2. The Ronne Ice Shelf survived the last interglacial.

Abstract

The fate of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) 1 is the largest cause of uncertainty in long-term sea-level projections. In the last interglacial (LIG) around 125,000 years ago, data suggest that sea level was several metres higher than today 2-4 , and required a significant contribution from Antarctic ice loss, with WAIS usually implicated. Antarctica and the Southern Ocean were warmer than today 5-8 , by amounts comparable to those expected by 2100 under moderate to high future warming scenarios. However, direct evidence about the size of WAIS in the LIG is sparse. Here we use sea salt data from an ice core from Skytrain Ice Rise, adjacent to WAIS, to show that, during most of the LIG, the Ronne Ice Shelf was still in place, and close to its current extent. Water isotope data are consistent with a retreat of WAIS 9 , but seem inconsistent with more dramatic model realizations 10 in which both WAIS and the large Antarctic ice shelves were lost. This new constraint calls for a reappraisal of other elements of the LIG sea-level budget. Abstract

Warm Airmass Intrusions (WAIs) from the mid‐latitudes significantly impact the Arctic water budget. Here, we combine water vapor isotope measurements from the MOSAiC expedition, with a Lagrangian‐based process attribution diagnostic to track moisture transformation in the central Arctic Ocean during two WAIs, under contrasting sea‐ice concentrations (SIC). During winter with high SIC, two moisture supplies are identified. The first is Arctic moisture, locally‐sourced over the sea ice, with isotopic composition influenced by kinetic fractionation during ice‐cloud formation and vapor deposition. This moisture is rapidly overprinted by low‐latitude moisture advected poleward during WAI. In summer under low SIC, moisture is supplied through evaporation from land and ocean, with moisture removal via liquid‐cloud and dew formation. The isotopic composition reflects the influence of higher relative humidity at the evaporation sites. Given the projected increase of frequency and duration of WAIs, our study contributes to assessing process changes in the Arctic water cycle. Plain Language Summary: The movement of warm and moist airmasses from lower latitudes has a big effect on the Arctic climate system. We used data from the MOSAiC drift expedition, where we measured the isotopic composition of water vapor. Water isotopes are powerful tracers of where moisture came from and how it changed during the transport. We focused on two specific warm air intrusions, occurring in February and September 2020 respectively, when the amount of sea ice was different. During the winter, the isotopic composition of the airmasses was primarily influenced by in‐Arctic moisture exchanges over sea ice. This local moisture was swiftly replaced by isotopically‐distinct warmer and moister airmasses coming from lower latitudes during the warm intrusion. In summer, when there was less sea ice, we found that water came mainly from ocean evaporation with additional land evaporation during the air intrusion. The isotopic composition of vapor was influenced by how humid the places it came from were. As warm air intrusions are expected to happen more often and last longer in the future, our study helps us understand how they affect the Arctic water cycle. Abstract

Motivated by structural issues in the AdS-CFT correspondence, the theory of generalized free fields is reconsidered. A stress-energy tensor for the generalized free field is constructed as a limit of Wightman fields. Although this limit is singular, it fulfils the requirements of a conserved local density for the Poincar'e generators. An explicit "holographic" formula relating the Klein-Gordon field on AdS to generalized free fields on Minkowski space-time is provided, and contrasted with the "algebraic" notion of holography. A simple relation between the singular stress-energy tensor and the canonical AdS stress-energy tensor is exhibited., Comment: 25 pages

Abstract

In the perturbative AdS-CFT correspondence, the dual field whose source are the prescribed boundary values of a bulk field in the functional integral, and the boundary limit of the quantized bulk field are the same thing. This statement is due to the fact that Witten graphs are boundary limits of the corresponding Feynman graphs for the bulk fields, and hence the dual conformal correlation functions are limits of bulk correlation functions. 7. The Master Ward Identity

Abstract

In the framework of perturbative quantum field theory (QFT) we propose a new, universal (re)normalization condition (called 'master Ward identity') which expresses the symmetries of the underlying classical theory. It implies for example the field equations, energy-momentum, charge- and ghost-number conservation, renormalized equal-time commutation relations and BRST-symmetry. It seems that the master Ward identity can nearly always be satisfied, the only exceptions we know are the usual anomalies. We prove the compatibility of the master Ward identity with the other (re)normalization conditions of causal perturbation theory, and for pure massive theories we show that the 'central solution' of Epstein and Glaser fulfills the master Ward identity, if the UV-scaling behavior of its individual terms is not relatively lowered. Application of the master Ward identity to the BRST-current of non-Abelian gauge theories generates an identity (called 'master BRST-identity') which contains the information which is needed for a local construction of the algebra of observables, i.e. the elimination of the unphysical fields and the construction of physical states in the presence of an adiabatically switched off interaction., Comment: 73 pages, version to appear in Rev. 8. Algebraic Quantum Field Theory, Perturbation Theory, and the Loop Expansion

Abstract

The perturbative treatment of quantum field theory is formulated within the framework of algebraic quantum field theory. We show that the algebra of interacting fields is additive, i.e. fully determined by its subalgebras associated to arbitrary small subregions of Minkowski space. We also give an algebraic formulation of the loop expansion by introducing a projective system ${\cal A}^{(n)}$ of observables ``up to $n$ loops'' where ${\cal A}^{(0)}$ is the Poisson algebra of the classical field theory. Finally we give a local algebraic formulation for two cases of the quantum action principle and compare it with the usual formulation in terms of Green's functions., Comment: 29 pages

10. Deformation stability of BRST-quantization

Abstract

To avoid the problems which are connected with the long distance behavior of perturbative gauge theories we present a local construction of the observables which does not involve the adiabatic limit. First we construct the interacting fields as formal power series by means of causal perturbation theory. The observables are defined by BRST invariance where the BRST-transformation $\tilde s$ acts as a graded derivation on the algebra of interacting fields. Positivity, i.e. the existence of Hilbert space representations of the local algebras of observables is shown with the help of a local Kugo-Ojima operator $Q_{\rm int}$ which implements $\tilde s$ on a local algebra and differs from the corresponding operator $Q$ of the free theory. We prove that the Hilbert space structure present in the free case is stable under perturbations. All assumptions are shown to be satisfied in QED in a finite spatial volume with suitable boundary conditions. 11. A local (perturbative) construction of observables in gauge theories: the example of QED

Abstract

Interacting fields can be constructed as formal power series in the framework of causal perturbation theory. The local field algebra $\tilde {\cal F}({\cal O})$ is obtained without performing the adiabatic limit; the (usually bad) infrared behavior plays no role. To construct the observables in gauge theories we use the Kugo-Ojima formalism; we define the BRST-transformation $\tilde s$ as a graded derivation on the algebra of interacting fields and use the implementation of $\tilde s$ by the Kugo-Ojima operator $Q_{\rm int}$. Since our treatment is local, the operator $Q_{\rm int}$ differs from the corresponding operator $Q$ of the free theory. We prove that the Hilbert space structure present in the free case is stable under perturbations. Abstract

With the Arctic rapidly changing, the needs to observe, understand, and model the changes are essential. To support these needs, an annual cycle of observations of atmospheric properties, processes, and interactions were made while drifting with the sea ice across the central Arctic during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition from October 2019 to September 2020. An international team designed and implemented the comprehensive program to document and characterize all aspects of the Arctic atmospheric system in unprecedented detail, using a variety of approaches, and across multiple scales. These measurements were coordinated with other observational teams to explore crosscutting and coupled interactions with the Arctic Ocean, sea ice, and ecosystem through a variety of physical and biogeochemical processes. This overview outlines the breadth and complexity of the atmospheric research program, which was organized into 4 subgroups: atmospheric state, clouds and precipitation, gases and aerosols, and energy budgets. Atmospheric variability over the annual cycle revealed important influences from a persistent large-scale winter circulation pattern, leading to some storms with pressure and winds that were outside the interquartile range of past conditions suggested by long-term reanalysis. Similarly, the MOSAiC location was warmer and wetter in summer than the reanalysis climatology, in part due to its close proximity to the sea ice edge. The comprehensiveness of the observational program for characterizing and analyzing atmospheric phenomena is demonstrated via a winter case study examining air mass transitions and a summer case study examining vertical atmospheric evolution. Overall, the MOSAiC atmospheric program successfully met its objectives and was the most comprehensive atmospheric measurement program to date conducted over the Arctic sea ice. Abstract

The science guiding the EUREC⁴A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC⁴A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC⁴A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC⁴A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC⁴A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract

Frequency and intensity of warm and moist air-mass intrusions into the Arctic have increased over the past decades and have been related to sea ice melt. During our year-long expedition in the remote central Arctic Ocean, a record-breaking increase in temperature, moisture and downwelling-longwave radiation was observed in mid-April 2020, during an air-mass intrusion carrying air pollutants from northern Eurasia. The two-day intrusion, caused drastic changes in the aerosol size distribution, chemical composition and particle hygroscopicity. Here we show how the intrusion transformed the Arctic from a remote low-particle environment to an area comparable to a central-European urban setting. Additionally, the intrusion resulted in an explosive increase in cloud condensation nuclei, which can have direct effects on Arctic clouds' radiation, their precipitation patterns, and their lifetime. Thus, unless prompt actions to significantly reduce emissions in the source regions are taken, such intrusion events are expected to continue to affect the Arctic climate., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

42. COVID-19 and the labour market: What are the working conditions in critical jobs?

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has focused public attention on occupational groups that ensure the maintenance of critical infrastructure, provision of medical care and supply of essential goods. This paper examines the working conditions in critical jobs based on representative data from the German BAuA Working Time Survey 2019. Our analyses reveal that essential workers are more likely to perform unskilled or semiskilled activities and work in cleaning, transport and logistics, health care occupations as well as IT and natural science services. Regarding the working conditions, essential workers are paid comparatively less and are more physically proximate to others at work than nonessential workers. They more often work atypical hours, such as day and night shifts and on weekends, and have less autonomy in their working time. Additionally, critical jobs are characterised by muscular and skeletal strain due to working positions and carrying heavy loads significantly more often. Abstract

This review article focuses on the functional anatomy of the central autonomic nervous system and the autonomic symptoms and dysfunctions occurring with epileptogenic activity involving areas of the central autonomic nervous system. Clinical experiences have demonstrated a close relation between epileptic and central autonomic activity. Autonomic symptoms are frequent signs of epileptic seizures and may cause dysfunctions in almost every organ system. Cardiorespiratory dysfunction has been described interictually. The increased frequency of sudden unexplained death in epilepsy patients may be related to disturbances in cardiac autonomic control. In contrast, electrical vagal stimulation reduces epileptogenic activity by influencing the central autonomic nervous system.
