The structure-properties relationships of sustainable materials derived from biomass-based monomers are investigated, focusing on hybrid styrene/terpene-based copolymers with blocky microstructures, such as β-myrcene- and β-ocimene-styrene copolymers. The samples show complex glass transition dynamics, as evidenced by the physical aging experienced by the amorphous phase in styrene-rich copolymers. The tendency of styrene- and terpene-rich sequences to give heterogeneous morphologies with correlation strength extending over 10-40 nm is outlined, through small-angle X-ray scattering analysis. A new class of terpene-based hybrid systems, holding promise for applications in surface coating technologies, is identified., (© 2024 The Author(s). The Epstein-Barr viwrus (EBV) is a common herpesvirus that affects more than 90% of people worldwide. Even while EBV infections are frequently asymptomatic, they can cause autoimmune diseases and a number of cancers, especially in those with impaired immune systems. The intricate relationships between EBV and other coinfecting pathogens, including as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human papilloma virus (HPV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and Plasmodium species, are examined in this study. We investigated the fundamental processes of these coinfections, their effects on the course of the disease, and their practical ramifications. The study reviewed how co-infections with EBV might modify immune responses, promote oncogenesis, and make treatment plans more challenging. In this review, we also discussed current therapeutic strategies, such as targeted molecular interventions, EBV vaccines, and adoptive T-cell therapy. The review underscores the need for more research to provide more focused and effective therapies that address the mutually reinforcing effects of numerous infections in disorders linked with EBV. Epilepsy remains a prevalent chronic neurological disease that is featured by aberrant, recurrent and hypersynchronous discharge of neurons and poses a great challenge to healthcare systems. Although several therapeutic interventions are successfully utilized for treating epilepsy, they can merely provide symptom relief but cannot exert disease-modifying effect. Therefore, it is of urgent need to explore other potential mechanism to develop a novel approach to delay the epileptic progression. Since approximately 30 years ago, histone deacetylases (HDACs), the versatile epigenetic regulators responsible for gene transcription via binding histones or non-histone substrates, have grabbed considerable attention in drug discovery. There are also substantial evidences supporting that aberrant expressions and/activities of HDAC isoforms are reported in epilepsy and HDAC inhibitors (HDACi) have been successfully utilized for therapeutic purposes in this condition. However, the specific mechanisms underlying the role of HDACs in epileptic progression have not been fully understood. Herein, we reviewed the basic information of HDACs, summarized the recent findings associated with the roles of diverse HDAC subunits in epilepsy and discussed the potential regulatory mechanisms by which HDACs affected the development of epilepsy. Additionally, we also provided a brief discussion on the potential of HDACs as promising therapeutic targets for epilepsy treatment, serving as a valuable reference for basic study and clinical translation in epilepsy field. This paper explores the response to Holocene ash inundation in different sub‐environments of two fluvio‐lacustrine systems, Las Piedritas and Totoral, focussing on the processes of volcaniclastic remobilisation. Sediment cores and outcrops were used to recognise three deposit types, noting how some differ from lahars, through sedimentological and stratigraphic analysis: (1) thick, laterally discontinuous, pumice‐dominated deposits occur overlying alluvial plain and lower terrace surfaces across both watersheds; (2) chaotic, extremely poorly sorted and matrix‐supported beds composed of both epiclastic and pyroclastic material occur as two conspicuous deposits at Las Piedritas outcrops, in a low‐gradient confined channel setting; and (3) layers with an exclusively pyroclastic composition and no flow sedimentary structures or fragment roundness were found draping each of the two chaotic intervals and intercalating with the background sediment in Las Piedritas prodelta. Thick pumice packages capping the floodplains resulted from the overflow of streams carrying a floating pumice load. Due to its positive buoyancy, the pumice is transported as a slowly moving overlying mantle without mixing with the streamflow. The disorganised pattern and poor sorting of the matrix‐rich polymictic beds are consistent with laminar, gravity‐driven, high‐concentration flows. They constitute secondary lahars, originating upstream from large run‐off processes that reworked a pyroclastic substrate. The lack of reworking features in the vitric‐rich units identified in the lake core retrieved from Las Piedritas prodelta, as well as the continuous and widespread occurrences of those interbedded in upstream outcrops, indicate an airfall origin. No reworked tephra unit is recognised in the prodelta sediment record, although various deposits from the hydrologic remobilisation of airfall tephra are found along the subaerial portion of both watersheds. Apparently, large amounts of flotation‐remobilised tephra were retained on the delta plain, while another considerable fraction would have been carried away from the creek mouth under the influence of dominant regional winds. Crotonylation is a recently discovered protein acyl modification that shares many enzymes with acetylation. However, it possesses a distinct regulatory mechanism and biological function due to its unique crotonyl structure. Since the discovery of crotonylation in 2011, numerous crotonylation sites have been identified in both histones and other proteins. In recent studies, crotonylation was found to play a role in various diseases and biological processes. This paper reviews the initial discovery and regulatory mechanisms of crotonylation, including various writer, reader, and eraser proteins. Finally, we emphasize the relationship of dysregulated protein crotonylation with eight common malignancies, including cervical, prostate, liver, and lung cancer, providing new potential therapeutic targets. Large-scale floods induced by dam failures could cause significant structural damage to buildings and massive loss of life. The coupling effect of large-scale flood spread and building collapse has complex impacts on the entire flow field, affecting flood risk assessment and building vulnerability evaluation. In this paper, a dynamic elevation change model designed to seamlessly interface with a structural vulnerability assessment model to investigate the interaction effect between floods and buildings is presented. The efficiency of the framework was validated by reconstructing the Gleno Dam-Break flood in Italy. Subsequently, a hydrodynamic model of the Jinsha-Yalong River that considers dynamic building collapse was established. The proposed model was compared with two traditional building treatment approaches and one that ignored the buildings. The results show that the interaction between the flood and buildings decreases the low-velocity area (below 1 m/s) by 7.44%–9.56% while increasing the high velocity area (above 4 m/s) by 10.71%–11.96%. Traditional and neglecting building treatments provide preliminary insights into densely built areas, and the latter could be an alternative for simplification because it can represent the worst-case scenario. Building collapse in response to large-scale floods typically occurs in four stages: flood spread, rapid expansion, gradual expansion, and flood recession. This analysis offers novel perspectives on flood prediction and simulations where the floodplain may contain buildings. In degenerative joint disease like osteoarthritis (OA), bioactive compounds like resveratrol, epigallocatechin gallate, curcumin, and other polyphenols often target various signalling pathways, including NFκB, TGFβ, and Wnt/β-catenin by executing epigenetic-modifying activities. Epigenetic modulation can target genes of disease pathophysiology via histone modification, promoter DNA methylation, and non-coding RNA expression, some of which are directly involved in OA but have been less explored. OA patients often seek options that can improve the quality of their life in addition to existing treatment with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Although bioactive and natural compounds exhibit therapeutic potential against OA, several disadvantages loom, like insolubility and poor bioavailability. Nanoformulated bioactive compounds promise a better way to alleviate OA since they also control systemic events, including metabolic, immunological, and inflammatory responses, by modulating host gut microbiota that can regulate OA pathogenesis. Recent data suggest gut dysbiosis in OA. However, limited evidence is available on the role of bioactive compounds as epigenetic and gut modulators in ameliorating OA. Moreover, it is not known whether the effects of polyphenolic bioactive compounds on gut microbial response are mediated by epigenetic modulatory activities in OA. This narrative review highlights the nanotherapeutic strategies utilizing bioactive compounds, reporting their effects on chondrocyte growth, metabolism, and epigenetic modifications in osteoarthritis amelioration. Preclinical studies demonstrating high cure rates with PD1/PD-L1 combinations have led to numerous clinical trials, but emerging results are disappointing. These combined immunotherapies are commonly employed for patients with refractory tumors following prior treatment with cytotoxic agents. Here, we uncovered that the post-chemotherapy tumor presents a unique mechanical microenvironment characterized by an altered extracellular matrix (ECM) elasticity and increased stiffness, which facilitate the development of aggressive tumor phenotypes and confer resistance to checkpoint blocking therapy. As thus, we rationally designed an in situ nanocomposite hydrogel system, LOS&FeOX@Gel, which enabled effective and specific delivery of the therapeutic payloads (losartan [LOS] and oxaliplatin [OX]) into tumor. We demonstrate that sustained release of LOS effectively remodels the tumor mechanical microenvironment (TMM) by reducing ECM deposition and its associated "solid stress", thereby augmenting the efficacy of OX and its immunological effects. Importantly, this hydrogel system greatly sensitized post-chemotherapy tumor to checkpoint blocking therapy, showing synergistic therapeutic effects against cancer metastasis. Our study provides mechanistic insights and preclinical rationale for modulating TMM as a potential neoadjuvant regimen for tumor to optimize the benefits of chemo-immunotherapy, which lays the groundwork for leveraging "mechanical-immunoengineering" strategies to combat refractory tumors. Epidemiological delays are key quantities that inform public health policy and clinical practice. They are used as inputs for mathematical and statistical models, which in turn can guide control strategies. In recent work, we found that censoring, right truncation, and dynamical bias were rarely addressed correctly when estimating delays and that these biases were large enough to have knock-on impacts across a large number of use cases. Here, we formulate a checklist of best practices for estimating and reporting epidemiological delays. We also provide a flowchart to guide practitioners based on their data. Our examples are focused on the incubation period and serial interval due to their importance in outbreak response and modeling, but our recommendations are applicable to other delays. The recommendations, which are based on the literature and our experience estimating epidemiological delay distributions during outbreak responses, can help improve the robustness and utility of reported estimates and provide guidance for the evaluation of estimates for downstream use in transmission models or other analyses. Microplastics (MPLs) and nanoplastics (NPLs) are smaller particles derived from larger plastic material, polymerization, or refuse. In context to environmental health, they are separated into the industrially-created "primary" category or the degradation derivative "secondary" category where the particles exhibit different physiochemical characteristics that attenuate their toxicities. However, some particle types are more well documented in terms of their fate in the environment and potential toxicological effects (secondary) versus their industrial fabrication and chemical characterization (primary). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR/µ-FTIR), Raman/µ-Raman, Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (H-NMR), Curie Point-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (CP-gc-MS), Induced Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA), Field Flow Fractionation-Multiple Angle Light Scattering (FFF-MALS), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetry (TGA), Differential Mobility Particle [Sizing] (DMPS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Scanning Transmission X-ray Microspectroscopy (STXM) are reviewed as part of a suite of characterization methods for physiochemical ascertainment and distinguishment. In addition, Optical-Photothermal Infrared Microspectroscopy (O-PTIR), Z-Stack Confocal Microscopy, Mueller Matrix Polarimetry, and Digital Holography (DH) are touched upon as a suite of cutting-edge modes of characterization. Organizations, like the water treatment or waste management industry, and those in groups that bring awareness to this issue, which are in direct contact with the hydrosphere, can utilize these techniques in order to sense and remediate this plastic polymer pollution. The primary goal of this review paper is to highlight the extent of plastic pollution in the environment as well as introduce its effect on the biodiversity of the planet while underscoring current characterization techniques in this field of research. The secondary goal involves illustrating current and theoretical avenues in which future research needs to address and optimize MPL/NPL remediation, utilizing nanotechnology, before this sleeping giant of a problem awakens. There is a lack of dietary fiber and some essential amino acids in instant noodles. Enriching this popular food with protein‐ and fiber‐rich sources is important to improve the nutritional quality of noodles. The current study is aimed at enriching instant noodles by substituting wheat flour with lentil flour (7%–35%: L7%, L21%, and L35%), soy‐protein isolate (1%–5%: S1%, S3% and S5%), egg‐white protein (1–5: E1%, E3%, and E5%) and Spirulina platensis (1%–5%: S.p1%, S.p3% and S.p5%). The physicochemical, microbial, textural, and sensorial properties of noodle samples were investigated. The spatial relationship between parameters was also evaluated based on principal component analysis (PCA) to select the suitable noodle formulation. The highest protein (17.06%) and lowest carbohydrate contents (76.44%) were for L35%. The lowest (1.69%) and highest fat contents (2.04%) were for S5% and S.p5%m, respectively (p > 0.05). Energy values varied from 394.83 (E5%) to 396.37 kcal/100 g (S.p5%). There was no significant difference between the microbial quality of noodle samples (p > 0.05). The hardness of noodles with 1%–5% soy protein, 21% or more lentil flour, and 3% or more egg‐white/Spirulina was higher than the control/unenriched group (p < 0.05). The color difference of E1 and E3% with the control sample was not obvious (ΔE∗ < 3). Although all the ingredients improved the nutritional value of the noodles, the overall acceptance of samples with 3% or more of Spirulina was lower than the acceptable limit (a score of 3). According to PCA, when the nutritional value and sensory acceptance are important, the L35% may be a better choice. E1%, E3%, S1%, S5%, and L7% noodles received almost the same sensory score as the control sample, while they had more nutritional values. A combination of animal, plant, and microalgae protein sources may provide a noodle with high nutritional value, containing a wide range of essential amino acids and bioactive compounds. Background: Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is a significant global cause of viral hepatitis. At present, the anti-HAV vaccine in Italy is proposed exclusively for specific high-risk groups, and a universal vaccination program is not implemented. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the level of immunity against HAV in patients of both sexes across age groups ranging from 0 to 95 years admitted to the San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona Hospital in Salerno, Italy, over a 9-year period (2015–2023). Methods: The total HAV seroprevalence by chemiluminescence Vitros system immunodiagnostics (ortho-diagnostics) was obtained by database analysis, stratifying patients for gender and age group in both the pre-pandemic (2015–2019) and pandemic (2020–2023) periods. Results: Out of 28,104 samples collected in 2015–2023, 20,613 resulted positive by total HAV immune screening, with a significant reduction in the annualized proportion of events during the pandemic period compared to the pre-pandemic period. HAV was more abundant in males than females in both periods (exceeding the 70%), with a statistically significant decrease in HAV in females in 2015–2019. The 61–70-year-old age group is more susceptible for both genders, with a strong deviation from the 41–50-year-old age group compared to the 51–60-year-old group. The pandemic period affected the number of analyzed samples in 2020. Conclusions: The study revealed high HAV seroprevalence, especially in males and individuals aged 61–70 years. There was a notable decrease in seroprevalence during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic years. These results emphasize the need for ongoing monitoring and suggest that a universal vaccination program could address regional immunity gaps and lower disease incidence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and objectives: The demand for gluten-free products has increased due to the increasing number of people with celiac disease and the tendency of consumers to remove allergenic proteins from their diet. Therefore, the aim of this research is to formulate, produce, and evaluate the quality characteristics of enzyme-modified gluten-free Fermi pasta based on rice flour and pseudocereals. Materials and methods: A sample of gluten-free pasta was prepared from a mixture of 25 percent rice flour and 75 percent (w/w) semicereal flour (equal proportions of chia, teff, quinoa, amaranth, and buckwheat) with different weights of the transglutaminase enzyme (0, 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 ppm). The commercial control sample was made from wheat flour. The color, texture, functional, and sensory characteristics of the enzyme-modified gluten-free Fermi pasta were investigated. Results: The results showed that with the increase of the concentration of the enzyme, the color brightness index (L*) in the cooked sample increased and the indices b* and a* remained unchanged (p<0.05), resulting in an increase in the whiteness of the product and the final yellowness decreasing. Furthermore, the transglutaminase enzyme had a positive effect on increasing the hardness of the texture and baking number and decreasing the glaze number of the final product. Pasta with 2000 ppm of transglutaminase enzyme was selected as a sample for Fermi pasta without modified gluten. Conclusion: The results show that the use of the transglutaminase enzyme can significantly improve the quality characteristics of glutenfree pasta. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Obesity is advancing at an accelerated pace, and yet its treatment is still an emerging field. Although studies have demonstrated the role of the microbiota in the pathogenesis of obesity, this is the first study to show the effects of intermittent fasting (IF), combined or not with exercise, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on the gut microbiota composition in women with obesity. Our hypothesis is that IF combined with HIIT can promote the remodeling of the composition and function of the gut microbiota. Thirty-six women with obesity, aged between 18 and 40 yr, participated in the study. They were randomly divided into three groups: 1) IF associated with HIIT group [IF + exercise group (EX), n = 15]; 2) HIIT group (EX, n = 11); and 3) IF group (IF, n = 10). Interventions took place over 8 wk, and all assessments were performed preintervention and postintervention. The HIIT circuit was performed 3 times/wk, for 25 min/session. The IF protocol was a 5:2 (2 times/wk). Multiplex analysis of inflammatory cytokines, sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, and gas chromatography to measure fecal concentrations of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were performed. This study was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05237154). Exercise increased fecal acetate concentrations (P = 0.04), but no changes were observed in the composition and functional profile of the microbiota. The interventions did not change the composition of the microbiota, but exercise may play a modulatory role in the production of acetate. This investigation provides clinical insights into the use of IF and HIIT for women with obesity. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: This is the first investigation about alternate-day fasting combined with HITT on the gut microbiota of obese women. The study contributes to the advancement of human science involving IF and HIIT, popular strategies for managing obesity. Previous evidence has explored IF in modulating the microbiota in animal models or specific populations and clinical conditions. Commonly used research models analysing technological adoption, such as the Technology Adoption Model, Theory of Planned Behaviour, and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, mostly emphasise technology-related variables. In the context of mobile stock investment application adoption, this study extends the existing technological adoption models by adding digital financial service-related variables. The purpose of this study is to investigate the main determinants of mobile stock investment application adoption in emerging countries, specifically in Indonesia. The study deployed a quantitative type of research with an online survey questionnaire by recruiting 256 respondents of stock investors who have used mobile applications for a minimum of one year. Data was analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) with advanced analysis tests. The results confirm the significant influence of performance expectancy, finfluencers, perceived financial risks, perceived financial benefits, perceived technology security, financial literacy, and e-reputation on adoption behaviour. The results also find a significant influence of adoption behaviour on the intention to recommend. Meanwhile, effort expectancy and facilitating conditions were insignificant toward adoption behaviour. These findings signify that the comprehensive research model could contribute to enriching studies on adoption of the mobile technology by extending TPB and UTAUT with specific variables related to stock investment and its impact on the intention to recommend the applications. Objective: The aim of our study was to investigate whether a 1-month-long milk-free diet results in a reduction in faecal calprotectin (FC) and faecal-zonulin-related proteins (FZRP) in children with milk-protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (MPIAP). Materials and methods: This is a single-centre, prospective, observational cohort study involving 86 infants with MPIAP, aged 1–3 months, and 30 healthy controls of the same age. The FC and FZRP were marked using the ELISA method (IDK® Calprotectin or Zonulin ELISA Kit, Immunodiagnostik AG, Bensheim, Germany). The diagnosis of MPIAP was confirmed with an open milk challenge test. Results: FFC and FZRP proved useful in evaluating MPIAP treatment with a milk-free diet, and the resolution of allergic symptoms and a significant (p = 0.0000) decrease in the concentrations of both biomarkers were observed after 4 weeks on the diet. The FC and FZRP concentrations were still higher than in the control group. A high variability of FC concentrations was found in all the study groups. An important limitation is the phenomenon of FZRP not being produced in all individuals, affecting one in five infants. Conclusions: FC and FZRP can be used to monitor the resolution of colitis in infants with MPIAP treated with a milk-free diet, indicating a slower resolution of allergic inflammation than of allergic symptoms. The diagnosis of MPIAP on the basis of FC concentrations is subject to considerable error, due to the high individual variability of this indicator.
