Pyridachlometyl is a novel tubulin dynamics modulator fungicide developed by Sumitomo as a new agent designed to tackle fungicide resistance. Pyridachlometyl is being developed as a first-in-class molecule with an anti-tubulin mode of action, the chemical structure of which is characterized by a unique tetrasubstituted pyridazine ring. The first commercial product 'Fuseki flowable' received initial registration in 2023 in Japan. The concepts of the discovery project, optimization of chemical structures, and biological profiles are reviewed herein. © 2024 The Author(s). Background: Resistance to succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicides has been reported in some rust fungi within Pucciniales. However, measuring the resistance factors conferred by a specific substitution at the target site is difficult for most species because of the difficulty in performing in vitro experiments and the complexity of the binuclear state in these obligate parasites. We focused on Puccinia horiana because it easily forms homozygous basidiospores that are sensitive to SDHIs during in vitro germination, whereas the uredospores of other rust fungi are less sensitive., Results: We identified two substitutions, SdhC-I88F and SdhD-C125Y, that drive SDHI resistance in Pu. horiana. Using basidiospore germination inhibition tests, we measured the resistance factors for six SDHI fungicides in Pu. horiana isolates harboring SdhC-I88F substitutions, wherein orthologous substitutions were most frequently observed in SDHI-resistant Pucciniales, such as soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi). The resistance factors were high for penthiopyrad and benzovindiflupyr (>150), moderate for oxycarboxin and inpyrfluxam (10-30), and low for mepronil and fluxapyroxad (3-10). The most potent SDHI against SdhC-I88F-harboring isolates was inpyrfluxam, with a half-maximal effective concentration (EC 50 ) of 0.0082 mg L -1 owing to its high intrinsic activity. SdhD-C125Y played a minor, but significant role in increasing the resistance factors (one- to tenfold increases), depending on the individual SDHIs., Conclusion: This study is the first to use basidiospore germination inhibitory tests to quantify the resistance factors for SDHI-resistant Pucciniales. This lens was prescribed for a 59-year-old male on the eye with irregular corneal astigmatism after receiving penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) for refractive correction, whose eye was difficult to wear hard CLs (HCLs). After following the directions in the fitting manual provided by the manufacturer, fitting was good in the right eye and corrected visual acuity was 20/25 in Snellen Chart. An outbreak of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses exhibiting cross-resistance to oseltamivir and peramivir occurred in Yokohama, Japan, in September 2024. Among 24 students in a class, 11 were diagnosed with influenza or influenza-like illness, and viruses harbouring the NA H275Y and HA Q210H substitutions were isolated from four. Deep sequencing analysis confirmed the clonal spread of these mutants. Antigenic analysis revealed differences from the vaccine strain. Continued monitoring is crucial to assess the potential for further spread of these mutant viruses.

Background: This study aimed to review the activities of the Kobe City Initial-phase Intensive Support Team for Dementia pre- and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, to compare the characteristics of the target population and the performance of the team's activities, and determine the impact of the pandemic on the team's project., Methods: The summary data obtained at the time of consultation, team activities, and participants' characteristics were extracted from 662 participants who started to receive support between April 2018 and March 2022. Statistical analysis was performed by dividing the participants into the following two groups: pre- and during COVID-19 pandemic groups., Results: There was no significant difference in the number of new cases or cases that led to a dementia diagnosis between the pre- and during COVID-19 pandemic groups. However, there were significant differences in the number of home visits and rate of introduction of medical care between the two groups. In our study population, the number of participants with financial management difficulties and delusions increased and the number of participants who refused visitations slightly decreased., Conclusion: The Kobe City Initial-phase Intensive Support Team was able to continue its activities during the pandemic partly because the team is an independent, dedicated team. During the pandemic, there was an increase in the number of participants who were isolated because they were deprived of opportunities to interact with others, and who developed delusions and other psychiatric symptoms. Background/objectives: Opting to perform emotion regulation when facing high-arousal stimuli enhances the reduction in negative emotions. Previous research has indicated that self-choice, that is, personally choosing from multiple alternatives, can improve performance. However, it is unclear whether the emotion regulation strategy chosen among multiple alternatives in daily life enhances stress reduction compared to a forced strategy. This study aimed to reveal the effects of self-choice emotion regulation and its underlying neural basis., Methods: Participants were 40 healthy adults who met the inclusion criteria; they performed self-choice emotion regulation, forced emotion regulation, and no emotion regulation (the control condition) while their brain activity was captured using a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanner. First, the participants were shown a stressful scenario. Secondly, they rated the stress they experienced. Thirdly, they performed self-choice or forced emotion regulation or did nothing. Finally, participants rated their stress level again., Results: Self-choice emotion regulation reduced stress better than forced-choice emotion regulation. The stress reduction was associated with decreases in the activation of the left opercular part of the inferior frontal gyrus., Conclusions: Self-choice can improve emotion regulation, and this effect is likely mediated by the neural efficiency of the left inferior frontal gyrus.

Severe coronary artery disease is often treated with a coronary artery bypass graft using an autologous blood vessel. When this is not available, a commercially available synthetic graft can be used as an alternative but is associated with high failure rates and complications. Therefore, the research focus has shifted toward the development of biodegradable, regenerative vascular grafts that can convert into neoarteries. We previously developed an electrospun tropoelastin (TE)-polyglycerol sebacate (PGS) vascular graft that rapidly regenerated into a neoartery, with a cellular composition and extracellular matrix approximating the native aorta. We noted, however, that the TE-PGS graft underwent dilation until sufficient neotissue had been regenerated. This study investigated the mechanisms behind the observed dilation following TE-PGS vascular graft implantation in mice. We saw more pronounced dilation at the graft middle compared with the graft proximal and graft distal regions at 8 weeks postimplantation. Histological analysis revealed less degradation at the graft middle, although the remaining graft material appeared pitted, suggesting compromised structural and mechanical integrity. We also observed delayed cellular infiltration and extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition at the graft middle, corresponding with the area's reduced ability to resist dilation. In contrast, the graft proximal region exhibited greater degradation and significantly enhanced cellular infiltration and ECM regeneration. The nonuniform dilation was attributed to the combined effect of the regional differences in graft degradation and arterial regeneration. Consideration of these findings is crucial for graft optimization prior to its use in clinical applications.

We estimated the error range of the simulated salinity and seawater temperature based on the uncertainty of the river discharge into Ise Bay in a nowcasting numerical simulation model. We used two methods for calculating the river discharge forcing. In the first method, precipitation was used as the input for the storage function method. In the second method, the Basin Rainfall Index was used, which is a nowcasting dataset of river discharge simulated by the Japan Meteorological Agency. The uncertainty in annual river discharge in both methods was estimated to be within ±30 %. Simulations were conducted using the hydrodynamic simulation model. Annual simulation error ranges associated with the uncertainty in river discharge for salinity and seawater temperature were estimated to be approximately ±1.2 and ±0.15 °C, respectively. To clarify the epidemiology of enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), an enterovirus rarely identified in the 20th century, we performed seroepidemiological analysis against EV-D68 using sera collected in 1976, 1985, 1990, 1999, 2009, and 2019, as well as Yamagata isolate (EVD68/Yamagata.JPN/2023-89), in Yamagata, Japan. The neutralizing antibody (Ab)-positive rates for those under 20 years old were 61.0%, 82.5%, 84.3%, 46.7%, 50.5%, and 67.9%, in each year, whereas the rates for those above 20 years old were between 93.4% and 99.1%. Generally, geometric mean titers (GMTs）increased with age among children and the total GMT in each year was 25.4, 49.2, 37.2, 30.8, 29.5, and 33.9, from 1976 to 2019, respectively. The findings in this Yamagata-based study showed that the seroprevalence of EV-D68 over the last four decades has increased with age among children, as a susceptible group, and then reaches a plateau of over approximately 80% among adults. Background: Treatment strategies for a symptomatic accessory navicular include both operative and nonoperative approaches. The primary aim of this study is to define health utility values for 7 health states experienced by those with a symptomatic accessory navicular who undergo operative and/or nonoperative treatment. Secondarily, the study incorporates the health utility values with treatment costs, probabilities of various outcomes, and duration of health states into a cost-effectiveness model comparing the nonoperative treatment protocol at our institution vs surgical excision., Methods: Institutional review board approval was obtained to call parents of patients 10-20 years old at the time of interview who were evaluated for a symptomatic accessory navicular from February 1, 2016, to March 2, 2023, at a single institution by one of 4 pediatric orthopaedic surgeons. Participants were asked to rate 7 health states from 0 to 100, with 0 representing death (if 18 years or older) or the worst health imaginable (if under 18 years) and 100 representing perfect health. Using published values for the probabilities of various treatment outcomes, time spent in various health states, and Medicare costs from the perspective of the payor and society, a decision analysis was constructed., Results: Health utility values for 7 health states were obtained. Operative treatment was preferred to nonoperative treatment in the base case model. Surgery was more expensive ($16 825) than nonoperative treatment ($7486). Using a willingness-to-pay threshold of <$50 000 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY), surgery was cost-effective compared to nonoperative treatment with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of $20 303/QALY. The transplantation of human mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (hMSCs) has potential as a curative and permanent therapy for congenital skeletal diseases. However, the self-renewal and differentiation capacities of hMSCs markedly vary. Therefore, cell proliferation and trilineage differentiation capacities were tested in vitro to characterize hMSCs before their clinical use. However, it remains unclear whether the ability of hMSCs in vitro accurately predicts that in living animals. The xenograft model is an alternative method for validating clinical MSCs. Nevertheless, the protocol still needs refinement, and it has yet to be established whether hMSCs, which are expanded in culture for clinical use, retain the ability to engraft and differentiate into adipogenic, osteogenic, and chondrogenic lineage cells in transplantation settings. In the present study, to establish a robust xenograft model of MSCs, we examined the delivery routes of hMSCs and the immunological state of recipients. The intra-arterial injection of hMSCs into X-ray-irradiated (IR) NOG, a severely immunodeficient mouse, achieved the highest engraftment but failed to sustain long-term engraftment. We demonstrated that graft cells localized to a collagenase-released fraction (CR), in which endogenous colony-forming cells reside. We also showed that Pdgfrα + Sca1 + MSCs (PαS), which reside in the CR fraction, resisted IR. These results show that our protocol enables hMSCs to fulfill a high level of engraftment in mouse bone marrow in the short term. To achieve cell-type-specific gene expression, using target cell-type-tropic different adeno-associated virus (AAV) capsids is advantageous. However, their tropism across brain cell types in nonhuman primates has not been fully elucidated. We assessed the tropism of nine AAV serotype capsids (AAV1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, rh10, and DJ) expressing EGFP by chicken β-actin hybrid (CBh) promoter in marmoset cerebral cortical cells. All nine AAV capsid vectors, especially AAV9 and AAVrh10, caused highly neuron-selective EGFP expression. Some AAV capsids, including AAV5, induced EGFP expression to a lesser extent in oligodendrocytes. Different ubiquitous cytomegalovirus (CMV) and CMV early enhancer/chicken β-actin (CAG) promoters exhibited similar neuron-predominant transgene expression. Conversely, all nine AAV capsid vectors with the astrocyte-specific hGFA(ABC1D) promoter selectively expressed EGFP in astrocytes, except AAV5, which modestly expressed EGFP in oligodendrocytes. Oligodendrocyte-specific mouse myelin basic protein (mMBP) promoter in AAV5 vectors expressed EGFP in oligodendrocytes specifically and efficiently. The following are optimal combinations of capsids and promoters for cell-type-specific expression: AAV9 or AAVrh10 and ubiquitous CBh or CMV promoter for neuron-specific transgene expression, AAV2 or AAV7 and hGFA(ABC1D) promoters for astrocyte-specific transgene expression, and AAV5 and mMBP promoters for oligodendrocyte-specific transgene expression., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interests., (© 2024 The Author(s).)

Background : Sudden volcanic eruptions can lead to volcanic ash entering the eyes, causing severe discomfort and complicating evacuation efforts. The specific effects of volcanic ash on ocular tissues, especially when wearing soft contact lenses (SCLs), are not well documented, prompting this experimental investigation. Methods : White rabbits with normal eyes were randomly divided into three groups: (1) a bare eye group: bare eye + volcanic ash exposure + eye washing, (2) an SCL group: SCL-wearing eye + volcanic ash exposure + eye washing, and (3) a control group: eye washing only. In groups 1 and 2, volcanic ash was applied to one eye under topical anesthesia, followed by immediate saline rinsing. Slit-lamp microscopy and histopathological analysis were conducted after euthanasia. Results : Slit-lamp and histopathological examinations revealed more significant corneal and conjunctival erosion in the bare eye group compared to the SCL group, which showed limited damage. The control group displayed no ocular damage. Conclusions : Guidelines from the "Volcanic Ash Health Effects: A Guide for the Public" by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience recommend removing SCLs during ashfall. Our findings suggest that the damage to the corneal and conjunctival epithelium is less severe in SCL-wearing eyes than in bare eyes, recommending that SCL wearers prioritize evacuation over lens removal during sudden ashfall.

Analog and digital quantum simulators can efficiently simulate quantum many-body systems that appear in natural phenomena. However, experimental limitations of near-term devices still make it challenging to perform the entire process of quantum simulation. The purification-based quantum simulation methods can alleviate the limitations in experiments such as the cooling temperature and noise from the environment, while this method has the drawback that it requires global entangled measurement with a prohibitively large number of measurements that scales exponentially with the system size. In this Letter, we propose that we can overcome these problems by restricting the entangled measurements to the vicinity of the local observables to be measured, when the locality of the system can be exploited. We provide theoretical guarantees that the global purification operation can be replaced with local operations under some conditions, in particular for the task of cooling and error mitigation. We furthermore give a numerical verification that the localized purification is valid even when conditions are not satisfied. Our method bridges the fundamental concept of locality with quantum simulators, and therefore is expected to open a path to unexplored quantum many-body phenomena.

Background: The literature on the running kinematics of youth distance runners is limited., Purpose: We sought to describe 2-dimensional (2D) video analysis of running kinematics in healthy adolescent distance runners, which has not been previously described., Methods: We conducted an observational study of healthy, competitive runners between the ages of 14 and 18 years, prospectively recruited through local running clubs and our hospital's outreach between August 2019 and July 2023. Participants ran on a treadmill at a self-selected speed with markers attached to the thorax, pelvis, and lower extremities. A high-definition video camera recorded the runners in the sagittal and frontal planes. Kinematic measurements were completed using Dartfish software and reported as means and standard deviations., Results: Of the 53 participants (51% boys, mean age: 16.0 ± 1.4 years) included in the 2D running analysis, 91% ran with a rearfoot strike pattern, with a mean foot inclination angle of 10.2° ± 6.2°. Knee flexion angle at initial contact was 13.2° ± 3.8°, tibia inclination angle was 8.5° ± 3.2°, and peak knee flexion was 44.5° ± 3.6°. Cadence was 168.7° ± 8.6°. Contralateral pelvic drop was 6.0° ± 2.2° and peak rearfoot eversion was 11.8° ± 3.6°., Conclusions: This study is the first to describe running kinematics as captured by 2D video in healthy adolescent runners and to identify kinematic variables that may differ from those of adult runners. Pediatric patellar instability can impair function and restrict activity participation. If left untreated, it can lead to a degenerative knee. The incidence of patellar dislocations is highest in adolescents between 10 and 17 years of age; more than half of all first-time patellar dislocations occur during sports. This article reviews the evidence of risk factors for traumatic patellar instability, surgical interventions, and return-to-sport (RTS) considerations for pediatric and adolescent athletes. We identified a child coinfected with influenza B viruses of B/Yamagata and B/Victoria lineages, in whom we analyzed the occurrence of genetic reassortment. Plaque purification was performed using a throat swab specimen from a 9-year-old child, resulting in 34 well-isolated plaques. The genomic composition of eight gene segments (HA, NA, PB1, PB2, PA, NP, M, and NS genes) for each plaque was determined at the lineage level. Of the 34 plaques, 21 (61.8%) had B/Phuket/3073/2013 (B/Yamagata)-like sequences in all gene segments, while the other 13 (38.2%) were reassortants with B/Texas/02/2013 (B/Victoria)-like sequences in 1-5 of the 8 segments. The PB1 segment had the most B/Victoria lineage genes (23.5%; 8 of 34 plaques), while PB2 and PA had the least (2.9%; 1 of 34 plaques). Reassortants with B/Victoria lineage genes in 2-5 segments showed the same level of growth as viruses with B/Yamagata lineage genes in all segments. However, reassortants with B/Victoria lineage genes only in the NA, PB1, NP, or NS segments exhibited reduced or undetectable growth. We demonstrated that various gene reassortments occurred in a child. These results suggest that simultaneous outbreaks of two influenza B virus lineages increase genetic diversity and could promote the emergence of new epidemic strains.

Background: Influenza viruses can cause zoonotic infections that pose public health risks. Surveillance of influenza A and B viruses is conducted globally; however, information on influenza C and D viruses is limited. Longitudinal monitoring of influenza C virus in humans has been conducted in several countries, but there has been no long-term monitoring of influenza D virus in humans. The public health risks associated with the influenza D virus therefore remain unknown., Methods: We established a duplex real-time RT-PCR to detect influenza C and D viruses and analyzed respiratory specimens collected from 2144 patients in Japan with respiratory diseases between January 2018 and March 2023. We isolated viruses and conducted hemagglutination inhibition tests to examine antigenicity and focus reduction assays to determine susceptibility to the cap-dependent endonuclease inhibitor baloxavir marboxil., Results: We detected three influenza C viruses belonging to the C/Kanagawa- or C/Sao Paulo-lineages, which recently circulated globally. None of the specimens was positive for the influenza D virus. The C/Yokohama/1/2022 strain, isolated from the specimen with the highest viral RNA load and belonging to the C/Kanagawa-lineage, showed similar antigenicity to the reference C/Kanagawa-lineage strain and was susceptible to baloxavir., Conclusions: Our duplex real-time RT-PCR is useful for the simultaneous detection of influenza C and D viruses from the same specimen. Woolly hair (WH) is a hair shaft anomaly characterized by tightly curled hair that typically stops growing at a few inches. Autosomal recessive WH (ARWH; OMIM no. 278150/604379/616760) has been reported to be caused by variants in genes coding lysophosphatidic acid receptor 6 ( LPAR6 ), lipase H ( LIPH ), or keratin 25 ( KRT25 ). In this study, we conducted a scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examination of the hair of a 3-year-old Japanese ARWH patient. The SEM revealed that her affected hair had an irregular and rough cuticle compared to her mother's hair. Many irregular small projections and longitudinal grooves were seen on the surface of the patient's hair shaft, and some free margins of the hair cortex were raised or serrated. Her hairs were oval-shaped on the cross-section. Mutation analysis revealed a homozygous pathogenic variant (c.736 T > A; Cys246Ser) in exon 6 in LIPH . In our clinic, we identified three additional cases with the homozygous Cys246Ser variant and one case with compound heterozygous variants in LIPH : Cys246Ser and c.671C > G (Pro224Arg). Antiviral susceptibility of influenza viruses was assessed using a high-content imaging-based neutralization test. Cap-dependent endonuclease inhibitors, baloxavir and AV5116, were superior to AV5115 against type A viruses, and AV5116 was most effective against PA mutants tested. However, these three inhibitors displayed comparable activity (EC 50 8-22 nM) against type C viruses from six lineages. The dataset including the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), and keratometry recordings preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively was collected by chart review. The means of the vector magnitude, vector meridian, and arithmetic magnitude of the preoperative and postoperative astigmatism and SIA were calculated. The correlations among the SIA magnitude, postoperative BCVA, and IOP were assessed.Results: The mean astigmatic arithmetic magnitudes did not differ significantly (P=0.0732) preoperatively among the four groups, but the magnitude was significantly (P=0.0002) greater in the LEC group than the other groups postoperatively. The mean SIA vectors were calculated to be 1.01 D at 56°, 0.62 D at 74°, 0.23 D at 112°, and 0.12 D at 97° for the LEC, EXP, exLOT, and µLOT groups, respectively. We analyzed the visual outcome in patients with open globe eye injury at our hospital over a 4-year period.Patients and methods: This study reviewed 40 eyes of 40 patients with open globe eye injury who were presented to Juntendo University Shizuoka Hospital and required emergency surgery during the 4 years from January 2010 to December 2014. Retrospective evaluation of the visual outcome was performed using data from the medical records, including assessment of the influence of sex, side of the eye injury, cause of injury, and site/severity of injury.Results: The mean age (SD) at the time of the injury was 58.9 years (±25.1 years). There were 28 males (70.0%) and 12 females (30.0%). Statistically significant improvement in visual acuity after treatment was noted in the males (P=0.0015, Wilcoxon test), but not in the females. Twenty-five patients had injury to the right eye (62.5%) and 15 had injury to the left eye (37.5%). A significant improvement in visual acuity was achieved after treatment of injury to the right eye (P=0.021), but not the left eye (P=0.109). The most frequent cause of injury was an accident (15 eyes; 37.5%). The second most frequent cause was work-related injury (14 eyes; 35.0%), which only occurred in males, and the third cause was accident due to negligence (eleven eyes; 27.5%). Two patients developed sympathetic ophthalmia and one patient developed postoperative endophthalmitis. Conclusion: The majority of patients with open globe eye injury were male workers in Japan. The visual outcome of work-related injury was better than that of injury due to other causes. The visual outcome was also better if the right eye was injured compared with the left eye. Patients with injuries due to negligence were older than the other groups, and this finding might be characteristic of an aging society. Yusuke Hayashi, Hiroshi Toshida, Yusuke Matsuzaki, Asaki Matsui, Toshihiko Ohta Department of Ophthalmology, Juntendo University Shizuoka Hospital, Izunokuni, Shizuoka, Japan Objective: Rebamipide ophthalmic suspension was developed for the treatment of dry eyes and for other corneal diseases, promoting the secretion of both mucin in tear fluid and membrane-associated mucin, increasing the number of goblet cells, and restoring the barrier function of the corneal epithelium. We report a case of a persistent corneal epithelial defect in a patient with diabetes treated with topical application of rebamipide ophthalmic suspension. Case presentation: A 73-year-old woman had a history of type 2 diabetes for 35 years and nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy for 23 years. She presented to our department with discharge and ophthalmalgia in the left eye. A corneal ulcer was detected, and culture of corneal scrapings was performed, with Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus canis being isolated. The infection was treated with levofloxacin eye drops and ofloxacin ophthalmic ointment based on the sensitivity profile of the isolate. However, a corneal epithelial defect persisted for approximately 2 months despite continuing treatment with 0.1% hyaluronic acid ophthalmic suspension and 0.3% ofloxacin eye ointment. Her hemoglobin A1c was 7.3%. The persistent corneal epithelial defect showed improvement at 2 weeks after treatment with rebamipide unit dose 2% ophthalmic suspension, and it did not recur even when vitrectomy was subsequently performed for vitreous hemorrhage due to progression of diabetic retinopathy. Conclusion: This is the first report about efficacy of rebamipide unit dose 2% ophthalmic suspension for presenting persistent corneal epithelial defect in a patient with diabetes. In the present case, the suggested mechanisms are the following: improving the corneal barrier function, stabilization of mucin on the keratoconjunctival epithelium, and improving the wettability and stability of the tear film, which resulted in the promotion of healing of the corneal epithelial defect in a short time period. Background : The primary purpose of this study was to preliminarily examine the effects of autonomic nervous system activity on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Recent studies have examined approaches to modulating autonomic activity using invasive and non-invasive methods, but the effects of changes in autonomic activity during cognitive tasks on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex have not been fully investigated. The purpose of this preliminary investigation was to examine changes in autonomic activity and blood oxygen saturation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during reading tasks induced by vagus nerve stimulation using a microcone patch. Methods : A cohort of 40 typically developing adults was enrolled in this study. We carefully examined changes in autonomic nervous system activity and blood oxygen saturation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex during a reading task in two conditions: with and without microcone patch stimulation. Results : Significant changes in brain activation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortext due to microcone patch stimulation were confirmed. In addition, hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed specific changes in reading task-related blood oxygen saturation in the dorsolateral prefrontal region during microcone patch stimulation. Conclusions : It should be recognized that this study is a preliminary investigation and does not have immediate clinical applications. However, our results suggest that changes in autonomic nervous system activity induced by external vagal stimulation may affect activity in specific reading-related regions of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Further research and evaluation are needed to fully understand the implications and potential applications of these findings.

We propose an experimental method for evaluating the adiabatic condition during quantum annealing (QA), which will be essential for solving practical problems. The adiabatic condition consists of the transition matrix element and the energy gap, and our method simultaneously provides information about these components without diagonalizing the Hamiltonian. The key idea is to measure the power spectrum of a time domain signal by adding an oscillating field during QA, and we can estimate the values of the transition matrix element and energy gap from the measurement output. Humanness perception, which attributes fundamental and unique human characteristics to other objects or people, has significant consequences for people's interactions. Notably, the failure to perceive humanness in older adults can lead to prejudice. This study investigates the effect of a target's age on humanness perception in terms of two dimensions: agency (the ability to act and do) and experience (the ability to feel and sense). We also examined brain activity using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner in order to understand the underlying neural mechanisms. Healthy university students viewed the facial images of older and younger individuals and judged the humanness of each individual in terms of agency and experience while inside the MRI scanner. The results indicated that older adults were rated higher on experience, and no difference was found in ratings for agency between younger and older face images. Analysis of brain imaging data indicated that positive functional connectivity between the ventral and dorsal regions of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) was greater when judging the humanness of younger faces than older faces. We also found that the negative functional connectivity between the left inferior frontal gyrus and postcentral gyrus was greater when judging the humanness of older faces as compared to that of younger faces. Flexible imagers are currently under intensive development as versatile optical sensor arrays, designed to capture images of surfaces and internals, irrespective of their shape. A significant challenge in developing flexible imagers is extending their detection capabilities to encompass a broad spectrum of infrared light, particularly terahertz (THz) light at room temperature. This advancement is crucial for thermal and biochemical applications. In this study, a flexible infrared imager is designed using uncooled carbon nanotube (CNT) sensors and organic circuits. The CNT sensors, fabricated on ultrathin 2.4 µm substrates, demonstrate enhanced sensitivity across a wide infrared range, spanning from near-infrared to THz wavelengths. Moreover, they retain their characteristics under bending and crumpling. The design incorporates light-shielded organic transistors and circuits, functioning reliably under light irradiation, and amplifies THz detection signals by a factor of 10. The integration of both CNT sensors and shielded organic transistors into an 8 × 8 active-sensor matrix within the imager enables sequential infrared imaging and nondestructive assessment for heat sources and in-liquid chemicals through wireless communication systems. Glucose transporter isoform 1 (GLUT1), which is upregulated in a variety of malignant tumors, facilitates cellular glucose uptake to boost rapid tumor growth and progression. In several types of cancer, inhibition of GLUT1 suppresses tumor proliferation and metastasis, indicating that GLUT1 is a potential target of anticancer therapy. The present study performed immunohistochemistry to analyze GLUT1 expression levels in 51 patients with extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD), including 23 with only intraepidermal lesions and 28 with dermal-invasive lesions. Of the 28 patients with dermal invasion, nine had available samples of lymph node metastasis. GLUT1 staining scores were significantly higher in dermal-invasive (P<0.0001) and metastatic lesions (P=0.0008) compared with in intraepidermal lesions. GLUT1 is upregulated during the transition from preinvasive to invasive or metastatic tumor in EMPD. Moreover, GLUT1 staining scores were statistically higher in intraepidermal tumor cells of dermal-invasive EMPD compared with tumor cells of only in situ EMPD (P=0.0338). GLUT1 is upregulated even during the preinvasive phase in patients with invasive EMPD, suggesting that GLUT1 immunostaining can predict the risk of dermal invasion.
