Magnaporthiopsis maydis is a maize pathogen that causes severe damage to commercial corn fields in the late growth stages. Late wilt disease (LWD) has spread since its discovery in the 1960s in Egypt and is now reported in about 10 countries. The pathogen has a hidden endophytic lifecycle in resistant corn plants and secondary hosts such as green foxtail, watermelon lupin and cotton. At the same time, it could be an opportunist and hinder the host development under the right conditions. This study uncovered M. maydis interactions with newly identified maize endophytes. To this end, six fungi were isolated from the seeds of three sweet corn cultivars having varying susceptibility to LWD. These isolates were identified using colony morphology and microscopic characterization, universal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) molecular targeting and phylogenetic analysis. Most of them belonged to pathogenic species. Compared to three previously identified bioprotective microorganisms, the new species were tested for their ability to secrete metabolites that repress M. maydis in vitro and to antagonize it in a solid media confront test and a seedlings pathogenicity assay. The opportunistic fungal species Aspergillus flavus (ME1), Aspergillus terreus (PE3) and the reference biocontrol bacteria Bacillus subtilis (R2) achieved the highest M. maydis inhibition degree in the plates tests (74-100% inhibition). The seedlings' pathogenicity assay that predicts the seeds' microflora resistance to M. maydis highlighted the bio-shielding potential of most species (23% or more epicotyl elongation over the infected control). Fusarium sp. (ME2) was the leading species in this measure (43% enhancement), and B. subtilis gave the best protection in terms of seeds' germination (50%) and sprouts' biomass (34%). The results of this study could enhance our understanding of the pathobiome's role in the context of LWD and represent a first step in using the seeds' natural protective microflora to develop novel management strategies. Fusarium basal rot (FBR) places a significant limitation on Allium production worldwide. The damage caused by the disease can be observed throughout the entire crop cycle. This research aimed to further our understanding of the impact of FBR on the cultivation of onions (Allium cepa) in northeast Israel. It focused on studying the composition and incidence of Fusarium species involved in disease outbursts in two representative fields, one in Galilee (Hula Valley) and the second in the Golan Heights, where the disease incidences reached 8%. Using colony morphology, microscopic taxonomic keys, and molecular methods, a new, unreported Neocosmospora (previously Fusarium solani) species complex (SC, mostly N. falciformis) was discovered as a wildly spread member of the Fusarium pathobiome community. This species complex appeared more generalist in its nature since it was found in all three onion cultivars' samples. It was also less virulent in seed germination (42–52% higher sprout biomass, p < 0.05) and bulb pathogenicity tests (41–45% less necrotic) than Fusarium acutatum. Whereas the Galilee yellow Orlando (Riverside) onion cultivar bulbs sampled were colonized by Neocosmospora SC (70%) and two other, less abundant species, F. oxysporum f. sp. cepae and F. acutatum (15% each), the Golan Heights field's Fusarium community showed host specificity. In the Golan Heights field, F. oxysporum f. sp. cepae inhabited the red Ha2 onion cultivar bulbs, whereas F. acutatum colonized the yellow Ha1 cultivar (40% and 50% prevalence along with Neocosmospora SC). A better understanding of the complexity of this disease caused by different Fusarium species and with a divergence in host susceptibility and virulence is critical for developing disease management strategies. Magnetostatic actuators exhibit bistability similarly to the Pull-In phenomena of electrostatic actuators. In this paper a methodology and model for the extraction of the magnetic Pull-In parameters of magnetostatic actuators are derived. The flux-controlled magnetostatic actuator is analyzed based on the energy representation and the magnetomotive force-controlled magnetostatic actuator is analyzed in the thermodynamic potential energy (or co-energy) representation. An algebraic equation, referred to as the magnetic Pull-In equation, for each of the two cases (flux-controlled and magnetomotive force-controlled actuators) is derived. By solving these Pull-In equations either analytically or numerically, the magnetic Pull-In parameters are obtained. Several case studies, covering displacement and torsion magnetic actuators, are presented and analyzed, illustrating the usefulness of the proposed methodology, its relative simplicity as well as the adaptability and practical usage in wide spectrum of magnetic actuators. The dependence of the virulence of the deltacga1 mutants on host and environmental conditions was determined. The results suggest nutrient accessibility and the developmental and senescence status of the host might be important host characters for which data are transmitted by the fungal signaling pathway that contains CGA1.

In this work, an experimental and theoretical study of the effect of various geometrical parameters on the electromechanical response and pull-in parameters of torsion actuators is presented. A lumped two-degrees-of-freedom (L2DOF) pull-in model that takes into account the bending/torsion coupling, previously proposed for cantilever suspended actuators, is tailored for the torsion actuators under study. This model is shown to better capture the measured pull-in parameters than previously proposed lumped single-degree-of-freedom (L1DOF) models. The measurements were conducted on torsion actuators with various shapes, fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers using deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) and flip-chip bonding. Furthermore, a novel rapid solver, for extracting the pull-in parameters of the L2DOF model of the torsion actuators, is proposed. The proposed solver is based on a Newton-Raphson scheme and the recently presented DIPIE algorithm and is shown to be ~10 times faster than the prevalent voltage iterations based solvers. The rapid and more accurate pull-in extraction of the proposed approach renders it as a tool for extensive analysis and design optimization of torsion actuators. This work presents a systematic analysis of electrostatic actuators driven by multiple uncoupled voltage sources. The use of multiple uncoupled voltage sources has the potential of enriching the electromechanical response of electrostatically actuated deformable elements. This in turn may enable novel MEMS devices with improved and even new capabilities. It is therefore important to develop methods for analyzing this class of actuators. Pull-in is an inherent instability phenomenon that emanates from the nonlinear nature of the electromechanical coupling in electrostatic actuators. The character of pull-in in actuators with multiple uncoupled voltage sources is studied, and new insights regarding pull-in are presented. An analytical method for extracting the pull-in hyper-surface by directly solving the voltage-free K-N pull-in equations derived here, is proposed. Pull-in parameters are important properties of electrostatic actuators. Efficient and accurate analysis tools that can capture these parameters for different design geometries, are therefore essential. Current simulation tools approach the Pull-In state by iteratively adjusting the voltage applied across the actuator electrodes. The convergence rate of this scheme gradually deteriorates as the Pull-In state is approached. Moreover, the convergence is inconsistent and requires many mesh and accuracy refinements to assure reliable predictions. As a result, the design procedure of electrostatically actuated MEMS devices can be time-consuming. In this paper a novel displacement iteration Pull-In extraction (DIPIE) scheme is presented. The DIPIE scheme is shown to converge consistently and far more rapidly than the voltage iterations (VI) scheme (> 100 times faster!). The DIPIE scheme requires separate mechanical and electrostatic field solvers. Therefore, it can be easily implemented in existing MOEMS CAD packages. Moreover, using the DIPIE scheme, the Pull-In parameters extraction can be performed in a fully automated mode, and no user input for search bounds is required. An important design issue of electrostatic torsion actuator is the relative locations of the actuating electrodes, where the bias voltage is applied. These geometrical design parameters affect both the Pull-In angle as well as the Pull-In voltage. In this paper, a new approximated analytical solution for the Pull-In equation of an electrostatic torsion actuator with rectangular plates is derived. The analytical expression is shown to be within 0.1% of the one degree of freedom (1DOF) lumped-element model numerical simulations. Moreover, the analytical expressions are compared with the full coupled-domain finite-elements/boundary-elements (FEM/BEM) simulations provided by MEMCAD4.8 Co-solve tool, showing excellent agreement. The approach presented here provides better physical insight, more rapid simulations and an improved design optimization tool for the actuator. This paper presents a generalized model for the pull-in phenomenon in electrostatic actuators with a single input, either charge or voltage. The pull-in phenomenon of a general electrostatic actuator with a single input is represented by an algebraic equation referred to as the pull-in equation. This equation directly yields the pull-in parameters, namely, the pull-in voltage or pull-in charge and the pull-in displacement. The model presented here permits the analysis of a wide range of cases, including nonlinear mechanical effects as well as various nonlinear, nonideal, and parasitic electrical effects. In some of the cases, an analytic solution is derived, which provides physical insight into how the pull-in parameters depend upon the design and properties of the actuator. The pull-in equation can also yield rapid numerical solutions, allowing interactive and optimal design. The model is then utilized to analyze analytically the case of a Duffing spring, previously analyzed numerically by Hung and Senturia, and captures the variations of the pull-in parameters in the continuum between a perfectly linear spring and a cubic spring. Several other case studies are described and analyzed using the pull-in equation, including parallel-plate and tilted-plate (torsion) actuators taking into account the fringing field capacitance, feedback and parasitic capacitance, trapped charges, an external force, and large displacements.
