Abstract

Despite the success of deep learning in computer vision, algorithms to recognize subtle and small objects (or regions) is still challenging. For example, recognizing a baseball or a frisbee on a ground scene or a bone fracture in an X-ray image can easily result in overfitting, unless a huge amount of training data is available. To mitigate this problem, we need a way to force a model should identify subtle regions in limited training data. In this paper, we propose a simple but efficient supervised augmentation method called Cut\&Remain. It achieved better performance on various medical image domain (internally sourced- and public dataset) and a natural image domain (MS-COCO$_s$) than other supervised augmentation and the explicit guidance methods. In addition, using the class activation map, we identified that the Cut\&Remain methods drive a model to focus on relevant subtle and small regions efficiently. We also show that the performance monotonically increased along the Cut\&Remain ratio, indicating that a model can be improved even though only limited amount of Cut\&Remain is applied for, so that it allows low supervising (annotation) cost for improvement., Comment: Under review

10. Complications and outcomes of operative treatment for acute perilunate injuries: a systematic review.

Abstract

We systematically reviewed the incidence of complications and outcomes of different surgical methods for acute perilunate injury in the MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane Library databases. Forty-three articles with 880 patients were included. The most common complications were arthritis (30%), carpal instability (15%), avascular necrosis of the lunate (12%), complex regional pain syndrome (11%), and nonunion or avascular necrosis of the scaphoid (9%). In the meta-analysis, the mean scapholunate gap was 1.7 mm in the closed surgery group and 2.3 mm in the open surgery group, which was a statistically significant difference. The mean flexion–extension arc of the wrist and modified Mayo wrist score were better in the closed surgery group than in the open surgery group. However, these findings may relate to different cohorts in terms of injury severity. Therefore, the causal relationship between closed surgery and better outcomes may be uncertain as less severe subluxations are more likely to be treated closed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) has been used widely in treatment of glenohumeral osteoarthritis and provides excellent pain relief and functional results. Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) was created to treat the complex problem of rotator cuff tear arthropathy. RSA also has been performed for glenohumeral osteoarthritis even in cases where the rotator cuff is preserved and has shown good results comparable with TSA. The indications for RSA are expanding to include tumors of the proximal humerus, revision of hemiarthroplasty to RSA, and revision of failed TSA to RSA. The purposes of this article were to describe comprehensively the conditions under which RSA should be considered in glenohumeral osteoarthritis, to explain its theoretical background, and to review the literature.

Abstract

Portulaca oleracea L. is a traditional oriental medicine known for its pharmacological effects. The present study aimed to investigate the immunostimulatory effects of PPCE on cyclophosphamide-stimulated rat model and in isolated spleen cells. The result showed that PPCE exerted an immunostimulatory effect in vivo and in vitro. Specifically, PPCE significantly enhanced splenocyte proliferation and upregulated inflammatory cytokines (IL-2, IL-12, TNF-α, and IFN-γ) and NK cell activity in vitro. The immunostimulatory effect was further investigated through various immunological assays. Oral administration of PPCE increased the swimming time and number of immune cells in rats. Histological analysis revealed that PPCE administration exerted splenic recovery. Thus, P. oleracea L. based complex extracts may be used as an immunostimulatory agent in medicine or functional foods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As malfunction/absence of immune cells causes a variety of immunosuppressive disorders and chemical synthetic drugs for curing these diseases have many adverse effects, vigorous studies are being conducted. The Acanthopanax family has been used as traditional medicines for gastric ulcer, diabetes, etc. and culinary materials in East-South Asia. In this study, the immunostimulating properties of A. sessiliflorus were evaluated. A. sessiliflorus increased not only the splenocyte number but also immune-related cytokines such as TNF-α. However, it could not upregulate the expressions of IFN-γ and IL-2. A. sessiliflorus increased the swimming time, and comparison of organ weights relative to body weights for immune-related organs such as the spleen and thymus after a forced swim test showed that it could recover the spleen and thymus weights. It also increased the expression of TNF-α and slightly increased the concentration of IFN-γ but not IL-2. From the results, we concluded that as A. sessiliflorus has not only a host defense effect but also a stress-ameliorating property, further study it will be a promising material of immunostimulating material.
