithm selects the most sensitive frequency band of THz spectrum automatically, and enables very fast acquisitions for object inspection and classification.

Reactive postprandial hypoglycemia (RPH) is an understudied condition that lacks clinical definition, knowledge of future health implications, and an understanding of precise underlying mechanisms. Therefore, our study aimed to assess the glycemic response after glucose ingestion in individuals several years after the initial evaluation of RPH and to compare glucose regulation in individuals with RPH vs. healthy volunteers. We assessed the inter- and intra-individual differences in glucose, insulin, and C-peptide concentrations during 5-h oral glucose tolerance tests (OGTTs); the surrogate markers of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR and Matsuda index); and beta-cell function (distribution index and insulinogenic index). The study included 29 subjects with RPH (all females, aged 39 (28, 46) years) and 11 sex-, age-, and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls. No biochemical deterioration of beta-cell secretory capacity and no progression to dysglycemia after 6.4 ± 4.2 years of follow-up were detected. RPH subjects were not insulin resistant, and their insulin sensitivity did not deteriorate. RPH subjects exhibited no differences in concentrations or in the shape of the glucose-insulin curves during the 5-h OGTTs compared to age- and BMI-matched controls. No increased incident type 2 diabetes risk indices were evident in individuals with RPH. This dictates the need for further research to investigate the magnitude of future diabetes risk in individuals experiencing RPH.

This article addresses Croatian scholars’ information behavior and how they use technology to acquire information in three areas of their work: teaching, research, and administrative activities. Our study aims to find which communication channels scholars utilize to find and share knowledge. Are they using communication channels targeting a broader audience, i.e., formal–explicit communication, or those targeting a narrower one, i.e., informal–implicit communication? The questionnaire used included four questions regarding scholar activities, with nine possible communication channels, scored on a seven-point Likert scale. Considering many channels for each area of activity, a reduction was made through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), to determine latent components in various channels. In finding information for teaching activities, the main communication channel is informal and implicit, while for research and administrative activities, it is formal and explicit. PCA shows a distinction between social and technical domains of science in terms of how scholars collect material for administrative tasks. A further communication channel is reduced to two factors for all questions, where the first factor has formal–explicit and the second has informal–implicit characteristics. This work is part of a larger study aimed at determining the mechanisms of information diffusion within academic institutions, utilizing the Information space model.

33. Carbohydrate Intake and Closed-Loop Insulin Delivery System during Two Subsequent Pregnancies in Type 1 Diabetes

Carbohydrate intake is one of the main determinants of glycemic control. In pregnancy, achievement of tight glycemic control is of utmost importance; however, data on the role of hybrid closed-loop systems (HCLs) in pregnancy are scarce. Therefore, we aimed to assess glycemic control achieved through the use of HCLs, and its association with carbohydrate intake in type 1 diabetes pregnancy. We included data from women with a sensor-augmented pump (SAP) during their first pregnancy and HCL use during the subsequent pregnancy. Student’s paired t-test was used to compare data between both pregnancies. Six women were identified, with age 30.2 ± 3.6 vs. 33.0 ± 3.6 years, diabetes duration 23 ± 5 vs. 26 ± 5 years, and baseline HbA1c 6.7 ± 0.7% (50.1 ± 7.7 mmol/mol) vs. 6.3 ± 0.6% (45.2 ± 6.5 mmol/moll) in the first and second pregnancies, respectively. Time with glucose in the range 3.5–7.8 mmol/L was 69.1 ± 6.7 vs. 78.6 ± 7.4%, p = 0.045, with the HCLs compared to SAP. Higher meal frequency, but not the amount of carbohydrate consumption, was associated with more time spent in the target range and lower glycemic variability. HCLs and meal frequency were associated with better glycemic control in a small series of pregnant women with type 1 diabetes. Whether this translates to better perinatal outcomes remains to be seen.

Up to date, there are no reports on the effects of combined sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) foliar application in olive orchards on volatile compounds and sensory characteristics of virgin olive oil (VOO). In this work, the effects of increasing the fertilizer S and N concentration on volatile compound composition and odor and taste attributes of monovarietal VOOs of Istarska bjelica and Leccino cultivars were investigated. The volatile compounds were analyzed by gas chromatography with flame ionization and mass spectrometric detection after isolation by solid-phase microextraction, while sensory attributes were assessed by a professional panel. In all the investigated VOO samples, aldehydes were the most represented group of compounds, with (E)-2-hexenal as the most abundant, followed by (Z)-3-hexenal and 1-penten-3-one. Significant differences in the volatile profiles and sensory attributes were observed between VOOs from different treatments, mainly attributable to the interactions between all the factors that were investigated: treatment, cultivar, and year. Although significant interactions were noted for sensory attributes as well, the score for overall quality was generally lower for Leccino VOOs and for VOOs from both cultivars that were obtained after the highest SN dose treatment. All the samples were graded by overall sensory scores that were higher than eight and were characterized by well-pronounced fruitiness and the absence of sensory defects. The results of this study showed that foliar application of S and N significantly affects the quality of VOO, confirming that such a practice can modulate the characteristic olive oil odor and taste attributes and thus possibly influence its acceptability and preference among consumers.

Introduction: The main aim of this pilot study was to examine the effects of a single-dose intervention with a novel nitrate-producing formulation (MagNOVOx™) on biomarkers of cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular fitness in 12 healthy men. Methods: The study participants (age = 22.7 ± 2.8 years, height = 184.1 ± 5.7 cm, and weight = 82.5 ± 8.4 kg) were randomly allocated to receive either a single dose of MagNOVOx™ or a placebo (inulin) in a cross-over design. The primary outcome for this study was the change in running time to exhaustion evaluated at baseline (before supplementation) and post-intervention. Results: Time to exhaustion was improved after the intervention in 8 out of 11 participants (72.7%) who received MagNOVOx™, and in 1 out of 11 participants (9.1%) who received placebo ( p = 0.004), and MagNOVOx™ outcompeted placebo in terms of improving leg press performance ( p 0.05). Conclusion: These promising findings should be further corroborated in medium- and long-term trials, and different populations, while the exact mechanism of MagNOVOx™ requires additional physiological studies.

This study was designed to evaluate the nano–bio interactions between endogenous biothiols (cysteine and glutathione) with biomedically relevant, metallic nanoparticles (silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs)), in order to assess the biocompatibility and fate of nanoparticles in biological systems. A systematic and comprehensive analysis revealed that the preparation of AgNPs and AuNPs in the presence of biothiols leads to nanoparticles stabilized with oxidized forms of biothiols. Their safety was tested by evaluation of cell viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, apoptosis induction and DNA damage in murine fibroblast cells (L929), while ecotoxicity was tested using the aquatic model organism Daphnia magna. The toxicity of these nanoparticles was considerably lower compared to their ionic metal forms (i.e., Ag+ and Au3+). The comparison with data published on polymer-coated nanoparticles evidenced that surface modification with biothiols made them safer for the biological environment. In vitro evaluation on human cells demonstrated that the toxicity of AgNPs and AuNPs prepared in the presence of cysteine was similar to the polymer-based nanoparticles with the same core material, while the use of glutathione for nanoparticle stabilization was considerably less toxic. These results represent a significant contribution to understanding the role of biothiols on the fate and behavior of metal-based nanomaterials.

Abstract Background Both obesity and gestational diabetes (GDM) are associated with adverse outcomes. Diet during pregnancy impacts weight gain and fetal growth. Therefore, we aimed to explore non-pharmacological treatment success depending on pre-pregnancy body weight and its association with large for gestational age (LGA) infants in women with GDM. Methods In our observational study we investigated 57 singleton pregnant women with GDM. All women received standard treatment, including healthy diet education and regular medical checkups. Data were collected through blood analysis, medical records and questionnaires assessing diet before conception and during pregnancy. Differences in dietary patterns were compared in normal weight and overweight/obese group using Mann–Whitney U, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test or Kruskal–Wallis test, as appropriate. Logistic regression was used for prediction of LGA. p-value less than 0.05 was used for statistical significance. 39. Gender and national differences in emotional intelligence and empathy: Comparison of Croatian and Portuguese samples

The study focused on the relationship of emotional and cognitive components of empathy with emotional intelligence abilities (labelling, understanding, and regulating emotions). Since both emotional intelligence and empathy have important role in a person’s socio-emotional health and well-being, we need to better understand the relations between these two related constructs. Additionally, having samples from two different countries enabled us comparison on the national level. Two samples of adults participated in the study, namely from Croatia (N = 138) and Portugal (N = 138). We found significant moderate correlations between empathy and emotional intelligence measures in both samples. Four dimensions from the Interpersonal Responsivity Index (IRI; empathic concerns, fantasy, personal distress and perspective-taking) had significant moderate correlations with each other, with similar patterns of correlations in both samples. The strongest correlations were found for the TEQ (affective component of empathy) and perspective-taking (cognitive component of empathy) and different emotional intelligence components. Participants in the Portuguese sample had higher scores on the emotional component of empathy (empathic care and the TEQ), while cognitive component (perspective-taking) was more expressed in the Croatian sample. Participants in the Portuguese sample also had higher scores on all three components of emotional intelligence than participants in the Croatian sample. Regardless of the nationality, women had higher scores on the measures of empathic care, fantasy, perspective-taking and the TEQ, while men scored higher on the measure of personal distress. Regarding emotional intelligence scales, women had higher results on the Perceive and Understand emotions scale.

The article clarifies the importance of maintenance in the exploitation of a particular medical device from the aspect of maintaining its availability, reliability and overall functionality. Particularly emphasized is the role of the preventive method or procedures that have a preventive character before the problems arise in the work. Through an analysis of the most common malfunctions and causes that occur during the exploitation, a basis for objective defining and proposing principles has been created – preventive maintenance with special emphasis on preventive maintenance according to an established condition. The article also shows a numerical way of calculating the periodicity of conducting preventive examinations on a particular device.

41. The Effect of Feeding with Central European Local Mulberry Genotypes on the Development and Health Status of Silkworms and Quality Parameters of Raw Silk

Silkworm rearing activities ceased in the 1970′s in several European countries. Attempts on the re-establishment of ecological and sustainable sericulture in Slovenia and Hungary are ongoing. The aim of the study was to assess the usability of locally adapted mulberry genotypes for sericulture and to estimate connections between leaf compound and silkworm performance parameters. A controlled feeding experiment of silkworms was performed to test the influence of leaves from selected trees on the growth of larvae, the health and microbiological status of larvae (e.g., gut bacterial microbiome, Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus infection), weight of cocoons and raw silk parameters. The Slovenian and Hungarian mulberry genotypes had significantly higher total protein contents, and lower total phenolic contents and differed significantly in some individual phenolics compared to the reference sericultural and fruit varieties. Significant differences were found in the contents of the macro- and microelements, namely S, Mn, Fe, and Sr. Based on correlative statistics and multivariate analysis, a combined positive influence of proteins, specific phenolics, and microelements on larval growth and silk thread parameters was predicted. The results of the study indicate that selected local Slovenian and Hungarian mulberry varieties are suitable for high-quality silk cocoon and raw silk production.

Primary dissociated neuronal cultures have become a standard model for studying central nervous system (CNS) development. Such cultures are predominantly prepared from the hippocampus or cortex of rodents (mice and rats), while other mammals are less used. Here, we describe the establishment and extensive characterization of the primary dissociated neuronal cultures derived from the cortex of the gray South American short-tailed opossums, Monodelphis domestica. Opossums are unique in their ability to fully regenerate their CNS after an injury during their early postnatal development. Thus, we used cortex of postnatal day (P) 3–5 opossum to establish long-surviving and nearly pure neuronal cultures, as well as mixed cultures composed of radial glia cells (RGCs) in which their neurogenic and gliogenic potential was confirmed. Both types of cultures can survive for more than 1 month in vitro. We also prepared neuronal cultures from the P16–18 opossum cortex, which were composed of astrocytes and microglia, in addition to neurons. The long-surviving opossum primary dissociated neuronal cultures represent a novel mammalian in vitro platform particularly useful to study CNS development and regeneration.

This paper presents a novel system for generating and receiving quasi-continuous (QC) TeraHertz (THz) waves. A system design and theoretical foundation for QC-THz signal generation are presented. The proposed QC-THz system consists of commercially available photo-conductive antennas used for transmission and reception of THz waves and a custom-designed QC optical signal generator, which is based on a fast optical frequency sweep of a single telecom distributed-feedback laser diode and unbalanced optical fiber Michelson interferometer used for a high-frequency modulation. The theoretical model for the proposed system is presented and experimentally evaluated. The experimental results were compared to the state-of-the-art continuous-wave THz system. The comparison between the continuous-wave THz system and the proposed QC-THz system showed the ability to transmit and receive QC-THz waves up to 300 GHz. The upper-frequency limit is bounded by the length of the used Michelson interferometer. The presented design of THz signal generation has a potential for industrial application because it is cost-efficient and can be built using commercially available components.

Guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) is a direct endogenic precursor of creatine. GAA is also a re-discovered nutraceutical that has been put forward as an energy-facilitating compound by many animal and a few human studies. Recent trials indicated that dietary GAA might have yet another role in muscle growth promotion, acting as an anticatabolic and/or anabolic compound. This opinion paper summarizes the latest findings for advancing (or impeding) dietary GAA in skeletal muscle medicine, discussing open questions that need to be answered before the translation of supplemental GAA use from bench to bedside.

47. Early Responses of Brassica oleracea Roots to Zinc Supply Under Sufficient and Sub-Optimal Phosphorus Supply

Shoot zinc (Zn) concentration in Brassica oleracea is affected by soil Zn and phosphorus (P) supply. Most problematic is the negative impact of P fertilizers on Zn concentrations in crops, which makes balancing yield and mineral quality challenging. To evaluate early molecular mechanisms involved in the accumulation of large shoot Zn concentrations regardless of the P supply, two B. oleracea accessions differing in root architecture and root exudates were grown hydroponically for two weeks with different combinations of P and Zn supply. Ionome profiling and deep RNA sequencing of roots revealed interactions of P and Zn in planta, without apparent phenotypic effects. In addition, increasing P supply did not reduce tissue Zn concentration. Substantial changes in gene expression in response to different P and/or Zn supplies in roots of both accessions ensured nutritionally sufficient P and Zn uptake. Numerous genes were differentially expressed after changing Zn or P supply and most of them were unique to only one accession, highlighting their different strategies in achieving nutrient sufficiency. Thus, different gene networks responded to the changing P and Zn supply in the two accessions. Additionally, enrichment analysis of gene ontology classes revealed that genes involved in lipid metabolism, response to starvation, and anion transport mechanisms were most responsive to differences in P and Zn supply in both accessions. The results agreed with previously studies demonstrating alterations in P and Zn transport and phospholipid metabolism in response to reduced P and Zn supply. It is anticipated that improved knowledge of genes responsive to P or Zn supply will help illuminate the roles in uptake and accumulation of P and Zn and might identify candidate genes for breeding high-yield-high-Zn brassicas.

Salinity is a growing global concern that affects the yield of crop species, including tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). Its wild relative Solanum chilense was reported to have halophyte properties. We compared salt resistance of both species during the reproductive phase, with a special focus on sodium localization in the flowers. Plants were exposed to NaCl from the seedling stage. Salinity decreased the number of inflorescences in both species but the number of flowers per inflorescence and sepal length only in S. lycopersicum. External salt supply decreased the stamen length in S. chilense, and it was associated with a decrease in pollen production and an increase in pollen viability. Although the fruit set was not affected by salinity, fruit weight and size decreased in S. lycopersicum. Concentrations and localization of Na, K, Mg, and Ca differed in reproductive structures of both species. Inflorescences and fruits of S. chilense accumulated more Na than S. lycopersicum. Sodium was mainly located in male floral organs of S. chilense but in non-reproductive floral organs in S. lycopersicum. The expression of Na transporter genes differed in flowers of both species. Overall, our results indicated that S. chilense was more salt-resistant than S. lycopersicum during the reproductive phase and that differences could be partly related to dissimilarities in element distribution and transport in flowers.

This study investigates the effect of combined sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) foliar fertilization on leaf S and N concentration, as well as on the growth of olive fruit and on the quantity and quality of olive oil, obtained from two olive cultivars ‘Istarska bjelica’ and ‘Leccino’ in two consecutive years. S and N are some of the most important nutrients, and both play a crucial role in plant oil production. The here-reported fertilization program significantly increased S concentration in leaves without affecting N concentration, which led to an increase in fruit yield and improvement of all fruit morphological parameters. The best oil yield per tree was obtained under the treatment with the highest S/N dose. Oil quality was not affected by S and N supply, and this allowed us to classify all our oil samples as extra virgin (EVOO). Regarding the content of total phenols (TPC) and composition of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), they remained unaltered under the applied treatments. All investigated fruit morphological parameters, as well as fruit and oil yield, were highly cultivar-dependent. ‘Istarska bjelica’ was characterized as a cultivar with higher fruit mass and pulp percentage, while its stone parameters were lower than those of ‘Leccino’. Consequently, the extraction oil yield obtained from ‘Istarska bjelica’ fruits was much higher. Moreover, environmental conditions had a great impact on fruit and oil quantity. The here-obtained results led us to the conclusion that supply of S and N can enhance oil production without affecting its nutritional quality, a finding that could generate large long-term effects on economic growth in the olive oil sector.
